Bill Clinton says he understands Palin's appeal

advertisement

Bill Clinton said Monday he understands why Sarah Palin is popular in the heartland: because people relate to her.

"I come from Arkansas, I get why she's hot out there," Clinton said. "Why she's doing well."

Speaking to reporters before his Clinton Global Initiative meeting, the former president described Palin's appeal by adding, "People look at her, and they say, 'All those kids. Something that happens in everybody's family. I'm glad she loves her daughter and she's not ashamed of her. Glad that girl's going around with her boyfriend. Glad they're going to get married.'"

Clinton said voters would think, "I like that little Down syndrome kid. One of them lives down the street. They're wonderful children. They're wonderful people. And I like the idea that this guy does those long-distance races. Stayed in the race for 500 miles with a broken arm. My kind of guy."

Palin, the governor of Alaska, became an overnight star when Republican presidential candidate John McCain tapped her for his running mate. Her family, including her Down syndrome baby, Trig, her pregnant 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, and her husband, Todd, four-time winner of the 2,000-mile Iron Dog snowmobile race, have garnered intense media interest.

"I get this," Clinton said. "My view is ... why say, ever, anything bad about a person? Why don't we like them and celebrate them and be happy for her elevation to the ticket? And just say that she was a good choice for him and we disagree with them?"

The global initiative, a project of Clinton's foundation, will hold its four-day annual meeting in Manhattan starting Tuesday.

After that, Clinton said he will be busy campaigning for the Democratic ticket of Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Bill Clinton seems to be the only one on the Dems. side that is capable of showing any sense as well as a bit of reasoning. I did not vote for him, but I do like him, he probably would be a great choice for a bunch of good-ole' boys to sit around in a bar, have a few beers, and tell jokes. He's not all that bad...good for Slick Willy.

Clinton has a sense of goodness for hard working middle class people. These are the same people who admired and supported his wife. I'm glad he's showing some respect for Palin and her family. But I'm sure he'll be thrown under the bus by the extreme liberals for not bashing Palin.

A very non-partisan statement. And instead of embracing that, you make a very partisan comment that Bill is the only Democrat capable of showing any sense as well as a bit of reasoning. FAIL.

Both the Democrats and the Republicans have their rabid element that can't help themselves when it comes to tossing out divisive and inflammatory comments, lies and half truths, that have nothing to do with the real issues. The only real difference is where within each party these outrageous comments come from, and which of the candidates continues to put his "I approve this message" stamp of approval on them.

Clinton sure had a change of heart since his wife ran against Obama. I remember his saying a lot of hurtful things about and against Obama.

I get what he is saying between the lines. There is no need for name calling, lies, and attempts to humiliate the opponents. You either support them or you don't. If we kept it to the issues he instead of the superficial things, the choice would be certain-Obama/Biden!

there is no such thing as"a certain choice of obamma/biden" no eperience, no concrete plan as to how to accomplish his grandiose promises , no idea of how government works, nothing at all.

Disabled Vietnam vet, I respect your service to our country and I am sorry for any injuries incurred during this war. I do disagree with your assessment, however. If all of that was true, he wouldn't be where he is today. Unfortunately, the republicans who have been around long enough to have an "idea of how the government works" have not proved to me that this idea hasn't grown into anything but disaster for this country. However, we can agree to disagree. I already know what we have, and what we will have if McCain is President, as evidenced by his voting record of voting with Bush 90% of the time, and I say "Thanks but no thanks" to more of the same.

Sorry Bill - Palin is WAY too hot for you. Why don't you crawl back to Hillary. Or Monica. Or Paula. Or Jennifer. Should I go on? He was so fun to have in office - I miss that rosy cheeked guy.

For those who think that Sarah doesn't have strong executive experience - where did Billy Boy make his leap to President - wasn't it as Governor of Arkansas? Arkansas makes Alaska look rich, sophisticated, and well run. So you voted for Billy in '92 and '96 but whine that Sarah is inexperienced compared to Obama? Just because she didn't organize any community bake sales like BHO - sorry - I mean BO since nobody is allowed to say Hussein.

All of the Libs are so afraid of Sarah - it makes me smile every time I read all those nasty blogs about Sarah. She's hot and she relates to the normal parts of the USA - not the San Fran crowd, not the Hollywoods, not the Mass libs - the other 99% who are going to vote her into office. Your anger tells your fear.

Not that you don't make a decent point, but Bill had been governor for 12 years, not two. It's pretty hard to compare the two.

I really enjoyed that you put her strongest foot forward with the "she's hot" ... It shows that pubescent male attitude is still what drives most men.

Also, are you really suggesting that the Palin-McCain ticket is going to receive 99% of the vote? Good luck with that prediction man.

I am also a dedicated democrat that is lukewarm about Obama. I don't think he is the best person for the job, but he is better than McCain. So, I see where Bill is comong from. I am going to vote for Obama, I campaign for Obama but it is hard to be his greatest cheerleader. I am happy Bill is able to do it at all. If I were in his or Hillary's shoes, I probably wouldn't be able to. They certainly had a lot more invested in this election that I.

Exactly. Maybe the Clintons can see better than most what lies ahead with BO. Yes there has to be some bitterness. Why not? Certain powers within the Dem party did all they could to ensure BO as candidate. HRC was the recepient of the Obama campaigns sly innuendos and dirty politicing. (Reminds one of Barrack's earlier Chicago campaigns)
Mainly I think the Clintons forsee a backlash against the Dem party for 2012. Combine BO with Pelosi and you have a very left leaning administration. Like it or not the country is more conservative than that. The only thing saving the Dems is the Bush albotross. Take that away and BOs support would shrink to the far left and the MTV crowd. That being said I still regretably predict an Obama win. People might as well get used to the idea of hard earned dollars going to fund other peoples proclivities.
