Palin: US could face another Great Depression

advertisement

Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin said Wednesday that the United States could be headed for another Great Depression if Congress doesn't act on the financial crisis.

Palin made the comment in an interview with "CBS Evening News" anchor Katie Couric while visiting New York to meet foreign leaders for the first time in her political career. As Palin sought to establish her credentials in world affairs, first lady Laura Bush said Palin lacked sufficient foreign policy experience but was "a quick study."

Recent surveys have shown that Palin's popularity, while still strong, has begun to fade.

Earlier this month, an Associated Press-Yahoo News poll showed more people viewing Palin favorably than unfavorably, 47 percent to 28 percent. But an ABC News-Washington Post poll released Wednesday showed that in a two-week period, the number seeing Palin positively dropped 6 percentage points while 10 points more see her unfavorably. On Monday, a CNN-Opinion Research Corp. poll said her favorable rating dropped 4 points and her unfavorable rating rose 8 points over two weeks.

Palin has been in New York this week for a series of meetings with foreign leaders, part of an effort by Republican John McCain's presidential campaign to counter criticism that the former small-town mayor lacks the experience to be vice president, let alone president in an emergency.

The CBS interview was just her third major interview in nearly four weeks on the GOP presidential ticket. Asked whether there's a risk of another Great Depression if Congress doesn't approve a $700 billion bailout package, Palin said, "Unfortunately, that is the road that America may find itself on."

Palin said the answer to the financial crisis doesn't necessarily have to be the bailout plan the Bush administration has proposed, but that it should be some form of bipartisan action to reform Wall Street.

"I'm ill about the position that America is in and that we have to look at a $700 billion bailout. At the same time we know that inaction is not an option and as Sen. McCain has said unless this nearly trillion-dollar bailout is what it may end up to be, unless there are amendments in Paulson's proposal, really I don't believe that Americans are going to support this and we will not support this," Palin said in the interview.

Couric pressed Palin on examples of how McCain, a 26-year congressional veteran, had led the charge for more oversight.

The Alaska governor cited McCain's warnings about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac two years ago as well as his image as a maverick. Questioned again for examples, and reminded that McCain had been chairman of the Commerce Committee, Palin said, "I'll try to find you some and I'll bring them to you."

McCain has insisted Palin is ready to take over as president, but he made no mention of including her in the meetings he wants in Washington to deal with the financial crisis.

Laura Bush told CNN that she thought Palin had "a lot of really good common sense" and commended her executive experience. Asked if she thought Palin had sufficient foreign policy experience, the first lady said: "Of course she doesn't have that. You know, that's not been her role, but I think she is a very quick study, and fortunately John McCain does have that sort of experience."

Palin covered a range of issues Wednesday in her conversations with foreign leaders, according to her foreign policy adviser, Stephen Biegun.

She and Iraqi President Jalal Talabani discussed a new election law approved by parliament this week that paves the way for the first provincial elections in four years. Biegun also said Talabani was greatly interested in the Alaska Permanent Fund, which gives residents a share of the state's oil wealth.

"It's something the Iraqis were well-familiar with, and it's apparently something that they're looking at as a model to pursue the development of their oil fields," Biegun said.

On her way to that meeting, Palin got a glimpse of ground zero for the Sept. 11 terror attacks in New York as her motorcade made its way downtown. She did not respond to a reporter's question about what she thought when she passed by the 16-acre site.

Her motorcade was stuck in traffic for a few minutes along its western border, where passers-by can see cranes jutting into the sky from the base of the deep pit that once was the World Trade Center basement. Crews are building a memorial to the attacks and a 1,776-foot-tall building to replace the destroyed twin towers.

Palin met with Talabani and then with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari before an evening session with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Earlier Wednesday, Palin and McCain met jointly with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili and Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko.

The McCain campaign set up the sessions with the leaders, who were among those in town for the U.N. General Assembly.

Meanwhile, Palin's infant son and two youngest daughters headed home to Alaska after a day of quintessential New York sightseeing with their father, Todd Palin. He took them to the tip of Manhattan to see the Statue of Liberty. The family also visited ground zero, and ate hot dogs and soft pretzels in Central Park.

They stopped at the FAO Schwarz toy store, where daughter Piper tried on princess dresses, the campaign said.

At the start of her meeting with Talabani, the governor was overheard saying: "There's plenty to do here, isn't there? Plenty to see."

I thought Republicans believe big government can't solve problems. When did Palin/McCain change their mind?

Sarah Palin is a nice person I'm sure and very probably a great mom and wife and she probably was a fair mayor of Wasilla and even a decent governor of Alaska. But we are talking about the NFL/NBA and the NHL of politics and I cant see her getting off the bench. There are more people in Washington DC than there are in Alaska and no one wants the DC mayor for President.

NO DUH SARAH. Where have you been for the last 2 days? Its getting annoying seeing reporters try to stretch what little they got from Palin into a whole story. Im shocked she can even speak on the crisis. By the way, Is McCain trying to recruit Obama to back good ol Bush on the bailout? Seems like it. If Obama follows McCain to Washington to "fix" this MESS along with Bush and Paulson, Next week when it fails McCain will be saying "My friends, Obama was DUMB enough to follow me on that stupid plan Paulson had. He isnt smart enough to be President." LOL This is all crazy!!! Really

I know that everyone has a tisk tisk out look on this topic but lets try to keep an open mind. if there is so much debt and money needed, if these politicians are so worried about us going in to the great depression again and needing an economic boost. I think legalization of cannabis in the united states would not only benefit so greatly from the tax they would put on it but it would also open up so many jobs for so many people, not to mention how it would boost the entrepreneurs which would challenge all the monopoly's on gas alcohol an even tobacco. I GUARANTEE NO ONE EVEN CONSIDERS THIS!

The U.S spends billions on the drug war over 19 billion annually since 2003 --and it's exacerbated the problem more than helped. This is money that could best be used elsewhere. I don't expect anyone will care about that though because people/corporations are making huge bucks as a result of it. Sounds familiar huh?

Considering she doesn't really even know what freddie and fannie are I don't think I'm going to put too much stock in her opinion of this incredibly complex financial crisis. Of course with all due respect to Ms. Palin, I don't really consider her much of an expert on anything. Well, she could give me advice on hockey or moose hunting I suppose, but beyond that I probably wouldn't find a lot of value in much that she has to say.

I think the GOP is prerecorded. You know, the entire Republican base, no interaction, just prerecorded ideas and decisions. Difference between the depression and now is that during the depression we weren't in debt and we had energy and we manufactured our own needs. None of those factors are true today. Palin has alot of energy (oil, natural gas) in Alaska with alot of restrictions on producing. If we're headed toward a downward spiral, what do you think will help Americans? Access to our own resources, especially what's in Alaska.

Watched an interview with a Shell oil executive who met with Palin several times since her governorship and he had nothing but great things to say about her. She's the real deal, she's very intelligent, she's in charge, and she called the shots to the oil executives as to what was in Alaska and its people's best interest.

Sure she's short on foreign policy, but look as the mess the the more "experienced" politicians have made? Heck, as much as I like Biden, He can't figure out when the depression was and who was President at the time. If experience gets us this, give me someone with alot of common sense and backbone!!!

This statement by Palin sounds more like a combination of scare tactics and lack of knowledge to me. There are several major differences between this crisis and the Great Depression.
First of all, the Fed actually helped cause the Great Depression by raising interest rates. We all know that the opposite has been done recently in order to prevent the stifling of investing.
Second, tariffs were increased during the Great Depression which made matters worse. Currently tariffs are much lower.
Third, large tax increases were passed during the Depression era. The top marginal income tax rate was at 79 percent. The current top marginal income tax rate is 35%.
Finally, during the Great Depression there were no bailouts, instead there were politicized loans, where politicians and bureaucrats picked the winners and losers.

I find it rather interesting that the "McCain campaign" only appear to have set up meetings with leaders of countries that are of interest to Cheney and his secret energy board in their effort to control the Central Asian area's oil. It's also interesting the McCain doesn't appear to be in control of "the McCain Campaign". He only appears to be along on the ride to Palin's Presidency.

One of the most important roles of the President or Vice-President is to inspire confidence, to promote optimism, not to foretell gloom and doom. Obviously, Palin does not understand this. Add that to the list of other things she simply does not understand - pretty much everything. What an outstanding choice for the person a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

Say what? The Constitution empowers the president to govern as head of the executive branch. There is no evidence therein that the founding fathers intended the president (or any federal official) to inspire or to promote optimism.

One of the most important roles of the President or Vice-President is to inspire confidence, to promote optimism, not to predict gloom and doom. Our greatest leaders have known this. Even our worst leaders recognized this role although they probably exhibited confidence to disguise their incompetence. Palin seems to be completely unaware of the importance of being a confidence-builder. Add this to her resume along with all of her other deficiencies.

This wasn't a good statement by Palin... while she appears to be blaming the Democrats in Congress, in reality all the public heard was "Great Depression" and when the public gets scared about the economy they vote Democrat. This might cost them a few more points.

I am inclined to agree that this is the worst time to "cram" for that big test on Friday. It's like taking an economics mid-term and staying up the night before to study for it using no-doz and redbull. I do appreciate she is making an effort to grasp the financial crisis "fundamentals" she may inherit, but doing it in this manner isn't exactly constructive. One thing that gets me is that Obama has no more experience than Palin yet he is actually running for the presidency and not VP, but we would never hear about that would we. At least Palin has some experience trying to balance a budget .. etc (and not her checkbook!). HUGE difference.

When I see Palin I see myself. I understand how government works, I have a basic grasp of our countries economics, Wall Street is just a place they trade stocks right ? (sarcasm) and understand our history. That by no means makes me anywhere near able to fill the position she is in right now.
If she learns fast and pays attention she may just pull it out of her butt.
I guess Obama just has a better writing staff ?

She is cramming for the job of VP, not just the debate. That's what's so alarming!

Obama has no more experience than Palin

Well, if you look strictly at management experience, one could say that Palin has more than McCain! However, it's also important to look at what she's managed. For less than two years she has managed the executive branch of a sparsely populated state -- not even 700,000 people! Before that she was the mayor of a very small town -- less than 5,000 at the time she was in office. I know she has dealt with rather big budgets and some complex issues as a manager, but nothing that comes close to the complexities of the US government. In that sense you could say none of the four candidates have had jobs of that level of complexity.

When it comes to Palin, however, there are signs that perhaps she has not done such a good job. Her town was reportedly essentially debt free when she was first elected whereas she left it with over 20 million in debt. And one only has to look at the controversies in Alaska regarding her governorship (e.g. Troopergate, cutting funds for special needs children, etc.) to be able to say that the jury is still out on how good a manager she has been.

In terms of Obam'a management experience, well he managed community organizations and his State and US Senate offices. However, this is nothing compared to his expert management of his campaign (which has been equivalent to managing a multi-million start-up with hundreds of employees) for the past 21 months -- slightly longer than the amount of time Palin has been Governor.

But we need so much more than someone with managerial experience -- we need someone with a good mix of educational, managerial, governmental and life experiences. Obama has a law degree from Harvard and taught Constitutional Law for 12 years at the University of Chicago. The man is a constitutional scholar!! To have a President who understands the foundations of our government from this perspective is sorely needed. In addition, his undergraduate degree is in Political Science with a specialty in International Relations.

More than that, though, he worked in state government for 8 years (elected 3 times, so he must have done something right) and has experience in Washington -- but not so much to make him what some might call a Washington insider.

Among the Senate Committees he serves on is the Foreign Relations Committee (which Joe Biden chairs). He is also Chair of the Senate's subcommittee on European Affairs. He has made official trips to Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.

Obama is someone I think will make an excellent President -- someone who has scholarly and first hand knowledge of how government works; someone with experience in, and knowledge of management, the world, the country, state government and federal government.

So, I'm voting for Obama-Biden so that the USA doesn't sink any further than it's sunk after these last 8 years.

I think Vice President Sarah-Palin-Clinton should pose for Penthouse- with a gun and map of Georgia.
Its soo cool how put together and decisive she is- I trust people like her. Its okay if you've never been to Russia, can speak or write "their" language- if you decide its time to run their businesses and invade from advise from someone else than "yes", by all means invade; before ever visiting their country..than its cool, too. Sarah, should mothers who are predisposed to gay genes abort the child to avoid being social stigmatised? Sarah Palin/Clinton I know the press is too problematic for your already determined made-up mind, but, do you think Christianity and Science conflict? If so- being your a religious individual(you are an individual, correct, Sarah-Palin/Clinton?) do you think religion is a deciding factor in "Our" daily lives?..what to do about science then,- I mean Sarah the space programs, computer industries, telecommunications companies, automotive industries...all Sarah Palin/Clinton come from Science- fresh fruits and vegetables grown organically do not, correct.(?)

Yeah, the media falls all over itself for photo ops with Palin, who isn't allowed to talk very much (I'm not counting reading canned speeches as "talking") while Biden is out talking with the American people. Here are a couple of recent threads for you:

                  Follow the money trail.

The federal government wants to take 3000 from each citizen (ave) and give it to corporations. This is a scheme to transfer wealth from the poor to the rich.

Depending on how they do it, we are buying the companies, stopping the execs from getting a golden parachute, and then we may actually sell the shares for a profit in a few years. We stand to make some real money here if we do the purchase right.
