Letterman unloads on McCain for not showing up

"Late Show" host David Letterman treated John McCain's decision to cancel an appearance on his talk show more like a stupid human trick than the act of a statesman.

The Republican presidential candidate said he was halting his campaign activities Wednesday, citing the need to deal with the nation's financial crisis, and called Letterman to drop out of the show's late-night lineup. On the air Wednesday night, Letterman assailed McCain's rationale and, with prickly humor, questioned whether the nominee — now trailing in some polls — was in trouble.

"This doesn't smell right," Letterman said. "This is not the way a tested hero behaves. Somebody's putting something in his Metamucil."

McCain spokeswoman Nicole Wallace said Thursday that the campaign "felt this wasn't a night for comedy."

"We deeply regret offending Mr. Letterman, but our candidate's priority at this moment is to focus on this crisis," Wallace said on NBC's "Today" show.

Letterman called McCain "a true American hero" but told his viewers: "This is not the John McCain I know, by God. It makes me believe something is going haywire with the campaign."

Instead of suspending a campaign, Letterman said, a presidential candidate should go to Washington to deal with a crisis and let his running mate shoulder the burdens of politicking.

"That's what you do. You don't quit. ... Or is that really a good thing to do?" Letterman said, a reference to McCain's running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. "What's the problem? Where is she? Why isn't she doing that?" he asked.

Letterman later asked: "Are we suspending it because there's an economic crisis or because the poll numbers are sliding?"

Making matters worse for McCain, his replacement was MSNBC's "Countdown" host Keith Olbermann, a constant critic of the Arizona senator.

McCain told the CBS show that he was immediately flying back to Washington, Letterman told his audience. Then Letterman showed a TV feed of McCain being made-up for an appearance on news anchor Katie Couric's "CBS Evening News."

"Doesn't seem to be racing to the airport, does he?" Letterman said. "This just gets uglier and uglier."

As McCain spoke to Couric, Letterman shouted at the feed: "Hey, John, I've got a question. Do you need a ride to the airport?"

Letterman later said: "We're told now that the senator has concluded his interview with Katie Couric and he's now on Rachael Ray's show making veal piccata. ... What are you going to do?"

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

McCain's campaign is in such shambles that he doesn't know which direction to go in so he plays it by ear. He does whatever seems right at the moment.

More of the same from John McShame

John McLame says, "I don't know much about the economy, I still need to be educated"

"It would be acceptable if we had to stay in Iraq for another 100 years."

We need to "bomb, bomb, and bomb Iran"

"I have voted with Bush 90% of the time because he has been right 90% of the time"

    Sarah Failin says,

"I have foreign policy experience because you can see Russia from Alaska and I went to Mexico on vacation once."

"I welcome any investigation into my past because I have nothing to hide, oh never mind I will not meet with any investigators for any reason ever."

She believes the Bush Doctrine is a "World View" hahaha

She says she said "No Thanks" for the Bridge to nowhere when she was actually the one who got it approved

She says we may have to go to war WITH RUSSIA

She decreased her own responsibilities when she was the mayor of a town small enough to be run by a fifth grader

You may be able to hide Sarah Palin from the people and the press because she it too incompetent to answer any questions BUT YOU…You CAN"T HIDE FOREVER sooner or later the debates will happen and you will have NO WHERE TO HIDE!!!!

If we can see this, why can't others see it? I mean it's not like any of this is made up. Are McCain's supporters so desperate to hold on to something so intangible that they're willing to sacrifice everything that holds true to this country?

I would of rather had both candidates in Washington, just because the fact is one of those two are going to be in the WH next january. Not on talk shows, not giving press conferences. One of those two is going to have to deal with the problem when elected and I'd rather have them get firsthand information on solving it. If they don't go, then it's going to be up to others to inform them of decisions made and not the full range of options. Plus both of them are supposed to be senators representing their states. And if their out politicking, then they are not doing their job.

Bush was wrong for calling them to D.C. Too many cooks spoil the stew. Neither was needed. Besidens, they didn't need to be there in body to contribute. Technology is at the point where you can be in Finland and participate in a meeting in Oregon and everyone can hear and see everyone else. Really!

lol, I have to this every so often myself. It's a lot easier and cheaper then flying with the benefit of no jet lag. My company's been using it more and more for meetings, though the locations of some of our factories and distributors make some very interesting meeting times. As more of the plants and instate locations get upgraded, instate traveling is supposed to curtailed also. If they don't have the upgrades yet, then they have to travel to the nearest instate location that does.

Bush was wrong for calling them to D.C.

He may of been, but their jobs as senators come before campaigning (at least to me.) Plus the fact that one of them will have to deal with this in January makes it imperative that they know fully the details of this bailout and the potential pitfalls. Having an adviser(s) studying it is fine, but the future president will be personally accountable for it's success or failure. As for the "too many cooks spoil the stew (#3.1)", not enough may mean it will never get done. These candidates are their party's nomination for president that the voters are going to decide on in November. If the party's are serious about getting the problem's fixed, then having their candidate's there in the discussion will have more of an effect then just talking about it. They don't have to be the primary participants, but being there and participating means more to me then just flying around and giving the media and public soundbites.

I don't understand why any sensible person would ever go on the Letterman show in the first place. As for opting out, everyone knows that Letterman throws a hissy fit when he doesn't get his way. I got caught up in a lot of that silly sputtering Letterman was doing because I wondered what it was all about. Now that I hear the Barney Frank character jabbering on and on, I think someone should have called Barney Frank and sent him over to entertain Letterman. Now, there is a good pair.

And the Frank guy is supposed to be heading up deal making in the House. What a hoot!

Republicans Oppose Bailout For Democratic Leaders Who Voted Against Republican Regulations in 2005
The very fact that Democrats are scrambling to get this bill though to Socialize the Debt and for the Privatiation of the Profit for themselves, PROVES again, Democrats voted against the Regulation Bill for Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac at the bequest of Greenspan's Warning 2005.

Senator John McCain was one of the three cosponsors of S.190, the bill that would have averted this mess.

But that is in the past and can't be changed. It's amazing how people use what-might-of been's to justify their thoughts and actions. That bill may of helped, but Fannie and May might of been too far gone at that point to help. All the problems just didn't appear over the last 3 years... It's been building up for a lot longer then that. And who knows? Increased regulation might of brought the collapse sooner. Or it may of reigned in the chaos before it got worse. The problem is that we'll never know.

                Volubrjotr speaks the truth.

In 2003, Barney Frank said, "These two entities - Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - are not facing any kind of financial crisis."

Subsequent failures and unethical bonuses and by Fannie and Freddie executives would later cost us millions...and now, a potential trillion dollars.

True. The past is past, but the arrogance of those elected to watch out for us has come back to haunt us. If there is regulation to be had, it would have been better to be exerted over misspent millions then, rather than trying to stop the hemorrhage now.

You got a point. And I stand corrected, since I didn't make myself clear enough. I was thinking more on the lines of people blaming Bush and Clinton for the mess. There were members on both sides of the parties that introduced legislation, some of it stronger and some weaker, that resembled S.190 before and after it. But politics , lobbyists, talking heads, and the media stood in the way. Just pick a slant, and you'll probably find a bill that was blocked by it. And you are right, I'd rather spend a few more dollars in protection, then hundreds afterwards to fix it. My view of it is this, if the bill had been passed and had prevented this mess. Then we'd have people screaming bloody murder about excessive over-site stifling new home ownership and wasted tax dollars enforcing overstrict regulations. There really isn't any to keep everyone happy.

but the arrogance of those elected to watch out for us has come back to haunt us

It always does, but there are people who keep electing the same people over and over again and expect a change. We need people who don't want the job, but will do it out of loyalty to the country. Not those who are more loyal to their party and the party line. The latter group on both sides seem to be the ones who get us into these messes. But we elect them anyway for a variety of reasons.

McCain says he wants to cut business taxes so companies will create jobs in the U.S. instead of moving their company to other countries and creating jobs there. Well where I live Levi Strauss moved to another country. This company has been making popular clothing for years and years. Oh and let me say that I worked in human resources for another company. We hired over 200 workers who lost their jobs when Levi Strauss moved. These people were making $7 an hour and some were still making that amount after 20 years of service when they were laid off. Also That company I worked for employed 3500 people. They made Sears and JC Penney draperies and bedding products. The last time I checked both Sears and JC Penney do not sell cheap products. Eventually I was looking for another job as this company also moved to Mexico and China. McCain doesn't get it. These companies are moving to other countries not because they are being over taxed. They want to pay less than minimum wages in order to pocket more. It's greed.

It's arguable that it is all of the above. Small businesses also suffer by heavy taxation. The McCain camp contends that Sen. Obama's plan will be the undoing of small business because of increased taxes.
