Letterman unloads on McCain for not showing up

advertisement

"Late Show" host David Letterman treated John McCain's decision to cancel an appearance on his talk show more like a stupid human trick than the act of a statesman.

The Republican presidential candidate said he was halting his campaign activities Wednesday, citing the need to deal with the nation's financial crisis, and called Letterman to drop out of the show's late-night lineup. On the air Wednesday night, Letterman assailed McCain's rationale and, with prickly humor, questioned whether the nominee — now trailing in some polls — was in trouble.

"This doesn't smell right," Letterman said. "This is not the way a tested hero behaves. Somebody's putting something in his Metamucil."

McCain spokeswoman Nicole Wallace said Thursday that the campaign "felt this wasn't a night for comedy."

"We deeply regret offending Mr. Letterman, but our candidate's priority at this moment is to focus on this crisis," Wallace said on NBC's "Today" show.

Letterman called McCain "a true American hero" but told his viewers: "This is not the John McCain I know, by God. It makes me believe something is going haywire with the campaign."

Instead of suspending a campaign, Letterman said, a presidential candidate should go to Washington to deal with a crisis and let his running mate shoulder the burdens of politicking.

"That's what you do. You don't quit. ... Or is that really a good thing to do?" Letterman said, a reference to McCain's running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. "What's the problem? Where is she? Why isn't she doing that?" he asked.

Letterman later asked: "Are we suspending it because there's an economic crisis or because the poll numbers are sliding?"

Making matters worse for McCain, his replacement was MSNBC's "Countdown" host Keith Olbermann, a constant critic of the Arizona senator.

McCain told the CBS show that he was immediately flying back to Washington, Letterman told his audience. Then Letterman showed a TV feed of McCain being made-up for an appearance on news anchor Katie Couric's "CBS Evening News."

"Doesn't seem to be racing to the airport, does he?" Letterman said. "This just gets uglier and uglier."

As McCain spoke to Couric, Letterman shouted at the feed: "Hey, John, I've got a question. Do you need a ride to the airport?"

Letterman later said: "We're told now that the senator has concluded his interview with Katie Couric and he's now on Rachael Ray's show making veal piccata. ... What are you going to do?"

What John McCain did with David Letterman goes to my core belief that not only is John McCain politically self-centered, but is a liar who can not be trusted to be president.

There mere fact that McCain blatant lie was proved on a nationally syndicated program, should sway most if not all intelligent, rational and morally aspiring people. Unless their hypocrites!

NO to a Keating 5 conspirator.

YES to integrity of Obama/Biden!

McCain could have easily called Dave and said that he felt it was necessary to speak with Couric about the economic crisis, and said that it could have been misconstrued if he went on a comedy talk show during a crisis situation in the same way that Obama withdrew from SNL because of Hurricane Ike.

Unfortunately, McCain made up a calculated lie and has been called out on it. Good. I applaud Dave for not letting it slide. I used to like McCain, but he is no longer the man I used to admire. Maverick leaders don't need to lie.

Give Dave his baba and his blankie and put him back to his crib. So McCain canceled. Boo-hoo. There was no stand in guest he could call in, no rerun to show? Given that we all pay McCain's salary, I would rather him not appear on Letterman but actually earn his pay.

Okay Donna, I will agree ditching Letterman to talk to Couric is no big deal...but please explain to me going down the block to do the Rachel Ray Show...or the fact that he isn't even in Washington right now...he's still in New York speaking at some Clinton function....I thought we were in the middle of crisis that requires canceling the debate...but he can make time for Rachel Ray and giving speeches for Bill Clinton.

    He's full of it.

McCain, nor Obama, have earned their pay as Senators every since the Presidential Campaigning started. Furthermore, McCain is not a part of any of the subcommittees currently negotiating this bailout package, so what exactly is he going to do except be part of 98 other voices in the Senate? Cancellation is one thing, the point is that he was not truthful (in other words he LIED) about his urgent need to return to Washington since he was spotted on the set of CBS. Maybe his travel plans had him in NY for only a specified amount of time and he felt it necessary to reduce his time in order to get to the airport. But he still should have told the whole truth and not omit the fact that he was still doing the CBS interview. And just in case you still don't get it, A LIE OF OMISSION IS STILL A LIE!!

On Letterman last night he toyed with the idea that by canceling this debate, McCain is setting the stage to cancel the VP debate (lordy I am/was looking forward to that one!!!) to justify still having 3 Presidential debates....hmmmmm.....

McCain made a bold/brash but ultimately ill-founded move in securing VP candidate Palin. Now McPalin finds that it cannot be in two places at once because McCain has to keep his VP nominee under lock and key. Letterman skewered McPalin effectively, redundantly, by pointing out this and several other contradictions/lies about McPalin's recent campaign tactics.

Since the U.S. is obsessed with each of us getting 15 minutes of fame (deserved or not) , and with a substantial percentage of citizens thrilled to see an incompetent right wing evangelical hockey mom build a bridge to nowhere on the Republican ticket, there is perhaps more value in Letterman pointing out some of McPalin's shortcomings than in McCain going on Katie Couric's show while hiding Palin from public view so she can't explain Troopergate.

Wow, sad state of the nation when we actually care what a late night comic has to say about the state of political affairs.
We don't know what the conversation was, we only have what Letterman blasted all over the airways. McCain could have said he needed to fly out in the morning and had a scheduling conflict or anything along those lines. It's Lettermans job to make people look like asses, which appears to have been done here.
I would much rather see an in depth interview by Katie Couric than a stupid skit pulled together by the "creative writers" on Letterman's show any day. As for appearing on the Rachael Ray show, maybe he would much rather cater to the larger audience ? Everything stated was heresay or just made up to make the man look bad .... not cool by any means.

And before you start bashing, I think both candidates aren't worth a poo this election because they are both liars. I just thought it interesting that we take serious the rantings of a comic whose is a$$ hurt because McCain cancelled.

McCain doesn't need Letterman to look like an ass. He's been doing a great job of that all on his own.

If McCain felt he would be treated unfairly with letterman, and the show is nothing but a comedy routine, why in the world would any rational politician, or for that matter intelligent being agree to be on his show in the first place.

Senator McCain is down 10 points due in part to his being out of touch with U.S. economic issues. He'd be eaten alive in a debate after saying he didn't know how many homes he owns and the economy is "fundamentally sound" just before the mortage and Wall Street crises. He know's he out of touch and unprepared and wants to a delay to try and cram in preparing himself to discuss the issue. It's the same as Palin - "Hide her someplace until she's ready."

One's occupation should not determine the validity of a point. So what he's a talk show host, he has an opinion and has a stake in the election. you must be of the Sarah Palin school of thought that a lowly "community organizer" is something to be frowned upon and dismissed. And they call Obama an elitist.

Lettermen should stick to what he does best, or tries to be the best at and that's comedy. Politics in a serious nature should not be discussed by comedians, it's degrading, and it shows just how ignorant the comedians really are of real world events.

John McCain actions were as Former President Clinton said actions made in "Good Faith", he was appealing to the importance of the matter at hand, the collapse of the U.S. Economy, perhaps Lettermen doesn't care, cause he's a cozy millionaire, but to the rest of the world... and most of America, losing our savings, our inability to get loans, including those of revolving debt (credit cards) means something, it means a lot, for some it means survival. But I guess Lettermen's true colors are not red, white, and blue, he is yellow. A coward which hides behind the vile of comedy, when in fact he is just a unpatriotic jester in the realm of this world. Taking the cream from the milk of America, and then spiting in the rest of it.

I apologize for my scathing tone, and comments, but this really irks me when someone who deserves, no respect. Tries to take the respect of great men, like John McCain. Love or hate him, the action he took, was bold, and right or wrong, was made in Good Faith.

Unless you believe it was a ploy. Letterman made a good point. It's fine if he wants to go back to Washington himself and not personally campaign... but there's no reason to suspend the entire campaign and pull all ads.

But I guess Lettermen's true colors are not red, white, and blue, he is yellow. It has to be someone's job to comment on the emperor's wardrobe choices, and honestly nobody should get a free pass just based on their past actions or calls for patriotism.

Because John McCain was a P.O.W. in the past doesn't mean he can't be a politician now.

Actually, like him and his profession or not, Letterman made a number of good points. He stated, multiple times, that he has the utmost respect for McCain's service to his country. I believe (and I may be misquoting, I'm going from memory, here) he stated "there's not an ounce of quit in that man." He said a number of positive things about McCain.

Which makes the contrast more striking. A leader meets his commitments. A leader is honest. (A "sorry, Dave, I had an interview with Katie come up, can we reschedule" would probably have been met with a lot less flak.)

And, a leader DOES NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF DISASTERS. Now it's him asking Obama to put off their debate if this disaster of a bailout plan isnt' signed by Friday. And, hey, there's a good date! We've got a hall reserved, already, we'll just reschedule the Biden/Palin debate. Great screaming purple monkeys, does he think we're STUPID? The GOP has been trying to nerf that debate so Palin can't do any more damage to the campaign than she already has, and they've already gotten concessions from the Dems so she won't have to actually DISCUSS anything, and now they want to reschedule, ideally put it off until after the election. They're already putting off releasing Palin's financial records until after the debate so she won't have to answer any questions about them, and there's now accusations of witness tampering in her ethics investigation.

Sorry, Whiz, regardless of whether or not McCain's actions in suspending his campaign were in Good Faith, it doesn't look like it. And, when Obama declined to go along with his political stunts and delays, it looks WAY to much like McCain ran to Bush to get them both recalled to Washington to "discuss" matters.

McCain has the courage to DO THE RIGHT THING!!! McCain is the BEST CHOICE FOR POTUS!!!

Right now we need Leaders who can PRIORITIZE and FOCUS instead of getting lost in the "Attention Deficit Disorder Maze" of Multi-Tasking. McCain knows the difference between what is essential and what can be rescheduled!!!

The difference between a MAN OF ACTION (McCain) and a TALKER (Obama) is that Obama is more of a Professor who likes to give lofty speeches and McCain is a person who takes charge and provides the Leadership to bring people together to find and implement SOLUTIONS!!!

Obama feels more comfortable and would much rather talk about problems then roll up his sleeves and solve the problems. In a CRISES, that is a deadly quality. Right now in the USA, we need Leaders who prioritize, find solutions and TAKE ACTION. We need ALL of our Senators and Members of Congress in Washington.

We need McCain and Obama in Washington, NOT MISSISSIPPI!!!

In this critical time, a real Leader recognizes the difference between what is important and what is ESSENTIAL. There is ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT that finding the SOLUTIONS for our Economic Crises is the MOST IMPORTANT TASK at HAND. McCain is willing to put aside his own interests for the interests of our Country; even if that is not the popular CHOICE. McCain has the COURAGE to make the hard choices and he shows time and again his willingness to serve the people and our Country above all!!!

NOW is the time to focus on OUR ECONOMY!!!
All REAL Elected LEADERS Need To BE IN WASHINGTON!!!

Well I'm not really a Democrat (they are too moderate for my tastes) though I'll be voting for Obama in November, but if he did it I'd also call it out as a campaign ploy. Putting a stop to campaign appearances is fine because they are both still sitting senators, but saying that he'll suspend every part of the campaign (while still making other appearances) is melodrama. It's theater.

Not a registered Democrat, but I'll be voting that way come November. (I think) I would react with the same outrage if it were Obama. What McCain is doing is borderline criminal. Period. I feel like I could write a book on all of the things that are wrong with what has become of the political processes in this country.

That is a dead easy question. A liar is a liar no matter his political party. Clinton lied to the American people. He will be forever branded a liar. Bush lied to the American people. He will be forever branded a liar. If Obama lies then he would carry the same stigma. This is the testing time for Obama and McCain. So far McCain is not doing so well under pressure while Obama is handling himself with great aplomb.

Okay, Michael. Honestly I would like to believe that McCain gives a rat's behind about the current economic situation, but I think it's some sort of ploy. I really can't say much more than that at this point; I'm curious to see what he has up his sleeve.

I respect the opinions and answers of all of you who have answered me so far. I just thought I'd throw something out there and see what rational people thought. What I actually expected was a barrage of "Obama has too much integrity to do that!" or something along those lines.

If we don't examine critically what the candidates of both parties say then we might has well not even have this discussion and just mark the ballots according to party which as you have so correctly pointed out would be a huge huge mistake.

I'm voting Obama and am a registered independent because I think both parties are full of bullsh*t!
That aside, it seemed like he was doing a fairly honorable thing but it turned smelling like a dead fish of a political ploy.
There have been things that Obama's done that I don't care for, The email ad and talking about his age. All we have to do is watch you can tell how old he is.
Obama has also played the sound bite game and maybe taken a few things "out of context".
But in the end I think Barrack's campaign has much more honor to it then McCain's and that's just my opinion!

If Obama lies, I'd have the same problem with his presidential run.

The way I see it, problem isn't even the oops I misspoke (like Biden getting caught describing FDR on television), the problem is the outright lies. And even worse, the "straight Talk Express" is nothing but spin, half-truths and silence (see Troopergate).

McCain could have easily reschedule Letterman. Instead he lied to a talk show host with a huge late night following. I haven't seen him in months, but I watched last night. He was very funny, pithy, direct, and very on the mark about McCain and Palin.

McCains first Interest and Concern is the Country and the People. If letterman can not accept that. he needs to go with obama who is only concerned with himself, his image and his own personal goals.

Spoken like a true Kool-Aid drunk Republican drone. McCain is not putting Country First this time. He is putting politics first, since he is just one of 100 Senators in the Senate. BTW is this crisis sooooo important that he has to cancel his job interview, for which the nation will be deciding upon who is the most qualified to assume the top leadership spot in America?

Oh, yeah and what about the fact that we already have a President in office, whose responsibility is to take the lead in this crisis. Lest I remind you of how your candidate, McCain, and his surrogates raked Obama over the coals during his overseas trip with statements like, he's already acting like he is the President, etc. Now here is McCain coming out like he's the one in charge. He hasn't been elected yet, and given his response to crisis situations over the past 6 months I personally would not want him as the leader of our country. I prefer calm, collected, reasoned and rational thought in times of crisis. Not the emotional, knee-jerk, off-the-cuff remarks we have heard from McCain.

Oh please. Show me one example of his "concern for the country." Trust me, if you think that McCain is going to Washington because of concern for country and not trying to maneuver in his effort to grab the White House, you are naive. What's the matter, does he not think that the "fundamentals of the economy are strong" anymore? Think about it. McCain's numbers in the polls are slipping because people know that the economic policies that he supports, got us in this mess in the first place. Second, he wants to postpone the debate (no easy task since the dates have been set for more than a year and the networks do not have that many alternate days available at such a last minute) even though he should be able to go to Washington and fly to Mississippi for an hour long debate. Thirdly, there is talk of rescheduling the debate on the night that Palin is supposed to debate Biden (smell fishy? More covers for Palin? What do they not want to have a vice presidential debate? Imagine that!). Fourthly, you cannot tell the American people that they have to wait to hear your positions and arguments 40 days until the election so that you can fly off to Washington when fine progress is being made WITHOUT you. Sorry, but I do not want a president that cannot multitask. In the real world, you cannot call "time out." Trust me when I say that if McCain had anything good to say in the debate, he would be anxious for it. He is running away from a butt kicking on the issues - because he has been trying to make this election about his personality. Well, Americans are realizing in this situation that McCain's personality is not going to help put food on the table or keep a roof over our heads!
