"Late Show" host David Letterman treated John McCain's decision to cancel an appearance on his talk show more like a stupid human trick than the act of a statesman.
The Republican presidential candidate said he was halting his campaign activities Wednesday, citing the need to deal with the nation's financial crisis, and called Letterman to drop out of the show's late-night lineup. On the air Wednesday night, Letterman assailed McCain's rationale and, with prickly humor, questioned whether the nominee — now trailing in some polls — was in trouble.
"This doesn't smell right," Letterman said. "This is not the way a tested hero behaves. Somebody's putting something in his Metamucil."
McCain spokeswoman Nicole Wallace said Thursday that the campaign "felt this wasn't a night for comedy."
"We deeply regret offending Mr. Letterman, but our candidate's priority at this moment is to focus on this crisis," Wallace said on NBC's "Today" show.
Letterman called McCain "a true American hero" but told his viewers: "This is not the John McCain I know, by God. It makes me believe something is going haywire with the campaign."
Instead of suspending a campaign, Letterman said, a presidential candidate should go to Washington to deal with a crisis and let his running mate shoulder the burdens of politicking.
"That's what you do. You don't quit. ... Or is that really a good thing to do?" Letterman said, a reference to McCain's running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. "What's the problem? Where is she? Why isn't she doing that?" he asked.
Letterman later asked: "Are we suspending it because there's an economic crisis or because the poll numbers are sliding?"
Making matters worse for McCain, his replacement was MSNBC's "Countdown" host Keith Olbermann, a constant critic of the Arizona senator.
McCain told the CBS show that he was immediately flying back to Washington, Letterman told his audience. Then Letterman showed a TV feed of McCain being made-up for an appearance on news anchor Katie Couric's "CBS Evening News."
"Doesn't seem to be racing to the airport, does he?" Letterman said. "This just gets uglier and uglier."
As McCain spoke to Couric, Letterman shouted at the feed: "Hey, John, I've got a question. Do you need a ride to the airport?"
Letterman later said: "We're told now that the senator has concluded his interview with Katie Couric and he's now on Rachael Ray's show making veal piccata. ... What are you going to do?"

It was a thing of beauty!! While David was relating McCaiin's tale about rushing to Washington the footage showed him in makeup and warmup with Katie. Need a ride to the airport John? tee hee!!
Still doesn't change the fact he lied to Dave. If he has no problem lying to a popular talk show host, how would McCain have any kind of problem lying to the American people?
tbirdgirl
Maybe McCain felt an interview with a News Anchor was more important than going on a show with a dried up comedian
New Socialist country? Have you checked the news lately? You're already there, thanks to your hero Bush.
From a previous CBS interview when asked "Describe a situation when you think it's appropriate to lie to the American people."
I can't imagine it, to start with, because … I just think that the one thing you have to have, as president, is your credibility. I guess you could draw a scenario where Americans were facing a threat to our very existence and you had to not have them panic or something. I'm thinking out loud here. You know ... but frankly ... I don't know of any reasonable or logical scenario where you would feel compelled to lie to the American people.

davereid...
McCain doesn't seem to have had any problems so far.
Exactly my point. :)
Just b/c I am a Republican does not mean I am a Bush fanatic. I am not a McCain fanatic either, it is simply that the Republican beliefs meet mine more than the Democratic beliefs. No one can say they agree with everything a politician says, they all make stupid mistakes like you and me, ours are just not pointed out on a daily basis. It just gets so annoying that any move either makes is just dragged through the mud. McCain should have just said that he did not want to do Dave's show and I would have had a little more respect for him. See I am not a one track person, I see wrong and right. At the end of the day I am still going to vote for him, mistakes and all.
"vote for him, mistakes and all".......now, that's scary...........
Good try people, At least McCain did the right thing, Obama as usual is dragging along not for the good of the country but for his only political career...its pretty obvious Obama is politics as usual while our country faces one of its biggest challenges in history. McCain made a choice to put the COUNTRY FIRST, looking out for all of you as he did during hurrican gustaf. Get ready for the soup kitchen
Beverly:
I hope the day finds you well and sane.
McCain has clearly put his run for the presidency first and it is obvious.
McCountry First! That's better.
Beverly, how does being interviewed by Couric and appearing on Ray's show put country first, especially after cancelling another appearance because McCain said he was flying to DC immediately?
Sorry but your spin doesn't pass the smell test.
It does pass the "I'm as deluded as McCain test", though!
mcsame is disgusting....he lies, he cheat and steals from the American People with his Keating 5 problems, continues his wacko deceptions and delusions...what a FAKE!!!
He's behind in the polls because the American People are catching on to his tricks!
The most heroic thing mcsame can do for the American People is LEAVE office without a parachute!!
Right on, tbird girl. I feel the same way you do. I can identify with Republican beliefs but that doesn't mean that I drink the Kool Aid and follow them blindly without question. Everyone makes mistakes.
McCain lies to Obama about making a joint statement, lies to Letterman within 24 hours, does anyone see a pattern here?
McCain looks like he has had a stroke. Maybe it is affecting his mental capacity.
Dave Letterman is a National Treasure, that was classic, I loved it. He did bring up some really good points, arcanebliss, where was Sara Palin ? Very good question. She was probably still hanging around the UN Lobby looking for foreign policy pointers, and experience. A taxi ride away from Dave.
Sarah Palin and John McCain are cut from the same cloth. In their zeal to help "the people," they will trample over and hurt just about anyone. John McCain obviously does not consider U of Miss and Oxford, "the people" who could be hurt by his decision to cancel the debate. Sarah Palin does not consider the people she fires, "the people" who could be hurt and devastated by her decisions.
Please save me from their zeal to help me,"the people."
Has anyone noticed that McCain's left eye lid is drooping significantly? Does he have a brain tumor?

Beverly H:
What on earth does McCain bring to the table in this debate over the bailout bill. The economy is certainly not his strong suit, and I think Obama said it perfectly yesterday that a president will have to be able to multitask. If McCain wants to swoop down on DC and save the day, let him try, I guess, but it's just to take credit for all the work that's been done throughout the week. Either way, why cancel the debate? It would take two hours to fly from DC to Oxford, MS. McCain could stay in the Senate, watching attentively as the people who know something about the economy debate the bailout, leave at 6pm, and still make it to the debate.
The economic crisis has many sides, and the American people getting to hear from their future leader, be it McCain or Obama, is a major part of that crisis resolution. Not doing the debate is tantamount to the president taking a vacation after a major event.
It's too bad McCain made such a foolish decision with his VP pick, because otherwise he could maybe send her to DC to do some meetings. Alas, Palin is a podunk governor, and Biden is a major senator. Palin is busy botching interviews, while McCain does the Racel Ray Show. Obama, meanwhile, continues to campaign, to release wise statements about the economy, and he plans to debate, whether McCain is there or not.
This is the nail in the coffin of the McCain campaign.
For some reason it tickles me to think that we may one day say that Obama owes some part of his victory to David Letterman.
Awesome!!!!!!!
tbird most peopel think bob dole would have won his election had he done the extremely liberal conservatvie hatign david letterman show.
anything else off limits fo you thin skinned conservatives? heck for yall everyone not only is everyone that disagrees with you is biased, but those that dotn outright tout your beliefs are completely biased.
heck yal;l gave the dems hell for cancling that fox debate and rightly so,.. but we have been a bit less harsh on you for cancelign dave.. and all the lack of appearances by palin.
I guess yall can cancel everything cause they are libs.. but the libs cant cancel anythign cause then they are juts being whooses.. huh?
Besure to remind everyone about he fox cancelation cause these conservatives cry liberal over the palin cancellation and now over dave. He's a freaken comdeian.. not a investigative reporter.. i mean come on.
Not to take too much attention away from what's been said, but I don't think Rachel Ray's show is shown live. He likely would have recorded it ahead of time, especially since arcanebliss's link (dated Sept 19th) has some excerpts from conversation during the show.
Still doesn't excuse the Couric thing, but it doesn't appear he was doing a show with Rachel Ray yesterday.
McCountry First!
Isn't that a new McDonald's sandwich?
Yes it is.
It's full of crap and you often forget where you've left it!
Couple facts,Racheal Rays show is taped they do them all on Mondays for the week. And typical statement "what can he do in Washington" that what he is paid to do.But then Barack did only vote present on a large amount of votes so he doesn't feel a need to do anything other then be a candidate.143 days after elected and campaigning every since. And if you people think I give a rats butt what David Lettermen rants about you as crazy as him.He is just a comedian.who thought he was the one who should take over for Johnny Carson. But was told he wasn't that good.Think about it he has a dozen writers who write his jokes and you care what he says?
Go Dave!
"He is just a comedian.who thought he was the one who should take over for Johnny Carson. But was told he wasn't that good.Think about it he has a dozen writers who write his jokes and you care what he says?"
McCain and palin have more than a dozen writers for their speech's and both are comedians who think they should take over for bush .
It isn't even biodegradable. What IS degrading is the performance McCain turned out this week - he could have asked for economics to be the topic of this debate and to push foreign policy back, but such a cogent idea did not occur to this solon.
But if he's a sorry excuse for a solon, SP is a sorry excuse for a Cylon! ;:-)
Nightmare2:
Sure, McCain's job is in the Senate, but he's sort of applying for the biggest job in the land. Do you really think that canceling the first interview is a good move?
What I mean by "what's he going to bring to the table" is simply that the economy is not McCain's deal. He thinks he's a foreign policy guy, or a reformer guy, or something. He's not sure, but he admits to not being an econ guy. So, what difference will McCain make in the process, other than strongarming the Senate to commit.
Basically, he's holding the debate hostage. This debate is vitally important. Whether they talk about foreign policy or the economy, there are a lot of undecided voters out there who want to see what the candidates have to say. Now, McCain is saying "pass the bailout or I don't debate." It's the same thing as saying "pay me the ransom, or the debate gets it!"
John McCain is making no sense by not committing to this debate. If he thinks he can do any good at all, why not do both? Is the stress of flying too much for his aging heart? It's a two hour flight from Washington to Ole Miss. You're really telling me he can't do both?
This is the most base kind of political posturing and supporting this decision is nothing short of idiotic--no offense.
Oh, take a chill pill Dave. Sorry your shorts rolled into a wad up your ass.
Big Deal, McCain cancelled . Happens all the time on Leno as well. You are just a late night talk show host. Nothing else. What a whimp ass. I'm sure you would given the same had your boy Obama if he did the same. It's not secret you are a liberal democrat so you are just doing your job.
And now my friend Fred Zepplin will play macunnication breakdown.
It's not the cancel, it's the lie.
John McCain is a liar.
Oh it's the lie? It's a freaking talk show. He cancelled. That stuff happens all the time. Daves a liberal Democrat and can be a jerk sometimes. So McCain finds a better gig. That's politics baby.
If you want to talk lies how about you telling people the OSU was going to beat my Trojans.
Boy there goes your BCS bid right down the crapper.
Jkb, I think you got the debate topic a little confussed because the debate on Friday is about foreign policy and McCain can literally stomp Obama on that issue. The truth is he felt that the issues regarding finances were a priority at this particular time, and frankly I happen to agree with him, something has to be done before the total collapse of the country. Maybe you are sitting pretty in your ivory tower but most of Americans are just like me, struggling to make ends meet month to month. Obama on the other hand does not feel the need to step up to the plate, which is how he most likely will run the country, He wants to take more from the average Americans for all of his shiney Ideas, like health care and higher taxes..
The bumper sticker gets more true with every passing day.
"Sick of this @!$%# yet? Vote Libertarian"
Tbone,
Libertarians are about as far away as the laws of physics and politics allow from the wacky nutjob, government is the answer to everything democrats who dominate the volume of posts on this board.
#1.38 - Exactly.

As to McCain stomping on Obama over foreign policy: bring it on. Regardless, I said in my post that they can change the topic to the economy if they want, but people deserve to hear from this coward, now more than ever.
As for "sitting pretty on my ivory tower," I don't sit pretty (I struggle to buy milk, pay rent, pay auto insurance, just like the rest of ya). I think Obama would be better for people like me (that is, people who make less than $40K/year) because Obama has our back. I strongly urge you to read Obama's plan for the middle class (http://www.barackobama.com/issues/economy/#tax-relief).
I don't really see how eliminating taxes for millions of seniors, eliminating taxes for millions of poor Americans, and cutting taxes for the middle class means "raising taxes," as you say. I don't think you're very well informed, Beverly.
Obama has also explained that several of his "shiny ideas" are already paid for by streamlining excessive, irresponsible spending in Washington (your boy Johnny agree with this, too). He has also explained that, given the current situation with the economy, some of his program plans will have to wait. That's a pretty responsible move. Kind of sounds like he "stepped up to the plate" given the circumstances.
I agree that something has to be done, and done quickly because our country is on the brink of something truly awful. But what, honestly, is McCain going to do to help? Suspending his campaign over this bill is just a gut reaction. Why did have to make some big drama over it. Obama called McCain first, yesterday morning, and asked to work with him to release a joint statement about what ideas are most important in the Bailout Bill. McCain apparently said sure, then stabbed Obama in the back (which speaks loads about McCain's lack of character), and went on TV and announced that he would skip the debate if the bill didn't get passed. That is such idiocy! Why not do both? Why didn't McCain simply announce that he was going to go back to Washington to help, and that he was suspending his campaign UNTIL the debate, not AT THE EXPENSE of the debate. It's just huge stunt.
Oh, yes, once more regarding my "ivory tower": just because I'm well educated and continue to pursue that education does not mean that I look down my nose at "average Americans," because I AM AN AVERAGE AMERICAN.
Your argument is empty.
hey you vote for Osamabama you vote socialist and terrorist 2 for one
You are ignorant, Elise. Ignorant.
If I'm missing some kind of sarcasm or something, then forgive me, but it sure looks like you're perpetuating hateful rumors.
NO JUST THE TRUTH
got proof?
Has anyone noticed that McCain's left eye lid is drooping significantly? Does he have a brain tumor?
It may well be a stroke.
Dave sucks, his show is phony and he's not second rate even to Leno.
Both of those shows are about Hollywood nothingness. D, DD.
Carlos Mancia, he's the man. tells it like it is, even if YOU don't like it.
jkb171
If you choose to pursue additional education rather than a career that would support you, so be it. But you struggle by choice - so why the whining?
I agree to a point, Obama's tax plan would appear to lighten the burden on whatever definition of "middleclass" is in vogue with him.
However, take a look at his plans for corporate taxation. This is where the rub lies. The basic principle is "if you want less of something tax it". Evidence of this is the tax on tobacco, gas and alchohol. Even folks like obama show an understanding of this basic principle when they propose huge taxes on guns and ammunition.
Paying a lower tax rate is great, but rather pointless is you are unemployed.
If you truely earn $40k you are in the 15% or 25% tax bracket - further reduced by EIC.
2008 Tax Brackets
Tax Rate Single Married Filing Jointly 10% Not over $8,025 Not over $16,050 15% $8,025 - $32,550 $16,050 - $65,100 25% $32,550 - $78,850 $65,100 - $131,450 28% $78,850 - $164,550 $131,450 - $200,300 33% $164,550 - $357,700 $200,300 - $357,700 35% Over $357,700 Over $357,700
My point in all this? Taxes are not your biggest problem. Taxes suck, we all agree. But what you need is more income, which you choose to forego or postpone to pursue education. Fine by me as long as you live with your choice - and let me live with mine.
The issue is it often seems "lower taxes for middle class" becomes a code word for "I want a hand-out".
Hand-outs dont work. Face it, the problem we are in today is due to a social program run semi-covertly by Barney Frank & co. Based on legislation he sponsored loans were made to folks that had no hope of paying them off. Granted, greed took it from there and these bad loans were packaged, sold and traveled far and wide through our financial system. And trust me I blame Bush for a good part of this...
What we should learn from this is government meddling in the private sector (no matter how righteous the cause) does not work.
Leave charity to the church, let the government defend us or leave us alone and let captialism thrive.
Raising corporate taxes will strangle our economy.
Raising corporate taxes will strangle our economy.
Would that be the opposite of the great economic health we're seeing from the current policies??
Pamela,
You are correct.
The great "economic health" we are seeing today is in great part attributable to current policies put forth by Barney Frank & Co.
Loans for people that cannot pay them back is bad policy - and bad business.
Now we pay the bill.
Oh and Pam,
While you are checking out policies that effect the economy and your pocket book.
Take a look at where your representatives stand on energy independence for America.
Its a supply and demand thing...
Now we pay the bill - at the pump.
FYI
The story is all over Progressive Talk Radio today about the McCain
campaign sending absentee ballot applications to registered democrats or
people that have donated to Obama's campaign. These ballots are
deliberately misleading and have postage paid return addresses that are
for an election clerk that is outside of your city or town. What this
will end up doing is either having your vote not counted, or if you
return one of these, they will cite you for election fraud, saying that
you already voted absentee. These ballots are only being sent out in
'purple states' and this is a big deal.. This is called voter caging,
and is a huge problem.
The McCain campaign is stealing this election as we speak. Please get
this information out to as many people as you can, and tell anyone you
know who has received one of these ballots that they need to contact
their city election clerk or the supervisor of elections immediately.
Also call the local media and let them know what is going on.
The main stream media is never going to cover this so we have to depend
on our ground campaign to get the word out to our voters.
Gabriel:
If you choose to pursue additional education rather than a career that would support you, so be it. But you struggle by choice - so why the whining?
1) What whining? All I said was that I'm not "sitting pretty in an ivory tower," an unreasonable personal attack from Beverly. She brought up this issue that because I'm an Obama supporter, I must be rich and unconcerned for "average Americans." I am an average American. Or, better, I'm no less an American than she is, which was certainly suggested in her post.
2) I don't "struggle by choice." I believe that my calling is in education. Guess what, you don't get to be a teacher if you don't go to school. You want to tell me that educators deserve low pay because we were so foolish as to get educated and for wanting to share that education?
3) The last thing I want is a hand out. I've worked hard my whole life and I've never asked for anything, I've never complained at tax time, and I give back to my community. Hand outs cut both ways, don't forget. Sometimes hand outs are given to corporate powers, which is clear enough from the debates about the "golden parachutes" in this bailout plan. For some reason, at some point, "hand out" became this clever way of referring to lazy poor people, but think about it, Democrats want to give money to people who don't have it; Republicans want to give money to people who have tons of it. It's a hand out either way. I'm not asking for one, because, Mr. Gramm, I'm not a whiner.
jkb171
1) Thanks for your thoughtful response. If I offended you I appologize.
2) I am in favor of increasing compensation for educators. Would like it to have some form of pay for performance. Attract the best, keep the best and pay the best.
3) Me too, but I complain at tax time. It is also on this point I think we would find some discussion is due. Giving money to people that dont have it, generally speaking, doesnt solve the problem. Giving money creates dependency, dependency is a form of control. Republicans, generally speaking, are not for giving money to people who have tons of it. Republicans, in most cases, simply want to leave people with tons of money with their fair share. Tax rates > 40% are simply stealing. It is after all their money - they earned it one way or another.
My point was really about the adverse effect of raising corporate taxes. We all depend on a healthy economny which is made up of healthy corporations. Allowing the parasite of taxation to bloat itself on American corporations will not benefit any of us.
Gabriel:
OK, none taken, then--it felt aggressive, but I was probably being too sensitive or defensive of my years devoted to school.
I agree that just giving money away carelessly is dangerous. I do, though, disagree with the idea that economic strength trickles down. Perhaps it's easy for me, as one who stands to benefit, to say, "hey, let's try cutting taxes for the middle class and raising it for the ultra-rich." I don't want to take an unfair amount of money from someone who makes, let's say $2m a year. They might have worked hard for that and they deserve it. If, however, someone making $2m/year is taxed 42% (just going off of your number), they still clear $1.16m (if I save every penny I make, I won't have that much money for thirty years--I know, I decided to teach, but some of these people who turn hand over fist just got lucky or exploit natural gifts (looks, athleticism, etc)). If those people can get even 5% on that $1.16m in interest from investments or in a good bond, they'll bring that back down to under 40%.
I guess the problem with what my politics are supporting is that given the market these days, asking for 5% growth may be a stretch. I also recognize that when you're successful and you're making good money, you are more likely to buy a nice car, buy a nice home, take nice trips...I would!...but all I'm asking is that those wealthy people make a small sacrifice (no new Bentley this year?) to give the rest of us a chance at building our own security
In the end, taxes are not an issue that sways my vote, and my feelings are most interested in curbing irresponsible spending in Washington (which for me is mostly the war), the environment, and, probably predictably, the social stuff, like Roe v. Wade, gay rights, equal pay, etc. If I'm honest with myself, even in a time of terrible economic distress, I vote for those social issues that I think will make our country a better and more just place.
Go tbirdgirl- hey you vote for Osamabama you vote socialist and terrorist 2 for one!!! Letterman has no ratings anyway washed up hasbeen
Just so people know, elise huntington's banned. Good job reporting.
Ding Dong the witch is dead!
Why is your post green and why is Elise Huntington banned? I'm getting sick of this censorship and all the NNN's.
Let her talk. Tyler - FYI I reported your lame assed post as adding no value.
Newborn Newsvine Nazis - buncha damn whiners.
Nightmare2
"...if you people think I give a rats butt what David Lettermen rants about you as crazy as him. He is just a comedian......Think about it he has a dozen writers who write his jokes and you care what he says?..."
Ummmmm, hey Nitemare2-, McFly has writers too, and speakers, and fall guys and excuse-makers, and memory-helpers, and so on..... and you care what they...oops, I mean, what 'he' says?
TBone, Tyler's post is green because he works at Newsvine. If you look at his name and follow it over to the end of the block it has it there.
And usually it is for more then one bad post. If you insult other posters or go way off topic, then the moderator can ban you. If you do in multiple posts and on multiple seeds, the Newsvine gets involved and makes the decision to suspend or ban you. It's ok to have a difference of opinion, but at least be civil about it. I can't judge since some of the recent comments on her bio page are deleted in the actual seeds, but then, I'm not supposed to. That's up to the seeders and NV.
I'm getting sick of this censorship and all the NNN's
Then leave. If you can stay on topic and be at least respectable to others, then stay. I know since I've had posts deleted by NV, but I insulted others in them w/o thinking first. All I had to do was repost, and be a little more polite while doing it.
Tyler works for Newsvine and he posts NoValue and Off Topic replies? Wow! Maybe I will unsubscribe, who needs that crap just to read the news?
OnTopic: I see why McCain didn't show up on Letterman. He should have stayed home from the debate as well.
TBone, Tyler's comment was not without value. Elise has said many things that were against the CoH, repeated infractions would elicit harsher stipulations. Moderators, such as his case, moderate. His comment is warning to those that would follow in Elise's footsteps.
Sorry Justin but I vehemently disagree. It was off topic and had no value in this thread. If it is a "warning", as you suggest, than I sure as @!$%# don't want to see it. I don't come here and contribute to Tyler's bread and butter to be warned.
I have been posting in user discussion forums since the advent of the old Usenet. I created the forum alt.flyfishing and alt.binaries.pictures.fishing and was a charter member of rec.outdoors.fishing.fly.
We used to say it like this: To post something off topic is drivel. To complain about that post is double drivel and that is a foul. Tyler's post is a clear case of double drivel and I will report every damned one of them I see.
On Topic: I am so glad Obama brought up the Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran and McCain's genocidal comments towards the Koreans in the debate tonight.
Tbone, the thing is Newsvine is supposed to be a community. The CoH lends credence to that ideal. However, ultimately this product is not the community's, it's Newsvine's. Their terms of service are to follow the CoH, and those that don't are denied service. As it was, he was warning the community as a whole, not just you.
And to your point of posting back to the Usenet days, it was a teeny bit harder to erase or moderate posts. Currently, I'm a weekend moderator on 3 different forums, maintain 2 web pages, a fan site (when I have time), and try to keep a wireless network up between my neighbors house and mine (They can't get Internet service.) And all self taught. Tyler's one of the newest NV's and looks like he's doing a decent job for a noob. And if he drops the post in the wrong area, then remember he's had to look at all the posts of that person. It'd be understandable if he put the post in the wrong area. Just in catching up on the older posts, I saw other posts by Elise Huntington, and now fully agree with Tyler. If you don't like it, then email him and let him know your reasons why. And if you don't, then don't complain about it.
And if you saw the debate, then you probably saw the same thing that I did. It was mainly a rehash of the previous weeks... Very few firm ideas and points were brought up. This is going to be a long 40 some-odd days. I'm starting to wish it was over already.
Tyler's one of the newest NV's and looks like he's doing a decent job for a noob.
It's a thankless job and we need him so let's go easy on the poor boy for a little while. :~)
#1.87 The problem is that it's far too easy to be censored or posts deleted because you simply disagree or use a more colorful approach. It completely ruins it for me, we get that crap everywhere else. Elise said "Osama Bama". Big effing deal. Ya know? It is NewsVine's IP, for sure...but they need posters and they need color or else it's just BORING!
OnTopic: I'm glad McDipstick dissed Letterman. Gives David a lot of great material while simultaneously revealing the character of the worst presidential candidate in our history. Also Ms. Drew, I'm still writing you in for President. Maybe Keld Bach for VP, wait he's like Norwegian or something isn't he? DRAT!
Also Ms. Drew, I'm still writing you in for President.
You like a leader with no diplomatic skills do you? I would clean up the toxic foods in a hurry though, if they let me live we could slash those earmarks in a weekend and then go for the mother lode at the Pentagon; heck they've got way more than $700 billion missing. Find that!

Only as a sycophantic puppet to use in my machiavellian schemes to conquer the world, :::wrings hands and cackles like Cheney:::
I can't remember so many Letterman-articles repeated over and over again. I guess he's the premier spokescomic for Obama at the moment. Jon Stu must be pulling his hair out on accounta his is so much more elevated.
I'm excited with anticipation to see Letterman's ratings from last night. Does he still do the Letterman Fidget?
Baaaaw.
Letterman had excellent points, why did McCain cancel his appearance with the Letterman show and front that he was "immediately flying to Washington" and then do a CBS interview? lol?
Do you choose to ignore that McCain also pulled this same trick in the previous election and held multiple interviews about his stunt?
Anyone ask why Bush opted out of the convention with a weaker hurricane like Gustav, & McLiar said this was all about "America First", but I did not drop campaigning for the Monstrous IKE that beat the hell out of Galveston.
Now the economy sky is falling and McChicken Little wants to stop everything accept his makeup chair with Katie on CBS.
Why is this falling on deaf eyes.
Why is this falling on deaf ears, DragonWoman? Because McCain is a POW. It's his carte-blanche. You're not suggesting we challenge the intentions or motivations of an American hero, are you?
After watching McCain closely for the last few weeks, I have concluded that he has a reactionary personality. Instead of him leading, he allows the situation to lead him. He doesn't appear to be a man who can concentrate on any given circumstance for very long. It is as if he gets bored with the status quo. I think this is the reason why he changes directions so often and I think this is why some of his decisions make no sense.
Is this the kind of president that we want? Didn't we just go through a guy with no plans, no ideas, no road to follow, and no agenda. I agree that Obama doesn't have a lot of experience, but experience isn't the quintessential reason to vote for a candidate. In 2004, the most experience candidate was George Bush and looks where he has taken us. No, we need a president with progressive ideas, in a progressively changing world that won't wait for us evolve.
If McCain wins and runs the country the way he has run his campaign, I won't be surprise to see Europe and Asia pass us by.
Hero?
I supported John McCain in 2000. In my opinion, what George W. Bush did to him in the Carolinas was despicable, and made it impossible for me to ever vote for Bush. In my view, the presidential elections are entirely about the characters of the candidates. Times change so policies change, but I believe a person's character, a person's core, is immutable. The facts about John McCain's youth, that he goofed off in school, coming in 5th from the bottom of the 899 cadets in his class, that he got into and through Annapolis through his Admiral father's influence, that he was captured and imprisoned in Viet Nam, that in his old age he says he can't remember how many houses he owns or how much money he has, I take all these with a grain of salt. The young often grow out of their foolishness and perform a brave act, and the old sometimes forget.
I just can't bring myself to vote for someone I now know to be an adulterer.
This year I learned that John McCain met Carol Shepp, a swimsuit model from Philadelphia, in 1964. They married in '65 and had a daughter. While John was imprisoned in Nam, Carol was in an accident that ruptured her spleen, broke her arm and her hip, and crushed both her legs, leaving her six months in the hospital. Two more years and 23 operations left Carol four inches shorter than when she'd first met John. When John was released from Nam, he told friends she was "…not the woman I married." His POW status allowed him to strike up a friendship with the Reagans. While Carol worked in Ronald Reagan's 1976 presidential campaign, John had extramarital affairs. In 1979, a 42 year old John chased a 24 year old beer distributor heiress, Cindy Lou Hensley, around a buffet table set up to honor veterans, and had a relationship. Months later John shocked Carol and the Reagans with his divorce demand. I have yet to hear that the Reagans forgave him.
Now John has admitted his sin and I can forgive, as Jesus would have me do. But then, it's not hard to forgive a man for breaking his solemn promise to someone else. And if he and Carol had agreed to a divorce, releasing each other from their vows, before he started having affairs, I could forget. But John couldn't wait. And now he proposes to share the Oval Office with a former beauty pageant "Miss Congeniality". What I can't do is ever trust a man who breaks the most sacred oath a person ever takes, "…to love and to cherish…in sickness and in health…till death do us part."
I suppose there are those who would see nothing wrong with doing what John did and would find some way to defend it, but I believe that to keep our sacred oaths against the pull of animal instinct is where true courage and true character are found.
How can he ever be trusted to keep any promise he makes about judges or the unborn or anything else, if he can't keep the most sacred one?
LOL BCB even you can spin some support for this nascence huh? If this was obama.. we would have 9000000 posts about it.. and yakll would scream it proves he has somethign to hide and the pimadonna/messaih refuses to let americans find ou more about him..
try and deny it.
Funny how we can sit in judgement on someone elses sins, when we have our own. Add this one to your ticker, his running mate stands for no form of birthcontro other than abstanance, yet she got pregnant, then ran off to get married. I say again if God gives us choices, than who is man that he should pass laws and insist that the world abide by them. Or that he should insist that the world abide by his example. for surely, we all sinned and fall short.

We're not supposed to judge McCain, just blindly follow? Of course we all sin- some sin better than others and some consciously do their best to not sin. At the end of the day everyone of us has sinned.
OK, now what does this have to do with McCain not showing up last night for The Letterman Show?
Ever notice how the liberal comedians, i.e. Stewart, Colbert & Letterman, are funny....whereas the conservative humor-men like O'Reilly and Hannity, aren't?
Most Conservatives don't have a sense of humor, it takes intelligence's to be funny.
Gary AndrewS,
You're a poet as well as an author. No one respects marrage these days.
Hell at the convention they painted Cindy McCain as the 2nd coming of Claira Barton.
But of course, Anjelia Jolie adopts and Cindy adopts, so that whips away the sin. And both can bury their pretty heads in the sand that their marraige is DIFFERENT.
Yes we are all sinners, but we do not paint ourselves over as Heros.
Thank you!! :)
GA -
Wow. You put it so well - it is the character test that McCain fails. From the Keating 5 to the Cheating drive, this man has not shown the ability to do what is morally straight at the right moment. History will soon make him a footnote - and this latest flimsy excuse is a turning point, one that has shown America that an unscripted John Sidney McCain must have left something behind in the Hanoi Hilton. I can only hope that he might grow a new pair some day.
Oh. That's right. SP has big enough ovaries for the both of 'em! (So why didn't she do the show?)
2.11
I see where DanHallo says conservatives don't have a sense of humor, and you have to be intelligent to have one. How right you are Dano..
Look how many liberal Democrats are taking this issue so serious....................PRICELESS............
Sometimes in life issues such as these, one with a hallow feeling deep down and festers into a boil on the butt of the US
digadogabone Very good, imagination is even more important then intelligence is.
Actually Dan I think good old fashioned common sense trumps them all
Extremist Moderate -- O'Reilly and Hannity are comedians? I never knew!
Well if O'Reilly & Hannity are not comedians, and they surely can not be NEWS reporters,
what are they there for?
Could they be the "commentators" Gov Palin was talking about at the convention?
I think so.
common sense... no such thing.
The only thing that McCain has proved in this campaign is he is completely devoid of any scruples and is not a hero in my book along with most Americans. This along with his attempt to look presidential in the baknking problem are just proof the man does not will not nor has ever had one ounce of Presidential blood in his frail old body.
Letterman's rating are not up to Leno's because his comedy is generally more intellectual. Leno plays well for those with 8th grade intellect (seriously) I am not trying to be insulting or funny. McCain used to be a regular guest on JStewart until he was asked why he abandoned all of his personal beliefs from his previous runs for president to gain the nomination this time. I supported McCain in 2000, and though he should consider an in dependant run when Bush receive the nomination. He is no longer a respectable, honest person. We have had 8 years of that type of president and it is time for another direction.
Obama/Biden time
America (all of it) first
Well you stump for your beliefs and I will stump for mine.
Common sense? not around here.
McCain is a LIAR!!! He called Letterman PERSONALLY about not being able to show up for the taping!!! What's wrong with just telling the truth!!! It seems like he has a continuous problem with TRUTH. This was something very minor. What else is he lying about? If you can't be trusted with small issues that speaks volumes about TRUTHFULNESS in the larger issues. HE'S PATHETIC!!! Take the OW out of POW and replace it with these befitting letters COWARD!!!!!!!!
PCOWARD?
Can we ask him to suspend his campaign until 11/5? That would be awesome. Except REALLY suspend it. Wherein you stop going to softball interviews and fund raising and running attack ads, that kind of suspend.
That is a point; "until this crisis is over" -- Umm, the last recession lasted a bit longer than a weekend. It does ring hollow with people who have been following the campaigns. Is John McCain really going to hunker down and fix this thing using the 'little grey cells'? McCain isn't exactly the guy I want putting his mind to fixing the economy.
He threw integrity away a long time ago. Perhaps when he joined politics and threw away his 1st wife (the handicapped/poor one) for the princes of beer.
The comments are pathetic. This "crisis" being referred to is not a recession, it's a potential depression. As I understand it, until Congress resolves the issue or "crisis", very little money is going to be available for loans. So guys, you may not be able to use credit cards, get house and car loans. The "crisis" is waiting for Congress to pass a bill allowing US tax money to be used to resolve the crisis, at least for the short term.
Those that have paid attention would have noticed references that a bill needs to be signed by Friday or so. Instead, everyone thinks the campaign and talk shows are more important. Get a reality check people.
I suspect, most will respond by calling McCain and the Republican's liars rather than discuss the issues. This would seem to show that you don't know what you're talking about, don't care about the country, and your talk isn't relevant to this discussion.
msame is part of the PROBLEM his ceo cronnies, his DEREGULATION on the banking Industry, he wants to spread his corruption even more with health care. msame is a disgrace to the American People...Leave Mcsame , take your porkbelly palin, bush chaney/ weapons of mass distruction and pathtic "pretend lies" to help the American People with you. how about going to pulto without a parachute??
Deception to the 95% of American People is his campaign slogan he only addresses the top 5% the most heroic thing mcsame can do is leave the planet!
He thinks we can't add, can't read, can't see, can't think. Does he think he's not being recorded?? he's gotton away with so much deception that he thinks doesn't not have to be accountable! NOT!!!
on Monday the economy was fundamentally sound, on thursday he needs to put his slam campaign on hold because he needs to take care of the economy. Bu******
he wants to take care of his cronies because it's last call for his deceptions....He'll never make it to the White House as President!~
Can we ask him to suspend his campaign until 11/5?
No, but we really should just postpone the election. We can't have people worried about choosing new leaders when such a major economic problem must be dealt with. Country first, after all. We really can't afford to have changes in Washington until a solution is discovered. This is such a major issue for America, it's much more important than debates and policy issues and choosing new representatives and leaders for the future. Country first, right? Once the current President Bush has decided the economic problem is resolved, then we can hold the election.
"Instead, everyone thinks the campaign and talk shows are more important"
Like the Rachel Ray show?
The comments are pathetic. This "crisis" being referred to is not a recession, it's a potential depression.
What recession or depression? Two weeks ago McCain was saying the fundamentals of the economy were sound. Could he have been out of touch that much? Tell me it isn't so.
i guess if soemthign happens nearer to the election we shoudl just postpone it all.
but in all fairness mccain has missed more senate votes than anyone.. it is plainly obvious he can not do two things at once.
Whyren:
Delay the election?????
Are you smoking crack??????
I think it was sarcasm, or if not indeed you may be right.
ComSen,
GOP fear mongering no longer works. If it's not signed by Friday the economy collapses? Who's putting this gun to our heads? How about Monday, or even next Friday-that's no good; a total meltdown?
Ridiculous.
I'm sure now of us would ever lie it is just beyond us. John was a pow and I see no reason to call him a coward. Let's call him a honorable man that wants to win the white house. Being a pow doesn't automatically convert to president, votes does, why bad mouth the man. If you don't want him;or if you want him to be president, then show up at the polls. That will make the difference. What can I say? John McCain is a like-able person. I will not vote for him, but as a fellow American I do like him.
Barb:
I used to like him and have voted for him (in the past).
I think he has dishonored both himself and the American people he claims to serve.
paid attention would have noticed references that a bill needs to be signed by Friday or so.
Says who, the geniuses who felt Wall Street didn't need regulation to keep it in check? The people who want to make sure their portfolios don't tank because these investment banks collapse?
The only reason this "bailout" is being rushed, is so that none can question whom is the beneficiary of it. And because it is quite probable that the bandits in charge will no longer have a key to the till in around 45 days...
Haha, Paulson's plan is 853 words. John McMavsham couldn't even be arsed to read it. He's just going to FIX things. With MAGIC and hyperbole.
Can we ask him to suspend his campaign until 11/5?No, but we really should just postpone the election. We can't have people worried about choosing new leaders when such a major economic problem must be dealt with. Country first, after all.
That's great. An indefinite third term for Bush. I hope you aren't serious, because here you come across as the American equivalent of a Mugabe henchman. Or maybe one for the late Mabuto Sese Seko? If we didn't suspend elections in a true crisis like 1864, what makes you think we should do so now???
Not the elections, suspend his campaign. I am not for holding up the election. I just wish McCain would opt out.
He could campaign at the Wal-Mart after President-Elect Obama gets voted in. Of course Obama'd still have to run against Bob Barr and Ralph Nader but...
Hillarious! Dave was in the zone!
I think we've all told little white lies to get out of something we don't want to do. Calling in sick to get a day off of work. Claiming that we already have plans to avoid a family dinner. McCain actually got caught in the lie. And Letterman was not a good person to get caught by. McCain should have known that if he got caught, Dave would take every opportunity to exploit it -- which he did. And a lot of people pay attention to what Dave has to say.
The problem is that this is a pattern with McCain. He and his campaign lies when telling the truth would be so much easier. The excuse/lie is supposed to be better than the truth. He could have just told Dave that this wasn't a good time. He wouldn't have been the first person to cancel at the last minute. Just tell the truth, John.
gbrown and David Letterman told you this ?? Sure how about your boy Clinton on EVERY TELEVISION network saying over and over he and Hillary know John McCain wanted more debates than OsaMAbAMA MAN AND that he was not scared????????: yea BABY
Once the current President Bush has decided the economic problem is resolved, then we can hold the election.
That sounds like something between authoritarianism and martial law. It just sounds BAD,
I watched Letterman`s show, he seems right on all accounts. Dang! a Dear John call canceling? With McCain`s history maybe he would of showed if Dave wore a dress?
Cancel a debate 40 odd days before an election? To join the party for morons that got us in this mess? Must be free Caviar for lunch. Maybe afraid to miss out on the gift exchange? er, Campaign contributions.
Good job Letterman.
Spread the truth to the people.
McCain has turned this race into a circus, only he is a dancing bear not the ringmaster.
McCain, McCain, McCain....
First rule for skipping ANYTHING: Don't be caught in public! Did you not watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off?
McCain: Ferris Wheel? Ferris Who?
McCain told the CBS show that he was immediately flying back to Washington, Letterman told his audience. Then Letterman showed a TV feed of McCain being made-up for an appearance on news anchor Katie Couric's "CBS Evening News."
"Doesn't seem to be racing to the airport, does he?" Letterman said. "This just gets uglier and uglier."
ahahaha
This morning he was giving a speech in New York. I'm not sure, but I think the Senate meets in Washington.
Was it a political speech?
Or was he lecturing on the economy, because that is his strong suit?
Suspend buttons or pause buttons
We have them on our tape player/recorder's and our DVD player/recorders and you can temporarily halt a microwave or turn your stove on or off , but in the world of domestic and international politics there is no such thing as a pause button where the President of the United States can control the actions of other leaders or terrorist groups and try and shape the events in a manner more to his liking.
I wonder if Al Quaeda is going to check and see if what they are planning is okay with John McCain, or will rogue Arab states promise to consult with him before they raise oil prices or invade their neighbors, or even worse will Russia and China stop their Geo political moves to let McCain get up to speed. The truth is for all of his good qualities John McCain lacks perhaps the most critical ability and requirement for the POTUS which is staying abreast of current events and the ability to make good quick decisions. Nothing else could demonstrate McCain's total lack of understanding than his statements regarding the economic situation we face today. In a little over 10 days he demonstrated just how out of touch with reality he really is with the facts concerning the state of the American Economy. While experts were warning of impending financial disaster John McCain said the fundamentals of our economy were strong, then in less than 10 days he suspends his campaign supposedly to rush back to Washington to try and act like he and he alone can avert the looming financial disaster facing Wall St and America .
But the truth is he is simply in over his head and his actions show he is not suited to be President of the United States and Leader of the free world. America and the world needs a smart, informed , logical thinking person at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Not a old patriot who sacrificed for our country 40 years ago. The Model T revolutionized the American Automobile industry and made us the envy of the world but today it is obsolete and the American Automobile Industry is facing unprecedented challenges for world supremacy. The Model T out lived it's usefulness and it now sits in museums in Dearborn Michigan a relic of a bygone era, and no one thinks bringing it back will save America . John McCain is a old man with old ideas in a world that moves at the speed of light he is worthy of honor for his sacrifice but not our vote for President..
McCain also said he was leaving this morning for Washington...but I guess that doesn't matter...Letterman is a has been
A has been?
Beverly, it's Leno who is going off the air next year, not Letterman.
Letterman is a has been
What's that make John? A once was?
mcsame is a has been:
has been not truthful
has not been ethical
has not be an asset to our country
has been not honest to 95% of the American People
has not been fair to the Press playing games with porkbelly palin
has not been separated from bush/chaney or lobbyist that do not have the best interest of the American People in mind
has not been caring about country first , it's always been mcsame first
has not been interested in helping save our country at all
has not been heroic as a politician
just because he was a pow doesn't mean that he can run the country. he can't even run his campaign, his mind, his mouth or his email
say goodbye mcsame
Ok, you do not like McCain, we get it. Could you at least call him by his name? I do not know why but it bugs me when people start with the name calling. Sorry for the rant.
publius.. i now expect you to come out against the nobams.. the differnt between obama and ossama is a little bs.. the barack hussein obamas and the obama is a muslim. barrackkt he messiah, barrack the celb... i mean seriously you act like this is one way.. the mud has definately been dirtier thrown at this side.. and some of them mud balls had rocks in them.
It would seem that in this day and time lying isn't the problem, getting caught is.
Joules,
What makes you think I support name-calling either way?
McCain, McCain, McCain....
First rule for skipping ANYTHING: Don't be caught in public! Did you not watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off?
Bueller...............Bueller..............Buellllerrrr.................?.............McCain.........McCain.........McCain........?
Joules, What makes you think I support name-calling either way?
He wasn't saying you did. Since you spoke up here, I think he was challenging you (and others) to speak up when Obama is called disrespectful names. Maybe you do already; I don't know.
Fantastic! Go Dave!
To give you an idea of the disparity in how this is being covered:
Yesterday when McCain broke the news that his doomed campaign was on hold and the debates in question, I logged onto Fox News to see their spin. After the story they had comments from readers as they usually do, and there were 8 responses, all glowingly positive. I decided to add my two cents, and while negative I was deferential (which Sarah Palin requires me to be). I submitted my comment and then went to another site.
About twenty minutes later and their were eleven comments, mine not among them. Surprise, they were all still so positive. I went to another site and came back ten minutes later and there were 33 responses, all positive.
This morning they are back to eight glowingly positive comments all commending McCain for his deft and Presidential decision making capability.
Does this seem strange to anyone other than me?
I welcome the Republicans on Newsvine to explain this phenomenon to me.
Love the sarcasm!!!! And you couldn't be more accurate!! I am a Obama supporter but you would think with all this truth coming to light you would think that this election should be a slam dunk.......right!
Too damn bad we have so many racists and people that just don't care!! What happened to this country!
I tried adding my comment to Fox News. It was a dissenting opinion, but not hateful, angry or insulting. None of them have made through...
I'm shocked I don't have a dissenting opinion yet from some of our Republican Friends.
My Friends, please explain this to me...
Bluekilgoretrout: Here are the reasons why The Honorable Senetor McCain did this: he never said he'd do the interview. The injuries he sustained as a POW prevent him from remembering where he is supposed to be. The Esteemed Presidential Nominee McCain is also a maverick, and mavericks show up where ever they want.
Hell, I thought it was a political ploy????
Glad to know we can just explain it away with dementia and brazen, stupid arrogance.
This is comforting.
Yes, it's one thing to have Hannity or O'Reilly up there spinning to the right, MSNBC has Olbermann, Maddow, and to a lesser extent Matthews spinning left. It's another thing to claim that you have an open forum and then deliberately delete any dissenting opinion. Just scary.
(kingmarty was also being sarcastic, kilgore- not sure if you caught it--- but great comment on the propaganda machine up top- nice job- that cr@p needs to be exposed)
Oh, I am well aware of sarcasm in all its forms.
It may very well be my religion.
My comment to Kingmarty should also be read as sarcasm.
Blue, Maybe because our Nation is in a state of disaster, and if your as rude there as you usually are here, they probable didn't feel the need...Your just upset because McCain made the right decision again and it took the president to get Obama to realize the need to return to Washington...Once again Obama showed poor judgement
Disaster Beverly? Really? I made it up and to work this morning, I didn't really see any disaster. McCain is horrible at economics, and will do more good staying far, far away from this problem.
Beverly:
I have no idea what you said. Please clarify or realize it is wasted on me.
McCain made the right decision yeah right
The right decision would have been to not get out of bed yesterday!
We know that you can say nothing neg. about rep. on fox. But Sarah came up is beyond me. Seeing as how John want to debate Barack on Oct.2nd, the day that Joe Debates Sarah. It's kinda of obvious why he wanted to back out of the debate Friday night
it took the president to get Obama to realize the need to return to Washington
In fact it was McCain who called Bush to ask him to provide McCain some cover by saying Bush wanted to meet with them, which made it look like they were needed back right away. Read the article seeded at: Obama, McCain & Bush in White House summit: photo op or negotiating session
HEY FISH FACE CLINTON WAS ON EVERY NETWORK STATING"john mccain wanted more debates than Osamaman and Hillary and I know he would not be afraid. Go watch the news fishhy
Elise:
Find your medication and take double.
If you believe your last post then post the source as well. I recall McCain wanting more town hall meetings where he is comfortable and can grandstand.
By the way your Maverick candidate has derailed the talks on a Wall Street Bailout for the glorification of his own ego, and so he won't have to show up for the debate.
Not surprising....nothing constructive here in terms of comments so far. Just libs blowing off steam, again.
OPEN YOUR EYES!
Oh, Smitty.
Letterman said it all and more for most of us. =]
And if Obama did the same you'd be crying foul....so give me a break rennurtasf
Not surprising....nothing constructive here in terms of comments so far. Just libs blowing off steam, again.
Yeah, you're right. It's only the conservatives that are allowed to blow off steam. Gosh... what were we thinking...
I wouldn't waste too much time on Rennurfast's comment (dumbocrats), it will be collapsed before the days out.
Wow, all the Republicans on here can muster is a few empty insults...must be getting pretty desperate over there.
I want to hear the spin from Roy Wilson or the other usual suspects on here. At least he can piece a few coherent sentences together- no matter how misguided.
Naw SC Smitty, its just your candidate outright lying again!
ScSmitty would'nt know the facts if they bit him on his behind
mcsame looks like bush mroe and more.. bush would also lie when he had zero reason to.
aka bush on the fired attoneys.. he said his office had zip to do with it.. whenall he had to say was .. yeah i fired them so waht.. i was the lie that made it a huge deal..same with mccaiin
THis would make zero news if mccain did not lie... he coudl have said" you are ufair.. to liberal.. or i'd rather do a news shoiw tonight than a comedy one" and there woudl be no news on this but maybe a blurb.. But he DECIDED TO LIE INSTEAD/
He choosed to lie to all of us/
I'd honestly like to know what McCain thinks he can do that's so important he must rush back to D.C. and skip the debate. He's not an economic expert, unless you want to count the fact that he's been pushing for YEARS for the deregulation that's allowed this collapse to happen. Does he have some sort of big plan that'll solve everything that he's been sitting on? If so, why on Earth hasn't he SAID SOMETHING?
No, he just wants to take advantage of the situation to pose, and to push off the debates schedule so he can cancel Palin's. Oh, sorry, wants to reschedule her debate until some unnamed future date.
I work in Human Resources. It's really a simple concept. If you decide to skip the interview, we HIRE SOMEONE ELSE.
in case you great knowledgeable people did not Know Katy Couric is taped Racheal is taped.Rays show is taped on Mondays for the whole week.Couric Show uses taped segments as was the McCain segment, and when it was over he went straight to the airport.
You keep throwing the word lie out Well guess what Barack does it to only he call denial.Rev Wright, didn't hear anything wrong ,for 20 yrs,Didn't know about Ayers he headed one of his committees.Johnson was not an adviser He helped him chose Biden. The mess on Wall St. was started in 1999 under Bill Clinton read the Gramm Leach Bliley Bill that he signed. But of course Obama the king who was in office 143 days before he announced his run for President and who voted present wouldnot feel it important to be in Washington to vote on any anything as trival as 700Billion dollars. He might miss the chance to tell a group"by the way hes black"
Nitemare:
Couric's show was being taped live during Letterman's show. He showed it on his show. McCain is STILL in New York. Or at least was as of this morning.
McCain is part of the reason we're in this mess. He was pushing for deregulation long before he wanted to postpone his campaign and postpone the debates to flip-flop on that, too.
I can't honestly recall Obama bringing up the fact he was black as opposed to John the war hero that has to bring up that he was a POW. Oh I didn't need to say that we've already heard it a hundred times, maybe more.
Oh also sometimes he didn't have a chair and other times he didn't have a chair or a table!
Annoyed guess again Lettermans show is also taped.it's not LIVE been there done that. Why don't you go back and look at the Gramm Leach Bliley act 1999 signed by Bill Clinton which was the start of all this. How about 2005 When John McCain spoke on the Senate floor and told them this was going to happen and that oversight was needed? But the bill he was supporting to do that was voted down.He was in his DC office at 2 am this morning get the facts.Lost You have never heard his speech "they will try to scare you, they will say he has a funny sounding name, they will say he doesn't look like the pictures on the dollar bills, bythe way hes black"Get out of the sauce McCain has never called him self a hero he does not mention being a POW.that is done by others never him.The first time he ever told his story publicly was at the convention. Chair Table what is that about,he was beaten, drugged had bones broken and left to mend on their own.As I said get your head out of the sauce cause you just made a fool of yourself
Nitemare: I will answer your sarcasm with some sarcasm of my own.
You DO realize that when these shows are taped, they are taped LIVE? Ever hear of something called real life? It happens every day. Sometimes there are cameras there to record this so call "real life". When that happens, it is being recorded LIVE. The same time they are recording the Letterman show, Couric was recording her primetime interview with McCain. That kind of technology just escapes you, doesn't it?
Now, the rest of what you said is just babble and so incredibly wrong I don't know where to begin. Considering I don't have the time right now to address ALL of your inaccuracies, I'll just take the most obvious. You say McCain does not mention being a POW.....not until the RNC? The ignorance of that statement makes me wonder why I'm wasting my time replying......so I guess I'll stop.
Who's the one who's making a fool of themselves?
I Agree Annoyed. McLame mentioned POW like Rudy mentioned 911.........constantly.
Just watched this on the today show who is replaying this.
Gotta agree with David on all his points.
There are no time outs in politics.
I can understand that McCain needs to rally the republicans to support the bail out, but to suspend campaigning and yet have every surrogate of his out there, while he is doing cooking shows, the Clinton Global Initiative, interviews with Katie Coric really does smell of politics and not bipartisan leadership.
The republicans should do a vote of no confidence and put Romney in his place.
Right, when some major crisis happens is he going to just make the time out sign? This was a poorly thought out gamble and he ended up looking like an amateur. Do you really want a chief executive that has no patience and when faced with actually doing some work just skips his obligation or goes all-in when he doesn't have a good hand to play? No one is buying the bluff.
PNB, there are no time outs in politics...not if your a democrat, The Dems never do anything for the good of the Country and unfortunately thats why we are in the perdicament were in, If they could just see beyond the party lines and start working instead of plotting maybe they would get alot more accomplished
If my memory serves me correctly the republicans have been the ones in charge for the last 8 years and have done nothing for the good of the county other then drive us into this mess we are in and give tax breaks to the rich. Seems a little unfair that the middle class pays more taxes then warren buffet.
How is the deregulation working out now?
Beverly:
It's time to log off and hit the history books if, as you say, Democrats "never do anything for the good of the Country."
Could you just say something that resembles fact, for once?
Re: #10.2 Beverly H
The democrats are a lessor of two evils. They cave into republican pressures too often to be completely effective. The thing is, what they try to do is mostly focused on the people, not the big corporations who own the corporation of the republican party.
If I had my druthers, we'd be done with the democrats and republicans alike. They both suck the air out of the room and leave us with green house gas.
Could you just say something that resembles fact, for once?
Wawhaw WahawWahhh Ha Ha Hah! Who do you think she is, a damn Democrat?
My mistake!
That's OK, we can always hope that their tumors will be healed by some miracle.
Add to deregulation, 100 year unnecessary war, that cost 5 mill. a month and the possibility of another war or 2 more wars with Russia and Iran.
The republicans should do a vote of no confidence and put Romney in his place.
Romney is too busy. McCain wants to put him, Warren Buffet and Michael Bloomberg in charge of distributing the Wall Street bailout.
Beverly facts Read the Gramm Leach Bliley bill signed in to law in 1999 by Bill Clinton. It is one of the biggest reasons we are in this mess.Who has been in charge the past 2 years.Who is the house finance chairman,Who is the Senate finance committee chairman.
How much good has the Democrats done Blikilgore?Lets Vietnam war JFK LBJ, Clinton White water,Monica,Jennifer and who else The Cole,Somula, Carter killer rabbits and American hostages Don't make it sound like you are with out fault.
Barb:
The war in Iraq costs us 10 billion a month.
Nightmare your writing skills make it hard for me to know what you are saying. I got that you are attributing a bunch of crap to just the dems. I don't know if you are aware but legislation in this country is proposed and passed by two parties.
I am without fault. I have never voted for a democratic presidential candidate, and I don't happen to hold a seat in either house of congress.
The only fault I feel is sitting around like a helpless sheep while George Bush has raped this country and made our freedoms disappear because we are scared.
Thanks for the input, though.
Blu don't bother to correct poor misguided Bev, what the hell is the difference between 5 and 10 billion!!
God you Dems are always so sticky on details!!
Lost:
I was responding to Barb.
Didn't want to leave another detail, unanswered.
HEY FISHFART GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT
Well Elise:
Why don't you be specific and tone down the name calling.
Read the Gramm Leach Bliley bill signed in to law in 1999 by Bill Clinton. It is one of the biggest reasons we are in this mess.
So what you are saying is the architect of the legislation which started the ball rolling to the disaster we have now was Phil Gramm. You remember Phil. John McCain's chief economic adviser who just a month ago told America they were a bunch of whiners and that the recession was all in their heads. The Phil Gramm who shaped John McCain's quarter century support for deregulation. The Phil Gramm whose wife got a cushy (an imo overpaid) job in the banking industry just days after her husband destroyed Glass-Steagall which had protected the banking industry since the 1930s?
Wow. It sounds like you are right on the money about who is responsible.
There are things about constantly receiving information that irritate me to no end. However, I do appreciate that it often exposes people for who they truly are. I'm glad he got caught.
On the funny side, the McCain`s new campaign song? From about the same era? From YouTube!
Blowing off Letterman's show and then lying personally to Dave was one incredibly stooooopid thing to do! If you're running for national office there are two groups you never make angry, the press and late night comics.
If you're running for national office there are two groups you never make angry, the press and late night comics.
I know I will be Tivoing Dave tonight.
You're right. The amazing part of the story left unsaid:
If McCain called Letterman and said "Sorry Dave, I need to cancel to concentrate on the economic crisis. I also need to attend to an interview with your CBS colleague Katie Curic, and address the Clinton Global Initiative meeting tomorrow. Could I take a rain check and come back next week?"
Letterman would have spent the entire show praising McCain and this whole issue would be moot.
Instead, McCain lied, again. Seems not telling the truth is the modus operandus of this campaign.
I supposed Katie Couric was being mena when she pressed "gorgeous" Sarah for 1 example of John's 26 years of regulating things!!!
Who does she think she is asking a question like that!!
HEY LOST IN SPACE LOOK AT OLE JOE BIDENS REMARKS YEA THATS A GENIUS FOR YOU
Elise:
Who let you out of your cell, and gave you internet access?
What a joke. Letterman? He ought to rank high on any politicians scale right now. There are probably a few more important things to do then visit with Dave right now.
Yeah like go on Rachael Ray!!!!! Are you for real you have no problem with McCain's action???
Besides the point is not that he didn't do Letterman's show, it's that he LIED about it!
He said he would return to Washington on Thursday.
No, No he didn't. He said he was flying back immediately. Read the @!$%#ing article.
That's not what he told Letterman. He lied to him.
Yeah, I guess going on the Rachel Ray show would be important thing to do rather then work on the ecomony...with msames record we don't want him "working" on the economy.. He's done enough damage ;Keating 5, deregulations , women's rights he never heard of such a thing....shame on you mcshame, still trying to get back at the females in your life......
pathetic excuse for a politician.....................that's pretty low!
I know you people can't really be that dumb.Letterman used you Rachelle Rays show is TAPED all shows are done Mondayfor the week,The segment on Katies show was also taped at 11 am you are the ones spreading lies.Find out the damn facts before you spread you hate
Letterman has done a lot for McCain. McCain appeared on the show several times because McCain is more comfortable in a homey, sit around and talk format than he is making speeches to larger audiences. Letterman likely is smarting from the knife buried deep in his back.
NIGHTMARE - YES YES THEY CAN BE THAT DUMB
I stayed up and watched it. It was hysterically funny. I haven't laughed so much at a Letterman program since, well, a very long time.
Dave skewered McCain deftly and often. And when Olbermann came out and kind of basically shut up and let Dave take over, you could see that Olbermann was just busting a gut inside but was holding it in. Imagine! Olbermann letting someone ELSE take center stage.
Can you imagine how Dave felt when they told him at a commercial break that McCain was just a few blocks away with Katie doing an interview? Wow. I'm surprised the hairpiece didn't melt.
Hysterical. Funniest thing I've seen in a long time.

How can anyone in their right mind vote for an obsessive liar for president? Unreal and the excuses, lame...however, such incidents do expose him for who he truly is. Senior Chairman of Banking, Chris Dodd said on tv yesterday of McMain, while it was nice of McCain to make such gesture, none of them have heard from McCain, however, Barack Obama has been calling them more than once a day and McCain has yet to even make one phone call. Obviously he must have more important things on his mind than contacting the Senior Chairman of Banking even once.
How can anyone in their right mind vote for an obsessive liar for president?
One got voted in twice.
And Regan was canonized. Perhaps because he was artful in his lies.
And Regan was canonized. Perhaps because he was artful in his lies.
Turned out he was a much better actor as president then he ever was in the movies. A lot of people believed him, though I did and still do think he was a terrible president.
And a terrible actor. Well a mediocre actor at best. I mean,
Wr--ong McCain was in contact with the President, and so he canceled his campaign to assist the President in getting this thing passed, Barack was talking to Paulson and speaker Nancy. You must remember that the Reps. in the house would not listen to V.P. Channey. Some people handle things by e-mail and phone. Others need to show up.
Barb-303683: "Wr--ong McCain was in contact with the President, and so he canceled his campaign to assist the President in getting this thing passed"
The Congress is working on the proposal - remember they enact legislation proposed by eh administration - so McCain really needed to be talking to his fellow Senators and the Representatives, not the guy who wants to give a $700,000,000,000 check (unrestricted by any oversight!) to Paulson and Wall Street.
KOJACK - HOW CAN ANYONE VOTE FOR A MUSLIM TERRORIST GO FIGURE OR A SOCIALIST WITH A RADICAL WIFE THEY HAVE HIDDEN UNTIL THE ELECTION IS OVER
ELISE U need to stop spewing HATE and LIES U really need to check your facts. You are sounding very bitter...afraid the right candidate will get in the White House and take this country in the right direction? (altho it probably will take more than his yrs in the white House) Haven't u had enough of the lies that has been fed to us for the past 8yrs?? WAKE UP!! Obama '08
I see elise has put on a freshly pressed white sheet.
RADICAL? But being the first DUDE of a state you want withdrawn from the Union is fundamental and basic, right? Hhhaahaha....you guys just keep cracking me up. We've already had a prez for 8 years that belongs more on Comedy Central than an oval office. He is the poster child of stupidity; stupidification for you loyal followers. And now McFly/Failin, is so eagerly awaiting to fill that position. Sarah....thanks, but no thanks! We've had enough of being lied to and talked down to; and btw, what IS her "good guys/bad guys" approach anyway? Is that really how she plans to address the nation and the world? I'm sure she is used to talking to Todd that way and her five children, but for real, America has been insulted enough for nearly 8 years.
And please take your "I support Single Mothers" buttons off. Seriously! I know you were wearing them to support Bristol being pregnant and all, but get real already! You support RICH single mothers.....because when I was busting my arse to go to college, work part time and be a single mom to my baby, you were the ones snubbing your noses when I pulled out food stamps at the grocery store or cashed my welfare check to pay rent. So please, stop perpetrating. It was funny for a while but now it's just tired and played out.
Now before you lash out.....keep in mind- I kept my baby.... I didn't have an abortion! ;)
Another Political move by McCain to try and play it safe? McCain leadership has been so shady, from the untruthful ads which he has sanctioned even though we know they are lies from numerous sources so we don't know any more when he is being honest or not. I am just fed up with being treated like a toy by McCain. I don't feel he is being genuine in this effort as he did say there would be a Joint Statement, If so why are you talking before that Joint Statement is being released????????WHY?????? It tell me that you have another plan. You should have waited for the statement and then come out and say in addition I will be............etc etc. I would have had more respect for him and trusted him more if he had done things this way. The plan was being crafted and was in advanced stages with a few points to iron out. McCain is gonna claim its because he went to Washington that why it was passed..YEAH RIGHT. It would be passed without his presence people, they have been working at it, you just dont bring five points to the table and WAH LA problem solved. THINK ON THESE THINGS
McCain doesn't care about the rest of Americans who are penny pinching cuz he's married to a millionaire...seriously would any of us really care either? This is a publicity stunt and Dave was right, let Palin debate with Obama since she is so fit to run America...she should be able to handle it.
ROFL @ your comment!!!! CORRECT!!!! He married into the money like most WOMEN do!!! LOL He's the ELITEST!!!! Doesn't even know how many homes or cars they own!!! He's a joke!!! I bet your average American can tell you how many APARTMENTS, HOMES & CARS they own!!!!
GBROWN AND TRIKI NIKKI JEALOUS - GET A JOB
Here is the link if you already haven't seen it.
Well, apparently Johny-boy can run but he sure can't hide:)
Nice display of "leadership" skills too, wouldn't you say? LOL
The press is going to have a field day with this and, they should regardless of whether or not certain people want to tag them as "liberal." This was a flat-out lie and he flat-out got caught.
Truly a new low of lows, even for a Republican!!!
Something smells.
ITS YOU
If he cancelled with Letterman to go to Washington for the crisis, what is he doing in New York with Katie Couric?
I was thinking about that.
My feeling is that he was scared to go on Letterman because he knew Dave would rip him a new one. It's clear that McCain uses women to boost him and that is my answer for this.
This is just more of the same America last John McCain first actions that this country has seen him consistently engage in. His financial missteps go all the back to Keating Savings and Loan scandal and McCain's pivotal role in creating the last great financial disaster. He likes to be involved in creating major financial messes for this country and then in claiming the economy is not his strong suite so people should hold him accountable.
Fgicukn brilliant!
