Letterman raps no-show McCain

Memo to the McCain campaign: Don’t blow off David Letterman.

The “Late Show” host lit into Republican presidential nominee John McCain Wednesday after Sen. McCain canceled his appearance on the show, telling Letterman he was suspending his campaign to go to Washington to deal with the nation’s financial crisis.

McCain spokeswoman Nicole Wallace said Thursday that the campaign “felt this wasn't a night for comedy.”

Letterman initially called McCain “an honest-to-God hero” and several times during his opening comments expressed his admiration for McCain. Recounting McCain’s years in a North Vietnamese prison camp, he said, “That’s why we love this man.”

But Letterman also criticized McCain for suspending his campaign, saying that while he’s in Washington, his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, should continue campaigning.

“I’m more than a little disappointed by this behavior,” Letterman said. “We’re suspending the campaign. Suspending it because there’s an economic crisis, or because the poll numbers are sliding?

“This doesn’t smell right,” Letterman continued. “Because this is not the way a tested hero behaves. I think someone's put something in his Metamucil.”

Later in the show, while talking with substitute guest Keith Olbermann of MSNBC’s “Countdown,” Letterman learned that instead of rushing to Washington, McCain was only five blocks away in Manhattan, preparing for an interview with Katie Couric. As his show displayed video feed of McCain with Couric, Letterman exclaimed: “He doesn’t seem to be racing to the airport, does he? Hey, John, I got a question! You need a ride to the airport?”

McCain has been a favorite guest of Letterman’s, making 12 appearances over the years. Last year, the senator from Arizona announced his candidacy for president on “Late Show.” At the end of his rant, Letterman wondered aloud if McCain would ever come back again.

“Not after the drubbing you just gave him,” quipped band leader Paul Shaffer.

Letterman has engaged in some famous feuds over the years, including one of 16 years’ duration with Oprah Winfrey and another with rival late-night host Jay Leno. He has also sparred with Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly. Letterman is often self-deprecating, but he does not like being dismissed.

“We’re in sorry need and short supply of actual heroes like John McCain,” Letterman said early in his show. “But when you call up at the last minute and cancel a show … This is not the John McCain I know, by God. It makes me believe something is going haywire with the campaign. Someone got to him and said, ‘Blow Letterman off, he’s a lightweight.’ ”

But on TODAY, McCain spokeswoman Wallace said, “We deeply regret offending Mr. Letterman, but our candidate's priority at this moment is to focus on this crisis.”

McCain lied about something as simple as not being able to appear on a late night talk show...what else is he lying or has lied about - hmm?

If David Lettermen didn't have such an ego he would have called McCain when he heard that he was going to DC and got the first interview when he got back. I'm sure there was more to the story than what Dave told. Made good press and was a great opportunity to try and help his buddy Obama. Grow Up! I'm more concerned about my money than I am David Lettermen getting his ego bruised.

NK - this is not about Letterman's ego. This is about truth and respect.

When McCain was scheduled to appear on Letterman, he was on another show. He said that he was "rushing" off to Washington and didn't actually leave until the following morning.

If it is so easy to lie about simple things, how easy will it be to lie about bigger things?

This is the concern. This is what we've lived with for 8 years now!!

If John McCain can't be trusted to tell the truth on something like a late night talk show, why should we trust him to run the country? The answer is "WE SHOULDN'T"!!!!

See, it's all okay while it doesn't direct effect YOU. But if McCain becomes president and there is an issue that MATTERS to you and he deems that it doesn't want to handle it RIGHT NOW and abruptly goes into another direction -- because he deems that direction/decision is more important to him. You will NOT be telling people to "get over it." You will be very upset.

Look at how this man is acting. Don't believe for ONE second that this type of behavior will change if he becomes President. Know that THIS is what to expect if he's voted in. You should beware!

How did he lie? He decided it was better for our country that he go to help fix the economy than appear on a show late at night. Isn't this a good example of his priorities? He is willing to put his campaign on hold to do what is best for our country. People need to grow up, get some brains and start thinking about what is best for us as a country instead of whatever they hell they want to do. Another example, McCain is going to miss a debate to work on the economy. Now which would you rather have, two people arguing about something or a stable and working economy?

So lets talk about priorities...NOW he wants to work on the economy, but why? Because his stocks and other investment may be in jeopardy? Where was he when the Average American was eperiencing difficulties, difficulties from which he is normally SHIELDED from? He get his Healthcare, gratis, Thank You American taxpayers. He has his 7 homes, good for him, Mine was just foreclosed...$1,500 on SSi didn't cut it...but to suspend campaigning due to something beyond his control? As an Arizonan, he hasn't been very active or present for Senate work for the past year, so what's he going to do? Pull out a magic wand, maybe?

Straight Talk Express? It's more like the Zig-Zag Express, what ever is convenient at the time...AND is there ANY guarantee that all our taxmoney will ensure a stable economy? As a Disabled Veteran, I would like a Golden Parachute just like those fatcats who are getting off scott-free. White Man speaking with Forked Tongue..(again)

Nate1980 - the lie was "rushing off to Washington". That's not what he did. When he was scheduled to appear on Letterman, he was talking with Katie.

"Mr. Letterman" is just a comedian. That is all! What is Mr. McCain and Mr. Obama getting paid for doing? They need to do their jobs at this important time. It seems Mr. McCain is going to do just that. I do agree with Nate1980, it is much more important for them to do the job they were elected to do. LET'S GET THIS ECONOMY BACK ON TRACK AND HEALTHY AGAIN. We can blame it on Bush, but remember CEO's were only looking out for themselves and buyers and lenders were not be responsible for their spending and lending. They are the ones that should suffer. Not the hard working responsible Americans to pay for their mistakes.

He's not on any of the committee's that even pertain to this matter.

Now, he's gonna save us, by suspending his campaign so he can avoid Friday's debate.

And Obama has voted what, 'Present, and accepting payment for same' how many times?

They are still Senators you know, and one of them will be after the election.

Another tv or movie wannabe God/godess heard from and crying about how they were treated, boo hoo "Im a star and he canceled on me". When will these people realize that the world does not revolve around them ? This whole group of people should charter a plane for this soonest flight they can getto what ever other country might put up with their whine.

Oh but you're wrong Ry,wv, millions of viewers revolve around television personalities. And these same viewers follow their lead and you are sadly mistaken if you don't believe this.

And obama has cast how many? Remember, he won't be able to vote present(135 times) if he becomes president. he will have to take a side.

This is the only hero that Letterman knows? Well, I know thousands of heroes, including my own two sons in the military. He should be careful who he admires. There are thousands of former POWs who deserve just as much admiration.

Let's see - should McCain appear on Letterman's late show OR try and help with the economy's big mess? A no brainer for me - what's up with you Letterman? Since you are already rich, I guess you don't much care about the rest of the country - only about ratings and numbers.

Scenario: McCain chooses to appear on David Letterman the day that the financial crisis comes to a head.
Result: Obama camp decries McCain for appearing on a comedy show during crisis, claims that he is "out of touch" and doesn't care about economy because he owns 10 homes and 11 cars.

Scenario 2: Well we are seeing it. It's lose-lose for McCain.

According to Michael Moore most of a Senator's time is spent campaigning. In a time of crisis do we need someone to do their job which will have immediate impact or do we forget the crisis and undermine a solution to have a debate in which they will talk about how the other candidate is stalling the process.

Do your jobs please. Just because you are candidates doesn't make you lame-duck senators. It is not fair Sen. Obama that you deprive me a Chicagoan of representation in the Senate and a say by proxy in this financial solution.

Letterman needs to get over himself. He is so full of himself that he cant see past the end of his own nose. He is not funny and not important. Who cares what he has to say.

John McCain made the right choice and should never return to see Letterman.

This is about John McCain lying!! He lied when he said that he had to cancel one appointment only to appear on another show at the same time of the first show. Instead of showing true integrity or character and saying "I have to cancel because I have a conflict in my calendar, he LIED and said that he was "rushing off" to Washington when he didn't actually leave until the following morning.

What Letterman was mad about was that John McCain called him and told him he wouldn't be able to make his show because he was going to Washington and then goes to Katie Couric which is recorded at the same time. So Letterman said if you cancel my show to go to Washington shouldn't you be on a plane instead of the CBS studio? I guess it's not Country first. It's me first with John McCain. McCain didn't even leave for Washington until this morning. Go figure!

That is exactly what the point is with Letterman. McCain should have came clean, and stated, "With what is going on at the present time, I do not think I should be on a comedy show." That's all, finished, end of story.
