Obama, McCain debate amid financial crisis

advertisement

Republican John McCain agreed to attend the first presidential debate Friday night even though Congress doesn't have a bailout deal, reversing an earlier decision to delay the event until Washington had taken action to address the crisis.

With less than 10 hours until the debate was scheduled to start, the McCain campaign announced that the Arizona senator would travel to the University of Mississippi. The campaign said that afterward McCain would return to Washington to continue working on the financial crisis.

Obama had always planned to attend the debate and was aboard his plane preparing to take off when McCain's announcement was made. McCain quickly moved to his own private aircraft and headed South with his wife and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and his wife, Judith, on board.

The action contradicted the position McCain had taken Wednesday, when he announced, "I'm directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the Commission on Presidential Debates to delay Friday night's debate until we have taken action to address this crisis."

McCain had also said he would suspend all campaign activities, but in reality the campaign just shifted to Washington while the work of trying to win the election went on.

McCain had taken a gamble with the move, trying to appear above politics and as a leader on an issue that had overshadowed the presidential campaign and given him trouble. But Democratic rival Barack Obama had not bowed to McCain's challenge, and instead questioned why the Republican nominee couldn't handle two things at once — the debate and involvement in the bailout negotiations.

An Associated Press-Knowledge Networks poll out Friday just before McCain's announcement showed the public overwhelmingly wanted the candidates to debate, 60 percent to 22 percent, with the rest undecided.

By Friday morning, it appeared McCain was looking for a face-saving way to get to the debate even though a deal had not been reached. He met with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, before heading to his campaign headquarters and issuing a statement that blamed others in Washington for the failure to reach an agreement.

"John McCain's decision to suspend his campaign was made in the hopes that politics could be set aside to address our economic crisis," the statement said. "In response, Americans saw a familiar spectacle in Washington. At a moment of crisis that threatened the economic security of American families, Washington played the blame game rather than work together to find a solution that would avert a collapse of financial markets without squandering hundreds of billions of taxpayers' money to bail out bankers and brokers who bet their fortunes on unsafe lending practices."

Just before McCain's announcement, Obama told reporters that he had spent Friday morning on the phone with Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and congressional leaders and he was optimistic that progress was being made toward a bailout deal.

"At this point, my strong sense is that the best thing that I can do, rather than to inject presidential politics into these delicate negotiations, is to go down to Mississippi and explain to the American people what is going on and my vision for leading the country over the next four years," Obama told reporters aboard his campaign plane as they prepared to travel to Mississippi.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a McCain supporter, said the Republican made a "huge mistake" by even discussing canceling the debate.

"You can't just say, 'World, stop for a moment. I'm going to cancel everything,'" Huckabee told reporters Thursday night in Alabama before attending a benefit for the University of Mobile. He said it's more important for voters to hear from the presidential candidates than for them to huddle with fellow senators in Washington.

Both McCain and Obama had returned to Washington on Thursday at the urging of President Bush, who invited them to a meeting with congressional leaders at the White House. But a session aimed at showing unity in resolving the financial crisis broke up with conflicts in plain view.

McCain's campaign said the meeting "devolved into a contentious shouting match" and implied Obama was at fault — on a day when McCain said he was putting politics aside to focus on the nation's financial problems.

Democrats differed, saying the refusal of McCain and other Republicans to support the plan worked out by congressional negotiators was creating a road block.

"The insertion of presidential politics has not been helpful," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Friday.

When asked whether the meeting was a mistake, Obama replied, "I'm not sure it was as productive as it could have been. I think at this point it's important to just move forward."

It is a nasty world. I believe McCain acted in good faith and the Democrats are using his decision to go work on the bail out package to smear him. First, the Democrats have the votes in both houses to pass the bailout bill. So why don't they just pass it? They do not need the Republicans vote. They just want Republicans to sign on so they will not get blamed as the bill is evidently problematic the way it is currently written (for example - 20% of something - which is evidently a lot of money - going to the organization ACORN which is a political organization - Democratic at that I believe.) The Democrats told the media a deal had been reached when it had not. The Democrats knew the Republicans would not sign the way the bill was currently written. Then when the meeting occurred with President Bush, McCain, Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Frank, etc., President Bush deferred to the Democrats and they deferred to Obama to lead the meeting thinking it would be good for Obama and his presidential campaign. Obama used poor communication skills, that is, used language that sounded like an attack on the Republicans, probably as a result of Obama not having the information he should have, that is, not understanding the issues, and the meeting broke down and ended in a shouting match. The Democrats are now trying to spin all this as McCain's fault. It is disgusting. This is not a free world. John McCain made a decision to do something - go to assist on the bail out bill as he felt it was important - he did not tell Obama what to do - however, the Democrats attacked McCain for his decision and this attack is ugly. They basically did not like McCain's decision to participate and therefore went after him.

As the presidential election moves forward, I find myself get angrier. I can't believe that there are 28% of Americans who still think that George Bush is doing a good job. That is just friggin unbelievable to me..

I can't believe that 40% of Americans think that Sarah Palin would be a good president. Based on what?? How is she going to reform Washington when she doesn't even understand how Washington works.

I can't believe that MCCain is doing so well even though he has lied, misinformed, gimmicked, pandered, and bullsh*tted us throughout his campaign. He has no plans for the future, no agenda, no progressive ideas, no nothing. All he has is a catchy slogan, "Country First", (which is another lie), and a misguided notion that he can "change" Washington into a responsible, non-partisan community. We all know that ain't nevah gonna happen!!

And I really can't believe that people in this country still hold on to the us-versus-them attitude. It does us no good. We are a diverse country, we always have been and we always will be. We will never reach our potential as a nation if we spend so much of our time fighting against what we are.

Obama isn't the savior. Not by any mean. He could have used a little more experience, though experience might not be all that its cracked up to be (see George W. Bush). But at least he has vision. And if it turns out that we are as wrong about Obama as so many of you were wrong about Bush, then I trust that we will vote him out of office at the next opportunity.

I think we are at a crossroad as a nation. Don't you? We can either try to move forward or allow our fears to hold us back.

It is time for us to grow up.

Did you guys read my comment? The Democrats have enough votes in both houses to pass the bail out plan. They are afraid to take the responsibility. The Republicans never agreed to the bail out plan but it dosn't really matter - the Democrats have the votes to pass it. There was never a deal. It is all about nasty politics. I can hear the anger, bitterness, meanness, and so on in these comments. Why did the Democrats get so upset that McCain decided to go to DC to work on the bail out? He did not tell them what to do but they did attack him for his decision. What if the house Republican plan is best for the economy and the nation? What if the Republican plan is the better plan?

I know it sounds insulting, but I have a hard time believing McCain at any given moment knows what day it is. Last night on NBC News, Brian Williams asked him a question. Like every Republican I've ever heard, he skirted around the question, the end result no answer. Brian also asked Obama, he gave what any normal English speaking person would understand as a acceptable answer. That's all I ask, answer the question you are being asked, McCain/Palin can't do that. I know John McCain's history, I respect that, but it's tiring to hear him fall back on being a POW to answer questions he has no idea of how to give a reasonable answer.

rk41979 - your comment sounds like a thug and a bully. Instead of name calling try making an intelligent comment. As far as multitasking - there is a time to do that and a time to focus fully at the problem at hand. Business executives, managers, supervisors, and individuals, clear their schedules and focus the majority of their attention and resources on issues/problems that are viewed as high priority/extremely problematic. After the high priority issue has been resolved they go on to deal with the less important issues.

Mccain lied again. Said he would not show if a deal does not get done, lied about Palin's earmarks, lied about the economy, lied about his campaign manager not taking money from Fannie Mae. Mccain is walking on our heads and there are still those who have footprints on their faces and looking up at Mccain with a smile on their face saying "Your the man!". Karen,

First do the Dems have the vote to pass the new bill yes they do, they even have up to 40 Republicans that were with them on it. The issue still stands why is it ok for the Republicans to allow the next great depression?

The idea you talk about was a last minute thing that even took others by sup rise in their own party. It was ideas on a single sheet of paper with no explanation of how it would work. One of the ideas was to deregulate even more businesses so they would buy into the failed companies. Do you really think that is a good idea? Deregulation is what got us in this mess, at least part of it, the other part is the Dems fault. But why is it McCain was asking for the bailout that was the Republican plan at first there is now a 2nd Republican plan. McCain can't even get his own party to work together that is how bad he is at governing.

McCain pulled a stunt saying he was going to suspend his campaign again he made a promise no debate till there was a deal but he has backed out of that promise too like so many others that he has in the past. He made a bluff and Obama showing leadership and strength called him on his bluff.

rk41979 - it is probably not worth responding to you but I am a small business owner and have been for twenty years. I have many times worked 7 days a week - 10 to 16 hours per day for years. I have lost money and I have made money. I used some of my money to help my sister who has health problems and I helped pay my niece's college bill as her parents could not afford it. I have worked in numerous companies helping to solve problems and get them back on track - so yes I do know first hand about prioritizing. Also, I was never handed anything. I did it myself. I went to college at night while working and paid for it myself. At one time I even belonged to the Steel Workers Union.

Sarabizz, I'm not a fan of the past 8 years either, but I still have the intelligence to know that I want my president to just tighten the reigns a little bit on regulation, enough to where our don't-like-saving, greedy American ways can't buy houses with ARM's that we can't afford, and maintains the correct approach that it's not about more regulation, but proper regulation.

And by the way, mam - YOU ARE CRAZY! Obama's answers ARE REGURGITATED BS!!! They go like this....

-Obama hears the question
-Obama pauses
-Obama starts off by saying something to the effect of "Well let me just start by saying..."
-Obama then goes off on a tangent for 8 minutes that MIGHT be relevent to the question, but doesn't answer the question
-8 min later Obama answers the question in a manor that does not define a specific position.

I think Sarah Palin will bring a lot to the table for the McCain ticket relating to social and fiscal conservatives, Clinton supporters, voters supportive of fiscal conservatism, capitalism not socialism (Joe Biden), drilling for oil, etc. One thing I do find interesting is that Obama supporters are bashing McCain for having 20+ years experience while simultaneously bashing Sarah Palin for having none. I think the two candidates balance each other out and I think that was the idea to bring to the table.

JNC1234 - you've pegged this perfectly! This guy is real good at seeming like he's saying something substantial but when its all said and done he ends up managing to fool every different special interest group into believing he's actually agreed with all their different points of view.

He's loves Jesus and voted for partial birth abortion

He loves America but doesn't want his daughters to grow up in the America that he loves

He's for Gays but against Gay marriage

He's an ex Cocaine user but support decriminalizing Marijuana

He's ethnically diverse but for 20 years goes to an ethnocentric church that supports Black Muslims who hate Jews and has a pastor who still thinks White people are the slave masters children

He's a senator who is close friends with a known radical bomber

Obama is a classic enigmna wrapped up in an enigma , Its impossible to be all things to all people and be for real.

Kool Aid, Kool Aid taste great but some of these Obama supporters need to put down the bongs and drink a tall glass of milk to take off the edge to help them get that glazed looked and silly grin off their faces!

Read through every single liberal, Obama supporting comment on this topic and others. Have we changed one mind? You are beating your head up against the wall, and for what? I've not seen a single comment where a mind has been changed. Obama can DO NO WRONG!! If he did what McCain did yesterday these very same people would have fallen all over themselves, fainting, and crying out, "What leadership!", "How dare republicans question his motives." etc.

Oh yeah, I'm excited about the debate tonight. Obama is an excellent orator when he's reading from the telepromptor, but McCain has years of debate experience on the junior senator of 3 years. Get prepared to hear Obama's repeated "Ummm's" tonight as he tries to dance around a substantive answer. Kinda makes me giggle if it wasn't so damned infuriating that some people view his charade as genious.

Let me see, McCain out debates Obama on the economy... it would go like this..

McCain, where do you stand on the bailout... McCain: (depends, on Mondays I'm for it and on Tuesdays I'm against it. Wed to Sun you can think what you want)

McCain, what was your input at the meeting... McCain: (I just wanted to be sure to stand in for the people)

McCain, is our economy fundamentally strong... McCain: (it is and it isn't)

McCain, WTF are you doing here?... McCain: (Idk, I tried to get out of it like I did David Letterman, but of course the stupid media wouldn't leave me along)

Man, I agree with the anti-McCain viewpoint, but I think the language being used doesn't make us look very good. Let's try to emulate our candidate and stay cool, okay? Karen's entitled to her opinion, no matter where she gets her information, and everyone else is entitled to disagree, and back up and source their own info.

I know we have 7.9 years of pent-up frustration. There's nothing worse than seeing a train wreck coming and not being able to do anything about it, and this administration has been all that and a bag of chips. That doesn't give anyone the right to say some of the things that have been said in this thread.

      Karen,

Before you judge the Democrats on taking responsibility, you need to look to the party that elected the most irresponsible president ever. He does not even let anyone in his administration take responsibility. He waits for a crisis (at a convenient time.... one month before elections) to say there is a SERIOUS problem and then wants to rush a bill.

No doubt there will be another one. Oh wait his time is almost up. 01-20-09 Freedom will ring for America.

Yeah Dragonwoman, an economic crisis right before the election is wonderfully convenient timing!?!?!? All of these banks/financial institutions orchestrated their demise to perfectly coincide with the election just so that GWB can could in and save the day. Everybody's out to getcha aren't they democrats? If democrats don't win then there has got to be some way those sneaky, underhanded republicans took the win from us. Nevermind that the polls are almost neck and neck, and for as many people think the way you do, there's almost that same number that share my conservative views. This has been proven in poll after poll. We've been almost 50/50 since Clinton.

I can't believe our society has sunken to the point that we are crucifying an elected official for not appearing on a second-rate late-night talk show. He cancelled on Letterman and instead was on a news program instead? So what? I'd be pissed if he WAS on Letterman with the things that are going on in Washington.

Another thing I find crazy is that so many people complained and cried foul when McCain made a decision to possibly not attend the debate. Now that he's going to attend the debate they are crying even more. And you accuse McCain of flip-flopping!?!?! Do you want him to attend or not???

As far as the gentleman accusing Karen of being a job-less gold-digger...do you have no integrity? What kind of person would make such an attack based purely on a difference in party affiliation? And beyond that, you didn't even make a good point. Yes...business leaders DO cancel meetings all the time to focus on important matters. While a debate is important it's STILL just talking.

This debate at a time where Americans have been wondering for months about the financial situation of our country, is very important. One it gives us a chance to choose economic platforms and two it shows which candidate is current with the situation.

I own a business and as part of the majority of businesses in the USA. we delegate our appointments to others. If I had a major contract pending and another business was knocking on the same door, this is my priority. As with McCain the American people are the consumer, and he wants them to hire him so he best show up and give his proposal. Union talks and pay could wait till after he is elected.

This is the American way and McCain has to be involved with his clients, though a senator as his colleagues said of McCain coming to DC for this crisis, thanks but you are not needed till we vote next week on the Bail out plan .

Both Obama and McCain attended this White house meeting after their initial inputs, and briefings they did all they could do till the vote is casted.
A two hour debate isnt going to interfere with this.

I wonder if Palin will be watching the debates from Alaska,

        Joe? Joe who"

...oh excuse me, you mean Obama's #2, oh yea that guy, the one who thought Roosevelt went on TV when the stock market crashed in 1929

Joe who? Oh you mean the one that admitted that Hillary would've been a better choice than himself?

No wonder we're talking about Sarah so much, no wonder we're so obsessed with Sarah Palin, going through her life with a fine tooth comb, calling this very accomplished totally liberated woman everything from disabled to ditzy, for that you Dems get a D for dense.

We're talking about Sarah Palin and you're scared of her because she actually matters and she's only #2 on the ticket.... and just as capable as Hillary to go up against the #1 on the Dems ticket. Thats why you folks have to stoop to the desperate level of comparing O bumbler's Community activist experience against her's as a mayor and a governor. Thats why we'rew talking about Sarah.....

while Joe, well ask any Black or Hispanic kid "what's the name of Obama's running mate, 8 out of 10 will say huh?

When you say Joe, they'll say "who?"

His last name might as well be Bloe

        Now whats that about Sarah?

Oh yea ...the state she governs used to belong to Russia. Some Obama supporter don't even know that. Some of them don't even know Black people live in Alaska too!

People just don't have nothing better to do than to let the media poke at Obama's speaking, his coolness, him taking the time to gather information before he reacts out of impulse, when McCain is the one running around like a chicken with his head cut off. Making threats to not debate. Not taking a stance on a critical issue (which is one of his biggest messages against Obama, go figure?), Not understanding economics, staying silent on the issue to the point his own party is furious at him. Palin has been looking like an airhead to the public. Then people point the finger at the reporters for asking her a valid question about her foreign experience, actually giving her the floor to come back strong from her original stupid statement of seeing Russia from her window.

So Darisbell, Pahleeeeaase, give me a break. It's not Obama's fault the world is used to hearing thoughtless, inarticulate rhetoric speeches from Bush and McCain.

When you have a full thought about critical issues, I would rather have a President that can articulate an answer rather than crack mindless jokes like McCain does.

You truly have a dizzying intellect! I said that we've been 50/50 since Clinton, which WAS in the 90's. Name specific situations where he has suggested 9/11 as cause of the problems in his administration. With Google and such, finding this information shouldn't be difficult seeing as how he's used it as an excuse soooooooo frequently. Your brain should be full to the brim of examples to cite. I'll be watching the debate and will eagerly await your responses in the upcoming days.

Obama got schooled? Why because McCain name dropped. He thrashed McCain on Iraq, called him out on critical issues: McCain was wrong about Afghanistan, Russia, China, he didn't know Spain was a NATO ally, Obama called him on his wrong judgments on the economy being strong, and his poor character singing bomb, bomb, bomb Iran. McCain did nothing more than tourist talk of all the places he's been. But his views, policy and ideas were wrong and he got called on it. McCain also got schooled on no preconditions, but prepared comments.

                McCain also got flustered.

Yeah, I'm sure that McCain is terribly intimidated by the far less experienced senator. Gosh, Obama must have been the most formidable opponent he has ever faced!! This experience of the showdown with Obama may well trigger nightmares for years to come for John McCain. McCain looked like he wanted to interject an opinion about half truths Obama was spouting, but he never appeared unnerved to me. Obama became visibly unhinged on several occasions and I liked seeing him get called out on it.

What world leaders has Obama met with in his brief 3'ish years as a senator? You wouldn't have the unmitigated gall enough to suggest that a senator of three years would have more experience as commander in chief of the US Military than a senator of almost 30 years PLUS a strong military background.

And his strong military background included crashing 5 planes and coming in #5 from the bottom of his graduating class. Wow, gosh, I really believe that scares Obama.

                    "crashing 5 planes" FAIL

You are just another person spewing lies.

                    Straight from FactCheck.org

"McCain did lose two Navy aircraft while piloting them, both due to engine failure. A third was destroyed on the deck of the carrier USS Forrestal when hit by a missile fired accidentally from another plane, triggering a disastrous fire that killed 134 sailors and nearly killed McCain. A fourth plane was lost when he was shot down over North Vietnam on a bombing mission over Hanoi. There's no evidence that any of the four destroyed planes were lost to pilot error.

A fifth alleged "crash" turns out to be a misinterpretation of a biographer's description of a flight accident that did not result in the loss of the aircraft."

I'm not making this up at all. This is what just happened, isn't it:

-- McCain patriotically "suspends" his campaign and heads to Washington because his country needs his leadership at the financial negotiations.
-- McCain states that he would not debate until a deal is reached.
-- In Washington, McCain continues his politicking activites but makes virtually no contribution to the financial negotiations except to throw a monkey wrench into the deal-making just as a deal is ready to close.
-- McCain then reverses his position and decides to go ahead and participate in the debate anyway, even though no deal was ever reached.

Huh? What was THAT all about?

I sincerely think McCain has been behaving a bit strange lately. I mean, he's always had that creepy smile that suddenly flashes from nowhere and then instantly vanishes with no apparent reason--but I'm not talking about that. What I mean is that, lately, he just seems like he's depressed or preoccupied with something else, or maybe it's just that he's got too many things on his mind. I don't know what it is exactly, but he definitely hasn't been looking as healthy as he used to.

Partisan politics at the brink of collapse. Shame on both parties.

Didn't wall street and the people who couldn't read a mortgage contract do enough gambling for all of us?

This is a matter of leadership and integrity, McCain has none, Obama still has to prove his. Both parties behind them are without souls.

McCain is counting on a simple majority of Americans, in a few key states, being as stupid as a bag of hammers.

Obama is counting on the anger and frustration of every finger pointing blame game playing, victim mentality, malcontented grumbling complainer.

Basically everyone who blames their failures on someone else.

Of course that makes sense.... afterall thats how he and Michelle were able to become the successful people they are .....right?

Obviously they made it to the top by blaming other people for keeping them down! Oh wait a minute theres a contradiction in there somewhere can you help me find it...I'm dumb as a hammer. :-)

                          - Yes Charles every one of the net 600,000 who lost their jobs have themselves to blame.
                          - Everyone of us is to blame for our banks failing and our stocks and retirement accounts tanking and good luck to those who had deposits they cant currently get.
                          - We are to blame for our weak dollar that has fallen below the Canadian after years of being at least 1.2 times before the last 7 years and higher than the Euro (hence our overall devalued country).
                          - Yes we are to blame for thie war in Iraq where we are spending 10 billion a month building someone else's country that had nothing to do with us, nor attacked us or could feasibly do so, while they mount a surplus.
                          - It is our fault that we now have trillions in deficit which we and mostly our children will have to pay off when we had a surplus just 7 years ago.
                          - We are to blame to our high energy prices (because we were stupid enough not to put republicans in control for 6 of the last 7 years at the legislative level and all of the last 7 at the executive level).

I guess we are just whiners and complainers. And those of us who keep voting these useless leaders in or presenting 894 out of 899 in their class candidates need not apologise but simply return every 4 years to blogs and push the same kinds of candidates and policies. Your job loss comment brings up a point: it makes you wonder which is more risky - working for yourself where you could be broke but atleast you'd be in control of you being broke, or working for someone else where your job position could be at the mercy of your employer's bad mistakes.

I say - Obama is the classic useless leader. A real down and dirty politician who first got into office by running an uncontested contest by getting his opponent disqualified by proving his opponent's signatures were invalid...did you know that?

                          Thats politics .....Chicago style

Obama supporters need to wipe off the Kool aid grin and seriously ask themselves... "when has Obama ever done anything for working class or rural Americans or for that matter even Hispanics?" The dude is very urban minded and ethnocentric thats why anything he has actually voted for reflects just that and not this illusion of himself he's dupped you into believing.

Its called smoke and mirrors.. if I do bad it doesn't count.. if I do good you all get the idea...spin to win.. Some say we are at a cross roads.. I feel like its a dead end.
However I believe one road is leading to Argentina and bankco.....son't want to go there.. one is leading to war and war and spend and spend for the military industrail .. you know.. its complex...but we have to fight cause that is what one was trained to do.
so everyone who thinks we should play around .......watch more kids go without and old men posture for glory and country ..stop and listen and realize the president of the united states is speaking.. and one listens too.. which one do you want.. Easy answers or the plain truth .. which may take a minute cause like the man said.. 'we can not stand the truth" we take it better with sugar.

I have not heard many people even ask ,, Why why why or who what where and esp when.. but ok bush said it .. it must be so....(nevermind) I can tell you from here in Hope looks like those Asians don't trust our wall street anymore than we do... but for sure it isn't one for you an one for me anymore, as I see it from Hope on the path has so much more merit.
As for thinking that national security and the economy are separate ,,hey isn't this the future, oh yea, this is the future we all talked about last year peace out

Charles, I will take the um's of Obama to the made up, overly used, prov en wrong, stump speech that McSame used. That whole bit on the veterans. I only wish Obama had nailed him on it the way he nailed him on all the areas he was wrong on Iraq. And that was the only place Mc D Student could stay..... Iraq and "the surge". He was even wrong on Gen. Petraius claiming victory in Iraq. We are no where near Victory. He fails to grasp that the Middle east is a vast region. He fails to see that the countries surrounding and even further away (Philippines) harbor small fractions. And since he can't grasp concepts like email and the internet (only takes credit for the blackberrie), he can not grasp how easy communication is for the small groups.

Actually, Mr. fowl-language-user, here's what happened with this McCain suspending election issue.

Day 1: DEMOCRATS call out saying John McCain's vote would be essential to it getting passed as the fiscal conservative republicans in congress were against the type of action posed in the bill.

Day 2: John McCain says he's suspending his campaign to go to Washington to help get the bill passed through.

Day 2b: The DEMOCRATS freak out thinking they shouldn't have called John McCain out like that because it could make their good buddy Barack Obama look really bad, so they try to cover their tracks by saying things like "We don't need McCain to come down here here, why is he coming back.....what a hail mary!" Talk about fickle.

Day 3: Everyone debates the debate and whether he (McCain) should have gone back to Washington and why he went back.

Day 4: I write this and suggest that we should just wait and see how all of this (the bill and the debate) plays out.

Day 1: McCain hasn't read the 3-page proposal yet.
Day 2: McCain decides to suspend his campaign and go to Washington. He hasn't read the 3-page proposal yet. No debates! Country First!
Day 3: Obama has called his bluff. McCain sits at a table posing for camera crews wondering if he made the right decision. Would someone notice if he changed his mind?
Day 4: McCain ends the 'suspension' of his campaign. We notice he changed his mind.

                                  usa1 -

That is a really good point and I would venture to say that McCain is obviously bringing much needed public attention (and subsequently, pressure) to Washington during this time while he's in the mix and, there are a lot of conservative republicans that are against this type of intervention from gov't and have come up with there own plan, so that is probably complicating things.

                                  TREVOR -

Then you should ask yourself why YOUR DEMOCRATS even made the comment in the first place that his vote was significant to a bill getting pushed through. Wait, I'll tell you why.........

It goes back to my response to usa1's comment: because the republicans are generally against gov't intervention of this kind and the democrats don't want to be known as the only party pushing this bill. They want John McCain to rally the party to pass it as well so if things go sour, he and the republicans would take some blame as well.

You gotta keep in mind that congress is up for election too, genius.

McCain blew it. Obama was looking like a complete jackass putting the debate ahead of saving the country from possible economic ruin. The debate couldn't wait a few days? This shows exactly why this clown should be sent packing on election day. Imagine him standing alone at the podium answering questions as to why he's here instead of in Washington helping to solve the financial crisis. Could it be that he just cant resist a photo op or because his economic expertise consists of being able to balance his checkbook. McCain should of stuck to the high road.

Anyone who still supports McCain as adamantly as Pete G does is not a thinking person. These staunch Republicans are the people who think McCain can do no wrong however "IF" McCain were to be in office and send Pete G's job overseas while raising his taxes, I wonder if Pete G would support that too? Why would people think that John McCain who has stated that he is not at all strong on economic issues, support his abandoning a debate so that he can run to Washington to help with this economic crisis? Republican supporters can try to claim he is putting the country ahead of the debate but the fact is McCain couldn't possibly add any value to the situation. If anything he would be wasting every ones time and money(especaily the 5 million the U of MS put out for the debate) to go and sit in DC? And Pete G is saying McCain went to Washington to save our country from economic ruin? That makes absolutely no dam sense! The weakest person on economic issues ran to Washington to help save our economy? That's really asinine!

So you believe you are a truth teller. Umm. I read your post and I just get a feel that you are angry and mean-spirited. Also, when I read your post I hear you repeating sound bites. First, the USA has the second highest corporate taxes in the world. They also have more regulations which increases their costs of doing business as well as the wages are higher in the US compared to other countries. US companies can no longer be competitive in the world market (and it is a world market - it will never go back to anything otherwise). If taxes are increased on corporations, small businesses, etc. the costs will affect everyone down the line. For example, you may pay lower taxes but corporations - businesses may lay off people, lessen the benefits, reduce raises for their products and services, etc. Also, Obama knows he can not raise taxes in this economic environment as it will push it further in recession. Economists of all parties agree with that. I believe McCain is honorable, grounded and has the experience to lead our country. I do not feel Obama has the track record (good decision making - actual accomplishments) to be president. I also think Obama will lead the country toward socialism which I do not agree with.

First Bush is not running - It is McCain. Personally I think Obama is very similar to Jimmy Carter but I do not continually reference Carter - instead I talk specially about Obama. Therefore, it is not logical to keep referring to Bush. McCain does not even like Bush. Anyway, moving on - the bail out plan needs to be written in a way that prevents financial crisis which would affect people like us - that is I do not want my 401K savings value significantly decreased nor my equity in my home. I think the Republican goal is prevent the financial crisis but not increase government. The Democrats want to write the bill to increase the federal government. I do not want the government controlling my life. They are inefficient and dysfunctional. I believe Obama is trying to move the country towards socialism. Also, Obama wants to give $50 Billion to the United Nations to help with poverty. Experts state that what would happen is that middle class Americans would have less money and that money would go to make a few corrupt individuals in other countries wealthy.

Let's get back to the basics. Obama has no real experience, yet McCain does. In most other professions, the person with experience gets the job. My vote is for McCain. I am afraid of Obama as I fear he is too wet behind the ears. His followers can't even find his huge, prominent office in my hometown - they constantly ask me for directions when the office is 1/2 block away. Now that really scares me. How are they missing the Obama red and blue flags all over the street screaming the office's location? Open your eyes, for God's sakes.

McCain blew it when he first decided to cancel the debate. I as an American want to hear what happened and what will be done to fix this problem, the debate would help by giving Americans a chance to decide who would be better to fix this problem.
McCain most of all needed this debate, his campaign adviser Phil Graham calling Americans whiners a few weeks ago because of this issue, McCain a week ago and til last Friday saying the economy is fundamentally sound. McCain really needs to explain to the American people why this revelation that he now realizes the economy is tanking and why he didn't realize this earlier. Instead McCain tried to hide in the White house with his friend Bush and assuming the normal Bush Bunker mentality. As a President or even a normal human McCain should be able to multi task, McCain really proved his new colors this last week. I say new not true because this is not the same McCain we all knew.

What has Mccain experienced in? Seriously, oh wait I know DEREGULATION, denying benefits to the military, and I will not go on with the list because it is long. Pure and simple his egotistical stunt has cost America much. YOU OPEN YOUR EYES. Mccain even lied to Dave Letterman. The man is not worth my vote or anyone elses. Some people will vote the party but it will not matter. It will be the same 5 bloggers for Mccain I see on here daily and reply to every post with a one lined nonsensical statement. It was the Clintons and Liberals!! Give me a break.

If McCain does not even like Bush then why, pray tell would he vote with him such a high percentage of the time. Apparently, based on your conclusions he also does not really like the troops or he wouldn't have voted against them so much. Your 401K and the equity in your home has already been decreased substantially and if this government does not step in to exert some control of those who have abused the deregulation of the "free market", you may never get back what you have already lost.

No matter how you neocons spin this, the fact is, John's little stunt didn't work

Somehow showing backbone and a desire to do a job you're getting paid for like being a senator is a bad thing for Obama supporters and no wonder why.
As Senator Obama hasn't done squat to earn the pay grade he's at now and curiously none of his supporter give a hoot. So why would any of them be impressed with someone who actually works? Answer: They wouldn't, they more into Obama's relation to Brad Pitt

and now he has to tuck tail and get his white wrinkled keester down to Mississippi.

Its amazing how the the so called Party of the Tolerant are being exposed as Liberal hypocritics through their blatant disdain for older Americans

What will he try to pull next to get his little toy poodle from debating with Biden?

Its even more amazing how the the so called Party of the Tolerant are being exposed as Liberal hypocritics through their blatant disdain for a woman who is a virtual icon for the gains of Women's Lib

He had no business going to Washington except to LOOK presidential, and all he did was come out looking like the fool he is.

Unlike Ba Rock Star UhBumbler McCain is accustomed to actually meeting his responsibilties of doing the job he's paid to do. He's enduring the hype of the political campaign and not glorying in revelry of a Nationwide Concert Tour like the Ba Rocker

                                        Country first, MY ASS!

Exactly what Ba Rocker said "Country first, MY ASS!" forget that nonsense I just want to win!!!

Besides that his biggest motivation was when Michelle said "you cancel that debate I'll slap you silly"

pddoc and Obama supporters in general love to use deregulation against McCain.....

buddy, in 2005, the bill that was proposed that would have re-regulated Fannie and Freddie was voted for by every republican and against by every democrat.

                                        Bottom line....

LETS NOT GET CAUGHT UP IN SAYING WHO WAS AT FAULT. ITS ABOUT WHO CAN GET US OUT AND THAT IS JOHN MCCAIN.

We were all at fault, from the banks who approved these loans, to the people who bought them with ARM's thinking they could just re-finance in a couple years because their house's value "had to go up", to both parties in gov't who didn't do anything about it sooner. And NO you can't just blaim one party.

Not a dang gone thing but run for office! Most of his career has been spent running for office.

His greatest asset has not been his ability to lead or anything substantial thats he's accomplished

Nope....His greatest asset his been his charismatic ability to woo voters and win elections. He's the quintisential politican packaged to sale like Ivory Soap and Kelloggs Corn Flakes.

Anyone with a lick of sense can tell what he really thinks by some of the things he's said, what he's done and who he associates with.

Thats why he'll never get the vote from those typical white woman, like his grandmother living in small town America who are bitter and clinging to religion and guns.

What a character ...those kinds of comments are not only above his pay grade but should also be beneath the dignity of any person with any form of self respect!

I sincerely hope this demonstrates that McCain and his campaign have finally realized that WE AREN'T STUPID ENOUGH to believe that this was anything more than a stunt.

Scuramondo has the gist of it, McCain SAID NOTHING, DID NOTHING, CONTRIBUTED NOTHING to the process THAT HE HAS NEVER EVEN READ THE DETAILS ABOUT.

And if he had skipped the debate, he might as well skip the election because he was HIDING NOTHING by his stunt.

WAKE UP!!! The Republicans really, really want you to trust them one more time by saying "Honest, we won't govern like Republicans anymore if you just give us another 4 years to do it all again".

McCain - The Drama King. Along with his Drama Queen, Sarah, they make much ado about nothing (at least nothing they haven't previously created somehow).

Anybody see him in the news clips rushing in to a building with Joe Lieberman? They were acting like they were rushing to a fire while all the negotiation was going on elsewhere. The "urgency" was probably a trip to the rest room. Age, prostate problems and all...

Meanwhile, Obama looks like the calm and collected statesman.

Whenever he is in an informal setting, without cards or a teleprompter, he stutters quite a bit. Or uses the "uhmm" word.I can only hope for him, he has been getting help with this issue. He would come off a bit more intellectual without the stuttering. It is very distracting from anything he is trying to say. I literally want to pull the words out of his mouth for him - and I would rather he not win! Yet I still want to help.

And you DO understand that McCain never claimed to have invented the Blackberry? One of his advisors said,"Telecommunications of the United States, the premiere innovation in the past 15 years, comes right through the Commerce Committee. So you're looking at the miracle that John McCain helped create"

He is a HARVARD graduate and at the TOP of his class. He is not stuttering, he's THINKING and delivering articulate messages.

I'd rather have a President who thinks than one who acts like McCain has over the course of his campaign. If you really want to engage in a discussion then lets talk, fact for fact, who has been the head and who has been the ass.

I think after the success of the Democratic convention in Denver the McCain campaign decided they can't win on the issues. It was evident during the the GOP convention that they were going to run on personalities and avoid issues at all cost.

This latest attempt to avoid the issues, to suggest skipping one of the few debates scheduled this election year is not fooling most voters. The McCain campaign advisers realize that if he would have skipped tonight's debate which I think is about foreign policy (supposedly his strong point) it would have been disastrous.

With all the posturing Obama has done over the last few days, he had better come prepared for tonights debate. If he continues to sound like a stuttering version of Martin Luther King he will lose any credibility he may have had. I want answers not retoric. I want real solutions not pie in the sky crap.

Even if McCain wins the election and manages to completely decimate the country, Republicans will defend their decision to the grave. "At least we don't have that inexperienced, secret muslim, socialist, elitest, terrorist called Obama Hussein in office." That's all they've been saying all campaign, and honestly that's all they have left.

It was on display again yesterday when he said, with that phony aw shucks grin of his, that it'd be "up to others to judge how much my presence helped". Of course that was just before his presence caused the whole deal to fall apart. He's a buffoon.

I'm really not sure what McCain was up to by this off the cuff behavior. If he wanted a little more knowledge on how to appear presidential and say presidential things, couldn't it have been done without running to Washington? Or maybe they fitted him with one of those ear pieces that Bush wears so he can hear how to answer a question beyond his intellect. Who knows... I do know one thing though, McCain is a man who acts on impulse and can change his mind on a multitude of things in the blink of an eye. If that doesn't concern the average voter, they better think again.

                                                            Karen,
Check your facts. First, though Democrats have the majority they have it by 1 or 2 seats only - since there are always dissenters on each side, nothing is ever solely passed with just one sides votes - and Rep's have enough people to fillibuster. Second - this is YOUR Republican presidents plan! Your republican house and senate are now throwing your Republican president and his plan under the bus.
McCain and Obama are in the senate - the Plan is not on the floor being debated- it is in a commitee who hashes it out and brings it to the floor for a vote. McCain and Obama's only job is to vote yes or no - neither one of them is president yet - they are senators - and McCain has overstepped, as well as stepped on Bush's plan. It was nothing short of a political ploy to make himself look presidential. Country first I think not. It was a gimmick. Had they wanted there plan debated - they should have brought it to the table at the beginning of the week instead of waiting to ambush the plan after it was all but settled. And By the way - until McCain dropped this bomb - they DID have the VOTE on BOTH SIDES.

I'm surprised that all you dems are upset about McCain changing his mind, I would think that you would be used to it. Obama's favorite phrase is "what I meant to say" and he has no backbone, voting present over a HUNDRED times. Obama didn't want to go to Washington and actually have to vote on something and be held accountable. Multi-tasking? How about prioritizing? That's what McCain did, he prioritized!!!

Sure he prioritized... and now that the leaders have told him in no uncertain terms that his presence in the middle of what they're trying to accomplish is useless, that's he contributes absolutely nothing, and that basically his "would be presidential antics" are in the way of progress, he has rethought his prioritization, and will debate Senator Obama tonight. Wow, I for one am impressed!
