Russia: Arms sales to Venezuela are defensive

— Russia's foreign minister says the country's arms sales to Venezuela are meant for defensive purposes.

Russia has stepped up ties with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and is sending a naval squadron to Venezuela for exercises next month in a show of force near the United States. Russia has sold Venezuela weapons worth more than $4 billion since 2005 and announced a $1 billion credit for arms purchases last month.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke Tuesday after a meeting in Moscow with Venezuela's foreign minister.

Lavrov also told a state-run newspaper that Russia and Venezuela have no plans to attack anybody, suggesting a joint attack on the United States was "unimaginable."

That's a fact. Both of them put together don't have the firepower, nor the manpower.

Plus the whole being vaporized thing is probably a turn-off as well.

Some  people  say  that  this  post  may  have  been  prophetic, which  is  why  I  am posting  it again  five  years  later. The  post voiced  my  uneasiness  with the  post-Berlin Wall  world  and the  accusations  that  the  U.S.  was  "seeking hegemony, while  friendship  between  former  allies  was  at  its  lowest." What  was "prophetic  in  my  post  was  not  just what  happened in  the  five  years  that  followed ... but  the  insertion  of  the  "Bull  Moose"! Was I  propheseeing  about  Mrs. Palin  winning  the  lections? The  time  will tell! Here  is  the  post:

    Hegemony or not, I
feel great uneasiness. The Berlin Wall was better. It kept alliances
solidified, cemented! Today, jackals like Russia and Germany have the
floor. They know the game, historically. The fall of the Wall of Friendship
between the Allies is worse than the fall of the Berlin Wall! It spells out
uncertain future for the world. It threatens the Catholic Church, although
the Church, historically, has survived all calamities. The shackals, France
included, seem determined to force America to defend her "power." I knew it
from the first day: it never was about Saddam! It's about the New World
Order, in reverse! America never thought it will play out like that. But
Russians know how to play chess! Will the American Bull Moose stand up and
chase the jackals away, or will it concede defeat? Even the Pope has ruled
out fighting!  But, all said, let God prevail! 2/11/2003 2:18:36 PM (Nathanael)
