COLUMBUS — Barack Obama is playing it safe. Leading in polls with 25 days to Election Day, the Democratic nominee is offering careful proposals to address the economic crisis while letting allies respond to John McCain's sharpest charges.
Obama now reads his speeches from teleprompters, reducing the chance of gaffes. He has not held a press conference in two weeks, although he has done several one-on-one interviews with national and local reporters.
He now refers to Republican John McCain as "my opponent" more often than by name. And he offers carefully limited, comparatively non-controversial remedies for the nation's financial crisis.
Publicly, Obama's aides say he keeps a calm demeanor and measured tone because he doesn't want to fuel the anguish and panic caused by the economic meltdown. Privately, they acknowledge there is no desire to shake up a campaign dynamic that is inching him closer to the White House.
"I don't like to yell," Obama told more than 10,000 people in Columbus on Friday, his fifth large rally in hotly contested Ohio in two days. He was referring to a sound-system glitch, but it could have been a metaphor for his home-stretch strategy.
"He's responding just right, and the polls are reflecting it," said Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, who campaigned with Obama this week and helped lead the counterattacks against McCain. When GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin spoke in Ohio on Thursday, Brown said, she spent too much time on issues such as Obama's ties to Vietnam War-era radical William Ayers, now a college professor in Chicago.
"People are saying, 'What about our jobs, what about the banking situation?'" Brown said.
On Friday as McCain rolled out a new TV ad with his sharpest language yet about Ayers, the sharpest Democratic response came from Obama's running mate, Joe Biden, who told an audience in Springfield, Mo., that McCain is trying to "take the lowest road to the highest office in America."
Obama is seeking a careful balance these days. He criticizes details of McCain's chief economic proposals, and he briefly and broadly disputes Republican attacks on his character, not getting into details. That seems to satisfy Democratic stalwarts who feel recent nominees were too slow to respond to character attacks.
Obama devotes more time to explaining his own long-standing proposals for tax cuts and energy investments. On Friday, he added a temporary program of tax breaks, low-interest government and government-backed private loans for small businesses having trouble borrowing to meet payrolls, maintain inventories or expand.
When this careful rhetoric threatened to bore crowds seeking rhetorical fireworks and when the economic problems turned into a crisis, he added more upbeat lines to his stump speech.
"Now is not the time for fear," Obama said at every Ohio stop this week. "Now is the time for resolve and steady leadership."
Unless asked, he does not mention McCain's and Palin's fiercest line of attack: that he has associated with Ayers, a former 1960s radical who helped found the violent Weather Underground.
Increasingly, high-profile supporters take the sharper jabs at McCain before Obama comes on stage. On a sunny street with a few thousand people in Chillicothe, Ohio, on Friday, Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland played the part.
"The McCain-Palin campaign and some of their followers unfortunately want you to be afraid of Barack Obama," he said, adding that "others" have spread untruths about the nominee.
Obama does not leave all the heavy lifting to surrogates. Referring to McCain and Palin, he told the Chillicothe audience, "it's not hard to rile up a crowd by stoking anger and division." He said Americans want "someone who can lead this country" in a time of economic crisis, not divide it.
Noting that McCain advisers have said their candidate will lose if the campaign's focus stays on the economy, Obama said: "So in the last couple of days, we've seen a barrage of nasty insinuations and attacks, and I'm sure we'll see much more over the next 25 days. We know what's coming. ... But it won't work."
Obama is playing it safe on policy, too, avoiding the far-reaching proposals that have caused McCain headaches. McCain's call this week for the government to buy bad home-loan mortgages at full face value and renegotiate them at a reduced price set off loud protests from conservatives and liberals alike.
Obama's proposals have been more limited. His proposal Friday to temporarily extend an expiring tax break that lets small businesses immediately write off investments would cover only investments up to $250,000. It would cost the Treasury $900 million, Obama aides said.
Good move for Obama, maintaing an even strain while McCain lurches about screaming senselessly over a domestic terrorist who hobnobs more with Republicans than Democrats, and Palin does her beauty pageant-Evita wave at the angry mobs as they scream "Kill him!"
I don't necessarily think he's a Muslim but no Christian would've sat in Wright's church for 20 years and said nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Zero about Wright's anti-Semitic, anti-American, anti-white rhetoric.
Oh golly-gee, whiz, I betcha you don't wanna know about how Sarah Palin's church preaches hatred for Jews.
Marie, why not? Many members of my family are Assembly of God Christians, and they sit in church pews week after week, year after year listening to all kinds of hatred against non-christians and yes, all kinds of racist remarks - veiled and overt.
Good Christians weigh what they hear and reject things that are not christian. Wright made one speech years ago that Obama was not even there. Do you not think the smear people would not be running more of his sermons if there were more. I do not condone what he said in that sermon but I understand the statement after I took the time to obtain a copy of it. He should have put will in it.
In the south preachers for years promoted slavery. Today they still condone racism. The catholic church preaches that they are the only true church and anyone that is not baptised in their church is condemned to eternal damnation. The problem is not with Wright or Southern racist churches or even catholic churches it is with organized religion in any form. My Family and myself pray at home on Sunday. We do not attend any church. Going to church does not inflluence you for better it influences you to the will of the preacher!
For years now Obama has aspired to better things and has a good christian upbringing by his grandmother in Hawaii. To think he would go to a church that was contraversial and racist is insane. He is half white raised in part by his grandmother who is 100% white. Makes no sense.
John McCain still would be running around with Hagee and Parsley if there were no videos available of their comments and they were good friends with McCain before his run for the election. McCain knew where these men stood on some issues and the only reason why he denounced him because they were exposed.
Obama on Rev. Wright
"I cannot prevent him from making these remarks," but "when I say I find these comments appalling, I mean it. It contradicts what I'm about and who I am. ... It is completely opposed to what I stand for and where I want to take this country."
>Robert Kennedy Jr. speaking to the kind of person Palin is:
Governor Palin's Reading List
by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. / posted 9.15. 2008/ Huffingtonpost.com
Fascist writer Westbrook Pegler, an avowed racist WHO SARAH PALIN APPROVINGLY QUOTED IN HER ACCEPTANCE SPEECH for the moral superiority of small town values, expressed his fervent hope about my father, Robert F. Kennedy, as he contemplated his own run for the presidency in 1965, that "some white patriot of the Southern tier will spatter his spoonful of brains in public premises before the snow flies." It might be worth asking Governor Palin for a tally of the other favorites from her reading list. " ( No doubt Sarah Palin is also familiar with Pegler's attitudes toward those "Jewish commie geese". )
Sarah Palin is the result of McCain's lack of vetting her - and he still stands by this. Most disturbing.
Sarah Palin's reply:
nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Zero. Oh yeah, she doesn't talk to the REAL press. She doesn't answer questions even during debates unless she wants to.
Susan Eisenhower's opinion:
By Ryan J. Donmoyer / Bloomberg.com
...Susan Eisenhower wrote that a coalition of Democrats, Republicans and young voters can deliver Obama a victory that would ``assure the world and Americans that this great nation's impulses are still free, open, fair, and broad-minded.'']
To have such a prominent Republican break ranks is a sobering message. Just ask George Will and others, the reality of whose running is revealing itself more and more as each day passes. McCain has no positive sense of direction to offer the country.
Try being black and growing up during the country's most racist, discrimmatory times, do you think all that is said will be good. I served in the Air Force for 25 years and earned the right to critize this country for what I believe is wrong with this country. I am not voting for Obama because he is black, I'm voting for him because he is the right person for the office at this time. Have you listen to the people at the McCain/Palin rallies during the past week? What is different about them and different about Rev. Wright?
Does John McCain go to church???- it seems the republican agenda is extremely conservative- that is not to add to which all republicans are not under a fundamental religious political strategy, nor should they be discriminated against for being republican- however "prolife" definitley seems to be the moral issue (more so than institutionalized execution or factory breeding animals for a food source marketed to the public).
Again the question is: does John McCain represent a moral majority and is he a man of devote faith- or is he using the republican party and playing political games? Does John McCain go to church, how often, where, with who?????????
I don't know if he goes to church, but he sure loves a fellow human being to death.
John McCain once claimed to be Episcopalian. Then (I think during the 2000 elections) he claimed, in front of a southern crowd, that he was Baptist. Lately he's been pretending to be Catholic by putting himself in front of images of Mary in order to court the large Hispanic population.
Just like everything else in his life, he changes so much you can't pin him down. I don't think he has any actual beliefs or principles.
Who cares where he goes to church? McCain walks the walk, as opposed to BO who blocked the bill which would prevent abortionists from allowing babies to die after being born alive. This man is no Christian; the Christian believes in self-worth, self-reliance, and that charity comes individually. This guy is a Communist because he believes that the Government has to take care of your health care, your investments, and make sure that people with no means of support can get mortgages to buy houses. Remember, he is #2 (after Christopher Dodd) in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac contributions.
Jesus was a communist too. Oh, and you should check McCain's record on abortion. He's come right out and said he does not beleive in overturning Roe v. Wade. Good luck trying to turn McCain into a conservative...lol.
The historian above just visited one of those web sites that has the baby being born alive story that was refuted and debunked long ago.
TheHistorian Are you a christian? Cause you don't sound like one. Unless you are the Rush Limbaugh kind. Being a christian is not just about being against abortion. That is not the-end- all-be-all-of-Christianity. Christians I know believe in the truth of Holy Bible.
Since when does "walking the walk" mean spreading lies, distortions, and fomenting hatred for your fellow man. Jesus Christ never walked like that.
Oh, and would you find any verses in the Bible that encourage : "self worth, self-reliance, and "that charity comes individually"? Whatever that means.
Gag me with a SPOON! is what this article has done. Obama is "famous for his unscripted oratory" my nether regions! This guy is famous for his gaffes from 57 states to abortion "being above my pay grade". When he is let loose without a teleprompter he shoves his foot in his mouth up to his knee. Google "Obama gaffes" and see what I mean.
This is a typical, sycophantic piece of garbage from the AP.
I hope that Strickland chokes on his words. Remember that he took his name out of contention as VEEP. Really believes in Obama, doesn't he?
If Obama plays it "safe", it will be interesting. Sooner or later, McCain or his surrogates will get him called out to defend his record and he will have no recourse.
Oh, gee-whiz, by golly, you are very scary. What do ya like most -
Sarah Palin sleeping with a terrorist or
Their political gaffs aren't very interesting: 57 states (Obama), my fellow prisoners (McCain). It really doesn't amount to more than their exhaustion on the road. I know everyone wants to make mountains out of these mole hills, but they just don't carry any weight.
I was deeply disappointed when GII won twice, but he was my president once he took office. Both McCain and Obama have repeatedly called each other worthy opponents and both have called each other out to defend their records. All be it boring, the two debates demonstrated that they can both stay on message. It's going to be a shock if one of them does something outlandish at this point. McCain will be the likely one to slip up out of desperation. I hope he doesn't go there. Instead, I hope he finds the person he was, before all of this started.
Actually Wright is no different than the masses of white Americans who claim the U.S is turnig socialist or who hate black men...or those who preach love and hate gays.
Wright also has survived years of civil rights protests and grew up in world full of hate for him and his community based on his skin color- at one point negroes were not allowed to use water fountains- is he allowed to be paranoid and have feelings of ill towards man?
Yes.
He wouldn't be human if he wasn't. Why should he have divine understanding maybe the teacher needs to learn. So go to hell to every person who needs an excues to mask their fear and project their inner hated back on its victim. And for the record, Jesus wasn't Christian he was from the mid-east. Again you ignorant unlearned hypocrites Jesus was from the mid-east. You were taught to not cast stones and love thy neighbor-
Quite the perspective and quite right.
And for the record, Jesus wasn't Christian he was from the mid-east. Again .... Jesus was from the mid-east. You were taught to not cast stones and love thy neighbor-
I worked in federal buildings (Dallas & Ft. Worth) that still have the shadows of "no blacks" water fountain signs on the wall. The whites that control those buildings still won't remove them because they say it provides historical context that shouldn't be defaced. It's truly pitiful the racism that continues under this guise. Instead of removing the offensive wall sections and putting them in a museum where they would be put in context, they still expect blacks to drink with that sort of thing staring down at them. It's typical from one of the most racist enclaves in the country.
My only wish is that this racism and backlash hatred would stop, but when people can't see the most obvious things -- well, stuff like your comment may not ever get heard, not really. It's a shame on us all.
I just read this article and got really excited and excited over the pictures as well.I then looked at these posts and got angry. Can't you guys just be happy for Barack Obama-Stop all this smearing and lies and hate, for once keep this up beat and get ready for a truly wonderful President in Barack Obama.
This time of the year you get this from the right wingnuts. Maybe I should not call them that because some are just paid to spread this junk. Usually a group of hem in concert try to thread jack the theme of the conversation. They will post the same thing multiple times log in under different names and try to overrun the conversation. it is part of the republican disinformation system. Use your ignore button
I still can't figure out why evangelicals think they are so morally above everyone else when all I see them do is display hatred and bigotry towards people different than them. I hate to tell them but they are no friend of Jesus. They will find this out when their passport to heaven is denied.
It's obvious that Obama is the more God-fearing, Christian of the 2 candidates yet they act like he is Satan's long lost cousin. McCain and his wife are living together in sin right now.
Evangelicals have proven they don't care about the works of a man, they care about the letter next to their name on the ballot. And that's it.
I went out to eat with co-workers today.&; Just as my lunch arrived and was about to take my first bite, the 2 men (and I use the word loosely) started in on politics....specifically, Barak Obama.
(I apologize for some of the words I use---They are not my own!
1. He's no American. He's Muslim. He was born in that @!$%# country Kayna (I assume he was trying to say Kenya)
2. He and all his Muslim pals are going to rape our women and we'll be nothing but muslims, arabs, jews.
3. If that @!$%# is elected we have to make sure it doesn't last.God damned socialists, @!$%#s, spics, chinks, jews and now this terrorist taking over our country?
This is the FLORIDA you wont see on the vacation brochures. Being from California, you hear that crap like this exists but until you are 2 feet away from it and hear it for yourself it does not have third party stories dont carry the same impact.
After speaking to the manager. He comp'd my meal. And I left.
My co-workers understand why........but of course they are all for McCain....based on religious convictions.I dont get it.
Religious conviction makes it okay to vote for a racist.
Allow me explain - Republicans have courted religious social conservatives and have gotten them to see morality in terms of two issues. And only two issues. Same sex marriage and anti-abortion. It is literally true, you can practise almost any other vice as long as you're anti-gay and pro-life. Not all Christians are so blindly self-righteously conservative.
God did not call us to be "two issue" Christians. "But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into Him in all things, which is the head, even Christ": Ephesians 4:15
You can see the desperation in the hateful messages being left on these boards. The more hateful the messages, the more it's obvious McCain supporters know they are losing. and why not? they hated him in 2000...suddenly they love him? lol
The up side is as they go on Obama goes up in the polls Newsweek just put him over the ten point margin
And that ten point margin is what he will need. Stanford published (no I do not have a link) a report that 6% of people polled will say they are voting for Obama, but - once they get behind the curtain on election day - will not vote for him, and instead choose McCain.
It is imperative that Obama maintain a double digit lead going into November 4th.
if your obama
its time to crack open a beer sit back..and say job well done
If you're an American.....do the same!
Job well done America. You did not give into fear, racism, bigotry and ignorance.
We have evolved!
Have a beer, but don't relax until after you have voted. DO NOT forget to vote - Nov 4.
I live on a small island......I drive by my polling place to get off it to go to work......trust me................if I dont stop someone will LOL!
I have only not voted 1 time in my life -- When Arnold Schwarzenegger became governor of my state.
I have voted since 1984. For the last 17 years, I have taken my daughter into the polling place and booth with me. She just turned 17 so she's missing this election. But she's engaged into the process and that's what counts.
pablito
I've been baffled about that for some time now. How can someone call themselves a Christian and then have their supporters pray for rain to ruin their opponents day? How does one call themselves a Christian, and not stand up against hatred and bigotry displayed right before your eyes? How can one call themselves a Christian and not hold your campaign to the same standard that you hold your opponent to? I won't lump all evangelicals together because I'm sure there are those that are outraged at this behavior, but as a movement, they need to revisit the old, "WWJD" slogan. If they would read their Bibles, they'd know that even when Jesus disagreed with people, he was never violent or spewed hate. He solved everything peacefully and in love towards mankind. From where I sit, the only love I see from McCain/Palin, is love for self and not much of anyone else.
Sad isn't it. A christian would rather lose the race than compromise his ideals. Some mask the deception by making excuses that they do not exist. Overall it is a shame that our politicians have to resort to this sort of thing.
And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. Matthew 24:5 KJV
And many are deceived today. Those who believe the lies being spewed are deceived. Yet, these same people think those very liars are 'good christians', or atleast moral and upright.
You can be sure about this: Jesus never lied, never needed to lie. Those who lie can't, can not, be His true followers.
The greatest danger of all is to allow new walls to divide us from one another.-Barack Obama
Who do created this economy?
The foundation was set way back when FDR started Fannie Mae then in 1970 when congress created Freddie Mac this started a federal dependence on all mortgages.
Next things got even worse when Carter passed the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), that compelled banks to carry at least 10% of their portfolio with bad mortgages or high-risk mortgages. But in 1995, the Act was revisited forcing banks to carry high-risk mortgages.
Clinton did a very nice job with the economy as we saw it during his presidency, but then signed another bill allowing deregulation in 1999. You probably saw banks like First Union start carrying the securities side called Wheat First Union. So they were basically taking your money you had in a savings account and gambling it in the stock market. Numerous other deregulation laws were put into place as well. During this time a community group called ACORN started to push the CRA and groups like this had almost $1 trillion in mortgages out to people that could not afford them.
We then were attacked in 9/11 due to our involvement in Bosnia and Somalia (Remember the pilot that was lit on fire running through a town in Somalia?). Later, we started war with a country whose dictator, Saddam Hussein, which John F. Kennedy put in place through the CIA. That was a disaster! Are they still looking for those WMD? Or have we realized that Bush was retaliating over the regrets of his father?
Question about the deregulation of banks was presented at least 15 times but never went far. Why did it get shot down in the Senate? Why did Fannie Mae pay off so many people with contributions to their campaign? Why did the CEO of Fannie give himself a bonus based on the number of mortgages and not the quality of mortgages? Finally, the mortgages that were given to people who could barely afford them got a little kick in increased interest to where people could not afford it and boom the bubble popped.
I hear claims of, "We are going to make sure CEOs do not give themselves a golden parachute in the future." Four of the head people for Fannie Mae are no longer working there and the law would not even affect them. You go find out where they are working. I recommend going after those that did this to our economy and put them in the poor house after they serve time in the big house. Not all of us can major in finance therefore we will probably not be experts. However, those in the banking industry do major in finance and accounting and should be honest/responsible about if we can afford a loan, not how many can they give out.
Logdump-Are you nuts !! You didn't even respond to me and if you did you totally missed my message !!! By the way I have never used another name on this site !!!
Obama/Biden 2008
Obama should not engage the down-right-ranks of the McCain and co. who are spewing deceit through a fear and smear campaign. McCain's credibility will continue to decline as long as he runs a smutty campaign while the economy crashes. Americans don't want to hear fearful things from their leaders. They've heard ENOUGH fearful things from the current fearful leader. But since McCain's a maverick, and doesn't care what others think, I expect him and his followers to continue along their chosen way, and that is on the bridge to nowhere.
Hmm.......I wonder....................if Jesus were to come down to pay us a visit......Would he encourage this bigotry and side 100% with the Repubs?
Something tells me, as a Jew, he wouldn't be welcome at a Republican event.
So the Repubs were around then, too?
McCain is insane
Palins' a (b)Witch...
McCain is insane.......Palin's a witch........Vote for the land of the free.....not the land of the rich.
Try being black and growing up during the country's most racist, discriminatory times, do you think all that is said will be good. I served in the Air Force for 25 years and earned the right to criticize this country for what I believe is wrong with this country. Have you listen to the people at the McCain/Palin rallies during the past week? What is different about them and different about Rev. Wright?
The difference between militant Islam and right-wing Christianity is style, not substance. The Muslim militants want to establish theocratic police states in Islamic countries (e.g. Iran) with bullets while Christian conservatives would do the same thing to our country with ballots, for "secular" Republicans. If the GOP,and the sectarian Middle East parties, weren't so blinded by their prejudice there would be a flood of militant immigrants from Islamic countries to our shores.Given their views on abortion, gun control .gay rights, and multiculturalism among other issues they would have made a staunch Republican constituency and the McCain crowd would feel a lot easier about this election.
Obamanites - Have you not looked at all the despicable things Obama has been involved in and continues to be involved in?
Obama is the slickest and dirtiest politician to surface in a long, long time. You say all the reports and accusations are false, contrived, and lies? Ask yourself - if all the evidence (video, audio, photos, documents) is false, then why hasn't Obama denounced them? Why hasn't the main media reported on how 'false' these reports are? Because they don't want to fan the flames of truth. Obama wants you to stay focused on the economy, not the truth. Remember 'wag the dog'?
Your mother taught you: "Where there is smoke there is fire." Why are you ignoring all the red flags? Is you hatred of the republicans so all consuming that you will dismiss the truth about Obama. Once you start overlooking the red flags in Obama's life, it's easy to buy all the lies. What U.S. - loving citizen would not honor the U.S. flag, especially when running for president? There you go, already dismissing that simple, yet fundamental, act as 'no big deal.' Well, it is a big deal. Wake up Obamanites.
Look for yourselves, see the myriad of evidence (on You Tube and all over the web) that the main media will not show you. You might be surprised at how much the media is not reporting on. The main media is keeping the truth hidden, which is a clear sign that the change Obama represents is for a socialist society where the media reports what the political machine approves, not the truth. Get informed.
