Johnston speaks about Bristol Palin, Obama, baby

WASILLA — Levi Johnston, who's having a baby with Gov. Sarah Palin's daughter, can't believe all the things he's hearing. No, he wasn't held against his will on the campaign trail. No, he's not being forced into a shotgun wedding with 17-year-old Bristol Palin.

"None of that's true," Johnston, 18, said in a rare interview with The Associated Press. "We both love each other. We both want to marry each other. And that's what we are going to do."

Standing in the driveway of his family home in this small Alaska town, Johnston spoke about the rumors swirling around him.

The soft-spoken teenager discussed his relationship with Palin and how life has changed with fatherhood fast approaching. He agreed to talk despite the presidential campaign's advice in the days following Gov. Sarah Palin's nomination to avoid the media.

"They're not telling me anything right now," Johnston said as he checked his Blackberry. "It's pretty chill."

Not surprisingly, Johnston was a little shocked when he learned about Bristol's pregnancy, but he says he quickly embraced the prospects of fatherhood. The baby is due Dec. 18. Johnston has dropped out of high school to take a job on the North Slope oil fields as an apprentice electrician.

There's no word on how his future mother-in-law feels about Johnston's decision to drop out of high school. Last year, she made a point of trying to turn around the high dropout rate in their hometown.

"I'd remind the kids that no matter where they are in life — (maybe) in circumstances that probably aren't ideal — that there is no circumstance that they're in that is insurmountable or would necessitate them just giving up," Palin said.

Johnston hinted he's expecting a boy, but he declined to discuss baby names.

"I'm looking forward to having him," he said. "I'm going to take him hunting and fishing. He'll be everywhere with me."

Johnston, a Wasilla heartthrob, said he wanted to set the record straight.

For starters, he said his much-maligned MySpace page was a joke — the one that claimed he said: "I'm a ... redneck," and "I don't want kids." Johnston said his friends created the page a few years ago and he had nothing to do with it.

Johnston said he has dated Palin since his freshman year in high school.

"We were planning on getting married a long time ago with or without the kid," he said. "That was the plan from the start."

While Johnston provided few details about next summer's wedding, the planning has started: A cousin will likely be his best man, and he has asked two hockey buddies, Ben Barber and Dane Wilson, to be groomsmen.

Barber doesn't think anyone pressured Johnston into marriage.

"If he thought it wasn't the right thing to do he probably wouldn't do it," he said.

Johnston is an avid hunter. He's dark haired, tall and muscular, sports a bit of stubble and drives a red Chevy Silverado truck. He'd be the perfect cover for Field & Stream.

He's bagged bears, sheep, elk, and caribou. Some of the antlers are scattered about his yard. Last July on a caribou hunt he lost a "promise" ring that Palin had given him. He said he decided to tattoo her name on the finger and not bother with more rings because he'd just lose them anyway.

Johnston said he wasn't forced to campaign with Palin's mother. Bristol Palin invited him and Johnston jumped at the chance. It was a whirlwind experience for Johnston, who was seated with the Palins at the Republican National Convention.

"At first, I was nervous," he said. "Then I was like, 'Whatever.'"

While Barber said his friend is a celebrity now, Johnston said it hasn't changed him.

"I'm still the same old boy," said Johnston. "I'm just a workin' man."

And now he's also about to become a family man.

"We're up for it. I'm excited to have my first kid. It's going to be a lot of hard work but we can handle it."

Wasilla hockey coach Bill Sturdevant, who was invited to the wedding, said he was sorry to hear Johnston wasn't going to return for his senior year of high school. But he said he believes Johnston, a talented hockey player, will find his way.

"He's a tough kid," Sturdevant said. "He's taking everything in stride."

What about Johnston's politics?

The young man said he wasn't an expert on politics by any stretch. Asked about Barack Obama, he replied: "I don't know anything about him. He seems like a good guy. I like him."

Johnston didn't register in time to vote, according to the Mat-Su Division of Elections Office in Wasilla. But he's still rooting for John McCain and Sarah Palin.

"I just hope she wins," he said. "She's my future mother-in-law. She better win."

If you put your mouse over the name at the bottom of the second article (the Levi "HOCKEY" JOhnston one) you will see that the actual email address is zackparsons@somethingawful.com. I looked him up and he does do humor and as seen by the piece here:  http://www.somethingawful.com/d/news/leave-message-anonymous-3.php it is sort of in the line of this second piece.

Basically, I would say that the second piece was most likely not written by Levi Johnston. Could this Zack Parsons guy have written it as a "humor" piece? Possibly.

When did the AP start writing for articles US Weekly and Teenie Magazines? lol.  A full-throated gushing review like this one seemed more like a Entertainment-section review than actual journalism. This is what the AP has become? Sad.

No, he can't change the economy.  He doesn't even understand it and neither does McCain (the fundamentals are good, the fundamentals are bad, if prez I'll fire the SEC chairman, let's start a commission to do nothing).  It's too bad things had to come to this, but that's McCain's own doing.  Now it's.. let's hand over the economy to our new republican economic imperator, Paulson, so he can nationalize our economy completely.  The order of the day, from republicans no less, is total socialism... ala McCain's "the gov't will buy up all the bad mortgages" and so and so on.   Thanks for providing the first push to deregulate everything Phil Gramm-  I hope you choke on your Texas B-B-Q.

She should at the very least refuse to give her daughter's hand in marriage to this twit unless he gets his high-school diploma. Being a candidate for the vice presidency doesn't excuse you from looking out for the best interests of your daughter, Mrs. Palin.

Imagine what Palin would do to this kid when/if he realizes he was too young to make decisions that will affect the rest of his life, and like most young people these days decided that a teenage relationship is not going to work out.

She will ruin him!, and knowing he does not have a full education, she is most likely to make sure he suffers if he decides to separate from her (Palins) daughter. In my opinion she has already thought this out, and that is why she is not strongly pushing him to finish his education, so that possibly he will struggle to succeed if he does not abid by her rulings. Wow, anything to do with Palin incites the more left wing members of newsvine pretty quickly. Kind of reminds me of Ann Coulter (the reaction people have to her, that is).

You don't have to live in her state, under her governor ship.  You may get to live in her country, you may then learn what many Alaskans now know.   Believe me it will be her country.  I will buy John a rabbit to take his first bite of food if  she becomes  VP

jphelps: I can name two that have never been found guilty, or even investigated, for ethics problems and abuse of power: Joe Biden and Barack Obama.

The sad fact is that the republican ticket this year is "ethically challenged" (McCain with Iran Contra and Keating 5 and Palin with troopgate) so I fail to see where McCain and Palin get off thinking they can engage in a character debate with folks who are way out of their league.  McCain needs to stick with thrashing the relatives of Vietnam era MIAs during Senate hearings and Palin needs to just go moose or bridge hunting.

Don't forget Obama with Alinsky and ACORN and Wright and and Pfleger and Rezco and Ayers and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Then there's Dodd with Fannie Mae and Countrywide. And don't forget Frank with Fannie Mae and Countrywide, and Rangel and his income tax issues. As the Democrats' glorious leader would say, it's a culture of corruption.

Insinuations aside, the Republican ticket has been investigated, and it has been proven that they have crossed the line of ethics in politics. McCain was censured, and Palin...well we all know what the panel said on Friday. As for Dodd, Frank, and Rangel they are not running for president or VP so they are not the issue here. The issue is that the Republicans on the ticket have used their power unethically, and that is not who I want running our country.

I will point out that sitting on a bipartisan board to reform education with a man that was part of an extremist group when Obama was 8 does not make him at all responsible for Ayers actions. Rev. Wright served America in the armed forced, and spoke of a feelings that many minorities feel is alive in our country today. While you might not agree with him, racism is alive against whites, blacks, and all minorities. If you listen to his entire sermon you would see what that is about. Obama was never charged with anything with the others you mentioned so...I don't really see your point. and let me remind you that McCain's top economic adviser was being paid by Freddy Mac until about a month ago.

                            Sorry to go off topic.

I happen to think that ANY kid, regardless of race or religion should not leave school before graduating due to a pregnancy.    Out of the entire story, I find this the most frightening.  There is little reason this kid can't at least get his HS diploma.

I'm with SDG, he has a chevy silverado, a blackberry, calls his future child, 'the kid' and said "whatever" to all the events surrounding him.   Sorry, but I know a lot of teens that could have phrased their future as Palin's son in law and the potential birth of their child in such a way as to seem mature and articulate, at least partially educated.

I'm wondering why he is 18 and has not finished HS?  The article states he won't finish his senior year.   I graduated HS at 17, most kids I know graduate between 17-18.    Why so late for this kid?

I agree, it is a shame he will not finish school.  Perhaps he just turned 18.  He may have missed the cut off when entering the first grade.  He may still graduate at 18.  Don't know for sure but that may be the reason.  He has no excuse not to finish.  The Palin's could likely assist on the residuals alone from Sarah's rimless glasses or the Sarah doll.

Thinking over the second article, it is probably a hoax, I think kids of that age finishing high school would have a better knowledge of government.

He was born May 3, 1990.  If he kept going to school, he would be 19 when he graduated.  Anyone born in May starts school the September they are 5.  Meaning Levi is already one year behind - he stayed back a year.

Happy, he could have missed the cutoff for kindergarten by days.  He might have turned 5 in September or even late August.  Each state has different cutoff dates.  He could be 18 and starting his senior year.

It's very sad that he's dropped out.  How does he afford all his "toys"? An apprenticeship doesn't pay that much does it?  Some don't pay at all.

I think he has a perfectly normal reaction to his situation. He is not an educated adult, he is a teenager about to have a baby, and trust upon the national stage. Was he forced to marry her, maybe and maybe not, but it seems to me that he is trying to do the right thing, living with the consequences of his actions. I do agree that it is sad that he wont finish high school, but perhaps he is studying for his GED. It is not my place to judge his actions, but really he shouldn't talk to the press he will only hurt his image and the image of the Palin Family (not that they aren't doing that themselves every time they open their mouths).

Why does the boy have to drop out of school? Wont his parents and Bristol's parents help them out? What is Bristol going to do? Will she drop out as well?

Actually after doing a little research, even this first article is suspect but needs further information to be confirmed. I did a search on north slope electrical apprentice and came up with a couple job adds and a school that will give you the skills to become an apprentice electrician.

Job http://www.savec.org/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC=%7B72901839-53E4-4A85-9E5A-CA6799EF2ACD%7D - don't know if this is considered North Slope or not.

                            http://www.alpinealaska.travel/jobs/electrician-apprentice-aes-engineering-construction.cfm - definitely a North Slope company

The main thing in both of these adds is that the Electrician Apprentice applicant needs anywhere from 1,000 to 8,000 (depending on the company) documented "craft related" hours to fill the position. Does Levi have that experience already?

Now there is a school that teaches someone to become an electrician apprentice but they have this requirement for the student to have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Does Levi have or is he getting his GED? Here is the link for their class announcement. http://www.savec.org/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC=%7B72901839-53E4-4A85-9E5A-CA6799EF2ACD%7D

If he doesn't have any of the above, is someone pulling strings (not necessarily the Palins, could be his parents) so that he can get a jump start on being able to support Bristol? Or is this, like the second article referenced, just another sham "news story" created by someone who wants to try and put a positive spin on the Levi Johnston/Bristol Palin affair? Or muddy the waters by making it seems as if the Palins/Johnstons aren't going to suport their children? Time will tell.

JP who do you help? Sen Obama was not spooned fed with a silver spoon by a long shot. His mother help raise him with "Food Stamps" a far cry from a silver spoon. He spent a lot of his early years in Indonesian and I doubt if 99% of it people has ever seen a silver spoon, and never eaten out of one. You should spend sometime in the country and your mind would be changed the first day. Fighting rats for your supper, raw sewage in the streets, those killed by the rebel fighter's lay in the streets till their family comes and gets them and you think they are fed with silver spoons? Wrong!!  Sen Obama spent a lot of his childhood fighting poverty. Sen McCain was the son of a Naval Officer, so who had the best life? That is why Sen Obama is fighting for the middle class  people, who are unemployed, no health insurance, no savings and living on Welfare, Food Stamps and if lucky unemployment checks. McCain doesn't want to to tax the big Oil Companies, because that is where his stocks are, his Dad's, President Bush, VP Cheney and all his Senate Buddies and the lobbyists. If he taxes them he is hurting his friends and putting the screws to the middle and lower class people. Seems to me it is only fair to tax 5% who has millions and billions of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ than the working middle class when they can find work, maybe just for one day a week to buy a pack of diapers and a gallon of milk for their kids. happyblue: it depends on the rules of the school district and when your birthday falls.  I was one of the older kids in my class because my birthday in December could have put me either in the class I finished in or 1 grade back.

The Palin's are quite wealthy so  why should Levi drop out.  They have the financial means to help.

Nothing in this story passes the smell test. Blackberry and a gas-guzzling Silverado? He didn't buy them working at BK.

The baby is due Dec. 18. Johnston has dropped out of high school to take a job on the North Slope oil fields as an apprentice electrician.

Maybe in Gov Palin's America this represents "family values" but not in mine.

"They're not telling me anything right now," Johnston said as he checked his Blackberry. "It's pretty chill."

Last entry for the day. If  the two were planning on marrying before "the kid" (uh huh that's a nice way of putting it) why weren't they already married or at least have their wedding planned? Why did they only put the word out once Palin was on the ticket. Fishy. Why in the world would Palin subject her daughter to this. And the dufus who is marrying Bristol...thinks it's cool? Because he like Palin gets to be in the limelight at the expense of a girl who didn't think ahead of what she should have known would produce a child. Palin failed miserably there but nobody is going to stop teens from doing what comes natural, it just shouldn't have been publicized they were getting married anyway. Yep, it's a shotgun wedding . No getting out of that. But, the divorce rate is sky-high for this kind of reasoning. As soon as Palin is out of the lime light as a failure,Bristol will probably be dropped like a hot rock. I give it two years...the average young married couple pregnant as the reason or not.

I agree meneither.   What parent would allow their child to marry so young when these young marriages are clearly a recipe for disaster, particurly without an education.     It is my opinion the girl should not have got pregnant in the first place.  I have teen girls and believe me, we know there are accidents but the girls are well aware of the consequences of a pregnancy and do not want one at such an early age.   So, birth control and or abstaining is the preferred choice.   At least they know that being a teen should be full of fun and looking towards the future.    I suppose that Bristol will never have to worry about how to feed her child, her parents can support the couple.   But, this type of message is so wrong going out to our youth.   Most kids don't have parents that can step in to support kids when the going gets rough.

This girl acted irresponsibly, her parents are acting irresponsibly and now the future husband is irresponsibly throwing away his education one year before he is due to finish.

Thanks to everyone who answered my question about Johnston's age.

I am apalled that the Governor of Alaska cannot come up with a better solution for her daughter's pregnancy than to allow this young man to drop out of high school and go to work on the North Slope to support Bristol and the baby.  Couldn't the parents of these two teenagers come up with a plan that would allow them to finish high school and college?  It's not as if they can't afford it.

I wish him luck. I hope the new baby is healthy. I hope they live happily ever after even.

However, I do not see the reason he has left high school. He should finish school and then go to work. He will go further, as an electrician, with that diploma behind him. The adults around him should stress the need for education!

I also think that someone should whisper to him, that "the kid" isn't exactly an endearing way to talk about your first born.

I understand the unwelcome scrutiny must be difficult, however he was dating the Alaskan Governor's daughter. With or without the national campaign, there would be public scrutiny of the situation. Hopefully he'll grow into his new roles as husband and father with few public incidents. All parents learn on the job!

With all of that said, let's get back to the campaign. Go Obama!

but I do understand a young man saying "the kid". Boys are not really born with a motherly sense. He has no idea what it means to be a father until he has to be one. As a young mother, I would have never held it against my children's father if he said that.

But Johnston should take note: We were separated 1 year after the wedding and divorced 3 years later. Its been 10 years and finally after about 7 of those years did we realize what we put our kids through by being so dumb and thinking we knew it all at 18.  So I'd say not till I was 25 did I even posses the mentality to raise a child, thank God we had our parents to focus on us and our two kids instead of being VP.

I think that the country owes Bristol Palin a huge thank you.  Why?  Because she singlehandedly killed the phrase "family values".  No longer can the republican party use that phrase as a platform when, if they win, they will have an unmarried, pregnant teen living in the white house.
