Poll finds high anxiety on economy this month

advertisement

With little relief in sight, people are getting more anxious about the slumping economy and how it affects them.

The share of people who believe the country is moving in the right direction has plunged in just a few weeks, from 28 percent in September to 15 percent in October, according to an Associated Press-Yahoo News poll of likely voters that was released Monday.

At the same time there is a drop in those surveyed who say they are happy about the way things are going in their own lives. Now 59 percent say they are personally happy, compared with 70 percent last month.

The magnitude of the financial meltdown and its impact on the overall economy is hitting people hard across the social and economic spectrum.

Strikingly, one-third are worried about losing their jobs, half fret they will be unable to keep up with mortgage and credit card payments, and seven in 10 are anxious that their stocks and retirement investments are losing value, according to the poll.

Also, there is widespread distress about being able to afford unexpected medical expenses and children's college expenses, and having to postpone retirement because their savings have eroded, the survey found.

"I'm just a normal person trying to get by in life," said Mary Huss, 57, an unemployed social worker from Salinas, Calif., who is facing cash shortages and questions about how she will pay her medical costs and her teenagers' college expenses. "And yet I feel fortunate that I'm not in the place where a lot of Americans are where they're losing their homes."

The AP-Yahoo News poll, conducted by Knowledge Networks, has repeatedly interviewed a group of about 2,000 people since last November in an effort to get a person-by-person view of how the country is reacting to the presidential campaign and the events affecting it.

The picture the survey paints of those who have grown less happy since September is telling. One-third are retirees.

James Haste, 78, of Arvada, Colo., is among those who have watched their retirement savings shrink.

In September he said the nation was headed in the right direction. Now he is among the 84 percent who say it is hurtling off track. The retired engineer lists the financial crisis, the energy situation and rising unemployment as the top problems.

"Markets are going to come back, but not soon," he said. Banks and other financial institutions "are going to have to write off a lot of bad stuff, and who's going to take the hit? The banks can't do it if they're going to stay in business. It's a slow process."

A Republican, Haste said he sees government bailouts such as the $700 billion plan passed by Congress this month and the Treasury Department's plans to buy shares in major banks as necessary evils. Overall, 54 percent said they approved of the rescue plan, 28 percent disapproved and the rest had no opinion.

The poll shows how financial worries have permeated all corners of society, with some hit harder than others:

_While about one-third overall worry about financing a child's college education, six in 10 people under age 45 are anxious about it.

_53 percent worry they will have to work longer because their retirement savings have dwindled, and 66 percent of people in their 40s feel that way.

_One-third worry about losing their job, but nearly half in their 30s and 40s do.

_Forty-six percent of whites and 62 percent of blacks worry about making mortgage and credit card payments.

_Sixty-six percent overall are concerned about facing major medical bills, including 78 percent of unmarried women.

_Nearly eight in 10 college graduates worry that the value of their stocks and retirement investments is falling.

Public approval of both President Bush and Congress has followed the downward spiral of financial markets, the survey showed.

The poll found that 25 percent said they approved of the way Bush was handling his presidency, down from 32 percent in August. Remarkably, just 3 percent said they strongly approve of the job Bush is doing, compared with 51 percent strongly disapproving.

Just 11 percent said they approved of the job Congress is doing, while virtually no one gave lawmakers strong approval.

Anderson Lee, 21, a caregiver from Bowling Green, Ohio, is among those saying the country is heading the right way.

"Certainly there are some problems we're facing now with the economy and overseas issues," Lee said. "But we've faced larger problems in the past. That spirit of working together and working to make the country better will drive us through the problems we're facing."

Donna Gasior, 43, a professor at a Detroit-area community college, said the stock market tumble is having a "huge effect because pretty much everyone's retirement funds are in the stock market." She said she believes she has time to recoup but her 69-year-old mother "gets a majority of her income just from investments."

A Democrat, Gasior said that "mismanagement and policies have really come home to roost with the economic collapse we're seeing. I think things have been on the wrong track for a long time."

The AP-Yahoo News poll included 841 likely voters, was conducted from Oct. 3-13, and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points. Included were interviews with 373 Democrats, 252 Republicans and 214 independents.

The poll was conducted over the Internet by Knowledge Networks, which initially contacted people using traditional telephone polling methods and followed with online interviews. People chosen for the study who had no Internet access were given it for free.

I am curious if the 28% to 15% drop in economy beliefs are parallel to Bush ratings? Just curious.

I don't think it has ties to Bush's ratings, though they are also at about 15%, but more that people thought this crisis would come and go quickly and they wouldn't be personally involved.  It has shown to be much more involved and many more people are feeling its affects upon them and now they are starting to worry.

This is where Obama is pulling all his votes from.  People concerned about the economy do not want more of the same from McCain.

What are you talking about???

I'm certain that with McCain's mastery of understanding the Fundamentals of our Economy, coupled with the brilliant sharp mind of Sarah Palin assisting him, that our economy will recover under their guidance if McCain/Palin wins come november...

Democrat in Ct,  This is where Obama's plan makes no sense, Taxing businesses is not the answer, that well only cause businesses to fail or move out of the country and either way that will cause employment to drop incredibly. People that have 401's well be paying much higher taxes on any dividends, he will be raising capital gaines, so if and when the market turns around, people again will be having to pay more in order to sell their homes, and most of the people that have any equity are seniors and need any gains to help them in retirement.  A redistribution of wealth is nothing more than a step closer to socialism, and America has always lead the world because of capitalism and free market.  Obama and the dems in congress will definately kill our economy for years and years to come. Not only that but Obama cannot commit to drilling and neuclear energy, which this country needs desparately now..none of the democrates in congress want this they would rather continue to be dependant on foreign oil and give our money to countries that hate us..This is NOT THE TIME FOR OBAMA.

Beverly,  You need to understand how 401K's work.  Their dividends are not taxed.  The withdrawls (must take out after you are 701/2) are taxed as ordinary income.  There is a schedule for the percentage that must be taken out.  Under Obama's plan, anything under $50,000 for seniors are not taxed at all.  The problem with not knowing things is that you make arguments that make no sense.  That is why you need to read and study before saying anything, otherwise the discussion is useless.

Your grasp of the economy and taxes are about as good as Joe the Plummers.  I'd be worrying about that if I were you, because his is lousy.  To not know which candidate offers you the better deal for what you make today instead of at some far-off, la-dee-da date when you could possibly be making over $250,000 a year makes no sense at all.  Unless you happen to be making a lot of money, Obama is giving you the better deal.  Wake up and smell the coffee.

      Democrat in CT,

You said people don't want more of the same. The same what? Lower income tax, no death tax, lower capital gains tax. I think you meant to say they like Obama's idea of giving money to people that haven't earned it. A welfare program paid for by working class america. That's what you want to say but you won't. This economy RECENTLY has fallen and Bush has nothing to do with it. That's why congress has an 11% approval rating right now and it controlled by the democrats. The mortgage crisis has brought down this economy and not George Bush. People like OBAMA teaching ACORN how to pressure mortgage companies into give sub par loans and Dodd and Frank passing loose regulation on these companies to give the mortgages within the last two years. You blanket your statement about the economy and you don't or choose not to except the cause of the problem but say it's Bush. Loose the democrat line of conversation and engage in real debate and you loose everytime. McCain can't speak as eliquent as Obama and he can't get his message out clear but educated people like myself understand but most don't and that is unfortunate for the republican party. Have faith in GOD not money and you will be ok. Meaning, quit asking for money from our government and work hard and pray and you will be ok. God bless america in this time of trouble.

Helen, i understand where you are going, but you need to take another look at Obama's plan, YOUR 401 DIVIDENDS wil be taxed  with Obama's plan, check it out
Some how you have all got the impression that Obama is going to wave a magic wand and create great wealth for you, when in the end it will be higher prices and more taxation, His plan will in the beginning when he sends you someone elses earnings, feel like your making headway ,but when you actually sit down and look at things with a clear mind you will see how much more it is costing you...BAD PLAN

And to think we are only in the beginning stage of relief, the road to recovery is going to take more than just adding money to relieve Wall Street. This country needs to look at what has drained this economy and how Joe the plumber is going to aide in plugging the hole? The hope is in a new economy based on sound business development where great jobs are created not good jobs, where growth is going to be a catalyst and where Joe the plumber is going to recognize that in order to collect fees you need to have people cabable of paying the fee.

EEEman, you might as well say the country needs people to fail in business, because Obama's plan will help them fail, then what does that do to the economy?

Obama's plan stinks, the law of gravity shows that. If you fill a vase with water and it overflows where does the rest of the water go, it trickles down.

Bigger, have you ever owned a small business? I have and I'll tell you something most business owners do not take money off the top, they have to reinvest into their businesses, paying for employees and inventory, rent, taxes, licenses and marketing, most small business owners are everyday people trying to get by and run a business.

Beverly, I am a small business owner and I understand what you are saying, however I feel that you are looking at this "broken" glass and wondering where more water is going to fit.  First, and most important, Obama has stated that he is not going to jump in and raise taxes, that was his initial plan, but the economy needs some real help right now and he feels that doing that will hurt the people that he is trying to help.  Obama feels that he must first look at the WHOLE situation and begin healing the problems and root causes.  If you have roots in your sewer system, just having a plumber run a cutter through the pipes is a fix not a solution.  You need to have the tree removed so the roots don't grow back, right?  So we need to remove the "tree" that has caused our problems.  Sen. McCain says the economy is "sound" it is currently going through a problem, however the foundation is in good order.  That is the mindset that scares me.  He doesn't believe there is a larger problem with this, just a minor set-back that will fix itself in time.

BeverlyH you are right should a business fail then what does a good business person do. Failure is a part of the risk, however, when one is in business and you should know there tends to be a constant seeking of how to capitalize as well as compartmentalize the business into efficient rewarding means for the proprietor as well as the employee. Though the key BeverlyH is taking the initiative to get started.

Actually yes...when you have more expendable income you are more apt to tip more, go out more, be more generous to the kids in front of Publix and the firemen on the corner with the "Fill the Boot" campaign.  It's when this expendable income dries up that most people, myself included, have to reign in the finances and shift from what you want to give vs. what you are able to give.

Expendable income is high right now as business is good...so the local band students (in front of Publix) got some extra folding cash in their collection plate, and we purchased like 5 or 6 pumpkins from our local church instead of just 1 for the family.

So to answer your question, 'yes'...when there is "extra" money, I am more apt to give it to causes I'd like to help, give extra in holiday tips to the trash man, lawn men, pool guys, etc. and maybe was unable to do when I had to tie things a bit tighter.

Shawn, you are either in the oil industry or have a secret that Donald Trump would like in on.  Ol' Don is looking at cutting back on spending.

My favorite line from 'Pursuit of Happyness' is appropriate, if you are enjoying a luxurious economy at this time..."What do you do and how do you do it?"

              pc,

not in oil, or...whatever Trump actually "does" (besides sport the scary dew)...based on your handle, I'm in the same industry as you...software development/database design.  And I've always kept my expenses quite low (unlike Donald) so the recession isn't hurting too bad...and while the market is hurting my long term retirement funds (i'll be 38 in a couple weeks so i'm not looking to retire anytime soon), I'm figuring on a long term rebound, so buying in on established companies.

My current good fortune is attributed to (in my personal opinion), extremely hard work and flexability (hyper "type-A" personality) combined with blessings from above (go ahead and laugh non-believers).

Again, keep in mind I'm not talking about spending like Donald, but when you see some kids in front of the store and you know they're sacrificing their personal time for something they believe in...honestly...what's a $20 for their continued involvement in something as important as the arts, when we all know the schools don't push the arts anymore.

And for the pumpkins...think that bill came to like $23...again, not a real big spender, but it helps out the local church.

Pc you mentioned the broken glass, the glass may be broken but it has not been the trickledown taxes that broke the glass, and you know it, so to say trickledown does not work is crazy, because if the people at the top are the ones providing the jobs to those at the bottom, those at the bottom succeed  in provided for their families, if those at the top are taxed more the ones at the bottom not only lose by seeing less in wage increases but also less in job opportunities. It just won't work.

Beverly, do you realize that trickle down is a slam at the economic theory that Regan advocated?  Nobody wants trickle down, and the only people calling it that were those making fun of Reagan's ideas.  Are you really in business?  I find that hard to believe.

Helen, reagan was the one that got it right...And trickledown does create business opportunities and wage increases, there is no way that redistribution of wealth is going to create economical growth, its just another word for more government less private sector. Its time people realize that the more government involvement with the private sector business the less capitalism. therefore less growth...You should rephrase and say what you mean, no one waiting in line for their piece of someones wealth wants trickledown. But what happens when you get that very small piece your waiting for, will that help you in the long run after its gone? I don't think so

What has amazed me , noe that Joe the Plumber is not quit the "everyman" McCain has depicted, is how quickly McCain/Palin supporters are dutifully thwing aroun the trems "socialism" and "redistribution of wealth (ever heard of progressive income taxes?) in sudden panic, reacting in exactly the sheep-like way they intended you to. We already have a few aspects of "socialism" that I doubt few would give up, especially since we are not a nation of putting something away for the futeure on our own: Social Security, Medicare, and all the state and local programs we have lived with for decades:SCHIP (practically destroyed by Bush), Emegency Family Assistance in my county who kept one of my husband's long term employees with a roof over his head, including his wife and young children), and the informal kind, as in when my husband gave this guy and another advances on their paychecks just so they could eat, even though we are having struggle ourselves sinc my husband's small business has declined due to the economy after providing a decent living for almost three decades. If youreally want to get picky, how about all the church and other religious "give aways"? Isn't that classic spreading the wealth? We have a social contract of sorts that we have always lived by in this country. We pay taxes so that government cando things we cannot do alone: building roads and bridges, paying for schools and teachers, police, fire departments, in some places even garbage pick-up. Health care, supporting the elderly instead of letting them live on the streets, health department which are supposed to keep us safe from health threats, bad food, epidemics, etc. We are nowhere near the European Social Democracies, and Socialism is not the equivalent that dread word "communism" let alone dictatorial communism. So now you have new words and phrases to bandy about: just follow the leader instead of doing any independent thinking. It's SOOOO much easier than educating your self or thinking.

Shawn, well that explains what you were stating better.  I don't mind shelling out for the schools, except that with a daughter in marching band and another in school band, that shelling is starting to hurt!  The schools in Arizona have no budget.  Senator McCain has provided NO benefit to help in all the years he has been our State Senator and now our U.S. Senator/representative!  I don't see how he can help the rest of America when he can't help his home State.  Kind of funny, in 2000, the same was said of a certain Governor in Texas!  Look what happened then!  Although, on the bright-side, Texas was able to get a much better Governor!

Beverly, we have been "trickling" down for 8 years and I haven't seen any benefits of it.  Under Clinton, I saw a boom in my business there were long lines at the movie theater, which is a sign of excess spending, there were people starting new businesses that are now closed or closing or merging, including banks and mortgage companies!  I don't know how long we are supposed to wait for the trickle to make it us, but I have all but exhausted my resources and am close to being back at paycheck-to-paycheck living, not where I want to be again!  I don't want and can ill-afford to wait through another 4 years!

The glass is broken, the system is broken and the CEO's that have been enjoying a greatly reduced taxation has not been doing anything but tinkling on us, instead of investing heavily into their businesses and hiring more people and researching new technologies and building and producing!  It has been more of a "thanks for the break, I am going to buy a new yacht!"  Which only helps the economy for a brief moment verses employing.  The new yacht becomes another tax shelter and write-off and they protect more money from taxes, which then puts the burden of providing money for our spending on the middle-class.  You and Me!

Cynthia, I understand what you are saying and I think, barring the misspellings, you stated it very well.

Pc if you remember correctly Clinton was still using trickledown from the reagan era,Clinton was lucky because reagan had a real mess, with really high interest rates and gas rationing,  high deficit, and big spending,From Carter, He got it pretty much under control except for the deficit and even that started coming down(although it was still high)but when Bush one came in we engaged in desert storm and it went back up,interest rates began to come down, then when Clinton came into office he was benefiting from the progress reagan made and Clinton brought the deficit to a surplus, When Carter was in office it was horrible, interest rates were 21% and we were taxed up the fanny, we had to wait in long lines only on certain days to get gasoline. I remember those days well, thats when I was in the Air Force.
All in all I know you will vote the way you want and thats what its all about.
Obama's plan is not even close to the plan clinton had in office, its a whole different approach to get us further along the socialism trail, and thats frightening, more goverment, more taxation, less private sector

I am mixed between anxious and nauseous, as to where the economy has been heading for the past several years.  I tried to alert my congress with emails and phone calls, but to no avail.  Like rushing waters, it is difficult to divert at the end.  I agree that we need to evaluate the WHOLE system and implement a working plan that will not only get us out of this mess, but set it up so we don't have to revisit it again.  They say with history that if you don't pay attention you are doomed to repeat it!

Sen. McCain's new catch phrase is to be transparent.  I like that and sincerely hope that he becomes so transparent, we don't even know he's around anymore!

Beverly, you may wish to review your facts, prior to spouting off.  It would be great if we could just point the finger and say the fault all lies with this person or this group, etc.  The truth is that many people are to blame because many people were making lots of money from the deregulation process and the loans being written.  In case you haven't gone through the process recently enough to remember, there are loan origination fees (these fees go to someone's pocket), there are points and percentages (pockets...), down payments (sometimes, new loans were written without out-of-pocket down payments, but were instead derived from the seller) these always find their way into someone's bank account.  Then the disaster hit, these folks were told that their home would gain equity and that by the time the ARM hit they would have enough credit history and equity they could refi with a fixed rate at a lower monthly and they would be set for another 10-15 years when they could refi again and knock that monthly payment down more.  THAT usually is good advice and has been very workable, HOWEVER we had this collapse in the system and people couldn't refi when the ARM term was up and their monthly mortgages went higher.  Well, not everyone could afford this higher payment and they got behind, which institutes the penalty rate and the monthly payment goes even higher, than the buyer can't afford any of the payment and defaults and the home is foreclosed upon.

These were GOOD loans to GOOD hard-working people that made an investment at what turns out to be a very bad time.  But who really knew 7 years ago that this was the future?

I am not a mortgate broker, but I did have my real estate license for awhile and I went back into the computer field, but I know what was going down.  I feel bad when everyone jumps on this "why were those people buying homes they couldn't afford?  They did it to themselves, idiots!"  GET OFF THEIR BACKS!  It was a good idea at a bad time!

I try to look at my clients the same way I look at myself, if I think there will be a problem for them somewhere down the line I recommend they seek council from a mortgage advisor before making a commitment to a potential hardship. I may be one of the few business people that truly care about my clients, Because I lost my own home about a year and a half ago and know how difficult it is.

Beverly, fair enough.  I had my license for the two year period and decided not to renew it.  I had a difficult time, just as the "bubble" burst.  I failed to produce, because I "helped" my clients that were prequaled for a home that would have been a disaster!  I suggested a different home that was priced lower, but needed some TLC.  They were "happy" but didn't come back.  I am sure they sought out another agent that would "help" them get the house they wanted.  I worry about them in this time, they would have another 3 years on their 5 year ARM!  I am very customer oriented, even though it doesn't always pay to be so!  I sleep well at night, when I can!

Pc, I hear you, I have always been in some kind of customer service and pride myself on actually working for the good of my clients, I guess thats why I have so little, but at least I can sleep at night and that means alot, and I do get refferals from those clients and thats a good thing, It is very tough in the industry right now, the banks aren't loaning to just anybody with a pulse and thats good.

I decided to get into real estate so I could work primarily from home and be a mom too, its probably not as lucritive financially, but sometimes we make choices that show our priorities and my priority is my daughter and that won't change no matter how destitude I become.

Beverly, I thought the same thing when I was pursuing my license.  However, I had "floor time" and open houses and I ended up working way more hours than a "regular" job and little from home, like I had hoped.  I missed my daughter's 13th birthday party two years ago and didn't make any money.  I started doing more computer business on the side and eventually just went back into what I do best, fixing things.  I work strange hours some days, but for the most part I have regulated hours and I don't miss out on important events.

Keep your chin up, I firmly believe the market will rebound and you will see a more lucrative career.

PC, I agree, and one thing about me is I'm not a quitter, I feel if I can hang on, eventually, maybe I will see the good things in life. I 'm a pretty basic person, never go for the glitz, I try to keep it real because I know my kids can see that just because you don't always get what someone else has, doesn't mean you have to feel like a failure in life. I too am a veteran, Air Force, so I know how you feel about our freedoms, and to be honest with you I think with an Obama presidency some of those freedoms will be taken away, and it really bothers me.

Beverly, I understand how you feel, but honestly, we have lost so many freedoms with GW Bush and I haven't heard McCain say he wants to change them back.  I believe, based on his following with Bush, that McCain "may" feel like more securities are needed, which means even more freedoms are taken away.

I am speaking of the Patriot Act, which is anything but patriotic! The TSA at the airports, which are NOT providing safer air travel, but ARE costing millions of dollars and many airlines to fold under!  We need to revamp so many areas, that "fresh blood" in the White House would be the best beginning.

I have not even brought in the other issues, energy, war, conservation, environment, ecology, labor, health insurance reform, school reform, etc... that are so important to our future.  I have positive items with Sen. Obama on every issue, but not so many with Sen. McCain on the vast majority of them.  They do, both, want to reform the schools and the money teachers get, so that is good.  But the concern is that Arizona (my home state) is at #47 in the school stats (where #1 is best) and we moved up two spots in the last two years!  Point is, as a Senator of Arizona, he has not provided any budget reform nor assistance to get us up the ladder.  Two other states have declined below us, it is not that Arizona did anything to move up the two spots.  Leave no child behind is the worst joke, so many children are getting left behind!  Schools are getting left behind!

As a veteran, I don't know if you saw any "action" as they call it, but I see Sen. McCain's open resentment and despise of Russia, N. Korea, Iran and Pakistan as a real threat and an "open door" for global war, if he is not careful!  I don't want my children to have to face that, I don't want to have America become a battle front!  Red Dawn is a movie that I don't want to see become a reality!

Drill here, drill now and bomb Iran are not strategies that are going to help America succeed and I want to succeed!

Real Leadership for real issues!  Obama/Biden '08

Pc, I may not agree with you on most of the political issues, but I do believe that you are decent man and are thinking, and thats a good thing because many people are looking at this election as a popularity contest, not at what the long term effect of "CHANGE" will be. for me I'm looking at the long term effect, because some how when we start thinking that capitalism is not good for America, I think we truly have lost our luster. Capitalism and freedoms have always been our beauty and appeal to other nations, far and wide, capitalism is what has allowed people like you and I to have the opportunies for growth and anything less then that, will begin taking those opportunities away from everyone. I know people think O is going to provide them with more money by redistributing from those that create jobs, the long term effect of this plan is more unemployment and less wage increases. Its time we take back America from the government and cut spending across the board, yes that means alot of programs will no longer be available but the reality of it is, if we allow costly programs to continue to drain our government, our government will not recover. I understand their are alot of people that feel the money being spent on the war in Iraq could do alot of good here, but the truth is if we don't control what our congress is spending, no amount of money is going to help us, because there is too much wasteful spending. I feel the way McCain feels about the war, we will end it soon, but it won't be in defeat. coming home in defeat would be the worst thing for this country because of the threat on our land, if we give up the ship the enemy sees the weakness and comes after us. As far as the energy, I feel we need to drill, and have clean coal, wind, solar, natural gas, and neuclear energy and the only way to become free from the middle east dependancy is to start now. Obama won't commit to drilling or neuclear energy.
And then the last matter is education, Obama wants charter school option (which is fine) but he wants organizations like Acorn to come in and teach radical activism programs to our children, I totally oppose that. I really feel that is the one thing he feels strongest about given his back ground and associates. McCain wants to have charter schools  and vouchers for students, he wants parents to be involved with the choice of schools and their educations.
See I see it as being like this:
McCain wants less government, less taxes, and more choices for families
Obama wants more government , more taxation and mandated school programs

Beverly, thank you.  I have done my best to live an honorable life, one that I am proud to pass onto my children and have little of regrets to display to anyone.  I have made mistakes, but I have learned and grown from them.  I have never been a criminal nor engaged in criminal actions.
I have three daughters in the school system, I supplement their 'watered-down' teach the AIMS test education with home-school type supplements.  I have nothing against Charter schools, I have seen them help the system.  One, they reduce the number of students in the public schools.  Two, they provide an alternative and we know that competition helps to strengthen lacking business practices.  I have seen many different types of teachers and teaching methods, however, being involved with my school and my daughters schooling I can most assure you that I would not tolerate "radical" teaching!  These are fear tactics that Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are spreading, because they no longer have any issues to support.  They have flip/flopped on so many ideas and promises, are you certain that you are still current on his current positions?
ACORN involved in schools is nothing I have heard of.  That would be similar to the American Red Cross getting involved, wouldn't it?  That would be outside of the scope of their charter and would lead to possible removal of their "not for profit" standing.  What background and associates are you referring to?  He has been in a Christian upbringing for over 20 years.  He has been involved with the Constitution and his work to help people.  He could have easily used his law degree to make a ton of money, but he decided to help people instead.  He has been through a thorough background check, as have all Senators/Congressmembers and there has not been anything that blocked him from his State to move to the U.S. Senate and nothing to keep him from running for President.  Now if you believe that you have a more thorough background on him than our Government officials have ran, you should report your findings for further investigations, otherwise, you are slandering and repeating hearsay.  You know, like if you are showing prospects a house and I come over and start saying that the electrician has been there and the whole house needs to be rewired and the plumbing is broken.  Then you have an inspector go through and none of it is true, but you lost a sale because of hearsay.  Know what I mean?
General Colin Powell has decided to support Senator Obama, that is not taken lightly.  He would have insight as to whether Sen. Obama was capable of during harm to America or not and with his support I would believe that he is not here to harm us.  On that note, the secret service would kill him, with malice, if he was trying to institute any terrorists or terrorist activities.  That I believe and trust in!

PC, We definately have a lot in common, except for our political veiws, I too have my youngest daughter 14, in a charter school two days a week and I home school her the rest of the time, She is a very bright child well above grade level(makes me proud) my oldest daughter is married she is 23 and is an oral sugeons assistant. I'm very proud of both of my girls. anyway If you check into ACORN and CAC they are both reform programs and their main objective is to promote school programs, and yes they are teaching radical activisim, I am not trying to spread fear, so please check out these organizations, CAC was spearheaded by William Ayers and Acorn is closely related to it. and the associations I refer too are the two organizations I just named.

I personally would not call the church he attended even near the christian teaching I have had, it was a very racist church and anti-american, I know you've heard some of the sermons that have been publicized and there is just no way you can dispute the messages. That is a great concern to me.

As far as him using his law degree to make tons of money, well this could very will be, but I can assure you his decisions to do community service work with Ayers, and Acorn were politically motivated. Khalid Al Monsour arranged for him to go to Harvard Law School, he had attended Columbia on a BB scholarship and that is where he met and befriended Rashid Khalidi, this was the professor that arranged for Ahkmedenijad to come and speak at the university last month. Frank Marshal Davis was someone Obama calls Frank in his book and refers to as a father figure, anywho, to make a long story short I think there are just too many things that point to some pretty frightening outcomes.  Please look up the names I gave you, Davis, Khalidi, khalid, CAC and ACORN, so you will understand why I feel the way I do.

And its very nice that Colin Powell is supporting him, I have a personal connection with Powell, I met him back in 95 and he kissed my daughter, I respect him very much but I don't agree that Obama is the right one.

Like I said before one of the best things about America is our freedom to vote.

SEE my column where I ask John McCain several hard by fair question:

"Just call me Joe the disabled American Veteran" by Doyle Wheeler this is a column is worth reading and pushing up the vine perhaps we actually may get someone from the media with the courage to ask McCain some hard questions instead of lobing him the soft balls he gets from Fox News Channel.

The hate mongering and racist speech being stirred up by Palin and the Republican party many spell the death of GOP.

How much negativism can the public stand when everywhere we look everything is negative and crumbling - the economy, house mortgages, bankruptcy, health care, and ongoing wars.

How could McCain´s handlers not realize how negativism at this time is EXACTLY what the public doesnt want to heart ?

Tom, its so typical, I live in California, we have section 8 housing here, thats where the government pays for the people to rent houses, the ones that take the section 8 are the ones driving the BMW's, and lexus around town, while the rest of us can barely afford gas with our high rents..Lately there have been alot of raids of section 8 houses because the low lifes are living high on the hog taking free rent...I can just imagine what will happen if Obama is elected...Gee I wonder why California is going bankrupt...can't imagine
Its a pretty good indication how his free money program will work.

BeverlyH should there be people in Section 8 housing owning the types of cars you are speaking of, then someone in the government agency is not doing their job. The regulations regarding Section 8 housing have restrictions, and are to regulate credit reporting agencies should a person or persons income exceed a designed limit, thisin turn is to place limitations on extended lines of credit. As for the free money end of things, I believe a lot of the abuse began as deregulation occurred, and in recalling a few of the campaign rhetorical speeches, I believe both candidates are suggesting that deregulation has failed and that regulated banking and credit lending institutions would be a solution to adjusting the country's current economic problems.

I have heard of many people abusing the system.  I witnessed a lady pull up to a store in a BMW, she was "easy on the eye."  When she got the few items she needed she swiped her food stamp card and was gone.  I thought to myself, well maybe she borrowed the car? Nah, someone has found a way around the system.  That's okay, I looked into the penalties for abuse and these folks have some real "hard time" coming their way.  They will get caught, there are many "check points" in the system, it is just a matter of time, then it will be a matter of "hard time" in prison!

Pc, Thats right, Schwartznegger has not cut alot of things he should have cut, section 8 housing is one thing that would have saved our state alot of money...another thing that should be dealt with is the abuse of welfare and  the horrendous fraud that comes with it, the illegals coming in and draining our funds is another thing that he didn't stop.
The schools are all so full of illegal citizens that those of us that are legal have to seek out other alternatives..Its a real desaster.

I have an economist view and believe that the market is fully capable of righting itself.  I know, too, though that the market did not destroy itself and so the road to recovery needs to be helped along, just as the road to this point was 'helped along.'

Beverly, I appreciate your participation in these discussions, especially the fact that you don't resort to 'name calling' and rudeness, thank you!

You don't need my permission, nor do I believe you are asking for it, to vote for whomever you wish.  I served in the Marine Corps and helped to defend that right to vote or not vote, it is called freedom and I appreciate it every single day!  I believe you do too!

Wouldn't it be a better place to live, if sound people like ourselves had more control of how our government worked?  Wouldn't it be great if the government had to ask us, before they spent $5,000 on a dinner?  Regardless that it is for charity, if those Senators had to pony up the $5,000 from their own wallet, they would not attend, right?  The dinner is a write-off, the transportation is a write-off, they spend no money of their own and yet they are 'heroes' for giving so much to charity!  This is across the board...Dems, Repubs, Lib, Independents, etc, ad nausem.

My thinking is if you can't afford the rent find rent you can afford, alot of these section 8 homes are brand new homes built in 2006, after the bubble burst the home developers couldn't move them so they became section 8.

The government should not be in the business of providing homes to anybody unless its a healthcare facility

I served in Vietnam and I was warned upon my arrival that if I was ever captured that I was to only give my name, rank, and serial number. I served in a unit that was made up of 90 % black men, and I was one of only two white Sergeants in this unit. I clearly had my life saved by my fellow black soldiers at great risk to their own personal safety. This was during a time when there were parts of America, that they were still being told they could not enter because it was for whites only.

I was wounded along with a number of my brother soldiers in an attack. While waiting for the helicopter to arrive to take us to the rear area hospital, I noticed that I was bleeding along side of a fellow black soldier.
As strange as this might sound to Gov. Palin I could not distinguish my blood from the other soldiers as they ran together onto the ground in Vietnam. They were exactly the same shade of red blood. Just two American soldiers bleeding together, one black one white imagine that.

Now in light of the very ugly racist campaign McCain has run and his demand for Senator Obama to answer and answer over and over his having worked on a school board committee with an old radical from the 1960 when Obama was eight years old. I want to ask a few questions of my own.

McCain what information exactly did you give the enemy when you were broke as you put it? Sir the American people have the right to know! Did you in fact push for normalizing relations with Vietnam as a means of keeping them from telling the American people what you had actually said? I think the American people have the right too know sir!

McCain is it true that you gave into blackmail and fought for the establishment of normal relations with the country of Vietnam as a means of keeping them from playing their tape recordings of you spilling your guts? I want you to answer this question sir the American people have the right to know!

Sir what exactly is the long term relationship you have carried on with the convicted burglar and one time suspected terrorist G. Gordon Liddy? Please answer me sir the American people have the right to know!

Sir when you were attempting to interfere with regulators so your good buddy Keating could fleece the American people out of over $250,000,000.00 how much did he bribe you with sir? We know about the $112,000.00 but how much did he give you under the table? Sir the American people have the right to know!

Senator McCain do you believe you can trash one the brightest men to run for President in the last fifty years or more, and not get asked some tough but fair questions yourself?
I expect an immediate response as you owe the American people an accounting of your actions on these very serious matters sir!
Your party talks about family values, how many times did you commit adultery with your current wife, while married to your previous wife sir! The American people have the right to know?

Senator last week when you were making a speech and you stubled and said "My fellow prisoners of war!" when it was clear you were trying to say "My Fellow Americans". Sir was that related to your dementia? Sir the American people have a right to examine your medical records. You want us to elect you and place Sarah the lest qualified VP candidate in history a heart beat away from the oval office and your attacking erratic! The American people have the right to know!

Sir you can call me "Joe the American disabled veteran". Lastly sir why have you been AWOL when it comes to votes on "Veterans Benefits"leaving you sir with one of the worst records in the Senate? Sir the American veterans and the men and women fighting for this country have a right to know why you have consistently been missing in action when it comes to supporting veterans!
                                                          Anticipating your immediate reply
                                                          Sincerely,
Joe the American disabled veteran! I can be reached Senator McCain at doylewheeler@yahoo.com Please answer my questions sir.

No one wants to serve his country the way McCain did = making over 30 propaganda broadcasts condemning his fellow military, & ratting out all our secret naval bombing flight routing & tactics - which undoubtedly led to the deaths & further capture of American military personnel.

True heroes are the POWs who gave only their name rank & serial #, or who fed the enemy misinformation. Even McCain says he's ashamed of the unusually high degree of willing collaboration that he gave to America's enemies. John McCain is a traitor.

I believe the best way to fight inflation/recession or deficit is paying off the foreign dept of 10 trillion dollars we owe with the world bank with our reserve. We can convert this mineral reserve to money reserve, example of this is when we mined gold, silver, bronze, steel, drill oil and others deposits and fabricate the steel into structural beam or others, copper, etc, so in a way it will be saleable to both domestic and foreign market , then by converting meniral deposit to money reserve, so we can use to restructure and pay foreign depts. Spending, borowing will only put us in a deeper hole mess until we restructure to payoff our foreign dept of 10 trillion dollars.

roland, I like your thought process.  Unfortunately, business has found it more profitable to take this process outside of America, where there are NO pollution laws and very cheap labor!  The business owners are making the money, but it is not benefiting America nor is it being used to pay down our debt.  I think you are suggesting that the government take over these mineral resources and generate jobs and money that could be used to pay off the debt, is that right?

"I believe that there are those measures that had to be taken by Congress to shore up not only the housing market but the credit markets -- also to make sure that that's not frozen -- so that our small businesses have opportunities to borrow. And that was the purpose, of course, and that part of the bailout and the shoring of the banks," Palin said.

Why can't I seem to follow and understand anything she says?  If she was a journalism major, she should have good writing skills and you would think that good oratory and articulating skills would follow...

By any measur, I would call that socialism, government controls of certain aspects flow of money in the economy. But hey, if it works, credit starts to flow freely and people can negotiate themselves into staying in their homes, and CEOs aren't making hundreds of millions that should go to stockholders, well, good for this little experiment in socialism!

Nader actually had me intrigued. I seeded it but as a noob I can't share it.

The mortgage crisis, your are correct. If we had no war and no mortgage crisis where would the economy be? Booming, your are correct again. Explain to me why we need to give money to people who don't work and call it a tax refund? I don't know either. All facts but hard core Dems like yourself don't care, you just want to say that you have your canidate in office. Bill Clinton is a raving conservative compared to Barack.
