In mom-daughter disputes, politics is personal

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Karen and Kristen Ingraham, who’ve always been more BFF than mother and daughter, were united in their rabid support of Sen. Hillary Clinton. But when it became clear that Sen. Barack Obama had clinched the Democratic nomination, mom headed right — but daughter stayed left.

"Since Kristen was born, it's always been ‘Just you and me, kid.’ She finishes my sentences,” says single mom Karen Ingraham, who’s 55 and lives in Baltimore. “We've never had an argument about anything important — maybe about a $100 dollar pair of blue jeans. It's just shocking."

During one of the most heated presidential elections in this country’s history, party lines are being drawn among loved ones of every kind — couples, friends and family members — including that close-but-often-contentious relationship: mothers and daughters.

For mothers and daughters, fights over the political often feel very personal, particularly in an election with a woman GOP vice presidential candidate and following a tight race where a female was a finalist for the Democratic nomination.

On top of that, if this is the only the first or second time a daughter has been old enough to vote in a presidential election, she and her mom are still new at navigating the dicey terrain of political disagreements.

Generational divides are evident in certain election polls. Young voters favor Barack Obama over John McCain 59 percent to 38 percent, according to the latest Gallup data. Voters 65 and older are more evenly divided, with 45 percent for Obama and 43 percent for McCain. Among women overall, there's a big gap between the 54 percent who support Obama and the 39 percent who choose McCain.

Within those numbers are likely countless mother-daughter duos polarized by political preference — and surprised at the impact on their connection.

“Women tend to be more intense about relationships, they tend to prioritize relationships more,” says Nadine Kaslow, an Emory University psychologist. “Even if you think of female relationships in elementary school or the professional world, the women are often more intense about it than the guys are.”

That intensity and closeness also often means moms and daughters know exactly how to push each other’s buttons.

"It's kind of depressing, because she says things that zing," mother Karen Ingraham says. “She says, ‘Every time I look at (McCain), all I see is old. He's just old, mom.’ I go, well, I'm getting old!’”

It’s arguments like that that make her 26-year-old daughter want to scream. “It's almost like, you know, she's being tricked!” says Kristen Ingraham, who lives in Boston. “And you want to point it out to her — you want to shake her and say, 'You're falling for it!' — but you can't say that, 'cause it's your mother!"

They both accuse each other of the same thing: “She’s so headstrong!”

“She used to be really good at seeing both sides — but that's probably because we've always been on the same side," Karen Ingraham says.

Christina Heidkamp and her daughter have been on opposite sides of the political spectrum for two elections now: Sarah Heidkamp, 28, came out of the conservative closet six years ago. But Christina Heidkamp is still shocked to hear her daughter’s newfound point of view. Two months ago, a disagreement over birth control laws escalated into a teary screaming match — Christina was horrified to hear that her daughter believes pharmacists should be able to refuse to distribute birth control if they choose.

"I just couldn't believe it was her that was saying that,” says Christina Heidkamp, who’s 60 and lives in Chicago. “It was frustrating — I just felt like she was saying things and I didn't understand where she was coming from."

Faced with a daughter whose political views are opposite her own, a mom may feel like her kid is rejecting everything she worked so hard to teach, says Kaslow, the Emory University psychologist.

“Some moms might think, ‘Where did I fail? Where did I go wrong? How did I screw this up?” she says, adding that the closeness of the mother-daughter bond can make that relationship potentially explosive, especially compared to other relationships in the family.

And especially in a heated election like this one, politics can become a symbol of identity for some people, Kaslow says. An insult to a preferred candidate can feel like a personal attack.

When Palin hit the national scene in August, conservative Sarah Heidkamp immediately called her liberal mother.

“I called my mom all excited, especially because it's a woman appointee, and I said, ‘Mom, can you believe it? This is the greatest news!’ and my mother actually says, ‘What kind of education does she have? A BA?’” says Sarah Heidkamp, who lives in San Francisco and has a bachelor's degree, but not the master's degree her mom is pursuing now.

“It almost pierced my heart. My mother seems to think you have to have this elitist degree … It’s like she’s looking down on me, because I’m not educated enough.”

Comments like that, Sarah says, make her feel like her mother still sees her as a child. “It’s like she thinks I’m just inexperienced, and as I grow older that'll change” to be more like her mom, she says.

One key to keeping the peace: If conversations get too heated too often, it’s OK to decide that politics is off-limits. “I don’t think that about most disagreements about mothers and daughters, but about politics, I actually think it is a legitimate decision to make,” Kaslow says.

That’s what 28-year-old Sarah Crisman and her mother, 47-year-old Barb Granados, decided to do. Although she’s an Obama-maniac, Crisman was so reluctant to bring up politics that when she started volunteering in Dallas for the Obama campaign, she hid it from her mother for two months. When she finally got up the nerve to tell her mom, “I can't say I didn't roll my eyes,” Granados says.

As for moms, when there’s no understanding their daughter’s political views, it's best to remember that raising an independent woman who thinks for herself is a sign of successful parenting, Kaslow says. Granados admits that she strayed from her own parents’ political views as a teenager. Now she’s sandwiched between her mother and her daughter, two Democrats, and she’s proud of her daughter for being so involved in local campaign efforts and for being so excited.

"We've grown really close this year, and it was because we need each other, we respect each other, even though we disagree," says Granados. "My love for her has nothing to do with our differences; we're family and we're always going to be family."

Granados sighs. "Even if she's in Obama gear head to toe."

Let me just remind the McCain readers that the last time this country had a surplus was with the "spread the wealth" democrats under Clinton.

Hopefully Obama will bring us back to a surplus some day again.

A surplus with Clinton  ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha  Remember Hillary's communist health care plan?  If that had gotten through it would make the Wall Street debacle look like chicken feed.  Obviously you don't remember who held Clinton's feet to the fire.

Yes a surplus of 3 Trillion dollars from B. Clinton ,and what did we get in return from the Republicans. Just the lose of that 3 Trillion dollars and the largest DEFICIT in the history of the United States of America. Communist Health Care. You still don't get it do you?? You still can't see that the majority of Americans are not listening to the Republican spin attacks being used by all of you of grossly uninformed. Don't you hear the nays to the Attacks, many of them from the Republican Party members of both from the Domestic side and the Congressional side. Even your buddy Carl Rove said McCain went to far. Wake up and smell the stink of an old senile hawk and aging man  of the past and his barbie doll airhead that did not know of domestic or International issues outside of Alaska, until chosen by McCain in a last ditch pick to bolster up his campaign in a manner he himself could not do(If he had chosen that turncoat Joe Lieberman, he might have had a chance). So now he has got the other side just where he wants them??? You and he MUST BE KIDDING, RIGHT?

as far as the clinton "surplus" goes.  if you make $100.00 a week, borrow $20.00 from mommy, then only end up spending $110.00, , you DON'T have a $10.00 surplus for the week. pay back the I.O.U's put in the social security trust fund during the clinton "surplus" years, and guess what.......deficits every year, just like every other year.

sorry i'm off topic, but someone just had to bring up the "surplus" lol

just to get on topic, since you had to read that.....politics and relidgion should never be discussed with friends or family.

                  WILDWONDERFUL(In your dreams)!!

I am an Obama voter and I rely on my own self for maintinance and support. I am 71 yrs old and just working a measly job (had to come out of retirement due to the Republican failed policies of GWB). making $8.55 per hr(after 3yrs on the job)and collecting from Social Security that I paid into since I was a teenager with a job and amount of $905.00 per month, went from having $6000.00 in checking account, to now having

                  Regular Checking-9234 $13,314.17

                  Custom Savings-4235 $415.41

                  Balance Rewards MM-9093 $40,075.47

I accomplished this on my own in three years by living within my means, dictated by my earnings and not by living on any type of credit. If I can afford it and want it, then I can have it. You know everybody that votes of Obama is not on the dole. There are millions of us out here that have no subsides and we don't anticipate any in the future. But of course I should explain that there is only myself to take care of, plus my dog, normal monthly payments, home only a balance of $6000.00 and change. And yes I definitely pay taxes and I would have like to have  had some input on where they go, such as the Bailout that is going to have to be paid by me, my children and their children and YOU. And if you think this is all of it, the worse is yet to come>Yes both candidates voted for the bailout, which is severally flawed.  The Financial Industry put us in this mess for greed of the all Mighty Buck. Now every business big and small has their hands out. And you begrudge the American People being helped out with their own money? It gives the key to the hen house that already they cleaned out the majority of our savings, now we build them another hen house so they can feed on us some more, and with no one getting the blame and prosecuted or incarcerated for their fraud of the American People.

Where you people are really going to cry if McCain is elected. Social Security will not be there for you when your retirement time arrives(something you are paying for but will never get) or healthcare either. Can you imagine, McCain wants to tax you Medical benefits? When us baby boomers retire there will be another raise in Income taxes with McCain at the controls. That is if there is anything left over from all the wars we are now in and expected to be in. Wake up!!  We should not have to rely on Other countries to pay our bills or our wars. Where do you think we will be if a Certain Country stop picking up our debt? The whole country will be on Government subsidies if there are any!!

You give an estimae of that cost, and don't cite the $4200.00 stated by McCain, thatis a low figure, and you still don't get it do you? Trickle down has never worked since first proposed by Reagan. Have you seen it work since then? Right NO WAY!

Well, I would like my parents to continue to get Medicare and Social Security; the whole family certainly has contributed to the funds.

I would like to see the government invest in infrastructure vital to the future of our country rather than overseas wars that in no way protect our country and seem to be doing nothing to set us back.  Investing in returning jobs to our country, education to build a strong work force, regulation to prevent poisons in our foods and medicines and theft of our 401 k and other savings, and other things to give us all a better future would be good, also.

Meanwhile, as the logic professors say, ALL or Nothing statements are the ones that are usually false.  Most of our income goes to taxes and I expect them to rise no matter who wins this election.  That is hardly looking for something free from someone else.

I find it quite unusual that nobody is picking up that it was the femi-nazi's who supported Hilary Clinton.  If they truly were ideological supporters, then why in the world would they then vote for McCain?  Just because their femi-Nazi standard bearer lost?  That shows that they viewed Hilary Clinton as suitable for her gender, first and foremost; not her intellectualism or her politics.  I honestly don't know what Clinton said or promised these femi-nazi's.  Notice that almost all the hardcore Hilary supporters are anti-male in some way or shape.  Why hasn't their politics of gender hatred been discussed?  Oh, that's right....it's impolite to point out Femi-Nazism.  Why is Feminism acceptable, but Masculinism not?  Interesting that Obama is considered satan by these ultra-radical Femi-Nazis.  That alone tells me there's something to this guy--even though there's no chance I'll vote for him (or McCain either, for that matter).  Cynthia McKinney.....here's my vote!  I find it amazing that the femi-nazi's will vote for McCain over McKinney......what is the issue here.....is it race?  McKinney and Obama are black.....are the Femi-nazi's overwhelmingly entitled baby boomer white women?  Hmm....ya think?  Thank-god their influence is waning......

why the chinese will rule the world. the #1 reason. thay respect the older members of there familys and listen to there advice and no what they say should be respected. also they are honored with family's being very close. now we have the usa who since the 60's laugh at what they  say and dismiss as old foggies . where people cant wait to get out of there house and away from there parents. if you notice the asian immagrents which make up a little more than 13% are more educated more financially well off learn english and never cry about how bad life is. they stay within families. since before and after ww2 they have been the most productive ethnic minority in america. they never ask for goverment help like we americans do. with johnsons expantion of welfare. we have produced generations of whites and blacks who expect the rest of america to pay them for not working and giving them more when they have more babies. before the 60's it was shameful to accept the goverment money. now they expect it all the time with very little shame and almost like they think they earned. this will be america under osama. he is carter redux. who offers 15% unemployment, wellover 14% inflation. most of these kids tody have no clue of the 70's let alone what there families had to go thru. please mothers fathers of the 70's explain this to your kids. before they bring it back. my children understand it. what the schools would not touch we sat down as a family and explained the history and who caused what. they teach there children what we taught them. being taught they go out and search comments and check them selves for the truth not a biased reading from tv or newspaper. tha is why all my kids are republicams. we are no obots and believe what ever this guy says. if he gets in its the 70's renewal force.

The Chinese rule the world?  Come on, they are still considered a Communist country, even though they have relaxed those "rules", to foster competition.  They still mandate one child - because they cannot adequately sustain their enormous population.  They put country people in dorms and work them in factories 6 days a week. They have horrendous pollution and poverty.Americans of Chinese descent are not China.  And yes, many Asian Americans do well - 58% of Asian Indians get at least a bachelors degree (only about 30% tops of the overall population make it), Japanese Americans also are known to value education highly, like those of Chinese ancestry.  Koreans, they are known to try to at least send their kids here to a relative's, to get some American education/ English exposure.

Parents need to impress upon their kids that they need an education, which may be hard if the parent never got one.  We have programs for those kids, here in Cali, of what ever color.  The issue is poverty, education - or the lack thereof, and being able to support one's self well in some GOOD job.  Sadly, the jobs that would support a family just keep going away. Not always is the parent "right" - in fact, the teachers know where their difficult kids get their antics when mom and dad come in for the conference, 9 out of 10 times.Hopefully, Obama/Biden will bring some sanity back to the White House.

Evidently the Chinese have no dementia, Alzheimers, hardening of the arteries, etc.  Bully for them.  Rule the world, I doubt it.

If you really read the article, it is NOT about Trends, it is about where they stand on the issues.

Karen and Kristen Ingraham: First it shows that both are for HRC. Then when Obama defeated HRC. The daughter continues to show her loyalty to the Democratic Party, mainly because the platforms of HRC and Obama were basically the same. The big difference they spoke of was: HRC on Obama: He doesn't have the experience to be Commander in Chief. HRC on herself: I am ready to be Commander in Chief from day one. The voting public decided in favor of Obama. After he forced HRC to defend states to the degree that she ended up broke and in debt. Something McCain campaign should have taken notice of, since they had all that time to witness the primaries unchallenged. But they disregarded that and now Obama is forcing McCain the same way, making him defend what was thought to be automatic winning states for the Republican Party, and pulling out of others on financial reasons. Brilliant Strategy really shows which is ready to be Commander in Chief, wouldn't you say??

Now, enters John McCain's pick for VP. The mother quickly jumps over to the Republican side, and clearly shows that she was just voting for HRC and  Palin on the basis of gender and not on the issues. The daughter stays with Obama and the Democrats because she is voting on the issues and not on gender only, mainly shown by knowing that HRC and Obama's messages were basically the same from the beginning. Their main objection of each other was only who was ready to be Commander in Chief.  As above the Voting Public will make that decision again. And by the influx of HRC supporters over to Obama's ticket, I can honestly say that they in majority have made that choice, along with the Millions of voters and supporters, who are not only voting on the issues, but with their dollars. Especially in these hard times. what does that tell you about who the Voting Pubic is for??

While you are pondering the above. Check out all the Electoral Maps and see WHO the Voting Public really wants, based on the issues and not on gender or race. END OF STORY!!

This just shows that your predisposition determines your analysis.
Actually, as the primary race progressed, Hillary's message about Obama started to sink in and he had more and more difficulty. In fact, he limped (stumbled) over the finish line. My take is that the Mom figured it out and would not vote for Obama based on Hillary's arguments that he was not qualified. The daughter didn't.  Hillary changed her tune after Obama got the nomination to protect her position in the party. Was she lying then or is she lying now?
As far as the reason she changed sides it could be that she believes Obama's welfare program disguised and mislabeled as a tax cut will be as bad for the country as Lyndon Johnson's great society programs. Based on information in this article, your explanation and my explanation are equally plausible.
Since you're checking maps, check out 2000 and 2004 polls to see how accurate, or rather, hoe inaccurate those were.

Yeah, what about that whole "both for HRC" thing.  Were they both for HRC  because they liked her stance on the issues or were they just trying to be part of the girl's club?  To vote for McCain because Hillary didn't make the cut is kind of childish unless of course you agree with him on the issues.  Her views and McCain's couldn't be more different.  For a woman to vote for McCain because Palin is on the ticket and for that reason only is childish as well.  Use your brain's ladies!

Amazing, I was just feeling this way about my mom. I'd always voted Republication because I was raised that way, but based on the policies of each candidate there was no way I could vote for McCain. Good to know I'm the only one who was taking a personal hit when I learned of our differences in political choice.

Teaching respectful discourse and tolerance of others' viewpoints begins at home. Evidently this was not taught in these households. I hold the adults responsible for their children's inability to have a respectfull conversation. If the kids are able to respectfully disagree with thoughtful debate, shame on the parents who do not hear them out in a respectful fashion.

If this story had been written about fathers and daughters, or fathers and sons, would it have been headlined "In daddy-daughter disputes..." or "In dada-son disputes...?"  No, it likely wouldn't have.  Please show mothers the same respect.  Calling it a "mama-daughter" dispute is disrespectful and overly familiar.  It's bad enough that talk shows and pop culture are riddled with dismissive references to motherhood (and women in general) - no need to reinforce it in the headlines to your article (and, which you may not have intended, set the expectation that your content was more Ricki Lake-appropriate than newsworthy by extension).

I can relate to this, only I'm a man and my wife and I are having the problem. It's been each side point-counterpointing each other and has become very heated at times, always escalating from her end when she starts taking things personally (and no, there is no name-calling or anything like that, its because I can't see the "light"). The main problem: Because of the deregulation of big business and the crappy economy, which in Indiana was allready starting to show that something was up in Spring 2007, I have had to take a job in South Korea, away from my wife, house, and children. I totally resent it as well as the lies that got us into Iraq. She, on the otherhand, is a devoted churchgoer and gets all those newsletters and watches Fox News that are always claiming every single rumor about Obama and she is literally "going crazy" (her words) about how the country will be destroyed if he wins. So now, hell, not only am I not saying another word about it again, but am torn myself. If my candidate wins, I'll feel better about my country, but if that happens, who knows what's going to happen on the family front back home. Will she always resent me? Will she go absolutely nuts in despair? Like being 8,000 miles from home isn't enough sh*t to deal with, right? Anyway, what ticks me off the most is the media and candidates ability to lie, manipulate, and mislead the American people. All these rumors against Obama are either true or false and should not be used for political purposes. Investigate and report the truth, period! A lie is a lie and to keep throwing them to win an election is deplorable and in a way, falsify and distort our election process. This practice should be stopped and hopefully in 2012, things will change. My point is, these family "splits" are caused mainy by corporations trying to sway the vote to whom they want - they are the cause of the issue. As for the mother-daughter split in the article, they were both for H. Clinton, which brought them close, but now one has gone Republican. Seems that the daughter's the problem, since both of those parties have completely different agendas, shes only voting Republican because of Palin being a woman. Sounds like she has no real clue about politics at all. The sad thing is, I know several women who have said, "I was a "Hillary Girl", but now that she's out, I'm going with Sarah". (like they're best buds). Sorry, to me that is just bizarre!

I think most you have missed the point of the article but, I digress...I find it interesting as has been the case with people on the street that I talk to or for that matter co-workers in the office...by in large white women/if not just white people in general...who were hardcore for Hillary (Clinton of course) but won't vote for Barrack Obama? What gives? Their politics did mirror each other, did they not? Therefore, deductive logic would dicatate, that if you'd be willing to vote for one...you'd vote for the other, right? Well for a lot of older people as the article would suggest...that pill of voting for someone who maintains the same ideals albeit in the form of a black man is hard to swallow to the extent of...they'd rather vote someone: 1) who is white, 2) whose politics are just the opposite of their's and/or Hillary's and dare I say Obama's, 3) in the case of women kind (i.e.: Sarah Palin), and 4) someone who is clearly outclassed in this class of '08 canindates (and yes I do mean Sarah Palin). Kudos and props to those offspring and youngsters whether you vote Obama or McCain could on their on fruition step out of the shadow of mommy and think on their own. Me: Obama all the way, baby!

What is killing the Republican party is the sexist media.  Do you honestly think if Joe Biden was a mayor and governor of a state for two years that they would be giving him a hard time for lack of experience.  Heck no, because he is a man they would think he has all the experience in the world.  As a woman I have found it disgraceful how the media has been so sexist and unfair to Palin.  Just because she is a woman they are attacking her from every angle.  The media has showed me that women are a second or third rate citizen.  Women in this nation are treated worse than any minority group.  Us women need to show the world that we will not put up with this type of sexism.  The only thing is the majority of women will not vote for a woman.  It already happened with Obama beating out Hillary.  I really wanted to vote for Hillary!  The thing that stinks is what is holding us women back is actually ourselves when we do not vote for a woman.

But don't vote for McCain/Palin because Palin is a women. vote based on policies and who you think can lead this country the right way. Or else your as bad as all people voting for Obama because he is black.
