It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Karen and Kristen Ingraham, who’ve always been more BFF than mother and daughter, were united in their rabid support of Sen. Hillary Clinton. But when it became clear that Sen. Barack Obama had clinched the Democratic nomination, mom headed right — but daughter stayed left.
"Since Kristen was born, it's always been ‘Just you and me, kid.’ She finishes my sentences,” says single mom Karen Ingraham, who’s 55 and lives in Baltimore. “We've never had an argument about anything important — maybe about a $100 dollar pair of blue jeans. It's just shocking."
During one of the most heated presidential elections in this country’s history, party lines are being drawn among loved ones of every kind — couples, friends and family members — including that close-but-often-contentious relationship: mothers and daughters.
For mothers and daughters, fights over the political often feel very personal, particularly in an election with a woman GOP vice presidential candidate and following a tight race where a female was a finalist for the Democratic nomination.
On top of that, if this is the only the first or second time a daughter has been old enough to vote in a presidential election, she and her mom are still new at navigating the dicey terrain of political disagreements.
Generational divides are evident in certain election polls. Young voters favor Barack Obama over John McCain 59 percent to 38 percent, according to the latest Gallup data. Voters 65 and older are more evenly divided, with 45 percent for Obama and 43 percent for McCain. Among women overall, there's a big gap between the 54 percent who support Obama and the 39 percent who choose McCain.
Within those numbers are likely countless mother-daughter duos polarized by political preference — and surprised at the impact on their connection.
“Women tend to be more intense about relationships, they tend to prioritize relationships more,” says Nadine Kaslow, an Emory University psychologist. “Even if you think of female relationships in elementary school or the professional world, the women are often more intense about it than the guys are.”
That intensity and closeness also often means moms and daughters know exactly how to push each other’s buttons.
"It's kind of depressing, because she says things that zing," mother Karen Ingraham says. “She says, ‘Every time I look at (McCain), all I see is old. He's just old, mom.’ I go, well, I'm getting old!’”
It’s arguments like that that make her 26-year-old daughter want to scream. “It's almost like, you know, she's being tricked!” says Kristen Ingraham, who lives in Boston. “And you want to point it out to her — you want to shake her and say, 'You're falling for it!' — but you can't say that, 'cause it's your mother!"
They both accuse each other of the same thing: “She’s so headstrong!”
“She used to be really good at seeing both sides — but that's probably because we've always been on the same side," Karen Ingraham says.
Christina Heidkamp and her daughter have been on opposite sides of the political spectrum for two elections now: Sarah Heidkamp, 28, came out of the conservative closet six years ago. But Christina Heidkamp is still shocked to hear her daughter’s newfound point of view. Two months ago, a disagreement over birth control laws escalated into a teary screaming match — Christina was horrified to hear that her daughter believes pharmacists should be able to refuse to distribute birth control if they choose.
"I just couldn't believe it was her that was saying that,” says Christina Heidkamp, who’s 60 and lives in Chicago. “It was frustrating — I just felt like she was saying things and I didn't understand where she was coming from."
Faced with a daughter whose political views are opposite her own, a mom may feel like her kid is rejecting everything she worked so hard to teach, says Kaslow, the Emory University psychologist.
“Some moms might think, ‘Where did I fail? Where did I go wrong? How did I screw this up?” she says, adding that the closeness of the mother-daughter bond can make that relationship potentially explosive, especially compared to other relationships in the family.
And especially in a heated election like this one, politics can become a symbol of identity for some people, Kaslow says. An insult to a preferred candidate can feel like a personal attack.
When Palin hit the national scene in August, conservative Sarah Heidkamp immediately called her liberal mother.
“I called my mom all excited, especially because it's a woman appointee, and I said, ‘Mom, can you believe it? This is the greatest news!’ and my mother actually says, ‘What kind of education does she have? A BA?’” says Sarah Heidkamp, who lives in San Francisco and has a bachelor's degree, but not the master's degree her mom is pursuing now.
“It almost pierced my heart. My mother seems to think you have to have this elitist degree … It’s like she’s looking down on me, because I’m not educated enough.”
Comments like that, Sarah says, make her feel like her mother still sees her as a child. “It’s like she thinks I’m just inexperienced, and as I grow older that'll change” to be more like her mom, she says.
One key to keeping the peace: If conversations get too heated too often, it’s OK to decide that politics is off-limits. “I don’t think that about most disagreements about mothers and daughters, but about politics, I actually think it is a legitimate decision to make,” Kaslow says.
That’s what 28-year-old Sarah Crisman and her mother, 47-year-old Barb Granados, decided to do. Although she’s an Obama-maniac, Crisman was so reluctant to bring up politics that when she started volunteering in Dallas for the Obama campaign, she hid it from her mother for two months. When she finally got up the nerve to tell her mom, “I can't say I didn't roll my eyes,” Granados says.
As for moms, when there’s no understanding their daughter’s political views, it's best to remember that raising an independent woman who thinks for herself is a sign of successful parenting, Kaslow says. Granados admits that she strayed from her own parents’ political views as a teenager. Now she’s sandwiched between her mother and her daughter, two Democrats, and she’s proud of her daughter for being so involved in local campaign efforts and for being so excited.
"We've grown really close this year, and it was because we need each other, we respect each other, even though we disagree," says Granados. "My love for her has nothing to do with our differences; we're family and we're always going to be family."
Granados sighs. "Even if she's in Obama gear head to toe."
My only comment is, why is this anecdotal information worthy of print? If MSNBC hasn't got anything more Newsworthy than two people from the same family having different political views, is it any wonder their ratings are on rock bottom?
It illustrates how divisive this election is becoming...and people on both sides aren't helping.
Based on what I've seen from the more rabid supporters on both sides, everyone in this country is either...:
1.) ...an unpatriotic anti-American elitist educated snob who wants to raise taxes, kill babies and sell America to foreigners while robbing the rich and giving it to lazy slobs...
2.) ...a gun-toting, Bible-thumping, nascar loving racist xenophobic homophobe who supports nation building to plunder small countries while giving the international community the finger.
It's this whole Us vs Them mentality that's making this so heated, since it's so much easier to hate someone because you think they're flawed, not because they have a point. Either way, I cannot *wait* for this election to be over.
Good for you Arad the younger people are more ideological the older are more practical there in lies one of the reasons.. The other, younger people are more open to race issues the older not as open so what will we do.? We have not only race issues but age issues her in the US. Life is so petty that we admire young airheads more than older skilled intelligent people. our country is flawed people badly flawed.
What I thought interesting was, the mother was getting her graduate degree and felt superior to her daughter, who only had a BA. The irony is, Mac only went to the Naval Academy based upon a legacy appointment, which translates, he only got into the academy because his granpa went to the academy. And, Mac finished 4th from the bottom of his graduating class, which threw him outta the chain of command loop in the Navy and indicated, based upon this alone, Mac would never have made admiral. Indeed, within the Navy, Mac was a joke and a loser. Also, it is expected, if the individual wishes to climb the chain of command in the Navy, he also receives a graduate degree, and Mac flopped on this as well.
Conversely, Obama graduated at the top of his class at Harvard law school and was a magna cum laude graduate. And, the Naval Academy is no Harvard. Face it, Mac is no Senator Obama.
And fox nonews covers serious stuff!!!!!!
White trash, have you attended a military academy? There is no comparison. You're not required to stand watch (at all hours), prep uniforms, participate in weekly drills, AM military trainings, have inspections, lead a division or department at Harvard. You're not required to participate in sports, take biannual fitness tests, attend mandatory military lectures and sporting events, and spend your summers training at Harvard. Degree programs at academies consist of 15+ credit hours per semester and are quite rigid (all degrees must be completed in 4 years). Don't forget honor issues. The Naval Academy pushes ethics and character too. You try having a top GPA with all of that. You're right about one thing, the Naval Academy is no Harvard.
Meanwhile...................back in reality.
Obama wants to crush capitalism!
Not even a mention of "spreading the wealth"?
This is MSNBC's excuse for a story, when most people are discussing the potential of Obama changing our very way of life?
There is something very very wrong with this "news source"!
White Trash,
I didn't take the article as saying the mother who was getting her graduate degree felt superior to her daughter but that the DAUGHTER thought that is how her mother felt - I took it that the mother probably was saying we need smart, educated people as president and VP - that we should want someone SMARTER than we are in those positions. I took it that education for the VP and President didn't matter so much to the daughter that a BA, like she was getting, was good enough. I tend to agree with the mom on this one based on my reading.
Having many pieces of paper on one's wall does not make one educated or smart. I have a BS and a JD, my husband a BS and a BA. I can tell you he is much smarter than me, despite being "less educated".
EMC, all that proves is McCain is qualified to do what? Prep uniforms and do drills. Not something we need in a president.
Ah white trash, the naval academy is considered an ivy league school so its matches harvard. In fact as EMC pointed out its actually tougher then harvard. You should also know class rank does matter on whether or not someone even becomes an admiral.
Okay if that comparison stands. McCain still finished at the bottom while Obama graduated Magna Cum Laude.
Forgive me I made a slip up, I meant to say that class rank does not matter on whether or not someone even becomes an admiral. Ya but you also have to tiger remember that low class rank was caused more by conflict with higher-ranking personnel rather then low academics. You also have to remember that in general naval academy is more difficult then harvard.
You know its funny too how everyone likes oh low class rank and obama did better but everyone forgets that George bush had a better GPA then John Kerry and also had a better Class rank then john kerry and everyone thought john kerry should have won, even though John kerry and George bush went to ivy league schools.
Mccain will spread the wealth. That is to Chet the CEO for the last eight years. Tax break for the rich and no one else. Mccain offers the same but the funny thing is most rich love Obama. But Mccain will help people out and this is how. He will buy bad mortgages, making Chip the banking CEO wealthy, and those that can not afford to pay their mortgages will now have the tax payers to help them out. Why work! Oh, and their kids can go to private school on a vouchers while the working people's kids go to public school. And guess what they get 5,000 to buy some kind of insurance for themselves of course the kids will have to look elsewhere because 5,000 may cover the cheapest HMO for one person. Thanks Mccain. Roy, you are right Mccain will help out the middle class because they will quit their jobs to get the government to pay for everything. Of course the rich will still be happy with their tax break but wonder where all their workers went. I am signing up for unemployment today there is something to this Mccain thing.
There are a number of well known families like this....one example is the republican California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife Maria Kennedy Shriver.........another is the war room Clinton Campaign leader James Carville and his Republican wife Mary Matlin.
This is nothing and some of the strongest families have political differences.
Chris Mathews or K Olberman will try make it an anti McCain issue
the real issue, the governor of California is a Republican on paper only. He does not hold true to the Republican platform. He says one thing to make Republicans have confidence in him then he turns around and acts like a Democrat. I am a Californian, so I am experiencing this first hand.
In this article I noticed that the mother's and daughter's were true to their party in beliefs.
"...stand watch (at all hours), prep uniforms, participate in weekly drills, AM military trainings, have inspections, lead a division or department at Harvard. You're not required to participate in sports, take biannual fitness tests, attend mandatory military lectures and sporting events, and spend your summers training at Harvard. The Naval Academy pushes ethics and character too. You try having a top GPA with all of that. You're right about one thing, the Naval Academy is no Harvard."
Good thing, at least Obama doesn't have to admit he graduated at the bottom of his class like Johnny-boy...894 out of 899.
I was raised by Republicans. I am an Independent. I vote issues not party but this time I am going with my mom on the voting issue and voting for McCain. I have some issues with McCain but I have TONS of issues with Obama. I mean Obama will do nothing but raise out taxes, and by we I mean the middle class. Obama has a record of voting for tax increases only and by that voting record I mean when he voted anything other than "present". So a vote for Obama is a vote for higher taxes, period. When food and gas cost an insane amount of money I need the most out of my paycheck cause I got bills to pay and mouths to feed. Also Obama will either send jobs FLYING over seas or skyrocket inflation. So I beg of you to do what's best for the working class and not vote for Obama.
clint horace 1.6
President Obama won't have any capitalism to crush since the capitalists are doing a good job right now of crushing it themselves with our money.
I can't wait for the next knucklehead pol or businessperson to start in about the market this or the market that. They're nothing but a bunch of welfare babies with big appetites for other people's money, yours and mine.
So much for a market driven economy.
And BO is no patriotic american.
I hear the definition of patriotism varies greatly.
Apparently it isnt just me but these people are so "unintelligent". You dont like McCain because he's old, Kristin? Maybe it takes someone that old to realize that there are more to politics than sex appeal. The Republican party seems to be learning that the hard way *cough*Palin*cough*. My point is that regardless of political views, both parties have there ups and downs (and thats why a two party system isn't beneficial) but the point is that either side have logical appeals depending on the person so its not like someone is wrong or stupid because they dont agree with you politically. Any ways, these people really have poor reasons for disagreeing with their family and even so why should I care about some people that are upset because their daughters dont believe in the same godly political parties. I'd hate to see what happened if they decided to broaden their lives and study another religion.
I would not tell my daughter Palin wasn't qualified because she doesn't have a masters degree. I know many great women who don't have any college degrees. However, not only does she not have the experience or understand the issues, but what really bothers me is the seductive manipulation. If a man went around saying "you betcha", winking, and saying things like I'm not going to answer the questions you're asking (like she did in the debate), we wouldn't even consider him. But it's ok for her!!! I WANT TO KNOW WHY. I feel that it does a disservice to women everywhere, portraying us as less than what we are capable of. So if you're voting for her because she's a women...THINK AGAIN!!!
I so second this statment. who says you guys have to print any insignificant thought you come out? you know the more useless stuff you have on your site the longer it takes to load so why not cut down on those useless stories?
Again I say and fox nonews does serious reporting. If you do not like MSNBC, do not watch it, Duhhhhhhhh!
FOX Noise, O' Reily, and Gelen Beck report "Economy doing great. Bailout promises to be a great investment. War in Iraq still has no casualties."
I am sorry dal you don't know what your talking about why don't you try watching fox news before you trash it.. I am sorry that fox news asks both sides real questions that we should know about the people wanting to president.. You liberals start crying like babies anytime a real or hard question is asked of Obama.. I think the tape that came out today shows just how much we do not know about this man and yet most of the media outlets are so in love with him they ask no questions... When they do ask Obama attacks them just like West in Florida.. It made laugh the look on Bidens face when she started asking him tough question he looked like I'll dare to question this ticket..
PLEASE! I have watched FOX Noise, who employees Bush family members, for years covering Bush. My God if you can not hear them cut people off every time they talk bad about the Repubs then you are deaf. They also put a bright smile on failed Bush programs and there are many. McBush will be the same.
What? You need to watch a little more, and listen more carefully!
you should really enjoy fox noise in a couple weeks when McPalin will have their new show right after the other loserHuckabee.
Yet another example of Winston Churchill's brilliance. It was Churchill who said; "If you are under 30 and are not a liberal, you don't have a heart. If you are over 30 and are not a conservative, you don't have a brain"
Right on the money, again.
Being conservative doesn't mean having a lifelong contract to vote for Republicans. Republicans haven't been conservative the last eight years, and I don't hear McCain promoting any real fiscal conservative policies. He seems to think a few billion in earmarks are responsible for every financial woe we have. His running mate says she'll pay for autism research by cutting fruit fly research even though fruit fly research is autism research.
What did Churchill say about voting for morons?
He said "You can always trust Americans to do the right thing . . . after trying everything else."
After eight years of Republicans that sounds about right.
The problem with the current Republicans is not that they claim to be Republicans. The problem is that they are NOT Republicans.
It's the same problem that some (former) Democrats are having with the Democrat party: they feel it has moved too far left.
Amen, my grandfather and grama were devote Repubs for 30 years. They get invited to the White House for Bush events and are always receiving Repub mail. This year they voted Obama.
Your grandparents are probably suffering from memory loss it would be well advised to make an appointment with the neurologist for them. Lets look back at a few democrats Lyndon Johnson left a war he could not handle. Jimmy Carter left with hostages he could not free. Ross Perot could be he couldn't. Finally Bill Clinton left impeached and ignoring terrorism. Remember the first attack on the World Trade Center?
Tappy, I am over 30 (by 11 years) and am proud to say I am a fiscal conservative, but socially liberal person. I had been a life-long Repub, even having worked on the staff of a NY State Assemblyman, who was, at the time, Assistant Minority Whip for the Repubs. However, after the stunt Bush and Rove pulled on McCain in SC, with the whole "black baby" whisper campaign, I left the party. I can't bring myself to support McCain this time around, as I truly believe he has lost his mind to senility, dementia, Alzheimer's or some combination of those. The US needs change from the past, and Obama is the only real chance at it (I'd vote Civil Libertarian or Green Party if either stood a chance of winning, but let's be serious, they have no chance). Plus I live in a swing State, so my vote matters.
White trash...there are no "legacy appointments" to the Naval Academy. Amazing the stuff people make up
Your grandparents are probably suffering from memory loss it would be well advised to make an appointment with the neurologist for them.
I don't know . . . . . I think his grandparents are fine. You seem to be the one with short term memory loss . . . . say, the last eight years, which featured more graft, corruption and studipity than all those incidents you site combined. You should really get that checked.
Why do you not stick your head in a Mccain Rally Bag.
Sadly many parents seem to feel they somehow own the thoughts and opinions of their kids---and forget that these kids are individuals and thier MINDS are not property. These parents may get away with it for a long time as the kids are young, but the lucky ones get out, and hopefully form an identity of their own. Otherwise, generation after generations would stay exactly the same.
Thanks I was waiting for something intelligent instead of the same old my views are better than yours comments or the same of racist whether left of right comment. This is about children not being the way their parents are and it's ok. So what if they don't agree with you and have a mind of their own. So what if maybe they don't want to hold on to racist views or attitudes. Most people went so called right when Hillary didn't win simply because Obama isn't white and just maybe if their friends found out they may not be liked or accepted any longer. This shouldn't be about whether one went to Harvard or any Military School, who gives a crap. MOst of the other Pres went to so called great Universities and what have we gotten. Screwed that's what. I know if we are simple going to vote for someone because I don't want to vote for the Black guy that's stupid. If we are not going to vote for the other guy because he is old and military minded that too is stupid. We need to forget all the bs and vote for the real best candidate no matter who you think that is. Now if that means it's to keep things as we've had for the past eight years then that's totally insane.
Props 2000, please provide documentation PROVING, your accusations that individuals who chose not to vote for Obama was because he isn't white.Comments like this are what incites racism. You do have some very valid points about choosing a candidate to vote for. If we want to change things up then we need to start by changing out some of those liberal democrats who are controlling the senate and congress.
I can't escape the feeling that there is something kind of insulting here. I'm a man, so perhaps I just don't get it, but this seems overly cutesy. It's like this could just as easily be an article about hair conditioner, or whether it's ok for girls to ask boys to the high school dance. Seriously, I don't know any women who sound this shallow. Perhaps it's the sugary sweet labels (BFF, Obama-maniac), or the fact that the opening pararaph equates a woman's choice of candidate with a woman's choice of pants. Maybe I'm over-reacting to a fluff piece, but in a year in which we truly are watching women's history being made, it seems misguided to minimalize women by making them sound so juvenile.
Colin you are correct! Almost all of the folks commenting here thinks this article is pure crap!
I agree. It must have been a slow news day.
So, what are we all doing here?
You raised your kids to be moral and independent thinkers, not to mimic or shadow your views. Grow up.
White bread will always be white bread, ignorance, racism and fear of social equality and loss of the status quo rule stale white bread. Let us not be hypocritical, education is the answer and the direction and quit trying to quote old, dead, biased white brittish snobs. What happen edto the ideals that "hillary" stood for and you with her, they are more similar to Obama's. Weak pitiful people, if I can't be quaterback\, I'm taking my ball and go home (then I'll call the other team and give up all the secrets to success) Please take time for personal reflection and intro-spection.
You choose what you read? Just like you choose who you vote for and why? We all get to choose what we do, say, write and think. That is call Freedom. So if you don't want to read something DON'T. Don't blame the writter like you blame the liberals!
You raised your kids to be moral and independent thinkers. Grow up.
You are absolutely right!! My mom and I were County officers in the same county for several years. She was the Democrat Vice Chairman and I was the Republican Chairman. I stepped down to raise my kids, but still put time in on various campaigns. We agree to disagree. I have always told her that I was never raised Democrat! She laughs and we go on with business. We own a couple of business's together, she's the boss. Both of us have enjoyed meeting people from both parties. We really find it funny when we explain to people we are not from the same party, they get this "deer in the headlights look". As far as family dinners, like I said before,"We agree to disagree." No big deal.
Why is it useless to write this story. This election is not just politics. It has very underlying emotions that are at the very core of peoples beliefs on both sides. We all have opinions and this election is not only bringing issues up, it has so much controversy surrounding core values of society as a whole. My State, my work and my family are all divided and there are very touchy subjects in this election that has peoples feathers ruffled. I can feel it here. There is and unspoken silence with my neighbors, co-workers, and even my own sister. This article is trying to show just how emotional this election has become and the strong positions of both sides, that even within families there is discord. It's about time we all got a little more passionate about our lives and our country and what we believe in.
I think it demonstrates how much the campaign of one of the fellows was designed to be as visceral and emotional as the finest phsycologists (my degree is not in spelling) and marketers could make it. Recall, one of these guys had enormous resources and was a media darling.
There is no arguing with emotions. This explains why his proponents become emotional, defensive and rude when one indicates favor for the other guy. One of these guys was marketed like an automobile or a movie. For the nation's sake let's pray to God he is not the Edsel many suspect he is.
What happened the first string of comments. There were about 65 of them and they all disappeared and now there's one. Well it's like i wrote the first time were being sold a flowed bill of goods with Obama. On the previose posts Wrk was right, neither party has truely qualified candidates but at least McCian is a Capitalist first, and as a small businessmen the last thing i want to be is taxed to death by a democrat congress and rubberstamp president like Obama. Look at his Kennedy written health care plan. He's going to offer it, everything for everybody, what ever you want, when ever, were ever. But then he never talks about the hidden costs that will be layed on our back. The younger generation doesn't understand the financial burdens coming with an Obama regime.
Like Wrk wrote he know BS, i have plenty of customers and salemen that are full of BS and yes Obamais all BS. He's a democrat (Johnson, Carter, Clinton) and Oh yes i'm a racist, at least that's what i've been call by a few local Obama supporters. So sad that in a land of freedom and liberty, i'm not allowed to practice it as i see fit.
sweaver,
I don't believe you are a racist you just simply are very set in your views and nothing is going to change you and people don't care what you believe. Now for you to attack the younger generation coming on I have a problem. I am 57 and very proud of the young people for getting involved in their own future. It is obvious people like you are not going to help them. It is also obvious the Bush and McCain plans or lack of plans are not going to help them. You said, " So sad that in a land of freedom and liberty, i'm not allowed to practice it as i see fit". You can, just get out of the way because progress will continue without you.
Unfortunately, we've got two of the worst candidates running for the Presidential election and we can only make one choice. Hopefully it will be the right one. We won't know for at least a year either way.
I can't help but think that if these are the best candidates we could come up with, then we're really screwed up.
I agree that both candidates stink. But the President is only one man. We should also be concerned about Congress and where it's headed.
But here is where I disagree with you: We are not screwed UNLESS we allow ourselves to be screwed. Remember We The People have the power. That is something that many have forgotten and that our so-called leaders are happy to have us forget.
The best thing we could do is organize and find a way to turn off the flow of revenue to DC. That would really send a message, short of all out war.
You're just realizing that we are screwed up??
Doom and gloom helps doesn't it?
why would anyone with intelligence or caring about their reputation want to be involved in politics in this country.... it has to be a genuine love of power or a real desire to punish yourself
I am very close to all 3 of my children & have raise them all very independant & to think for themselves. I have always & still do tell them to remember that whatever decision they make today, they will have to live with for the rest of their lives. So far they all 3 have made very wise decisions. One of the things we try not to discuss is politics while the other is religion. Makes for a very peaceful family gathering.
I agree with you...... my grandson's class had a mock voting forum in his class. Mind you he is only 9 years old. When other students found out he was voting for McCain he was verbally attacked by other students......He was shocked to be treated so badly....He has always been an independent thinker, which is good, and we have told him to keep being that way. Not to let others make him feel less of a person because you have a different view. Of course grandpa said that is the way liberals are, calling you names and attacking if you disagree with them. I say make up your on mind and do what is right for you, and do not worry about what other's think.
Pat,
You said,
"Of course grandpa said that is the way liberals are, calling you names and attacking if you disagree with them."
Did you mean names like, Socialist, terrorist, Marxist, liberal, elitist, corrupt, etc. Did those mean old liberals call McCain those names? I tell my kids to vote for who they believe is the best for the job regardless of the party.
Don't forget "babykilling, unpatriotic anti-American." : /
Me thinks grandson chose McCain because that is what he hears at home and it has nothing to do with being a free-thinker. Because he listens to what grandpa says.
And grampa is probably one of the free-thinkers who proudly calls himself a "ditto head" who hav e to wait each day until 1:00 to find out how to think. Fortunately Fox is fair and balanced since they praise neo-cons while at the same time criticizing liberals.
How does one be a good parent w/o discussing; nay pushing religion if the parent is religious to start with?
Same in my family, after Hillary was ambushed by the men in her own party, we have had a huge rent in my family also. I will vote for McCain/Palin and so is one of my daughters, however my two other daughters stayed with the Democrats. We don't talk about it anymore because it is just too hurtful for all of us. I do not see it changing any time soon, the way I see it no matter which one wins two of us will be unhappy and just waiting to say I told you so when times get tougher, as they surely will given the climate this election has been held in.
Times are going to get a little tougher regardless of who's elected, so hold off on the finger pointing. It took years for the financial crisis to boil, it won't be fixed overnight.
Neither candidate can fix this on his own; they'll need the help of their advisors. I don't trust McCain's advisors. Phil Gramm needs to start enjoying a happy retirement.
I STILL can't figure out why/how someone could support Hillary Clinton - who had even more liberal viewpoints on taxes/healthcare than obama, supports Roe v Wade etc. AND THEN turn and vote for McCain/Failin...who are polar opposites to everything HRC stands for. BS!
My mom and I have a truce too. She never would have voted for Hilery tho', dyed in the wool McCain fan (they are about the same age). I would not vote for any Republican this year, too mad about the economic mess. One thing she and I can agree on - Palin sucks.
Just would like you to know that the economic woes are caused by both parties. Clinton and the republican congress near the end of his presidency, but also Bush and the republican and democratic congresses during his presidency.
This article is a waste of bandwidth. But, that said, a Hillary supporter who switched to McCain after Obama won the nomination is a voter with no convictions whatsoever. The woman in this article supported Hillary for no other reason than the fact that Hillary was a woman. This voter is either simply very stupid, or she is very stupid and a racist.
Looks like the daughters still have a few lessons to learn from the wisdom of mom.
mamas like Joe's butt-crack, and younger women find it distasteful.
Likewise, old neo-con men dream of doing Palin while theyounger men actually do her.
neocon women would like to experiment but are scared.
Children think they know everything, but rarely do!!!
Actually, children know a lot more than they're given credit for. As for this story, both of these women are fully-grown adults.
That's why I said "rarely" instead of never.
I an certain Obama will take this election, so what positive thing can come of this?
It certainly wouldn't be the change the has been promised, at best we need change for the sake of change. What these naive kids are going to get is an education on what little they will get in return for their group hypnosis of this new messiah.
We need this to allign the younger generation that there is no eutopia at the end of anything political. You think we will all put racism aside, wrong! You think that Obama is going to pull the troops out, maybe, but at the sign of the first civil war type activity, Obama is going to get roasted! You think your daily grind of a job will get better, Hardly, as you still got that same jerk boss, same jerk coworkers, same gossip hens.
We still got the same representatives and senators that keep the same old system going, and that is not going to change.
If you spent as much energy in your own community as on this Hyped messiah, you would experience change you can see.
At the end of all this, we have Obama, and still the same crappy city council, still the same crappy school board, still the same crappy county officials, still the same crappy state reps, still the same crappy roads, still the same crappy bureaucracy and more of that to come.
So welcome my dream Obama, and welcome really nothing else new, and you silly kids, welcome to reality...
Ottawa... You make some excellent points though I do have to say that "hypnosis of this new messiah" reminds me of how America ran to Bush, not once, but twice. Now look at where we are.
I think it is a little disingenuous to refer to a badly needed change as a blind following of a Messiah.
A similar change occurred in UK. The conservatives under Margaret Thatcher ruled for 18 years and ended up being routed out of power for at least a generation.
Sometimes a change, any change is good. It clears the cobwebs out
You and I know that thought has to be put into why we need change and what that really means. We've been around the block, several times.
Disingenuous? I read my post again several times, I don't see that in there. Oh well. Trust me, I can be really Disingenuous when I want to be.
The "Blind following of this new Messiah" is actually a commentary on idealistic youths, perhaps you and I were that once, that are going to get a rude awakening to what change really is.
I however, am not going to go as far as saying that with Obama comming in that any cobwebs are going to get cleared at all.
Obama, whilst passing himself off as the new Messiah, knows how to navigate the haze of bureaucracy better than anyone I have ever seen. The speed of his rise shows that. If anything it shows me that he has the brain power to navigate on the world stage.
Saying that, at the end of the day, I still have to look at complete morons on my local city council arguing about 75000 square feet of new construction per year to reduce traffic. At the end of this, I still have to live with the morons that I can see.
I expect nothing from Obama to change my life for the better. With McCain, I know it will stay the same.
If We the People are tired of the same reps and Senators we CAN change the system. Thomas Jefferson wrote about this in the Declaration of Independence. The power lies with US! The government exists for US not the other way around. You don't have to live with the morons, none of us do, but that is exactly what those morons want you (and me) to believe!
If I can reject their rhetoric, then anyone can choose to do so.
Please, don't quote Thomas Jefferson! If he had his way, we would be a third world country, if one at all. I hardly will take words of a Slave owner, and Rapist, that write oh such nice words.
We need to get to where Alexander Hamilton wanted us to be. When morons vote, they vote for morons. Morons can only comprehend 20 seconds of a TV ad, and there they go.
We got that with Bush, and the ones voting for Obama are the same. The only saving grace is that I see hints of genius in Obama.
The speed of Obamas rise is almost entirely due to the media, his funny name, and the fact that he's black.
It certainly isn't due to his political prowess, though that is what we are supposed to believe.
And now, listening to him even closer in these last few weeks.................screw it, I'll say it...............I'm scared! The man is threatening to change our way of life, to satisfy HIS way of interpreting the constitution. He has the audacity to think he knows whats best for us, which happens to include taking money from people who earned it, and giving it to people who have less, or are too dependent on the government to bother to work for it.
This is an outrage!
Redistribution of wealth? What the hell does that mean?
How about WE get to decide whether or not we want to "spread our wealth".
It's called philanthropy! But to be forced to give our hard earned money to the government, so that they can give it to lazy bastards, makes my blood boil.
This is Obamas idea of "Change"!
ottawa-Same old crappy stuff if McCain wins too. who are you fooling?
You nailed it! Not to mention, if you go back and do some research, Obama was filled with hate and rhetoric, look at his past associations. He has a hidden agenda, if elected, everyone will eventually see what his change is all about. The young and naive, will not see what hit them. As far as healthcare reform, Canada has a socialist healthcare system, I wonder why many flock to the US to get medications that they can't get in Canada. Well, that won't work because we will be on a tickling list, if you're too sick to cure, then you fall at the end of the line. Scary stuff to think about. Our life, whether is good or bad, will change for the worse.
Response to "Who am I fooling", the short answer is You as you need to read what I posted.
My point, as it pertained to the article, was that the crappy stuff is not going to change. This will come to a big surprise to blind Obama supporters. I support Obama in this election, but I am quite aware of what I can expect.
My mother actually disowned my sister for her support of Bill Clinton. Very sad, but true! I have learned that politics are off limits in conversation with her. She will be VERY unhappy if/when Obama wins. (I CAN"T WAIT!)
Wow, trm - sounds like maybe your sister may have been ok with that - not that anyone could blame her. You are even happy to just spite her. Your mom needs to get a grip, sounds like my brother.
My wife and two of my three daughters are Obama supporters. One daughter and her husband are true right wing nuts. They listen to Bortz and Rush. Once while at a birthday party for one of my grandsons, at their house, I was ordered to leave because we had let a political argument get out of hand, and this was two years ago. We now keep a kind of truce however we did not put an Obama sign in our yard because we feared that they might not let the children come to our house. It is a horrible situation and we bite our lip rather than get in a fight. This started before the election and will continue, I fear, long after the election. My wife and I are JFK Liberals.
I served in the Marine Corps in the Sixties and one one of the bloggers on this website said I was a phony because "A Marine could never be a Democrat!" It is sad but children DO have power when they control your Grandchildren, and ours is not the only case.
Bill-476634,
Semper fi bud, well what can i say, this is an independant jarhead voting for soon to be president Obama too. The only real problem I have with him at this time is his voting yes for the "bailout" of the rich. The real "change" in this country will be when we finally have "term limits" in all of congress. How do u expect anything to get done when they are almost always on the campaign trail to get elected for the umpteenth time. Terms should be like the presidents, 2 terms and then your out (no need for the 10years provision as in the presidents). Until that happens you will get the same crap forever when the same people are in there term after term after term. Thats why I am an independant, there are as many crooks on both sides. It is a lot easier to weed them out if they cant constantly get voted back in by the guillable people in their districts. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
Thats a really sad story. If you have these sorts of problems, you have them without politics being the reason. I am sure your kid would use whatever means are convienient as it is an issue between you and them.
Got the same situation where a Brother-In-Law of mine is F**King over his Parents with his kids. Politics is the reason for this month, but next month it will be something else, as it was something else 6 months ago.
I am from Santa Monica, CA.
As far as signs go, McCain supports keep that secret, as their homes will be vandalized if they put those signs up. I wish I lived around moderate democrats and not these militant ones here.
Oh the Kennedy's are great crowd to draw to.
I cannot believe this is even close to being newsworthy - this article proves only that there is nothing left to report on in this election.
It is serious when it is your family. Do not watch MSNBC, watch nonews fox!
Very slow News Day!!!!!
Yeah, the market being down, again, over 3 digits - again - just doesn't have an impact any more.
Anyone who shared Hillary's views and is now voting for McSame(as Bush)..... well it screams of racism to me.
Is the 'mom' also anti "Socialism"? Did she teach her daughter to hoard her food, rather than share w/ a hungry child? Did she teach her daughter to hang onto her spare parka while another child was freezing?
Jesus was a Socialist. Jesus was kind and compassionate. McCain/Bush: More spreading of wealth than ever -- just to Kenneth Lay, Haliburton, Exxon Mobil, Dennis Koslowski, Richard Fuld..... Imperialism. But hey, I guess it feels good if you're on the 'money' side!
Kudos to daughter for being more of a true Patriot and American - more of a real 'team player' than mom.

When you are young, you vote with your heart. When you grow up, you vote with your brain... Some people never grow up... Too bad.
Thanks for the psychobabble. Get a grip.
