Todd: Hispanics could put Obama over the top

TON - If Barack Obama goes on to win the election, there will be plenty of ink and video spent on chronicling the historic nature of the turnout among young voters and African-Americans.

But as important as both constituencies have been to Obama — particularly in the primaries — it's Hispanics that could be putting him over the top on Nov. 4.

Obama's dominance among Hispanics in the West is proving to be the difference maker in Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico. In addition, the increased numbers of non-Cuban Hispanics in Florida, as well as the growing Hispanic population in North Carolina and Virginia, could be the tipping voting group in those three states.

So how did this happen? When this general election began, there were three pieces of evidence cited to develop the conventional wisdom that Obama would under-perform with Hispanics:

As it turns out, Clinton won the demographic because she courted them heavily and used Bill Clinton to campaign as a familiar advocate for Hispanics.

As for McCain, despite his best efforts (as well as that of President Bush and Karl Rove), the Republican brand has been tainted, potential for the long-term, due to the negative tone of the immigration debate that took place on conservative talk radio and in the presidential primaries.

In fact, McCain's immigration stance was so damaging that it is what nearly derailed his candidacy in mid-2007, not Iraq as the campaign sometimes likes to claim.

McCain ended up backing off a bit on his immigration stance. And to many Hispanics, it may have looked like McCain chose his party over his convictions on the issue.

As for Hispanics' willingness to vote for African-Americans, this was about as tested of a premise as the so-called "Bradley effect." Too many analysts went with their gut or with one example in one big city, rather than truly examining whether there was prejudice between Hispanics and blacks.

So here's what we know, Obama has held a strong lead among Hispanics for weeks. In our NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, we've been oversampling Hispanic voters all year so we could track this important demographic.

For weeks, Obama's been at 65 percent and McCain's hovered around 30 percent. If Obama nabs just 62 percent or better of Hispanics, he'll surpass the Gore total from 2000. And right now, he seems virtually assured of that.

Anything 65 percent or above for Obama probably locks in the three western battlegrounds of Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico, narrowing McCain's path to 270 that much more.

Could McCain have changed this? On paper, the answer is yes but in reality, maybe not. While the Arizona senator was careful to trumpet his immigration stance to Hispanic audiences, he rarely talked about it in other venues for fear of raising the ire of conservatives who had been riled up on the issue by talk radio.

McCain already has been down this road once before; He didn't want to do it again. But, long term, the GOP really does have a growth issue. As Karl Rove preached in 2006, the GOP cannot afford to start losing Hispanics by the margins they lose blacks.

In fact, take out Cubans and George Bush's over-performance among Texas Hispanics, and Obama could be getting close to making Hispanics — more or less — a base Democratic voting group.

The long term consequences of this Hispanic problem for the GOP isn't just about this electoral map, it's about its future in a number of states, most importantly Texas. At a 65-30 clip among Hispanics, or potentially a 70-30 ratio of winning Hispanics, Democrats could start to see Texas within reach by 2016.

There's no easy solution for Republicans. Wooing Hispanics is going to start with simply looking less scornful of immigrants. McCain never acted or looked scornfully at illegal immigrants, but the perception among Hispanics is that his party has.

In addition, the real opening for the GOP with Hispanics won't be with culture issues (though a few inside the GOP insist this is the case). The real opening for the GOP is with the party's rhetoric on small businesses. If the party can go back to being the party of small business and the party of the entrepreneur (which it isn't right now) then they should find themselves back in the game.

But as long as the party is painted as hostile to Hispanics, they are unlikely to listen to other GOP policies with which they might agree, like taxes and abortion.

The sneak peek can be seen on MSNBC as David Shuster speaks with Telemundo interviewer Pedro Sevcek who openly observes that immigration is a sore subject with Hispanics because McCain's approach is very different from last year to this year. In essence he (McCain) has been silent.

Two hispanic fourth graders in class today got into a fist fight over the argument their parents are having about which sides of the family will be smuggled over first before Obama is elected. When the children were interviewed separately about why they were fighting, the little boys both said that when Obama's elected their cousins don't have to be on a waiting list and neither do their parents anymore and everyone will get to be american then.

12 million added to our Health Care and welfare system Americans, INSTANTLY, and that doesn't count the millions that are sneaking in now and will be in the next months to get on board the free band wagon. Now what do you think the Dangerous Huge Mexican Drug Cartel will do with their already exsisting Methamphetamine Centers stationed in our big cities? The Large and growing Deadly Mexican Gangs working for these Drug Cartel Centers?

Do you know what my 80 year old grandfather, who is a very kind, non racist retired hard working man, told me today after catching a bit of an Obama rally on tv for the first time? He said "I hate to say this, but do you know who Barack Obama looks like and sounds like to me? I remember those days, and he reminds me of Hitler". This is coming from a good hearted man with no bias or interest in this election. He doesn't watch tv regularly, he doesn't drink and he doesn't smoke. It shocked me that he would say such a thing, but I know he meant it from his heart, he just saw and was immediately reminded of days gone past in history.

Obama is using the same mind-emotion control of propoganda manipulation in his speeches and campaign ads that Hitler's entire momentum and structure was built on. The worst part is Obama is also planning to put into place the same government structure as well. Obama is Not a Good Thing Americans.

  Interesting analogy, but what you are saying is that because he makes economic platforms that enhance the lower & middle  classes he's Hitler like ...right?

  So the alternative is to be like czarist Russia where only the very poor or very rich exist in any numbers under McCain. 

  So McCain is czarist Russia and Obama is Hitlers Germany. We as Americans you give no credit to. They'll just manuver us to either extreme, no problem, like zombies we'll follow. You probably saw a Palin rally , I forgive you.

  Of course your forgetting the socialists, but their really the neo - republicans buying up the economic system arm and arm with China. But thats probably ok.

   Obama can preform a speech and actually sound intelligent, thats not Hitler, but its certainly not McCain / Palin. He probably took some of his style from church, but that doesn't make him Hitler.

   Next time you pass you local middle school ask for the best strategy gamer in the school. Ask him what happens when you spread out your military, ship your manufacturing to unreliable allies, eliminate your merchant marine,  enchance your most unproductive class, and destroy your middle class.  Answer: YOU LOSE!

Im neither, as both candidates will not make great presidents. Its very sad, that this election seems to be having a large polarizing effect based upon ethnicity. At least in this discussion. America should just vote for their candidate based upon which platform they like the best. This ethnic polarization will like divide America along these lines and I guess there will have to be some making up after this election, no matter which side wins. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Try looking at it a different way. Obama's message resonates with a more diverse electorate than McCain. What can be wrong with that? IMO: Nothing. Just inclusive representation for more Americans. Which candidates are actively dividing us? That would be McCain and his unvetted base pick from the far right who thrives upon high-school level divisiveness and is naive enough to beleive this too will also be an effective tactic on the real world stage. IMO: McCain should have picked Romney and I beleive this 100% in a big, big way. Yes, Bush indeed polarized us all too dear but in all fairness he did so without specific intention. Deplorably, it is the McCain campaign that intentionally seeks to further divide us by rehashing outdated 20th century politics. Ironically though, the resounding ill effects are seen on the GOP side of the aisle.

        Let us have a frank discussion about debunking the myth of the monolithic Hispanic vote.

        What exactly is the Hispanic vote? Are Hispanics one issue voters. Do we vote as a block guided by some overriding unity of purpose, background, culture, or even fear? The answers to these questions are anything but simple. The first question assumes that we all define Hispanic the same way. I self identify as Hispanic. Like many of my friends and fellow Hispanics I am first and foremost an American.

        My father was a Colombian immigrant who put himself through school, built a business, and dedicated his life to providing his children with the advantages of being educated Americans. I grew up in the Bronx during the late 60s and early 70s . I am a product of New York City public schools and parents who emphasized books over street. The Bronx of the 70s was a place of radical ideas and people. During the mid-'70s, the South Bronx averaged 12,000 fires a year. In the burned-out zone that remained, police fought a losing battle against drugs and gangs. My world consisted of an apartment complex peopled by individuals from every racial and ethnic background. I bought my candy and gum at the corner bodegas, watched the old men on the corner playing dominos and bought crushed ice flavored with “red.” We never knew what red was but it tasted great! Many evenings were spent at my Tio Luis’ house where Cumbia music played and my cousins and I got in trouble constantly. I was a minority even in my own neighborhood as at that time the vast majority of Hispanics in New York were Puerto Rican.

        Today, the largest group of Hispanics in the United States are of Mexican descent. My experience growing up in the South Bronx is markedly different from Hispanics growing up in Texas, California, New Mexico or Florida.

        We Hispanics represent the vast spectrum that is America today. We come in every shade and in every economic and educational stripe. We even disagree about who is and is not Hispanic. We disagree about the use of the word Hispanic!

        So what do we have in common? We all have a subtle yet extraordinarily important connection that links us. People know us as Hispanic. Even when we do not “self identify” as Hispanic we are identified nonetheless. I wear this label proudly.

        Many studies have been done that attempt to identify and categorize Hispanic voting patterns and strength. The one point that they all make is that the Hispanic population in this nation is growing, becoming more economically powerful and in turn, politically powerful.

        To me, what matters is who we are at our core. I submit to you all that Hispanic values are American values; that Hispanic issues are American issues, and that efforts to court the Hispanic vote that do not recognize these realities are doomed to fail.

        Today, as when I grew up, Hispanics in the Bronx vote Democratic in overwhelming numbers. Hispanic voters in many urban areas have traditionally voted Democratic in large numbers. This voting pattern is viewed by the Democratic Party as an Annuity. A sum that is expected each and every year without the need of further investing. Hispanics, by and large have been a consistent and valuable annuity for Democrats. Today, as a result of the multitude of mediums through which political news and discussions are distributed, this annuity may not only dwindle, but cease to pay entirely.

        Let me state as clearly as possible that I am a Republican. I was not always a Republican. After all, I grew up in the Bronx. I didn’t even know what a Republican looked like. So why should a Hispanic from the Bronx be a Republican? That is a simpler answer. I have read and understand the party platforms. I am a father of two young children concerned about their future and the direction our country is going. My views are shaped by the totality of my experiences.

        Like many Hispanics I am culturally conservative. I am a practicing Catholic and believe in family values. It is family values that propel much Latin American immigration to the United States. Many immigrants sacrifice for their loved ones: sometimes leaving behind spouses and children to find a better way to provide for them. Like many Hispanics, I am economically conservative. I believe in a leg up not a hand out. Like many Hispanics, I am focused on my children’s education, safety and well-being. Like many Hispanics, I do not focus solely on immigration policy as the sole issue in this election. Like many Hispanics I look for a President who will ensure the safety of our country, and enable us Americans to achieve the American dream.

        In short, the “Hispanic vote” is made up of Americans who cannot be easily categorized except as caring, family centered, upwardly mobile, and looking for candidates who value and share these traits. Thankfully the Republican Party has recognized this reality. The Democrats in this, and coming elections, risk their annuity by conducting business as usual.

            Todd you are such a liberal Democrat. Anything that you can say to help the continued "worship at the alter of Obama" crap you will write. Everything you have written about Obama and his promises  is now being "looked at and re-evaluated".

            Your journalistic views are so biased you can not be believed. Even if Obama wins, I would not believe one word you write or say, as you have slanted everything in this campaign.

            Yes the media has been making up the numbers from day 1!!! I received a phone call a few days ago and once the pollster found out what yr I was born and he quickly hung up on me hmmmmm !!! I wondered WHY? I e-mailed a well respected journalist in town and inquired to him as to WHY they would do that and he replied that it was meant to warp and skew the numbers to their advantage.

            Ya Jogree, here in Orlando there are several article in the Spanish Language press about the immigration backlash.  I also believe that Palin was the icing on the cake so to speak because she is just not playing well with Hispanic women at all.  Even when she was here last week and visited a prominent Hispanic dinner with a large group of friendly republican Hispanic women, you could tell how uncomfortable she was.  I think the Hispanic community in Florida just smell some kind of contempt she has for them and they just do not like her.  I know the article says that Cubans are excepted from that feeling but I don't think that is true either.  I think the Cuban women just smile a lot and pretent to like her.

              No, Brenda, he's not that bad.  In fact, I'd say that he's very fair and level-headed. I've never seen anything that would merit disparaging remarks or attacks against his character.  I've often seen Todd talking Keith Olbermann down from some of the latter's more virulent rants.

                As of November 5, 2008, when President Obama is officially elected into office, our company will instill a few new policies which are in keeping with his new, inspiring issues of change and fairness:

                 

                1. All salespeople will be pooling their sales and bonuses into a common pool that will be divided equally between all of you.  This will serve to give those of you who are under-achieving a "fair shake".

                2. All low level workers will be pooling their wages, including overtime, into a common pool, dividing it equally amongst you.  This will help those who are "too busy for overtime" to reap the rewards from those who have more spare time and can work extra hours.

                3. All top management will now be referred to as "the government." We will not participate in this "pooling" experience because the law doesn't apply to us.

                4. The "government" will give eloquent speeches to all employees every week, encouraging its workers to continue to work hard "for the good of all".

                5. The employees will be thrilled with these new policies because it's "good to spread the wealth around".  Those of you who have underachieved will finally get an opportunity; those of you who have worked hard and had success will feel more "patriotic".

                6. The last few people who were hired should clean out their desks.  Don't feel bad, though, because President Obama will give you free healthcare, free handouts, free oil for heating your home, free food stamps, and he'll let you stay in your home for as long as you want even if you can't pay your mortgage.  If you appeal directly to our Democratic congress, you might even get a free flat screen TV and a coupon for free haircuts (shouldn't all Americans be entitled to nice looking hair?)!!!

                 We need a laugh! LOL, LOL, LOL

                         I voted for Bush first time around, but have grown tired of the same lies and deception.                                 Senator Obama is true to his mantra of being a UNIT ER, McCain/Palin have gone out of their way to divide this country with their mean spirited rhetoric. When I see an Obama/Biden rally I see a snapshot of America at it's best (everyone is included). When I see a rally of McCain/Palin, I see older white Americans around his age. I recall earlier during the primary pundits would get on Senator Obama for not being able to relate/communicate with those living in small/rural towns. Senator Obama has reached out and made that connection and yet NOBODY in the media has questioned why McCain/Palin have not reached out or connected to minorities. Perhaps they think the minority vote is insignificant.

I have been fighting the Registrar of Voters Department of San Joaquin County California for a year now on this very issue since California has a major illegal immigration problem. I was(am) concerned about voter fraud in this state. During the last election, the issued ballets were in Spanish. I was outraged over having the ballot in Spanish. The law of this country is that only CITIZENS vote, and part of the criteria of being a citizen is to be able to READ and WRITE English making the need for ballets in another language not necessary. I am cognizant of the Civil rights Act of 1964, but it must act within the law. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 DOES NOT justify printing ballets in another language when it is illegal under Article I of the Constitution AND The Immigration and Naturalization Act for non citizens to vote. Laws must act within the framework of the Constitution. This is the very definition of RULE OF LAW! I think the Democrats and Republicans have been trying to bribe illegal aliens with citizenship for their vote.

                                    Requirements for U.S. Citizenship

                                    Age

                                    Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

                                    Residency

                                    An applicant must have been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence. Lawfully admitted for permanent residence means having been legally accorded the privilege of residing permanently in the United States as an immigrant in accordance with the immigration laws. Individuals who have been lawfully admitted as permanent residents will be asked to produce an I-551, Alien Registration Receipt Card, as proof of their status.

                                    Residence and Physical Presence

                                    An applicant is eligible to file if, immediately preceding the filing of the application, he or she:

                                    • has been lawfully admitted for permanent residence;

                                    • has resided continuously as a lawful permanent resident in the U.S. for at least 5 years prior to filing with absences from the United States totaling no more than one year;

                                    • has been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the previous five years (absences of more than six months but less than one year break the continuity of residence unless the applicant can establish that he or she did not abandon his or her residence during such period);

                                    • has resided within a state or district for at least three months.

                                    Good Moral Character

                                    Generally, an applicant must show that he or she has been a person of good moral character for the statutory period (typically five years or three years if married to a U.S. citizen or one year for Armed Forces expedite) prior to filing for naturalization. The Service is not limited to the statutory period in determining whether an applicant has established good moral character. An applicant is permanently barred from naturalization if he or she has ever been convicted of murder. An applicant is also permanently barred from naturalization if he or she has been convicted of an aggravated felony as defined in section 101(a)(43) of the Act on or after November 29, 1990. A person also cannot be found to be a person of good moral character if during the last five years he or she:

                                    • has committed and been convicted of one or more crimes involving moral turpitude

                                    • has committed and been convicted of 2 or more offenses for which the total sentence imposed was 5 years or more

                                    • has committed and been convicted of any controlled substance law, except for a single offense of simple possession of 30 grams or less of marijuana

                                    • has been confined to a penal institution during the statutory period, as a result of a conviction, for an aggregate period of 180 days or more

                                    • has committed and been convicted of two or more gambling offenses

                                    • is or has earned his or her principle income from illegal gambling

                                    • is or has been involved in prostitution or commercialized vice

                                    • is or has been involved in smuggling illegal aliens into the United States

                                    • is or has been a habitual drunkard

                                    • is practicing or has practiced polygamy

                                    • has willfully failed or refused to support dependents

                                    • has given false testimony, under oath, in order to receive a benefit under the Immigration and Nationality Act.

                                    An applicant must disclose all relevant facts to the Service, including his or her entire criminal history, regardless of whether the criminal history disqualifies the applicant under the enumerated provisions.

                                    Attachment to the Constitution

                                    An applicant must show that he or she is attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States.

                                    Language

                                    Applicants for naturalization must be able to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary usage in the English language. Applicants exempt from this requirement are those who on the date of filing:

                                    • have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for at least 15 years and are over 55 years of age;

                                    • have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for at least 20 years and are over 50 years of age; or

                                    • have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment, where the impairment affects the applicant’s ability to learn English.

                                    United States Government and History Knowledge

                                    An applicant for naturalization must demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of the history and of the principles and form of government of the United States. Applicants exempt from this requirement are those who, on the date of filing, have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment, where the impairment affects the applicant’s ability to learn U.S. History and Government.

                                    Applicants who have been residing in the U.S. subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for at least 20 years and are over the age of 65 will be afforded special consideration in satisfying this requirement.

                                    Oath of Allegiance

                                    To become a citizen, one must take the oath of allegiance. By doing so, an applicant swears to:

                                    • support the Constitution and obey the laws of the U.S.;

                                    • renounce any foreign allegiance and/or foreign title; and

                                    • bear arms for the Armed Forces of the U.S. or perform services for the government of the U.S. when required.

                                    In certain instances, where the applicant establishes that he or she is opposed to any type of service in armed forces based on religious teaching or belief, USCIS will permit these applicants to take a modified oath.

                                    Spouses of U.S. Citizens

                                    Generally, certain lawful permanent residents married to a U.S. citizen may file for naturalization after residing continuously in the United States for three years if immediately preceding the filing of the application:

                                    • the applicant has been married to and living in a valid marital union with the same U.S. citizen spouse for all three years;

                                    • the U.S. spouse has been a citizen for all three years and meets all physical presence and residence requirements; and

                                    • the applicant meets all other naturalization requirements.

                                    There are also exceptions for lawful permanent residents married to U.S. citizens stationed or employed abroad. Some lawful permanent residents may not have to comply with the residence or physical presence requirements when the U.S. citizen spouse is employed by one of the following:

                                    • the U.S. Government (including the U.S. Armed Forces);

                                    • American research institutes recognized by the Attorney General;

                                    • recognized U.S. religious organizations;

                                    • U.S. research institutions;

                                    • an American firm engaged in the development of foreign trade and commerce of the United States; or

                                    • certain public international organizations involving the United States.

                                    Veterans of U.S. Armed Forces

                                    Certain applicants who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to file for naturalization based on current or prior U.S. military service. Such applicants should file the N-400 Military Naturalization Packet.

                                    Lawful Permanent Residents with Three Years U.S. Military Service

                                    An applicant who has served for three years in the U.S. military and who is a lawful permanent resident is excused from any specific period of required residence, period of residence in any specific place, or physical presence within the United States if an application for naturalization is filed while the applicant is still serving or within six months of an honorable discharge.
                                    To be eligible for these exemptions, an applicant must:

                                    • have served honorably or separated under honorable conditions;

                                    • completed three years or more of military service;

                                    • be a legal permanent resident at the time of his or her examination on the application; or

                                    • establish good moral character if service was discontinuous or not honorable.

                                    Applicants who file for naturalization more than six months after termination of three years of service in the U.S. military may count any periods of honorable service as residence and physical presence in the United States.

                                    An applicant who has served honorably during any of the following periods of conflict is entitled to certain considerations:

                                    World War I - 4/16/17 to 11/11/18;
                                    World War II - 9/1/39 to 12/31/46;
                                    Korean Conflict - 6/25/50 to 7/1/55;
                                    Vietnam Conflict - 2/28/61 to 10/15/78;
                                    Operation Desert Shield/ Desert Storm - 8/29/90 to 4/11/91; or
                                    any other period which the President, by Executive Order, has designated as a period in which the Armed Forces of the United States are or were engaged in military operations involving armed conflict with hostile foreign forces.

                                    Applicants who have served during any of the aforementioned conflicts may apply for naturalization based on military service after qualifying service and the requirements for specific periods of physical presence in the United States and residence in the United States are waived

                                    You state the general requirements for naturalization.  You are correct that naturalization requires basic knowledge of English.  Naturalization is one way to become a citizen, but it is not the exclusive way.  In the case of speakers of other languages, their children who are born in the United States or its territories are citizens by birth, not naturalization; and they need not know English.  The naturalization requirements also exempt long-term legal residents of the United States from the language requirement.

                                    In sum, you are correct with regard to the general requirements of the naturalization process, and I am correct with regard to those born within the United States and its territories.  Fair enough?

                                    Technically under the law what you say is true, but the "spirit" of the law was to require that people LEGALLY immigrating to this country would follow the requirements I posted above and learn English so that their children would speak English. One would think that second generation immigrants would be able to speak English. Anchor babies are a problem that needs to be addressed.

                                                As an Hispanic (Texan) I do believe that  McCain/Palin has not reach to me or to my needs.  In the last month or more I have done my research and what I see from the McCain/Palin is a distructive behavior in putting Americans againts Americans.  Instead of inspiring people to "choose" the way they want this country to be headed to they choose to instigate people, instigate party lines, instigate Anti-American behavior.  On the other hand, Obama/Biden have urge us to make a change, to make something about our country, economy, immigration, schools.  Instead of making us feel good for our 'future" the McCain/Palin is making me uncertain of our future.  As I already cast my "vote" (Early voting in Texas); my family (6 potential voters) will cast there vote for Obama/Biden.  Gracias!

                                                          Chuck Todd is right.  Regardless of whatever opinion one might have about his personal politics (which I don't believe all clear at all), his analysis of this issue is correct.

                                                          Losing Hispanic support and votes is the price that McCain must pay for surrendering his principles and for his desire to effect immigration reform to the Republican base.  McCain gave up on Hispanics in order to gain the nomination of his party.  Now he must pay that price.

                                                          The U.S. Census Bureau reported in June 2005 that:

                                                          Hispanics, who may be of any race, accounted for about one-half of the national population growth of 2.9 million between July 1, 2003, and July 1, 2004. The Hispanic growth rate of 3.6 percent over the 12-month period was more than three times that of the total population (1.0 percent).

                                                          Clearly, for any political party and its candidates to succeed in future elections, they must appeal to Hispanic voters.  This will only increase in importance as our national demographics continue to shift.

                                                          That said, no one should assume that Hispanics are a monolithic, homogeneous voting block.  Like Caucasians, there are diverse elements among Hispanics.  There are significant differences between Cuban-Americans in Miami and Mexican-Americans in Los Angeles, and between Hispanics with multi-generational roots in this country that predate Anglos and recent immigrants.  Developing an approach that will appeal to all of these diverse elements will be difficult if not impossible, but a good beginning is respect rather than demonization.  The Republican party would do well to remember that.

                                                          I am Hispanics, and I can tell that Chuck Todd  is totally right, more over, Obama could get 80% of the Hispanic vote.  Before I say anything I vote for GW Bush twice ( shame of me) and I start getting away from Republicans after listening to the readio talk. The issue was all this antimmigration rethoric . In many ocassions I posted opinion saying that without Hispanic , even in a close race , Republicans can't win without the Hispanic vote  and that the immigration issue would harm this party. 

                                                          Going to the point, my opinion was based in that even I came to this country legally and I am US citizen now, the antiimmigration policies of the Republicans were harming my friends who I share my table with and my children , facing progressive animosity at the School. In mAny ocassions I told other Republicans that every legal Hispanics is emotionally attached to illegal Hispanics because of freinship, we are very protective of each other,  then whatever policy that harm our friends that are not llegally it is harming all of us that are here llegally.

                                                          If they (republicans) would be able to have a real understanding of our culture , probably the attacks with such hate to our syster and brothers would  never have had place and perhaps a great numbers of us would be supportive of them, but they destroyed the trust and we hardly will vote for a Republican again.

                                                                  The immigration issue was always on the top of list of concerns of Latino voters.  We also have strong memories.  McCain abandoned us in order to gain the support of the right-wingers who kept bashing immigrants and wanting to build a wall along the U.S. border.  Republicans did not learn their lesson from California, where they bashed immigrants under the guise of Prop. 187 in 1994.  The result was turning California from a light blue state to a dark blue one!  Latinos are not dumb. They know that "immigrant bashing" is code for "Latino bashing."  I and the majority of Latino voters will push Obama over the top in key states and make him the next President of the United States!                                                                           one of the main reasons, and i do have to say that i don;t support this reason... but here goes... when latinos come to the USA they USUALLY come to work, well they usually are poor and have to live in broken inter-city areas.  most of the people that live in these don't work and are supported by the government, so there are to different mindsets,  a group that strong work ethic and another group that lacks desire to work... here in lies the problems...

                                                                              Lately?  I would like for you to back that statement up with facts instead of casusal observations.  I dont know where you live but from where I have been and with those that I have spoken to... the greater majority of Hispanics I know work their *** off to make a decent wage and living for their families.  Yes, there are the few who want everything FREE but please dont marginalize the majority who arent of that mind set.

                                                                                Do not listen to archman thats not the reason. There is not that much resentment from either side to each other. Pitting the two against each other is a right wing plot to get votes for their lame candidates.                                                                                         Hillary Backers Decry Massive Obama Vote Fraud

                                                                                        With accusations of voter registration fraud swirling as early voting begins in many states, some Hillary Clinton supporters are saying: “I told you so.”

                                                                                        Already in Iowa, the Obama campaign was breaking the rules, busing in supporters from neighboring states to vote illegally in the first contest in the primaries and physically intimidating Hillary supporters, they say.

                                                                                        Obama’s surprisingly strong win in Iowa, which defied all the polls, propelled his upstart candidacy to front-runner status. But Lynette Long, a Hillary supporter from Bethesda, Md., who has a long and respected academic career, believes Obama’s victory in Iowa and in 12 other caucus states was no miracle. “It was fraud,” she told Newsmax.

                                                                                        Long has spent several months studying the caucus and primary results.

                                                                                        “After studying the procedures and results from all 14 caucus states, interviewing dozens of witnesses, and reviewing hundreds of personal stories, my conclusion is that the Obama campaign willfully and intentionally defrauded the American public by systematically undermining the caucus process,” she said.

                                                                                        In Hawaii, for example, the caucus organizers ran out of ballots, so Obama operatives created more from Post-its and scraps of paper and dumped them into ice cream buckets. “The caucuses ended up with more ballots than participants, a sure sign of voter fraud,” Long said.

                                                                                        In Nevada, Obama supporters upturned a wheelchair-bound woman who wanted to caucus for Hillary, flushed Clinton ballots down the toilets, and told union members they could vote only if their names were on the list of Obama supporters.

                                                                                        In Texas, more than 2,000 Clinton and Edwards supporters filed complaints with the state Democratic Party because of the massive fraud. The party acknowledged that the Obama campaign’s actions “amount to criminal violations” and ordered them to be reported to state and federal law enforcement, but nothing happened.

                                                                                        In caucus after caucus, Obama bused in supporters from out of state, intimidated elderly voters and women, and stole election packets so Hillary supporters couldn’t vote. Thanks to these and other strong-arm tactics, Obama won victories in all but one of the caucuses, even in states such as Maine where Hillary had been leading by double digits in the polls.

                                                                                        Obama’s win in the caucuses, which were smaller events than the primaries and were run by the party, not the states, gave him the margin of victory he needed to win a razor-thin majority in the delegate count going into the Democratic National Convention.

                                                                                        Without these caucus wins, which Long and others claim were based on fraud, Clinton would be the Democrats’ nominee running against John McCain.

                                                                                        Citing a detailed report on the voting results and delegate accounts by accountant Piniel Cronin, “there were only four pledged delegates between Hillary and Obama once you discount caucus fraud,” Long said.

                                                                                        Long has compiled many of these eyewitness reports from the 14 caucus states in a 98-page, single-spaced report and in an interactive Web site: www.caucusanalysis.org.

                                                                                        ACORN involvement

                                                                                        The Obama campaign recently admitted that it paid an affiliate of ACORN, the controversial community organizer that Obama represented in Chicago, more than $832,000 for “voter turnout” work during the primaries. The campaign initially claimed the money had been spent on “staging, sound and light” and “advance work.”

                                                                                        State and federal law enforcement in 11 states are investigating allegations of voter registration fraud against the Obama campaign. ACORN workers repeatedly registered voters in the name of “Mickey Mouse,” and registered the entire starting lineup of the Dallas Cowboys twice: once in Nevada, and again in Minnesota.

                                                                                        A group that has worked with ACORN in the past registered a dead goldfish under the name “Princess Nudelman” in Illinois. When reporters informed Beth Nudelman, a Democrat, that her former pet was a registered voter, she said, “This person is a dead fish."

                                                                                        ACORN was known for its “intimidation tactics,” said independent scholar Stanley Kurtz, a senior fellow with the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, D.C., who has researched Obama’s long-standing ties to the group.

                                                                                        Fully 30 percent of 1.3 million new voters ACORN claims to have registered this year are believed to be illegitimate.

                                                                                        Long shared with Newsmax some of the emails and sworn affidavits she received from Hillary supporters who witnessed first-hand the thuggish tactics employed by Obama campaign operatives in Iowa and elsewhere.

                                                                                        Jeff, a precinct captain for Clinton from Davenport, Iowa, thought his caucus was in the bag for his candidate, until just minutes before the voting actually began.

                                                                                        “From 6-6:30 p.m., it appeared as I had expected. Young, old males, females, Hispanics, whites, gay and lesbian friends arriving. Very heavily for Ms. Clinton, a fair amount for Edwards and some stragglers for Obama,” he said.

                                                                                        That makeup corresponded to what he had witnessed from many precinct walks he had made through local neighborhoods.

                                                                                        “My mind began to feel victory for my lady,’ he said. “THEN: at 6:50 p.m., over 75 people of African-American descent came walking in, passed the tables and sat in the Obama section. I knew one of them from my canvassing. I knew another one who did not live in this precinct. And aside from four or five families that live on Hillandale Road, there are no other black people in this unusually white precinct. And one of those black couples were in my Hillary section,” he said.

                                                                                        Thanks to the last-minute influx of unknown Obama supporters, Obama won twice the number of delegates from the precinct as Hillary Clinton.

                                                                                        After it was over, “a very large bus was seen in the parking lot afterwards carrying these folks back” to Illinois, Jeff said.

                                                                                        Obama’s flagrant busing of out-of-state caucus participants from Illinois was so obvious that even Joe Biden — today his running mate, then his rival — pointed it out at the time.

                                                                                        At a campaign stop before the Jan. 3 caucus at the JJ Diner in Des Moines, Biden “said what we were all thinking when he got on stage and said, ‘Hello Iowa!’ and then turned to Barack’s crowd and shouted, ‘and Hello Chicago!’” another precinct captain for Hillary told Long.

                                                                                        Thanks to Illinois campaign workers bused across the border into Iowa, all the precincts in eastern Iowa went for Obama, guaranteeing his win in the caucuses, Long said.

                                                                                        Obama supporters were also bused into northeast Iowa from Omaha, Nebraska, where Obama campaign workers were seen handing out “i-pods and free stuff: T-shirts, clothes, shoes, and free meals” to students and people in homeless shelters,” according to eyewitness reports Long collected.

                                                                                        In Iowa City, red and white chartered buses with Illinois license plates arrived from Illinois packed with boisterous African-American high school students, who came to caucus for Obama in Iowa after being recruited by Obama campaign workers.

                                                                                        2,000 complaints in Texas

                                                                                        In a change in the Democratic National Committee rules for this year’s election season, four states had caucuses and primaries: Washington, Nebraska, Idaho, and Texas. “But Texas is the only one that counted both the caucus result and the primary result,” Long told Newsmax. “The others didn’t count the primary at all, calling it a ‘beauty contest.’”

                                                                                        Because caucuses are more informal, and can last hours, they tend to favor candidates with a strong ground operation or whose supporters use strong-arm tactics to intimidate their rivals.

                                                                                        “There is inherent voter disenfranchisement in the caucuses,” Long said. “Women are less likely to go to caucuses than men, because they don’t like the public nature of the caucus. The elderly are less likely to go to a caucus. People who work shifts can’t go if they work the night shift. And parents with young children can’t go out for four hours on a week night. All these people are traditionally Clinton supporters,” she said.

                                                                                        But Obama’s victories in the caucuses weren’t the result of better organization, Long insists. “It was fraud.”

                                                                                        In state after state, Hillary was leading Obama in the polls right up until the last minute, when Obama won a landslide victory in the caucuses.

                                                                                        The discrepancies between the polls and the caucus results were stunning, Long told Newsmax. The most flagrant example was Minnesota. A Minnesota Public Radio/Humphrey Institute poll just one week before the Feb. 5 caucus gave Hillary a 7-point lead over Obama, 40-33.

                                                                                        But when the Minnesota caucus results were counted, Obama won by a landslide, with 66.39 percent to just 32.23 percent for Hillary, giving him 48 delegates, compared with 24 for Clinton.

                                                                                        “No poll is that far off,” Long told Newsmax.

                                                                                        Similar disparities occurred in 13 of 14 caucus states.

                                                                                        In Colorado and Idaho, Obama had a 2-point edge over Hillary Clinton in the polls, but won by more than 2-1 in the caucuses, sweeping most delegates.

                                                                                        In Kansas, Hillary had a slight edge over Obama in the polls, but Obama won 74 percent of the votes in the caucus and most of the delegates. In nearly every state, he bested the pre-caucus polls by anywhere from 12 percent to more than 30 percent.

                                                                                        This year’s primary rules for the Democrats favored the caucus states over the primary states.

                                                                                        “Caucus states made up only 1.1 million (3 percent) of all Democratic votes, but selected 626 (15 percent) of the delegates,” says Gigi Gaston, a filmmaker who has made a documentary on the caucus fraud.

                                                                                        In Texas alone, she says, there were more than 2,000 complaints from Hillary Clinton and John Edwards supporters of Obama’s strong-arm tactics.

                                                                                        One Hillary supporter, who appears in Gaston’s new film, “We Will Not Be Silenced,” says she received death threats from Obama supporters after they saw her address in an online video she made to document fraud during the Texas caucus. “People called me a whore and a skank,” she said.

                                                                                        John Siegel, El Paso Area Captain for Hillary, said, “Some people saw outright cheating. Other people just saw strong-arm tactics. I saw fraud.”

                                                                                        Another woman, who was not identified in the film, described the sign-in process. “You’re supposed to sign your names on these sheets. The sheets are supposed to be controlled, and passed out — this is kind of how you maintain order. None of that was done. The sheets were just flying all over the place. You could put in your own names. You could add your own sheets or anything. It was just filled with fraud.”

                                                                                        Other witnesses described how Obama supporters went through the crowds at the caucus telling Hillary supporters they could go home because their votes had been counted, when in fact no vote count had yet taken place.

                                                                                        “I couldn’t believe this was happening,” one woman said in the film. “I thought this only happened in Third World countries.”

                                                                                        On election day in Texas, Clinton campaign lawyer Lyn Utrecht issued a news release that the national media widely ignored.

                                                                                        “The campaign legal hot line has been flooded with calls containing specific accusations of irregularities and voter intimidation against the Obama campaign,” she wrote. “This activity is undemocratic, probably illegal, and reflects a wanton disregard for the caucus process.”

                                                                                        She identified 18 separate precincts where Obama operatives had removed voting packets before the Clinton voters could arrive, despite a written warning from the state party not to remove them.

                                                                                        The hot line also received numerous calls during the day that “the Obama campaign has taken over caucus sites and locked the doors, excluding Clinton campaign supporters from participating in the caucus,” she wrote.

                                                                                        “There are numerous instances of Obama supporters filing out precinct convention sign-in sheets during the day and submitting them as completed vote totals at caucus. This is expressly against the rules,” she added.

                                                                                        But no one seemed to care.

                                                                                        Despite Clinton’s three-and-a-half point win in the Texas primary — 50.87 percent to 47.39 percent —Obama beat her in the caucus the same day by 56 to 43.7 percent, giving him a 38-to-29 advantage in delegates.

                                                                                        Linda Hayes investigated the results at the precinct level in three state Senate districts. Under the rules of the Texas Democratic Party, participants in the caucuses had to reside in the precinct where they were caucusing, and had to have voted in the Democratic primary that same day.

                                                                                        When she began to see the results coming in from the precincts that were wildly at variance with the primary results, “I could see that something was wrong,” Hayes said.

                                                                                        Hayes says she found numerous anomalies as she went through the precinct sign-in sheets.

                                                                                        “Many, many, many Obama people either came to the wrong precinct, they did not sign in properly, they did not show ID, or they did not vote that day.” And yet, their votes were counted.

                                                                                        In a letter to Rep. Lois Capps, a Clinton supporter calling himself “Pacific John,” described the fraud he had witnessed during the caucuses.

                                                                                        “On election night in El Paso, it became obvious that the Obama field campaign was designed to steal caucuses. Prior to that, it was impossible for me to imagine the level of attempted fraud and disruption we would see,” he wrote.

                                                                                        “We saw stolen precincts where Obama organizers fabricated counts, made false entries on sign-in sheets, suppressed delegate counts, and suppressed caucus voters. We saw patterns such as missing electronic access code sheets and precinct packets taken before the legal time, like elsewhere in the state. Obama volunteers illegally took convention materials state-wide, with attempts as early as 6:30 am.”

                                                                                        The story of how Obama stole the Democratic Party caucuses — and consequently, the Democratic Party nomination — is important not just because it prefigures potential voter fraud in the Nov. 4 presidential election, which is under way.

                                                                                        It’s important because it fits a pattern that Chicago journalists and a few national and international commentators have noticed in all of the elections Obama has won in his career.

                                                                                        NBC correspondent Martin Fletcher described Obama’s first election victory, for the Illinois state Senate, in a recent commentary that appeared in the London Telegraph.

                                                                                        “Mr. Obama won a seat in the state Senate in 1996 by the unorthodox means of having surrogates successfully challenge the hundreds of nomination signatures that candidates submit. His Democratic rivals, including Alice Palmer, the incumbent, were all disqualified,” Fletcher wrote.

                                                                                        Obama’s election to the U.S. Senate “was even more curious,” conservative columnist Tony Blankley wrote in The Washington Times.

                                                                                        Citing an account that appeared in The Times of London, Blankley described how Obama managed to squeeze out his main Democratic rival, Blair Hull, after divorce papers revealed allegations that Hull had allegedly made a death threat to his former wife.

                                                                                        Then in the general election, “lightning struck again,” Blankley wrote, when his Republican opponent, wealthy businessman Jack Ryan, was forced to withdraw in extremis after his divorce papers revealed details of his sexual life with his former wife.

                                                                                        Just weeks before the election, the Illinois Republican party called on Alan Keyes of Maryland to challenge Obama in the general election. Obama won a landslide victory.

                                                                                        “Mr. Obama’s elections are pregnant with the implications that he has so far gamed every office he has sought by underhanded and sordid means,” Blankley wrote, while “the American media has let these extraordinary events simply pass without significant comment.”

                                                                                        Hillary Clinton supporters, belatedly, now agree.

In my city Latinos Mexicans and poor whites along with blacks all share the same neighborhoods without the slightest racial problems. These are poor neighborhoods none the less but they all share one thing in common. Low pay poor working conditions lack of insurance etc. But then we do not have the Gang problems LA has.

                                                                                                        I am a second-generation Hispanic.  My father served with distinction in combat in WWII, as did his brother.  My brother is a Vietnam War vet.  You would find that my family's story is no different from many other Hispanics who love this country and have fought, sacrificed, and died for it.

                                                                                                        For you to insinuate that the Hispanic vote consists of illegal aliens, who can't vote anyway, is the kind of insult and inflammatory rhetoric that turns us away from right-wing zealots of prejudice, hate, and division.

We are many from many different backgrounds and we have been here for a long long time. My Spanish roots are from Spain I am a third generation on my Spanish side and a 4th generation for my German Mother. The people born in Puerto Rico are born Citizens and there are many all over the US. Just one advice Paul get to Know the people before you pass judgement on them.
