On TV, it seems like it’s all Obama, all the time

— Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama blanketed the airwaves Wednesday night with an unusual 30-minute advertisement on seven television networks in a splashy demonstration of the extraordinary financial resources at his disposal with less than a week to go before Election Day.

There was nothing particularly special about the ad itself — which conjured up images of a country crying out for change against a suitably patriotic background — except for its length. Not since 1992, when independent billionaire Ross Perot self-financed a series of infomercials, has a presidential candidate aired program-length advertisements in prime time.

“We’ve seen over the last eight years how decisions by a president can have a profound effect on the course of history and on American lives. But much that’s wrong in our country goes back even farther than that. We’ve been talking about the same problems for decades and nothing is ever done to solve them,” Obama said.

“For the past 20 months, I’ve traveled the length of this country, and Michelle and I have met so many Americans who are looking for real and lasting change that makes a difference in their lives.”

Obama featured the stories of four families who were portrayed as struggling in the slumping economy. Explaining how he would address their problems, he spotlighted his proposals for energy efficiency, reduced spending in Iraq, investments in health care technology and preventive measures, tax cuts for the middle class and increased spending on early childhood education.

The campaign hired Davis Guggenheim, executive producer of former Vice President Al Gore’s Academy Award-winning documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” and director of the HBO series “Deadwood,” to direct the ad, which aired on NBC, CBS, Fox, MSNBC, BET, Univision and TV One. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

And it could even afford to go live at one point. Before a cheering crowd of supporters in Kissimmee, Fla., Obama cut in to urge “all of those who joined us across the country” to “choose an economy that rewards work and creates jobs and fuels prosperity, especially for the middle class.”

“In six days, we can choose hope over fear and unity over division,” he said.

McCain can’t keep up
The campaign of Republican nominee
John McCain released a short statement afterward, saying: “As anyone who has bought anything from an infomercial knows, the sales job is always better than the product. Buyer beware.”

McCain launched a pre-emptive strike before the ad aired, calling it a “gauzy, feel-good infomercial” that he said was paid for by “broken promises,” a reference to Obama’s circumvention of spending limits by his refusal to accept public funding. He also released a traditional 30-second ad recalling his attack on Obama last summer as a lightweight celebrity, dismissing him as a candidate of “fancy speeches, grand promises and TV specials.”

But the ad buy was a powerful statement of Obama’s financial advantage with the campaign in its final week.

At about $4 million, it ranks as one of the most expensive political ads in history. But that is only about 1.7 percent of the campaign’s total spending on television, which is projected to hit $230 million by Election Day.

About $100 million of that will have been spent in October, meaning Obama’s one-month budget for television alone is more than the entire post-convention campaign budget for McCain, who accepted a spending limit of $85 million when he opted to avail himself of public financing. As a result, the Obama campaign is able to run an average of 7,700 TV ads a day across the country, about double what McCain has been able to afford, according to research this month by TNSMI-Campaign Media Analysis Group, a political advertising consulting firm.

Indeed, while McCain has been scaling back his television spending in some states — among them Michigan, Minnesota and Colorado — Obama has the resources to dump new money into states he appeared to have written off long ago.

With signs that West Virginia, for example, may again be competitive, the Obama campaign is returning to the airwaves there, while aides said they were also considering pouring new money into Kentucky, North Dakota and Georgia.

And while McCain has made judicious use of so-called “free media” — news coverage and TV events like the appearance by his vice presidential running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, on “Saturday Night Live” — Obama has kept pace.

Wednesday, in fact, Obama was set to make more free TV appearances than McCain, above and beyond the 30-minute ad. Obama also taped appearances on ABC’s “World News” and Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” while McCain was scheduled for a single appearance on CNN’s “Larry King Live.”

It all adds up to a television landscape in which entertainment and sports programming often is merely a temporary respite from the relentless march of political advertising, because in addition to the glut of presidential spots, viewers in many parts of the country are also being inundated by spots for local and state candidates.

TV ads work, especially negative ones
The reason is that TV ads works — especially negative ads, however much voters may say they dislike them.

Researchers at the University of Notre Dame found that during the 2004 presidential election, 14 percent of voters said they changed their minds about their favored candidate after watching negative ads.

“Negative advertising, in spite of the fact that we don’t like it, still can shift opinion,” said Joe Urbany, a marketing professor who led the research team.

“The negative is attention-getting. It tends to generate more argumentation and counter argumentation," Urbany said. “Again, people don’t like it as much, but they’re thinking about it.”

Moreover, said Dan Jones of Dan Jones & Associates, a political polling firm in Utah, “people have an easier time remembering something negative about a particular candidate rather than an issue.”

That’s why, beginning Thursday, the National Republican Congressional Committee will begin spending $84,000 over five days in Pittsburgh on attack ads in behalf of William Russell, the Republican opponent to Democratic Rep. John Murtha. The ads include clips of Murtha using the words “redneck” and “racist” to describe some Pennsylvanians.

In Georgia, meanwhile, Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss is facing his own negative assault from Democrat Jim Martin. For Chambliss, the position is a turnabout — six years ago, he unseated Democratic Sen. Max Cleland, a decorated veteran who was left a paraplegic by injuries he suffered in the Vietnam War, by airing ads that questioned Cleland’s patriotism.

‘Don’t believe everything you hear’
Bob Botsch, a political scientist at the University of South Carolina-Aiken who has tracked political ads for more than 30 years, said ads like those preyed on uninformed voters, who he said should not take them at face value.

In one recent ad, the Obama campaign accused McCain of opposing “stem cell research.” But McCain not only has long supported stem cell research; he even broke with his party in 2001 in support of more controversial research on embryonic stem cells. What the Obama campaign spotlighted was the position of the Republican platform — which McCain disagrees with.

“If you look at the Republican platform, it is a much more radical position against stem cell research,” Botsch said. “I think that’s what the Obama people are seizing on.”

Likewise, Botsch said, a recent McCain ad twisted Obama’s position when it claimed that “Senator Obama voted 94 times for higher taxes.”

“The tax thing is pretty much taking votes out of context and making it look like a vote for a tax increase, when, in fact, it may have been a vote to not continue a tax decrease or a vote that was one part of what may be a more complicated package later,” Botsch said.

John Frank, a political analyst in Eau Claire, Wis., said there was a clear lesson for voters:

“Don’t believe everything you hear in a 30-second commercial, whether it’s a politician or a new chair for your living room.”

Mr. Rogers.

Agreed.. it's the jokers on both sides of these two parties that are driving me insane. They are naive. It has been BOTH parties over the past 20 years that have screwed this country over on energy dependence, robbing social security, special interest, and politics as usual. No matter who wins, it will be much of the same...

I don't blame you, but I think if you make a list of real positives and real negatives of each candidate, you can pick the better one of the two.  There is no reason to accept the worst one.  THEN go join the Constitution party, or whatever other party you like better and build it to a stronger national recognition.  Perot only needed 3 more percentage points I would have signed on in '92.

If you watched Barack Obama's 30 minute ad, I would think at the very least you would feel hopeful that a presidential candidate actually gets us and really cares about our country.  It was great!

Can't believe you bought what Obama was selling. Read the Associated Press article about his commercial tonight.  They broke it down issue by issue,  and it turns out Mr. Obama cannot do what he promises and there were untruths(lies), as well.  Go ahead, read it online.  I couldn't believe the AP actually printed the truth.  Thank God for fact checkers.

I already voted via absentee ballot, and after seeing Obama's "infomerical" earlier tonight, I feel that I made the correct choice according to my conscience.  I sure hope that Obama's sincerity carries over into his presidency if he's elected.  I'm pretty certain, though, that he's genuine and will try his utmost to work diligently if elected to the presidential office.

And yes, I already know that there are dissenters out there who disagree with me and think that Obama is the scourge of the earth or something, but I am entitled to my opinion and express it with sincerity and conviction... and those of you who disagree and believe that McCain is a better candidate: more power to you.

Obama says he is going to "save the world"......I can't believe that he actually said that statement.  What a pompous ass.  Also, the infomercial was just like any of the others that you see on late night t.v.  They are all full of crap and just trying to sell something unworthy of buying.  I was leaning toward voting for Obama but as the weeks go on I am changing my mind. After watching his infomercial tonight,  I think that he is such a fake.

You republicans are all the same continually bringing up things that are obviously untrue and have nothing to do with the issues. McCain on Larry King admits that Obama is not a socialist - so why keep bringing it up? We have all heard Obama's position on Israel yet he gets into bs about some Palestinian. Nobody cares. This has to be the most amateur election campaign in history. If he can't run a campaign how can he run the country? I don't even want to get started on Palin, she even makes Donald Stoetzel sound halfway intelligent!

chad,

the word is CHANGE, if you didn't hear it, maybe you could have read it on the 30K signs in the areana,

or perhaps it is the consistent message that bug s the republicans from Obama, Democrats know how he feels, because he has been saying the same thing for over a year, unlike McCain I can't tell you how he feels except, He feels "Obama Bad"

after the flip flop McCain of the past 8 years, who knows hwo he is, he was one guy in 2000 and after, adamately opposed to Bushes policies until he wanted the nomination, then there he goes waaaaay out right with the Bush man, to pick ol Sarah Palin or the Evangelical tree of Republican life,

While I agree the 2 party system is the largest culprit of where we are now, I see no end to the destruction this in-fighting is doing to our nation. That being said- Palin was correct in her definition of the Bush Doctrine which is documented in a text called the "National Security Strategy of the United States" with the National Security Council. The Doctrine represents a change in the way we declare war in the US- where we declare war not on another country but on an organization. This is what Palin said in her interview- the state of the union address where Bush said we were declaring war on terrorists whereever they were at. The concept of pre-emptive strike was one of the tactics of the said war. It was added at a later date to the original text. She also was correct in her answer regarding her foreign affairs experience. Trade and national security are the 2 main topics in foreign relations. Alaska's trade agreements and protection of our country's borders qualify. Further, these relations are with Russia (an old enemy and current concern) and Canada (an old friend which we hope to maintain.) She is indeed the only candidate with direct executive experience and who as governor has had experience with oversight of a military force- on the state level. As for her pregnant daughter, Obama's mother and Palin's daughter shared the same situation at the same age...

As for Obama- in these hard economical times, why did he not make better use of the dollars he has raised. If he is so solid to win, why blow that money?

In any case, a reference to making the world better is indeed pompous and the world should take note of this American speaking in the "old" much hated American tongue which assumes the world can only be saved by one nation... this is indeed why much of the world sneers at us! Thanks Barack...

Obama has had a high turnout at most of his campaigning spots, but if you look at the reason why - it leaves you wondering where this "leader" will take the USA.  The colleges he has gone to have cancelled classes - why not, its probably the parents that are paying for the education of the 18-21 years old that want a change!  In fact, most of the bright and wonderful individuals have never worked or had to support themselves.  A wonderful change for them would be for their parents to cut off all their funds and let them earn their degree the hard way - unless of course they have connections like the Obamas.  Senator Obama has asked individuals to take off from class or work next Tuesday - why not these individuals probably don't work 60 hours a weeks anyway.  Yesterday Senator Biden made a plea for people to go to Florida to go door to door to get people to get out to vote.  My question is (1) who has the time to take off from work or class to go door to door and (2) who is "home" to answer the door.  Obviously the working class falls in neither of these two categories.  Yesterday one of the many biased newscasters made the comment that McCain is not seeing the large turnouts that Obama is - well, duh, McCain's supporters ARE WORKING!!!!

    Hey Flash and Wild:

What is your solution, take all the poor single mothers and their children out back and shoot them????

You can be from a single parent home and part of the middle class. It only requires a job where you are paid a decent wage, rather than be taken advantage of by a greedy, gluttonous, wart hog of a boss, who hoards for him or herself

I saw the Ross Perot ad and this one. Ross was not wrong... just a little nuts.

Obama is starting to remind me of Lincoln in a couple of ways.

Revisionists question how much of an abolitionist Lincoln was in the beginning. I seem to remember that he was enough of an abolitionist that his mere election to the presidency was enough to cause the south to secede. When he ultimately did abolish slavery his motives were suspect and his statements leading up to that moment were cagey. You could accuse him of being a "politician that did the things politicians do" if you want. The reality is that we live in a political society and in deeply divided times you can only make the bold moves when they are politically viable.

On the other hand, I thought that a lot of the talk at the Democratic convention about Lincoln was a mistake. The Emancipator in Chief was after all our most divisive president. He presided over The Civil War for crying out loud. The danger with all that talk about Lincoln is that the wounds in the south have not yet healed. As Faulkner said: "In the South the past is not only not forgotten - it isn't even past."

I was really hoping that Al Gore would spend a little more time talking about Green Jobs than reminding us of the Civil War.

But if Obama brings together a bipartisan cabinet of adversaries with differing points of view and displays the same (sometimes slow but) steady hand in governing that he has in campaigning, I think he might be able to get us through to the end of this dark tunnel we now find ourselves in.

yeah i started to think about this CONSTITUTIONAL PARTY and like what i first read, but its also based upon some religious beliefs and more about the state regulating things, which in my opinion is tricky because it divides us further by state and the more you have different laws for different states the harder it is to control lawlessness. I think we should have division between religion and government because i am not a christian and shouldn't to have to follow those laws. Anyway back to the real subject of the Barack's 30 minute add, I thought it was good and liked how he ended it with the rally. He said he would take about his plans which he did but with not much detail, and I think spent too much time with people, but at the same time he speaks in terms of we not I. WE can work together he doesn't divide people by who is more american or less, there is a feeling of unity. Will he do everything he says? no one will be able to not Him or McCain realisticly, but I feel Obama really wants to work with the people andI think his plans are mcuh better for us. I just feel so inspired by hearing him and I feel a disconnect with McCain and Palin. When I see her its almost as if she believes SHE will be president and talks as such, there doesn't seem to be a unity between her and McCain.  Thats my thought

The hallf hour was done well - and was just intended to remind people of who Obama really is.  After all the noise and baloney from the other side, it's good to see Obama the person again.

Obama is for the constitution - as it was intended.  He is not about world domination, he's about making this country a more prosperous, safer, more fiscally responsible place where we can dare again to allow our "better angels" to rule our decisions.

He spent the money on the ads because so many lies have been spread about him.  He has tried to stay away from most of the name-calling &  mud slinging for the most part.  He has discouraged crowds from booing McCain or making disrespectful comments.  He has cited facts, though, and these facts have laid bare the weaknesses of the Republican platform and McCain's loyalties to GW Bush.

I have to say the reverse of Ronald Reagan's line - "I didn't leave the Republican party, it left me".  In the 70's and 80's I voted mostly Republican.   But many of the old "Dixie-crats" moved over and changed the priorities of the party - religious and social biases, lack of respect for knowledge and other cultures, attempts to disassociate our education with science, willingness to overspend into huge deficits to establish American military might while providing less and less to the regular citizens, tilting the tax system ever more in favor of the multinationals and the wealthy, attempting to control the electorate with fear and divisive rhetoric.

Obama reminds me of why I changed to Independent leaning Democrat.  Dreams and vision are not all realized - but we achieve nothing if we have no goals.  Better to set them too high, than not high enough.

At this point, I believe the election is actually being bought...

I had been leaning towards Obama, but the Obama Mania is forcing me away.

The 30 min. ad in the middle of the SuperBowl was too much. It felt like a do-good too long ad (kind of boring) for people that are already voting for him. I thought he was going to do something different than what he has already done. Maybe even getting more specific. The only thing he has been specific is the economy. Everything else, I don't know where he will fall cause he is either too broad, or refuses to make a commitment. So... I don't know what we will get.

On principles I saw his record, and they are not much like what I identify myself with.

I am atracted by his simple direct to the point promises though. But I am not sure he can deliver them. :(

I also saw McCain's record which is pretty impressive. His campaign hasn't been all that great. Obama has far superior campaigning skills... but...

Bush's campaign was highly direct, efficient and successful, and WHERE DID THAT GET US??

I do not believe all the liberal media bias, and the irresponsible comics about McCain Palin. I also do not fall flat for the adoration and worship of Obama either. I do think we should've had better candidates for this though...

So... this last 6 days... I've been leaning McCain/Palin and I believe most people are doing the same also because they believe that the media has been biased and for Obama.

Since the Obama Bubble is finally bursting with this ridiculous 30min ad along with incessant commercials on my TV. I'll be glad when it is over!

      Wildflower -

I would like to address your comment:

This is amazing how duped everyone is. Does anyone not think all these single parents and their kids taking from the system if bankrupting America. This subprime mess who borrowed the money?  If whatever company you work for if 40% your clients did not pay do you think you would have a company

First off, why would you target single parents and their kids as the guilty parties here?  Are you trying to tell me that because of their personal "situation", they are less deserving than a 2 parent household?  Personally, I came from a single parent household.  My mother worked her butt off raising me and my younger brother.  She made diddly-squat as a working woman in the 70's & 80's.  She worked a part-time job at times too.  My brother and I both started working at a very early age and we helped pay for our own school clothes and saved money for our first cars and spending money for college.  My mother paid off our home and a condominium, 3 vehicles and worked up until she was 79 years old and never received ASSISTANCE from anyone (she was too proud).  The only reason she quit working was because she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's (God Bless her).

I really don't understand why everyone assumes the middle class is full of nothing but lazy people, popping out one child after another, and the whole time outstretching their arm for a handout?!!  If you are fortunate to be in a stable financial situation, good for you.  That still does not give anyone the right to second guess why someone else can't function the same way.  There are a million different case scenarios as to why someone might be struggling (especially, within the past 8 years).

My opinion would be, IF the middle class recieves a break and those breaks put a little bit more money in everyone's pocket, what do you think they would do with that money?  The will spend it!  They will put it back INTO the economy, by buying clothing, food, replace their broken appliance,  buy much needed tires for their vehicle, pay their utilities, replace their leaking roof or hotwater tank, buy growing junior a full size bed instead of a twin, have that root canal procedure (to cover the "out-of-pocket"), etc.

Who then benefits from those monies?  The business (and their employees) who provided the service.  And when the demand for these things increase, what does that mean?  Those businesses will need to hire more employees and/or new businesses will enter the market to maintain the demand for their services & their product.  It would also provide the added benefit of competitive costs/fees for those products and services, because the demand would eliminate some monopolies and force the businesses to compete for OUR business.  It's the very basics of economics and it's called "economic equilibrium".

I just don't understand why anyone (with a rational mindset) would label Obama's plan with that nasty "S" word?  To me, it's pretty simple . . . this country and our economy could be HEALTHY and prosper once again.

"If you watched Barack Obama's 30 minute ad, I would think at the very least you would feel hopeful that a presidential candidate actually gets us and really cares about our country.  It was great!"

I thought McCain's comment was interesting:

"The campaign of Republican nominee John McCain released a short statement afterward, saying: “As anyone who has bought anything from an infomercial knows, the sales job is always better than the product. Buyer beware.

To Bob, Why did you even turn it on? I'm not for McCain, I don't waste my time listening to him. you are just looking for reasons to criticize Obama. Give it up!

To Chad, you was near leaning towards Obama, you are just trying to get undeciders to vote for McCain. Like Palin, Joe! Is this you McCain?

To Flash, Stop! comparing Obama to poor people. I believe it was white people who started welfare, blame  uncle tom!

To republicangeneration, You was not for Obama, you are, like your buddy, trying to swing undeciders! Bush messed up the economy, McCain supported him 90% of the time. Never has anything to say because he thinks like Bush. So like a child, he wasts time and money Biti!!!!!

To wonderfulpolitician, You use a term like worship. Worship no one but God! If you took time out to know God, you wouldn't be so angry with Obama! Obama is one of God's creations, as all of us. Are you white? It's mostly the white Americans that feel they are superior over black Americans, that are really angry. Slavery is over, GET OVER YOURSELF! It should of never happened!

To Sue Meikle, If you are so mad that Obama got that much support, then why didn't you pull out your check book to help him? Bushs ideas through McCain are so great for the country, can't you afford to support your candidate? Don't complain then , support them!

To E. Price, whatever, Stop wasting time with your baggering, VOTE FOR WHATS HONORABLE! VOTE OBAMA! How can you honor two air heads, that basically even disappointed their own political party.

To Andy Black, another McCain wasting time, energy, space with lies. You can become a newspaper columnist, you can get a job at star or the Enquirer.

To all you McCain supporters, you all sound like babies, were you all sulking and rolling your eyes too, when you wrote your comments? Grow up! THIS IS NOT A WHITE WORLD! Andy aren't you just furious your last name is "Black"wood, why haven't you changed your last name?

Maybe on second thought, it's time to dig out the white sheets and hoods. Since it was the Republicans who faught against slavery, would you mind sending me yours, Mary? Could you also send directions on the correct way to wear it? What kind of wood is best for burning? Also, do you have any chants that you can recommend?

Go Obama! Wonderful to see intelligence on T.V.

Sorry, that wasn't intelligence - it was a hallmark card, it was over the top, it was cheesy and fake, it was the final straw for the undecided - "Obama" had already become such an obnoxious name overheard by voters thanks to the media, and himself that his "infomercial" (if you want to call it that - it contained little information) finally was the one drink of him that sent people puking. No, it was more like smothering than anything. The theme of his campaign has been to brainwash, so it (the commercial) was designed very well if you consider that.

So far he has his followers believing that a law degree passes as a degree in economics - where in the Senate he failed miserably on voting for / against economic issues.

So far he has his followers believing that he is running against George W. Bush - not McCain - a strategic distraction from McCain's legendary service to this nation. McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time? Well how about 80% of the time for Obama? Check his record yet? - or are you so caught up in the emotionally charged, tear jerking, shouting pleas to hope and stand and believe with him that you feel to good to feel that need? If that is the case, you need a church - not Obama.

So far he has his followers fired up over his different name, and appearance, and his being oppressed over his uniqueness - RACIST POLITICAL TACTICS. Thanks to that "feel sorry for me" stump speech there will be groves of sympathetics marching to the polls to vote for "the first black President in history" and not "the President with the tools to do the job".

So far he has his followers believing that he is the answer to the economic woes they feel, when he lied about his decision to accept public funding - and squandered hundreds of millions of dollars (4-1 over McCain) only to be neck and neck with him? What a genius - McCain has done as much with 1/4 of the money - what could he do for this country with 1/4 of our tax dollars? $$$Obama$$$: Spend baby spend...$$$$

Time to get real Obama supporters. The ride was fun, but it's crunch time. It is time to deeply consider everything about the two men and make the sound choice. Not one of novelty or popularity - who has served you and I for almost 30 years? Who nearly died for our freedoms? Who has went against his own in the name of what he thought was right? I have seen Obama, he is skilled at rousing the soul and misting the eyes - but be smart America - think with your brain, not with your heart.

JackB, I can't help but wonder if this is what might be going through some of the minds of undecided voters right now.

At this second, I'm listening to Mr. Obama on television claim things about Mr. McCain that are just not true. "He's called me every name in the book, every name in the book!" Oh, really, I wonder. (Like we'd be inclined to say on Newsvine: "Oh yeah? Cite it." I submit the same to Mr. Obama.)

For all of Mr. McCain's failings and mistakes in his 72 years, I honor his willingness to own every one of them. In his own words at the RNC and at Saddleback Church before that, he made it clear that he knew (that we knew) that he hasn't been a perfect man. He admitted how, as a young soldier that he was basically full of himself. He would later realize, after being captured then tortured, sick, and imprisoned for five and a half years, that he had a breaking point. Suddenly, he said, that he wasn't so tough anymore. When asked, McCain would also say, and without excuse, that his greatest moral failing was the demise of his first marriage. Not that many 72-year-old were raised to pour their guts out, or "air their dirty laundry," as they say, and certainly not on national television. But McCain chose wisely to do just that, and without any melodrama. Long after he had repented for his own failings, he and ex-wife Carol remain amicable to this day. Strangely, it's the public that refuses to allow him mercy or forgiveness for a private matter of atonement.

When I see McCain speak in his most comfortable element, one on one, I see 22 years in the Senate, day in and day out, doing his thing. Although quite confident, I don't see a show horse who is more comfortable in the spotlight than not. Instead, I think of him more but rather a workhorse to get things done in Washington. And I see someone who is very aware of the most underrated resource there is time. In his mission to build upon our nation's legacy, perhaps he underestimates his own.

to those complaining about the use of funds:

those are funds donated specifically for such use, from individual contributors who contributed their own money so that things like this could be done to help their chosen candidate win.

compare this to mccain's taxpayer funded campaign, which has used all of our money to spread divisiveness and petty mudslinging.  and you are upset about what obama uses his donated campaign for?  weird.  find something else to complain about... this is a dead end.

It would have been nice if Obama had given some of those millions back to the people who gave it to him, instead of spending it on a half hour of talk.  Then, I might have believed he is really for the people! How ridiculous! I wouldn't be surprised if most of the money came from Hollywood. Yes, the land of "I am a billionaire, and you're not."  I am so sick of millions of dollars dictating a winner in the presidential race! What has this country come to? The media has totally disappointed me this election also. They can make you a hero, or they can make you a loser. Why, on earth, do we even pay attention to what they say? No matter who wins this election, I just hope that the United States of America will remain a united nation,  will cure our problems here at home , show the other nations that we take care of our people first, and quit letting the "almighty" dollar dictate out lives. As in the past, I have heard that a candidate will help the "Middle Class" by lowering their taxes. Well, I have been in the middle class for many years now, and not once has a candidate helped me out! There has never been a "trickle down."  You are either rich, or you are poor. There is no such thing as a "Middle Class!"  So, for all of you who have "listened" to the candidates, not the Media,  I hope you realize who is the most qualified for the job of President of the United States. Not the one who satisfies your ego, but the one who will take care of everyone.

It's not public funding so why would you care? Did you give money to him? I did and I think he is spending hmy money wisely. Only those who gave him money can complain about how he spends it.

At least he is not spending it by bringing out Joe the Plumber on tour. Yeah give Joe the Moron a bus to travel in. Give $150,000 to Palin to buy clothes. If he is so worried about the economy and spending in Washington he would have gone to JC Penney and gotten her suits.

DB Akron is hitting on something I have said for the last 15 years, the heck with foreign free trade, treat imported goods as a luxury, charge import tariffs and luxury taxes on them. This will in turn make domestically produced products more competitive, and create good paying jobs so Americans will be able to afford them. In this country we like bargains, but, is the loss of jobs to cheap foreign goods a bargain? I think not! I can't understand the confusion many have with Obama's tax concept, so, here is a viable scenerio: Raise tax 28%? on companies making over $250,000, which will just about double their tax. Most of the electricity generated comes from coal, so, we have doubled the federal tax on coal. Since there is only so much coal, it is finite, not infinite, the coal producers know they only have a certain amount, eventually it will run out. This underlines the need for them to make their profit, so, since their costs went up, they decide to cut production(loss of jobs), in order to increase demand for coal. This doubles the price of coal, which in turn, puts the electric power generating companies in competition with the iron industry for what coal is available. Since the iron mills must compete with foreign iron mills who are not saddled with these costs, the U.S. iron mills close(loss of jobs). The electric power companies get the coal to run their power plants, but by now, it costs them 3 times as much, so, they raise the rates on electricity. Steel mills require an enormous amount of electricity, it is a major cost in producing steel, with a 400% increase in their eletricity bill, they are no longer competitive in the steel market and have to close their mills(loss of jobs). Since these big businesses are no longer paying employees a livable wage, most of them have no choice but to go on the public dole, which in turn requires the taxes to be raised to pay for them. Guess who gets hit? The middle class! The middle class becomes the lower middle class, who can pay 4 times as much for utilities, and higher taxes? Everything migrates downward. Now, those who invested their 401k's in iron, steel, or utilities, guess what your dividends will be? Zilch! This is only 1 of many similar scenerios, practically every industry would be affected under Obama's tax plan, it is only the tip of the iceburg. Robin Hood is fiction, there is no such thing as spreading the wealth around. Obama's tax plan has one and only one end result, to make the middle class poor, to make the US a third world country! This conservative Democrat has studied economics, I know for a fact it is always the middle class that pays, that has been proven throughout history. The way to 'spread the wealth around' is not to spread it, but to create wealth. No President, or elected official can do that for you! But, they can create an environment where it is possible to do so. Look at history, many examples, I'll give one. James Oliver, born 8/28/1823, immigrated to the US from Scotland in1835 settling in Mishawaka, IN in 1840, working as an apprentice in an iron foundry. Thru hard work, integrity and thoughtfulness, invented the chilling process for iron, to make plows hard on the outside that would wear well, but flexible enough not to be brittle. Investing in his invention, at time risking all the little he had, created an company second to none, the Oliver Chilled Plow Works, of South Bend, IN making him a multimillionaire by his death in 1908. Not only did James Oliver create wealth, he began with nothing in a strange land, in his lifetime he provided gainful employment for thousands. His invention has evolved into the 'Raydex' plow, is still produced, and considered state of the art today! His company is now a part of the multinational conglomerate, 'Agco'. Under Obama's tax plan, this simply would have not been possible! So much for my 2 cents worth!!! This Democrat is voting for the alternative, McCain/Palin 2008!!

Obama is a liar as he signed a pledge re. funding and broke it.  If we are unfortunate enough to see him elected, he will break his pledge for a middle class tax cut just as Bill Clinton did....recall, Clinton came on the air (they even had television then, Mr. Biden) after he was elected, but even before he was inaugurated, and said that he had tried to give the cut (the main plank of his platform) but he just couldn't.  How nice.

Sarah Palin's clothes were bought by the party after her nomination.  She isn't wearing a parka to Orlando to run for mayor of Wasilla.  $50,000 of those clothes were returned unworn.  Imagine how much the remaining  $100,000 would bring at auction...but I have heard the plan is to donate them to charity...then the charity may become enriched if it auctions the clothes.

Tell me, how does this $100,000 compare with the $400,000 in jet fuel necessary to fly Obama to Hawaii last weekend...a private, nonpolitical visit to his sick (haven't heard anything about her since) grandmother.  But he may have made it a political trip, shoring up a blockade to prevent US...and I mean all of us...from seeing his birth certificate, which he has taken extreme means to hide.

Obama said he would sit down and talk with the Republican nominee if he was chosen and argee on terms for public financing. Since there was no agreement between him and McCain he broke no pledge.

Go back and look at the quotes regarding the public financing statements.

What ever it takes right now, we get rid of the republican party for the next 3 or 4 decates. So that money is not wasted , it's a bloodless revolution baby, the working Americans finally taking their country back, which was relentless butchered over the last 8 years. And this has to change.

Ginny, I truely  wish that you do find a good job, work hard, and achieve the American Dream. I don't know if John McCain will help make this possible, but I do know BO will not. Change can be good or bad! Walked off a cliff can give you Change, I wouldn't necessarily think it would be good. In my 56 years nearly every candidate for POTUS has made big promises, I can't recall many that delivered. Clinton messed it up, 8 good years interrupted the economic cycle, and gave us runaway foreign free trade, Bush inherited the mess and couldn't straighten it out. Clinton knew about Osama bin Laden, but did nothing, which led to 9/11, at a time when our military had been downsized, by again Clinton. This made our defense less effective, we didn't have enough armies, and had to use the reserves. That is all recorded in history. If taxing the wealthy will create wealth, I have a bridge for sale. If you believe BO's tax concept will work, fine, it's your money, spend it any way you wish. Then go find a poor person to work for, and see when or if you get a paycheck.

Tell me how are big corporations suppose to continue earning money when those of us who are suppose their products can't afford them.  We have tried that "trickle down" effect and it didn't work because no one made sure that while big corporations were getting the tax breaks, it was also creating the jobs and keeping them here in America.

We are already working for bankrupt corporations and we already don't have a paycheck.

tbsopion- Do you really think for a second that $1,100 from Obama is going to change your life? First thing that will happen is that the price of everything that you buy is going to go up, not only because the owner from the factory that made the product is going to raise the price, but the dollar won't be worth as much...not when everyone is getting welfare from the United States!

Chris5209 - so you won't give someone who wants to be President of your country thirty minutes of your life? That explains why you can't discern truth from fiction, that explains why people like you have had such a large hand in getting this country in the mess it's in now -  because you can't be bothered, and of course one would assume you know everything already. Your loss, though, you missed seeing what it takes to be a great statesman. I can only delight in the image of McCain crapping in his pants right now, wishing he were able to be that presidential. You should be embarrasses for yourself.

In response to Chris5209. Obama wants to be President to CHANGE this nation into a Marxist society. His own statements confirm this "

“To avoid being mistaken for a sellout, I chose my friends carefully. The more politically active black students. The foreign students. The Chicanos. The Marxist professors and structural feminists.”

Any taxes you pay is spreading the wealth. Do you not know where taxes go? To projects that build roads and bridges, pay for Social Security (which the Republicans called Socialism), schools, security, emergency resources, Medicare (another item that Republicans saw as Socialism), military.

Damn I sure do not want any Socialism! That is the downfall of the country and sure will distribute your taxes the wrong way. Which do you want to give up first? Emergency resources?

For all of you who don't care...don't care to vote. If you don't care about what is happening I do not want any of you making decisions that have to do with my life.

If you don't care then do not complain when we slip into a big recession and the country collapses.

Obama admits he was drawn to, influenced and had his political views shaped by Marxist professors

Anyone who draws your conclusion from this statement is seriously brain dead. There is nothing in that statement that a serious person would ever be able to argue yor point on.

The rest of the statement says after looking at their views he moved on. Knowledge is king and the only way to get it is to listen to all points of view not walk around thinking only you have the right answers. We have a present president who went down that raod and look at us now.

We studied Marx and Lenin and several othe alternitive governments when I attended a Catholic school. Does that make every student that did a Marxist? Your logic is seriously flawed

If Obama wants to redistribute the wealth he can start by giving away all his yearly income, now and in the future and keep 40000 tax free like the rest of most of America and see how its like to be an average American. This socialist ideal of redistributing the wealth is good, as long as the Democrats in power dont have to give away their money. All politicians suck, and this batch in both parties is no different than the past. My only question is are we going to get a second lesson in peanut farming from the democrats. Remember the history of the 70s. Still. GOD BLESS AMERICA>

And trickle down economics has worked well when?

Normal thinking is that when the middle and lower class have more money they are able to spend it and also pay bills. For some reason I think that when the middle and lower class spend money they buy stuff from small business and corporations. Since buying things brings money to corporations and then to the big wigs in the corporations money moves up the ladder. Wierd, I do not know where I got that idea.

econ 101 states that corps (and banks it seems) borrow more than they save as a whole and that consumers save more than they borrow as a whole and that consumer spending is what keeps all of this going on. We consumers represent 2/3 of the economy. However, we consumers include all classes not just low and middle. Any redistribution of wealth by the govt is socialism and has never worked. To vote on that is again one who is so uneduated!

I never said that consumers were only lower and middle class, but a mojority of the country is lower and middle class. You have to built up the masses before you benefit the few to be able to make an economy work. Seems that in the lower and middle class now  no one has money so no one is spending so businesses are collapsing. If the lower and middle class cannot spend money on gas or food then even more businesses will collapse and the government will have to bail out more business that we have to pay for.

Seems like the tax policies that are "working" now aren't working. McCain is so proud that he voted with Bush 90% of the time (his own words) and will continue to only care about those who he considers to be rich...the ones the make $5 million or more (McCain stated that to be rich you have to make $5 million). Gosh I want to be poor and make $1 million a year.

I will vote for someone who understands what it is like to struggle and how to balance what is good for the people with what is good for business. The people need tax cuts not businesses and those making millions of dollars.

I will gladly go back to what life was like under Clinton. Jobs and businesses grew and so did the quality of life for those of all classes.

a large majority of obama's campaign donations have come from ordinary citizens with a vested and impassioned interest in seeing obama succeed.  this is a pure form of civic activity motivated from the ground up, and you people are disturbed by it?  i guess the power of the people must be frightening you to the core right about now.  i think its a beautiful thing to see such public support mobilized toward such goals.  really, any civic minded individual should be awed by what has happened.

DB, John McCain doesn't run Barack Obama's campaign.  When McCain said jump, you thought Barack would say how high?  He didn't agree to his town hall meetings either.  Get over it and quit your bi!tching!  What you don't understand is that Barack is forward looking.  McCain said he was going to run a clean campaign.  Do you see Barack crying when he didn't?  No, he had to deliver the smack down.  He planned ahead knowing he was going to be dragged through the mud.  He's been called every name in the book and I'm glad he had enough money to drown it out.  McCain has no one to blame but himself.  He's run the worst campaign in US polictics and is going to drag the entire Republican party down the toilet with him.  He was putting himself first instead of his country and his party.  You're loyal now but you won't be on November 5th because then the blame game will start.  You're going to have 3 choices about who will lead your party.  Palin/Joe the Plumber for 2012, Mitt Romney (who reminds me of Damian in the Omen 3), or one of the Republicans who spoke out about the Maverick's recklessness.  You guys fight it out while the intellectuals steer the country back to it's position as a world power with the blessing of the international community.

We have Barack Obama.  You have Joe the Plumber.  Joe the (unlicensed) Plumber.  Joe the (no tax paying) Plumber.  I won't mention Bible Spice's many attributes since it would be rubbing your nose in it.

Did you guys know that McCain is campaiging with JTP?  WTF???  McCain should be run out of time for the damage he's caused.  I want to send him a thank you note.

Obama has more money simply because he has more support - the same as a movie makes more money if more people want to see it. Obama is very simply much more popular than McCain and that is why he will win. Same goes for the size of the crowds going out to see them - Obama gets 100,000 people to a rally - McCain much less. Let's see ahead in the polls, more money from supporters, bigger crowds - see where I am going with this?

Obama said that he would speak to the person who gets the nomination and then come up with an agreement in regards to only taking public funding. There was no agreement so he did not lie.

"McCain co-sponsored the campaign finance laws and abided by it including using the public money and limits.  Obama said he would, and then he didn't."

You can can that too, Mccain's people slid through a loophole and took out a loan...if it was straight forward it's a violation of the rules but they backdoored it through the RNC.

McCain tries to make this about Obama. It is not about Obama. Its about me, and my family. My nieghbors and my small biz. McCain has been tested and FAILED. It is time for new blood. There is no way Obama can mess up as bad as Bush has. Obama is much smarter than McCain, and Bush.

Yes, exactly, if OBAMA wants to redistribute the wealth, he can redistribute his own wealth to the many that need it, and the rest of the wealthy Democrats can do the same. The rest of us that work in a smaller business, like I do have no interest in wealth redistribution, we are too busy working hard to pay our bills and saving for our futures. How much did OBAMA make last year and how much did MC CAIN make last year.  Let them keep 30 or 40 thousand after tax and live like most of America does.

Freedom - we have been redistributing our wealth from the bottom to the top at the fastest pace in history under the republicans - it has not worked. We are much poorer today than we were under Clinton's administration. It is time to give the middle class the tax breaks and let them grow the economy. Vote for hope not fear - vote for Obama.

When Bush took office the ratio of CEO salary to average worker was 100-1 it now stands at 275-1. 50% of Americans make 32,000 dollars or less. That is Approximately 100 million Americans. The net worth of the fortune 400 people in America is 1.5 Trillion dollars. That's right 400 people have a net worth equal to 50% of what 100 million people make in a year.

Now I would not have a problem with the people at the top making twice as much as  they do if they reinvested in America. They are not doing that investing in Mexican plants and India plants and Chinese plants that do not hire Americans. Obama wants to bring those jobs home for Americans and invest here not abroad. Thats what redistribution means not some sinister sound bite that does not understand what he is proposing.

The sad part about this is as we get stronger in our base structure guess who will benefit the most from it? The rich of course.

The Republican Party and many in their ranks are just mad that a Democrat ran a better campaign and raised more money than they could! It was just fine with them when Bush and his moneyed cronies had a sizeable war funding chest and they really supported the lunatic and his fanatic friends when the fear and smear tactics came into play!
McCain and Palin are losers with nothing to offer this country but more of the same crap we have all suffered under for the past 8 years!

If Barack Obama wants to now help the middle class, why did he spend 20 years in a church  that preaches disavowing middle class values?  I smell charred mouse meat.

Sen. Obama, who will very well be our next President, reminds me of the Wizard of Oz.  Fabulous  marketing, spectacular special effects and slights of hand but nothing behind the curtain.

Hey America, if you want change you'll get it but be careful what you wish for.

Obviously Americans with real problems, problems faced by millions of us, mean nothing to those of you who viewed the ad and are protesting it simply because of its cost.  I'm sure that Obama would have preferred to have given the funds to charity instead, as well, but that would not get the message out there to Americans who only get their information from the television.  And yes, there are many of those.  We need to get him in the White House before he is going to be able to really help out those charities.

You can't tell me that if McCain had the resources that he wouldn't have done the same thing. Don't give me the whiney, "Obama promised to use public funds." McCain made an even bigger promise not to run a negative campaign. There was not one negative word made about McCain in Obama's prime time ad. That is admirable.

Mom of 4, the only times that Obama has been negative are in direct response to the endless negativity of the McCain campaign.  One must defend one's integrity when it is constantly being challenged.  Had McCain not begun a negative campaign, I truly doubt that Obama would have used any negative tactics at all.  He is much too honorable for that.

Does it count as negative when an Obama ad misstates McCain's position knowingly?...I consider that a lie to get votes.  Example:  "will tax your health care for the first time"  McCain's plan is structured to offset personal health premiums with a TAX CREDIT, improving the tax burden for the self-employed, taking nothing new from people who want to stay in their current employer plan.  To listen to Obama, you would think that McCain plans a tax increase re. health care.  This commercial, to me is not only negative by Obama but an outright lie.

What's a lie about it. Go to IRS.gov and look at the tax plans. McCain will tax health benefits.

Also a tax credit means you have to pay all the money out of pocket and hope to get some back with your tax return.

Have you looked at how much companies pay for each person or family for a year of health insurance? Since I am the one who pays the bills and does the contracts at my job and past jobs I know that it costs the employer for good insurance to pay around $8000 and 12000 per person to family.

To buy insurance on your own for a PPO for a family is about $600 a month and about $250 a month. That does not cover your out of pocket expenses before you meet your deductible. Deductibles are about $2000 on average. If you want a plan with maternity care you are going to go up at least $100 a month in your premium.

So a family will pay just for premiums at least $7200 a year. $5000 tax credit falls far short, even without counting the deductible and co-pays.

Gosh that is the plan I want! Let's see tax my health coverage and tax MORE of my money in taxes, or make me buy my own plan and pay average $600 a month out of pocket to have a huge deductible to pay off. Exactly what I can afford when making $2000 a month!

Colorado - it is true - not a lie in there.  McCain's plan gives a credit on one side - but taketh away by including all contributions made by your employer in taxable income.  This WOULD tax healthcare  expenses previously not taxed = increasing your taxable income. I can tell you are not a tax specialist.  McCain is counting on your lack of familiarity with the mess that is our tax code.

Mom of 4 - Obama has taken the high road throughout this campaign.  He said he would.  McCain said in April he would too, but abandoned his high ethical approach months ago.  McCain and Palin have done every smear tactic their lame team could invent.  They have done it so often, most folks don't even listen any more when this comes up.  Only a few times did Obama bring up the Keating 5 to counter attacks by McCain.  Obama has attacked McCain's policy positions - not his personal character.  This is not because McCain is without character flaws - it is because the issues are too important to focus on this 3rd grade name-calling.

So when he airs a 30 minute ad showing where he came from, his policies, and his wants for America they rather not look at the ad but watch Fox news to get a impartial spin on what was aired.  I usually get my information from the source.  That's what is wrong  with America.

I’m saying that people critical of Obama for BUYING airtime don’t acknowledge that McCain doesn’t have to BUY air time.. He has a whole Network (FoxNews) promoting him (McCain) and bashing Obama 24hrs a day…

I got and get my information from all sources, Rochell said “WISE UP AMERICA!!! tune in to FOX NEWS”. I tried that, as ONE of my sources, and it’s so IMPARTIAL, it’s not funny. I’ve watched them go 2 hours bashing Obama, then spend 30 minutes complaining about how the news media only says good things about Obama and nothing bad…? What is FoxNews if not part of the news media? Apparently they don’t watch or count their own network.   Also, I think one of the most important traits the president should have is being likeable. Foreign dignitaries and for that matter American citizens don’t want to deal with an A**Hole. NOT being a Republican, I didn’t know much about McCain until he appeared on the first debate. I’m sure he must have some likeable quality or he wouldn’t have made it that far in the Republican race, but my only exposure to McCain has been from his three debates and his campaign adds… NONE of those encounters have done anything – as far as I’m concerned – BUT portray him as an A**hole.

Obama promised initially to do as McCain does and use a publicly funded campaign (you know that box on your tax returns that asks you to donate money), but obviously Obama knew he could rake in the money if he went private. He was the first presidential candidate to ever agree to that so of course it raises questions. People are more than curious where over $650 million has come from. McCain has restrictions on the funds he is allowed to spend or as a penalty he has to pay any overages.

The fact that Obama's funds are more than suspect bother me. He has been investigated now several times for contributions from unknown overseas sources. Of course, he does not have to disclose any of this information until after the election which is pretty convenient for him and only then will he have to pay back illegal contributions. As for his $3 million commercial .... it's disgusting. All the Obama supporters I have spoken with are more than confident that he is going to win by a landslide. So if that's the case should the canvasing and constant barrage of Obama's face all over the TV be enough ? Was it really necessary to do a touchy feely infomercial when he already supposedly has this election in the bag ? It's shameless.

I have already voted and can say that McCain will do his best to represent this country, even if half of the people in it won't.

Robin may believe that Obama has better solutions for what ails this country.  The suits are not that great, and her car dealer mentions change every 3,000 miles....so I doubt if either factor was a game-changer.

My son has to escort his wife to her car each morning, drivebys are commonplace. Between the black gangs and the skinheads regular citizens are running to  the gun shops for guns to protect themselves.  Lots of folks believe they won't be able to buy a gun after Obama is elected. 2 days ago in Pomona Park a 65 year old man was killed in from  of his daughters moblile home. He was discovered by a neighbor at 12:00 pm. The police from his daughters valuables piled at the front door. They think it was  4 or 5 blacks who have hit several other counties.  There is a group of skinheads riding down hwy. 17 shotting guns at all hours of the day.  The locals are answering theseshots with their own. I don't feel the love here. It's really scarey here and the more visits he makes here the worse it gets. I pray we make it thru the next few days.

Once there are nothing but Dems ruining this country(not running) they will do nothing but spend, spend, spend and we are out  of money. And the ignoramos that said that 9/11 was Bushes fault, you are way to stupid to even allowed to vote.

O.B. is an egominical and we are in huge trouble if he wins. You will find me involved in a revolution, called "taxation without representation". We work very hard for our money, 7 days a week and I will not allow some lazy  moron who votes for O.B. to get benefits from what we work so hard for. Dems are nothing but uneducated people who want a hand out

Then I remembered that I had stayed at A Holiday Inn Express last night and was too brilliam]nt to vote so stupidly. Imagine that.

Suffered the last eight years? What about the grand plans of the Demo congress that promised big changes in the first 100 days? What did they do beside have hearings about steroid use in sports, now that is a National Emergency! Barney Frank told us just months before the collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac they are strong and would be a good investment, right! Millions lost Billions. Obama got $160,000 from Fannie and Freddie with just two years in office. Let's hear it for Obama Al Biden.

He didn't say he would provide more funding or that he was going to help offset the costs to special education or free/reduced lunch. His plan, to have every parent read to their kids 30 minutes a night. Woohoo ... great plan if both mommy and daddy weren't out working to pay the bills. I agree that parents should definitely invest more into their child's education, but to plan your educational policy around that was just silly. Telling parents what they already know is insulting and he isn't going from house to house to make sure we all do it.

I would love to hear about more affordable secondary education and not more taxes. Today when I voted there were 4 issues on the ballot in our district to raise taxes by $9.9 million and $80 million respectively to build 2 new schools along with a request to allow the school district to go into debt for funding. Obama had his education handed to him by those "investing in his future" and both of his children have very large college funds ($100,000 and $250,000 in his 2008 financial disclosure). It's not impossible with a help, especially those with an agenda.

We will see more war to help Haliburton. We will see him buy mortgages at full price and people will be inflamed. Homes will go under and we will have the biggest government housing project in history. We will see nations turn their backs from us disheartened by Bush politics and lack of negotiation. We will see distent amoungst the American people we have never seen before. There will be riots in the streets and sadness in the air. We will see education take a backburner and the US fall behind the world 50 years. We will see the US in debt for billions to other nations. We will see our police powers trimmed to dangerous levels and terrorists smiling. We will see the rich with new boat and the middle class fall into poverty. We will see the jobless rate soar and new jobs go overseas. We will see really bad things thanks to Mccain.
