Poll: Obama holds significant lead

advertisement

NEW YORK — With just a day left until Election Day, Democratic Sen. Barack Obama holds a statistically significant advantage over Republican Sen. John McCain in the race for the White House, according to the final NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll before the election.

Obama leads McCain by eight points nationally among likely voters, 51 to 43 percent, which is down three points from his 53-to-42 lead in the poll nearly two weeks ago.

To put Obama’s eight-point edge into perspective, the final NBC/WSJ survey before the 2004 presidential election had President Bush with a slim one-point lead over John Kerry, 48 to 47 percent.

Bush went on to win that election, 51 to 48 percent.

'A hand that is hard to beat'
“The McCain campaign is going to have to thread the needle to pull out a victory on Election Day,” says Republican pollster Neil Newhouse, who conducted the survey with Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart. “The campaign is facing an uphill battle.”

Hart puts it this way: “The results of this survey say it is going to take more than rain, sleet or snow to derail the Obama express. He is holding all the high cards, and that is a hand that is hard to beat.”

Looking inside the numbers, Obama leads McCain among African Americans (90 percent to 3 percent), Latinos (68 to 27), 18- to 34-year-olds (59 to 38), independents (48 to 38), blue-collar voters (51 to 44), suburban voters (49 to 44) and Catholics (49 to 46).

McCain, meanwhile, has the advantage among evangelicals (78 percent to 19 percent), those 65 years old and older (53 to 40), white men (54 to 42) and white women (48 to 47).

According to the poll — which was conducted of 1,011 likely voters from Nov. 1-2, and which has a margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points — the respondents seem to have made up their minds in the presidential contest.

Eighty-eight percent of Obama voters say they will “definitely” vote for the Illinois senator, 6 percent say they will “probably” vote for him and another 6 percent say they are “leaning” toward him.

By comparison, 83 percent of McCain voters say they will definitely vote for the Arizona Republican, 9 percent say they will probably vote for him and 7 percent say they’re leaning toward him.

Obama preferred to handle economy, poll says
As in the last NBC/WSJ survey, this poll suggests that Obama’s lead has been fueled in part by perceptions that he would better handle the current economic crisis, as well as voters’ increased comfort with the idea of him as president.

Forty-two percent say they have either a great deal of confidence or quite a bit of confidence that Obama will be able to get the country’s economy back on track. That is compared with just 27 percent who say that about McCain.

In addition, 58 percent are “optimistic and confident” or “satisfied and hopeful” that Obama would do a good job if he becomes president. Forty-six percent said that of McCain.

And what’s more, an equal number of respondents (57 percent) believe that they identify with McCain’s and Obama’s values and background. McCain has always led Obama on this question in previous NBC/WSJ surveys.

“Obama seems to broken through on the values attribute,” Newhouse says. “For the first time in our polling, a majority of white voters believe Obama has a background and set of values they identify with.”

Some other findings in the poll:

I could go on.

WILDWONDERFUL,

How about those of us that will pay more in taxes under the Obama plan but feel he is by far the better candidate, can we vote?  Your distortion that borders on lies, is that acceptable in your character?  By the way you never answered me when I asked you if you made more than $250,000.  I answered your questions but you did not answer mine, why is that?  You can keep your hate that is something you have to live with, I prefer to be fair to all Americans.

Wildwonderful --

Are you perhaps referring to those in the Appalachia?  The unmarried mothers living in their side-by-side with four kids from four different fathers...collecting food stamps with one hand and carrying their Bible in the other?  I'm familiar with Wild Wonderful West Virginia, and you really should look in your own backyard before spewing your racist hate.  Your own neighboring state of Kentucky has a meth problem beyond belief.  But for some, manufacturing meth is their way of making a living since there *ARE NO JOBS* in any of those states -- OH, KY, WV!  You're a racist.  Go away.  We all find you annoying.

Women have finally got a shot to get a woman that really has the guts and the brains to do something in the White House and they fell for the Rhetoric and Propaganda the Media and the Dems put out and many will vote for a do nothing Senator from Illinois and a party that cast aside a woman as a candidate. McCain made a great choice in Palin and she has done a great job in Alaska.  I guess many have not heard from the left wing media that Palin has an 85% approval rating as Governor, the highest of any sitting Governor in the US.

Interviews of her supposed friends and neighbors have shown that they have had their eyes open and no longer support her even for Governor of her state. Now we see the aged old welfare queen dug up from old Newt Reagan and others. Here are the facts folks it a scameroonie... Realize of course these figures are based on average American taxpayers so thes number are way high for people making lees than 250,000

  1. Fact: Spending for corporate welfare programs outweighs spending for low-income programs by more than three to one: $167 billion to $51.7 billion (source: Aid for Dependent Corporations, from the Corporate Welfare Project and How Much Do We Spend on Welfare?, from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, FY 95 figures)
  2. Fact: Total federal spending on a safety net for the poor costs the average taxpayer about $400 a year, while spending on corporate welfare programs costs the same taxpayer about $1400 a year. (source: CBO figures)
  3. Fact: Over 90% of the budget cuts passed by the last Congress cut spending for the poor — programs that ensure food for the needy, housing for the homeless, job training for the unemployed, community health care for the sick. (source: Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Bearing Most of the Burden, 1996).
  4. Fact: Only 3.9% of total federal outlays go to programs that solely benefit poor people.

Welfare programs for corporations do not play by the same rules as welfare for people. Welfare benefits for individuals and families are limited by strict eligibility requirements and time limits, while corporations get corporate welfare benefits regardless of wealth or accountability.

  1. Fact: Individuals and families must demonstrate need to receive benefits, while corporations with billions of dollars in annual income remain on the federal dole.
  2. Fact: Most social spending is in the form of discretionary spending, which is scrutinized in the annual budget negotiating process in Congress; most corporate welfare programs are in the form of tax expenditures, which go on and on since they are not subject to annual review by Congress.

…and we already know of the multi billion dollar bailout that American tax payers are in the midst of shelling out to save some of Wall Streets most profitable companies. The largest Government handout in the History of the United States.

Figures are from the OMB

Average pre-tax incomes in 2006 jumped by about $60,000 (5.8 percent) for the top 1 percent of households, but just $430 (1.4 percent) for the bottom 90 percent, after adjusting for inflation, according to a new update in the groundbreaking series on income inequality by economists Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez.  Their analysis of newly released IRS data shows that in 2006, the shares of the nation’s income flowing to the top 1 percent and top 0.1 percent of households were higher than in any year since 1928.

Piketty and Saez’s data series on income inequality, based on IRS files, is uniquely valuable because it provides detailed information on income gains at the top of the income scale and extends back to 1913. [1]

The new data show:

  • 2006 marked the fourth straight year in which income gains at the top outpaced those among the rest of the population.  Since 2002, the average inflation-adjusted income of the top 1 percent of households has risen 42 percent, whereas the average inflation-adjusted income of the bottom 90 percent of households has risen about 4.7 percent.  (See Table 1.)

  • As a result, the share of the nation’s income flowing to the top 1 percent has increased sharply, rising from 15.8 percent in 2002 to 20.0 percent in 2006.  Not since 1928, just before the Great Depression, has the top 1 percent held such a large share of the nation’s income.  (See Figure 1.)  In 2000, at the peak of the 1990s boom, the top 1 percent received 19.3 percent of total income in the nation

RonH the absolute worst thing that could happen to this country is Satan Palin anywhere near the White House

You -- like Chaos McCain -- assume all women are stupid and mindless and all you have to do is put a women in front of us and we'll go for it'

Palin no longer has a high approval rating -- try 50 / 50 at best - in Alaska -- in case you have not heard she was found guilty of abuse of power; is being tried for expense account fraud; tried to ban books in Wasilla; fires anyone who says no to her.....and now is sporting the people's wardrobe at $150K+

who is going to repay 6-Pack's $25K+ and counting hair and make-up tab? Edwards had to repay the party for $800 in haircuts

fundamentalism -- Palin and her kin -- are mindless, evil and a danger to America and to freedom

fundamentalist believe any means justify their own personal end goals -- they believe they are a sort of super race and can do what they want to when and how they desire to do it -- whether they live in Afghanistan and pretend to follow Islam or live in the US and pretend to follow Christ they are ungodly and dangerous to freedom

fundamentalism is witch hunting

fundamentalism is the antithesis of freedom and democracy

fundamnetalism cannot live in a climate of deep thinking, questioning, high education it can only grow in the darkness of ignorance, fear and hatred

NO THANKS

VOTE FOR FREEDOM

vote for the constitutional law scholar

vote for America and for the world

VOTE OBAMA

without getting into name calling , do you people who THINK you are going to get a tax cut inder obama realize that the projections are based on the current tax base. They are calculated as they stand now WITH the BUsh tax cuts. What you're not seeing is that obama is going to let those cuts lapse, and then his figures go out the window! I will be paying aproximately 4500 more in 2010 than I did last year and I only made 100,000. It seems the majority of the people who are voting obama think there is magically going to be gas in their cars, money in their pockets and a mortgage that can never go under!! It also seems that a great majority of his base is people afraid to go out and make a real mark in this world and want those of us who work harder and harder for our families to also pay for theirs. All I ask is what happens when those of us who actually produce in this country decides there is no reason to make more just to keep the same amount? When I give, it iws from my heart the way it is intended to be not because YOU think I owe you something. Before you vote tomorrow PLease just think about this one great quote from Thomas Jefferson " A government big enough to give you everything, is strong enough to take it away" Please do not be fooled by this fraud. Or, be fooled and say goodbye to the 1st, 2nd and 5th ammendments and most likely Isreal as well.

Wow -- fear and ignorance abounds...  This is from the Tax Policy Center(dot)org:

Both candidates prefer to compare their plans to the "current policy" baseline, which would extend the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts and indefinitely extend an indexed AMT "patch"—and collect nearly $3.6 trillion less than under current law over the coming decade. Against that baseline, Obama would raise revenues by about $600 billion over the decade, while McCain would lose $600 billion. But choice of baseline doesn’t change how the proposals would affect the budget picture; without substantial cuts in government spending, both plans would sharply increase the national debt. Including interest costs, Obama’s tax plan would boost the debt by $3.5 trillion by 2018. McCain’s plan would increase the debt by $5 trillion on top of the $2.3 trillion increase that the Congressional Budget Office forecasts for the next decade (see Summary Deficit Table).

The Obama plan would reduce taxes for low- and moderate-income families, but raise them significantly for high-bracket taxpayers (see Figure 2). By 2012, middle-income taxpayers would see their after-tax income rise by about 5 percent, or nearly $2,200 annually. Those in the top 1 percent would face a $19,000 average tax increase—a 1.5 percent reduction in after-tax income.

McCain would lift after-tax incomes an average of about 3 percent, or $1,400 annually, for middle-income taxpayers by 2012. But, in sharp contrast to Obama, he would cut taxes for those in the top 1% by more than $125,000, raising their after-tax income an average 9.5 percent.

Even the Fox News Polls have consistently had Obama in front. HTH. Not sure what it is today.

And before you talk about "the Socialist Left" - perhaps you should look at the huge expansion of government (and thus, the amount of money spent) under President GW Bush. You can also look at all the liberties you know longer have, under the same Presidency. Patriot Act, warrantless wiretaps, warrantless laptop searches at the border ...

And also remember that it is McCain who is upholding the idea of bailing out mortgages for those who got in over their heads - if that isn't socialism, I don't know what is.

The "poll" numbers that MSNBC are reporting is a joke. I was just watching the news...McCain is ahead as of last night!!!

baja don't waste you time with the bigotry from this idiot.  He is just trying to get a response out of anyone, so he can have an excuse to answer back in his abusive manner...apparently that's what makes people llike him happy.  The hate mongers are desperate and will say anything in the last throes of their regime.  I've even seen people standing up for Bush and saying that he just wasn't prepared to deal with so much!!!  Huh???  Isn't that what a president signs on for???  I don't think he had a clue anymore than Sarah Palin, and lets hope that the bigots will go back to their doublewide meth labs and let Obama do the job that we, the people, have chosen for him...President of the United States!!!  Yea!!  Also fyi, women and men both choose to be victims or not.  I have known many men who were victims of themselves and their ever inflating egos.  George Bush falls into that category.  He still doesn't think he has done anything wrong or made any erroneous decisions. I believe that he is a classic narcissist,  and a victim  of bad upbringing. i.e. parents who never told him when he was being an egotistical idiot, and that no one, no matter what, is always right.  It's obvious!!!  The voters will tell him that he did, and HE victimized the republican party, or was that  Rape.....History will decide his fate and the way his presidency will be viewed by future generations.  Meanwhile, it's time to move on and heal our nation from these last 8 years of abject failure.  The days of King George are almost done, thank God, and I am starting to feel like there is good reason to be hopeful for the good old U.S.A.  I know I am not alone in feeling this way!!  Get out and vote!!  Don't fall for anymore bullcrap!  We've had enough.  Vote Obama/Biden, and watch our Country prosper once again!!!

Bajagirl, I think you need to look at who is ignoring the facts.  The fact is Obama has ZERO experience in any position and he is your candidate for president.  At least Palin has experience and the Alaskans think she did a great job; it's really hard to get a consistent 86% approval rating.  Those are the facts, try living with them yourself.

Greg, and McCain has experience...crashing jets and getting through a navy career as a legacy? Palin, it took her 5 colleges to finally get a degree.  To think that he or she compares with a Columbia and Harvard scholar, a grass-roots organizer who chose politics over multi-million dollar Wall Street job, who was one of the few people who recognized from the start the Iraq was a mistake, who spelled out an international policy that McCain ridiculed  and Bush finally embraced doesn't rise to the level of ridiculous. You may not like his policies, but I personally don't want another Bush moron in the WH.

Greg, here is an interesting and intelligent post from another comment line.

      ·         Posted By: Nins @ 11/02/2008 1:02:50 PM

Comment: To all of the conservatives out there who think that Obama is a flaming liberal, I would like to remind you of what he did when he was elected President of the Harvard Law Review. The Law Review President gets to name ten individuals to write articles for the Review, and these ten people get to control the content of the publication. All of the minorities and the liberals thought they finally had it made, that Obama would appoint ten left wing editors. Instead, Obama appointed three conservatives, three liberals and four moderates. That year the Law Review was critically acclaimed as the best run and best written Harvard publication in decades.

So when he wins in November, conservatives don't have to freak out. Obama is a centrist and will appoint a balanced cabinet full of active people who will really get things done. Kind of like the way our multi-cultural society is supposed to be. And exactly what we need in this time of economic crisis.

Shows wisdom, and understanding, don't you think?  It's part of his experience.  Lincoln had little or no national experience, but he had wisdom and understanding.

catamaran- You are right. He will govern as a centrist. He knows that if he doesn't, he'll be gone in four years. I think he'll be a great president, hopefully like Bill Clinton without the sleaze.

BTW-All polls show Obama ahead by anywhere from 3-8 points. Pollsters make their money by being accurate. The smallest lead is in the Investors Business Daily poll, which was supposedly spot on last election. There is no publication further to the right than IBD.

Robert, we women did not want "a" woman in the House, we want a woman who isn't a joke and supports women's rights!!  Palin's nomination was wrong from the start to the majority of women because McCain merely chose her to try and get American women to fall in line. Dumb mistake.  Her ideas would have set our daughters back 50 years! No thank you.  We've worked hard many years to get THIS far just to give it all back.

The GOP set the tone for her campaign when they started wearing t'shirts and buttons bragging about their "hot" candidate. Dumb move. She then lost any respect that is due a candidate and the jokes began. She was kept away from interviews which made everyone curious as to who Sarah Palin was, thus the real vetting began.  When she finally ventured out, people became aware of her qualifications and decided which way to go with the republican ticket.

No one rejected Hillary, this simply wasn't Hillary's time.  You know, a lot of women don't like Hillary either.  We don't vote by gender--we do have brains that we use. If it were meant to be, she WOULD HAVE HAD the majority and would have been the nominee. And Obama was within his rights to chose any person he felt would be right to be his running mate..that spot is not guaranteed to the runner up!

Please note that Palin has the support of a number of officials in NOW! They see what some of you "women" who have a single issue you call the "womans" issue and that would be abortion.

Sarah irks you because she had the courage to give birth to her little down's syndrome baby instead of throwing him in a trash can to gasp out his little life without the comfort of human love like the little late term babies born alive that Obama voted to leave alone to die an agonizing death gasping for air when he voted against the born alive act in the Illinois Senate.

The women of NOW who support Palin see that she hasn't just cracked the glass ceiling (thanks to Hillary for the big crack in that ceiling--appreciate her for what she has done for us) but Palin shattered it  for all of us to move forward through if we will only take the opportunity.

Why fight against her--because of abortion, I know!  It is only one of women's issues.  I am much more concerned about being treated as an equal by men, of equal pay for equal work.  Of respect whether we choose to burn our bras or wish to look beautiful like Governor Palin does.

She is a beautiful woman, a mom, a successful role model for our girls and if she chooses to wear mascara we should cheer for her right to be an individual and wear heels and mascara and pretty clothes!  Somehow women's rights has decended into women's right to look dowdy, have abortions and wallow in the muck.  Glad to see someone more like all the women I actually associate with be the one who leads us through the hole in the glass ceiling.

Shame on you! Women are not that cold hearted.  Most abortions could be prevented if women didn't get drunk or do drugs and get stupid.  There should be exceptions for health and for rape and incest, but otherwise, women should keep their legs together and a huge number of abortions could be done away with.  Too many want the freedom to be reckless without the natural consequences that come with that reckless behavior.

As I see it Sarah supports women's rights.  Our right to be equal to men in the political arena (power is everything for women and men).  Our right to look beautiful if we wish and not if we wish.  Our right to bear children that others think should be aborted and our right to bear arms and hunt moose or protect ourselves from rapists.

I was proud of Hillary and I'm equally proud of Sarah--the new generation who stands on the shoulders of the Hillary's of the world to gain even more for us women of all kinds, shapes and colors.

        Marie,

your post sells women way too short.  those who have rejected her have done so because she is not ready for this office.  She has essentially no foreign policy. No economic understanding other than 'it's all about job creation".   She was a Sunday night surprise and it showed.  To state that women reject her on her stance on abortion is disrespectful to women who have more on their minds than their womb.

ForTheBreakUp's view is not pessimistic but accurate.  Come on.  You just fail to see the truth.  Look at the mess NY is in with people leaving because they are way over taxed, cannot find affordable housing, and some can't even find decent paying jobs.  Now on top of it Democrat Gov is warning the feds and us that the state is on the brink of bankruptcy.  As for the great O's healthcare, you and he didn't mention the fact that the state of Hawaii tried something similar and abandoned it because the state almost went bankrupt!  As for Wall Street that all you dems refer to, IF indeed you weren't so concerned about freebees, you would realize that by bailing out Wall Street, the average white collar worker on Wall Street's job more than likely was saved.  What do you think would happen if Wall Street totally folded because of no assistance?

Oh yea, I'm SOOO voting for Obama because I want a handout. I admit it. I'm a lazy, shifty, no-good freeloader who just wants to suck off the government teat.

After all, I only work 50-60 hours a week and earn a nice six figure salary. I'd much rather move into a trailer so I can rake in that hefty $365 a month in welfare benefits. Top Ramen for everyone!

Fear can be a justified emotion when one is faced with a horrific threat.  That threat would be the unknown person named Obama who may soon be our leader.  This is the Obama we don't know because he is the great "unknowable."  He is the ONE who wants to be, as he said in his book, the blank screen upon which we can all project what we wish to see--sounds a little too much like the Wizard of Oz--big image--no substance or worse substance that can be feared greatly.

Why won't Obama reveal his vault birth certificate he claims is in Hawaii?  He's had it sealed if there even is such adocument since there is one in Mombasa, Kenya which would mean he isn't a citizen and, like Arnold S. cannot run for President.  Why won't he show his credentials or thesis from college?  We know he only got mediocre grades because, though he won't release his transcripts, he got less than a 3.5 from Columbia since he is not listed as having graduated with any honors--they start at 3.5 so how did he get into Harvard which has a minimum of 3.8?  We don't need an affirmative action president or was it Al Monsour who created him.  If you are still wondering if you should vote for this mystery man meet the man who created him by googling Obama Al Monsour and please do not vote for this man Obama who was created by someone on the pay of Saudi Arabia (let'see, where were the 9/11 pilots from).  Ask Obama why he was still travelling on an Indonesian passport when he visited Pakistan at age 20!  That meant he had had to renounce any American citizenship if he ever had any so he would be a natrualized not a natural born citizen as the constitution requires.

Then look at what he did this past year in Kenya boots on the ground supporting his Luo Cousin Odinga to turn that 85% Christian country over to the Islamist/Communist cousin Odinga who named his son after Fidel and who promised the Islamists to put the whole country under Sharia law within a year--all available documents on YouTube etc.

If in doubt exercise fear and caution and vote for McCain.  If a man won't show his documents to put questions to rest he must have something to hide.  If Obama has a lot to hide, that makes me very nervous (and should you) about having him for president.  Does he have the same fate in mind for us as he did for Kenya when he went from village to village campaigning for "Change" (yup that was their slogan there too) and hoped to bring about change to an Islamist/Communist country.  Yes, I am afraid of Obama and with good reason.  Please google Obama OdingaKenya to learn about the similarities of Odinga's campaign and Obama's then be justifiably frightened.

I am terrified enough that I am looking at moving to a foreign country where there is still freedom form Socialism and where the business aren't taxed higher than they already are here--the highest in the world at present!!

Marie Thomson---it's a shame, but NONE of these libs on this page will BELIEVE any of that information. If McCain had HALF of the associations that Obama has/had, it would have been out there for everyone to look at. I think the issue with his college records may show 3 things. His grades at Columbia, how did he get into HARVARD?? WHO PAID?? and possibly a place of birth on there.

And I'd like to add---good luck with that health care for everyone. He keeps talking about 45 million people uninsured, he includes illegal aliens in that total. YOU WILL NEVER see health care people. GOOD LUCK! It just will not happen. Hillary tried that during Bill's presidency and it went NOWHERE!! I've been in health care for 18 yrs. and this country WILL NOT go socialistic with our health care. OUR DOCTORS will not stand for it. That's why a lot of them left Canada!

And HOPE??? Hope for what?? That he'll cross the isle and work with the Republicans?? He has NO RECORD of crossing the isle to get things done. THAT WILL never happen either. He will not appoint anyone in his administration from the Republican side. But McCain would have. He at least has a record you can look at. This man has NO executive experience AT ALL. Community organizer(terrorist)for Acorn. Good luck America the next 4 yrs.

Fear tactic is at its best. I, however, think polls are way too wrong this time and McCain will win. People who say they are undecided would not actually say that they would vote for McCain as somebody would ask them what was great about last 8 years. If Bush can win twice, then I fear McCain will win too.

              Let's talk about education.

McCain graduated 894 out of a class of 899 at the Naval Academy.  McCain did not qualify for West Point.

Compare McCain to Obama's education, and remember this:  Obama put himself though college and finally paid off his student loans from his book sale money just last year.

              Obama:

Barack Obama attended Occidental College, but received his undergraduate degree in political science from Columbia University, an Ivy League member currently ranked 9th in the country by U.S. News and World Report. Obama also graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Harvard Law School, where he also served as President of the Harvard Law Review. Harvard Law School is ranked the best Law School in America.

Columbia University - B.A. political science with a specialization in international relations.

Harvard - Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude

Biden is an idiot?  Your fine with Sarah "Phailin" as president?  Who's the real idiot?

McCain has bad experience and uses it badly.  Twentysix years in the senate and he's still making the same stupid mistakes.  I'll take Obamas experience as a community organizer, a constitutional scholar and an aggressive member of the US House.

Jesus was a community organizer, Pontius Pilot was a governor - who was the better leader?  Martin Luther King was community organizer, Lester Maddox was a governor - who was the better leader?  I'm not making a comparison here, other than experince doesn't matter, it's what you learn from it and how you apply it.  McCain has learned little and applies less.

              McCain is McSame.

The Patriot Act has eroded our constituional rights.  Obama want to restore our right to privacy, our right to face our accusors, our right to a fair trail.  All stripped away by the Patriot Act.  Under the Patriot Act, if the president, on any information at all, declares you an enemy, your off to prison with no access to an attorney, not right to trial, no access to information regarding your case.

The Rethug, are good at  naming things the opposite of what they really are.  The Patriot Act, No Child Left Behing, DOMA.

The evangelical right would rather loose their own homes, send their sons to die in a war for Oil, and abolish the Bill of Rights, rather than let everybody enjoy the same freedoms they wish for themselves.

And all they offer are hate, ignorance and fear.

What experience does Obama have to lead this country

I've got some news for you. Apart from when an incumbent President going for a second term, no prospective candidate ever has experience to lead the country before they get there. The question of testing prior experience doing something else is rather similar to testing the experience of a neural surgeon and asking him/her to build a craft to take an astronaut to the moon. Doesn't work like that.

As far leading the military, perhaps McCain II had experience of leading the military. I believe he led military operations in Nam. Wasn't very successful based on historical evidence. Perhaps McCain III only ever managed to get in the military because of big daddy. But his record is questionable to say the least. Short of frequently crashing his plane (and running away rather than staying behind to save colleagues, etc). He had plenty of experience with that one. Some experience, I'd say.

Actually none of the facts you just said here are accurate. Perhaps hsi "Big Daddy" was a bit upset when McCain had a chance to leave the Hanoi Hilton and he chose to say until his men got out to.  That, Raat ki Raani is a leader. That is a President and that is what scares the hell out of democrats.

See this, from Joe Biden's OWN WORDS:

The single, most important legislative accomplishment in my 32-year-old career in the Senate is passing the Violence Against Women Act. After years of work, countless hours of hearings, pages of expert testimony and Senate floor debate, my Act passed in 1994. The law was renewed in 2000 and most recently expanded in 2005 when I worked to include new measures to treat children who witness violence, to increase housing opportunities and to create dedicated resources for rape crisis centers.

Flash,  I'll go with the words of Ben Fanklin.  "He who would give up the least of his freedoms for protection, deserves neither".

As far as better protection, if we had a president capable of  reading beyond the 3rd grade level that would help too.  I seem to remember a briefing paper titled "Bin Laden determined to strike in the US".  It outline possible plans to hijack planes and crash them into buildings.  Bush didn't read it, thought the title too vague.

And yes, I do resent the airlines screening my bags.

I would rather have them screen my bags and every other passengers too!  We live in difficult times and sometimes, our enemies don't always play by our rules, so please keep screening my bags at the airports and every other passengers.

Ben Franklin is my hero, but he didn't live in our world and our times.  He knew nothing of nukes that could end civilization and of terrorists in our midst that we have let in.  Thanks to Lyndon Johnson and his "everyone is equally cool" doctrine that kept us from putting quotas on "undesirables" we now have tons of enemies within our own borders hiding behind headscarfs, burques and Politically Correct  doctrines of our own country that shackle our ability to speak the truth.

Now we must balance freedom with security and it is a fine line.  Our enemies have been masters at using our own freedoms to end our own and an Obama victory may well seal our fate if he really does end our anti-missile program and cut our military spending in half.

u dumb ass slut i do work and have been working all my life for one company.I have worked hard and smart all my life but still no advancement.School should not be a deciding factor in any job any one gets.I have 2 science degrees and never used anything i learned in school.Another thing for every one of those immigrants stories i can give you 100 the other way.All Elitists think they work hard or smart, but in reality they have never worked a day in there life. Why are you so scared of socialism? You wnat equality for everyone that is the only way to get it.The thing most important to alot of you dummies is schooling which i might add the most useless skill in the world, except for game shows.Every company you go in you still have to be trained to do it there way.Marie you being a women probably get preferential treatment in school, and a work place which means you were less qualified to earn your position.

I know socialism will take away all your advantages, along with the eltists.Hell any one could get a decent job if things were handed to them based on gender, race or religion.

                    Hail socialism,and down with capitalism

Capitalism rewards the lazy or as marie says the ones who work smarter.alot of people dont have a chance to work smarter companies want you to do it there way or the highway.I hope for your sake and any one who is in it that the stock market crashes and you guys are left with nothing then lets see who has there hands out for a hand out.

minmn - Obama has never been an agressive member of the US House.  He has never seved in the House.  He is a Senator and certainly not agressive.  If you are agressive you go after something.  He likes to dodge the votes, lest he offend someone when he decides to further his political career.

Robert J. - there was an independent study done on the campaign.  All networks were guilty of showing more negative stories toward McCain than Obama and MSNBC was the worst, with about 74% (McCain) to 14% (Obama).   The only one that was "fair and balanced" was FOX, with exactly the same (40% each).  You only have to have half a brain  to know the media was in the tank for Obama from day one.  Otherwise Hillary would have been the nominee.  Don't you think it interesting that the Obama campaign kicked three news outlets off its plane and they just happened to be from 3 newspapers that endorsed McCain?

Do you have military experience.  The veterans that I know support the Bush administration and the decisions of their commander in chief.  Maybe if Clinton had of responded to the first attack on the twin towers, the second one wouldn't have happened.  The commander in chief needs military experience.  How can you be in charge of something that you know nothing about?  Obama is scary for our military.  My father, spouse, and several in laws are retired military and my children are active duty.  For their protection and guidance, I vote McCain.

Rich people never earned a penny of there money. Its the people who slave for them that has made them money. Most business ownere, ceo's and investors are the lazy ones who are waiting for a handout.I dont have a problem with my tax money going to help people who dont want to work at the putrid wage offered by most companies. Also most of those bad wages, means they will not pay for your insurence,at least on welfare they do.Every one who makes under 200,000 dollars is grossly underpaid.

I am all for socialism,i believe in equality for all,not just for the select few.You will probably say where is the incentive to work, but let me ask you this where is the incentive to work hard for any company when only a few get selected for those high paying jobs.South America has rejected capitalism now i wish north America would follow suit.socialism has failed in some places, but capitalism has failed in every corner of the world. What this country needs to do is to have the population vote on every law that is what is a true democracy, and we would be socialist then.

the record amount of new registered voters is made up of people who never had a job (like college) students and people that don't want to work (like most welfare recipients).  The rest our them made 'American Idol' the highest rated TV show famous....lololol....that's all this is about, in six months, most will not even know who the 'president' is...this is just another AI contest...lololol......

                                  Joe,

Wealthy people in America  often work to get that way.  Sometimes they just roll up their shirsleeves and work or other times they work smarter if not harder.  Quityourwhinin' and get to work!  I have worked with Asian refugees from the Vietnam era.  They came a couple of decades ago from camps all over Southeast Asia--mostly in Thailand.  A lot of them are succeeding beyond most American's wildest dreams.  Their kids get scholarships to the University of Washington (and lots of other schools).  They won't even let them qualify as "minorities" even though there are a lot less of them than blacks.  Why, because they even outdo caucasian kids from the suburbs.

One family came without education because they were in Pol Pot's re-education camps where no schoolswereheld.  They came with two small half starved children and a small suitcase.  They now live up the hill from me in a beautiful home and drive a newer Mercedes.  Their now three children are all college educated and  good citizens.

The parents worked two jobs.  The kids got jobs as soon as old enough and put all the money into the family pot--not into video games or the other kind of pot.  Joe and others who want socialism so they don't have to work--just get off your duffs.  You already posess a knowledge of English and a basic education!  If refugees from Southeast Asia say this is the land of opportunity (I could give you twenty or more stories just like the one above--one girl I knew at 16 now 20 owns a large Chinese Restaurant and several apartment buildings--started without a cent)!!!

I for one, it looks like, hope that if Obama wins he is intelligent enough to go back on his economic campaign promises and do the opposite his supporters are voting him for and not crush the growth by taxing, not crush the few energy resources we have going and not spend while we're broke to the extent he is saying. I have faith he'll do the right things once he has the facts. If he follows his campaign promises on economic disaster, like his supporters want, we'll be in for a very tough recession.

                                    McCain/Palin now

i am, as i'm sure many others are, TIRED of this campaign. it has completely worn me out emotionally. i have learned things about my family and co-workers that i never wanted to know, and have realized that my fellow americans are not as kind hearted as i had previously believed.  with that said, i truly believe that either candidate would do the best job they possibly could if elected, both are good men, one is a little bit too old, the other a little wet behind the ears. i personally do not mind paying a little more in taxes if that means someone less fortunate than me has an opportunity they would not have had otherwise, and i truly believe that is the backbone of this great country that i call home.  my final conclusion in this disaster of an election is that i must vote for the candidate that i believe in my heart can bring this divided country together again, and show the world that we ARE in fact the UNITED states of america...Obama brings me this hope, and if it is in fact all a lie, at least i have that HOPE to hold on to, that my children will grow up in a nation where neighbors respect each others differences, and the rich HELP the less fortunate.. i am voting for change- change in attitude, heartfelt change, including proving to the racist fear-mongers that now include some of my closest ex-friends that we are all american, from immigrant to african, to asian, to good ol boy in the delta.. obama 2008..i believe...

Acorn was investigated in Nevada and a democratic Secretary of State did it.   They submitted names falsely and admitted it was a employee trying to make more money, so he submitted false names, like Donald Duck etc.  It's still voter fraud.  I wonder how many other times this has happened and where were the fraud preventions that should have been in place?

                                            Shellie--

Yes Fraudulent votes registered by ACORN!  This past year here in Washington state ACORN was convicted (7 employees) in the biggest voter fraud case in the history of the state.  Yup!  That is what ACORN does--register dead people, people from the phone book and names who are just made up by ACORN employees who are just smokin' pot.

There are FBI investigations in many other states--raids of ACORN headquarters in Nevada.  Obama was chief legal counsel for this group and affiliated with them when he was a "community organizer" in Chicago.  The fraudulent regtistrations of Obama's ACORN minions for Obama could taint the outcome of these elections--

Vote for McCain!  He does not encourage the dead to rise and vote (the miracle Obama's ACORN followers foster) nor convicts nor non-citizens etc.

ACORN erodes the legal vote of every American.  When our voting system is corrupted our rights are eroded irreparably and our constitution shredded!

Hey Ryan- after reading some of your "off-the-wall" comments. It's clear to me that you still don't know what you are talking about. Calling people "radical liberals" is no way were going to end the partisan politics that was started by Carl Rove and his hate mongering conservatives. Also, don't blame the media for the previous presidents troubles, that won't cut it either. I've also noticed you like to blame others, which is exactly what McCain is doing other than discuss the issues. I'm sure he learned it from Bush. But when it's all said and done, Barack Obama will be our next president and I'm sure the Republicans will be feeling a little "blue" tomorrow night.

Illegal voter registration is different from voter fraud.  You can register all the dead people and Mickey Mouses you want, but their vote doesn't count because they can't vote.  How is a dead person or Mickey Mouse going to walk in and cast a vote?  So, your ACORN arguement doesn't hold water.  Voter SUPPRESSION, however, is a different story.  keeping real people who are eligible to vote from voting does affect the outcome.  That is why the repubs use it, it works.

Marie -- maybe if you had read some other seeds in the past, my sarcasm would have made sense to you...  The accusation was that a non-profit ORGANIZATION has ALREADY VOTED...  As other seeds have pointed out, REGISTRATION fraud is quite different than VOTER fraud...  An alive, upright and mobile PERSON going to the polls STILL has to show proper identification in order to be able to VOTE...  I've never heard of a whole organization being able to vote en masse...  What's more, ACORN and every other organization that is registering voters HAS to report ALL registrations REGARDLESS of the name...  It is usually their own internal audits that catch the Donald Ducks and Porky Pigs -- but they STILL have to turn the registrations in...  And, again -- I'd really like to see Donald Duck come with a valid I.D. to the polls tomorrow...  I wonder if he's as cute in person as he is on TV???

Had enough, what comments are you referring to?  The one in which I called Shellie a radical?  Radicals call people stupid when they don't agree with them.

If you are referring to the comment on the media tearing down Obama at some point, it was a question I asked, I wanted to know what people thought about it.  No partisanship was in that initial question.  The past two presidents have been beat up bad in the press.  If Obama gets elected, will he get beat up as well, and it has nothing to do with the media being liberal.  It is a question.  I think you read to far into it.  If Obama was elected, I wanted to ask about what was different in the media, towards the president?  My thought is it will be the same, just the bantering will be at Obama, instead of Bush, and my point has nothing to do with political affiliation.

If you think Rove is the problem, he is just the contrast to the likes of Pelosi and Reid, making everything a political spectacle.

Don't paint the town blue just yet, we might just have enough red paint to cover.

To all of you that don't think ACORN's fraudulent voter registrations are an issue, the fact that ACORN accepts huge amounts of money from our government is an issue.  They should have to pay back every penny they have received.  Once they come out in support for one person running for a political office they are no longer non-partisan and they do not qualify for any government funding.  They are an illegal organization.  I'd suggest that you check out the law but it evident the law doesn't matter to most of you.

They are, in fact, supposed to be non partisan.  They cannot legally take money from us and use it to promote one candidate.  Hlliburton's contracts are an entirely different issue and do have any comparison to ACORN.

Well guess what the recovery rate is on health care bills?????Want to know?  No you don't cause you might have to recognize that the current state of our economy, government and society is in dire need of change.  We already have subsidized health care.  Hospitals receive federal dollars for Medicare, eat the non payers and make up the difference on the paying insured.   The banking industry is now government subsidized and the rest of the economy is tanking.  Education is deplorable unless you can afford private school.  No wonder so many people are embracing change. The theivery of the last 8 years have given the middle class very little else to believe in.

I found the Garrison Kiellor column this weekend very interesting. His repub friends are saying aloud that they're voting for McCain but will be voting for Obama. They worked hard for their education and don't like Obama being vilified because he's educated. Sounds like even the right wingers are tired of having idiots in the White House.

During the Vietnam war Senator McCain gave information on flight patterns and targets in North Vietnam to the enemy. This information was given in exchange so that he could go to the hospital after his capture. During the time he was a POW he collaborated with the enemy. He is not a war hero. Information given to the enemy may have caused the deaths of US airmen during the Vietnam war.

Some may wonder why McCain went to such extraordinary lengths to conceal his POW record, and the following video interview gives tremendous merit as to why he did. If his POW records were made public he wouldn't be able to make himself out to be the hero he claims to be. Of the nearly 700 POW's who returned from Vietnam, why haven't we seen a stage full of them supporting McCain? Perhaps this is why. Paste the urls below into a browser and watch the videos.

Welfare under Obama will be pretty lean when you add in the cost of government growth, unemployment checks and 'new energy research'. Throw in lots of pork barrel spending and heaping helpings of corruption and campaign favor paybacks and we'll still well in the red. This will be business as usual for Washington. Suckered in once again. Party time. Let'em eat cake, the dumbasses. Belly up to the bar boys, drinks on the taxpayer. They'll never learn.

John McCain is not the man he once was, hell he pushed what y'all call 'Socialism" not but 4 years ago and didn't have a problem with Rove v Wade.  The pick of Palin was a pander to the extreme right, a direction I no longer wish to go in.

I'm casting my vote for Obama/Biden and not really expecting a damn thing in return with maybe the exception of a government that pays attention to the constitution and a leader that has some intelligence as compared to the last 8 years.

The republican party has given us fear and hate as reasons to vote against Obama, and given us no reason to vote for McCain.  By definition, the republican party has become a terrorist organization.

We support Senator Obama, in the hope of bringing our troops home and helping the middle class to achieve the American dream, isn't that what America is all about?, equality and the upliftment of its citizens. And by the way a lot of comments seem to say that only minorities are on welfare, where I live in Florida that is the opposite, so please stop stereotyping.  All of my friends and relatives voting for Obama  do not receive social services, and work very hard to provide for our families. It very funny but frightening to see the desperation of the RNC. WE THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA HAVE SPOKEN, WE WANT CHANGE, AND WE WILL/HAVE VOTE/D FOR CHANGE.

And someone who will protect the constitution, not destroy it. And someone who will lead from a position of hope, not fear. That pretty much leaves out McCain on all counts. I'm a small business owner who has done very well this year and I'm still working 2 jobs. My wife has MS and the medical bills have already driven us into bankruptcy once. So your assertion that only welfare deadbeats are voting for Obama is just asinine.

After trying "Beer Buddy Bush" for 8 years, I think we've proven beyond any reasonable doubt that you can't get by in the White House with a sweet 'tator mentality. It'll be very refreshing for once to have a REAL educated president.

After Bush's assault on the Constitution, it will be nice to have a president in office who actually obeys his oath of office and, not only protects the Constitution, but UNDERSTANDS it, as well.

A group of radical terrorists hijack a few planes and run them into skyscrapers in your large cities. That sounds like the drivel from the repug posters I've been hearing for the last several months.

Now, what would I do? I would have invaded Afghanistan, exactly as Bush did. But I wouldn't have left the fight (where we knew Bin Laden was hiding) and go invade another country. We wasted valuable resources in Iraq when we should have concentrated our efforts where we KNEW the enemy was hiding. The fight against terrorism will last for years and years and will cost us many many billions over. Let's not waste it on wild goose chases.

If you are having kids you either cant afford or you are not married then I would guess Hussein.  Lets see if your a teacher or professor who probably couldn't make it in the real world I would guess Hussein. If you do drugs or a child molester I would guess Hussein. If you have a disdain for Christian's I would guess Hussein. If you are an atheist or love the ACLU, PETA, GAY GROUPS, NOW, NAACP, ACORN, I would guess Hussein.  Last but not least if you are addicted to borrowing money and are deep in debt I would guess Hussein.

Gallup and some other pollsters do show certain demographics and one of the things they show is that Obama's support is largest among people who have no Christian values. His support is primarily from minorities who make less than $50,000 a year and who have no church affiliation or if they do, do not attend.

Take it somewhere else Sam, maybe somewhere like the middle east where they appreciate the intolerance of other's folks religion or lack thereof.  We don't see it that way here in the United States of America.

They have to tell a story of how wonderful things will be if they are elected, then get in and develope new plans of their own. They all do it. I learned that what ever they tell you is close to the opposite of what they will really do. I'm voting McCain. Obama doesn't even HAVE a history except for all the bad he's done.

They show the percentages among various demograpics but not the percentages of respondents in each category. Telephone poilling no longer reaches a wide segment of society as it did before the days of Called ID, answering machines and Cell phones when people actually answered their phones. The only way a poll can be reliable is if it actually reflects society. When was the last time you answered your phone when you didn't know the caller?

The democratic congress has managed to actually do much worse than the Republicans and I didn't think that was possible.
