MADRID — A son of Osama bin Laden who grabbed headlines by marrying a British woman last year has flown to Spain and requested asylum, the Spanish government said Tuesday.

Omar Osama bin Laden, 27, is a metals trader who had been living in Cairo, Egypt with his wife. He has not renounced his father, but has said he wants to be an "ambassador for peace" between the Muslim world and the West.

His wife said, however, that he was denied a British residency request this year after officials there said he had demonstrated continuing loyalty to his father.

Omar Osama bin Laden — one of the al-Qaida leader's 19 children — arrived in Madrid Monday on a flight from Cairo to Casablanca, Morocco, an Interior Ministry official said.

He had been traveling on a Saudi passport, and remained at the airport Tuesday while the ministry considered his request for Spanish asylum, the official said on condition of anonymity in line with ministry policy.

The official did not know on what grounds asylum was being sought. The ministry has 72 hours to make a decision, and the petitioner has a right of appeal.

Omar Osama bin Laden caused a tabloid storm last year after marrying Jane Felix-Browne, 52,who has since taken the name Zaina Alsabah. The couple later said they were planning a 3,000-mile horse race across North Africa next year to draw attention to the cause of peace, but the plan was downgraded to a desert horse race within Egypt in light of the difficulties of obtaining permission to cross borders in North Africa.

Alsabah said in May in Cairo that Omar Osama bin Laden had been denied a British residency request. She showed The Associated Press a statement from the couple's legal firm quoting a British consular officer as saying his residency in Britain would cause public concern and would not be "conducive to the public good."

The British official is cited in the letter as saying that "statements made during recent media interviews indicate evidence of continuing loyalty to your father, who is ultimately held responsible for the London bombing" on July 7, 2005, that killed 52 people on three subway lines and a bus.

Omar Osama bin Laden had declined to directly condemn his father or the Sept. 11 attacks in media interviews, instead condemning all violent acts and saying simply that he had a different approach to problems than his father.

Osama bin Laden is believed to be hiding in the Pakistan-Afghan border region.

Omar Osama bin Laden had moved to Afghanistan with his father in 1996 after living with him in Sudan, and trained at an al-Qaida camp. But Omar has said he hasn't seen his father since he left Afghanistan in 2000 and returned to his homeland of Saudi Arabia.

He has refrained from publicly criticizing his father, saying Osama bin Laden is just trying to defend the Islamic world.

Interesting...I knew bin Laden had at least one son, it's an interesting development that he's chosen to split with his father to seek asylum among the 'allies of the infidel.'

Sorry I'm still chuckling over this one, but Yes he does have an uncanny resemblance to the Zappster!

As a woman, I see this man that is just beaten down by a world of hate and intolerance... and if he has chosen to fight for Peace and Communication with the Western world, as intelligent humans we must be open to the idea.

Otherwise we are not Open for Healing our Nation and ultimately the world. I for one would listen to what he has to offer to the table.

It's absolutely insane to hold any of bin Laden's seemingly myriad siblings and relatives under suspicion solely because of their bloodlines.

Good for him!

We should embrace his quest for peace.

Even if my father was a murderer, I would not renounce him, I would have no choice but to continue to love him.

But I would fight for justice and peace in my own life.

I am pointing out, without making it obvious, that a McCain Presidency would have set a pre-condition for this man to renounce his father before they would even think of speaking to him concerning his father.

I am Jeremiah Johnson and sometimes I am waaayyy too cryptic

And that is what is wrong with this talking process!,

Make pre-conditions of:  what kind of refreshments maybe or where meeting is to be held and perhaps whom should attend...

But to put conditions on someone that wants to discuss PEACE? I think thats a discussion I could walk in on without any pre-conditions.

Peace isn't a four letter word.

It was foolish to try and inject American Politics into this discussion about a man from the Middle East seeking asylum in Spain.

Just what are you going to do with your time after the election is over?  Will you have anything of value to say?

Spikgary,

I've a few friends in Spain and if you want to talk about this guy's chances of getting support for his Asylum in a nation that is more prejudiced against Muslims than USA ...

go for it.

I have FAMILY in Galicia, Madrid, Barcelona, Teruel, Murcia, Castellon de la Plana, Toledo and Alicante... go ahead and talk about HOW MUCH spaniards hate muslims since we have a huge influx of them in Spain, along with asians... please don't make blanket generalized statements, especially since you have most likely never lived there and I can bet didn't know anyone in the Madrid bombings.

did you understand my comment?

    Lo2013

I guess not, but please explain it to me because it sounded like you're speaking for all spaniards and implying that they are all prejudiced against muslims moreso than the US (based on a "few friends")

If that wasn't what you were saying, by all means clarify. If you were being sarcastic... you really need to try harder to make it obvious.

Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Conference on Intolerance and Discrimination against Muslims.

"Racism and discrimination impoverish and violate our democratic rights, be they against Muslims or against those that hold different beliefs," the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, said at the meeting, held in the Spanish city of Corboba.

He said intolerance and discrimination against Muslims had long been a concern for the Organization. "It is logical that we avoid the risk of a new racism appearing that will disrupt social relations and damage human rights and our very security."

Human rights organizations and international monitoring bodies have repeatedly expressed concern about police misconduct against people of foreign origin in Spain. 611

In a report released in 2002, Amnesty International claimed that torture and ill-treatment of ethnic minority members and foreigners are frequent and widespread. According to the organization, problems are aggravated by the fact that discriminatory treatment, such as identity controls based on racial profiling, is tolerated by the authorities.612

In the post-September 11 period, as efforts to counter terrorism have been stepped up, Muslims and Arabs have reportedly been increasingly affected by police harassment.613

The situation appears to have worsened after the March 2004 bombings in Madrid, with rights groups receiving an increasing number of complaints from people of Moroccan and Algerian origin about racist treatment and abusive arrests and identity checks by law enforcement authorities.614

I won't go on. I have several friends in Spain, Catalon and Basque and they all tell to me they wish Muslims would go somewhere else.

I won't bother you with the other verbs and adverbs and nouns of theirs that pepper their opinions.

You're showing me things from post 9/11 to 2005, of COURSE people were mad right after 9/11 and the Madrid bombings in 2004!!! Show me something from this year and we'll talk. And your basque friends wish EVERYONE would go somewhere else, they don't even identify as Spaniards and Cataluna in general has a nasty habit of being separatist.

Now, I have 2 friends injured in the Madrid bombings in Atocha station and family spread throughout the country and are they thrilled about muslims? Eh, I don't think they care one way or another, Spain has had many immigrants come into the country in large numbers from various cultures and religions... but most spaniards understand the difference between muslims and terrorists... I wish our country could understand the distinction as well.

I guess we are done then, Lo2013. No amount of proof I supply will persuade you that if Hatred, Bigotry, Racism existed ten years ago or even three years ago, it is still there but hidden.

If anything we have learned here from watching videos of McPalin Racist Rallies, it's that White Racist Bigots are alive and well and still carry Monkey Dolls with the names of Black Politicians running for President and when caught on tape, slowly slink out of sight.

It is the same for Racist Bigots as it is for cockroaches ... for everyone you see, there are a hundred hiding in the walls.

I am Jeremiah Johnson wishing you and yours a good night.

Wasn't Osama educated abroad, prior to his terrorist rein, and has he since been banished from Saudi Arabia, by his father and family or have I been reading a republican journal of clift notes from Dick Cheneys book how to create a country in the desert by the sea and generate an everlasting income as a politician using fear factor techniques.

I would like to know how he plans to bring peace between Muslim world and the west. Someone should interview him further on how he plans to do this. Not everyone who is Muslim is against the west. There are fanatics in Judaism and Christianity who have killed people in the name of their religions as well. Does he want to redeem his fathers actions by coming up with some solutions to peace??? Because his father is a nut, does it make him a nut too? My guess is there are some father/son issues and I do not believe his father spend any time with this kid because if so he would be a fanatic and would be fighting along side his father... Interview him

I just couldn't even begin to understand how this young man was raised... and to be standing up to the world and wanting Peace.

This is not any different than getting emancipated from your parent... okay this is a touchy subject with Americans because it involves Osama, but it is still a step forward. We don't chose our parents.

Maybe he is legit, but unless he denounced his father I can not see any country allowing him assylum.

He has been an adult for many years and as an adult trained as a terrorist. Muslim folks do not go against their parents easily.  Remember, he married a 52 year old British woman. This is not a young man. For a Muslim man to denounce his father is unheard of over there. It is just not done! Actually, I am surprised he married a British woman. It is customary for the sisters and mother to choose the wife. Why has this family strayed so far from Muslim tradition? Or, did they? This is what Osama bin Laden is fighting for.

I think we would do well to leave this alone. We just can not chance it. If he does not denounced his father. He can not have asylum. That's just what we need; an al-Qaida terrorist getting asylum here, in Spain or in any other country. But it would be the bleeding heart liberals in this country to cry out for him to get asylum for all the reasons I read above. Maybe that is what they are hoping for.

Good lord, y'all don'e even trust American citizens who have been tried, convicted, done their time and now trying to make a new life for themselves but you would trust an al-Qaida terrorist that won't even denounce his father?
