— The election of
Barack Obama as the first black president of the United States overwhelmed many African-American voters, especially older ones who still vividly recall the dark days of Jim Crow.

Obama won 95 percent support from black voters nationwide, according to msnbc.com’s analysis of exit polling data. One of them was Ellora Lyons, 81, of Peoria, Ill.

Lyons recounted boarding a train to Oklahoma with her two oldest boys in 1948. Her brother had been killed in an accident, and they were going to his funeral.

“There was a sign on this train that said, 'n-----s to the back,’” she said. “And we couldn’t drink out of the same water fountain.”

“I remember my mom and my dad talking about black folks being not able to vote,” Lyons said. “I never thought that I would see a black man [in the White House], but I was hoping that one day that a black man would run for president.”

Leon Modeste of Community Outreach Ministry in Albany, Ga., said, “Never in my wildest dream did I think that an African-American would even be considered, let alone get this close to the presidency.

“I figured maybe my grandchildren or something,” would live to see it, but not him, Modeste said.

McCain honors ‘special pride’
The historic nature of Obama’s victory was hailed even by his opponent, Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

“This is an historic election,” McCain told supporters in Phoenix. “I recognize the special significance it has for African-Americans and for the special pride that must be theirs tonight.

“We both recognize that though we have come a long way from the old injustices that once stained our nation’s reputation and denied some Americans the full blessings of American citizenship, the memory of them still have the power to wound,” McCain said.

“Let there be no reason for any American to fail to cherish their citizenship in this, the greatest nation on Earth,” he said.

For Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., a living legend of the civil rights movement of the 1960s, the election of the son of a Kenyan father was an occasion for tears.

“I never imagined, I never even had any idea I would live to see an African-American president of the United States,” Lewis said in an interview on MSNBC.

“We have witnessed tonight in America a revolution of values, a revolution of ideals,” Lewis said. “There’s been a transformation of America, and it will have unbelievable influence on the world.”

‘Ultimate victory of the civil rights movement’
Obama never made race a central tenet of his campaign. In that sense, said Russell Adams, an emeritus professor of ethnic studies at Howard University in Washington, he built upon, but ultimately moved past, the grievance-based “moral suasion” arguments of an earlier civil rights era.

“This is the ultimate victory of the civil rights movement,” said Adams, who was chairman of Howard’s Department of Afro-American Studies for nearly 35 years. “This is the triumph of content and character over race.”

On a personal level, he said, “I'm old enough to remember when my grandfather was told he’d lose his farm if he kept talking about trying to vote. Obama is a culmination of the notion that we should not be punished for what God did, for how He made us.”

Pauline Veasy, 65, of Milwaukee, put it more simply.

“I’m just so happy!” she said at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society, where dozens of black Milwaukee voters gathered to watch returns Tuesday night.

“An African-American? It’s just really, really great!”

Tonight is the time for the healing of Rev. Wright and so many others who saw the horrors of their time. Some things in life are hard to get beyond. Now is the time to let Rev. Wright get beyond those memories that you wouldn't acknowledge.

Tonight we should all say God Bless America.

It's not about getting over Rev. Wright words. It's is about Obama claiming he has never heard them. How did America fall for this. God Bless America!

It is my understanding that the guy is at least 50% white heritage. Why don't we celebrate the white side?? Are we only concerned about the black side?? What if he ran against a guy that was 100% black, would he be the white guy?? I voted for Brobama because I thought he was the right guy. Why does the media always center on things that are completely irrelevant just to work people up?? There is one good thing, hopefully now black people will have a role model so that they can learn how to ACT!! JEESH!

My friend is an African American. She was born in Africa and got American Citizenship. So she is a true African American. It gets her mad because people automatically think that she is black but she is white. She is profiled by the so called African Americans in this country. I really get upset that our forefathers brought Africans over here for slavery. They have been nothing but trouble since then. I wish we could help them out by sending them back.

If your not actually born in another country and then became an American, then your just an American. DROP THE AFRICAN.

While it may be a historic event for a race, I fear that many Americans voted for Obama because of his race. People wanted to see a historic event so they voted for someone based solely on the color of his skin. That is the biggest crock I have ever heard. I voted for McCain. Not because he is white, but because of his beliefs on the issues surrounding our country today. This is not the 60's and it is not the first year that blacks could vote. But all the television stations showed black populations after black populations as if it was so. If the reason they have chosen not to vote in the past is because there was not a black candidate, that is a complete waste. That shows how ignorant we are as a country. The same as women voting for Hilary Clinton based solely on her gender. It is an insult and a complete waste. May I remind you of Barack Obama's white half? Yes, that's right, he is bi-racial. Not just black.

Be ready for some rough years. Pulling our troops out immediately will cause havoc in Iraq. Be prepared for a war on the homefront. Be prepared for you income taxes to double, for capital gains to increase, to no longer be able to afford retirement or to will your children and relatives any property or belongings because the taxes will be too high. Enjoy yourself and the repercussions of the "change" that you have made.

This is a sad day for America, when they have elected a man that isn't even American.  He is shrouded in lies & hatred for this country.  First Lady Michael, hates it even more.  As they used to go on dates just to burn our flag.  Obama said that his first act would be to change the flag & the national anthem.  Then withdraw the troops.  I am so sorry.  All kinds of fighting will begin to happen in Israel, now.  Folks, I truely do believe God has had to turn his back on us, for all of America's sin.  You are seeing history.....it's called "the end times!!!

Pat- first thank you for voting for change. Unfortunately as I read your comment I feel some racism and bitterness. The fact that you you say NOW maybe they have a role model to act right says that you acknowledge not all black people are as dumb as your ancestors lied and made you believe they were. The other thing that concerns me about your comment is the whole percentage crap. It was your ancestors who put the percentage in place by saying one drop of African blood makes you African American....Barak has just that...so according to YOUR ancestors, YOUR fomer Presidents and republicans Barak Obama IS IN FACT AFRICAN AMERICAN. As for other well mannered and educated african americans that seem to think don't exist, well maybe I'll let you do your own research on that one....by the way do you eat peanut butter?

It will be interesting to see if the blacks decide to obey the laws now.  It will be interesting to see if less than the present 70% of their kids are born to unwed mothers.  It will be interesting to see if they start taking responsibility for their actions and their talk.  It will be interesting to see if they stop blaming every problem they cause on others.

As for 'finally having a role model', they've had some great role models of the years but turned their backs on them because they gained their success by rising above their skin color, as MLK said, and not by attacking America but by taking advantage of the opportunities it presented.

Yes, there was a time that blacks were slaves, most sold into slavery by other blacks in Africa, but there isn't a black in America today who was a slave nor a white who owned a slave.  It's time for the victimization of blacks to stop.  It's time they're expected to be responsible citizens.  It's time for them to stop filling our courts and prisons.  It's time for 'black' churches to start preaching the true Gospel instead of the rehasing and hate of 150 years ago.

Like a friend told me" for 45yrs we as a country have been pushing God away, Nov.4,2008 God gave us what we wanted! Note this: We are now a Godless country, We will now watch MANS law Rule and not GODS, It's going to get bad and I hope your ready.

And people are oh so tring to be politically correct with the African-American.

So let me get this straight. all blacks that are BORN in this country are African-American.

But yet all whites are cauca. So if they are all african-americans then I'm british-american or dutch-american.

I think not. I'm an AMERICAN. I was born in this country hence I'm an AMERICAN. If i was born in another country and the became a citizen of the US THEN I'd be a Dutch-American.

Point I'm makin. ALL you  " African-Americans " stop calling yourself that. Your not african you American. Again unless you where born in African and then became a citizen of the US.

Wonderful to see our first BLACK President. Now I dont have to worry under the Obama rule about paying for gas, House payments.  Speaking of Payments. Can I have my new welfare check now. Being as the GOVERNMENT has screwed US. Not Bush.. No People take your blinders off. It's the government who has screwed us no the Rep's og Dem's. All Parties.

Thought it was " For the People,By the People"

    Thought they worked for US.

Seems to me it's been look out for the special Intrest groups and whatever trickles down everyone else can try to get some.. Going to still be same ol same ol. Look out for the rich while the great americans who run and build this country suffer even more.

Hi Jim, please don't trivialize my people's struggles when you have not walked in my shoes. Please do not attempt to make mockery and incist that no racial tensions exist or that they do not STILL prevent some people who are worthy of leadership and reward from rising through the ranks. Please do not make mockery of my struggles and make light of my plight when you have no idea what it is like to be black in this country. In fact, with your snide comments and the dozens of other snide comments on here, I think it should be pretty clear that your perceptions of my people are very negative at the onset - which already leaves me with an uneven playing field because I am constantly trying to prove that I am not a "media born stereotype." What ought to be interesting is will White people who held so many negative perceptions of black people as a whole, will see that Obama represents what a lot of black American's would like to strive for, he is intelligent, well spoken, about his family, community and an upstanding citizen. This is something that all people should strive to be - not just black people.

    Well said meanie.

Jim - the first time I (a WASP) experienced an incident was age 13, some girl I knew shrieked "N-lover" at another girl across the street from the middle school, and I was shocked, not having been raised that way.  (My dad was a doctor, both parents were Christian, and tried to not be a hypocrites.)  That was backwater Ohio, about 1970.  There were a few "black" families in town, probably due to the Underground Railroad, and without doubt they were discriminated against.  You cannot hide being a person of African descent - at least not if you have those features - like you can hide being Catholic or Jewish - a problem for people in the past.  My grandpa would not let his daughters date Catholics.  It's stupid, I know, but it was what it was.  Times are changing, socially, and thankfully for the better.

Poor whites are just as miserable as poor blacks.  Instead of "colors" and droopy pants of the poor black kids, the poor white kids are rude, crude, and tatoo'd. Who wants to hire either group?  Besides McDonalds - maybe.  (I switched my kids' pediatrician when not only was the office staff not that great, when the white girl leaned over and her tatoos showed - in between her love handles, so unprofessional - and gross - we went elsewhere.) These kids need some help in getting their priorities straight - teachers can only do so much. Character education needs to come from home, but it kids of any color are not getting it there, well, guess school is "it", the community is going to have to chip in.  Volunteer at your local school, they need time more than they need money, and grandparent-like volunteers are very helpful to little kids - especially those stuck in 6-to-6 before and after school care - while their parents struggle in lousy jobs.  You know, NOT on welfare.

Hopefully education will now be the great equalizer - it worked BIG TIME for Obama.  Parents who are clueless need help, their kids need help.  Regardless of ethnic background, getting an education and if not college, trade school, needs to be a national priority.

This is ridiculous, the polls showed more African Americans voted this year than any year ever, so that's saying the only reason they voted is because there was a African American running for office. What if there were two white Americans running? I bet there wouldn't of been as many African Americans that would have voted, right? So the only reason Obama won was because people voted on race not because they really care about who is the president!!!

I find it amazing that after eight years of disaster, all people can think pf is the skin color of President Elect Obama. You people are bitter, ignorant fools. I voted for Obama because he is the best for this country. He is intelligent, dignified, and will work with and for the people of this country. The fact that he is black means that intelligent people looked beyond color and put the best candidate in the highest office in the world.

Well said Salem.  Barack Obama is the best man for the job.  His professionalism during his campaign was of  the highest.  It was very obvious during the campaign where the hate and bigotry were coming from.  News flash, Obama is a president that just happens to be black.  He is also a president that will represent all of the people and hopefully bring us together.  Truth be told, he is biracial but is characterized as African American which he is.  Meanie 2 u, you are correct that there are obviously so many negative views of black Americans; it is pathetic.   To those of you condemning the black church, unless you have ever been to one, you have nothing to comment on.  It is sad to see such ignorant, uneducated fools in this day and age.

I hope and believe that everything that has happened is for the better, and regardless of who I voted for they will have my support.  The one thing that I do find fault with is that we as a people are all too often concerned with this thing of I'm a "this-American, or I'm a That-American.  I realize that this country was founded by immigrants, and that many from different ethnic groups have contributed to the greatness of this country but I also believe that we do ourselves no justice by defining ourselves with the above association.  When was the last time you heard someone from another country refer to themselves as "I'm an African-Briton, or I'm a Lebanese-German or maybe a Brazilian-Frenchman"?  Really, as far as I can see, we are the only country that is obsessed with this, it's almost like a self inflicted wound that we continue to carry and pick at that never heals.  Yes it is true that Mr. Obama is half white, so rightfully it is his call how he wants to be categorized, but I would bet that if he is as astute as he is, he would simply be satisfied calling himself an "American".  If we could just be satisfied and proud to be called "AMERICANS", I believe this country and we as a people would be the better off for it.  Hopefully the time is near when one day we can all claim that we are Americans Remember our ethnicity, but accept and be proud of our citizenship.

This has to be the most stupid population ever.  Lets all gather in the streets and dance for joy!!! Obama won!!!!  Why is it so important that a black man won? I just do not get it.  The black people are always saying its time to get treated right, well they would be treated like everyone else, if they acted like everyone else.  Stop acting like we owe you something because your great Gradma had to ride in the back of the bus.  Get over it and move on.  How can things change if the black people won't let them? I do not think slavery was right, it was very wrong but to move ahead you have to stop looking back.  Im sorry, but get over your color problems and act like everyone else.

Are you all freakin kidding me?  We are actually now going to get into an argument about who has the right termto describe this man???  How about American?  How about American with an ethnic background?  Oh no that won't do because other than native Americans, WE ALL HAVE ANOTHER LOCATION IN THE WORLD ETHNIC BACKGROUND!!!!!!

This is a great day for all of us, black, white, hispanic, native American, jew and gentile, gay and straight, old or young,  male or female,  on and on.  Those were the words that we heard from Barack Obama last night.  Those were the words of what America should be all about.  Those are the words of someone that will respect everyones views and backgrounds and make the decisions that by a large vote majority of country are now his to make.

He was a class act last night.  John McCain was a class act last night.  Let's all make an effort to match their class instead of the subtle racism of now trying to define a label that allows people to say he is not "one of us" so you can dehumanize / fear / hate him.

America has an opportunity to do the right thing after the incredible embarrassment of the last 8 years of destroying our economy, our military preparedness, morale and capacity, and our constitution.  Not to mention our reputation around the world.

I would not want to put the responsibility of what Gdub and the Dick have done to us and our credibility on anyone, but this new president is going into it with his eyes open and a clear, defined win in the election.  Let's give him the support to do what we have elected him to do and leave the "how black is he" or how do we redefine his background so that we do not have to actually identify with him as "Americans" to the small group of hard core racists that are always going to be out there.

Give him a shot at it.  Gdub had 6 years of total control with only 271 Electoral votes and lost the popular vote.  And the last two years of the intimidation of a marginally democratic congress with "if you vote against me you are for terrorists and against the troops."

We have today a man that actually won.  As John McCain said last night, it is time for us to work to help OUR president to do what we need to get the country back on track.

I'm just so damn excited to have an African American in the White House!

Who cares if he doesn't have the foggiest idea what he's doing?

Who cares if he want's to turn the US into a Marxist society?

Who cares if he's going to be the "Robin-in-the-Hood"?

He's African American damnit, and that's really all that matters!

I can't wait to write my check to the "Pay A Negro Back Fund". Or as some people like to call it: TAXES!

As a matter of fact, I'd like to sponsor one Negro for a dollar a day, and receive photos and a monthly progress report. I want to do my part for the starving Negros living in thatch huts, with flies on their faces, and distended stomachs due to over-nutrition, that reside helplessly, scattered about remote parts of THE UNITED STATES!

SERIOUSLY.........................In the immortal words of Bruce Hornsby "GET A JOB"!

ClintH - To say that you are IGNORANT, is putting it mildly. How many white people are on welfare? Wait, don't answer that question - we know its more than blacks because there aren't enough black people in the country to constitute a diffrent number. Its called mathematics and it does not lie! The bigger question is why do you think that all of a sudden your tax dollars that are used to improve the ENTIRE country infrastructure are going to be suddenly given to the "negroes" as you put it?

Last I checked, some of us "negroes" make some pretty damn good money and we worked TWICE as hard to get it whether you acknowledge it or not. Go back to the caves and try again, people are coming together not trying to be further torn apart by hateful inciteful remarks like yours...

Wow, one can see how the voters placed their votes according to ethnicity. Its a very sad day in American politics, and of course this is very divisive for America in the future. We shouldnt celebrate anyones' ethnicity nor their gender nor age as the reason for voting for them or against them Just shows how America is still very divided in terms of its ethnicities. There wont be any real change anyways as the American economy will likely worsen with the many age old socialistic types of economic plans that Im sure we are going to see unveiled by those from the Democratic party. So when you vote, in 2012 for a new candidate, make sure they are going to grow the economy rather than just buy votes with half baked handouts to those parts of industry that dont need the help. This financial bailout is terrible as we can see only a few are really going to benifit. Im waiting for mortgages to go down due to the lower fed funds rates. Obama and the Democrats could do America proud by forcing the banks to lower mortgage rates to match the longer term treasury rates. Hey, who is running Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, can they lower the cost of mortgage for the so called common man, the one that so foolishly voted for change, but a change that never really was explained. Who's talking all of a sudden?

And to answer your question, it's a little thing called "redistribution of wealth".

And if you don't think Obama will try to push some sort of Reparations Act for the grieving families of people who once knew a cousin who once had a friend who knew a guy who went to school with some guys half-brother who once knew a slave, I'll be looking for meanie2u when the checks start rolling, so I can go into more detail for ya.

I'm guessing my skin color will prohibit me from making a case for my share of the "wealth".

Just a simple question. Can a person that has a black father and a white mother be considered a true African-American?

Clint, let me put it to you like this. Let's reverse the roles. If you were minding your business in Europe and African's traveled to another continent, stole it from another people, decimated their population and then decided that they needed to build up that continent but since they needed the work to be done for cheap, why not have slaves. So they sent for you with guns, forced you over here to build up the country, beat, killed, raped, tortured, prevented you from reading, considered you less than half a man, prevented you from obtaining land (after slavery); created laws to get you out of any land that you managed to get, burned your churches, separated your families and then all of a sudden said - we'll your free now so do what you need to do. Meanwhile, still secretly and openly hating you merely for the color of your skin and systematically trying to prevent you from rising to any form of power because they are so scared that you will do what we have done to you, how damn rosy would you feel about reparations?

You have like a 300 year lead on building wealth on African American's and still you see no injustice, until people like you wake up we will have a long way to go in this country on race relations. To GOD be the glory for he is good all the time and all the time he is good and he will see us through this momentous time in our history as he has before.

What is all this african american celebrate crap, last I checked he was also half white, and raised by those white people. Why is it that society is chosing to forget that bit of info, what cause the people who raised him no longer are alive so now he is full black. I DONT THINK SO! And why is it that just african american witness history, what is the white race blind deaf and dumb now? I think we as well have witnessed a historic change. This one sided biasedness needs to end now.

I am very confused now. White people who did not vote for Obama are racist but black people who did not vote for McCain is not racist. Can someone please explain to me. I'm neither black nor white so please do explain...I really want to understand this.

@ Denise, who said that white people who did not vote Obama were racist? White people voted for Obama, black people voted for McCain too, not everybody agreed with either candidates positioning on economy, taxes, etc.

The only reason this conversation has turned to race is because the article is marking that this is an historic event for African Americans and some (and I meant some) white people who seem to have a separate agenda other than disagreeing with Obama's policies are turning it into race warfare - accusing black people and other minorities of being welfare receipients, wanting a handout and merely voting for Obama (a black man is what they consider him to be) because of our desire to be "kept" by the govt.

The argument is fallacious and hateful as it brings to the surface the mentality that black people are helpless, lazy and want somebody to give them something and I resent it because I know that its not true. No black person I have EVER talked to has ever mentioned something like this as a reason for voting PERIOD. Before there was a black candidate, blacks voted overwhelmingly for the Democratic ticket - roughly 95% so they are making this into something ridiculous. If we didn't agree with what Obama was proposing, we wouldn't vote for him no matter how "black" he is being considered. People didn't vote for Al Sharpton, people didn't for Rev. Jackson when he ran - they are too polarizing and sometimes miss the point. The same is true for Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin - they are also very polarizing - either you love them or you hate them.

But as I said before, I resent the perception that black people are too stupid to apply critical thinking to their decisions, its racist and its hateful.

After all, we white folk have had 300 years head start on the wealth aspect huh?

That's the problem I have, it could be 500 years or two years, and you'll still have the same bitch.

I sold my plantation 100 years ago!

How long before Obama tries to push some sort of "Reperations Act"?

My ancestors came from Ireland, you know the "white @!$%#s" as we were known long loooooong ago.

Should I be getting some sort of reperations as well?

The Democrats love nothing more than us talking about race instead of there failures of the last 2 years.

They have had Bush to Blame for everything for the last 2 years but thats over now.there will be no hiding from there records and the failures. The media will again turn on them just as they did with Clinton.

I believe Obama’s election has done a great deal for racism. It proves that race is not a factor as it was 30 years ago. It proves that hard work and dedication is the key to success, not affirmative action.  We all must remember, while Obama is black, he is only half African-American. His is also Caucasian. He grew up in Asian country for a time with a large Muslim population. Do not choose only one side of the race card. He represents many segments of the United States. He should check “other” on the census and unite the people of the US as Americans. If we focus only that he is African America, then it is still racism!

When 95% of the blacks across the US vote for him, it's racism.  Had 95% of the whites voted for McCain the blacks would've screamed "racism", and since they are the ones who 'know' all about race then it is.

Just putting it out there that Obama got over 95% of the African-American vote where as the national average was near 51% for him 49% against him for the popular. That being so if it was just policy and the group had followed the mindframe of all other americans (all other races included) their vote should not have been 44% over the average. This skewing is indicative of another factor, being that most Americans are thinking of the issues the candidates present, this cannot be the reason for the skewing because otherwise it would have been near the national trend.

                    Hm racial reasons much?

By the way, if you think I'm making things up, I'm not look it up.

Amazing Amazing Amazing - for years whites have voted for whites and not a peep was heard from anyone....everybody's complaining that blacks voted for Obama just because he's black, but no one said anything about whites who didn't for the exact same reason.  Please give people some credit, I know it's hard to believe, but black people wouldn't have just supported any black person who ran.  Barack Obama is an extraordinary person, so much so that he transcended race and rose to victory on the content of his character...which is how it should be.  I truly hope President-Elect Obama accomplishes his goal in making the nation properous and united...that includes the entire nation.

Again, GOD Bless Obama, Biden, McCain, Palin, and their families, and GOD Bless America.

I have never refered to Barack as anything other than Barack Obama. He is not black he is not white, he is an American, and has unified us and the party.

There were just as many Americans on either side that voted for him, white, black, republican democrat.. I think lowering it to race when race had nothing to do with it. Not one race elected him, race did not win him anything, he won because he was the BEST AMERICAN for the job.

I am not black, and have never realized how hung up people were on race, ON BOTH SIDES, the way both sides have been bickering all day today, shows that there is racism on both sides of the fence, and maybe, just maybe you all will both stop being so angry, and start realizing you are all here for the same thing.

My husband, father , grandfather great grandfather, have all gone to war so we could all be AMERICANS.. None of them ever asked which color they were fighting for and this conversation of race should stop now, you are belittling this wonderful day where we showed that in America at least 52% of are not racist, and how great the older generations stigmatisms are no longer the norm..

                      CONGRATS to US!

Yes. Obama is bi-racial. However, the bigots on this posting are using the black half of his ancestry as a tool to degrade the man. They are showing their ignorance, so they should be spoken to in an ignorant fashion.

McCain gave a beautiful concession speech last night, the crowd, however, were far from decent, booing when Obama was mentioned. All the while Palin had a smirk on her face that really needed to be slapped off. McCain acted nobly, the followers and neophyte did not.

Black or White, I hope this is a step in the right direction for our country to become united and not divided by race.  I do think that Obama winning the election is huge for African Americans in our country.  It also says a lot about the fact that whites are not as racist as some may think.  I could care less what Obama's race is.  He is just as much white as he is black and everyone needs to remember that, including Obama himself!!!!!  It is time for people to get over the race issue and that is hard for some to do when all the media does is continue to divide us when all they talk about are things like, "the black voters" and "the white voters".  Watching the polls tonight was a joke and it really pissed me off.  They would click on their screen to show what percentage of blacks or whites were voting for each candidate in each area.  It was ridiculous!!!  I really don't think that it was important for the world to know how we were voting if we were white or black.  It was good to know that there was a great voter turn out and that is all that matters.

                              BLACK SLAVEOWNERS

                              By Robert M. Grooms

In an 1856 letter to his wife Mary Custis Lee, Robert E. Lee called slavery "a moral and political evil." Yet he concluded that black slaves were immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, socially and physically.

The fact is large numbers of free Negroes owned black slaves; in fact, in numbers disproportionate to their representation in society at large. In 1860 only a small minority of whites owned slaves. According to the U.S. census report for that last year before the Civil War, there were nearly 27 million whites in the country. Some eight million of them lived in the slaveholding states.

The census also determined that there were fewer than 385,000 individuals who owned slaves (1). Even if all slaveholders had been white, that would amount to only 1.4 percent of whites in the country (or 4.8 percent of southern whites owning one or more slaves).

In the rare instances when the ownership of slaves by free Negroes is acknowledged in the history books, justification centers on the claim that black slave masters were simply individuals who purchased the freedom of a spouse or child from a white slaveholder and had been unable to legally manumit them. Although this did indeed happen at times, it is a misrepresentation of the majority of instances, one which is debunked by records of the period on blacks who owned slaves. These include individuals such as Justus Angel and Mistress L. Horry, of Colleton District, South Carolina, who each owned 84 slaves in 1830. In fact, in 1830 a fourth of the free Negro slave masters in South Carolina owned 10 or more slaves; eight owning 30 or more (2).

According to federal census reports, on June 1, 1860 there were nearly 4.5 million Negroes in the United States, with fewer than four million of them living in the southern slaveholding states. Of the blacks residing in the South, 261,988 were not slaves. Of this number, 10,689 lived in New Orleans. The country's leading African American historian, Duke University professor John Hope Franklin, records that in New Orleans over 3,000 free Negroes owned slaves, or 28 percent of the free Negroes in that city.

To return to the census figures quoted above, this 28 percent is certainly impressive when compared to less than 1.4 percent of all American whites and less than 4.8 percent of southern whites. The statistics show that, when free, blacks disproportionately became slave masters.

The majority of slaveholders, white and black, owned only one to five slaves. More often than not, and contrary to a century and a half of bullwhips-on-tortured-backs propaganda, black and white masters worked and ate alongside their charges; be it in house, field or workshop. The few individuals who owned 50 or more slaves were confined to the top one percent, and have been defined as slave magnates.

In 1860 there were at least six Negroes in Louisiana who owned 65 or more slaves The largest number, 152 slaves, were owned by the widow C. Richards and her son P.C. Richards, who owned a large sugar cane plantation. Another Negro slave magnate in Louisiana, with over 100 slaves, was Antoine Dubuclet, a sugar planter whose estate was valued at (in 1860 dollars) $264,000 (3). That year, the mean wealth of southern white men was $3,978 (4).

In Charleston, South Carolina in 1860 125 free Negroes owned slaves; six of them owning 10 or more. Of the $1.5 million in taxable property owned by free Negroes in Charleston, more than $300,000 represented slave holdings (5). In North Carolina 69 free Negroes were slave owners (6).

In 1860 William Ellison was South Carolina's largest Negro slaveowner. In Black Masters. A Free Family of Color in the Old South, authors Michael P. Johnson and James L. Roak write a sympathetic account of Ellison's life. From Ellison's birth as a slave to his death at 71, the authors attempt to provide justification, based on their own speculation, as to why a former slave would become a magnate slave master.

At birth he was given the name April. A common practice among slaves of the period was to name a child after the day or month of his or her birth. Between 1800 and 1802 April was purchased by a white slave-owner named William Ellison. Apprenticed at 12, he was taught the trades of carpentry, blacksmithing and machining, as well as how to read, write, cipher and do basic bookkeeping.

On June 8, 1816, William Ellison appeared before a magistrate (with five local freeholders as supporting witnesses) to gain permission to free April, now 26 years of age. In 1800 the South Carolina legislature had set out in detail the procedures for manumission. To end the practice of freeing unruly slaves of "bad or depraved" character and those who "from age or infirmity" were incapacitated, the state required that an owner testify under oath to the good character of the slave he sought to free. Also required was evidence of the slave's "ability to gain a livelihood in an honest way."

Although lawmakers of the time could not envision the incredibly vast public welfare structures of a later age, these stipulations became law in order to prevent slaveholders from freeing individuals who would become a burden on the general public.

Interestingly, considering today's accounts of life under slavery, authors Johnson and Roak report instances where free Negroes petitioned to be allowed to become slaves; this because they were unable to support themselves.

Black Confederates and Afro-Yankees in Civil War Virginia (University Press of Virginia-1995) was written by Ervin L. Jordan Jr., an African-American and assistant professor and associate curator of the Special Collections Department, University of Virginia library. He wrote: "One of the more curious aspects of the free black existence in Virginia was their ownership of slaves. Black slave masters owned members of their family and freed them in their wills. Free blacks were encouraged to sell themselves into slavery and had the right to choose their owner through a lengthy court procedure."

In 1816, shortly after his manumission, April moved to Stateburg. Initially he hired slave workers from local owners. When in 1817 he built a gin for Judge Thomas Watries, he credited the judge nine dollars "for hire of carpenter George for 12 days." By 1820 he had purchased two adult males to work in his shop (7). In fewer than four years after being freed, April demonstrated that he had no problem perpetuating an institution he had been released from. He also achieved greater monetary success than most white people of the period.

On June 20, 1820, April appeared in the Sumter District courthouse in Sumterville. Described in court papers submitted by his attorney as a "freed yellow man of about 29 years of age," he requested a name change because it "would yet greatly advance his interest as a tradesman." A new name would also "save him and his children from degradation and contempt which the minds of some do and will attach to the name April." Because "of the kindness" of his former master and as a "Mark of gratitude and respect for him" April asked that his name be changed to William Ellison. His request was granted.

In time the black Ellison family joined the predominantly white Episcopalian church. On August 6, 1824 he was allowed to put a family bench on the first floor, among those of the wealthy white families. Other blacks, free and slave, and poor whites sat in the balcony. Another wealthy Negro family would later join the first floor worshippers.

Between 1822 and the mid-1840s, Ellison gradually built a small empire, acquiring slaves in increasing numbers. He became one of South Carolina's major cotton gin manufacturers, selling his machines as far away as Mississippi. From February 1817 until the War Between the States commenced, his business advertisements appeared regularly in newspapers across the state. These included the Camden Gazette, the Sumter Southern Whig and the Black River Watchman.

Ellison was so successful, due to his utilization of cheap slave labor, that many white competitors went out of business. Such situations discredit impressions that whites dealt only with other whites. Where money was involved, it was apparent that neither Ellison's race or former status were considerations.

In his book, Ervin L. Jordan Jr. writes that, as the great conflagration of 1861-1865 approached: "Free Afro-Virginians were a nascent black middle class under siege, but several acquired property before and during the war. Approximately 169 free blacks owned 145,976 acres in the counties of Amelia, Amherst, Isle of Wight, Nansemond, Prince William and Surry, averaging 870 acres each. Twenty-rune Petersburg blacks each owned property worth $1,000 and continued to purchase more despite the war."

Jordan offers an example: "Gilbert Hunt, a Richmond ex-slave blacksmith, owned two slaves, a house valued at $1,376, and $500 in other properties at his death in 1863." Jordan wrote that "some free black residents of Hampton and Norfolk owned property of considerable value; 17 black Hamptonians possessed property worth a total of $15,000. Thirty-six black men paid taxes as heads of families in Elizabeth City County and were employed as blacksmiths, bricklayers, fishermen, oystermen and day laborers. In three Norfolk County parishes 160 blacks owned a total of $41,158 in real estate and personal property.

The general practice of the period was that plantation owners would buy seed and equip~ ment on credit and settle their outstanding accounts when the annual cotton crop was sold. Ellison, like all free Negroes, could resort to the courts for enforcement of the terms of contract agreements. Several times Ellison successfully sued white men for money owed him.

In 1838 Ellison purchased on time 54.5 acres adjoining his original acreage from one Stephen D. Miller. He moved into a large home on the property. What made the acquisition notable was that Miller had served in the South Carolina legislature, both in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate, and while a resident of Stateburg had been governor of the state. Ellison's next door neighbor was Dr. W.W. Anderson, master of "Borough House, a magnificent 18th Century mansion. Anderson's son would win fame in the War Between the States as General "Fighting Dick" Anderson.

By 1847 Ellison owned over 350 acres, and more than 900 by 1860. He raised mostly cotton, with a small acreage set aside for cultivating foodstuffs to feed his family and slaves. In 1840 he owned 30 slaves, and by 1860 he owned 63. His sons, who lived in homes on the property, owned an additional nine slaves. They were trained as gin makers by their father (8). They had spent time in Canada, where many wealthy American Negroes of the period sent their children for advanced formal education. Ellison's sons and daughters married mulattos from Charleston, bringing them to the Ellison plantation to live.

In 1860 Ellison greatly underestimated his worth to tax assessors at $65,000. Even using this falsely stated figure, this man who had been a slave 44 years earlier had achieved great financial success. His wealth outdistanced 90 percent of his white neighbors in Sumter District. In the entire state, only five percent owned as much real estate as Ellison. His wealth was 15 times greater than that of the state's average for whites. And Ellison owned more slaves than 99 percent of the South's slaveholders.

Although a successful businessman and cotton farmer, Ellison's major source of income derived from being a "slave breeder." Slave breeding was looked upon with disgust throughout the South, and the laws of most southern states forbade the sale of slaves under the age of 12. In several states it was illegal to sell inherited slaves (9). Nevertheless, in 1840 Ellison secretly began slave breeding.

While there was subsequent investment return in raising and keeping young males, females were not productive workers in his factory or his cotton fields. As a result, except for a few females he raised to become "breeders," Ellison sold the female and many of the male children born to his female slaves at an average price of $400. Ellison had a reputation as a harsh master. His slaves were said to be the district's worst fed and clothed. On his property was located a small, windowless building where he would chain his problem slaves.

As with the slaves of his white counterparts, occasionally Ellison's slaves ran away. The historians of Sumter District reported that from time to time Ellison advertised for the return of his runaways. On at least one occasion Ellison hired the services of a slave catcher. According to an account by Robert N. Andrews, a white man who had purchased a small hotel in Stateburg in the 1820s, Ellison hired him to run down "a valuable slave. Andrews caught the slave in Belleville, Virginia. He stated: "I was paid on returning home $77.50 and $74 for expenses.

William Ellison died December 5, 1861. His will stated that his estate should pass into the joint hands of his free daughter and his two surviving sons. He bequeathed $500 to the slave daughter he had sold.

Following in their father's footsteps, the Ellison family actively supported the Confederacy throughout the war. They converted nearly their entire plantation to the production of corn, fodder, bacon, corn shucks and cotton for the Confederate armies. They paid $5,000 in taxes during the war. They also invested more than $9,000 in Confederate bonds, treasury notes and certificates in addition to the Confederate currency they held. At the end, all this valuable paper became worthless.

The younger Ellisons contributed more than farm produce, labor and money to the Confederate cause. On March 27, 1863 John Wilson Buckner, William Ellison's oldest grandson, enlisted in the 1st South Carolina Artillery. Buckner served in the company of Captains P.P. Galliard and A.H. Boykin, local white men who knew that Buckner was a Negro. Although it was illegal at the time for a Negro to formally join the Confederate forces, the Ellison family's prestige nullified the law in the minds of Buckner's comrades. Buckner was wounded in action on July 12, 1863. At his funeral in Stateburg in August, 1895 he was praised by his former Confederate officers as being a "faithful soldier."

Following the war the Ellison family fortune quickly dwindled. But many former Negro slave magnates quickly took advantage of circumstances and benefited by virtue of their race. For example Antoine Dubuclet, the previously mentioned New Orleans plantation owner who held more than 100 slaves, became Louisiana state treasurer during Reconstruction, a post he held from 1868 to 1877 (10).

A truer picture of the Old South, one never presented by the nation's mind molders, emerges from this account. The American South had been undergoing structural evolutionary changes far, far greater than generations of Americans have been led to believe. In time, within a relatively short time, the obsolete and economically nonviable institution of slavery would have disappeared. The nation would have been spared awesome traumas from which it would never fully recover.

blah blah blah - it doesn't take away from the fact that Obama won!

It doesn't take away from the FACT that black people were dragged to this Country against their will and put into slavery and tortured and raped by white people for years and years even up until this day in 2008 black people are put down and called disparaging names and told they are not good enough -just sit and read all the racist comments on this board...enough is enough....could you and your family endure years of this kind of torture? I think not, you would be suicidal, but African Americans just proved how strong they are and made a statement that says never again will you torture them. Let them have their day! Nothing any white racist says today can take way the fact that they won. You can talk welfare and nonsense all you want today but no one is listening...just like the republican campaign - no one is listening!

May God have mercy on your soul

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I have been so upset throughout this whole process. The media definitely kept the black/white issue in the forefront. Obama is no more of a black man than he is a white man. Did everyone forget who his mother was. And you are right, lets hope that Obama does not forget what his gene pool is made up of. Obama is a moloto not a black man and not a white man...and you know what, who cares? It should not matter, however it sure seems to. People get real. Obama is a man. Not a black man, not a white man, he is a man. Hopefully a man that will be good for this country.

Damn negros still bellyaching. Do you actually believe you are the only race to be treated poorly in this country, better take a good long look around you stupid. Everyone who has ever come to these shores faced bigotry and adversity. the difference between you and them = you whined while they worked hard and assimilated themselves into American society. And please don't forget just exactly who sold you into slavery. Also remember you have been free to leave for a very long time now, but you have chosen to stay because you cling to the handouts all your whining has gotten you on the backs of hard working american men and women of many colors. I'm part native american - do you know what genocide means. That's what MY people faced. I don't whine, i don't look for handouts, i graduated, got a job, work everyday, pay taxes to aide those who can't or won't help themselves and their own families. If african americans were as strong as you want us to believe then why is it one simple word can knock the wind out of you? One man of color did what all men of any color should've been striving for and now the balance of black rabble who do nothing but leech will ride his coat tails as if they played a part in the making of this man. My god you are an ignorant lot.

Slavery in any form is wrong. But to believe American colonists were the only group perpetuating this practice is ignorant:

Slavery in general started thousands of years ago, when one group of people captured members of another group of people. The beginnings aren't certain, but it was going on in ancient Egypt, Rome, Greece, Japan, Ancient America... you name it.

Slavery in Africa also started thousands of years ago. When one tribe would battle with another, the "loosers" were often captured and forced to work or to be second class "wives" to tribsmen. When the Dutch traders visited Africa seeking something of value to trade, many of the tribes offered captured enemies as a comodity in exchange for the trinkets and other goods offered by the Dutch traders.

For many of the slaves, the conditions were better than they would have encountered had they remained the "property" of their enemies in Africa since many of them would have been murdered for their "crime" of being a member of the enemy tribe.

That is not to say that there was anything good about slavery. It was a truly evil practice, where one group of people considered themselves to be sufficiently superior to another that they felt the right to "own" a fellow human being.

It is generally agreed that the world has become a little more enlightened in the not too distant past, and we have learned to treat even our enemies with enough respect that they are no longer considered slaves.

                              http://wiki.answers.com/Q/When_did_black_slavery_start

And to believe that is is no longer being practiced is foolish as well:

Slavery still exists in the US.

Estimates by the US State Department suggest up to 17,500 slaves are brought into the US every year, with 50,000 of those working as prostitutes, farm workers or domestic servants.

According to the CIA, more than 1,000,000 people are enslaved in the US today. Thousands of cases go undetected each year and many are difficult to take to court as it can be difficult to prove force or legal coercion.

Slavery is hidden behind many other names, thus disguising it from society.

These names are chattel slavery (the traditional meaning of slavery), bonded labor, trafficking, forced labor, and forced marriage, amongst others.

Human trafficking has recently been described as “the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the world.”

Many slave-produced goods might reach your home without you realizing their origin.

Industries where slave labor is often highly suspected include cocoa, cotton, steel, oriental rugs, diamonds and silk. Currently the only way to ensure the products you buy are slave-free is to buy Fair Trade certified goods.

                              http://matadorchange.com/10-shocking-facts-about-global-slavery-in-2008/

While I did not vote for Obama let's put aside the hatred, band together and show the world that America IS a force to be taken seriously.

To do otherwise would be a diservice to our troops. To continue to mire in the "race/slavery" issue just proves America can not move beyond our past, and has no future.

                              God bless America!

This is to Laura, the one saying everyone that came to this country had it hard. GET REAL! The OTHERS that came here came of their own accord, not shackled in the underbelly of freaking slave ships, tossed overboard alive if the ships load had to be lightened. My grandparents came here from Italy, They worked their aSSes off and made a good life for their children. Yes, they were treated badly at first, but they were NEVER slaves, they NEVER had to worry about being sold never to see their families again. I would love for you to put yourself for one moment in the mind of a people whos ancestors had to go through that, my guess is that you would be bellyaching louder than any of them.

I cannot believe the level of ignorance it takes to make the statement (below) that Laura  - 408659 made.  Laura, do you actually believe that there was any other race that was shipped like cord wood from Africa to America and those that survived the starvation, abuse and disease then sold to a lifetime of slavery?  The only thing close to it is the genocide that was practiced on the Native Americans.
Any Italians or French or Irish or Scots or Blegians, or Spanish, or Russians or....... want to speak up and review a history that includes slavery?  All these ethnic groups might have been "treated poorly" but I think that slavery is just a little bitmore serious than being treated poorly.  I am not one to say that we need to make reparations or relive the past or hold a collective guilt for what our ancestors did to eachother, but to equate this to "negros bellyachin" is beyond the pale of ignorance!

Hey I too wanted to reply to Laura and Salem. Salem I believe the Native Americans were not given theoption of slavery. They were not only hunted down like savages and destroyed on THIER land they were raped, starved, taken over andstolen from then placed in small areas called reservations. Where some still resided. Oh and I guess the gov. gave them back a small part of the land the had claimed. Good Karen, I had many concerns with BO and none of it his white/black self but his inabiltiy to answer important questions about himself. I do support him but I was wondering if he had lost last night what kinda of looting and mob related activities would have happen. That seems to be the "MO" when the black population does not get the answer it wants. Don't attack just look at the past.

sherry, you also realise that native americans held black slaves, they also have a long history of stealing from and raping the women of other tribes, there are even tribes in the north who sided with the white folks and helped to kill other tribes. so dont blame the whites for everything, the indians turned on their own to help the whites and whites are still paying for it today since all native americans get given benefits so they dont have to work

Does this mean middle class doesn't have to pay for welfare and food stamps and lets not forget medical for having 6 kids and can we now  also take off discrimination off the table. No more programs either, but im sure Jesse Jackson and AL sharp ton will still cry if they don't get NAACP money. You think you don't see blacks on TV now just wait .That's all i see now on every news show.Don'T forget to thank the white people for him winning. But the popular vote was 52%-45% which means there's alot of people which would be white sense 97% of blacks voted for him..You think if he said no more programs for blacks they would still vote for him AND THEY SAY BLACK ARE NOT EDUCATED..Hold on people..

Someone has used you. I spent the last 3 days working with lots of white and black people trying to get Obama elected. He will never allow us to forget he is of yje white race as well as the black race.

Tomorrow I go back to being used by God in training kids of all races in tennis. They know regardless of their race, I care for them all.

God have mercy on this land.  Please bring out all the lies that Obama has told this country, before he can take office.  He is not American & therefore can not be Commander & Chief.  Amen

Sorry to disappoint you with facts but honey at some point in your life you have to face reality- but that's ok we all know how misinformed you are after all McCain/Palin did a good job of TRYING to spread hate and racism...but....YOU LOSE...check mate bigot!!!!!

lilegend.    Bigot. And McCain and Palin are the ones tring to spread hate and racism.

Guess the man Obama went to church with is a saint then. 20 yrs 500 sunday and he never heard him preach hate. Hard to believe.

Oh but thats right. Guess I'm a bigot and racist now because I dont believe a damn word Obama says.

People just get ready to be called every name in the book if you dont agree with Obama. And they call those people Bigots and racist. Time to look in the mirror when you call someone that.

Crockett - what a crock.  America is broke, and we are all in for a bad time.  It wouldn't have mattered which candidate won - we have to pay for the financial mess Shrub and his buddies created.

Obama is hardly divisive - but people like you are.  Posting the same drivel about he is not an American, blah blah blah.  Try doing something positive in your community, for a change.

here here!  they say racism doesn't exist??  really 95% of blacks voted for him.  I bet only 70% could give you a real reason other than free this and that....

Also the public as a whole voting this man in, boy the day of waking up and smelling the coffee is not far off for you.  Remember it will not be the pubs fault or Bush's anymore.  You ready to eat crow??

My nephew who is bi racial would like the answer to this question also, Why are you calling him black?  He is half n half just like me....... so the white half equals, nothing??

The saddest thing about this election and the voting public?  Unfortunately, the majority have never cracked a history book, most failed economics 101, and few can think critically or do a sociological risk analysis.

This current ranting and raving will be supplanted soon by a bunch of sheep who will look up and ask two questions.

First, “Where is all the green grass that was supposed to be spread around?”

Second, “Why does that sign say Obama Lamb Chop Factory?”

For my family it was not about race but the death of a GREAT NATION! While 52% of this country celebrated 45% of this nation sat quitely in there homes and watched America become a socialist nation without even a minor fight to stop it. It is ironic as we prepare for the Thanksgiving season, which remembers our founding fathers departure from England for freedom of religion and a better way of life for them and there children we just gave it all away. God help us now and the rest of the world. All of us who are decendents of those first Americans who gave so much to start this nation we can tell our children and grand children we were there to watch its demise.

I did not vote for Obama, but I do support him now that he is the next leader. I will always support the President no matter who he is or where he came from or what color you think he is. This is not the 1930's, it is 2008. We are all in a crisis and we have only us to blame. I know that sounds shocking, but WE made the world it is today. If Obama falls on his face, it is still not his falt, look at what he has on his plate. John McCain would have the same thing and like most citizens we would cast blame on the person in charge. To Obama and his family, GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  You have a tough road. As Americans we need to stand strong and let the Commander and Chief know what is best for this country and to push hard for those ideas. We will come out strong and we will move foward. I will never forget the sacrififce that McCain made for this country and the others who also have done the same. I believe and will always believe we will prevail. God Bless America and God Bless for those who Believe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course we all know he is the kind of politician who will promise anything to get elected just like Slick Willy. He ran on giving a middle class tax cut also and raised everyones taxes once in office. That is just the way Socialist Demobrats are. At least he want have his way with the Senate.

Why should I as a business owner be FORCED to accept less of a profit for providing people with a good life.  I pay my employess well and they receive paid benefits.  Im now either forced to take away from them or Im forced to close my business

This was and should still be our country. We have been lied to and mistreated since the europeans came over. Past presidents enforced the moving of people off thier lands. The blacks were sold by thier own people in thier native lands to the europeans to be slaves. Why doesnt the american blacks take offense of that fact? How would they feel to be in the shoes of the real native americans? Maybe it will take another hundred years, but we should regain control of the land that was ours. And I feel the Mexicans should get thier land back also, and send all the  (both black, asian and white) back to where ever they feel they need to go (then they may know what the real meaning of American is, and not have to put another word in front of American)

Obama was not the first minority to run for an office, and that person did not receive the massive support.

Born in the 60's I have never hollered 'whitey holding me down', even with negative feed back.  My educated family have always worked hard and taken care of our own. These nasty comments that are made prove what many Blacks and Whites and other nationalities say about this country.

Well now YOU are the minority (ignorant, not wanting to grow or change) and whether you like it or not - this country is revolving.  So either join and help or get the Hell out, it really doesn't matter to the rest of us.  The country has spoken and it was not just the minority races of the country speaking.

Or for that matter no matter which political party you are, that obama won is fantastic, it proves that everyone in america are ready for change, not just in politics but in how people in general see others. i'm irish, scottish, french, and english, does that make me any less american than the guy down the street that is german/african american? nope didn't think so, but we both voted for obama.

This election was based on money and "what can I get" rather than protection of the defenseless unborn and morality.  We will suffer in the years ahead with Obama's legislated immorality.

Ok, well I am a 42 year old white woman who knew from the start almost that I would be voting for him. This media cr*p is slowly making me wonder if the guy won because of the color of his skin. It makes me feel like the majority of blacks voted for the guy only because he's black. I really hope this isn't true, because white, black, brown, orange, green...who cares? I, for one, voted for him because I agreed with him on a lot of the issues. I want to think that others did the same. but I am beginning to wonder. That's not uplifting at all.

I don't know how many times it has to be said over and over again or how many times these retarted rightwings extremists are going to keep trying to spread lies...but OBAMA WAS BORN IN HAWAII, which the last time I checked a map, was part of the united states. His father was just Kenyan, dumbass, therefore you are going to feel extremely stupid when he is, in fact, sworn into office on Jan 20. And btw just to futher point out your ignorance, John McCain was not even born in the USA but in fact in a NAVAL BASE OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY. So if he was to become president, according to your logic neither would he be sworn into office. Man im so tired of stupid republicans (not all of them, just the extremist ones still living in the 1960's) naysaying  about socialism this and terrorist that even though there shallow arguments are constantly being disproven. Please don't forget that 100% of us did NOT vote for Obama and we are not ready for the change Obama will make.  I can not and will not support this president as I can not and will not support socialism or the many social programs that will be available to people that CHOOSE to have 6 children , have no education or jobs and think we owe them. Or to the people who expect the feds(Americans) to bail hem out of the houses they bought that did not take a rocket sceinctist  to see they couldn't afford, or the credit cards they maxed out on things they didn't need to survive. I also can not and will not support anyone who tried along with his supporters to pull the race card out anytime things did not go thier way. In my 54 years, I have never considered myself a racist, but to listen to the media, movie stars and Obama supporters constantly say others were if they disagreed with Obama, I guess I am.  I disagree  that it will unite Americans. It may unite some, but only until he screws up and once again us white people will take the blame. And for all of you that think you will get a free ride for the rest of your life....GET A LIFE. You have nothing because to have things you must work hard. And because I have, I am in no way willing to share the wealth with you.  And just to give you my backgroundd, I had 2 kids by 17, got a degree in college by paying my own way by working, and will continue to work hard for my grandchildren but certainly not anyone else.

I think the point is not that it is major hardship for her or any successful person, its why is their responsibilty to pay even more for others?  We would be better off if I chose to give you the money directly than to turn it over to the government who will ulitimately destroy its value (regardless of who is running Dem or Repub.)

Most of the world (heck even France!) gets this.  That is why they are lowering their taxes.  We have the 2nd highest tax rate of any developed country, do you think it is a coincidence that many of the companies are moving out of the US.  What do you think will happen when Obama raises taxes on the both individuals and corporations?  Some will move, some will reduce production, most will pass it on to the consumer.  It won't hurt Cindy to pay a little more at the register, but I think the guy you mention making $80K will definitely feel the sting of the unintended cosequences.

                                                                                                          • 1 vote

FINALLY, a positive future, something to look forward to!  Now we can walk with our heads held high.  Leadership we can trust and be proud of, something we have not been able to do for 8 long years.

Thank Goodness - what a glorious, happy, encouraging, and hopeful time!  I only hope the Lord watches over and protects Obama for his safety.  Unlike the 2004 election where the electoral vote put Bush in office, the results of this election is the PEOPLE'S choice.   A positive feel in attitudes and a true breath of fresh air.  The fact that most of the world agrees with the PEOPLE'S choice of this election should tell us something - the MAJORITY of us know what that is.

Face the facts, he is president and to simply think that he is in association with terrorist because of his middle name or the elementary school he was raised in is rediculous. Do us all a favor, do a little research before you post instead of simply reciting what you hear on fox news or at one of Palin's hate-obama rallys.

I just can not believe how he has fooled all the whites  and the blacks just voted for him because he has black skin if that is not racist then i do not know what is and i did not vote for either one i voted for some one else. While you are at it.Go to US Department of Labor, and you WILL see, that unemployment remains 25% HIGHER among Black Males than any other group in the Nation.Explain "HOW" all of those Jobs are out there, for "Lazy Blacks" to refuse to work, when MOST of them are in RED COMMUNIST CHINA,and UNAVOWED ENEMY Nation. When we work, according to "YOUR" types,we don't know how to do anything, when we can't FIND,or is refused work because of our skin COLOR ,we are lazy. You have your attention misdirected.Black peoples perception of the so called "Liberal Media" is by far MUCH different from White peoples."THEY" lead the parade on STEREOTYPING 63 million Black people byour MINORITY of Street "TRASH" and "WE" have NO outlet to defend ourselves against such stereotypes. We don't like our "TRASH" anymore that "YOU" like "YOURS".Those of you on this board, are clearly SHOWING your OWN hatred. You are weak, immature, and insecure, and the ONLY way you can "feel good" about yourselves is to RUN down Black people.I really PITY you.Especially those of you that "Play Church" in the name of Christianity.Everything God says DO,you "DON'T.Everything God says don't do,you "DO"."Christian"? The ONLY title I find in the Bible for Gods TRUE people is "BELIEVERS".Which means they believe What God SAYS and at least TRY to do ALL of it.Have  good life. This is my FINAL post on ANY interent message board,Where Satans people definitely RESIDE.Evil,Wicked,Hateful,Vicious, and Malicious people.

Face it: Obama's 1/2 black, 1/2 white, raised by his white grandmother. Makes him more white than anything, at least without looking in a mirror.

Articles and writers like this pick very low fruit; whereas, what people are also saying here seems a very valid point. Frankly, I'm bit surprised to be reading 90-some percent of blacks voted for Obama; meanwhile, whites were about 50-50. Seriously? You're the first I've read to bring up Christianity and the Bible. I'm Christian. I felt a responsibility to my faith ... not something so silly as color. So many African-Americans are, as you emphasize, "CHRISTIAN". So, Christians, is PRO-CHOICE a Christian concept? Obama's claiming both, but I fail to see the connection. A woman gets to snuff out a life based on what often amounts to a selfish CHOICE. Picking a president because you like his color is selfish. A candidate taking a stand in opposition to Biblical teaching for the sake of a job or great power is selfish. This country's failing based largely on selfishness, greed. As a reminder, all sin stems from selfishness.

Stepping away from faith, now's a very interesting time for a rookie to be in charge of the last "super power": strange war, worst economy since the Depression, relatively new concept of globalization that's kicking our butts, and so on. That's quite a bit for a "green" leader. Sounds like a well thought plan to me! Only time will tell now.

How do you know that more white people voted for him than black? Does it mean nothing that more African Americans came out to vote in this election than any other in history? Couldn't that be an indicator that yes, there might have been a large part of the vote based on backing a candidate on the color of his skin? How else could you explain the large African American turn out? Do you really think the African American turn out would have been so high if Ms. Clinton were the Democratic candidate? Kinda makes you wonder if racism really did in part help to get him elected.

My age, has absolutely nothing to do with my message, and my friend you will have me around for at least another 45 years if I live to the average age. My message mentioned nothing of my attitude toward minorities so I will just assume that you assume that everyone who has an opinion that doesn't agree with yours is either racist or ignorant. Now....when you grow up (as it sounds as though you are still inexperinced and very young based on your comments) you will see that my comments were those of a realist, and not a racist.  You have my permission to go back to your your nap, dreaming about how everything in the world is wonderful so long as it is how YOU expect it to be through your rose-colored glasses.

Do you realize that Obama got the second most white votes ever 43%, only one president got more, Jimmy Carter.
