Obama to make early mark on economy

advertisement

And now, let the lobbying begin.

Although the inauguration is nearly three months away, President-elect Barack Obama and his team already are hard at work on plans to address the rapidly deteriorating economy and continue repairing the battered financial sector.

Financial services, housing, energy and the auto industry are among the biggest sectors of the economy whose executives will be hoping — and lobbying — to benefit early in the new administration.

Among the most pressing problems is the rapid contraction of the auto industry, as sales have collapsed amid the credit crunch, deepening economic slowdown and sharp pullback in consumer spending. Obama is expected to meet in the next few weeks with the CEOs of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler to try to shore up the industry’s finances and head off the potential loss of millions of industry-related jobs.

Although financial markets have stabilized somewhat, and the credit freeze has begun to thaw, the repair of the financial services industry will be another pressing concern for the Obama administration. Given the sweeping powers Congress granted the Treasury under the $700 billion financial industry bailout bill last month, the beneficiaries could be broad-ranging.

Details of the plan are still taking shape and "there is little clarity" about major components of the program, Daniel Tenengauzer, head of global currencies strategy at Merrill Lynch, said in a note to clients Wednesday.

Another area likely to get attention early in the Obama administration is the energy sector. Obama has proposed spending $150 billion over 10 years to develop alternative energy sources including wind, solar and ethanol.

"It may not all be corn-based ethanol," said Christine Tezak, an analyst with the Stanford Group. "But a big component of Obama's goal is to bolster our domestic security by fostering fuels. And that includes renewables like ethanols, whether from corn or whether from cellulose."

Obama might not be as friendly to the nuclear industry. Although the Bush administration worked hard to jump-start a “renaissance” in construction of nuclear power plants, a plan enthusiastically supported by Sen. John McCain in his losing campaign, the Obama campaign has been lukewarm on nuclear, citing the problems of waste disposal and proliferation.

“He's tepid on nuclear,” said Branko Terzic, a former member of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and now a consultant with Deloitte. “He said he's waiting for the scientific evidence on waste disposal and some other issues. So I don't think nuclear will be a high priority in the Obama administration.”

Big Oil producers and refiners may face the loss of tax incentives that were a cornerstone of the Bush administration’s energy policy. This year's spike in energy prices prompted Obama to propose forcing oil companies to set aside a “reasonable share of their record-breaking windfall profits” to help consumers pay for gasoline. But it remains to be seen whether Congress would go along with the idea.

The battered housing industry is also seeking relief from the new administration, which faces decisions on a number of issues that have effectively been on hold in the final weeks of the campaign. Among them is the long-term future of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The government takeover of the two companies helped stop their financial hemorrhaging, but the long-running debate over whether to rebuild them — or split them up —now begins again in earnest.

So will the debate over how much further the government should go in providing relief for millions of homeowners facing foreclosure. A housing relief bill enacted last summer stopped short of direct government intervention. But in recent weeks, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Chairwoman Sheila Bair has been pressing a plan to use money from the financial rescue package to provide government guarantees for failing mortgages.

Democrats in Congress have also pushed unsuccessfully to change federal bankruptcy law to allow judges to modify home loans; that idea could find new support in Obama’s housing relief efforts.

As the impact of $100 billion in special tax rebates this year has faded, Congress is already considering another government spending package to get the economy going again. This time around, governors and other state and local officials are pressing for federal support for hundreds of projects to rebuild roads, water and sewer systems that are ready to go but lack funding. Contractors, raw materials suppliers and construction equipment makers would be immediate beneficiaries of that spending.

Given the pressing economic problems, Obama’s pledge to reform the health care system may get pushed further down on the list of priorities. But given the rising burden of health care on private industry and the government, it remains a major issue. Drugmakers could see price controls, although expanded insurance coverage could increase their customer base. Health care providers could be squeezed by cost-control efforts.

Political analysts have credited Obama with using technology to power his campaign. The president-elect has also enjoyed strong support from the high tech sector, including a high-profile endorsement from Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Now some in Silicon Valley expect Obama to return the favor.

“This is one of the youngest presidents the United States has ever had,” said venture capitalist Steve Westly. “He's forward looking. He understands the power of technology. He's someone who has grown up in a different era than past presidents. I think that’s going to be very good news for Silicon Valley.”

For all the debates, position papers and speeches, it remains to be seen how much of Obama’s agenda will become law. The first-term senator will have to draw on different skills as he assembles a Cabinet, navigates a new role as leader of the executive branch of government and confronts some of the biggest problems the country has faced in generations.

But Obama’s success in winning one of the country's longest and toughest political campaigns is a promising sign that he has those skills, according to former General Electric CEO Jack Welch. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and GE's NBC Universal.)

“If you look at management skills with execution as one of the real issues, this guy demonstrated, without question, the best execution I've ever seen in a presidential campaign and maybe management execution,” said Welch. “He came from a basement start-up to build an organization that was flawless. This is a manager. This is a real manager.”

The market has already spoken, just like this country.  Stock market lower, dollar value lower, and expectations of early recovery gone.

Jack Welch great example of leadership, your stock has fallen how far???????  Over 50% in the last 12 month's and almost 10% sence Obama was elected.  Ha! Ha!

AC, didn't you read the articles about the new figures on unemployment?  The report coming out on Friday is expected to show that 200,000 people lost their jobs last month.  Economists state that the figures are much higher than expected and the market is responding with a downturn.

This time there will be no republicans for the democrats to hang their stupid mistakes onto!  It's going to be fun watching them pointing fingers at each other.  We all need to remember that the left was attacking Bush for breathing as soon as he was elected... not waiting for him to be sworn in before they swore at him.

There is always a silver lining and I guess the good about this is that two of the worst senators are no longer in the senate!

Oh how short the memory of a dembot is.  All of the housing problems that came to fruition recently were started with a man from Arkansas in office.  I'm not saying Bush did a good job on the economy but when he tried to deal with some of the problems the democrats voted as one against him so they could pass the blame and get their guy in.  It was all one big game at the expense of the American people.  Both sides get plenty of blame, it wasn't just Bush.  The silver lining here is now that the democrats have the house, senate and oval office, there is no one to pass the blame to when they screw up more.  But to be fair, if they do a good job I'll stand up and applaud them.

What we are seeing is Congress already back to "business as usual" preparing to divert tax payers money by way of lobbying by special interest groups who represent corporations and big money.

The job losses are averaging 200,000 a month currently and increasing, there is going to be a huge need for benefits and assistance for these people. They also may lose their homes and ability to provide for their families.

Yet, money is still being given to banks, insurance companies and even billions more to foreign banks in South of our border. You can bet we are going to get taxed out of our skulls and have higher prices and inflation with even more job losses. The loss of consumer confidence and ability to spend be worse causing more job losses in an ever growing vicious cycle.

The new Administration and Congress will be facing some very angry voters and citizens if this keeps up any longer. All we need now is for the gas prices to start climbing up again since the election is over.

Tad, I think you can count on the gas prices to start climbing now that the election is over. And we still have until Jan 20, before the new administration takes office. Exactly, the auto industry has crappy gas guzzling products that's why they are bombing. We wanted more gas mileage 30 YEARS AGO! The housing industry built enough for people who could really buy homes for the next five years, they are done. Health care is so out of this world expensive NOONE can really afford it so they are screwing that up themselves. This all sounds like bad products that are taking a capitistic hit like they should. A couple of things I noticed... Toyota makes cars in the US, Honda makes cars in the US and Subaru makes cars in the US.  They all use American workers.  Ford makes cars in Mexico.  Chrysler makes cars in Canada.  Why are just Ford, Chrysler and GM involved with the talks?  It seems that those companies that build cars in the US, using US workers, should take a priority over the companies building abroad, even if they are 'American' companies.

BTW, Pat, I had an Olds LSS with a supercharged 3.8 that could run with just about any car around and got 30 to 33 on the highway... a big, comfortable problem free car that cost about the same as a loaded foreign car in it's class.  Of course, GM didn't advertise it and ended up shutting Olds down.

Health care is a right.   There should not be a decision as to whether someone is treated for an illness or not. Whether someone should receive life saving treatment or not based on if they have money or not.   We aren't talking about botox.  We are talking about basic health care which should not be considered a privilege.

What a man, what a leader and he's not even in the White house yet.  Something to aspire to, Jim Bo!!!

The market dipped as a reaction to the reports released today indicating that last quarter a large number of jobs were lost and the service industry has slowed significantly.  Please at least wait until he takes the oath before you start blaming...

thats not why the market dropped, it dropped because Bush was doing terrible things while we were distracted by the election.

This(stock market) is what we call "Big Oil" and "Bush & buddies" throwing a fit.

All you "Bush haters" are ridiculous.  Remember who has been in charge of the Congress for two years---the Democrats.  The President, regardless of who he is, is nothing more than a figure head.  What blows my mind is that the people of the USA have put a Democrat in the Presidency with a Democratic Congress that has a 9% favorability rating.  The only way Obama is going to make anything of his Presidency is to "grow some gonades" and go against his party occassionaly.  He hasn't shown that ability in the past.  This may be another Clinton election----give the Dems two years to screw things up, throw them out of office, Obama goes "centralist", things get accomplished with a GOP congress and a centralist Dem president.

If you knew anything about economics, it's bound to happen.

If you want to complain about this country's state of financial affairs, you should've complained to Bush and the likes of his aristrocratic fat-cat, money mongers.

Put your jealousies aside and deal with the fact that Dem's have always had much more concern over the nation's economic situations and this too will change; for the better!

How can you even talk about tax and spend when Bush administration has set record in spending.   At least with Democrats you know they will spend it on Americans and create jobs in the process,  not on unecessary wars.  It will take many years of Democratic rule to fix this mess.

                                  Wes,

You're right, and Fannie and Freddie were major contributors.  Too bad the Democrats who were defending Fannie and Freddie in 2004 didn't listen when there were people tellling them that they needed to put regulations in place or there could be catestrophic results.  And, yes, John McCain was one person trying to get those regulations in place.  The Demolishcrats were too busy pandering for votes from people who couldn't qualify for a home loan and berating the people warning them about the impending doom.  But, of course, the media was too busy oohing and awing over "the one" and slinging trash all over the airwaves to take their precious Despicocrats to task for their decisions.  And then all those people doing koolaid shots went to the polls because the media, Matt Damon, Oprah, and the rest of the ultra-liberal crowd told them to vote for Obi-One Messiah.  Bunch of lemmings.

Yea PURE coincidence that after a week of rallying the market dived on the same day Obama the messiah got elected, PURE coincidence that my employer (rich people) decided on that same glorious day of Obamas win, they lay off 600 people. The reason the market has been diving is for two months is because once Obama opened his can of worms confiscation of wealth plan, The rich have been taking the steps to protect their wealth from Obamnesia and ObidenHood.....the only bounce has been hope that McCain would win, and once Obama won the market dived 648 points on the GLORIOUS news of the messiahs coming.

Wake up people, NO party is completely guilt free in regards to this economic crisis.

There were two major contributing factors, the Community Reinvestment Act on the Democrat side of the aisle and the deregulation on the Republican side.  The solution caused by these factors happened under a Republican President and a Democratic Congress who approved the bailout paid for by you and me, the taxpayers!  The Dems didn't benefit, the Repubs didn't benefit, last time I checked 401ks plummeted regardless of your party affiliation, but the both parties helped the rich out big time!  They made money off of interests on bad loans and then when the companies tanked the taxpayer bailed them out.  It was a win win for them.  To blame the state of the economy on the President-elect is incorrect.

I love it, the market falls by roughly 6000 points and it's all Bush's fault but a 1500 point gain is just a "dead cat bounce" and the 500 point drop the day after an election is just coincidental? Get real.

Yes.  It is.  In economics a "dead cat bounce is a figurative term used by traders in the finance industry to describe a pattern wherein a spectacular decline in the price of a stock is immediately followed by a moderate and temporary rise before resuming its downward movement, with the connotation that the rise was not an indication of improving circumstances in the fundamentals of the stock. It is derived from the notion that "even a dead cat will bounce if it falls from a great height."

Also read my posts before replying, you're obviously missing the main point.

This country needed a clean sweep years ago, so here we go.

We all have a long haul ahead of us. I was a strong McCain supporter. Now that Obama is in, i will support him. He is (will be) our President. We need to respect the office. He is a smart guy. I may disagree on a few of his policies, but I will take him at face value and believe that he will listen to the opposition. He will have to if we are ever really going to get out of this.

I am also happy for the preceived change of oppinion on the international front. We needed it!!!

I see Obama will have his first Top Secret Presidential breif in the morning.  Funny, he can't even be arroved for a Secret clearance due to his past associations.  Oh well America, if you think he is out savior, your wrong.  He has made too many promises he can't keep.  Time will tell but I think he will fail and blame to Republicans for that too.

Can't blame the republicans any more. The beautiful thing is that the democrats have had the senate and the house for two years now. Now that they have the white house, there is no place left to hide behind. The either fix it, or take ALL the blame. Doesn't matter what happend before Obama takes office. That is just an excuse... fair play, same rules apply to Obama...

You are a rascist bigot. If you would have any intelligence at all, you would realize that both McCain and Obama had to get security clearance months ago for themselves and those they would be bringing into the White House during the first couple of months of establishing themselves. The government does this for each election to ensure there is no delay in their being able to began being briefed right away. Oh, by the way.... briefing means that they will be sitting him down and educating him on the high level information which he was not privy to until he became the President Elect.

It is embarrassing to me as an a proud American, to hear the negative comments being spewed by both McCain and Obama supporters. Both of these men are respectable people who have a profound love of this country and although they have displayed it in different areas, have displayed it none-the-less. They both have dedicated their lives to the area of public service. Obama turned down offers of high paying jobs when he graduated top of his class at Harvard to work making lives better in rough neighborhoods in Chicago making a fraction of what he could of earned. McCain, as we all know, served honorably in the military and made great personal sacrifice in the process.

It is okay to disagree with a persons policies and politics but keep in mind that both of these men want the same thing for all of us.... peace and prosperity even if they had different ideas on how to accomplish it. What exactly makes all of you so special that you can attack a person's character just because they may view things differently then you.

Here it is! Not even 24 hours after the election and we already have a winner! Anyone who criticizes Obama in any way will be forced to wear the "racist" label around their neck. Wow! It's great to be free.

barry obama cannot make anyone buy a car or a house if they don't have the money.  He is going to do exactly what anyone else would do when it comes to the economy, nothing.  It is going to take too long to rectify the situation and he promised way too many people way too many things and this will make it impossible for him to fix the economy without raising taxes.  God Bless America!  His first bill to sign will be the choice bill.  you know the one where you can abort a baby by sticking scissors in its head!  says alot about a person who can feel this is necessary or moral.

Screw the industries (housing, energy and auto makers)! Who is lobbying for the American people?? I don't think another stimulus check is necessarily the answer, but I don't think they should hand any more money to the corporations either.

I think they are all terrorists trying to destroy our country. Quick close the borders. Load your guns. And shoot anybody who looks stupid. LOL!!!! Oh wait, that might not work either. We're screwed.

Not claiming to be an economist, thanks smart a$$. Just calling it how I see it. Hand money to the corporations like AIG so the employees can be treated to spa treatments? No thanks. It is time the government took care of the people who bust their backs day in and day out and make this country work.

Read the Constitution, Erica, there is nothing there that says the government is to take care of the people!  The government is supposed to protect us and regulate trade.  There is also nothing in there about killing babies or health care.  It only 'guarantees' the Pursuit of happiness... it does not guarantee an equal outcome.  As a citizen you have the right to enter the race but you have to actually run if you want to have a chance to win.

It's not unusual for a president-elect to start choosing a cabinet and looking at the issues facing him.  We face huge challenges and I'm glad our new President-elect Obama is already analyzing what needs to be done.

Uh...his name is spelled Reagan I think. And he was an actor. NObama is not an actor, but he is acting. He is a poser. And now he poses as President. Greatest President of our time....hmmmm...no don;t think so. Nor is he one of my heroes. John McCain would qualify, or General Petraeus would qualify, or any member of the military would qualify as my hero. But not a Reagan. Now lets get back to bombing to the terrorists and any country harboring them. Prepeare the Nukes for deployment. Wow. 4 years of his nonsense. We're screwed. Here is our futrue under NObama:

Perhaps the U.S. should pull out of Chicago ?

Body count: In the last six months: 292 killed (murdered) in Chicago ; 221 killed in Iraq .

                                                      Chicago.... Who Runs it:

                                                      Daley)

.....our leadership in Illinois .....all Democrats.

Thank you for the combat zone in Chicago . Of course, they're all blaming each other!

                                                      Can't blame Republicans; they're aren't any!

-State pension fund $44 Bill ion in debt, worst in country. -Cook County ( Chicago ) sales tax 10.25% highest in country. (Look it up if you want). - Chicago school system rated one of the worst in the country.

This is the political culture that Obama comes from in Illinois .

First of all he is going to be too busy dealing with the threats from Russia's president today(not that any of our news services bothered to mentioned it).  Then he can start dealing with all the illegals who are on our welfare roles.  And, then he can give back to the government any money he got from those people on welfare who donated to his campaign.  Obviously, they didn't really need the money.

"Obama to make early mark on economy"  ???? Yea, a SKIDMARK is what he'll leave. LOL

Thanks to all our soooo liberally based news media, all we ever heard about Obama was good. Most we ever heard about McCain was bad. If the general population only heard this, then OF COURSE they will vote for the person who is made to look like the good guy. Most people are too busy, and have no time to look into each canidate and see what EXACTLY will that person do in his/her presidency.

And so now, the hard-working will be punished, and the lazy will rewarded. What a wonderful idea! Mediocracy, ftw!!!!

(**totally, am a sarcastic kind of person, btw..)

Reading resumes from college grads can be quite entertaining, if a person has enough time.  I would be embarrassed to write some of the stuff on here that they write in their resume!  Many college grads are nothing more than 'educated idiots' with most of them thinking they should be the head of the company after their first week on the job!

Most, if not all, college grads have no clue on how the real world works.  Thats why they vote for peace and love.   Wait 10 years and most of them are republican because they have 6 figure incomes and are sick of paying for the policies they voted in they were college grads.

Obama gets elected and the Stock market takes a dive!! after being on its way up. This is just a foreboding sign of things to come under National Federal Socialism. Same type of government Hitler used to prop up the German economy before it all came crashing down. I thought I heard that his election to President would calm the markets. Some calming effect huh? Oh! by the way..I'm a USW Union member and today the RICH company I work for that pays me $25.00 an hr or over $30 if you count the benefits, well they reacted to the news of Obama being elected and promptly will layoff over 600 people. This is no coincidence, they are preparing for the TAXATION or Confiscation and redistribution of their wealth with those who don't or won't work for a living . The National Federal Socialist taxation results will roll down hill to protect their bottom line and CEO Bonuses. I had no problem with their bonuses so long as I make a decent living with nearly perfect healthcare and bennies, but now Obama is going to destroy any real paying jobs by playing ObamaHood. Stock market dives and 600 laid off all on the same day he was elected.....he is working real hard alright, but socialism never works and neither does redistribution of wealth. Now some of my co-workers who voted fro him are out on the street and I'm not. Lets see how they like long unemployement lines and free government cheese over a decent Union salary.

Wonder how Obamanationis going to repay all those lobbyists who contibuted to his campaign.

It just amazes me that not one of the major news organizations have mentioned anything about the threat Russia's president made this morning.  The canadian papers reported it.  Their comment was that the U. S. was too busy celebrating Obama's win to notice.  Well, not all of us are celebrating and some of us are very fearful because of his inexperience.   I did not vote for Bush and I did not vote for Obama.  Bush scared the hell out of me because I thought he would get us into a war with Iraq which he did.  And, Obama scares the hell out of me because he doesn't have any idea what to do with a threat from a foreign government.  Same diff.

Oh wait a minute - is this the terrible disaster that Joe Biden was saying that is going to happen 6 months after Obama is elected President.

But its ok now...the Dems have nobody to blame or kick around after Bush leaves office. Only themselves!!!

REview the voting count on that. Many more democrats than republicans voted for. Bush presented bill but his original bill was only 3 pages and unbelievably after all the "earmarks" were added, it was over 400 (FOUR HUNDRED) pages.

They hate big oil profits which by the way pail in comparision to the taxation Uncle Sam takes from us. Thats right compare the percentage of profit big oil made and the percentage of taxes you pay due to government taxation, no wonder Obama blames Big Oil and the rich..he needs to steer you away from the thought of the real culprit...BIG GOVERNMENT and the 16th Amendment to the US Constitution.

If I made my son's money and had to give half of it to the government, I would be livid.  Or, why should a person like Warren Buffet be able to not pay his fair share?  Warren Buffet likes to brag that he makes more than most people but pays less in taxes than his secretary.  Why doesn't he share his secret of how to do that with the rest of us so we also can pay the government less?

You pay over half of your income a year in taxes. That makes the King of England and the Boston Tea party seem like nothing at all now doesn't it. Our founding fathers woudl roll over in their graves if they saw the 16th Amendment. They would also ask "What are you doing to your bill of rights" The corner stone of all our other rights is the first one..."The right of the people to petition the government fro a redress of their grievances" Recently when the US Supreme court was ask to rule on this very basic and corner stone right by the "WE THE PEOPLE FOUNDATION" they ignored it. Can you imagine what that means....your cornerstone right was never address meaning all other assaults on our rights cannot be stopped either since the Supreme court now protects the tyrant Government and ignores even a simple answer for Liberty and Justice. We are in deep trouble folks and only a ttrue American Revolution will fix it. I don't think it will happen in my lifetime and Obama will usurp the law just as all other politicians before him have.

I doubt all of those in the housing crisis are "all" part of the bad loans group. Look at how many people have lost their jobs just in the last few months. And with no job, no money for morgages, no money for cars, etc.  Theres several things that have to be targeted. Not just the wallstreet end. And if they do decide to so some second stimulus, they could just take some of the funding for it out of the 700+billion dollar bailout thats already been approved. That way no one would have to worry about that raising the federal deficite.
