Worsening slide challenges Obama

advertisement

Friday's dismal employment report underscores the urgent need for President-elect Barack Obama to act quickly to get the economy back on track. But as the devastating economic downturn gains momentum and spreads around the globe, there is a growing concern that any actions under the new administration will have little impact in the short term.

Voters made clear they want the new Congress and the Obama administration to make the economy a top priority. More than six in 10 voters surveyed in exit polls cited the economy as the most pressing issue facing the nation, and nine of 10 said the economy is in bad shape. The other four major issues cited as most pressing — Iraq, energy, terrorism and health care — were picked by one in 10 or fewer.

The latest evidence of the downturn's severity came Friday, when the government reported the nation's employers slashed another 240,000 jobs in October, pushing the unemployment rate to a 14-year high of 6.5 percent. The economy has shed about 1 million jobs so far this year in a downturn that appears likely to be the worst recession in decades.

Obama met with economic advisers Friday amid widespread calls for fresh steps to halt the economy’s rapid deterioration and begin to turn things around. There’s no shortage of ideas: tax breaks for businesses, massive spending on roads and other infrastructure projects, government support for the ailing auto industry, tax credits for new home buyers and aggressive government intervention to backstop failing mortgages, among others.

But it will take time for any of these measures to begin to have an effect. And in the meantime, the latest economic data suggest that things are getting worse.

Consumers — who account for two-thirds of U.S. economic activity — have pulled back sharply in just the past few weeks, as job losses and the turmoil in financial markets have left them spooked. On Thursday, retailers reported steep drops in October sales. Carmakers also saw sales plunge last month, with General Motors posting a 45 percent drop, and Ford and Chrysler reporting comparable pullbacks.

Government support may help the Big Three survive the storm, but there is little government can do to stop it in the coming months.

Dealers face several major problems selling cars. The worsening job market has potential car buyers putting off a purchase until things get better. The panic in the markets that began in September has only made matters worse. Those few customers who are stepping up to buy are having a much harder time getting financing from lenders who have sharply tightened their underwriting standards.

The result, according to AutoNation CEO Michael Jackson, is a downturn beyond the auto dealership chain’s “worst-case scenario.”

“At least we had planned for worst case and were operating for worst case,” he said. “But clearly, we're past that now. The financial panic that has occurred deep into the down cycle for housing and automotive is past worst case.”

The slump has spread well beyond the battered auto and housing industries to the wider economy, sending the gross domestic product into reverse in the third quarter and signaling that a recession is likely under way.

Initially concentrated among the battered housing and construction industries, job cuts have now spread to most sectors, from retailing to professional services. About the only sectors showing growth are health care and government. With dozens of states aggressively slashing budgets to fill gaping deficits, government job losses are expected to increase.

Obama’s economic policies likely will have even less impact on the widening global slowdown. Over the long term, efforts to expand trade and coordinate oversight of global financial markets may have a positive impact. But the short-term global outlook is “dismal,” according to Howard Archer, chief European economist for IHS Global Insight.

“It is apparent that the heightened financial crisis is having a serious dampening impact on already struggling Eurozone economies and is significantly intensifying the danger of deep, extended recession,” he wrote in a recent note to clients.

Even the perennially vibrant Chinese economy is feeling the effects of the global downturn. Economists at Credit Suisse are forecasting that China’s GDP growth could be as low as 5.8 percent in the fourth quarter of this year, down from 11.4 percent in 2007.

That global slowdown could feed on itself as lower consumer demand crimps trade flows between countries. The Credit Suisse economists note that when one country is in recession, imports typically fall as consumers cut back, but exports hold steady as demand remains strong in overseas markets.

But with most economies slowing around the world and the dollar rising, demand for U.S. exports is expected to fall. That could bring yet more U.S. layoffs.

Remember what happened after Goldwater passed the Civil Rights Act and people did not see immediate change?

Well it took Bush 8 years to completely screw up everything to historical proportions - and it took Clinton a least 2 -3 years to overcome the mess Old Man Bush left him - I don't expect results for about 4 years. Sure we will see little upticks - but this meltdown has affected nations all over the world and we can't solve all those problems from the White House. Besides Obama can't do anything with out the backing of the house and senate. About the only good thing is after 6 years of overpriced gas under Bush - we are now seeing it drop at the pumps - so much for the excuses about China and India causing high gas prices. The lower gas prices will slow inflation and possibly help the car industry - assuming we can get the credit industry to loan out some money. The housing industry - I am sorry but I think it will be stuck in the hole for a long time - people won't make a move until prices catch up to what they owe - again assuming interest remains low - it if goes up like it did in the Regan years - (14%) forget it - even 9% will kill any recovery. I think the big thing will be retaining jobs and getting people employed and making people feel safe in their employment - like the 90's - then you will see the start to spend money again. As far as Wall street - there are greedy pigs - look how they are churning these stocks from day to day now - just so they make $$ on the way up and way down! JOBS JOBS JOBS

Interesting point. The Stock Market typically drops by about 5% immediately after a Democrat is elected President, while it typically increases about 1% immediately after a Republican is elected. Looks like the trend is holding true so far. Wonder why? Probably because Democrats are viewed as anti-business (which also means anti-job creation).

There's an old saying "If you want to discourage something, tax it, and if you want to encourage something, subsidize it"

It should be interesting to see what gets taxed and what gets subsidized. I suspect business (and job creation) will get taxed, and welfare will be subsidized. I hope I'm wrong, but nothing about Obama's record or rhetoric has convinced me otherwise. Oh well, it's certainly "Change we can believe in".

interesting...

after the crash of '29, the economy languished with double digit unemployment.  as 1931 rolled around, and the unemployment numbers were starting to ease ever so slightly, hoover did what any good republican president does to get out of a depression.

he raised taxes on the top 10% of income earners, dramatically ramped up government spending...and sent the economy into a worse tailspin than the crash of '29 created.

sound familiar?

whispurr...name exactly what was done wrong the past 8 years, outside of the iraq war (which has no bearing on the financial meltdown that occurred this summer).

Obama has made more promises to the nation, than Georgia has peaches. Everyone tried to tell his supporters, Obama wasn't qualified and there was no way he could pull off half of what he was promising without seriously increasing the national debt, increasing taxes or jeapordizing jobs due to payroll tax increases.

Everyone hates the last eight years of the Bush Administration and the national debt at what, 480 Billion. However, Obama has already released through news reports that his programs are going to increase the national debt to well over 1 Trillion Dollars. In essence, by the end of Obama's first term the national debt increase is going to make the Bush Administration look like a walk in the park.

Mark this day, when it comes time for re-election. People aren't going to take Obama's promises and excuses again. Nor, with the inexcusable increase of the national debt, will anyone listen to "I couldn't accomplish much, because of the last eight years of the Bush Administion" by Obama.  In many ways, he actually has already buried himself. Obama has made so many different "Change to Believe In" promises, anything short of what he has been promising will make him look like a "smoke and mirror show"; all shine no substance.

If Barack Obama doesn't make good on his promises, this historic victory will go down as the biggest defeat in history come 2012. And, his "Youth" vote, "Hispanic" vote or "Black" vote won't stop the reckoning in store from GOP, Independent, Libertarian, Green Peace, suburban over 40, Middle America, the Military Vote, or Senior Vote banding together. He may have fooled them once, but, if he doesn't pull off his promises, he won't fool them twice.....

Whoops. You are right - It has been a 10% drop since Obama's election. It's been 5% per DAY since the election. It will probably get worse when people start taking losses this year so they can offset the higher taxes Obama promises in 2009. Oh well, like I said, it's "change we can believe in".

AC, spoken like a true idiot!  No matter where you live now it's tough and if you think like the person that wrote this ariticle (another idiot) that Obama is going to come in and clean up what the person you obviously voted for the last eight years in a short time then you and the writer need to stop smoking crack and drinking.  Intelligent people know without an article like this that it will take at least two terms and everyone working together to fix the mess Bush Jr is leaving behind.  They need to forfeit the pay he will receive from the government the rest of his life.  He should have to pay the rest of his life for the crap he's put us in and now leaving to forget about it and go back to snorting coke and smoking weed in Texas.  Enough of my sarcasm because all you people that get on here to release your racist anger because the better person for the position won is really pathetic.  It's going to take everyone and the country sticking together and give Obama a chance.  I mean you stood behind Bush for all the crap he did and probably didn't complain and will say he was a great President.  And ForTheBreakUp the reason for the drops is because scared people are making dumb decisions before Obama has even stepped into the White House and you're blaming him for that.  You, AC and the writer of this article must hang out at the same bar.

Barney Franks was to busy pulling a Lewinsky on his buddy in Freddie at the time, this should have been brought to the ethics board and immediately investigated.  But like true to party form they protect thier own.  It's disgusting and Franks should be investigated.

Wait a minute folks...Obama was just elected two days ago...he won't get sworn in for 2 1/2 months.  Let's see just how far down this economy slips before he even starts.  Let's take a look at the real numbers that he inherits from Bush (unemployment, inflation, foreclosures, stock market, war costs, school underachievement, etc.).  Talk about one hell of a mess he has to deal with.  That's Bush's mess.  Sure can't blame Clinton for that.  He left the country with an annual budget surplus and a growing middle class, with HIGHER taxes on the wealthy, who sure didn't seem to being doing too bad...they never do.  Bush destroyed all the gains made by the middle class in the 90's the past eight years...and then some.

Obama will do the best he can for the "average Joe"... I don't know anyone who thinks he will be able to fix the economic destruction America has experienced the past eight years, overnight.  If you voted for Bush twice then you screwed up!  Let's wait eight years before we start passing judgment on Obama.  FDR didn't turn around the mess of Harding and Hoover (both Republicans) overnight.

funny posts tonight. Bush was president for 8 years, and 6 of them the republicans controlled everything. But when the economy had a downturn during Bush's term no WAY could it ever POSSIBLY be his fault. Hmmm. But Obama has been president-elect, with absolutely no power at this point, for like about 5 minutes, and you already blame him for what the stock market did today? Is that a joke or ignorance or just plain sore loser bs?

And then if anything at all goes well in the first year, suddenly it'll be because Bush did something in 2001 which caused it, right? lol

You have severe brain damage. Call your precious BO and have him lay hands on you and the economy and fix everything like he promised you “guppies”……..Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha !

      (JC)

Hello Mr Cry, took me a while to figure out your last name. I know what the J stands for because you are making the sound of a braying jackass ... "aha, aha, a ha ha ha ha!"

Mr Please, you are right of course. We call it increased spending but it is not. We have to get it through our skulls that the world economy overheated and now it has to cool down for the next decade or so.

Our only hope is a new war or a new technology. The one, war, will make people almost literally bit the bullet(s) and adjust to a lower quality of life, still materially better than 1950 for most of us, especially minorities. The other, technology, will translate into a higher quality of life because as a good it will add value to the economy which we will experience in terms of increased production and therefore jobs and increased wealth. We have to contain the war mongers and encourage the technologists.

But that's for the long term. What we are already experiencing in the short term is the inflation caused by the war spending,  the whole body of the economy is sick, the housing market is the blister that burst, but the infection is actually deep in the system. Of course the people who are screwing up are the first to come up short, but although we have to deal with them to keep the system stabilized, dealing with them is not the cure.

We have to accept the inflation, and accept the fact that it is bitter medicine but it is the means by which we will all be reducing our lifestyles to face reality. We cannot accept the economic anarchists who say let the big institutions collapse and maybe we can construct something new out of the ashes. That's stupid! These people are the economic equivalent of the criminals who love to see a breakdown in civil controls so that they can go about raping and pillaging to their hearts content. That's a regressive move.

Unfortunately for us, inflation is the only means outside of taxation that the government has, through their manipulation of the monetary system, to distribute the cost of their corrective measures throughout the nation.  For the sake of civil order and the alleviation of suffering the other palliative measures being derided by JC need to be put in place or its back to the soup kitchens and the flop houses.

Very interesting post Dan. In the world of adults, however when a person makes a claim, they normally back it up with facts. At what point did Obama say he was handing out "free money"? Is your hearing aid working properly?

The fact is that Obama is NOT the president at this point. He has been the president-elect for about 50 hours. If you love America, you'll respect the office and give the man a chance.

Is it me or is Obama already aging?  Just seems to have aged.  I don't feel sorry for him.  This is what he wanted.  He has one he(( of a job in front of him.  Even though I dind't vote for him, we need to rally behind him and get this country moving again.  This is going to be a very bad recession. I still don't understand why Congress isn't in session to address the issues that they need to address.  But then again, this is Congress and they don't do a whole lot anyhow.  If you really want change, I say we should vote out Congress altogether.  They have been absent beyond belief.  And we pay them for this?

Excellent points, all the comments about past Presidents also include the Congressional party structure as to how things get done and, like it or not, this downturn has a lot to do with the Democratic Congress over the last two years or so. I guess if we all run out of money so do they...........

Obama, McCain, and Hillary ran for POTUS while still holding their Senate seats (and drawing their Senate paychecks).  Either they weren't doing their jobs, or Senators don't do squat.  Which is it?

Plain old Joe, exactly!  Anyone running for office should not hold office.  Either they aren't doing their job or their job is not needed!

I don't understand the democrats wanting everyone to 'give Obama a chance, he's not even in office yet'!  If anyone would turn their memories on they would recall that the democrats were attacking Bush visciously before he took office... and have continued daily ever since.  Obama will only succeed in that the media will praise him for breathing well... just as they praised slick willie for lying so well.

Very good observation, because it says something about these people.

If you recall the last few elections, only one person gave up his senate seat when running for a higher office.  That was John Edwards.  Too bad for us he was railroaded by the DNC, I think he was more "electable" than the others who ran in the last 10 or so years.  By the way, don't overlook that Palin didn't give up her position either.  You don't want to her to feel ignored!

I guess they all figure they will keep their 'day job'.  We did not have a fair game to see this time, because both the guys kept their day jobs!

Excellent points, Maryland, but in order for Congress to change, we as a citizenry need to change the way we think.  Voting for the little selfish things, like a bailout or spreading the wealth, we only make our shackles of bondage stronger.   No one learns when their problems are fixed for them.  It's sad that the people who have the most control of the financial markets in this country are appointed, not elected.  I'm talking about the Federal Reserve.  But, in all honesty, we have done this to ourselves, and our current level of thinking will not solve the massive problems that lie before us.  Change will be swift, and sweeping.  Hold on to your knickers.  This is going to be one scary ride.

Here here Jan!  I hope all Republicans come together and follow the example of bi-partisanship set by the democrats the last eight years.  I just wonder where we will find enough unemployed, pot-smoking republicans to shout down Obama at nearly every speach and to block roads and bridges (to hold tax paying Americans from getting to their JOBS) in protest to his every policy.  I eagerly look forward to continuing this grand level of civility.

Plain Old Joe: I'll take "not doing their jobs" for 100 dollars, please.

Seriously, tho, there's no single reason the markets have been down the last few days. Some pretty  negative reports are coming out of the business sector, esp. about jobs.

And no one can "fix" the economy. What a dumb headline. However, government can take action that alleviates a naturally occurring event. And government can take action that makes naturally occurring events much worse.

It's usually better if government just stays out of the way (note I said USUALLY not always).

Very weird post. Have you perused the Constitution at any point in your rantings? The Congress cannot remain in session every minute of every day, and you can't "get rid" of the first branch of government without having a revolution. Are you suggesting we have a country with no representatives of the people? I know you went to school, now, come on ... what do we call a country without elected representatives of the people? Come on, little Maryland Republican, come on. Yesss, thaat's right; it's called dictatorship or anarchy. Verrry Good! Now what do we call AMERICA'S form of government. Yeasssssss. Democratic republic. .... good ... School's out, neocons! Learn to love America and learn about it!

Fiore- you actually think that Congress does its job? It was our elected officials who passed NAFTA (4,000 factories closed its doors within the first 6 months), passed the Patriot Act, passed the bailout (70% of the people were against it), passed the NAU (North American Union), etc! And about 50% who voted yes on these bills admitted to NEVER READING THE DAMN piece of legislation. If you ask me, the American people should file a class-action lawsuit against the government for NOT doing their damn jobs.

Here is a question for you Fiore: Why does Congress allow a private cabal (the Federal Reserve) print, create, and control our monetary policy? The Fed charges the government interest for this service and therefore the government taxes the American people through higher taxes and inflation. The government (has constitutional right) could control our monetary policy and NOT CHARGE ANY INTEREST and therefore cost the tax payer nothing!! Why do you think that is? Hmmmmm......funny isn't it? Congress has the right to abolish the Fed but does not, and therefore allows the Private Banks to fleece us and control us with debt! Wake up!!

Some of you people crack me up.  You are blogging on here as if it is already Obama's job to turn the entire country around and give you everything he promised on a silver platter.  NEWS FLASH!!!  He has not even taken his oath yet; therefore, he is not the President yet.  Bush is.  Do not cut his legs out from under him before he even gets them on the ground - that is, unless you just like to complain because it feels good when your lips flap.  It honestly doesn't matter whether you voted for him or not - what matters is that whether you like it or not is he is the President Elect and will be your President for the next 4 years at a minimum.  Support him rather than bash him.  This country has had enough bashing and I personally have heard enough of it to last me a lifetime.  I am glad he is doing his research and studying the issues at hand in order to get his priorities straight once he does take office.  A lot of you have unreasonable expectations.  We didn't get into this mess overnight and it isn't going to happen overnight.  It will be a very long, rough road.  Rather than whining and complaining, do your part in making a positive change.  :)

Bush 2000 - 2008 $10 trillion - he doubled it in 8 years! $400 billion surplus to $500 billion debt. Loss of jobs, high gas prices, loss of the housing industry, construction industry destroyed, automotive industry almost bankrupt, 2 endless wars costing billions a month. Now this is what the Republicans did - and you are worried about Obama? Did you worry when you elected that Moron Bush into office? Gee - hard to accept blame for screwing up just about everything?

Hey GOP Rules Obama is NOT raising your taxes, he is giving us the bill for the money that the GOP has already spent or stolen.

No one with a brain thinks that the problems will be solved in one, two or four years it took us 8 years to get into this mess it will take a long time to get out, but we can see light at the end of the tunnel, now.

                                jc,

the financial meltdown of this past summer, and attendant ripple effect through industries associated with the housing, have their origins in the 1977 CRA and 1993 NHIO.  both have to do with "encouraging" federally chartered banks to write mortgages to people without regard to credit history (that's racist) and using food stamps and welfare as mortgage application income sources. five times the gop - and bush - attempted to extend further oversight to fannie and freddie. they were rebuffed by dodd/frank/pelosi all 5 times.

aside from the mortgage meltdown, leading economic indicators used by business leaders (WSJ, Investors Business Daily, etc) were still rising, or at worst, flat as of september into early october.  this would be factory usage, natl association of purchasing mgrs index (tells what will happen 6-24 months from now), machinery orders, construction backlog (of residential, commercial, industrial bldgs), among others.  business leaders do not pay one iota to what the gov't calls leading economic indicators. as i said, those publications showed all those indices still rising, or flat, as of september/october.  no decreases.

tell me this is not a media driven recession.

It is NOT a media driven recession, gee how much power do you think that the media has?

The media reports and some (FOX) distorts the news, they DON'T make policy.

                                3sheets, bilbo...

as stated, if all the economic indicators used by business leaders were rising (or flat) into october, what caused the change?  the credit crunch was already months old and should have sent every one of the indicators i mentioned into decline. but it didn't. so what caused the sudden slowdown?

look at when nbc, abc, cbs, nyt, wp, msnbc etc started saying how bad the economy was.  tell me it's not a media driven recession; decision makers in industry will tell you that. tell me that you know more than them...please do.

get off the fox kick...several european and asian news agencies looked at these claims (japan times, deutsches welles, RFI, AFP, Radio Prague among others)...and found little difference between fox and the others. what they did find was no agenda, and a willingness to present, or attempt to present, all sides of an issue. no wonder liberals hate them.

The media does not make policy the media sways public opinion by not reporting the news truthfully.  The media uses soundbites to get what it thinks it wants.

Its an easy fix actually, stop buying a newspaper save a tree.  Stop watching the news for that hour or two and longer for you news junkies and watch the ratings drop.  Spend time outdoors and get to know your neighbors or exercise at that time.  Social and health issues start to  disappear.

Lastly have enough common sense to beleive nothing you read (unless you were standing right there and reviewed completely the entire incident as it happened) kind of like Joe the plumber (sorry that was off the hook though) and believe only half of what you see on the news as anything can be made to seem what it is not.  Modern technology is wonderful isn't it?

Somewhere the media has to be held responsible for half truths.  I say hit them where it hurts ratings and money.  See if they get a moral responsibility to ethical journalism then.

SH-2000 - you are absolutely right about California Arnold.  He has raised taxes way too much.  I don't agree with Republicans or Democrats raising taxes.

As for the rest in here that commented on Bush's mess, I really feel sorry for you if you truly believe Bush single-handedly made this mess.  It took losers from both sides to do this kind of destruction.  I do know from basic math I was taught in first and second grade, though, that less profit by the major money players (corporations, so-called businesses not qualified as small because they make a whopping $250k a year) will absolutely mean less jobs.  Less jobs will obviously mean less money in the economy which will lead to less items being bought and sold.  It's a very simple plan for disaster.

I know it sounds logical to "punish those rich guys" but working for those "rich guys" are how the vast majority of us make our livings.

Please try to think outside of the mainstream media.  It is very one-sided.  Go back to knowledge that was literally learned in elementary and you will see that mathematically Obama's plan can't possibly work.  By the way, in fairness McCain's plan was not much better.  I just wanted the lesser of the evils to win.

How true.  There has never been as big a two-day drop in the stock market in the two days following a presidential election in the history of our country.  That's all you need to know about the confidence people have in his ability to lead.  He is good looking and a great speaker, but he is in no way qualified to lead the country.  Maybe I should run for President in four years.  Why not?

You got that right.  The media will help Obama lower expectations on all of his messianic promises and start making excuses from the get-go!

The best part about being a conservative now is the fact the Democrats cannot blame anyone else for their failures these next 4 years since they have all the power!  LOLOL!

And for those of you who have short-term memory loss issues, we did not get into this economic crisis in 8 years.  It's only been within the last 2 when the Dems took over Congress.  LOLOL!

Let them run this show right into the ground while I sit back and laugh and laugh as I watch them scramble to find someone to blame.  HA!

Onward to victory in 2010 and 2012!

Of course you seemed to forget all the legislation that got VETO'd in that last 2 years.... plus of course the fact that this has been happening a lot longer than 2 years... plus the fact that you forgot to mention that the Republican side of congress decided to drag their feet because they were sore losers.

Funny that the conservatives won't wait until the Obama is actually in office and has selected his cabinet before they start chanting that Obama failed.  AMAZING!

Such a divided country we live in lately.

If this country is divided, it is 100% the fault of the liberal media who did everything in their power to tear down conservatives at every opportunity while turning their faces away from Democrats behavior and shady dealings.

They started this fire and they can put it out.  Good luck with that.

#1 T you are WRONG, I am white and Wiberta's words ring true.

#2 Lady Liberty, do conservatives every consider that maybe the media is "liberal", because that demographic is actually the largest and they can keep their ratings higher by attracting that audience. You see, my point? Certainly if there were more conservative Americans than liberal Americans  the media would be trying to capture that audience, and thus more revenue. We've been sold on this idea that  Americans are conservative and the media is liberal, but it's not true.  Supply and demand 101. The Obama landslide has proven that.

I'm sorry to inform you of this but the media is no longer in the business of reporting the news.

They create the news.  They twist and spin every story to make conservatives look bad and liberals look good.  They do this because they are owned and run by liberals for liberals in order to move their agenda forward.  Not because they represent the views of the majority of Americans.

In all honesty, the overwhelming vote against gay marriage in 3 states shows you that -  even in uberliberal California conservatism still lives in a big way.

                                          L. Liberty, Money talks as they say. No one is going to pander to an audience thats NOT there, they follow the customers. We have been fooled long enough, conservatism is FAR from the majority, as I said the election results are proof of that. As to gay marriage, I see you point BUT, I for example am a New York born and raised (uber)liberal and I voted AGAINST gay marriage, as did many other liberals I know. Sorry, gay friends reading this. I'm not proud of it, and I thought about it but I'm married and I guess that influenced my choice. Some of us  want to see civil unions extended to include other rights as in marriage, but want marriage to stay as a male/female solely. That is what you are not factoring in.  Liberal yes, but I guess not liberal enough to say marriage should be defined as the same for everyone. The political spectrum is a circle, so you can be on the left and certain issues can bring you to the right and vise versa, although the left is my comfort zone. : )

Uh, no Obama landslide. Maybe with the Electoral College votes, but not with the popular vote.

48 percent of voters voted for someone other than Obama.

I was part of that 48 percent.

I also know that markets go up and down for many reasons and the reasons for the current drop over the last 2 days probably have little to do with Obama winning, although that could be A reason.

I will wait and see what Obama does or doesn't do. Ditto with Congress.

I don't expect either to "fix" the economy. No one has that kind of power.

a difference of approx 6 million votes out of 130 million is about a 4% spread...which a mandate does not make.

if you listen to howard sterns interview with harlem residents, you know why most minorities voted for obambam.

I hope the people who voted for Obama read that.

I guess the media already knew that Obama exaggerated about his ability to fix the economy but hold off the article until after the election when nothing can be done.

                                          Such a "marvelous" tactics!

That's why I stop watching the network news and CNN because all are liars!

Obama of course wants the job. He only care about himself, not the people. If he cares about people, he would have tell the voters that he may not be able to fix the economy, healthcare, or foreign policy.

I did not vote for McCain. So I am not a Republican. But I am not a Democrat either.

I just heard that Reid is trying to kick Liberman out because Liberman supported McCain. What a revengeful guy!

Based on this fact, don't expect me to support the Dem! The Dem are no better than the Rep.

He made a mistake this time, now trying to beg his way back to the Dem.  Disgusting.

By the way, nothing was said stating Obama can't fix the economy. It says... nobody is expecting he would be able to fix the screw ups in the SHORT TERM.  Meaning, realistically, 3-6 years.

Of course not, Otherwise he will not likely to be elected.

Maybe he is campaigning for his second term? It must be!

Unbelievable, this guy has not even sworn in yet!

I guess he is smart enough to think about himself and use his supporters to achieve his goals.

I believe during all his speech's, during all the debates.. He made one consistent statement.

It wouldn't be easy, and it wouldn't be immediate.  But I guess you weren't looking for those statements to jump on and turn and twist.

Look at the Pelosi and Reid. What have they done for the country lately?

Like I said... its a good thing you posters are in the minority.

First.. Obama isn't a Messiah.. your words only to divide.

Secondly, you can't see past your conservative notions that nothing is your fault.

8 years of Bush... the last 2 years of VETO's and Filibusters....

I do hope Bush makes good on his promise to a smoothe transition.  We'll see.

The last thing Joe is doing is begging the Dems to come back.  They are trying very hard to win him back over, they need his vote are will give him what ever he wants.  Stay strong Joe, alot of filibusters coming, stay Independant, that is how you won your seat.  Make the Dems beg, they got what they want and already are showing there true colors with picking Clinton appointees....What a change

John, I'm not sure if you watched the election, but never once did Obama promise a quick fix to the economy. He said throughout the whole campaignthat fixing the state of our economy would take sacrifice from all Americans. He said during the debates, that the ecomony may not even be fixed completely after his first term. Our country is in the worst economic crisis since the great depression and you have to be diluted to think that ANYBODY would be able to fix it in 4 years. It took almost 30 years to create this mess in the first place. I wish that people would educate themselves before they decide to spew their toxic hate. View the debates again and them come back here honestly saying that Obama promised a quick economic fix...

What he promised was to lead with hope and not fear.

What he promised was to keep Americans informed.

What he promised was to surround himself with the greatest minds in the world, the people that can help this country rise again the greatness.

Hate to tell you guys - but we are going to be able to blame Bush and the crap that he and his people have done for a long long long time.  Look ...   LOOK at the national debt he GAVE US!!!

short-term, 3-6 years, one year, one term, whatever.

It's hysterical that so many of you (whether you support Obama or not) really believe he or anyone can "fix" the economy.

Certain policies can AFFECT what happens, but no one is in control.  Good thing too. The communists tried to do that-centrally plan the economy, in essence controlling the forces of supply and demand. It doesn't work.

I think Obama is the one who is hiring all the thugs.

Look at his choice of chief of staff.

He is not interested in bipartisan!

by the way, I am more disgusted by Pelosi and Reid, they have not kept their promises they made more than 2 years ago!! We are still in Iraq when they promised they would have the troops out in a year!

I am not a Republican. I would vote for Hilary in a heart beat if she was on the ballot!

So let me get this right...after 8 years of the most disrespectful treatment of ANY President in history, ~now~ the Democrats want to hold hands and sing "Kumbaya"?

Well, lemme tell ya.  I plan to give Pres-Elect Obama the same respect and consideration that he and his party gave President Bush for the last 8 years.  HAHAHAHA!!!

And I will be calling my representatives to be sure they know good and well that there should be no more reaching across the aisle since all you get is a bitten hand.  Let the liberals reach over to US for a change and see how they like having their agendas purposefully derailed so that we can blame them for the failures.  :-)

Why Pelosi and Reid have to be kept at Bay? Are they both Obama's supporters?

Did they vote for Obama or not?

He is their Commander in Chief. Are they supposed to listen to Obama and follow his lead?

I guess not based on what you said!

Hmm, there is already a rift in the Dem party. Interesting!

                                                        More drama to watch!

Can't wait to see how this is going to play out!

Democrat or Republican... doesn't matter.  They all have agendas.  They all want their piece of pie.  Now, a strong Chief of Staff that will sift through these agendas in order to keep the president focused on real issues... so not to be bombarded by them.

It would happen the same way if the Republicans had full control... I guarantee it.

It would take them 3-6 years to be detoxified and realize what they have done!

America is way too divided with all the hate from conservatives.

Mark, c'mon, where have you been?  The dems have been hating non-stop for the last eight years.  The pubs are just saying "You want the hate to stop?  You first!"...next time they have the white house.  If dems wanted a truce, they should have called for it when the shoe was on the other foot.  I'm afraid you're a little late.

Mark - "America is way too divided with all the hate from conservatives..."

ROFLMAO!! ...oh now that's a good one. Tell you what, create another screen name and just post a few little things, just oh, "good one"  but say you are a conservative Christian.... Take a walk on the wild side ;) See how much "love" and "acceptance"  you get from the left.... try for ..oh a week. Travel all over, not just here. When you get "Christians should have their homes burned down" or their "children taken a way because they are being brainwashed"..... stuff like that.... yeah. Real lovey dovey.

                                                        Yeah, only "conservatives"  "hate"...

Hey Lady Liberty, Let's not make a ridiculous generalization. Bush got the treatment he deserved. When 9/11 happened I felt for Bush... No other President had to endure an attack on our country of that magnitude.  BUT that respect changed when he LIED to the American people and lead this country with one of the most CORRUPT administrations in American history rivaling that of Nixon. We were lead into a war with a country under FALSE pretense, we were lied to. Our national debt almost tripled in his 8 years in office... THAT is supposed to command respect??

AND NADASHEEP, if it looks like a sheep, talks like a sheep, and smells like a sheep...

Then it's a sheep, go ahead - herd behind Rupert Murdoch and his cronies... baaaahhh

(who BTW - trashed the GOP running mate royally LMAO)

I'm sorry, my standards are a little higher than that...

emanuel is a known attack dog; both parties use them.  he's known for playing hardball, being vindictive - ask the conservative dems elected in 2006 what happened, and being a bully-ask the conservative dems elected in 2006 about his temperment.

neither emanuel nor obama has ever reached across the aisle to work with other party. if you look at all the legislation sponsored during their tenure in office, you will not find their name on anything that has one gop sponsor. not one.

But as a member of the minority party, Obama also worked across the aisle with Republicans to push several measures that became law in 2006.

Working with Republican Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, Obama won enactment of a law creating a single, searchable database of all federal contracts, grants and loans.

He also partnered with senior Indiana Republican Sen. Richard Lugar, the former chairman of the Foreign Relations panel, to sponsor legislation to strengthen international efforts to destroy conventional weapons, though it did not advance out of committee.

Were the burning of his effigies, the calls for his assination, the derogatory propaganda movies,  and the all the other insults the Obots way of showing respect and love for the president?

worse, when howard presented obama's platform positions, they agreed with it 100%. problem is, when howard presented obama's platform positions, he gave them john mccain's positions. he reversed it with mccain being presented with obama's positions, and they nixed mccain 100%--who was presented as having the position of their preferred candidate.  of course when howard aired it, sharpton screamed like a stuck pig.

                                                                      Yeah, I saw that video.

                                                                      bilbo, it's not a lie.

Now how that video can be interpreted is an entirely different matter. I'm not sure I can post links (newsvine sometimes has rules about that). Here's one from youtube:

Here's some info if the link doesn't appear:

Peggy Joseph is the name of the lady who made the comment at an Obama rally. It was reported by a local NBC station (I know it's NBC because of the NBC Peacock in the corner)

Here is what she said (verbatim):

"I never thought that day would ever happen when I wouldn't have to worry about putting gas in my car, I won't have to worry about paying my mortgage, you know; if I help him, he's going to help me."

Some interpret this as the woman believes Obama will give her these things or give money to her for these things. The problem is that the video clip is so short (26 seconds) we don't have any idea if it includes everything she said. If not, then it could be the quote was taken out of context. If it is the whole quote, well we still don't know exactly what Ms Joseph meant. She never said Obama will give me these things, just that she won't have to worry about it. So what did she mean?

Edit: doesn't look like the newsvine will allow the link to appear. Honestly, if you can type a comment here you can google Peggy Joseph Obama rally.

Any thing not directly addressed in the US Constitution is expressly delegated to the states. California, Florida, and Arizona have used their authority legally to limit marriage to a man and a women. If you don't like it you are free to move to another state that allows gay marriage. You are not forced to live in any of those states.  Try the Peoples Republic of Massachusettes. I've heard they celebrate your marraiges there.

So he is a good looking man who can deliver a good speech, but is in no way qualified to lead the country.  I think I'll run for president in four years.  Why not?

Under this bill, a line would be added to the tax form 1040 which would easily allow you to add as much additional tax as you would like over the amount that has been computed. Furthermore, you can call for the money to be spent rather than just applied to pay down the deficit. Under this bill, all those people who want to see the Bush tax cuts repealed could easily pay that extra tax.

We should all start calling our reps insisting that Rep. Campbell's bill be brought to the floor AND passed by both houses. And signed into law. Who's with me?

Good point about fiscal and monetary policy. Those can certainly affect things, but no one is really in control (as in micromanaging). The Soviets and China tried that (India still tries it)--a centrally planned economy (micromanaging) with disastrous results.

I'm not so sure Obama thinks he can fix it. If he's so smart and educated then he knows he can't.

I think he just said all that stuff because he knows many people believe it (cause he's smart and tuned into people) really works that way. And he knows (cause he's so smart and tuned into people) that people will vote for the person who says it.

Don't forget he's smart. Harvard Law Review. Top of the class and all that. Can pronounce "nuclear" properly. And he ran a good campaign (look at how much he raised). And he talked to all the right people who know about economic stuff.

If he really DOES think he can, then he's an idiot despite his education and oratory skills. I guess in that case all the people voting for him ON THAT BASIS would also be idiots?

The man cannot accomplish everything in one day. Note, he just got elected, so Bush is still president until Obama gets inaugurated. And it will take a while for him to fix everything that Bush messed over the 8 years that he was president.  I mean its common sense. What do you want Obama to do , take out a magic wand and 'Poof' everything is fixed???

Kind of quiet now until something goes sour and he hires his army. All those promises that nobama sang about during the campaign and there were plenty, wonder if they will end up in the trash along with all those flags. Smoke and mirror tactics.

Remember this Bilbo congress's rating has been lower than Bush's (it's Democratic).  I don't care that Obama won.

I want a government that makes the right decisions and neither party have done that for a long time.  I have voted in the last 7 Presidential elections and have realized they are all in it for themselves.
