Worsening slide challenges Obama

Friday's dismal employment report underscores the urgent need for President-elect Barack Obama to act quickly to get the economy back on track. But as the devastating economic downturn gains momentum and spreads around the globe, there is a growing concern that any actions under the new administration will have little impact in the short term.

Voters made clear they want the new Congress and the Obama administration to make the economy a top priority. More than six in 10 voters surveyed in exit polls cited the economy as the most pressing issue facing the nation, and nine of 10 said the economy is in bad shape. The other four major issues cited as most pressing — Iraq, energy, terrorism and health care — were picked by one in 10 or fewer.

The latest evidence of the downturn's severity came Friday, when the government reported the nation's employers slashed another 240,000 jobs in October, pushing the unemployment rate to a 14-year high of 6.5 percent. The economy has shed about 1 million jobs so far this year in a downturn that appears likely to be the worst recession in decades.

Obama met with economic advisers Friday amid widespread calls for fresh steps to halt the economy’s rapid deterioration and begin to turn things around. There’s no shortage of ideas: tax breaks for businesses, massive spending on roads and other infrastructure projects, government support for the ailing auto industry, tax credits for new home buyers and aggressive government intervention to backstop failing mortgages, among others.

But it will take time for any of these measures to begin to have an effect. And in the meantime, the latest economic data suggest that things are getting worse.

Consumers — who account for two-thirds of U.S. economic activity — have pulled back sharply in just the past few weeks, as job losses and the turmoil in financial markets have left them spooked. On Thursday, retailers reported steep drops in October sales. Carmakers also saw sales plunge last month, with General Motors posting a 45 percent drop, and Ford and Chrysler reporting comparable pullbacks.

Government support may help the Big Three survive the storm, but there is little government can do to stop it in the coming months.

Dealers face several major problems selling cars. The worsening job market has potential car buyers putting off a purchase until things get better. The panic in the markets that began in September has only made matters worse. Those few customers who are stepping up to buy are having a much harder time getting financing from lenders who have sharply tightened their underwriting standards.

The result, according to AutoNation CEO Michael Jackson, is a downturn beyond the auto dealership chain’s “worst-case scenario.”

“At least we had planned for worst case and were operating for worst case,” he said. “But clearly, we're past that now. The financial panic that has occurred deep into the down cycle for housing and automotive is past worst case.”

The slump has spread well beyond the battered auto and housing industries to the wider economy, sending the gross domestic product into reverse in the third quarter and signaling that a recession is likely under way.

Initially concentrated among the battered housing and construction industries, job cuts have now spread to most sectors, from retailing to professional services. About the only sectors showing growth are health care and government. With dozens of states aggressively slashing budgets to fill gaping deficits, government job losses are expected to increase.

Obama’s economic policies likely will have even less impact on the widening global slowdown. Over the long term, efforts to expand trade and coordinate oversight of global financial markets may have a positive impact. But the short-term global outlook is “dismal,” according to Howard Archer, chief European economist for IHS Global Insight.

“It is apparent that the heightened financial crisis is having a serious dampening impact on already struggling Eurozone economies and is significantly intensifying the danger of deep, extended recession,” he wrote in a recent note to clients.

Even the perennially vibrant Chinese economy is feeling the effects of the global downturn. Economists at Credit Suisse are forecasting that China’s GDP growth could be as low as 5.8 percent in the fourth quarter of this year, down from 11.4 percent in 2007.

That global slowdown could feed on itself as lower consumer demand crimps trade flows between countries. The Credit Suisse economists note that when one country is in recession, imports typically fall as consumers cut back, but exports hold steady as demand remains strong in overseas markets.

But with most economies slowing around the world and the dollar rising, demand for U.S. exports is expected to fall. That could bring yet more U.S. layoffs.

It is not going to be the banks and CEO's that bled hundreds of billions off the tax payers with the Democrats blessings

No question the banks overextended lending to people who couldn't afford it.  Who bled hundreds of billion from the banks are the deadbeats who stopped paying mortgages.

Is anybody listening to this bafoon.  When he read from the script he said nothing except that there will be additional handouts.  Then the press conference starts and he can't muster an intelligent sentence.  All I heard was ah, and, oh....and this guy is a Harvard lawyer?  Can't you see him with foreign presidents....heaven forbid they ask him a tough question.  What an empty suit.  Also, did you note that as he spoke the market tanked as he spoke....gave up about 40% of its gain today in about 5 minutes....ah, what a leader.....empty suit.

I love the way commentators are so worried about whether Obama will be able to cope, after they sat at the feet of W for eight years like sick puppies while he wrecked the economy and America's reputation.  They don't know how to fix the economy.  They don't even know what the right questiions are.  Obama is headig in the right direction, away from non-regulated gambling.  Will it take time?  Yes, W and the greedy screw-ups on Wall Street have created a mess.  That was completely predictable and evolved over eight years.  The clowns are still trying to figure out what happened.  Obama has already figured out how to pull this country together.  He will figure out how to pull it out of this depression.  What we need from the array of clowns is support.  You can do it, you sucked up to Bush for eight miserable years, you can do it again for eight good years.

I didn't trust Bush from the word go.  I voted for Gore and had to vote for Kerry.  As I stated before Obama is too inexperienced and doesn't truly understand what he is talking about.  The last time the "People spoke" and voted for another completely inexperienced man was 2000.

I just hope history doesn't repeat itself.

When the Government of this country wakes up and tells the financial bankers to do as they are told NOTHING will change. The elected officials have the right to tell these Bankers you are not elected to run this country we the Government are. Regulate this industry not hand feed it, the only way to deal with wayward children is punish them for their greed. I trust banks and bankers  as much as I trust a man eating shark.

Listen to yourselves.  Is this the blog for bitter republicans.  You sound like the McCain advisors.  Always blame someone.  They lost so they blame Palin.  The ecomony sucks so lets tear apart Obama for what he has yet to do.  Why don't you just hope that this new President (regardless of party) can set us on a path which will renew this country on economics, health care and foreign policy.  Follow McCains lead and cross party lines.  We need to unite for the good of the cause.

Ya ll need to go out and buy "The Secret", ya can't rely on the government but you can rely on yourselves.  I know those kids in Washington won't be payin me jack for SS, and as such I'm not concerned about it, I'll handle that on my own.  Take care of yourselves and your families and certainly don't put too much faith in Washington, as far as I know the goin rate for a hammer on a government contract is still 27.95.  Shoot maybe Obama will send somebody to go get a home depot card instead, maybe save some of that green being wasted on those BS gov. jobs.  I mean let those aliens at area 51 go, I know it's costin big bling to feed em everyday, and the electric bill is staggering.  Shoot ya'll I'm in the sticks but I've got dial up...say it with me...."yes we can"

I think we all know that "yes, we can", meant we can lie our butts off to get elected. I think that someone should do a follow-up on Peggy. Record the look on her face when the first of the month comes and Obama did not pay her mortgage. She will be home because BO did not fill her tank either.

The people who voted for Obama will be feeling the largest case of Buyer's regret ever.

It is time for everyone who spends their time writing on blogs to use this time to write congress.  Send emails, send POSTCARDS.  Congress does not like POSTCARDS because everyone who touchs one especially one to congress will read it before passing it on.

Here is the one that I am sending:

                    Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Reid,

Public confidence and congress's approval rating will not improve until the public sees accountability from the democrat controlled congress in this financial meltdown.

We both know that if you could have hung this around the republican party's head, you would have already done so. THIS IS A DEMOCRAT PARTY MESS.  The fox in this case the democrats were not watching the henhouse door because they were being paid off with contributions and sweetheart loans to look the other way while mischief was being done.
We want the heads and careers of the democrats responsible for this financial meltdown.  We want the removal of Chris Dodd and Barnie Franks.  Moving these democrats to other committees so they can continue doing damage is not what we want.  Every time these democrats are seen they remind us of what damage the democrats have done to us.
The democrats were put back in to clean up their mess and make the responsible parties accountable.

WE WANT THE REMOVAL OF CHRIS DODD AND BARNIE FRANKS

And you won't be taken seriously because it is obvious you have no idea why we are having this crisis let alone who all was involved.   But good luck with that.

I am giving him a break as it is a lot to inherit, but he better do what he promised within his term.  IF he has a big grand gala inaguaration party and its at the tax payers expense, then we will know he is all about his legacy and forget those who put him there.  IF the party is paid for by donations then party on, if not then get a suit and dress off the racks like the rest of us hard working soon to be not so middle class.

All you guys who say that Bush is at fault for what is going on in all this financial mess need to pick up a book or surf alittle harder on the internet, the financial mess was caused by greedy corporations that got into the housing business and used the financial regulations that have been in place for decades to there greedy advantage (learn something). When Bush introduced the tax cuts in 2001 it stoped the little recession that was occurring. Tax cuts work!

The now president elect first came out bashing the tax cuts but know wants to keep half of the tax cuts in place.  Obama wants to Tax people who make 250,000 or is it 150,000 what every it is, make up about 46% of the top 1% top earners in America which are small business owners, here is a little secret, that is were most of the jobs are created if you start taking there money to give to other people then you give them no reason to work hard or even own a business, no small business no new jobs. We all are going to get tax he just hides it, example he wants to increase tax's on corporations, but what most people either don't know or are just straight stupid is that corporations don't pay taxes the consumer pays for them, you increase tax's the price on product's goes up do the math, in a economy when no one has money to spend already and things get more expensive nobody buys.

Nobody invest time into any kind of research on critical things like politics everybody takes everybody elses word for it and automaticly think it is good if this person said it is good. There was a record turn out of black voters and unfortunatly they voted for Obama because he is black lets face it this was there way on sticking it to the man. If you want to call it racist then call it racist, but we need to call it like it is.

Any sane or logical person CANNOT possibly expect Obama even in his first term as president to be able to fix 8 years of stupid and corrupt decisions!

According to Idiot Neo-Cons, Obama while campaigning painted himself as a Messiah who can fix everything, so what - like McCain didn't?  What a stupid comment by the Neo-Cons - ALL politicians campaigning sell themselves like they can fix everything.  Heck, even Palin tried selling herself as a fix-it-all person.

The Idiot Neo-Cons have been sleeping, especially for the past 8 years.  They need to do the human race a favor and go back to sleep.  They whine how Obama has no governing experience.  Bush had that experience which didn't mean a thing - look at the stupid and corrupt decisions he made.

Bush pulled the majority of our troops out of Afghanistan-the forgotten REAL war- just like that to start his corrupt war in Iraq which he LIED about, hence, CORRUPT war.  At what point does a CORRUPT war like Iraq become honorable? - Never, corrupt is corrupt, there will NEVER be an honorable win in Iraq.   I'd rather see our troops alive and out of Iraq than any stupid 'win' title.  Again, corrupt is corrupt, there will NEVER be an honorable win in Iraq.

For Bush to start a war in Iraq off lies and not be held accountable, furthermore then getting RE-elected after all his lies, corruption, and ever embarrassingly stupid speeches, is truly beyond comprehension and a warped sense of Patriotism.  A true insult to the service of veterans especially the vets who never returned home.

Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld - Weapons of Mass Destruction, Weapons of Mass Destruction  Well, where are the Weapons of Mass Destruction?   You get ONE guess where the Weapons of Mass Destruction are NOT located.  The basis for why we invaded Iraq yet there are NO Weapons of Mass Destruction, yet WE are still there.  We got Weapons of Mass Destruction drilled into our heads by those idiots because of all the media coverage those idiots got.  Biased liberal media coverage - You have got to be kidding!

Bush worst and dumbest EVER!  He was never president, by his own choice, over ALL the people of this fine country.  If you want to be president of a country, you HAVE to be leader of ALL the people, not just the rich ones, not just the ones that look like you, and not just the ones of your political party.   Personal goals were more important to Bush rather than being honest and good and moral.   At any cost and using any corrupt means would that thick-skulled idiot use to reach HIS and Cheney's goals.  Bush, The First Puppet-President!

Bush shredded the constitution plus thumbed his nose at International Laws.  He issued the declaration of war without the proper signatures needed which passed thanks to the Republican Congress.  He violated Article 3 of the Geneva Convention.  He supported and condoned Waterboarding even though the U.S. prosecuted these exact actions during the Vietnam War as torture.  Guantanamo Bay - if that isn't the end all behind stupidity and corruption NOTHING is!  A U.S. prosecutor assigned to charge a Guantanamo detainee refused to prosecute the detainee due to the obvious torture done to the detainee.  The U.S. prosecutor said all evidence obtained to be used against the detainee was in-admissible due to the tortuous conditions.  Yet this corrupt idiot has not been impeached or been charged for war crimes.  Doesn't say much for the ethics of us as a people.  In a civilized world, it should not be acceptable to start a war off lies!

At long last, a President and Congress together to work FOR THE PEOPLE!

FINALLY, a positive future to look forward to.   Thank Goodness - what a glorious, happy, encouraging, and hopeful time!  Maybe now tolerance can be taught instead of hatred.  I only pray the Lord watches over and protects Obama for his safety.   The fact that most of the world agrees with the PEOPLE'S choice of this election should tell us something - the MAJORITY of us know what that is.

Unlike the 2004 election where the electoral vote put Bush in office, the results of this election is the PEOPLE'S choice.   Leadership we can trust and be proud of, something we have not been able to do for 8 long years.  Now we can walk with our heads held high.   Positive attitudes and a true breath of fresh air.  A good legacy to leave our children and grandchildren and generations to come.  A legacy of promise, hope, and good-will is the story left behind from this election, not like the nightmare from the corrupt and idiotic Cheney/Bush Administration.

Why is it such a big deal NOW for the majority of the political party in Congress not be the same political party as the President?  Why was it okay for idiot Bush to have a Republican Congress his first term but it is a big deal for Obama to have a Democratic Congress?  This country wouldn't be in half as much turmoil if idiot Bush wouldn't have had a Republican Congress.   We needed a Congress in Bush's first term NOT to be too scared to stand up against the idiot and Cheney.

We'll see about them working together.  It already appears some are going to put up a stink just for the sake of their party.  Seems some people care more about maintaining control than working for the people that elected them.

As someone pointed out.. the GOP has done nothing but talk about how to keep their party from diminishing and not a thing about what to do for the people they represent.  Their party will be doomed if they keep it up and if that is all they care about good riddance to them.

Only way Democrats will succeed is by not doing anything drastic. Capitalism is not broken it is working. We are experiencing the pain we deferred for last 16 years. Only problem is that the problem got bigger during that time. As painful it may be in short term, we will be strong and prosporous in long run if we STOP messing with capitalism.

These clowns should take deep breath and focus more on containing China. Otherwise, we will look back, few years from now, and wonder what were we thinking the so called "depression" was easier than to deal with Chinese.

With the thought of a worsening Obama Economic Down Turn I agree let things stay put and capitalism will work.  When Obama said he was going to double the capital gains tax the market was affected.  The two days after his win the market dropped and actually was a record two day drop ever in our history.  Ever since the election the market has been in turmoil.
