Worsening slide challenges Obama

advertisement

Friday's dismal employment report underscores the urgent need for President-elect Barack Obama to act quickly to get the economy back on track. But as the devastating economic downturn gains momentum and spreads around the globe, there is a growing concern that any actions under the new administration will have little impact in the short term.

Voters made clear they want the new Congress and the Obama administration to make the economy a top priority. More than six in 10 voters surveyed in exit polls cited the economy as the most pressing issue facing the nation, and nine of 10 said the economy is in bad shape. The other four major issues cited as most pressing — Iraq, energy, terrorism and health care — were picked by one in 10 or fewer.

The latest evidence of the downturn's severity came Friday, when the government reported the nation's employers slashed another 240,000 jobs in October, pushing the unemployment rate to a 14-year high of 6.5 percent. The economy has shed about 1 million jobs so far this year in a downturn that appears likely to be the worst recession in decades.

Obama met with economic advisers Friday amid widespread calls for fresh steps to halt the economy’s rapid deterioration and begin to turn things around. There’s no shortage of ideas: tax breaks for businesses, massive spending on roads and other infrastructure projects, government support for the ailing auto industry, tax credits for new home buyers and aggressive government intervention to backstop failing mortgages, among others.

But it will take time for any of these measures to begin to have an effect. And in the meantime, the latest economic data suggest that things are getting worse.

Consumers — who account for two-thirds of U.S. economic activity — have pulled back sharply in just the past few weeks, as job losses and the turmoil in financial markets have left them spooked. On Thursday, retailers reported steep drops in October sales. Carmakers also saw sales plunge last month, with General Motors posting a 45 percent drop, and Ford and Chrysler reporting comparable pullbacks.

Government support may help the Big Three survive the storm, but there is little government can do to stop it in the coming months.

Dealers face several major problems selling cars. The worsening job market has potential car buyers putting off a purchase until things get better. The panic in the markets that began in September has only made matters worse. Those few customers who are stepping up to buy are having a much harder time getting financing from lenders who have sharply tightened their underwriting standards.

The result, according to AutoNation CEO Michael Jackson, is a downturn beyond the auto dealership chain’s “worst-case scenario.”

“At least we had planned for worst case and were operating for worst case,” he said. “But clearly, we're past that now. The financial panic that has occurred deep into the down cycle for housing and automotive is past worst case.”

The slump has spread well beyond the battered auto and housing industries to the wider economy, sending the gross domestic product into reverse in the third quarter and signaling that a recession is likely under way.

Initially concentrated among the battered housing and construction industries, job cuts have now spread to most sectors, from retailing to professional services. About the only sectors showing growth are health care and government. With dozens of states aggressively slashing budgets to fill gaping deficits, government job losses are expected to increase.

Obama’s economic policies likely will have even less impact on the widening global slowdown. Over the long term, efforts to expand trade and coordinate oversight of global financial markets may have a positive impact. But the short-term global outlook is “dismal,” according to Howard Archer, chief European economist for IHS Global Insight.

“It is apparent that the heightened financial crisis is having a serious dampening impact on already struggling Eurozone economies and is significantly intensifying the danger of deep, extended recession,” he wrote in a recent note to clients.

Even the perennially vibrant Chinese economy is feeling the effects of the global downturn. Economists at Credit Suisse are forecasting that China’s GDP growth could be as low as 5.8 percent in the fourth quarter of this year, down from 11.4 percent in 2007.

That global slowdown could feed on itself as lower consumer demand crimps trade flows between countries. The Credit Suisse economists note that when one country is in recession, imports typically fall as consumers cut back, but exports hold steady as demand remains strong in overseas markets.

But with most economies slowing around the world and the dollar rising, demand for U.S. exports is expected to fall. That could bring yet more U.S. layoffs.

I have to say, It is no accident that the Dow Jones is tanking.  Wall Street has no (zero) (nadda) (none) any confidence in Obama.  As he already has shown he can't stick to his word but as a democrap that should be expected.

The promises of the Dem controlled house and senate two years ago haven't happened yet and you expect them to fix things now.  Every time the Republicans tried they blocked.  Well guess what..........It is time the Repubs block every issue the dems bring up that try and grow government and tax us to death.  If you want a hand out get a job, live within your means and stop expecting hard working americans to bail out those who continue to believe welfare, bankruptcy and handouts by the dems are the answer to our economy.

Is that why it tanked a while back?

Seeing how you are so smart... why don't you make suggestions on how to fix a global economy that has been Tanking for a while now.  While you are at it why don't you mention all the bills and legislation that were VETO'd the past 2 years... and what their content was about.

The Dow has seen records shatter over the last 8 years, as a matter of fact by 31% above Clinton, oh but wait we shaved the cap gains, something B.H.O. wants to raise, that equals down jones goes down.  I am not concerned with global economy, as our goes up so goes global or arn't you smart enough to notice that.  If you want to talk legislation lets go..........Bush warned if it is full of pork or had preset tax increases or caused gov to grow yes they were veto'd.

Name what has pelosi and gang done with there 2 year monopoly........NOTHING.....lowest approval rating in history.  I am not happy with everything Bush did but even his approval rating is higher then the Dems.

Repubs grew the economy, lowered taxes, rebounded from 9/11 (wouldn't have had to if Clinton did his job) and are winning two wars.  Thank god for Senators like John McCain.........God help us now, like Biden said we are going to be targeted and even he doesn't know how B.H.O. will react.  At least we will get to see him talk with those that want us dead before they re attack.

9-11 happened on Bush's watch 9 MONTHS after he took office and he HAD intelligence but ignored it.

Repubs "grew the economy" with debt you moron. Lowering taxes for the wealthy didn't create any jobs, they just pocketed it or invested outside the U.S....and claiming to win these wars is ridiculous ...but we already know repubs are ridiculous. It doesn't matter when we leave the violence will continue. Obviously Bush's tactic was to put that all off on the next prez, like the cowardly a$$hole he is.

Hey chuck,

What about Bill Clinton he did nothing when they bomb that carrier and when he had the chance to get Osama Bin Laden he didn't do a thing. Now look where we are because of that. If Bill Clinton done what he should have done we would not have lost lives on 9/11 and we would not be in a war.

So don't you blame that on President Bush. If Bill Clinton done what President Bush is doing with President Elect Obama, we may have known more but instead they was having parties and removing thing like the W from the computer keyboards.

Chuck you are so stupid but I don't need to state the obvious...  So you agree the economy grew, for one debt doesn't grow the economy buisness does with lower taxes that create jobs you "media fed MORON".   If you want to see our jobs go over seas let Obama raise the taxes our buisness' pay.  Those trickle down to idiots like you anyway.  As far as the wars we are winning (even your prez elec says so) so already you don't believe Obama, that figures (I don't blame you there).  If the violence continues it will be met by people who have freedom now and they thank us that fought for those freedoms, the same people who fear Obama will leave them alone.  Of course Obama will be pulling up a chair with our enemies talking about giving your freedoms our fore fathers fought for.  Don't worry though, we in the military will be right there protecting your rights so you can sit in the comfort of your over financed home collecting the freebees us tax paying citizens pay for.

Wake up, don't believe what the media or the Mesiah sells you, your in danger of losing your welfare ticket cause we are going stop paying our bills to cause B.H.O. said he would pay for them.

So I'm stupid because I post facts? LOL !! Nah, It just bruises your little ego that your wrong. Toughen up buttercup.

So you agree the economy grew, for one debt doesn't grow the economy

Yep I agree there's been a housing bubble since 2003 if that's your notion of growth.

We are in major debt to China over this "growth" and yes borrowing money (getting into debt ) is how these mortgage lenders grew... have you not heard of the prime rate?

If you want to see our jobs go over seas let Obama raise the taxes our buisness' pay.  Those trickle down to idiots like you anyway.

Our jobs are already going overseas thanks to "free markets" and subsidies given to billion dollar corporations invested in foreign countries .

Since the taxes trickle down to us anyway (which I will agree with because big corps DONT PAY TAXES) your arguement about sending jobs is moot anyway , dipsh*t.

so already you don't believe Obama, that figures (I don't blame you there).

Obama agreed that the surge had made gains idiot.  ONLY McCain Bush and the other fools in the repub party are trying to sell the we won BS.

Don't worry though, we in the military will be right there protecting your rights so you can sit in the comfort of your over financed home collecting the freebees us tax paying citizens pay for.

I served to protect your rights back in 87 to 91...so you can stfu.. I also own my own biz and my home.

James-472119 Now look where we are because of that. If Bill Clinton done what he should have done we would not have lost lives on 9/11 and we would not be in a war.

Since Bush obviously had to have known this then why didn't he do anything about it huh? Did Bush need Clinton's permission ? We shouldn't be in this war because IRAQ had nothing to do with it.. Man you people are thick headed. Name 1 Iraqi that flew a plane on 9/11. Just one.

Clinton was provided information on Osama bin Laden and had 3 count them 3 chanes to take him out.

Clinton himself even quoted it at a Gala Dinner in New York saying the biggest mistake he ever made was not pulling the trigger on Osama.

I served from 82 - 91.  I don't have any grudge against any candidate.  To me these parties are the same, they are all out for themselves.

Since you own your own business do you make more than 250k a year?  If so then why would you vote for someone who stated they would raise your taxes?

And don't think for a second that Israel will ask for approval to bomb Iran if it feels threatened.  It will take action first.  Then what do you think the USA will do?  It will be drawn into war with Iran.

All this crap because Clinton was to busy with Lewinski.

Amazing, obama talks & talks  and the news media eat it up and spit it back out to the public. He''s the one who will make jobs, save the economy now there is very little he or his administration can do in the short term. Not what he promised! Also, let's all remember who was really in charge the past 2 years  Nancy Pelosi yeah the democrats ran congress. Last time I checked the president can propose but the legislature(controlled by the democrats) enact the laws ans spend the money. I see more of the same for next several years because the same ones who got us here are still running the engine down the tracks

Well the first thing he could do is look into why $70 billion (10%) of this bailout $ is going to bank and insurance company executive bonuses and perks.  If they are truly getting this type of $ of for screwing up their industires and the economy it's no wonder that everything is so screwed up.  I've never heard of such a thing.  In all the industries that I've worked in during my life if your company did not make $ then there were no bonuses/perks paid period even if you made your individual goals.

The second thing he could look into is why the banks are not lending $ even though they have gotten all this bailout $.  Is it going to executive bonuses/perks first?

Obama needs to figure this all out first and quickly or there is going to be real trouble ahead.

Impartial, just so that you will not have to go thru the pain of looking up what I am talking about (took a long time to get the information):

Delaware: Freddie Mac, Fanny Mae, Bank of America, Wilmington Trust, First USA / Bank One / JPMorgan Chase, AIG, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, Barclays plc, GM, Chrysler, Wachovia, ExxonMobil, Chevron, ISDA, and those States with Corporations Incorporated at Delaware.

Especially, ISDA. The People that brought you:  the 60 to 100 Trillion USD (it is not 700 Billion USD US Economic Crisis) Global Economic Crisis.  These people will be back for more just like GM, Ford, Chysler, September 2008, 25 Billion, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, to milk the cash cow.  updated add: AIG, Billions USD.  The 60 to 100 Trillion USD does not include the usary interest protected by the Delaware Court of Chancery.

Over 50% of US publicly-traded corporations and 60% of the Fortune 500 companies are incorporated in Delaware;[1] the state's attractiveness as a corporate haven is largely due to its business-friendly corporation law. Franchise taxes on Delaware corporations supply about one-fifth of its state revenue.[2]

    1 Delaware Division of Corporations

2 Delaware 2007 Fiscal Notebook-State General Fund Revenues by Category.

There is more but some might be considered "Politically Sensitive" and could fall into the realm of EO 13292. or H.R. 1955.

Where do you think the Millions USD per day and the 15 Million USD per month came from and why wasn't the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act adhered to.

Nuff said, I am not risking my career anymore.

The Y2K bubble created the job market in the mid to late 90's and the bubble burst at 12:01 am on 1/1/2000.  Bush said in his inauguration speech that he would try to set us down slowly and as easy as possible...............he did his job, and all he's gotten for his efforts...........a bunch of spoiled rotten, nasty, childish, uniformed americans calling him every name in the book.

Bush has suffered from something most divorced parents suffer from..............mommy and daddy vying for the love of their children.  I'd bet 80% of americans know how that works.  Each parent trying to out do the other.  As it turns out, Bush is the only one who did the right thing.............he didn't spoil us, didn't care if some of us were unhappy, he just did what was right for our country!

I used to think he screwed up with the war but, after further research, found out that he actually did the right thing in taking Saddam out.  99.9% of Americans don't understand the real reason he and our allies took him out (I'm not sure if they ever will as their blind hatred keeps them from understanding).  I only wish he had enough time to take care of the other 3 scumbags.........Putin, Chavez and the leader of the pack.....Ahmedinejihadi before he leaves office!

You make some good points, however Bush did make some mistakes. Especially in how he dealt with Congress (when the GOP was in charge. They kind of got drunk on their power). But importantly he played a part in preventing further attacks on this country.

        But he's only human.

Let's take the high road and when Obama screws up (and he will, he's human too) not throw it back in his face.

Then we can vote him out in 2012.

Look....Governor Palin TOLD us at least two dozen times: Obama can talk the talk, but since he's NEVER walked the WALK, don't count on him to fix anything. We've actually already had two years of Nobama's first term, so he's only got two more coming. When you're as wet behind the ears as Nobama, you're still learning to crawl...a PREREQUISITE for walking the walk. I voted for John & Sarah, so you nobama-zombies will have to like or lump it. As for myself, I think I hear Costa Rica calling my name.

Mark and Bilbo no retort to the invest ment wise?  Come on you two have relentlessly picked on anyone who had something to say about Obama.

But I guess proof will be in the pudding as they say.

I don't wish anything to go wrong for Obama and I don't blame Bush for every little thing wrong with my life as he doesn't control me I do.

The information on the war in Iraq came from more than just 1 intelligence source outside of the USA.  They were all wrong, hence the reason that Collin Polin bailed.  I think we can all agree that the world is a better place without Saddam and his crew.

Yes there are bad people all over the world and yes they do not care if Americans are trying to be appeasing, thats why Irans national anthem has been Death to America since the 70's.  That is generations of people who hate you dispite how nice you want to be.

Its ironic that those who try to be nice and ask everyone to play nice are the ones who beg for help after they learn that lesson and should not have gone to places like that in the 1st place because they don't believe that someone can hate so blindly.

Obama is going to have his hands full and the democratic parties are the ones that are on the firing line that is a certain with almost a majority in both the house and senate.  There are no excuses on this run, other than the filibusters the republicans will not let them get by on.

Obama is the man of the people.  Obama has promised change and hope.  All will be better in an Obama presidency.  You can hear it in his words:

I "hope" the Iranians don't finish a bomb

NO Change here, same politician, same political rhetoric. Say whatever you can to get elected and then start to back pedal when elected. Little discussed by the liberal media were the discussions between Obama and his advisors about how to lower voter expectations post election...ie "we can't actually do what we said we could"  If he would have been TRULY honest I don't think a lot of people would not have cast their votes for him.

I have spoke to a very good friend of mine today. A black man that a few years ago started a successful company. I was shocked to hear how he has be sucked in on this notion that there can be economic equally in this country.  There can be a lot of things like the ability for everyone to make more and better themselves more than the ones before them but economic equally is not a possibility. I am troubled by the expectations that all those that voted for Obama expect. I think they will wake up one day and discover that he cannot deliver and then they will become a angry mob blaming everyone.

I find it quite funny how people who were/are against Obama are talking like he is already in office. It has only been two days. Anyone with brains knows that the economy will get worst before it gets better. It was like that with the Great Deprssion and it was like that when Regan was in office. They've been saying this way before we knew who the party leaders would be. We should all know that there will be setbacks on plans and creations of new ones, reevaluation on plans. It would have been the same way if McCain had won. I am an Obama supporter and if Obama had lost i would have quickly gotten over it and said that I need to be behind McCain 100%. The economy is too shi**y for people to be so negative towards their new president. I know a lot of people are hoping that Obama fails so that they can say "I told you so". That is one of the most stupidest things I have ever heard, if he fails that affects you completely.

You should be hoping and praying that he proves you wrong and not right, but that would cause some people to stop being racist and/or bitter. I wish Obama the best of luck and he is in my prayers. If he is unable to live up to these unbelievably high expectations, i will understand and say at least he tried. Why is it so hard for these country to come together for one cause? Since you love and respect John McCain so much then why don't you listen to him? He said we all should be fully behind Obama so we can get this country back up and running. Please, just try. Jeez.

Many of us, myself included ARE hoping Obama does a good job, at least what he can. But at least for myself, I have yet to see him do anything. Yes, he ran a good campaign, he gave some nice speeches, but Presidents don't run around campaigning and giving nice speeches.

I want to see who he chooses for his Cabinet. I want to see how he handles Congress (where much power lies). I want to see how he interacts with foreign leaders AND what he does vis a vis "the rest of the world".

I have been around long enough to learn that politicians will say anything (I watched Clinton do it in 1992). Rarely, if ever, do their actions as elected leaders reflect their words on the campaign trail. I need to see deeds, not just hear words before I will give my support to someone. I don't give support to anyone just because someone else says I should. That's called peer pressure. I prefer to think for myself and follow my own instincts and convictions (and guess what? That makes me normal). I know that's difficult for some to accept.

Read several of the conservative messages on this board and it will become apparent that they do want him to fail and in fact consider him to have already done so because of the market decline.  Rational conversation with them prove futile and so you battle with them on terms that they can understand.  I bash because several of the dittoheads are espousing racist and uninformed rhetoric.  While liberals have stood by and not challenged them for years, and now that some of us do, we're the ones being taken to task?  I don't get it, these conservatives appear to want to have it both ways, and I, for one, am tired of seeing that happen.

"Obama can't fix economy in short term"...Duh. What gives those who idolize him believe he will fix it at all ? From his awesomely effective time in the  playground of  the Illinois Senate or his U.S. Senatorial training almost 1/2 of which was spent campaigning. You sure bought a winning horse, America.

Only 52 percent of voters selected him.

It's a majority (just), but not a landslide in any way.

It is amazing that we are already creating excuses for Mr. Obama's poor performance before he even is sworn in.  I guess it will be interesting to see if he disproves the Bell Shaped Curve theory.  "The Bell Curve is a and discuss implications of those differences. Everyone blames the Bush administration for this economy.  Let's take a deeper look at that.  Bush has had, 9/11 to deal with, Hurricane Katrina, and the Iraq War.  Whether or not you're a supporter of the war or not, which I am, you have to admit that this war is costly.  Yet 2000-2006 the economy was prosperous.  During the Bush administration unemployment rates dropped to a 25 year low, consumer confidence was at a 25 year high, the stock market hit an all time high and the government was bringing in more revenue than it had ever seen in history in tax dollars.  All classes of society are paying less in taxes than in the Clinton Administration.  Everyone praises the Clinton administration for what it did.  I have to remind you however that it's congress that passes laws and puts them into place.  Clinton had a republican congress during his presidency.  Bush for the first 6 years had a republican congress as well.  The economy during this time was very prosperous even in a time of war and large debt.  The problem with the Bush administration is the out of control spending which does need a lot of help.  No arguement.  I'm from Illinois.  I've seen Barack Obama at work in the Senate.  He, along with the democratic Chicago Governor and his collegue Dick Durbin a democrat also from Chicago took the budget deficit of that state from $7 billion to $21 billion in just 4 years.  Making it the largest deficit of any state in the union.  This was after they raised many many taxes which caused thousands of job cuts and losses.  From 2006-2008 the economy has been slowly drained away.  For example, gas prices jumped over $2.00 a gallon on average in those 2 years.  Can we finally see that since the democrats have taken over, the economy has been in this free fall and by electing a democratic congress and president, Obama will do to this country what he helped do in the state of Illinois?  Let's not forget also Obama's promise of the top 5%.  Ya know, the class that pays %70 of the total tax bill to the United States government and creates the jobs for the lower and middle class.  The lower and middle class will feel this in job cuts, and price increases as well as when Obama allows the Bush tax cuts to expire.  This will cause everyone's taxes across the board to raise, drastically.

Can I sell some shares with projected price after one year based on your prediction of rule of 'hope' and 'change' that will uplift the economy that is brought down by Dodd & Reid & company (Fannie & Freddie)? You can keep 10% of the profit.

Actually, I am planning on buying into the DOW as soon as it hits my projected bottom, then let it sit for the long term.

Ya know, the one thing you will never be able to answer is... what a McCain presidency would turn out like -  Failure or Success.  But you will witness what an Obama presidency will do.  Failure or Success.  And with that Failure or Success comes my confidence that he will do better than what McCain had promised to do.  I will accept whatever comes... Failure or Success.   But my suggestions for all of you is to support the president and whomever he picks as his staff... and just wait and see what he does.  The beauty of the Democracy is that the people ( no matter what educational background they have ), if they disagree... they can move to make changes.

Yeah,  I love how repubs forget to mention how Dems were in agreement nearly 100% in the beginning. (Unless you bring up that repubs pushed for the war then suddenly their selctive memories kick in) That was until it started being obvious to everyone that Bush and Co were not transparent with government in the least, and they were hiding and twisting facts to fit their agenda.

Dems can't help it if were smart enough to smell a rat --we called him on it repubs kept helping him cover it all up. Way to put your country first Repubs,  by CONTINUING TO HELP THEM COVER UP THE LIES. Bush and Cheney both ignored the intelligence that said there were no WMDs.  Nice how you still support these traitors.
