BAKU — Senior U.S. energy officials have criticized Russian natural gas projects during a visit to energy-rich Azerbaijan.
A U.S. special envoy for Eurasian energy issues said Thursday that Russia's planned South Stream pipeline to Europe will be expensive and difficult to build. C. Boyden Gray said the project currently is not competitive with two U.S.-backed plans for Caspian Sea gas export pipelines.
Russia and the U.S. are struggling for influence over energy export routes from the former Soviet Union.
Also in Azerbaijan, U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman said the Russian creation of an OPEC-like group to coordinate gas prices would be bad for consumer nations.
Russia has said it won't set up such a cartel but plans closer coordination with other producers such as Iran and Qatar.
