Irate man wields bat to liberate his lost cat

Police are looking for an irate pet lover so intent on liberating his lost cat that he wielded a bat to fend off animal shelter employees. Dallas Animal Shelter manager Kent Robertson said the man found his missing gray and blue short-haired cat at the shelter, where it had been brought by someone who thought it was a stray.

He blew his stack when told he had to pay a $132 fee to take his cat.

Police say the man returned Monday, loaded his cat into a carrier without paying the fee, and threatened the staff with the baseball bat. No one was injured.

Most people thank shelter workers. Says Robertson: "This was pretty extreme."

The man could be charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated assault.

Police Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse says police have a clue — the man signed the shelter guest book before fleeing.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I don't agree with his methods, but trying to extort $132 from a cat owner whose cat was catnapped? Are they running a cat mule service?

The fee does sound a little high. Obviously, shelters need to charge something, but would they rather the cat be put to death? $132 in this economy is a big chunk of change. I'd be pretty angry too.

I'd be telling the shelter to try to recoup that $132 from the person who brought the cat in, not the person who had his cat stolen.

I think his cat was lost not stolen.  But I'd still be pretty mad if they tried to make me pay $132 because my cat got out of the house...  After all, it only cost me $25 to adopt her in the first place.

i wouldnt  pay it either. all they were supposed to do was hold the cat.who gave them the right to inflict pain and unwanted fees to that  persons pet ?sounds like the cat was obviously well taken care of an obviously well tamed.a sure way for that hole to make some money off a little boy/girl needing a pet.we all know what would of happened if  that been a wild cat ,you couldnt of got near it an they definitely wouldnt of bothered with all the fees.sounds like a crooked system to me.hopefully he signed his name john doe.

They probably learned that trick of charging outragious fees from the vehicle impound lots.

I doubt the cat was lost. While in college, some family friends had moved across town, about 5 miles away. I was painting their old house and their cat showed up. I took him back to the new house and he showed up again the next day. This went on until I finished the painting.

I have heard quite a few cat stories like this.

I've heard of people who don't like their neighbours' cats catching the animals and taking them to the pound. This was either in the hope that the pet owner would either not find the animal, or become so intimidated/impoverished by repeatedly having to rescue their pet from the shelter that they'd lock their pet indoors. Some people are real creeps.
