Argentines keep up blockade of Uruguay bridge

MONTEVIDEO — Argentine protesters have been at it for two long years, blocking a main bridge into Uruguay over a paper plant they say pollutes their shared river.

The environmental activists still want the closure of a Finnish-built pulp plant. Uruguay say the plant meets environmental standards, a claim supported by several international studies. But the demonstrators aren't budging.

The two-year protest has kept political tensions high between the historically friendly South American countries. Argentina backs their blockade, while Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez defends the plant as an important investment.
