Hard times mean leaner Thanksgiving

— For Bridget Smith and her family, Thanksgiving is going to be different this year. For one thing, they might not have a dining room table.

Smith, a Corona, Calif., mother of four, is putting her family's furniture up for sale on Craigslist in an effort to pay the mortgage, which is behind schedule.

“We’re trying to be as lighthearted as we can about this," she said. "I keep telling my husband when things pick up, we’ll get really nice things again.”

The Smiths, along with millions of other families across the country, have seen the economic downturn take a bite out of their Thanksgiving dinner, raising the prospect that a normally joyful holiday will be darkened by financial gloom this year.

Traditionally, the Smiths have hosted a Thanksgiving meal in their home with members of their extended family. David, Bridget's husband, sells security systems to car dealers. Money was never an issue in the past, but as auto sales have crumbled this year, so have his sales.

This year, “my sister-in-law is having to pay for everything,” said Bridget, who worked for Merrill Lynch before becoming a stay-at-home mom. “It’s really humbling.”

Table or not, the Smiths are still grateful for what they do have. David has been receiving unemployment benefits, and the family has applied for food stamps, but Bridget, 34, said, “We have the whole family and everyone’s pretty healthy, and that’s a lot to be thankful for.”

The Smiths aren't alone in their difficulties.
One in eight Americans struggled to feed themselves even before this year’s economic slump, according to an Agriculture Department report published last week; 36.2 million adults and children didn't get enough food in 2007.

Food banks overwhelmed
And that number seems sure to rise this year.

“The demand is at a historic all-time high with our food banks,” said Ross Fraser, media relations for
Feeding America, which provides food to more than 200 food banks across the country. “It has been increasing steadily over the last year or more, especially among the working poor and people who have experienced sudden job loss.”

The collapse of the housing market has been a major contributor, Fraser said. Many who never needed assistance before — mortgage brokers or real estate agents who made $70,000 last year but may only make $17,000 this year — are now among the 25 million people who get food from the foundation.

While the demand for food is up — Fraser says some recipients wait up to eight hours in line to receive a couple bags of groceries — donations also have risen, which Fraser believes is because of increased awareness of hunger in America.

Genevieve Armstrong of Tucson, Ariz., has only a part-time job, and she isn't sure her family will celebrate Thanksgiving.

“We thought about just maybe going for breakfast, just doing something very untraditional,” Armstrong, a 52-year-old mother of two college-age daughters, said. Armstrong works for company in the real estate industry and said she has been buying less and less food — even skipping dinner on a regular basis.

“I guess a good thing is I’ve lost 10 pounds. There’s always something bright you can find in a bad situation, right?”

Armstrong is trying to find a second job so she can finance the rest of her kids’ education. To save money, she started shopping at the Wal-Mart store in her area, buying only sale items. “I just buy the bare minimum to get by,” she said.

Wal-Mart is paying attention to customers like Armstrong. The nation’s biggest retailer recently announced a new plan called Operation Main Street.

“We anticipate saving customers $200 million” through the program, which discounts some of the most popular store items, Wal-Mart spokeswoman Melissa O’Brien said. The company has been promoting its $35 complete Thanksgiving dinner for eight, including a turkey and all the necessary ingredients.

The economic pain has been exacerbated by rising costs at the grocery store, said Stewart Ramsey of IHS Global Insight, an economic forecasting and consulting firm.

Even though prices of commodities like oil have been plummeting, grocery stores prices still reflect a surge in producer prices over the summer. “The pasta that you bought in the store last weekend is based on wheat that was grown months ago — potentially as much as a year ago," Ramsey said.

That formula applies to Thanksgiving dinners as well. Turkeys on sale in the supermarket now were fed corn back when corn was at a higher price.

With so much unsteadiness in the market, Ramsey says many companies will be hesitant to lower prices for a while.

But there is hope for the near future, Ramsey says. With the price of oil going down, fuel surcharges on food transport are being scaled back.

He said prices could start going down in certain sectors of the food chain in about six months.

While many readers shared stories of scaled-back Thanksgivings through msnbc.com’s
FirstPerson reports, plenty also said they plan no changes to their feasts this year. One reason is that food is still relatively cheap in this country.

“In Asia, you have consumers that spend huge percentages of their incomes on staples — 40 percent and upwards,” Ramsey said. By contrast, Americans typically spend just 9.8 percent of their income on food, according to the USDA.

'Good will come back to you'
John Peacher of Martinsburg, W.Va., is struggling financially but counting on karma to get him through it.

“In times of difficulty, if you help others who are in need, that good will come back to you,” Peacher, a 54-year-old school custodian, said.

A 10-pound bag of rice to the local rescue mission, stuffed animals hand-sewn by his wife, Jane, for nurses to hand out to sick children at hospitals, and a little money saved up to charities he is familiar with — despite living paycheck to paycheck and stomaching increases in grocery bills, utilities and health care costs, the Peachers are contributing in any way they can.

“I try to give. If power companies, gas companies and auto companies would contribute to society, this would be the No. 1 country,” he said. For Thanksgiving, the Peachers’ son, who lives 30 miles away, will come home and enjoy a modest dinner with them and John’s mother-in-law, who lives in their town.

Bridget Smith, the California mother of four, never expected to be relying on government aid to pay for her family’s staples.

“The faces of the women waiting to get their vouchers so they can feed their children is haunting,” she said. “Most women look like they are in a really hard time in their lives.”

some of the depth, but missed the point that this family obviously has overextended itself, selling off furniture already?

My wife and I work and live on a budget, bought a house that we could afford with a significant down payment that we had saved, we own our cars (10 & 5 years old), we also pay enough attention to what is going on in the world and pulled our savings out of the markets and went to cash deposits in January '08.  Now we will be paying higher taxes to bail out union workers, dead beat credit card users and others who can't plan for their own futures.

I feel sorry for the children of people who cannot live within their means.

Folks are losing their jobs in this mess; any job, professional or not. While people living on the ragged edge or beyond is always a stupid thing to do; it simply isn't possible for anyone to live within their means when their means are taken away.

having grown up in a family where money was always hard to come by I learned to plan for the worst and hope for the best.  I always pledged to pay cash, and aside from our mortgage that is what we have always done.  It meant doing with a little less but the peace of mind has certainly made up the difference.  Our home isn't the biggest I we qualified for but it is what we can afford.

Capt. Marv, I imagine from your post that you and probably your wife are still working. That you haven't lost your jobs, and are trying to keep your home loan paid on time with nothing more than unemployment? You are lucky, it really doesn't matter a whole lot how well you plan ahead, if something happens like the economy going bad, or a serious illness or injury that ends your ability to work, it doesn't take long for savings and retirements to be used up and leave you with nothing. There are large segments of society who have lost their jobs, and are trying to stay above water while they seek new employment. I hope that your luck holds out, and I wish that you had some compassion for those who are experiencing a down turn in their luck.

You obviously are much too responsible to qualify for any assistance. Only people who default on their mortgages and credit cards will benefit from the proposed handouts. When you get your rebates, I'm sure you'll continue to do the wrong thing and put it into savings. By all accounts, you are among the 90%+ of Americans that know what it means to live within your means. The government certainly needs you, but unfortunately will only punish you for your frugality. Congress can't wait to buy all of those Subprime Mortgages so they can re-write them to bail out the "poor" people who are irresponsible.

Yes the govt depends on me, 50% of my income goes to taxes every year.  I am far from being in the upper income bracket, but Obama has killed my dream of ever getting there, why bother if I'll just have to pay him more in taxes .

The wife and I still work, but we saved whenever we could so that we would have at least a year's worth of income in an accessible reserve should something ever happen to either one of us again, that's right, again.  Both the wife and I have had major medical issues after being hit by a drunk driver who didn't have insurance, but because we planned ahead for the worst and hoped for the best we survived. There's something out there called insurance, which 1 in 4 motorist don't have, and it's not expensive.

Yes, our rebate check went into savings, we'll need to use it to pay our higher income taxes in 2009.

I haven't heard anything from the local government about it doing with less, all I hear is how is it going to be able to raise taxes without voter approval.

Mr wonderful or whatever, you are the only reponsible person in the United states and I am glad to see your responsibilty stick out.

Your ego is bigger then you and I am so glad I don't know you, as this isn't about you but the regular american who has lost a job and had it made until then.

I hope for you that you don't have to pay others debts but we who still make payments and weren't born rich have had a @!$%# load handed to us too so get rid of your ego and get lost.

Captain Marvelous...........

I think people are missing your entire point. My mother is 68 years old and she does not get a dime from the federal govt. My Dad worked until the day he suffered a massive heart attack. He was DOA. He never had the chance to get in debt because he taught me and my family that if we could not afford to pay cash for something, "we didn't need it". We could do without. We could live and not complain nor whine. And we didn't complain. We were a happy family that understood the meaning of the word sacrifice.

My family managed to save. Dad saved because he knew how to make a dollar last. No credit cards in his wallet. He didn't wish to be near one. They in his opinion were nothing but trouble. He was right. I worked by his side and I learned his trade. As a licensed electrician, I myself have never had a credit card. The one piece of plastic I have is called a check or debit card. I've never-ed used it. I believe the same that my Dad believed. Purchase what your wages allow you to purchase once the monthly bills have been paid-ed. Save what you can save from the few dollars leftover. That is the American way. Saving, and expecting that a rainy day of huge proportion made be around the corner and could hit at anytime.

My Mother over the last 9 years has managed to live a rather decent life with the $11.000 and a $20,000 bond, my Dad left her, 8 years ago.  Her only other income has been a small check which she receives from the Local Electricians Union that Dad had for years paid-ed dues to. It does not even amount to $400.00 a month.

I have no ill will for anyone who has a hard or is presently living a hard life. My heart goes out most especially to the children in such a family. The children are the innocent ones who must suffer. Parents can't convince me that they are in the position they're in due to bad times unless they refused to sacrifice and save as they should have attempted. I accept their argument if they did indeed save and sacrifice as they should have.

There wasn't a need for the name calling and saying you need to go out and pin yourself with a medal. The need is for others to understand the simple philosophy of sacrificing, and saving for bad times. I'm certain many have done this and they are living a better life for it.

No-one every promised me nor any-other person that life would be a rose garden. Life is what an individual makes of it. Life is understanding what may lay around the corner and how badly it could effect. It's a very simple philosophy that even the most simple individual understands.

21st Jack,

Great idea. Beat down the fiscally responsible folks among us just because the Thanksgiving season is upon us.

I am one of the financially frugal that spends less on myself so that I am able to aid multiple family members that would otherwise not be able to afford a traditional Thanksgiving holiday. Do I expect thanks? No. Do I receive a direct benefit? A home cooked meal? Absolutely not.

My 'job' is to provide for my extended family, while also supporting myself. I'd be ashamed if my family members had to depend on public assistance for something as simple as a turkey. I buy many turkeys, every year. I'm happy to do it. I'm content to know that my family and friends are happy, even though I do without.

My holiday season will be joyous. I don't care if I have turkey, on Thursday. My family and friends will.. and that's good enough for me.

          Obama hasn't done anything, yet!

All of the Republican scare tactics worked on those who are small of mental status. Rush Limbaugh is a sociopath who chooses to bring others down to his level. Apparently, those wallowing in these depths don't understand.

This recession has been in effect since the year 2001.  Those of us with a college education and have played by the rules have been struggling for years.  This 'mess' didn't just start and is simply the last straw on the already teetering lives of most of us.

Captain probably gives money to charity to write off his taxes.  He doesn't want any personal stories to concern him.  As long as we stay in the shadows and remain nameless, he is comfortable.  Unfortunately, most Republicans think the same way.

My hours at work have been cut way back so this years turkey day meal is going to be split pea soup.  The only turkey will be the smoked turkey neck bones I use to flavor the soup.  All the invitees are bringing the rest of the feast.  Wine, pies, breads, salad, munchies.  It does not matter what we eat, really, as long as we are together.

i agree, msnbc always picks the worst examples for its stories, 4 kids, no, i dont care if you can afford them, you are overpopulating the world. the worst women in this story whose husband is on unemployment because his field of work is drying up, is he trying to find another job? why hasnt she got a job? if she has kids she can work weekends or evening at walmart or mcdonalds etc, every little helps. and as for the comments about the poor people who have gone from $70k a year to $17k, umm did you not think to save for the future, i could saved at least $20k a year off that, but as they are prob typical americans if they earnt $70k, they prob lived the lifestyle of a $70k income, does no one save when they are doing well anymore??

i have three children and have never had a problem providing for them before my husband lost his job the other week. we don't have car loans, or credit cards. we don't have student loans to pay. we are responsible in carrying life insurance and full coverage auto insurance on our paid for volvo. yup, one car for a family of five. my husband made a good living driving an 18 wheeler for years. now the economy has dried up and we narrowly missed being evicted when we left on our own just last week. we're lucky to be able to squeeze in with my parents, but that meant moving to another city. so now we're here and we've had to apply for unemployment, food stamps, in addition to looking for work. know of any trucking companies out there that are hiring??

by the way, just who the hell made you people the 'population police'?

Yes, children are blessings. But how about responsibility toward these "blessings"? Weren't you born in this county? Haven't you known that sometimes you might loose a job? Just a little thinking ahead, that's what it takes, especially when you decide to have 4 children. That's a big decision.

What a charitable attitude.  I was just getting ready to say that no matter how hard we have it, we only have to look to our neighbor to find someone who is worse off than we are.  When I purchased my groceries today, I made sure that I also purchased a donation bag for a needy family.  This is not a time for being judgmental....help your fellow man and it will come back to you.  May you be blessed.

The article was heart rending, and the children are beautiful and it's the kids that are our future, don't you know?  What does all this uncharitable talk tell us about the attitudes in our beautiful country?  We can be better than this, do better than this or become better than this.  I'm 71 years old and have been through tough times in the past, but America is the land of opportunity still, compared to the rest of the world.  Can't we ever stop griping and instead look  around for ways to fix our problems?  It is up to us, you know, one person at a time.  Happy Thanksgiving to one and all regardless of where or what you eat.  Give thanks for being alive.  Smile.  God Bless you all.  GG

Shall we judge you as you judge people that care for and love their children?  It is no one's business but that of those who choose to procreate.  I feel that such words as idiot are only spoken by those who need someone who loves and cares for them in their lives, but do not allow it...You are the one I feel sorry for!!

look what happened to china, pretty soon these people who dont know how to use contraception and pop out 17 kids will end up restricting us all to 1, hmm and we know how that turned out for china, thousands of baby girls murdered and abandoned. im not trying to be the population police but cant you even a little bit see how it will affect things if everyone has 15 kids, thats 15 more houses to find, 15 more jobs to find, 15 more lots of natural resources, eventually it will come to a head, we already dont have enough houses and jobs to support this population.

You can bet your bottom dollar that the people on this thread who are complaining about people who have too many kids, or have not planned things out well enough (and by the way HOW DO YOU KNOW HOW THEY PLANNED???) will be yelling and crying the loudest for help when they lose their jobs. Stuff happens, just be glad it hasn't happened to you YET, and try having a little compassion you know that is what is supposed to make ya human.
I have one son and one nephew that I raised as a single mother, with no help from family or welfare or childsupport. I had a savings, and a retirement plan, until I was injured on-the-job, was denied everything except medical costs and only related to the injury, I can nolonger walk and am now back in school. I have exhausted my savings, and my retirement. I still do not receive any financial help except for social security which I had to fight 5 years to get. So no matter how many or few kids you have, no matter how well you plan your future STUFF HAPPENS........... and I still bought an extra turkey dinner for charity for those who are worse off than I am.

seriously? lol. 15 kids? who has 15 kids?? i think that was a laughable exageration. i really doubt we'll start putting a limit on how many children are allowed per uterus. give me a break.

to all of you who are struggling and still managing to help where you can - thank you! i read some of these posts and was inspired. kaara - because of your input i was especially inspired to pick up a wishlist from a local 'angel tree'. it's not much but $15 got a senior citizen some socks, a small bottle of cologne, a small bag of diabetic candy, and a pair of sweatpants. i literally have $0.37 left in my purse, no income expected, but feel amazing. it's almost liberating in a way. your post gave me courage. thank you.

my exact thoughts. what became of using common sense? what person said, you will have a wonderful life if you don't attempt to make a life out of life?

no person is promised that life will forever be perfect. It's about fundamentals.

Just a little thinking ahead, that's what it takes, especially when you decide to have 4 children. That's a big decision.

All the thinking ahead and saving doesn't change that life happens, jobs can vanish, an emergency can drain the savings accounts and you can be left in very dire straits indeed.

Save your compassion for the people who are suffering over things they had no control over -- medical bills, elderly parents who need care, etc.   There's going to be plenty of them before this nightmare is over.  A spoiled family who took out second mortgages on their home until they owed 600K??  Please.  These people are embelmatic of what's *caused* the curent meltdown.  The victims, on the other hand, likely won't be featured on the front page of MSNBC.

Hunger and I have been lifetime friends, at the age of 12, I weighed a whopping 60 lbs. When I had my own family, I was able to provide for my own, and made sure that they at least were always fed. Now at the age of 54, I find myself severely disabled, unable to work, I weigh 95lbs, at 5ft 7, and my friend hunger is back in my world, thankfully he and I know each other very well.

It takes every cent of my SSI, to pay my rent and electric, I live in an apartment, after losing the home I had owned for 15 years, disability couldn't cover the payments. (if I had not become ill, the home would have been paid off last year). I do get a small amount of food stamps each month, just enough to live off of bread and canned soup through the month, and believe me I'm very thankful for that. I tried for awhile to get food baskets to help out, but after standing for hours on end in long lines full of children, I can't force myself to do that anymore, those children need the food way more then I do, they have a life ahead of them, where as my time left here is limited. So please, if you can afford to give, do so, there are just too many people whom need it, my gift to the world, would be the hope of not ever seeing children in those food lines, they are our hope, and our future.

For many mothers, there is no increase in income with a wage-earning job due to the cost of childcare, new clothing, gas, and other expenses related to having a job. Just because you don't fall into that category doesn't mean that ALL mothers don't.

Unemployment is around 6%, that means 94 people out of 100 can find work.  If you put your pride aside you can find a job to pay the bills, or at least the bare essentials, until this whole mess blows over.

It's 6.5 percent and with the folks that have run out of unemployment benefits (that do not count), the percent is 10.5 percent...That is one heck of a lot of unemployment...Crime is really on the rise and we let ILLEGALS take those jobs that real Americans would take...So if you cannot help out AMERICANS by showing a little compassion and understanding then you should just stop posting here..

Eric you are correct, and GG what a nice lady you are. We are all a bit on edge not knowing what tomorrow will bring, or dump on us at this time. We as Americans have been used to many advantages and good living most of the world can not even hope or dream about.

What we pay out for illegal benefits is only one of the obscenities of our government. During the great depression Hoover rounded them up and sent them packing. In 1954 Eisenhower signed the "Wet Back Act" so our returning GI's would have those jobs to come home to. 12,000,000 in 2.5 years were again rounded up and shipped back. Now we have Bail outs which included golden parachutes. Car Czars flying in on Lear jets looking for a piece of our Thanksgiving pie. Don't get PO'd at your neighbors (in the American sense) P on Washington and our corrupt representatives. Call them be a pest, a squeaky wheel. They are the vermin along with the CEO's and their lobbyists who have them in their pocket, while they fleece ours. Get mad but direct it where it belongs and DO something; CALL Write. I waited 20 min to get through it was worth it. The switch boards are lit up like Christmas trees. # 202-456-1111 or 202-456-3121. If you can't have turkey for Thanksgiving then call one.

My parents along with many others survived the Depression we will too. We are Americans we just need to relocate that spirit of our parents and grandparents. Some may remember Victory gardens, wood stoves, and canning. Those that can should. Co-ops. Hunting for those that do. Sewing/mending we have become too wasteful. And Christmas was not about buying expensive gifts it's about giving something of yourself. Talk to God if you believe, it helps. He's up all night any way.

Stay close folks and be blessed.

Going hungry? Give me a break!! These people aren't going hungry. Our homeless aren't going hungry. We Americans are a glutenous (sp?) bunch of people. We are supposed to be sympathetic for people living the good life who are hitting hard times? Let me tell you what hard times are folks: Try visiting a 3rd world country. Watch children sifting through the landfills looking for food. Shuddup on the whining and be thankful that you WILL have something to eat on Thanksgiving. It may not be turkey. So what???? Be thankful that your kids are still alive and healthy, be thankful that your still together, be thankful that you are NOT STARVING. You should be grateful if all you have is hotdogs to eat on thanksgiving. There was a time when I went without meals on occasion. There was a time when I sold my class ring to buy a license tag for my car. There was a time when I sold my wedding rings to buy groceries and you didn't see my face or my comments on the internet saying how I am going hungry. This country has had the good life for way to long and the attitude that bad things can 't happen to this country. What has happened to this country is GREED, OVER INDULGENCE, GREED, ETC. Stop the whining folks. Your not starving. Americans don't know what that word truly means!!!!!!!

You're right. It looks like if the family can go out to eat only 2 times per day instead of 3, they're considered as hungry. People should visit some other countries indeed where educated working people never can afford going out to a restarurant. I think that part of our welfare system should be educating people how to cook, how to buy a chicken for $5 and make a dinner for a couple of days instead of ordering a pizza.

Look, it is a shame the welfare system has allowed a lot of people who just plain don't want to work.  Some of the people I counsel would rather take welfare than work a job 'below them' This doesn't mean everyone on welfare or accepting assistance falls in that category.

When times are tough, it is human nature to cast down those who seem to be getting things for free that the rest of us have to work so hard for.

Fears are high right now that we might need help but wouldn't qualify for it.  Stuff does happen and it is all too real.

The welfare system has encouraged many people not to work. I've seen men and women now living on welfare who are able to work. Yet they live off the taxpayer and have no qualms.

They've helped tear apart the fabric of America.

Ruthy, Solomon has  a point. Those so called icons/heroes would not be able to be that wealthy if people did not pay the ridiculous amounts of money to see them perform. As for heroes ... Not mine, not my son's or my grandson's. there are far worthier people to admire. Many are dead.

Real heroes are REAL, selfless people who put one foot in front of the other get off their cushy ass and work, fight for our country, protect and defend our helpless, (police + fire depts) friends and family who love and support us as we with them. Strangers who are kind. It's the simple acts of a decent humanity that make heroes.

As parents and grandparents we should be the role models. My Grampa was mine, and he is one of the blessings in my life I will always be tankful for. Keep in mind it was these people who weathered the wars and the great depression. Learn from that lesson. We too will weather our storm.

i do think that there is a unspoken component to many families hardship and that is having more children than they can really afford.  people get very upset when this is brought up but it really is true...when people decide to have 3, 4 and above children do they ever consider what would happen if they were to become unemployed or disabled for any prolonged period? or do they just say "the lord will provide"? well its not the lord giving these folks food stamps its me the taxpayer who btw never had any children because i never felt financially secure enough.  In order to have a family you need money and LOTS of it

#10 - beekum - And I know from experience that having a family is worth every penny!  I am grateful for my 6 children, my 16 grandchildren and my 5 greatgrandchildren.    Who has the right to tell others what to do, if there is no law against it?  We could scream and kick and holler all day on this public forum about this subject, but not everyone is willing to have an abortion or thinks it is the right answer.  I took care of my family no matter how tight money became, and now they are taking care of me.  Is that short-sighted or looking towards the future of hope and fullment? Both ways our family is blessed.   GG

Well it's too bad that this family is struggling, since the Republicans have been giving 30 percent more than Democrats all these years to charity, let them go to the Democrats and Obama,  maybe he will share some of that 700 million he spent to rig the election. Maybe some of the foreigners that illegally gave 60 million to his campaign would be willing to cough up some more. Maybe Obama would be willing to share the $126,000 he got from Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac to keep his mouth shut that they were in trouble. One thing is for sure, since we are going to spread the wealth in this country, to those to lazy to work, I'm not going to give one more dime to charity, I'll start putting in in my 401k instead.

After reading a few of the posts, I wasn't even going to bother leaving my thoughts.  I'm so tired of the judgmental and idealogical thoughts often expressed on msnbc.  I read on and found others who felt the same way.  My comment is mainly that struggling is no stranger to me and my family.  I was raised in a family where money was scarce.  My husband is self-employed and his income has ebbed and flowed over the years.  Because of this and the fact that we were told years ago there could be no social security for us, we bought a home we could afford and took a fifteen year note.  We could not get a mortgage loan because of my husband's income irregularity, so we found one that was owner financed.  The property had a small mobile home park and we kept that and used it to pay the mortgage.  We have been mortgage-free for three years now.  This downturn in the economy is nothing different than the way we normally live - our cut-backs have been cut back.  But people mentioned that families used to help each other, and that is what we are doing.  We have three children ages 32, 27 and 26 who are trying to make it in this challenging economic environment, so we help them where we can.  None of us will ever qualify for any kind of government hand-outs, but we wouldn't want them if we could.  We know how to do without.  It's better than depending on the federal government.

It doesnt matter how the Smiths got there or why.  They are there now and doing their best to manage.  I think their children are beautiful.  Although very young I hope they remember this Thanksgiving with their family - it will probably prove to be one of the most memorable of their lives.  I too live in California.  My job is one of those affected by the economy and I fear taxes on both property and vehicle will be rising to meet the state deficit.  Seems like Arnold has not heard of the cant get blood from a turnip saying.  If you can afford to please donate staples such as oatmeal, rice, beans and cornmeal  to your local food pantry.  Young or old everyone should eat. Those of you that can afford to please help in your community with these kinds of donations.  It really makes a difference.

Yes things have got bad, so we think. But do we really know what BAD is? Not really! .. Stop whining people. And look at the bright side of things. Lookat all we really have, and what we have got. Really people if you think this is bad. You have not seen @!$%# yet! This is just a WAKE UP CALL to the people that run America. And it is saying, you better get in going and right.

But to tell you the truth, I would not count on them to learn a thing. As you can see where they have got us. in one big mess.

It's a shame but now we reap the rewards of socialism. The we know better than you mentality...we just want to help you. The villains are Franks, Pel-ousy, Dodd and the rest of these cretins trying to expand their power base by making YOU the American taxpayer provide upscale housing to those "no way in hell" in a position to afford paying back home mortgages. And if you think things are going to get better...forget about that. This new bunch coming to Washington are just more of the same big spenders. Doubt that? Then how did OBAMAS 150 bil plan just jump to 700 billion. Folks this money does not exist. It will be printed up and the cost of everything will double. But know what? The American people deserve some blame too. They are over extended in credit and living beyond their means. This maybe the belt tightening lesson we all need to learn including congress but I doubt it will happen there.

I'll tell you what really cracks me up though...all the people waiting with bated breath for Obama expecting him to solve all the worlds ills. As if he is some demi-god. Check it out folks. Change we can believe in? Then why are all Bill Clinton's cronies back in? Eh? Same ole stuff. Oh and now no tax increase on the rich for 2 years....I thought that was the cornerstone of the Obama economic plan. Huh...That was McCain's. I wish the best for all of you with problems and some are in poor locations to weather out this situation. I'm now motivated to go down and buy some groceries and give it to the salvation Army.

No...am serious. The area I live in is pretty impoverished and you would never notice a downturn in the economy anyway. Lucky for all here is everyone looks out for each other. No one goes hungry at least. The other thing is the area is abundant with fish and game so contributes a large part to everyones diet and the laws are such that we can harvest for others...and we do.

solomonpal: Since you live in a 'pretty impoverished' area, then why would you hold to the stupid rhetoric from Rush Limbaugh and the Republicans.  The Republicans are for big business and anything they can pillage.  They do not care about you or any PERSON in this country. All they want is 'to be in power' at all times at any cost.

I'd much rather have a bunch of intelligent people from the Clinton era than any old, rich Republican ruinning this country.

You don't know what socialism is! The U.S. doesn't want any part of the European culture unless it benefits the rich.

Currently, the U.S. government pays INSURANCE PREMIUMS for those on welfare.  They don't pay for each individual's medical bills anymore.  That is all Obama wanted to do--pay the insurance premiums for those who can't get insurance but don't qualify for welfare. If everyone has health insurance, then the hospitals won't be raising their costs to cover those they treat that do not pay them.

Our employers cannot afford to pay for health insurance any longer.  Our salaries are suffering because of it. Our income is suffering because we pay ever increasing insurance premiums.   Hell, ALL OF US should pay into health insurance based on our income (period).  IF that is Socialism--bring it on!

Twenty some odd years ago, Bush Senior and the Trilaterla commission declared that Americans needed to spend a greater percentage of their income on food.

I do sympathise for this family and every other going through hard times we are no strangers to it either in 35 years of marriage had numerous times spent wondering where the next paycheck would come from - lay-offs, companies closing etc., while my children were small I was a stay at home Mom - saved more that way in work expense, gas, auto, DAYCARE, clothing etc. and went to work when the kids were all in school. Been there and done a lot of it - don't know from one week to the next if my husbands job will hold out - mine is ok but have never been in the above income area, always lower to maybe mid but we've always worked when we could find it (anything brings in something) but also a few times were on food stamps and unemployment- but it doesn't matter. The biggest comment I would like to make is not for the families but the part about WalMart helping the people - what a crock of bologna - in our area WalMart's prices are sometimes higher than other places and always higher than our neighboring town. I am not a WalMart fan as they have driven the smaller businesses out and consume the area and force prices to what they are. I really don't see them helping in our community much at all - sure the boxes are there for you to donate for toys for tots, salvation army, local food pantry that is about as much help as WalMart gives our community. And most folks that work for WalMart almost need to be on foodstamps to survive - the wages are so low compared to the some of the others in the area we live in. Business is business though - right? I will and do pray for others I have many blessings and a lot to be thankful for and a very supportive family, all of which I am extremely thankful for - Happy Thanksgiving - no matter who or where or what circumstance you are in.

I don't remember that Hugh. I have Europeans that come and stay with me 3 months out of the year and they are amazed at how much more expensive our food and produce are.  Especially when most of our produce is grown here.

unfortunately i am not wrong, i wish i was. this story is not about you and your family.  from what you wrote your situation is very different than most people in america today.  you obviously understand living within your means.  just the fact that you have been mortgage free for 3 years is a testament to how different you are than most americans today.

The american dream has been a house with a white picket fence and 2.5 kids, but the fact of the matter is that is that dream is just that.. a dream not based in reality at all as we now can see.  i simply do not understand why couple don't stop at one child or two at most.

it becomes my business when these families who keep popping out kids because its gods will suddenly cant pay for them all. yes children are great but if everyone keeps having larger families the population just keeps getting bigger instead of remaining stable and then there are even more jobs and houses needed to support them in the future.

It's all fun games until you start messing with a fat mans food!  I had to tell my special needs son no the other day when he asked for a simple toy due to lack of money!  It hurt me to say it as much as it hurt him to hear it.  What a great country we live in.  Go Barak, SPEND!  Our great, great, great grandchildren will still be paying this debt back.  All great societies come to an end.  The greed of big business, politicians, and the "poor" milking our Gov. is the end for the U.S.

How bout that Walmart.  First they make sure the US loses lots of manufacturing jobs by pressing their suppliers for cheaper goods, they're not in the top 20 China-trading partners list for nothing, then they make sure their employees have the local social services phone numbers for when they get sick so the taxpayers can help out. Now that they've destroyed so many small town shopping areas they're going to give cheap Thanksgiving packages for dinner.  WOW!

First of all I don't work at Walmart, I don't have stock in Walmart and I dislike shopping there. But they are living the American dream of a capitalistic country. They have inflicted some heavy home town loses. But do provide steady employment for millions of American workers. Generating large tax dollars into our system. The way they do business is leagal. They provide affordable shopping for the working class people of this country. Even though I don't agree with there policies, I find it hard to deflame there marketing of low priced thanksgiving meals. The best to you and yours this holiday season.

Here's a good word (or two) for today's economy and struggling families....BIRTH CONTROL!   I understand the love for children, but be responsible.  There are enough poverty stricken, starving kids in the world.
