KING OF PRUSSIA — InterDigital Inc. said Tuesday it has agreed to resolve a patent dispute involving Samsung Electronics Co.'s sale of wireless handsets.

The wireless technology company said it has granted Samsung a license that covers 3G — or third generation — wireless handsets through 2012. The license allows InterDigital to collect royalties.

InterDigital said the agreement also covers a payment dispute over 2G models.

The company had filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission alleging Samsung was importing and selling 3G units in the U.S. that violated InterDigital patents.

The ITC was expected to issue a final judgment in March 2009.

InterDigital said Samsung has 45 days to select between two payment options, the details of which were not disclosed. The first payment will be due early in 2009 and all litigation between the companies will end, InterDigital said.

"I am extremely pleased that we have reached a favorable agreement with Samsung to end this longstanding dispute," William J. Merritt, InterDigital's chief executive, said in a statement.
