DANCING WITH THE STARS - "Episode 710" - After nine weeks of entertaining drama, surprises and dazzling performances, Lance Bass, Brooke Burke and Warren Sapp have broken away from the pack and earned the right for a chance to be crowned champion of "Dancing with the Stars." The three finalists had their last opportunity to impress the judges and viewers on two nights of final competition, beginning MONDAY, NOVEMBER 24 (8:00-9:32 p.m., ET), on ABC. (ABC/KELSEY MCNEAL) BROOKE BURKE, DEREK HOUGH

— Let’s not kid each other: Monday's “Dancing With The Stars” final performance show set the stage for a Brooke Burke victory. Lance Bass who? Warren Sapp what? The judges didn’t have any questions about who deserved to win: it was Brooke. Would the audience back them up?

But first: lots and lots of stalling! What better way to kick off a remembrance of season seven than with an appearance by Cloris Leachman wandering aimlessly through the streets, asking strangers about their voting plans? Skirting the same line between self-parody and genuine self-delusion so often flirted with by the show itself, Cloris eventually wandered off, and it was time to start the show.

Alicia Keys, without provocation of any kind, performed “I Need You” with the help of a few dancers she stole from Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation” era, and then it was time to revisit some of the couples eliminated early. Jeffrey Ross reminded us that he is no dancer, Ted McGinley allowed us all to feel glad he didn’t bring about the cancellation of the entire show as he so often does, and Kim Kardashian proved that she had devoted all of three or four minutes to refreshing her own memory as to the details of the famous “Baby Got Back” dance.

And if you have forgotten Rocco DiSpirito, nothing about his return engagement would make you remember him.

Toni Braxton was unable to dance because of recent surgery, while Cloris Leachman was unable to dance because … well, because she is Cloris Leachman, but she tried anyway. Susan Lucci brought back a rather flat-footed paso doble, and Maurice Greene proved that he can still salsa and he can still wear orange.

As the midpoint of the show approached, Jeffrey returned (or perhaps re-returned) to roast the three finalists with surprising success, which might have been the first meritorious filler segment in the show’s history. (“What can be said about Lance Bass that hasn’t already been said about Clay Aiken?”) He pointed out Brooke’s rich fertility and Warren’s bald head, and that was it for the first hour.

Cody Linley returned to jitterbug once more, and that left the final three. Remember the final three? Remember when the show first named the final three? It was so long ago, seriously, that you may have had a different hairstyle.

The judges thought the information might have escaped you, so they treated everyone to lengthy reminders of what we have been told over and over again. Lance is most improved! Warren is entertaining! Brooke is the finest dancer! The show is more than half over and none of them have done anything!

Things finally got moving with Warren’s final dance, a replay of his “Funkytown” hustle that impressed the judges enough to land him a total of 27 points.

Lance and Lacey brought back their “Jim Dandy” jitterbug, except without the part where he kicked his shoe off. It was still a good routine, and it got them the 28 they needed to move ahead of Warren and Kym in the judging — still four points behind Brooke, and almost certain to fall another two points behind her when the judges served up her inevitable perfect scores.

So what did Brooke choose to do? She and Derek did their Viennese waltz. It was pretty, it was uninspiring, and it received perfect scores. Not exactly breaking news, but it sent Brooke off on a wave of Carrie Ann’s overwhelmed tears, with big leads over Lance and Warren. Samantha Harris wrapped up the segment by claiming that their waltz was incredibly emotional for everyone watching, and with 25 minutes to go, the conclusion seemed pretty obvious.

Finally, the time came to announce the third-place couple, which turned out to be Lance and Lacey, meaning their audience support didn’t turn out to be as good as Warren Sapp’s. Early guesses — including one made right in this space — that he would take the prize according to the existing script from past seasons simply collapsed under the weight of Brooke’s high scores and Warren’s bigger-than-believed fanbase.

And then: Miley Cyrus. She sings, kind of! She dances, kind of! She has great hair, definitely! Her song will fall out of your head thirty seconds after you hear it!

The final two teams paid each other a series of easily forgotten compliments, Tom Bergeron visited with the departed contestants sitting in the front row (two hours of show surely has room for seven seconds of Kim Kardashian pitching herself), and Tom swore that this time, he really meant it: the winner was about to be revealed. (To be Brooke Burke.) (Oh, sorry – spoiler alert!)

Finally, it was time for the reveal of the winner. Warren and Kym and Brooke and Derek stood across from each other, and Brooke practiced her “look surprised” face while Warren tried to stop compulsively winking. And the winner was … Brooke Burke! A marvelous win for the overdog.

Brooke’s victory is, in a way, a triumph for real dancing on the show. She had the best technique and the best scores all season. Still, it feels a little hollow to see a winner whose personality was quite this opaque for the majority of the season. She’s undoubtedly excited, just as she should be, but it’s easy to entertain the suspicion that she missed her own celebration while working to execute the post-victory trophy lift with flawless form.

Lance & Lacey...3rd Place? Please. Guess I won't be watching DWTS next year. Either that or I won't vote because my vote jinxes the person and they don't win. Lance & Lacey are the winners in my eyes anyway! Not a big surprise that Brooke and Derek won.

i'm not a DWTS fan at all... but my cousins are so i thought i'd check out the winner online.

but reading this article was hillarious!  linda holmes must despise the show and i'm not even sure why she was chosen to write the article to begin with.   this must be her way of giving her boss the finger!   LMFAO

    go linda! go linda!

I think Linda Holmes is extremely negative in this summary of the DWTS Finale.  If she disliked the show so much, why watch it?  Worse yet, why make us suffer through her comments.  For the many people who enjoy DWTS, her summary was a superb example of journalistic ineptitude...biased and nasty.

"Dancing with the Stars" is a pleasure to watch!  Would Linda Holmes prefer to be arguing with all of the politicians?  Why is she jealous of sixteen year old Miley Cyrus?  She sings, kind of, she dances, kind of.  Does Linda sing and dance and laugh all the way to the bank?

Why is Linda Holmes so negative?  She doesn't appear to be happy with her work!  Maybe she ought to write the script for "Dancing with the Stars" if she could do a better job, or better yet try to do a better job at writing her own article without taking the joy out of a pleasant television program.

Hmmm, sounds like sour grapes Linda!  Why did you even watch, if you knew the outcome.  Nope, it seems your prediction (published Monday, November 24) about Lance winning was way off base.  This article is very thinly veiled whinning about your pick losing.

Everyone that I have spoken to about the voting process has said the same thing. The phones were blocked or there was funny business going on with the voting, you were only allowed to vote once. You couldn't get in on the line if you voted for Warren or Lance. I hope that Brooke is not aware of how they cheated for her to win. I really don't believe that she was the viewer's choice. She was one of the better dancers, I am sure she has had some training.

Ok, Linda. We understood you were biased against Brooke before. Now we need to read another nasty and mean-spirited article from you. I'd say it was sour grapes at your favorite not getting chosen, but, really, you're always mean-spiritied and nasty. Is this what passes as good journalism these days - snarling and negativity rather than insight?

Some of the negative comments come from the fact that in past seasons,  judging was less biased.  Currently, they get their opinions formed early and stick to them without real considerations for the just performed dance.  For example: when the teflon couples do lifts, not noted; when the red-headed step-child contestants do lifts, it is to the woodshed of poor marks.  It was not until this season that this was blatently obvious, and I am suprised at how it took away from the enjoyment of the program through the last half of the season.  Most of us respond to lack of fairness.  I have watched all seasons; I consider myself a real fan, but that does not mean that I should remain gleefully uncritical when the show slips as it did this season.  The producers of the program need feedback from the fans and entertainment columnists so that they can self-correct if the program slips into some bad habits.  I did not agree with everything that Linda said, but she sure gave some things for improvement in future seasons so that DWTS does not get stale and lose audience.

Sounds like they are describing her performance in her previous marriage. hehe.

We all knew Brooke would win, but Lance got screwed.  I was very angry at the show for allowing Warren Sapp to get this far.  I feel it was rigged.  It's big money for football when the players win - except that the other footballers could dance.  Warren cannot.  The only reason he holds attention is so you can see whether he would actually make it through a routine without screwing up.  He did get better, but NOT better than Lance.  Lance should have come in 2nd.

SOC123.. I won't be watching anymore because the show obviously is rigged.  I have heard people complain about other reality shows being rigged but always thought they were crazy, until Monday.  I tried to vote for Lance, the line rang busy and finally I got through. Twice my call got through with the usual thanks for voting for and then on the third time my call was connected I got the message that I had reached my voting limit.  I only got through 2 times not 5.  So I decided I would try my cell phone.  It was connected once, the next time I got the message I had reached my limit.  At that point in time I realized it was futile, the winner had already been chosen by the judges.  Guess I will stick with the real dance shows from now on.

I will never, ever comprehend why anyone would watch "Dancing With The Has-Beens"  or would even remotely care about this insipid show.

As lame and void as TWTS was of any deep meaning it was great entertainment.

Still don't get the popularity of these vaccuous programs....booooooring! Glad this one is over for the year, but now its about time to suffer the parade of talentless hacks on Idol. I'm convinced the fix is in, and I for one am glad I have other things to do during the hack fests. Anyone this interested in this drivel needs a life...

Lighten up, people!  I thought what Linda wrote was funny and at least 80% true, and I don't know what you all were watching, but I thought Warren did a great job and he CAN dance.  I'd like to see some of you get out there and do what he did... Brooke is beautiful, sexy and talented, but oh, sooooooooo boring, and she didn't even go to thank her husband and give him a kiss when he's been so supportive of her, always there to watch his Princess!  And Derek reminds me of a puppy dog lapping up everything he could on the floor.  I know that Brooke was the best dancer, but after the finale I didn't feel good, wasn't... anything, like when Obama won, I felt sick even if I KNEW what the outcome would be.  Pass for next year!

Okay, maybe the producers of the show need some feed back, but anytime I have read Linda Holmes article regarding "Dancing with the Stars" looking for something exciting, I only felt depressed with all of the negative comments.  Why make insulting commets about the dancers that are not professtional dancers?  Why hurt peoples feelings when you have the opportunity to write and build up a person's self-esteem.  Why not write about the never ending commercials?  To be a writer is a gift.  What you write about should be and can be a greater gift.  I will continue to watch "Dancing with the Stars", a happy program no matter how much more they may need to improve, I just won't read Linda's articles unless she learns how not to belittle people.
