Deer gets revenge after hunter shoots him

SEDALIA — A hunter bagged a big buck on the second day of firearms season, but the kill caused him a lot of pain. Randy Goodman, 49, said he thought two well-placed shots with his .270-caliber rifle had killed the buck on Nov. 19. Goodman said the deer looked dead to him, but seconds later the nine-point, 240-pound animal came to life.

The buck rose up, knocked Goodman down and attacked him with his antlers in what the veteran hunter called "15 seconds of hell." The deer ran a short distance and went down, and died after Goodman fired two more shots.

Soon Goodman started feeling dizzy and noticed his vest was soaked in blood.

So he reached his truck and drove to a hospital, where he received seven staples in his scalp and was treated for a slight concussion and bruises.

I'm with Bambi.

It wasn't even a fair fight. I hope the hospital charges run in the hundreds. Maybe he'll think twice about his next hunt.

In all fairness we should not wish financial dredgery upon a human because he is a hunter. I agree it was not a fair fight, but some people in the mountain areas consume a fair amount of deer venison.

Uh, Shawn. Does eating something after you kill it make it ok? We could go far on this one. I'll refrain. But explain to me the necessity of killing for food in this country when there's a McDonald's on every corner? It's not as if he or his family would starve without this deer meat. This is a sport, let's not try and make a justification argument here.

If you kill for sport, what pulling the trigger on your gun leads to (hospital bills, accidents, injuries, animal attacks, etc) is your own damn fault. Needless to say, the hospital isn't responsible for informing this hunter that what he did was wrong. I agree with caroaber, maybe this will cause him to pause before he picks up the riffle next time.

Alot of people still eat the deer they kill.  I know, because I'm related to some.  Eating at McDonalds still relies on killing an animal.  Venison is going to be healthier than anything you eat there anyways.  Barbaric or not, an animal has to be killed in order to eat it.

In addition, in alot of places, hunting season exists in order to control the deer population.  If that didn't happen, the deer would be running out in the street causing car accidents.

Sure, I know because I'm related to some as well. My grandfather had his proud taxidermy deer heads mounted on the wall. It used to frighten me as a child. It still frightens me, but for different reasons.

My McDonald's comment wasn't a justification for vegetarianism, just merely that it was not NECESSARY for him to kill in order to eat. If you live off the land and that is your main source of food, it's not my place to tell you to live on twigs or whatever... The point was we kill enough animals for meat. This guy wasn't off to gather meat for his family dinner, he was hunting for sport.

Again, the justification for this argument is lost on me. We have too many people in this country, should we go off killing them all to control the population? Maybe the reason the deer run into the street causing car accidents is because we built freeways, houses and businesses on the land they once roamed freely. Is that their fault we've grown as a populace and now see them as a nuisance....or target?

Correct, but rarely does the burger jump back up and attack you in a bloody mess.

I never stated that he only survives off of deer meat, you should not put words in my mouth. Just because McDonald's offers cheap food does that mean a man does havea right to hunt? Like everyone else here said, McDonalds kills millions of cows each year.. Whats the difference?

I was here to try and defend the man that someone wished him harm/financial loss against. And all you are trying to do is push your PETA views upon me. Do i know for a fact that he was not trophy hunting? Of course not but I have never met a hunter that would throw away perfectly good deer venison.

I'll make you a deal you stop the slaughtering of millions upon millions of cows each year and get everyone to eat only fruits and vegetables I will join PETA myself. But until then please don't try to justify your point with another reference to animals being slaughtered... Kind of defeats the purpose! :)

I would gladly send you some deer jerky or bologna if you you want to send me some McDonalds gift certificates.. ::smirk::

Good point  - It seems that non hunters here only care about Bambi (large animals). Do they care about small creatures that are killed by other human activity -- not unless they see it, but then what do they do about it.  Vegetarians don't think about the bugs, squirrels, gophers, mice etc, killed by the farming process. This is a good example of an issue where there is going to be lots of name calling and no opinions changed.  Just to put it on record -- I am NOT a hunter but I do respect the opinion of hunters as well as the opinion of non hunters. Just don't try to tell me that killing a human should be the same as killing an animal -- (as has been mentioned by other posters)

Good for the deer!  If you can't kill a buck painlessly in a single shot, you deserve to get mauled by him!

Firearms season? funny how the AP chose to go with that instead of hunting season. News flash....There is no firearm season its a right.

It makes me sad that hunting is still considered an acceptable form of sport. To kill an innocent animal just for the adrenaline rush? Does it make you a bigger man/woman to kill? When a person kills an innocent person for the thrill, we call them sick and we lock them up. When a person kills an innocent animal for the thrill, we call it sport.

Explain the distinction here, because I don't see it.

Do you participate in any sport? Name any sport that doesn't harm ANY animals (or do you just care about big animals) --Do you not care if your activities harm animals -- just hunters activities? I'm just asking, I am not a hunter, I don't like burgers but I do kill gophers, mice and rats and I don't even eat them.  Almost every human activity harms SOME animal. Is it OK if it is not "sport" because I don't see the distinction.

That poor deer!! He shouldn't have shot the beautiful animal a 2nd time. That is nothing but murder. 15 minutes of hell my animal-loving butt! Good for an animal to finally be fighting back! Nobody should be hunting the poor deer.

Haven't any of you cold-hearted jerks ever watched Bambi in your pathetic meaningless lives? I doubt you have, or else you wouldn't be doing what you're doing. Maybe you should take the time to watch it, instead of murdering animals. Don't you have a heart? Animals have feelings too, as well as lives.

You aren't superior. You're just pathetic. You're a sad, lonely loser who deserved what you got. How would you like it, if you were shot down like that? Not twice, but a 2nd time. You wouldn't appreciate it. Think about how the deer feels. Just because it's an animal, and not a human, doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. I hope that one day, animal hunting will be banned.

And maybe, human hunting will be legal.

Courtney,

I don't call people names -- but you came close. How in the world can you feel bad for the "poor deer" and then advocate hunting people? WTF. This is just a silly story and I'm sure the hunter feels bad about having not killed the deer cleanly (and even worse since the deer kicked the crap out of him). Did you want him to walk away from a wounded animal? There are differing opinions on hunting just as there are opinions on every subject -- don't get so worked up on this one -- there are far more important issues to be concerned about. You know what they say about opinions -- just like as----es, everybody has one.  This hunter will be the butt of jokes around the campfire for years to come.

Obviously he was using the wrong caliber rifle. Everyone knows you don’t use a .270 in Missouri while hunting deer in mid-late November. The strong gravitational pull from the bright moon that time of month (in that local) will throw that specific bullets ballistic co-efficient off and will give a false sense of security when it inadvertently just temporarily incapacitates the fierce beast.

Right on !  Not only Bambi but people, haven't you people ever watched Veggie Tales???  You should not eat innocent vegetables.  Those poor cows they have working for Chik-fil-a have feelings too!  What about Chicken Little?  He saved his whole planet and you still want to eat chicken!  Don't get me started on all of you Nemo eating sea food lovers...  Animials have feelings!  Just watch TV and you will know!  I agree with PETA-BFH, the only answer is cannibalism.  That way we can rid the world of evil humans!  Go PETA-BFH!
