WASHINGTON — TON - Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was arrested by FBI agents Tuesday morning after being served with a federal arrest warrant, NBC News reported.

His arrest follows a long and highly publicized corruption investigation.

Blagojevich is due to appear in federal court later on Tuesday to face the charges.

Well well.  Another politician that is a crook.  I am sure there are a lot more like him (democrat) and all you have to do is look at the boosh administration (republicans) that have been caught with more that should be.

It doesn't matter what party these people are; they are politicians who run or in office for the money and greed.

To all of you who wish to make this a party thing I give you Duke Cunningham.
I am a resident of Illinois and can assure you that I know several things.
First I will tell you that Chicago dominates this state because the supreme court striped us of our little federal system wherein our house was elected based on population while our senate was elected by geographic areas.
Under that system those of us not in Chicago could moderate their power.
As a hated liberal I didn't chose to vote for Rod because of his political roots.
I also didn't vote for the republican because the party here is to the right of Attila the Hun.
I hope that if he is proven guilty that the judge hits him in the head with it but do understand that political power is used in the courts.

The pols in this state have built a system where it is almost impossible to not have to chose between tweedle Dee and tweedle Dum.
They are the highest payed and the most corrupt in this country, not to mention shameless.
Our best hope for good government here is for the prosecutors to jail so many of them that the people seeking to take their place are terrified at the certainty of going to jail for any corruption.

funny --the Dems here care about getting rid of crooked politicians. The repubs only care that he was named a Democrat in the article. .

In fact had it been a republican I'd wager the repubs would all be claiming how innocent he is and it's just the "liberal" media's slanted reporting. They would care less about any investigations into the matter.

How truly sad.

Chuck, maybe, but I'm also sure that if it were a republican that the libs would be going on that republicans are nothing but money grubbing SOBs with no care for the welfare of the state.

Stop acting like democrats are any better when the hammer falls. It just goes to show you where the slant is.

I wonder why Blagojevich thought he could bargain with Obama to begin with?  Blago said they're not willing to give him anything in return, so F them.  This shows negotiations were in progress.  Perhaps Blago and Obama  had similar dealings in the past?  Will we hear any more?  Will the reporters dig?  What will Blago say to save his own skin?  What will Obama do to keep him quiet?  Stay tuned...

Obama-hater #1: Gosh, how can we hang this on Obama, guys?

Obama-hater #2: Easy. It's his home state, well, other than Hawaii, dude. We'll just put that on him. Blagojevich's a Dem, just like Obama, and is from Illinois, just like Obama, and it was Obama's old Senate seat, too. Obama probably wanted to get some cash from it too. Hey, yeah! Maybe Blagojevich was promised he'd get something from Obama if he gave it to the person Obama wanted him to give it to! It's perfect, don't you see?! We couldn't get Obama on that "natural-born citizen" thing, but we'll get him on this!

Obama-hater #1: (grins) Yeah, it's perfect! And don't forget Rezko helped fund Blagojevich's campaign for governor, too! And he knew Obama!

Obama-hater #2: (returns grin) NOW you're getting it! Obama probably knew everything! Let's post all of this on the Newsvine boards! We'll get Obama yet!

Yeah, I can envision this crap even before I scroll these boards. Hate to disappoint you, but Fitzgerald (a Repub who I think would've been an EXCELLENT choice for Obama as Attorney General if not for Holder) didn't point any fingers at Obama or his staff. They had NO idea what Blagojevich was doing. See, Obama's kinda got other problems to deal with at this point, and I suspect trying to dictate to Blagojevich who should get his old Senate seat isn't exactly a high priority to him right now. He's got bigger fish to fry. Sorry.

But, hey, you Obama-haters can go at it all you want. It's what you do best anyway. To make you feel a little better, I certainly think Blagojevich, if these charges are true, and they seem to be, should step down IMMEDIATELY. He's a disgrace to his office. Yeah, he's a Dem, but if you've broken a law, party's not going to matter. He can join former Gov. (Repub) Ryan in the same jail cell. Have a good day!

MN Nick Pokee, I don't care if this gets me suspended but I must call a spade a spade and inform you that you are one $*$##-dumb-&%@*-redneck-racist-piece-of-&$@@-mother-%@@$%$.

So what in this post was racist? Was it that Pokee used the President-Elect's middle name, HUSSEIN? Am I a racist as well because I put it in all caps? Unfortunately the answer to both the latter questions is 'yes'. Anyone who disagrees with, lampoons, or takes a cheap shot at the(ir) messiah, is automatically declared a racist. The word 'racist' is a powerful sword that the left has wielded for a long time. Such abundant use of this weapon has blunted its once razor fine edge. At this pace it will be meaningless by the time Obama leaves office.

The tried and true, dyed-in-the-wool Bush backers were bad enough over the last eight years, but this is just shrill. The inauguration is still over a month away and then we have four more years of this. How fun.

Not to worry.  I'm sure President Elect O'man didn't really know Blagojevich.  They just attended a few meetings together.  Perhaps they were at the Illinois State House at the same time once in a while, but he never paid any attention to Blagojevich.  Politically, socially or friendship wise they had absolutely nothing in common.  O'man thought Blagojevich was a friend of the terrorist Bob Ayers and his wife and maybe of that known criminal Tony Rezko.

No surprise here. Typical Chicago style politics. I suspect a lot of stories about corrupt Democratic politicians will come out now that the election is over. MSNBC's first story on him didn't identify him as a Democrat, but I guess they had so many complaints that they "revised" the story to say he's a Democrat. Like I said, no surprise here.

It seems Al Capone's ghost still walks the Chicago streets and manifests itself in those who are easily corrupted. Democrat or Republican their soul is what's up for bid.

I'd really like to see a number of Independents in office. That's the change we need, Our two party system is archaic, corrupt  inept, and stagnant. We also need term limits. Most of these antiquated politicians have over stayed their usefulness. There should be an amendment to that effect to include a mandatory investigation for all officials seeking office. The same as is required of the FBI, IRS and CIA. as they will have access to National Security Information.

Do you honestly believe it is different in any other state? Or just better concealed?

What I would like to see is all politicians have to list all immediate family members, what and where they are employed at, how soon after the politician in question got to power did they get the job? My guess is a lot of people would be surprised, and not pleasantly.

My feeling is there is a lot more of this going on, but a much better job of concealing it, by both parties!

I think this is very upsetting, but you must realize that anytime you give someone power (in this case to choose a senate seat), corruption is bound to take place no matter which "party" they caucus with. With these tough economic times it becomes even more likely that corruption will take place. The Governor said himself(according to FBI reports), that he needed to consider his family and that he is "financially" hurting. I think Illinois and other states that give "one figure" the power to choose their state senator in the event that it opens in between terms should really try to pass legislation to appoint a committee that over sees or even facilitates the process of filling the empty senate seat.

P.S: All posts that are trying to argue whether Republicans or Democrats are more at fault or even in some posts, who would complain more in the event tables were turned should be deleted.

We have crooks across BOTH party lines- he and his conspirators were caught and justice will be served.  I am waiting for the next smear to be aimed at Obama for being involved somehow since it is HIS senate seat this guy was aimed to have made the profit from by putting in a replacement of his choosing.  MTF I'm sure.

Why don't you get someone to read the article for you as you don't seem to be able to read more than a couple of sentences before opening your mouth and shoving your foot down your throat.

The first sentence in the second paragraph, numbly

A 76-page FBI affidavit says the 51-year-old Democrat was intercepted on court-authorized wiretaps over the last month conspiring to sell or trade the vacant Senate seat for personal benefits for himself and his wife, Patti.

Read the article again and it won't take you long to find the reference that he is a democrat. It's in the first line of the second paragraph. Try actually reading the article instead of just skimming over it to find something to b**** about.

It clearly says he's a Democrat in this paragraph, which was at the top of the story.  I guess you can't read when you're too busy hatemongering.

The article was edited after the OP's comments to include the party affiliation. It DID NOT mention that he was a Democrat first thing this morning. Stop jumping to conclusions when you come into a conversation this late in the game.

What a sad state of affairs for the people of Illinois.  Whatever his political affiliation, he should spend time in jail.   The American political system should not be for sale.  But I am waiting for the conservative talk shows to tie this into Pres. elect Obama.  Anybody have a stop-watch?

Unless the article has been edited since first posted the article DOES say he is a Democrat, in the fourth paragraph:

A 76-page FBI affidavit said the 51-year-old Democrat was intercepted on court-authorized wiretaps over the last month conspiring to sell or trade the vacant Senate seat for personal benefits for himself and his wife, Patti.

Unless, as I said, the article was edited since you read it.

If you had actually read the article before jumping on your Republican bandwagon, you'd see under the picture it states "Democratic politician" and in the story it states "51-year old Democrat".  What is it you want them to do?  Put in the headlines and every line of the story that he's a DEMOCRAT?

First and foremost the guy is a crook - the absolute worst kind of politician.  I hope he and the REPUBLICAN (like that?) former Governor Ryan share a prison cell together.  Wonder what kind of rotten, corrupted deals they could conjure up - and who else would get caught in their evil web.

What a pathetic human being.  He really makes me sick.  Obama gives us hope and then from the same state, the governor tries to sell Obama's seat.  I hope they throw the book at him.

I'll be curious what Obama has to say - probably can't say much until the governor is at least charged...

As a resident of Illinois I can say the culture of the state is as corrupt as it gets.  I would further state that no politician gets anywhere in this state unless they have made peace with and are willing to go along with the power brokers of which ever party they subscribe.   I have for some time questioned the potential for reform from a politician who has had no predisposition to reform the state and local government he was a part of for many years.  The partisan defenders will turn a blind eye to the political climate and policy that shaped their candidate and his association with the leaders and power brokers that have given him special treatment as he has become a more important member of the ruling class here in Illinois.  As the power brokers from Chicago slowly slime their way to Washington I hope the country is spared from a big dose of Chicago or Illinois style government.  We should watch them very closely.

It was said doing the election that Chicago was a corrupt political city. What other is needed to prove it? Old man Daley ran the city for years and was a crook himself. The Mafia shaped Chicago and ran the entire state.

This latest news is nothing out of the ordinary. Democrat or Republican, Chicago is the political center of corruption. It's the arena where you win by hook or crook.

We probably will see some changes.  Like remembering the Geneva convention and our own Constitution - not holding people in prison as long as the President wants without ever charging them with anything.  Arresting people on mere suspicion.

We will have some transparency in government.  And yes, I believe we will see some clean up.  We'll have attorneys that will prosecute and not worry about poltical issues.

I really don't think that with all of the problems Obama is facing right now with our economy in the dump and thousands and thousands of unemployed Americans and bailouts of banks and the Big 3 Automakers plus still trying to get his Cabinet in place and learn/do all the things a president elect does in normal conditions that he is really involved in "selling" his Senate seat.

Step back.  Take a breath.  Think about it.

Exactly, Randall. The only part Obama seems to have played in this is, well, nothing, other than Blag calculating with his own aides how they can blackmail PE Obama into appointing Blag and his wife an Ambassadorship. And if PE Obama wouldn't go for that, Blag calculated how he would take the Senate seat himself because he wanted more power and money.

Interesting that Rahm Emanual is who blew the whistle on Gov, Blag. While Blag may think PE Obama is a "m@th*rF*$cr," Blag obviously tried to swindle the wrong dude. Obama is a stand-up guy and Blag made a huge mistake.

Rightly Amused:  and all those accusations that Obama is somehow not a natural born citizen are so legitimate the the Supreme Court refused to hear it.  Also the case had nothing to do with where he was born but argued that only someone born here who has two parents that are citizens can be considered a natural born citizen.  Of course this argument is absurd and again the Supreme Court felt that as well.  So please stop with your slander.

The article was about governor attempting to profit from selection of Obama's replacement in senate, and it's about chicago politics, so it does involve PE obama.

to George, All i've seen in the stories of the beginning of Obama's political career, he made his opponents disappear with breaking stories that embarassed and basically disqualifyed them. Same thing happened here with the governor. Obama wanted a certain person to be appointed, Blagojevich didn't agree and obama had him taken down. Who's to say that's not what happened.

See story about his first senate run in Chicago"

During the May 31 edition of CNN Newsroom, anchor Don Lemon teased reporter Drew Griffin's "Special Investigations Unit" report about Sen. Barack Obama's 1996 run for the Illinois state Senate by asserting, "[I]f his very first political campaign is any indication, the Illinois senator isn't opposed to getting a little dirty." As Lemon spoke, on-screen text read: "Obama Gets Dirty." The report -- which also aired on the May 29 edition of CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 -- and a related CNN.com article stated that Obama ran unopposed in the Democratic primary race for the state Senate seat representing Chicago's 13th District because he successfully challenged his potential Democratic opponents' petitions to appear on the ballot.

Or from October 2nd: The Obama campaign is demanding that the Justice Department bring criminal charges against a non-profit advocacy organization and one of its donors because they have the audacity to sponsor a television ad criticizing the close connection between Obama and unrepentant former terrorist William Ayers.

The campaign is also threatening the license of television stations; and is enlisting state law enforcement officials for partisan prosecutions, all for running political ads that Obama claims are misleading and false.

These actions should cause every American to ask, can Obama be trusted with the powers of the Justice Department, the Federal Election Commission and the Federal Communications Commission? This is a man who wants to criminally and economically punish opponents for engaging in political speech that is the heart and soul of the First Amendment.

              Apr 28 2008
When Barack Obama decided he wanted to run for the Illinois Senate in 1996, he ensured his candidacy by successfully challenging the nomination petitions of his four competitors. Obama's entry into federal politics was also marked by competitors falling by the wayside. He won both the 2004 primary and general election for the US Senate "after tough challengers imploded when their messy divorce files were unsealed," the Chicago Tribune writes.

The NYT reports that "the Tribune reporter ... acknowledged in print that the Obama camp had 'worked aggressively behind the scenes' to push the story.

If you bothered to read the story before attacking Obama, you would have seen that the governor said on tape that Obama had selection he would like for his replacement but that all he was giving the governor was appreciation.  Is that illegal?  It sounds like good judgment instead.

You can say all you will but this does not apply any guilt to Obama.  You can make up what all "facts" you want - so many of you continue with your lies and fabrications.  The fact remains that the FBI has said there are not ties to Obama.

Born in Hawaii, lived for awhile in Indonesia, went to school in California, New York, etc.  Finally went to Chicago to be a community organozer and ultimately (after law school) a Constituional law professor. But Palin says he really didn't have any thing to do really as a community organizer, so how could he possibly have been involved in Chicago politics? As a professor, I can tell you from being married to an ex college instructor, the only "politics" you have time for is school politics. Give it a rest! Fitzgerald has already said ther is no evidence that Barack knew anything, let alone participated in any of this skullduggery. Hate to bring it up, but there is more on McCain re: the Keating five, some of whom were Dems. He got his hands slapped and that was probably appropriate, given the facts of the case. It in no way approached what Blagojevich was up to!

              Fife Symington (governor)

as cynthia sue said: "Fitzgerald has already said ther is no evidence that Barack knew anything, let alone participated in any of this skullduggery."

I'll put out this, then I'll do my best to wait till after the inauguration to criticize "that one."

1)Obama sat in Rev Wright's Church for 20 yrs and had no idea that the reverend preached hatred to whites and the united states as a whole.

2)Obama worked as attorney for slum lord, Tony rezco, who was skimming govt money off the top right into his pocket, but Barack had no idea that was going on.

                3) Obama was friends with Bill Ayers and one of Obama's stories was that he didn't realize who Ayers was (just some guy in the neighborhood). Later he changed that story to say that he thought Ayers had been rehabilitated.

JERUSALEM – Sen. Barack Obama's office engaged in six months of negotiations with a company controlled by convicted criminal Tony Rezko back in the mid 2000's to lobby the U.S. government to push through a nixed $50 million contact to train Iraqi security personnel at a site in Chicago.

The contract was awarded to Rezko's company while Aiham Alsammarae, a long-time, close Rezko friend and a contributor to Obama's campaign, served as Iraq's U.S.-appointed electricity minister, the senator's office confirms.
Rezko was a major Obama fundraiser and associate for two decades.

Alsammarae also awarded another Rezko-controlled operation as part of a $150 million contract to construct a 250-megawatt electricity plant in Iraq.
The information raises questions into the nature of Obama's relationship with multiple deals made by Iraq's Electricity Ministry while Alsammarae was in charge. Obama has ties to Alsammarae and to the recipients of several of the massive contracts Alsammarae handed out.

While he was the electric czar of Iraq for the Coalition Provisional Authority from mid-2003 until mid-2005, Alsammarae granted the $50 million contract to train Iraqis to guard electrical plants to Companion Security, a start-up reportedly controlled by Rezko, his partner Daniel Mahru and a front man, Daniel Frawley, a former Chicago policeman. Frawley has multiple civil court judgments against him for his alleged failure to pay millions in outstanding bills.

The plan was to fly about 150 Iraqis to a site in Illinois for security training, which reportedly would include the use of AK-47 assault rifles.

The contract with Rezko's group was signed April 18, 2005, one month before Alsammarae left his governmental post.

But Iraq's new electricity minister aborted the deal, complaining the Companion contract was too expensive, according to a U.S. embassy official in Baghdad who spoke earlier this year to the Chicago Sun-Times.

In the spring of 2006, Frawley and his company reportedly reached out to Chicago politicians, including Obama and Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, to bring pressure to revive the deal, arguing the business would be good for the state.

Blagojevich's office and Illinois Homeland Security reportedly helped by offering an Army depot in Savanna in western Illinois as a site for Companion to conduct the Iraqi training.

Frawley then reportedly reached out to Obama, who in 2006 was a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, engaging in six months of dialogue petitioning the Illinois senator to write a letter introducing the Rezko-connected Companion company to senior Iraqi officials. Frawley met with Seamus Ahern, who runs Obama's Moline, Ill., office.

But Obama, who has denied doing political favors for Rezko, LATER CLAIMED HE DID NOT KNOW Rezko was involved with Companion.

                5) BO had someone he wanted Gov blagojevich to select as his senate replacement, but Blago was trying to make a few bucks by picking someone else. Obama apparently had no knowledge of this.

So many want to say how intelligent BO is but with all his associations with shady characters, and him not knowing anything about their activities, makes me think he is either EXTREMELY naive or else lying. Neither of which is good for the president of United States.

Puh Leeze!  Your conservative politicians made a gigantic mess and now the liberals have to go in and clean it up, just like after the Hoover administration.  As you conservatives so succinctly pointed out in 2000, we won, you lost. Deal with it.

Shocking that the governor's political party is not mentioned.  Had he been a Republican, the story would have been "Republican Illinois Governor Blagojevich arrested by FBI".

A 76-page FBI affidavit says the 51-year-old Democrat was intercepted on court-authorized wiretaps over the last month conspiring to sell or trade the vacant Senate seat for personal benefits for himself and his wife, Patti.

If one were to keep score it's pretty even between both corrupt parties.  However, the democrats do win the hypocrite award.  The bashing that Alaska got for corruption came right before the Louisiana and Illinois scandals.  Pelosi is queen following her speech about the sun cleaning out all the corruption,  Then she wents quiet on any democrat or union messes.

We live in a corrupt TWO party system.  George Washington was right,  The parties take care of themselves first and a big government - their power base - second.  What amazes me is how many take sides with either corruption.  Fools are born that way I guess.   Obama will distance himself from this as this strikes very close to home.

Please stop associating people with party affiliates.  It doesn't matter what party a person belongs to, what church they go to, what career they have, etc., a person is a person....you know, human being.   Whether a person is demo, repub, baptist, catholic, jewish, black, white, hispanic, and the list goes on and on, some type of corruption and greed abounds within one's self.  It's just that some people's lust and desire is much more deeper than others.  Stop judging lest you be judged.  Not one of us is without some form of sin.  The Illinois governor got caught in his evil deeds and he should be dealt with accordingly, simple as that.  It's time to focus on bigger and better things, people.  Let's all clean up our own backyards first before trying to clean up someone's else.

Exact same sentiment expressed by George Patton regarding Nazis, " The Nazi Party is just a political party like being a Democrat in the States". Politcal parties and their affiliations do mean something. They have to or its all worthless. A person may not agree with every plank in their parties platform, the person may in fact be a member of one party just to vote against another party, but it gives you an idea where there heads at.

American Vet, You should be ashamed of yourself for your disrespect to our next president. I assume you are a conservative.  (Apologies if I am mistaken).  All I have ever heard from conservatives is that you must respect the office. I guess that only applies if your candidate won.  If people slam Bush, it is because of his actions, he got the benefit of the doubt before he assumed office, in-spite of 2 very suspicious election results.  The ironic thing is, Bush did very little to nothing to help vets and Obama will. When he does, will you apologize and address him with the respect the office deserves?

                      wrong on all counts.

1-a military needs experienced officers and nco's.

2-they were the lower echelons when the dem president stripped the military of a significant part of its capabilities. that, and we were attacked  6 times with no repercussions for the perps.

3-the last thing officers and nco's worry about is accountability. it's ingrained in their character, for the most part. they have a very clear understanding of legal and illegal orders.

well Act2, let me know when Obama breaks his first 100 laws and commits his first war crimes, then we'll talk...

President Elect Obama has not taken the oath of office yet. As soon as he does I will gladly support him as our Commander in Chief. Until he does he is a non-starter in any national affairs. He has done absolutely nothing yet as President of the United States because he can not until Jan. 21, 2009.

On that day the clock starts and I hope he excels in his position. However my gut tells me "meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

As for your comment,Hamlet, I received my GED in 1989, jopined the Army Reserve in 1990 and served proudly for the next ten years. I used the GI Bill to get my degree in 2004. Not everyone who drops out is a moron. Some of us are just a bit lazy and need a taste of reality to show us the way. :)

Neo-cons lost......get over it and let's all hope that Obama's presidency is one of the best ever, just I wished for Bush even though I voted against him (although that wish certainly didn't come true).

And minorities went heavily into the Obama camp. Blacks, 96 percent Obama to 3 percent McCain; Latinos, 67 percent Obama to 30 percent McCain; and Asians, 63 percent Obama to 34 percent McCain.

The problem progressives face is that not all of this energy is transferred to other offices on the ballot. A recent EMILY's List survey conducted by Garin-Hart-Yang Research Group shows that 65 percent of younger people believe whoever is elected President will make "a lot of difference" in their lives; this number drops to 32 when asked about Governor and 26 percent when asked about Congress. There is a serious risk of drop-off among newly energized voters -- voters who show up to support Obama, but fail to complete the rest of the ballot. Nationally, approximately 15 percent of voters fail to complete their ballot. In recent research, GQR looked at drop-off ballot voters, voters who indicated they may not finish the ballot. They accounted for 13 percent of the electorate, but this number increased sharply among younger voters, African Americans, lower income, and less educated voters. In fact, 59 percent were either Democratic or lean-Democratic voters. What this means is that from one-fifth to one-quarter of the most progressive voters may not complete their ballot in November.

Well guess what people--blacks have been voting overwhelmingly democratic for the past 50 years, so why should they have changed their vote this time around?  Obama won, deal with it.

What do you think black people should have done? Should they have crossed over to vote republican in overwhelming numbers for the first time in 50 years?  You tell me, since you know so much.

Now look, I did not vote for McCain or Obama. I did vote independent, and I voted my entire ticket based on research for my area. On election day I personally witnessed:

                            • Numerous people who voted just the top of the ticket (white and non-white). I know this because the ballot collectors pointed out they were turning in incomplete ballots. None of them went back to finish voting.
                            • College kids, voting, who asked the precinct volunteers where they could find information about the candidates.

If I witnessed this in my little town, imagine what went on in the rest of the US .

                            • Term limits, hah. We have built in term limits, they are called voters.
                            • Gathering and making the best informed decision possible, hah. We have journalists to force feed us their agenda.
                            • Partisanship, hah. The founding fathers knew a two party system would doom their blood.
                            • Honesty, hah. Paying them only promotes greed.
                            • Clean house, hah. We had that chance.
                            • Hope and Change, hahahahahahaha.

I was put off by the unrealistic support for Mr Obama during the campaign and the lack of scrutiny of his political roots.  I don't expect his followers to see the potential down side of a product of a corrupt machine so I hope I am wrong about his crew and his lack of resolve in cleaning up his party and his home town and his home state. Lets hope the corruption will be cleaned and business as usual will become a  memory.,

Congressman gets jail for drunken driving

Judge: N.Y. Rep. Vito Fossella was drunk enough to deserve 5-day sentence

                              The Associated Press
                              updated 4:37 p.m. ET, Mon., Dec. 8, 2008

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Disgraced New York Rep. Vito Fossella has been sentenced to five days in jail for drunken driving.

Judge Becky Moore decided Fossella was so drunk he met the legal threshold for a five-day stint in jail. Fossella's May 1 arrest led to revelations he had fathered a child through an extramarital affair.

Buffeted by questions about his personal secrets, Fossella chose not to seek re-election and will leave Congress next month.

Fossella was arrested after running a red light on May 1 in a Virginia suburb of Washington, and convicted of drunken driving in October. Under Virginia law, a driver who registers a blood alcohol content of 0.15 or higher must serve five days behind bars. Police say Fossella's blood alcohol content was 0.17.

                              Hi Bob,

Actually, they mention his party affiliation TWICE...

(headline) - Judge: N.Y. Rep. Vito Fossella was drunk enough to deserve 5-day sentence

(first line) - ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Disgraced New York Rep.Vito Fossella has been sentenced to five days in jail for drunken driving.

One or the other could mean "Representative," but it's probable that MSNBC meant them as "Republican."  Since the article mentions him as a congressman, but doesn't state he is a member of the House of Representatives, and given MSNBC's track record, it's more likely they meant "Republican," although they can always protest their innocence.

"Rep"=Representative.   Media commonly does not mention D's, but focuses on R's much more.  You can say it is not so, but I have watched this bias for three Presidential elections and in between; there is bias in media.   People will have to do their own research, and then get it around by internet, and word of mouth.   Major stations are on the take, just as Dan Rather and his fake document scandal.

"Rep." is meant to indicate Representative, just as "Sen." is meant to abbreviate Senator.  That Representative and Republican both begin with "rep" is often misconstrued.  Generally, if not spelled out, the party affiliation follows the persons name in parentheses, as in Rep. Vito Fossella (R), the New York House of Representatives member representing NY's 13th District.

For the record, I'm able to vote for members of any party, depending on whom I believe to be the best candidate.  Some of you just need to relax about party affiliation sometimes and not take things quite so personally.

Regarding any news articles about Congresscritters, as far as good journalism goes, i would expect some basic information about them including their State, their District number, and their Party affiliation, at the minimum.

Ben's Dad, Are you that ignorant, narrow-minded and blind to reality? Rep. means Representative, just as Sen. means Senator, V.P. means Vice President. and Pres. means President!!!  Just because you want to slam MSNBC as being "liberal" doesn't change abbreviations!! The party affiliation appears after the politicians name usually with one letter i.e.   (D), (R), (I). They don't mention Fossella's party at all, just his title.

It depends.  Are you that "ignorant, narrow-minded and blind to reality" to believe that MSNBC wouldn't do such a thing?

Actually, I think you proved my point.  MSNBC DIDN'T include the (R) abbreviation because they meant "Rep." to be taken as "Republican."  I was willing to concede that it may have meant "Representative," but you convinced me otherwise.

                                Thanks for the assist!!!

If Blagojevich was a Republican I'm certain his party affiliation would have been mentioned in the article's first paragraph. Way to go MSNBC & Associated Press. Love to see you continue your tradition of unbiased political newscoverage.

But mentioning it in the first line of the SECOND paragraph isn't good enough for you?

Have him share a cell with ex LA gov Edwin Edwards (D) unless Bush agrees to pardon the balance of his sentence of course. in which case maybe he can ask to bunk with William Jefferson instead.

Well Erik, it looks like ole Rev. Wright may have hit the nail on the head, that America's chickens have come home to roost. It is indeed disheartening and pathetic to think that the pulpit prophet wannabe could be so accurate. You have to wonder when Blegojevich crawled into the Chicago political bed whose willy he was holding to get where he is?

Was I the only Illinois voter that was concerned about our Governor picking Pres-Elect Obama's senate seat?  Why can't this state elect a Governor that is incapable of breaking the law?  It's not about politics - it's about ethics - when these politians are elected - all of them - will be put in a position to act ethically or not.  I've thought Blagojevich should have been impeached long ago.  At least now we don't have to be concerned with what he's involved with next!

A 76-page FBI affidavit says the 51-year-old Democrat was intercepted on court-authorized wiretaps over the last month conspiring to sell or trade the vacant Senate seat for personal benefits for himself and his wife, Patti.

A 76-page FBI affidavit says the 51-year-old Democrat was intercepted on court-authorized wiretaps over the last month conspiring to sell or trade the vacant Senate seat for personal benefits for himself and his wife, Patti.

                                                        Second paragraph plain as day.

All I can tell you is that as you can see from the entire number of posts above from both sides that obviously it wasn't there when the story initially broke (it wasn't there when I fist read the story around 8:35 Central Time) . Most of us simply googled the answer to find out what party he represented but it seems that to many it is a sticking point. Yes that was part of the article that was update along with quit a bit more text added. It wasn't important when the news broke and the writer obviously updated the story as more became available. It really shouldn't matter in the first instance what party he represented anyways.

Does it really matter?  Who cares... I just want a HUGE example made of this guy.  Hopefully that will send a message and if not it will be entertaining at the very least.

Unfortunatley I will have to hold it for 4 more years. And you helped put this MORON in office. He's not in power yet and already things are exploding around him.

                                                                      #21.9 - Tue Dec 9, 2008 10:24 PM EST

IMO, this is the tip of a very large, very ominous iceberg.    Keep watching!  Which will it be, rearranging the deck chairs or going for the life boats?

You can bet if they sent you a rebate check for $100.00 it would cost you $200.00 in additional windfall taxes at the end of the year.

I don't think anybody's saying Republicans don't break the law, nor are they saying it shouldn't be broadcast.  The point is that when a Republican breaks the law, the media IMMEDIATELY points out the person's party affiliation, and usually repeats it several times in a single article.  When a Democrat breaks the law, IF it is mentioned at all, the person's party affiliation is usually buried in the article, and usually they will be referred to as a "Democratic" politician, not a Democrat.

Ted Stevens was re-elected given his recent conviction for fraud. Not a word was said about president-elect Obama's soon to be vacant senate seat. It seems to me there is more than enough proof to show that government corruption comes in all parties, especially in Illinois. Perhaps Gov. Blagojevich and Gov. Ryan can have adjoining cells.
