Scoop: Tom Cruise skips son’s first film premiere

— “Seven Pounds” is his son Connor’s first film, but Tom Cruise opted not to attend the premiere in L.A. Dec. 16.

The reasoning for skipping 13-year-old Connor’s big-screen debut, in which he plays a younger version of Cruise pal Will Smith? Cruise opted to stay in New York to continue the publicity blitz for his film “Valkyrie.”

“As you know, Tom and Will are great friends,” his rep Cheryl Maisel said. “Tom is in New York on a publicity tour for his movie.”

That much is obvious, but why not support Connor, who was specifically invited to attend the festivities along with some of the other kids in the film?

“It comes as such a surprise,” says a Cruise source. “When Connor was filming (‘Seven Pounds’) Tom was so excited and proud of him. It’s sad Tom didn’t fly out for the evening. He could have missed one night of publicity to support Connor and Will.”

It wouldn’t be the first time Cruise did a cross-country sprint: last December he flew from L.A. to New York and back to support Smith at his “I am Legend” premiere.

Baldwin staying home for inauguration
In the midst of an online chat with Washington Post readers, Alec Baldwin revealed that he’ll be staying put on Jan. 20 instead of taking part in President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration festivities.

“No, I'm not attending the inaugural,” Baldwin said. “I went to the Clinton one in '93 and I think the only thing worse than navigating Washington during the inaugural is the Super Bowl. So I intend to stay home and watch it on television, and I'm sure it will be just as enjoyable.”

J.Lo and Marc canoodle through rumors of trouble
Unlike Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez doesn’t have her mom shooting down rumors of marriage trouble: Lopez and hubby Marc Anthony shared a romantic dinner together at Luau in Beverly Hills Tuesday night.

The couple took a break from diaper duty with twins Max and Emme, snuggling and sneaking in kisses while feeding each other Wagyu Kobe meatballs.

Lopez's rep earlier shot down rumors that Lopez and Anthony were having marital troubles, calling them "absolutely not true."

Romo boots the roommates
Us Weekly followed up on their story that Jessica Simpson moved into her beau Tony Romo’s Irving, Texas, home.

Apparently, that made things a little crowded, since Romo’s got roommates.

Us says that the living situation has changed.

“His roommates moved out,” a source told the magazine. “But they still come over to hang out and play video games.”

What's Wrong With Hazlett's Column Today:

1. Tom Cruise. My God Hazlett. If you're not ignoring our interests then you're engaging in a) paid-promotion for holiday movies; b) planting items paid for by studios; or c) ignoring items truly worthy of your (our) attention. You've previously reported what seem are any and all items possibly related to the Christmas Nazi. At every step we've been unequivocal in our condemnation. NOTHING has changed. If you want to write about Cruise - you must either interview him yourself AND come away with Cruise outing himself, or STOP this inane ramble. Using his kid as a ruse for an item in your column is, really, beneath you my dear.

2. Alec Baldwin. We love 30 Rock, we loved his Safer interview on "60 Minutes," he amuses us - but reporting that Balwin will, like 99.99999% of your readers, be watching the inaugural on TV (no doubt on his Pioneer Elite 100" 1080p plasma) is not a "Scoop." This item wasn't worth the time it took your intern to input into a computer.

3. Gwenyth/J.Lo/Anthony. Ho boy. I don't remember reading about Gwenyth in your musings anywhere - is this your idea of titillating us with gossip we don't care about? And we just LOVE how you promulgate a rumor about J.Lo and her hubby, and in the next sentence shoot it down (sort of). Did YOU see them "canoodling?" I didn't think so. So why tell us? If you read it or watched this item on E! - you MUST properly attribute it. Did you SLEEP through your journalism classes at Columbia?

4. Tony Romo. Oh my GAWD. Three snaps and a big hiss on this one girlfriend. Simpleton eh, ah I mean Simpson moved in with Romo and his roommates moved out? I don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight, laying awake wondering what the conversation was like when Romo told his cribmates his canoodling bimbo was moving in - and they had to go.

Did they ask him to reconsider? Will she do his laundry? Will she attend his next home game - and will fans boo her again?. Like sands in the hour glass..... Please ask Mika if she's has any Ambien to spare - I've got the vodka. I NEED my rest - as you can plainly read.

BRING ME THE HEAD OF THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF US WEEKLY

You get a C- for this one Hazlett.

I could EAT pen and paper and PUKE a better column.

Randy from Maine.

Tom skips son's premire. Well what do you expect, when selfish people have to make a choice between themselves and their child, or others, the self ego comes in full force.

I wish you judgemental people would leave this beautiful human being alone.  It is not like Ton Cruise has done anything to harm anybody.  Maybe he has responsibilities to the backers of this movie to promote it?  Which all of you haters should understand missing games, dance recitals or cheerleeding competitions etc. because i bet you have missed a few events of your loved ones.  Everytime you point the finger at someone make sure there are not any pointed back at you.

I totally agree with Kimberly.  Gossip columnists and the people who compliment or criticize them are some of the most judgemental people in the world.  It's not the kind of complimentary mention a studio would want seen much less pay for being run.  Tom Cruise is probably very proud of his son's first film and the sort of people who would fault him for not attending the premiere, well, they are just the sort of people who need to do things like that for whatever reason.  Whatever.

I think he did not come to his son's premire because this is his son's chance to shine.  Just think, what if your dad was a superstar and this was your first big break?  What if you were always under your fathers shadow?  Would you want your father to come and take away that chance to step in the spotlight?  Paparrizzis and gossip news like this website wouldn't even give connor a chance to shine.  All the negiative media would do is write about your father.  You would not even get a mention.

I think Tom did the most respectable thing as a father, allow his son to be a young man.  How can you be mad at that.

Bravo, pilaar. Let the young man shine and let this hopeless wreck of a "journalist" burn out. Go back to your valium and chardonnay, sweetheart; you are so reaching and the "let's knock around the megastar" train left the station soooooooo long ago. That story line is so far past tired it's six feet under.

I don't get it.  All week Cruise has been trying to improve his public image yet he cannot take a night off to attend his son's first film.  As a dad with a son I would have moved heaven or hell to have been there if at all possible.

I agree with you brent that the average person would have attended his son or daughter's event.  But these people live a diffrent lifestyle.  I read The Associated Press and it stated that Tom has been around for majority of all his session for this role.  We cannot belive this one sided story we have to hear from Connor.  Maybe he wanted to do this on his own.  You know sons like  to show thier fathers they can do it on thier own.  I bet you Tom is just as proud as you are of your son.

I dissagree, I think he is allowing his son to shine.  Like a mother in New York City who tells thier kids to find there way home to make them depend on themselves.  I think Tom is showing his son how to be a man in the entertainment indusrty.  How to stand on his own two feet.  Also I agree with Pilaar.kila.  Tom has been getting so much negative press it would not help his son if he attended his premire.  Media loves to spark negitive news around him even though he makes action pack movies.

Tom Cruise is all about himself, and I for one am sick of it.

I could care less about what movie he is in. If he's in it, I don't want to see it!!!!

His interview with Matt made me a firm believer that he only thinks of himself!

I don't care if he's trying to polish his image or not!

cruise doesn't like it when the lights aren't on him. Plus, appearing next to his 13 year old son only points up the fact of how old cruise really is and he can't let that happen now, can he?

Cruise made an effort to attend the premiere of Will Smith's "I Am Legend", but didn't show the same support to his son?  I bet he wouldn't have done that if it was Suri.

Nicole is no longer the residential parent - I think he took this from her.  And she doesn't have a real choice in the matter.   He is a powerful, narcissistic person with some manic tendencies. She was not enthused with Scientology anymore ( which would mean she was a Potential Trouble Source/Suppresive person for Tom is his Scientology journey and thus their relationship ended.  I'm sure they stay friendly for PR purposes.  Watching all of the positive spin now is disgusting.  This is the FIRST  negative thing I have heard about him.

When we take what's said in these rags as gospel we're walking a thin wire. Did it ever occur to this reporter or anyone else that maybe Connor didn't want dad at his premier. Connor has been around the media spectacle of his dad his whole life. Maybe they asked him what he wanted and he said "will you please not come?" Maybe Connor realized that the only way this would be his premier is if Dad and Katie and Mom and Keith all stayed away. I don't see this as a lack of support. I see this as a loving and supporting dad who wants his son to be happy and have his own moment in the spotlight. He trusts Will Smith implicitly to take care of him so it's okay. I'm sure it was torture to not be there but that's the sign of a true loving father, when he can do what his child needs not what he wants. C'mon y'all it's Christmas can't we be a little positive??

Tom is a loving man.  I met his family and son.  All this Gossip is just to create news for people to read.  We Americans love gossip so much that TV is not even the same.  There are gossip reality shows.

Tom has been creating amazing movies for over 25 years.  Even his son is following in his footsteps.  Tom had been reported to have his kids with him on many of his sets.  He has even drove son to auditions.  Despite how the media trys to depict him, he is a good father.

Yes!  Congrats to Connor!  I also heard that his dad Tom Cruise have been very supportive.  Someone said earlier what if Connor did not want his day to come?  Connor is growing into a man and needs his own identity not to classified as Tom Cruise's son.  It seems that he is working to make his own name.  I know Tom should be proud of that.   Shame on you media for not giving us a full story and  just gossip.  What happen to real news coverage?  Has it been tarnished by gossip?
