Iraqi pleads guilty to spying for Saddam Hussein

BALTIMORE — An Iraqi living in Maryland has pleaded guilty to spying for former dictator Saddam Hussein's government.

U.S. Attorney Rod Rosenstein says U.S. troops found documents in Iraq that helped make the case against 67-year-old Saubhe Jassim Al-Dellemy.

According to his plea Monday, Al-Dellemy shredded documents at the Iraqi Embassy in Washington that identified Iraqi intelligence agents working in the U.S.

Al-Dellemy faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison when he's sentenced in March. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to act as an agent for a foreign government.

At least a dozen people have been charged by the Justice Department since the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq with acting as illegal agents for Saddam's government or his intelligence service.
