'Boys have no excuse for cascade of mistakes

— There’s no way to sugar coat this, no way to rationalize it, no way to put a positive spin on it. It is one of the most astonishing and colossal collapses we have ever seen in the National Football League.

The Dallas Cowboys, the popular preseason pick to go to the Super Bowl, the most talented team in football, did not make the playoffs. They came to Philadelphia needing just one big game, one total effort from everybody.

They couldn’t do it. They couldn’t run, couldn’t pass, couldn’t tackle, couldn’t hang onto the football, couldn’t keep from making stupid mistakes. For the third time in four December games, the Cowboys lost a game they had to win.

Tony Romo will get a lot of the blame, and with reason. His record in December and January is now 5-10. This is not the stuff of which legends are made. But don’t lay it all on No. 9’s shoulders. This latest Dallas collapse is the work of the entire organization. Pick out any aspect of the operation — team chemistry, individual effort, coaching, personnel decisions of the front office — and you’ll find failure.

When everyone — including your own owner — is saying you have the most talent in the league, you’ve got to prove it. You’ve got to go to Philadelphia or anywhere else and at least play a hard, clean game. Maybe you play your heart out and lose on a last-second field goal or a bad break. But you don’t go into that situation and get blown out. You don’t play so small that the fans need a microscope to find you on the field.

The final score was 44-6. Romo threw one interception, lost the ball twice on fumbles and was sacked four times. There were two more lost fumbles by his teammates. Two of the fumbles were returned a total of 169 yards for touchdowns.

On the plus side, Terrell Owens had six catches for 103 yards.

That’s how it is with this dysfunctional bunch of players — you can’t call them a team because they don’t meet the definition of one — put together by Jerry Jones, the NFL’s answer to the George Steinbrenner of 20 years ago. You remember that Steinbrenner. He was the one who thought that the more stars he had on his team, the more championships he’d win. And if he failed one season, he’d make even more stupid personnel decisions in the offseason to set up an even grander failure.

Other teams have had disappointing seasons. Other teams have collapsed. The New Orleans Saints were supposed to be a playoff-caliber team, but they never had a credible defense. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers totally collapsed in December, but few people thought they were going to play in January anyway. The Chicago Bears fell apart, but they played their hearts out and just didn’t have enough on offense to win. The San Diego Chargers, too, were a major disappointment, but even they didn’t approach the level of the Cowboys.

The Chargers at least got better as the year went on. The Cowboys got worse. And they saved their worst for last.

Dallas started December by taking a 10-point fourth-quarter lead against the Pittsburgh Steelers and losing by seven. They followed that with a big win against the New York Giants, a win that made people believe the Cowboys could make it all better. But the following week, they gave up two 70-plus-yard touchdown runs to the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth quarter and lost the game. And then they went to Philadelphia and just flat messed the bed.

The official story line on the season is that the Detroit Lions, by going 0-16, established themselves as the worst team in the history of the league. But compared to the Cowboys, the Lions are heroes. They at least played their hearts out every week. Through week after week after depressing week of losing, the Lions players rarely complained, didn’t cry to reporters, didn’t ask for pity or sympathy or quarter.

Detroit’s record of perfect imperfection can’t be laid to the players, who did their jobs as well as they could. To them should be nothing but respect. They didn’t lose because of lack of effort but because of lack of talent, and that’s the front office’s fault, not theirs.

But Dallas had it all going for them — great running back, great receivers, great defense, almost-great quarterback. They have the name and the tradition and the national fan base and the national media attention. All they had to do was perform up to their abilities.

When the season began, the Cowboys were the favorites to go to the Super Bowl. That wasn’t wishful thinking on the part of the fans. It was the sober judgment of professionals who spend their lives analyzing the game.

Sure, they had some adversity. Romo went down mid-season with a broken finger and they lost some games. But the playoffs were there for the taking once December began. They didn’t have to run the table. Two wins in four games would have done it for them.

Instead, they lost three of four, and the final ignominy of the season was the humiliating exercise in self-destruction the Cowboys indulged in on Sunday in Philadelphia.

There were no excuses. Romo was healthy. The weather was balmy. They knew what they had to do.

They put in the effort early on, then imploded in a cascade of mistakes that became an avalanche of Philadelphia points.

And so the Eagles, who always seem to get dumped on by the media, are in the playoffs yet again and the Cowboys are still looking for their first postseason win in more than a decade. It was all there for them and they couldn’t grab it.

They didn’t just lose, they collapsed like few teams have ever collapsed before. Jerry Jones said last week that he’s happy with his coach and his players. After Sunday, even he has to know he’s either fooling himself or he’s lying.

Don't you just find it fascinating that Bill Parcells leaves the Cowboys and becomes the GM of the Dolphins and in one year takes them from 1-15 to 11-5.  Just goes to show you what a guy who really knows pro football can do when left to his own devises.  We can only hope that JJ will go find someone who really knows the game and let them run the team.

lol - The New Jersey Con Man had his chance here and failed. If he were coach of the Fins then they too would have failed.

JJ will never let any coach do his own thing.  Until JJ is no longer the owner the Cowgirls will never have another Superbowl.  Jimmy Johnson bailed for a reason, JJ wouldn't leave him be.

Even worse, the Packers!! Dallas lost because they have no chemistry. Green Bay, because of crappy decisions. 13-3 to 6-10. Even worse than the Cowpokes

The COWBOYS riding their RANGE, just couldn't get the job and roundup done again this year? New horses undoubtedly are needed, along with some new riders. Tew  chuch  wagon needs a new cook, and the beans need to be  cooked longer by big daddy his self.

Dallas has the same problems we have in Denver... an immature and coddled QB that prevents team chemistry from arising and a coach and coaching staff whose time has past. I hate to watch players in their prime suffer under such conditions

To anyone bashing on the Cowboys, listen up!! You can get all over T.O. and you can talk all you want about Pacman and his issues. And you can talk all the dirt you can muster about Romo.

But in order to put a playoff and SuperBowl team on the field, you must know personnel and understand that talking is just talking, not playing. Jones has no place making GM or Coaching decisions (which is a major reason Parsells is gone and doing his magic in Miami). And his coach is no star either. You just had to watch his face during any game this season but especially the last game to see he doesn't command anything or anyone.

The team needs a leader, especially Tony Romo. He's a kid, just like Eli was with people saying crappy things about him (just like they did to Eli). He needs someone to lead him also, and right now it's not there in Dallas.

Personnel in the office has to be right, and its not. Stop bashing a good quarterback with bad coaches. Pennington got the same treatment with the Jets.

I cannot beleive how happy watching Romo getting trounced made me!   The Cowboys are a disgrace- not a team by any standard- just a bunch of overpaid, whiny little girls.  And the owner, JJ is the worst- that man is the most arrogant, ugly, old cragly guy I may have ever seen- The saying goes...  You reap what you sow...  Guess that holds true for this team of misfits, whiners, and criminals!

Simple.  Tar and feather their owner and run him out of town on a rail like they should have years ago.  They will never be worth anything till he is long gone!  The team could be a worthy team without him! I still feel that Dallas should be ashamed that they allowed him to buy the team.

I've been a Cowboys fan since I knew what a football was and will still be.  I seldom agree with this guy, but he toatlly nailed it!!  We shoudn't be hearing one single excuse from Dallas.  They should "man up" and admit they just collapsed.  Instead of golfing during this now longer than anticipated off season for them, they should be focusing on getting their heads out of the dark place that they're in and treat us fans to what we know they're really capable of!!!

I agree that Jerry Jones is a major problem for the team. He'll never hire another coach like Jimmy Johnson and treats the team like its a holding tank for NFL castoffs and malcontents. But angry, loud-mouthed players fill the seats, right Jerry?

Wade Phillips looks like he needs to sit on the pot for a couple hours and get rid of that troubled, confused look on his face. Most penalized team in the NFL, doesn't that hint at some coaching issues? But Wade is just the kind of wimp Jones likes so I guess he'll be around next year, along with the penalties.

And speaking of next year, a new stadium in a bad economy with a bad team. Good luck with that, Jer, since luck is all you know how to put on the field.

"It is one of the most astonishing and colossal collapses we have ever seen in the National Football League."

This has got to be one of the most ignorant statements ever made. In order to collapse you frist have to be on Top, right? Well this team has not won a playoff game in over ten years! They are, however, a hugh dissappointment. But one one that should have caught anyone off gaurd. Wade is a failed head coach and to think it would be any different in Dallas is stupidity. There was no leadership on this team full of "I"'s. I was no fan of the New Jersey Con Man either. The tuna was to afraid to let this team play. Wade has no balls. We need a coach who can lead and teach these young players.

Never feel sorry for a millionair! But I do feel bad for Romo. He is gonna take @!$%# for this loss all offseason. Yes, he did make a bunch of errors, but his team did little to help. Romo is a gunslinger. You live by the gun you die by the gun. You can't have the good without the bad. But Romo does need some coaching to help bring his game under control. Romo is the next Great Dallas QB! Time will tell. Remember both Roger and Troy were both labled, by idiots, that they could not win big games.

As we go into this offseason, I am ok with how it turned out. Because this should force some changes. Wade has got to go! If nothing else happens, Wade has got to go! Or else we are gonna do it again next year.

Aside from the statement I quoted, the rest of the article is just about spot on.

I agree that the Dallas Cowboys have had a big disappointing season this year. For a team that was mentioned to make it to the SuperBowl this year, and they didn't even make it to the playoffs is pretty bad!

Here are some of the things I think need to improve for next season:

(1)QB - Tony Romo is a decent quarterback, he needs better training/more confidence. Also, we need to get a great backup quaterback we can rely on. Brad Johnson needs to go, and so does Brooks Bollinger. We need to get someone that will put some scare into Tony Romo about losing his job to, so he will play alot better.

                                    (2) Penalties - Dallas was the most penalized team, and this needs to stop. It hurt us on big plays. I think they need to have something where they get punished for excessive penalties. Flozell Adams' name was called alot!

                                    (3) Special Teams - was pretty bad and needs work!

                                    (4) Recievers - needs work and needs to quit dropping balls. Some of that needs to be blamed on QB, but most is the receiver themself!

I think the biggest dispointing losses of the season were:

                                    (1) Final Regular Season Game @ Texas Stadium - the last game to be played there, and we went out with a loss. What a bad way to close out the stadium that has alot of history for the DC's!

                                    (2) Final Game of Season - What a horrible loss to the Eagles. All we had to do was win and we would have been in the playoffs! Too many mistakes by everyone! I am not even confident that if we made the playoffs, that we would have won a game, so maybe it was better to lose now!

This crap that's being put on the field... we're supposed to buy that?

I'll take a hard working TEAM like the Dolphins or Falcons any day over this bunch of whiners, including the owner!

I love the Cowboys, the team, not the individuals that think they are above everything. The team will still be here for years to come and hopefully with better management and players!

We thought a couple years ago that we would get rid of Jerky Jones, but Arlington succumbed to giving Jackhole Jones a stadium (prior to that, we thought he'd relocate the team to L.A. to try to strut on that market's stage).
The 'more stars, more championships' philosophy just does not work.  Sure, the Cowboys had stars in the past - but it was their leadership and ethics as well as their on-field performance that elevated them to stardom.  But those players were not hyped 'Day 1' as stars, they earned it.  Right now, there are a majority of the 'noisemakers' on the team that do not deserve the stardom they are demanding.
I'd like to return to the days when the Cowboys were fielding 22 no-names, who through hard work and 'relatively' clean living made the talent / ability / accomplishment of the team greater than the sum of the individual contributors.  I think Romo is a keeper, as well as Witten, Roy Williams (11), Barber, Ware (and the list should go on, but I will stop here).  There are players that need to go - Pacman, T.O., and Tank (although he has been on his best behavior) as well as Wade Phillips and Jerry Jones (as well as all of the former Dallas coaches that are back on the sideline as assistants - like Campo).
But Jones is screwed going into the first year of the collosal GOATSE that Jerry has build in Arlington - either he'll be fielding a team of criminals and prima donnas, or he'll be fielding a team that might have a good chance of tying the Lions feat of 2008.
I want working class heroes to root for - give me a modern day Lilly, Pugh, Wright, Newhouse, Harris, Waters, Jordan, Renfro, Staubach, Calvin Hill -- and give me a player who will turn down the big payday to remain with the team from draft / acquisition until the day he retires.
But one thing is for sure - the Super Bowl that will be held at the new stadium in Arlington WILL NOT see the Cowboys taking the field that day.

                                          Buy Wade (PLEASE)

Wade needs to go.  With this much 'personality' the team needs a no nonsense leader.  Someone who will beat them into submission.  The Eagles benched McNabb because he was playing terribly, but the team was better for it and so was McNabb.  TO, Whitten, Romo, Barber, everyone on Dallas needs to realize they will accomplish nothing without the other players, and that is the coaches job.  They should have slaughtered the Eagles but they weren't driven to do it.  100% Coaches fault.  Additionally the offense is the weak point so don't give Jason the chance to screw up anything else.

I say new head coach, new offensive coordinator. Take the talent and make it work, they get paid enough to do it.

Why is anyone surprised?  You have to put guys on the field who want to work together toward a common goal.  Most of these guys want to be "the STAR"  you can't have a team full of those and hope to come out on top.  Dallas has had this type of players for years, but it seems they have more than their share now-------.  JJ needs to find a true Coach and leave him alone.   You truly can win with just a few stars.   You need a TEAM.

Dallas Cowboys:  No leaders on Offense.  No leaders on Defense.  No leaders in the Coaching staff.  No leaders in Management.  What you see is what you get when no one is leading.
