NEW ORLEANS — A man who initially told police gunmen kidnapped his 2 1/2-year-old son was arrested Saturday, accused of committing an "extremely hideous" murder because he was ordered to pay child support, Police Superintendent Warren Riley said.

Danny Platt confessed, told police where to find the child's body and will be booked on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Ja' Shawn Powell, Riley said at a news conference.

"He had said he would kill either his wife or his child before he paid child support," which he recently had been ordered to do, Riley said.

Riley said he did not know the amount of child support and would not describe how the boy was killed, saying the coroner would do that after the autopsy was complete. The coroner's spokesman did not immediately return a call.

"The mother is in a safe place," Riley said.

Although he had visiting rights, Platt, 22, of New Orleans, had never visited the boy until he picked him up Friday, Riley said.

Police put out a notice Saturday asking people to look for the boy and saying his father had told them three men with dreadlocks and AK-47 rifles had piled out of an SUV and kidnapped Ja' Shawn shortly before midnight Friday.

"His story never really added up," Riley said. "He was a suspect from the very beginning."

Riley said Platt eventually confessed and told officers where to find the body.

Police spokesman officer Janssen Valencia said he did not know if Platt has an attorney.

Platt had only a couple of "very minor" previous arrests, Riley said.

"How does an individual — because he's ordered to pay child support to take care of a kid ... believe that this is so much pressure that he would face — he would do this hideous act to his own child, or to any child, and think that is a remedy to paying child support?" Riley said. "I mean there are some sick individuals in this society, and this gentleman is clearly one."

This thing should not go to trial, he confessed doing it, throw him in prison, like someone else said he will die in prison. This person is such a dirtbag, to bad if he didn't make it to prison.

Vile.

I hope the only way he comes out of prison is in a coffin. Someone like that has no place in this world.

Men have been getting away with abortion 'abandonment' of their children for too long.  Now that we are starting to actually stop them from aborting their children, they kill them to get free of their responsibilities.

My brother is a Corrections Officer here in NJ. He works in a State Prison, and there a few things the prisoners do not tolerate and that is Child killers and rapists.

landspirit stated:   Men (edit: should be men and women) have been getting away with abortion 'abandonment' of their children for too long.  Now that we are starting to actually stop them from aborting their children, they kill them to get free of their responsibilities.

I would just like to let you know "landspirit", there is a world of men, in this world, that love their children and pay child support.

It sounds to me like you are a true "man-hater".  This story, if you read it, is about one "scum of the earth" person, whom I am ashamed to share the same gender, that should be strung up with a rope in the middle of "Time Square", televised,  then maybe, some of the other scum of the earth "people, whether it be man or woman" would quit committing these crimes.  How can a man or woman, kill a child?  Kill their own child????  It is beyond me.  In my opinion, there is no punishment severe enough in cases such as this.  I for sure hope this man rots in prison and is reminded of his crime, everyday for the rest of his life and I hope he lives to be 115yrs old. Prison is to good for someone like this.

    Hey christian_grandma!

I am a christian grandpa.  I would just like to let you know there are allot of dead-beat-moms out there also!  Would you like for me to name a few that have been in the news lately.  You sound like one of those man-haters also.

Please don't compare all of us men to this "scum of the earth" individual that should for sure - burn in hell - for killing this small innocent human being!!!!

If the statement didn't apply to you, why are you so bothered by it.  It's wonderful that you may not be a dead-beat "parent", but let's not gloss over the fact that you are also in the minority. You can't be compared to the "scum of the earth" if you aren't one.

Why should christian_grandma and landspirit be called man-haters as opposed to men telling other men to get their act together.

According to the US Census Bureau, when comparing men and women who are ordered to pay child support, on a percentage-basis women are less likely to pay as ordered.

Why should christian_grandma and landspirit be called man-haters as opposed to men telling other men to get their act together.

I think at worst, christian_grandma might have a somewhat myopic view (which is true of all people).

On the other front, when someone makes sweeping, across-the-board indictments such as "Men have been getting away with abortion 'abandonment' of their children for too long.  Now that we are starting to actually stop them from aborting their children, they kill them to get free of their responsibilities", it begs the question. For example, if person x had said "women are heartless monsters" or "african americans are murders", then I would wager that s/he had some bigotry issues. It just feeds the cycle of hatred and resentment.

Secondly males do tell other males to get their act together. I guess it depends where you choose to make core identity divisions as to whom you see the blame lying with (such as along religious, economic, gender, etc lines). I would also say there is a difference between being male and being a man, and being a female and being a woman. There are far too few real men and women in this world. One is a biological consideration, I would see the other as being a socio-cultural distinction that has to do with maturity, wisdom, responsibility, and class.

JohnRidge The statement was not directed to all men. I meant that there are a lot of dead beat dads, but they don't all murder their child. I did not mean to offend and I am not a man hater. I am aware that their are dead beat moms as well, this article was about a dad...but most importantly about a precious baby who lost it's life. A life that should have been allowed to live! Sorry if you were offended.

This is so horrible and sad, for anyone to kill anyone is so sad, but your own child is beyond my comprehension, to me it had to be to get the mother back and make sure she didn't get any money from him, as you would think he had to of thought of the concequences of his actions of having to pay the altimate price of losing his freedom all together or possibly his life as the Death Penalty is still alive in Louisiana, and if as someone else stated if he goes to prison just for life, he will get whats coming to him alright as it is widely known even in prison, child abusers and child murders are the scum of the earth, his life will be a living hell. Alot say Death Penalty to him, and yes I do believe in the Death Penalty,  but in cases like this it would be kinda nice to think of him being tortured at-least for a little bit by what the other inmates will do to him and possibly make him wish himself dead, lol, Sorry Im not a sadist either, but it this case it seems warranted.

Rather late here coming back to the seed. I am not a man hater. Sweeping statements can be misleading. However, reality is reality. And men have beengetting away with abortion for centuries. So if the abortion is rendered illegal, then women need to make sure it is illegal also for the men. Women should be highly selective in allowing someone to have sex with them. Only the most successful males, the ones demonstrating the capacity to be a father should be chosen and a contract of parental responsibility be signed prior to sex detailing the financial, physical and emotional commitment required for the man should pregnancy occur. Like to see it or not- that is asking no more than you ask of the woman if she is to have sex and abortion is illegal. She is facing that responsibility every time she has sex, because even with adequate birth control- things just happen. She will bea mother then. Dad will likely have to be forced to be the father. I know several men that are great fathers and who support and love their children even though divorced. These men are interactive in their children's life and are truly 'fathers'. However the number of men I know that are just the opposite is 10 times greater than the ones who are good fathers.

Asking men to face the same consequences as one requires of a woman for a pregnancy is not man hating, but good try. It is just reality and fairness for the child who might be conceived and for the woman who will be faced with a pregnancy and being a mother for the rest of her life.

        Stephen,

I agree with you. What this man did is unforgivable.

Unfortunately many men feel powerless when it comes to child support payments.  I have said if you must raise your child alone, then raise it alone, if you cannot do so, then work even harder.

I know this sounds harsh for mothers... but I was raised with very little and sometimes if it takes knowing that you did it on your own, then fine, if he refuses to pay those are the demons he must face when he looks at the child.

But sadly there is no loving child anymore. So whom really lost here?

$$$ doesn't equal a child, and it never will.

        so sad.

the bio father of my first son was a complete dead beat. after i found out i was pregnant and told him, his response was 'good luck getting anything out of me. i've already got 7 kids i don't pay for'. seriously?? the only reason i told him was because i thought it was the right thing to do seeing as how i would be leaving that state to go back home and have the baby.

nine months later, i asked him to sign over his rights to the child to me. he refused because my son was his first son. he eventually did, when i promised to waive the back child support he owed me. he saw my child maybe a dozen times and each time was a court hearing, the last time was over 7 years ago. good riddance! i knew that money or not, it would be drama for the next 18 years. something that wasn't acceptable for me or my child.

i wish there could be less drama when it comes to the whole baby-mama and baby-daddy crap. the kids are the real casualty in that. and i wish more women felt empowered enough to take care of their children on their own without having to chase down someone who obviously doesn't want to help in the first place.

And you haven't looked behind you have you? No reason to. It was the fathers choice, just as it is the mothers. You are either with or without the child. The money is not worth life... it is just mere paper.

hell no. there's no looking back. i was more than happy to take on the responsibility on my own and did so until i met a wonderful man who refused to stay in the corner. :) we married (going on 7 years now) and he adopted my son as his own within weeks of the wedding. we have two more children and a very happy home. i couldn't ask for more.

i know that if i had played the whole custody/visitation/child support game that so many others play that i probably wouldn't have a successful marriage (what man wants to get involved with that much drama) and i would probably be absolutely crazy by now.

I agree!! My grandsons father turned out to be a terror who caused my daughter and the rest of us, nothing but trouble. People are always saying my daughter should be getting child support from him but she chose not to. I support her thinking 100 percent. No amount of money would not be worth it. Yes, it might make thing a little easier financially, but the money would come with a price and believe me,  not having that nut case in ours lives is priceless.

trs8462  Your story sounds like mine! I have two grandchildren. One is 17, and his father is a dangerous man. He has had many run ins with the law. My grandson talked to him once when he was 15. the father said he would call him back and never did! As far as my grandfather, we don't know for sure who he is. Sometimes I think that is a praise, because we don't have to worry about him. I would work the rest of my life to make sure they are protected and cared for. It is so sad that the precious baby's dad had access to him. I just want to cry every time I think about this poor baby and how he died. This will be one story that stays with me !

i am amazed that so many people resort to " the race card". None of this has anything to do with race. Attitude and lifestyle are at the core of this atrocity. Add this to a system that does not support the correct issues. The court ( supposedly loaded with educated experienced people) saw no signs of this? How about the doctor who delivered this poor doomed baby? anybody? Is anybody listening? God have mercy on the souls of everyone involved and Thanks for being a good dad. there is absolutely no substitute for real fathers.

Do You Have a Flag 2.1 Very good comment. Money does not equal a child's life and some fathers are too violent, abusive and cruel to be in their children's lives. However, that does not excuse them from being responsible. And that is the problem. We excuse them from the life of a child because they cannot make support payments, don't want to have the reponsibility and have abusive mindsets. Men need to be held responsible for their own behavior. That is why there are so many single moms out there. They are taking on that responsibility and society holds them to standards not required or even expected of the man. The abortion issue and problem stems from this and will never be resolved until we start making societal changes in our views.

Heinous and abominable. That poor child. My only hope is that he died quickly and without the horror of knowing what his "father" was about to do to him.

This is going to do wonders for the image of the black community, who needs to present a united front and condemn this man person: no excuses, no apologists, no temporizing about his past. This person thug is nothing more than an animal. In fact, he is worse than an animal. Animals are not capable of free will, yet he chose to act like one.

I hate to say it, but -- aside from the wish this had never happened at all -- I wish that it had been within the the jurisdiction of Texas. The Texas Judiciary would have ensured that Mr. Danny Platt would never sire children or see the light of day again: men who die of lethal injection aren't privy to such amenities.

You, Mr. Platt, are trash. You should be discarded as such. Thug. May Satan daily toast your death with the juices of your disembowelment.

This happened in the United States of America and was perpetrated by an American. The image of the Black community and what it "needs to" do don't obscure the fact that a father killed his own son, here in the States. Look beyond ethnicity. It does not explain the motive.

Hi caroaber.  I'd love to look beyond ethnicity. And...I did address that Mr. Platt's pride, selfishness, and self-centeredness was immeasurably reprehensible.

(btw, Lady Saidy, it's good to know that Louisiana has a death penalty. I am one of those liberals who actually believes in it.)

However, there are people out (lots of 'em) there thinking "it." And "it" needs to be addressed so that the people who are thinking "it" see that there is a population of black men out here (me included) who obey the law and don't go around robbing, raping, and murdering people.

Two Corrections. This first part is free a moron is someone with very low reasoning ability. Tony is male and Toni is female. Now look at your comment above and you will see for yourself why I believe your IQ to be 3 points lower than your shoe size.

Point 1: it happens every day with every race or did you miss the News on Christmas when White Santa killed and torched the family of his Ex wife.

I can give a hole list of things like this happening if you like just come on back and pretend your smart again.

Point 2: People on all sides of the fence (meaning all races just in case you don't get it) commit violent acts. You might want to think one race is worse than the other but as I recall the most violent gun battle between cops and criminals in recent history was also done by white males, carrying full auto weapons, armor piercing rounds, an they where wearing body armor. This was done in daylight and captured on film.

As you can see the solution has nothing to do with race. Lets try to focus on mindset and why it happens. People don't wake up and go "Hey I think today would be a good day to take a gun to school and shoot all the people I don't like".

Now don't burst a blood vessel trying to think of a reply. You don't want a battle of the minds with me if you don't have any ammo.

cdpark1 I do not agree with you. My grandson's father threaten to kidnap him and he is white. Why play a race card that is not needed? There are plenty of crimes committed everyday by all races! What about all the white women who killed their children, (Susan, Darlene and others)? Give it a break!

No need to wait. By the way the spelling was on purpose as I like to leave an opening (it makes things more fun). What I would like to know is where your getting your facts from. It is easy to see you have never been around a person of color and believe the so called reality crap on TV. Lets take a rapper for instance. One of the most well known artist at the top of the charts has 3 different names and the fun one is Slim Shaddy. I don't listen to rap but I have heard his songs and in one he even says the stuff they say is nothing like real life but is used to sell records. I think the line is how could I raise my daughter if the other stuff where true (not positive but you can check on the real lines yourself).

You see for every violent act you read about by someone of color you can read another about someone white. Then open to another page and it's Hispanic and the next Asain. The only reason it seems Blacks commit more is because more of them end up behind bars for crimes where if your white you get released. Ask yourself this "If a poor black woman that couldn't afford the lawyers commited the same crime as Paris Hilton do you think she would A: go to jail and serve the whole sentence or B: get placed on house arrest like Paris?"

Now for another. CEO's steal millions and never due jail time. A Black man steals 20.00 worth of food and gets 6 months behind bars. I like watching the show COPS every now and then. When you get a chance to watch 5 shows count the number of White, Black, and Hispanic the cops get called in on or end up in a high speed chase with (the numbers will surprise you).

A lot of the black culture out there doesn't value life but does value money.  That's obvious.... However, it's much higher in the black community and I can't help think that when a guy kills a kid over child support(money) that maybe that culture in their lives plays heavy on it.  All the bling, slinging dope instead of making $12 hr. at the factory, fancy cars but no jobs etc etc.  They glamorize it on tv, magazines, album covers celebrity interviews.

What a horrible thing to say! It's obvious that you don't come out of your home to experience people. This is not a certain community problem but an American problem. I suggest you subscribe to periodicals other then the popular ones so you can learn what's actually going on in American communities.

The cases that I have read about with this sort of thing did not involve a black man. Try looking up some articles and I usure you most often it was a white male. Also there have been many mothers who have killed their own children and they were often white women as well. This is not a race issue, it is an issue regarding a sick man that took away a childs life.

This is not the first time some sicko has done something like this. It does not make any sense, they do not want to pay child support so they kill the child and end up possibly spending the rest of their lives in jail.

Its true, for some reason children in this country have become dispossible. Parents get rid of them for all sorts of reasons, boyfriends dont want them around, mom wants to party, the devil told them to do it, and now to get out of child support. Our children are our future, what is the world coming to if we dont consider them to be precious.

trs, you are so right! I breaks my heart when I hear a story like this. Children have become disposable and this is wrong. I am the children's director at our church, the prayers of these children would just break your heart. I also do childcare in my home and I see a lot. One lady dropped off her child and it looked like she had been in a car wreck, her little girl 3 yrs old) told me crying she was mad at her daddy, because he hurt her mom. She said he pushed her down the stairs. I just hugged this baby!! I can't stand it, that children are put through this.

And this waste of @!$%#ing skin goes and kills his son.

nope. as a single mother i worked at a convienence store and supported myself and my child without child support or welfare. i wasn't previously married, so there was no alimony there. and i certainly couldn't expect preferential treatment at the Handy Mart.

i worked 40 hours a week, and i found a one bedroom apt that cost just $300/month. i made the time to search out child care and found a lady who charged much less than any child care center. and because i was out of work by noon, i never had to pay a whole day's charge.

i won't deny that i accepted help from family and friends at times. i made friends with other single moms who would pass on bags of clothes for my child after theirs had outgrown them. i shopped almost exclusively at big lots and walmart. i didn't have cable tv. i didn't even have a vcr or dvd player. i read books to my kid and took him to the park. i made homemade play-doh with him.

single moms can do it on their own. they just aren't given the tools or the encouragement from the beginning. they're encouraged to get on welfare and to make the daddy pay his fair share. it's the wrong way to go about it.

i didn't mean to write out such a long response and possibly come off as if i'm such a champion. i do hope others realize that some single mothers are doing it on their own and they're doing very well. not all of them are on welfare or harassing the daddy.

many other single moms and dads can do the same if they just know what to do. i think there's a lack in educating young people about that. wasn't there something called home economics once??? :) i'm sure it didn't address unwed mothers/fathers, but there are tons of people out there with absolutely no life skills and they end up on welfare or jail or worse. it sucks.

I am certain it isn't easy.  But welfare is such a drag, and I applaud you for relying on your home-ec skills to get you through.  It's enviable.  And I agree that life skills are extremely underrated--why is that!?

                      Killing kids is wrong.

If he felt so cornered and hopeless by the situation he was put in that he had to kill one of them, he should have killed the mother not the kid.

WTF? That makes no sense. {by the way}, are you one of the many miss-informed Americans who think the majority of welfare moms are African Americans & Hispanics? Well think again the majority of them welfare queens as you put it are white women but that's not the issue at hand although a very important one, {thank god for welfare, Many moms regardless of color truly need that help, and I for one am proud to be An American for we do take care of our Neddie} As for this crazy, immature animal who kills his son on the first true meeting with the boy, shouldn't be put down, that would be to easy. He's to dumb to fully understand his actions. life with out the possibility of parole will serve a better lesson. Let's force him to live with what he did for the rest of his life, knowing that some day he will mature and that final look from his son as he took his life will haunt him for ever, every dream about his son, every birth day, fathers day and x-mas will serve him just right. life with out the possibility of parole would be justice served. killing him would be to fast let him think about what he did for as long as he should live {behind bars} and the fact that he will never be able to have another son will eat away at his selfish immature soul.

When it comes to my family I do everything I can to protect them (trained Caucasian mountain dog and a 9mm...if you google the dog there large, beautiful, and not to be messed with). As a father I would suggest the courts remember 2 things which are electric chair or shot trying to escape.

Mine has never bitten anyone but she has knocked a few of my friends down and sat on them. I think she likes to play to much with the ones she knows she makes nervous.

You would think any father would consider it a blessing to have a job and be able to provide for his family; his wife, the mother of his child, and his own son!.  Even if it was through child support payments.  What could be more valuable to a father than his very own child(ren)?

I agree with Tony Williams.  I don't want to know or understand how this could happen.

Not to blame the mother...my heart goes out to her...but I wonder how much she knew about this man before she made the decision to make a child with him.  Isn't it a primal thing... like an instinct...to (even subconsciously) choose the father (or mother) of your children based on more than that person's looks?

I commend the mother who had her child's father give up his parental rights to her.

This man (?) was not a parent, was not a father.  Any damned fool can make a baby.  If only this guy had only been just a damned fool.

I don't really see why people want this guy to get the death penalty when there are far more interesting choices available.  Life in prison for one...I'm assuming that it'll be known that he killed a child and that doesn't sit very well with inmates.  At the very least, he'll end up someones unhappy bride and at worst, they'll kill him in a more painful and deserving way then the state is allowed(lethal injection is a joke).  For those of you who are religious and believe that he is going to hell, think of it this way...his seat is reserved, is there a need to rush?

I'd prefer to see him put in solitary confinement for the rest of his life in a 5x7 cell with no lights or windows and the only human interaction he will ever receives is the 3 times a day he is fed.  While this is probably not something that would happen, he deserves to have his mind slowly rot away as he is given ample time to think about the crime that he committed.

Oh and as for the racial comments from previous posters...this story shouldnt be about a black man who murdered his child.  This story is about a PARENT who murdered their child.  Back when we had the string of crazy women killing their children, I never heard anything about race...why does it have to come up now?  If your looking at another person and still judging by skin color, your just stupid.  Regardless of race, gender, or age...humans are capable of doing some pretty horrible things to eachother.

Eric, I couldn't agree with you more.  This story has nothing to do with skin color, it's a parent killing their own child!  I can't even begin to get a grasp on how any parent can get up the nerve to commit such a heinous act.  Okay, so he's immature.  He's still old enough to know right from wrong, and to know this was a CHILD, not some irritating bug that was annoying him!

Solitary confinement would be too good for this lowlife.  We've all heard the stories of how other inmates feel about crimes committed against children.  Put him in general population where he can get what he deserves.

It's sad that somehow this makes sense in his mind. He probably still doesn't know what he did wrong.

I agree he's to immature to fully understand what he did. This is why I think he should get life with out the possibility of parole, so that he can some day understand what he has done.

So so sad....in the words of MARVIN: WHATS GOIN ON, AWWWWWW WHATS GOIN ON? I cannot imagine the terror this little "being" must have felt during the last moments leading up to his death....the only thing out of all the madness to this story is the satisfaction of my faith in god that this dumb bastard with die a horrific death in prison and that his beautiful child will live as a little angel protected with christ.....

Sadly my next door neighbour did a similar thing (after he had moved away from the area) when arrested for murdering his 6 year old son he said he did it to get his exwife off his back.

Its a really sad statement about society when people can fall to such depths and feel they have no other choice

developerchris, this must have been unbearable for you being so close to the situation. I had a little girl in my children ministry who was murdered and hung after being sexually violated. This wasn't done by a parent, but the image of this beautiful baby will stay with me forever. I just will never understand how a person can do this. The children of this horrible world need to be protected.

Ah ! Another poor innocent Black is the victim of descrimination.. How dare the police pick him up and put him in prison with all the other innocent Blacks who are only in there because they are Black.. C'mon Al get moving.. You've got 1/2 of a Black ready to enter the White House, get his ear and I'm sure you can get this guy off... After all you produced all those Phantom Whites who violated Tawana Brawley . And look at what you did to the Man when he make that comment on his show. Imus was a wuss when he came on and apologized to you.. What anyone would apologize to you for is this century's mystery. I can just imagine what would have happened had McCain won, and the half-breed had lost. We'd still be trying to stop the looting and screaming and lawless carnage, that usually happens when the Blacks don't get their way.. Is this comment racist. ?  Of course it is , because it doesn't take the Black Man's side. Anything truthful about Blacks is racist.  This country is really in for a ride .. If Obama isn't racist, how come he never refers to his White side ? Is he ashamed of it ? Why is he always referred to as, African American. He wasn't born in Africa was he ? I mean if you were born in a barn, they wouldn't call you a horse, would they ? C'mon all you White Liberals, let's hear what you have to say.. I'll check back in 1 year, and see just how happy you are with your candidate..

I'll never understand why bigots have to make uninformed racial comments and cry like babies when they lose. You seem to be doing enough whining in your little world of blind hate so I'll ask.

Is it your child that's sleeping with someone who isn't white or is it your spouse?

No Williams, that's the Black Man's game... Load them up with kids and let the White MAn care for them. As I said above, anyone who doesn't agree with the Blacks is a bigot...

So what your saying is because 1 man who is black did this then it's a race thing. It's funny how you forget the poor dead girl killed by her white mother and the white father dressed as Santa who shot the 8 year old girl in the head as soon as she opened the door. Should I continue.

                                        Stupid...very very stupid

A parent killed his child...if you hadn't seen the photo and all the article said is "Danny Platt murdered his son to avoid paying child support" then I bet the idea of race wouldn't have even entered your mind.  Simply by bringing the issue up shows how much of a biased person you are.  Get that out of your head.  Black, white, yellow, brown, or any other color in the rainbow...it doesn't say a damn thing about the character of the person simply by looking at skincolor.  Hopefully someday the rest of the world will realize that.
