RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — Brazil's state-run oil company says an accident on an offshore platform left one worker dead and halted production.

Petrobras says the accident occurred on the P-34 platform off the coast of Espirito Santo state.

The accident was related to a valve, the company said in a statement Monday. Petrobras said authorities are investigating the accident and did not provide other details.

The platform was the first to pump from Brazil's pre-salt oil finds and began production in September with a ceremony attended by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The reservoirs could hold up to 80 billion barrels of oil.

The company did not say when it expects the platform to resume operations or how much oil it was producing.
