Pakistan dismisses Indian data as 'not evidence'

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan's prime minister has downplayed the significance of an Indian dossier on the Mumbai attacks, saying it only contained information and "not evidence," state media reported.

Yousuf Raza Gilani's remarks late Tuesday before Parliament were likely to anger New Delhi, which says the dossier provides evidence that Pakistani militants staged the November slaughter of 164 people. India specifically blames Lashkar-e-Taiba, a militant group believed to have links to Pakistani intelligence.

Pakistan only recently acknowledged that the only surviving Mumbai gunman was Pakistani, but it insists none of its state agencies played a role in the attacks. Under international pressure, Pakistan has detained some suspects allegedly linked to the attacks, while repeatedly calling on India to provide evidence to allow legal prosecutions.

"All that has been received from India is some information. I say information because these are not evidence," Gilani said, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan.

The dossier, handed over on Jan. 5, includes transcripts of phone calls allegedly made during the siege by the attackers and their handlers in Pakistan. Previously, India had given Pakistan a letter from the lone surviving gunman, Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, that reportedly said he and the nine other gunmen were Pakistani.

In his statement, Gilani said Pakistan was continuing to examine the dossier.

He also urged "pragmatic cooperation" between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, who have already fought three wars since gaining independence from Britain in 1947.

On Wednesday, gunmen riding on a motorcycle fired on a vehicle carrying police officers near the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta in Pakistan's southwest Baluchistan province, killing four, said Mohammed Ishtiaq, an area police chief. Police were still investigating the motive for the shooting.

Baluchistan has long been the scene of a low-level insurgency, with militant groups seeking greater regional autonomy and a larger share of revenue from its natural resources.

In a separate incident there Wednesday, a roadside bomb critically wounded seven paramilitary troops in Dera Bugti district, some 310 miles (500 kilometers) east of Quetta, said Muhammad Ashfaq, a senior police official.

Sarbaz Baluch, a purported spokesman for the Baluch Republican Army, one of the main militant groups in the province, said the group staged the attack out of revenge after a large portrait of a slain nationalist Baluchi leader was removed from the area.

He claimed that four troops were killed and six wounded.

Now the picture is this, Pakistan has a terrorist group know as Mumbai attacking India and its citizens, while, a terrorist group linked to Al-Keida trains and retreats to and fro from Pakistan to Afghanistan causing harm and fear as well as carnage and the Pakistani government wants to claim innocent to the fact as well as continue to accept World Bank collateral to fight terrorism.

This picture is as confusing as the political claims of insurgency?

The gunmen were told several times not to kill any Muslim hostages.

Wow, what a shock!  Why is it that people keep telling me that it's NOT about religion, that its about the outside world meddling in Muslim affairs?  Let's see, these Muslims travelled to India and were given specific instructions not to kill any Muslims.  Everyone else goes, I guess.

Wake up and smell the truth.  The Islamists are waging a religious war.  Until the rest of the world acknowleges that, there will be no progress made against them.

I never said anything of the sort. My point was that you can't stop antagonists by antagonizing them further. Terrorists aren't some schoolyard bully that you can beat up and they'll cut it out. We aren't going to be able to exterminate them with brute force, especially is we keep making them into martyrs.

That's right, you don't stop them by antaginizing them.  You stop them by wiping them out.  You make their lives so uncomfortable and unbalanced that they are unable to live without looking over their shoulders.  You destroy their ability to plan, train and propogandize their cause and that cause will die.  The second front is to launch an international effort to educate the ignorant and satisfy the needs of the destitute in that part of the world.  Show them that they have a better option and the mantra of the Islamic extremists becomes much less palatable.   If they choose, after that to become part of the Islamic terrorist movement, then you kill them off in turn.

The problem is Pakistan is in a major self denial mode. It denies anything and everything. The Frankenstein Lashkar-e-Toiba created with the ISI help and resources has now ballooned into a real life giant terrorist threat worldwide. You can never negotiate with a terrorist. Learn from the Israelis. The terrorist can only understand the language of deadly force and death. Pakistani agencies or rogues inside them are fully and heavily involved in providing support to the Mumbai attackers. India needs to ratch it up, take matters in thier own hands, talking and peaceful gestures with this ugly neigbor will not work. The time has come to act and send out a clear message. If Pakistan dosen't want to do this dirty job India should defend itself with deadly surgical strikes inside Pakistan territory with brute force. Enough is enough. When Israel has the right to defend itself and is doing so unabashedly and with such clear focus, why not India ? I really believe religious fanaticism has a role here too, but that is besides the point. Destroy all terrorists irrespective of religion be it whatever. Stop talking and start driving the nail home !

Pakistan has become hub of internation terrorism. Years of nonexistent government, poverty, lawlessness, military dictators, and mullahs have made entire world unsafe. Pakistan is living in self denial and trying to portray an ally on war against terrorism. In reality, Pakistan is wolf in sheep's clothing. Pakistan's refusal to accept recent evidence provided by Indian government in wake of gruesome tragedy is nothing but an insult to innocent people who died.

These Pakistani murderers, I mean government and army, have been killing since their mass murders in Bengal, nearly 3 million murdered and 13 million of their fellow Muslims fled to the only safe country around, INDIA.  They sponser terror in Afghanistan and India and have leaked nuclear technology to terrorists and terrror sponsoring nations.  They don't even control over one-third of their own country.  Shiites and Sunnis in so-called Pakistan murder each other.  It is a viral nation that must be contained first by a long fence along the Indian border.  Fence in the murderers and let them go to heaven by killing each other, as they seem wont to do.  Patrol the seas.  Murderers without shame.

The Pakistanis murdered anywhere between 1 to 3 million.  Knowing how hard these butchers tried to hide their crimes, 3 million may be a conservative estimate.

The beginning paragraph when a murderer terrorist says they have three people, including women, is ordered to kill them, then cheers are heard over the phone, says everything one needs to know about how the Koran deals with non Muslims and how Mohammed, a 50 something man who had sex (statutory rape) with a 9 year old girl still, according to Muslim "holy" books, playing with dolls, would deal with non believers in this violent religion.  And, lest one think that non Muslims means no Muslims, Sunni kill Shiites and Shiites kill Sunnis both with happiness and abandon.  No one is safe.

Pakistan’s defiance and denials really humor me. Three wars have not taught them any lessons. In spite of all the shortcomings and idiocies of Bush; I must say that after 9/11 he definitely did send out a clear message to terrorists worldwide and that message was don’t f%$k with the US. Till date we have not had any such attack again. Once bitten twice shy they say. I am wondering how many times does India need to be bitten by rabid dogs before it acts decisively ? It is a sad period Indians pass through. When is enough going to be enough ? India needs to take a stand and send out a clear definite message immediately.

In Hinduism, The Bhagawad Gita also prescribes and advocates the right to protect oneself and license to destroy evil. Terrorism is evil.

I recall reading the book about the “Raid on Entebbe” in 1976 when a French airplane was hijacked from Israel. The  the Israeli officer leading the raid was killed. He was an only son and when interviewed, his father said his only regret was that he had one son and had wished he had more sons to fight for Israel ! The whole rescue mission was "counter terrorism" and took less than an hour to execute with tremendous success. El Al the Israeli airline has had no more hijackings since then I believe. Is India smaller a nation than Israel, less braver or more concerned about other political personal agendas ? What has gone wrong here ? Why is India quiet ?

The admission by a Pakistani official that the attack was conducted by a Pakistani  citizen led to his dismissal.  Pakistan faces a more powerful country that may seek revenge if the other terrorists are not withdrawn and the culprits punished.

Pakistan should be responsible for withdrawing the remaining terrorists and removing the threats from  their handlers.  The audio evidence should be enough to convince Pakistan to act quickly before more of their trained miscreants cause further attacks.  What if India's fundamentalists gain power and its military were to bomb a few buildings in Kashmir or even Pakistan proper using the same justifications that the US is allowing Israel to attack Gaza with.  Israel which lost only four citizens has already killed 700 Palestinians,  so India could  kill 20,000 Pakistanis with US permission.  Unlike Pakistan, India will not do so because it is a civilized nonviolent country but that could change if Hindu fundamentalists gain control.

So basically you are saying that India should be civilized and not respond and if it does respond then apparently its been taken over by Hindu fundamentalists ? What about its right of self defence ? Defending your country against future terrorist attacks is not "becoming fundamentalist".

Secondly I do not believe India is waiting for "US permission" as it is not on a leash like Pakistan is, which is bought and fed by US taxpayer dollars.

India is civilized now but should Hindu fundamentalists gain power the situation will change as calmer heads will no longer prevail and revenge will be unleashed. How can the attack on India not be viewed as unjustifiable Pakistani agression?

                        N. Kristoff remarked recently in his editorial piece  "The Gaza Boomerang" that the Israeli attack was much more than is justified by the deaths of so few people.  Hindu fundamentalists will view this differently and see an opportunity to strike hard  at an enemy. They will not seek or need the consent of US if a further attack takes place, Pakistan should rein in the remaining Pakistani terrorists and the US should target them also.

This is getting really sick. What does Pakistan think ? Terrorists carry their whole wallet full of credit cards and thier proper govt issued photo Ids ? In behaving in this manner and eternally denying everything in the world, Pakistan is inviting or rather asking for trouble. Is Pakistan prepared for this ? Does it have the capacity to fight a war with India ? Winning it is another story as Pakistan has a sad track record of three wars ending in defeat. I don't think Pakistan has any backbone to face the consequences ? India should gather UN support and retaliate with an iron fist for the Pakistani terrorist attacks on Mumbai. Each country has the right to self defence and protection of its land and citizens from such terrorists and neighbors allowing thier soil to be used for such terrorist attacks. In fact India will be in a defensive position as Pakistanis continue to let the terrorists go scot free within thier country. How cool is "house arrest" ?
