WARSAW — Italian bank UniCredit said Friday it will build a financial services support center in the Polish city of Szczecin to serve its clients in Germany and Austria.

The center is to open this spring and will employ some 260 people, the bank said. Another 200 people are to be hired by the end of 2010.

The center will serve as a back office support hub for UniCredit's German and Austrian units HypoVereinsbank AG and Bank Austria.

The bank says Szczecin's location near the Polish-German border and a population with German language skills were key factors for selecting it as a location.

UniCredit declined Friday to state the value of the investment, but the Polish state Information and Investment Agency put it at 18.5 million zlotys ($6.2 million; euro4.6 million).
