Even porn industry hit by slumping economy

NEW YORK - JANUARY 08: A man passes by an adult video store January 8, 2009 in New York. According to reports, Porn industry leaders Larry Flynt and Joe Francis are asking for five billion dollars of government bailout money because the industry has been hit hard by the U.S. economic woes.

— The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation estimates that in an average year the adult entertainment industry — which is headquartered primarily in Southern California — registers total sales of $12.6 billion.

Recently Larry Flynt, head of the Hustler empire, and Joe Francis, the man behind the “Girls Gone Wild” series, requested a $5 billion bailout from Congress.

Is it that bad out there?

The rest of the nation is reeling from a severe economic downturn. Yet the conventional wisdom about the adult entertainment business is that it is recession-proof.

And that thinking is consistent with the behavior of mainstream Hollywood. In times of economic difficulty throughout history — even during the Great Depression — people still found the relatively small sums of money to pay for movies and keep their spirits up.

This time in the adult industry, though, it may be different, partly because of the current conditions and partly because of the drift by consumers toward new options.

“They are definitely struggling,” said Jack Kyser, an economist with the LACEDC. “They are subject to piracy like the mainstream industry is, and that siphons revenue away. Then there are a lot of amateurs in the online industry, which is growing rapidly, and they don’t charge for it.

“The industry is really seeing a change in their business model.”

AVN Media Network, the most prominent overseer of the business, publishes trade publications for the adult entertainment industry and puts on trade shows. Paul Fishbein, chairman of AVN, is entering his 27th year in the business, “and this is the first time I can honestly say the adult business is not recession-proof.”

“Everybody I’m talking to says the business is down anywhere from 20 to 30 percent,” he explained. “That’s in line with the rest of the economy. People in the retail sector are down anywhere from 10 to 40 percent.”

Why buy the cow ...
While the recession has something to do with it, Fishbein said, the availability of cheaply made adult fare online is cutting into the cash flow for traditional outlets and establishments.

“There’s enough free porn on the Internet that, if you don’t care about quality, you can get what you want,” Fishbein said. “Plus the DVD business put out 13,000 new releases last year. That’s just too much.

“There’s too much stuff out there. The economy is bad. And there is a lot of free porn. So it’s a perfect storm that is affecting everybody’s business.”

Yet two of the more notable names in adult entertainment seem to be weathering that tempest at least adequately, for the time being.

Even though Francis joined with Flynt in asking Congress for a handout — whether jokingly, half-jokingly, seriously, or all of the above — he is comforted by the fact that “Girls Gone Wild” is a recognized brand with an ardent following.

“We offer reality product. We don’t do hardcore,” he said. “We’re heavily advertised. There’s a comfort zone in choosing ‘Girls Gone Wild.’ We’re No. 1 in all categories.”

Francis’ operation benefits from the fact that it doesn’t have to pay actresses, or only on rare occasions. Low overhead, more profit. Also, “Girls Gone Wild” can be sold in retail outlets that won’t sell hardcore pornography, another advantage.

What Francis is more upset about than the current economy is the frequent pirating that occurs with his product. “We’re facing what the music business faced a few years ago,” he said. “These sites are stealing our content. We want copyright laws enforced.”

Vivid Entertainment Group deals mostly in adult films and has had stars like Tera Patrick, Jenna Jameson, Briana Banks and Savanna Samson on its marquee. Its president, Steven Hirsch, said his company also depends on loyal customers who want high-quality material.

“We’re fortunate. We have a brand,” he said. “People know who we are. Our girls work exclusively for us. For the past 25 years we’ve had the reputation of producing quality movies.”

But his business has also been affected by both the current economy and developments in the marketplace, he said. “The DVD business is down about 30 percent from year to year,” he said. “When it comes to adult movies now, people go online. So we’re focusing on the vivid.com subscription Web site. We’re also looking to new technologies, adult entertainment on cell phones, all of the emerging businesses that will help make up for the loss on the DVD side.”

Both Francis and Hirsch said they didn’t expect any layoffs in their businesses, nor have they cut back on production. But they’re still feeling the pinch.

“I never thought the adult industry was recession-proof,” Hirsch said, “but it seemed in the past we could hang in there. This time, though, we’re dealing with a downturn in DVD sales at the same time there is an economic downturn.”

Of course, in the adult business, like any business, there is the small businessman, the little guy. Rob Rotten is an adult actor, director and producer and head of Punx Productions. When he makes a film, he said, “I have my fingers in everything, including post production and box covers.”

“We’re in a transition stage,” said Rotten, who has been in the business for nine years. “I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing, recession or not. It was bound to happen. And I wouldn’t blame it totally on amateur sites.”

The Northern California-based Rotten believes the adult entertainment business has been hurt by opportunists who try to produce low-quality films and charge exorbitant sums in order to make a quick buck. “It’s a lot of low-budget gonzo stuff released into an oversaturated market,” he said. “I think the general public just got sick of paying $49.95 for a poorly edited, poorly shot, poorly made video.”

As opposed to many who were hit unexpectedly by the severity of the downturn, Rotten said he was ready. “I knew there would be a backlash and I prepared for it,” he said. “I’ve downsized and I limit the number of movies I make a year.”

Rotten offered a tip that could probably apply to just about any struggling business with a product in today’s economy. “The movies I put out and are affiliated with, we actually care about them,” he said. “Even though it’s an adult movie, I try to make the best movie I can within my allotted budget.

“There are some companies that are doing better now than they were three years ago, because they never let go of the quality aspect. They’re not just shipping wood.”

I work for a corporate company that owns and manages adult stores across the country, and we have had layoffs  -- business is definitely down and the traffic in the stores has diminished. I used to see a lot of purchases of anywhere from $150 -200 dollars at one time. Now, there are lots of arcade cards, bottles of lube, and a Mr. Happy!

Hey everyone, the porn industry needs a stimulation package to be inserted immediately to end this flaccidity!

I guess with bill clinton having his records in public, there is bound to be a drop-off in sales.

Why not seek pleasure from a real person? Research shows that people who become addicted to porn have difficulty performing in real life situations. It appears the people have spoken...real life wins out over lame attempts to arouse. Intimacy is much more rewarding....time to take another look at your partner and reignite the flame.

The porn industry (with porn stars and pornos) is being killed by the internet NOT the economy. Why anyone would buy porn when it is a mouse-click away is beyond me.

        Layoffs in the porn industry.

        Nuff said.

Not saying, but I'm saying, all this stuff is available online for free, and people have always felt a lil leery going to a porn shop.  Not hard to see this coming.

eh, it's an industry like any other.  If they start laying off talent you may see a rise in prostitution.

How do you know the economy is deflating, becoming flacid, having a Viagra moment, in need of a stimulus package?

When men will sooner watch Sex in The City hoping for a sex scene than put up for a Flynt video.

When a man will come home early, instead of going to a strip club, to watch his wife undress.

Will get up early to watch his wife take a shower/bath.

Will get busy around the house hoping to get busy in the bedroom.

Watch anything that mentions 'breast' or 'porn' in it.

          Suddenly becomes witty.

          Suddenly becomes sensitive and attentive.

          Start laughing at her  jokes.

Clean out the garage and the basement... to find his "magazines" and "flicks".

Start reading romance novels for the sex bits......

Subject: Fw: Another Crook In Washington

              'SNOPES' VALIDATES THE BELOW FACTS:

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's home district includes San Francisco.

Star-Kist Tuna's headquarters are in San Francisco, Pelosi's home district.

Star-Kist is owned by Del Monte Foods and is a major contributor to Pelosi.

Star-Kist is the major employer in American Samoa employing 75% of the
              Samoan workforce.

Paul Pelosi, Nancy 's husband, owns $17 million dollars of Del Monte stock.

In January, 2007 when the minimum wage was increased from $5.15 to $7.25,
Pelosi had American Samoa exempted from the increase so Del Monte would not
have to pay the higher wage. This would make Del Monte products less
              expensive than their competition's.

Last week when the huge bailout bill was passed, Pelosi added an earmark to
the final bill adding $33 million dollars for an 'economic development
              credit in American Samoa'.

Pelosi has called the Bush Administration 'CORRUPT' ? ?

How do you spell 'HYPOCRITE' ? ?

EVERY AMERICAN SHOULD GET THIS E-MAIL.

Since you brought it up, I actually went to snopes.com and looked at the article. They were unable to find any evidence of a direct link between Pelosi and the decision to exclude American Samoa from the minimum wage legislation. The exemption was actually pushed for by Samoa's congressional delegate Eni F. H. Faleomavaega. Also most news accounts DO NOT support the claim that the exemption came about because "Del Monte is a major contributor to Pelosi". There was also no confirmation of the claim that Pelosi's husband owned $17 million in Del Monte stock.

In other words, if you are going to post info that is reportedly on snopes.com, try doing a little research and finding out exactly what it says first before scattering "information" that's only partially accurate!

I think that it is totally ridiculous for Flynt to even ask for a bailout.  It's one thing for car companies as a car is a necessary part of daily life where a porn magazine, movie or toys are not.  (Don't get me wrong, I'm not a prude.....I enjoy toys and fun like others).  Geesh....what is this world coming to?

Divine cleansing you say? Did God have his divine hand in the worldwide economic crisis unleashed by the greed of Wallstreet, the sub-prime mess and Ponzi-schemes too? So I guess Bernie Madoff and all the other crooks are God's angels!?

So all those made homeless by foreclosures, down-sizing, tax incentives for outsourced jobs to India, retirement funds and stocks made worthless etc are all part of this 'divine cleansing'? Is that like 'ethnic cleansing'? Just random retribution violence, delivered like an atom bomb?

WOW! But a comment like that is to be expected at some point on a discussion like this. I'm not a big fan of porno products, but I suspect the big party in Hollywood might just be winding down a bit. It is my experience that many of the 'porno-stars' use porno movies to promote and enhance the value of their cottage industry of escorting and making appearances at clubs and dancing for tips. I think the alleged divine retribution may just make the market a bit stiffer for competition, pushing the marginal or sloppy ones with issues (those with attitudes and drug-problems) out of the business. I deal a lot with construction, and in good times one puts up with a lot of flakiness. In bad times, the flakes are the first to go! It just seems logical to me!

Speaking of DIVINE, the infamous battleship! I remember he/she/it well with a floating Mr. Hankey in the pool or something. What a classic moment! A human Ms. Piggy!

I suspect those odd things are what the 'pious' call perversion or sick filth. Somebody alerted me to the fact that most of the holier-than-thou characters like to preach about 'filth, perversion, and sick minds' because their own mind fights a constant battle. Case in point: I know this dreadful crackhead who left his obnoxious legacy and his medium sized American city for his momma's small town by the gulf, because 'he needed to get away from that BAD city with all its drugs'. Needless to say, in the small town he now just pilfers his mother's Xanax prescriptions and washes them down with plenty of alcohol chasers. You can take the pig out of the sty, but you can take the sty out of the pig! Same goes for porn addicts and moralists hunting for wood in airport rest-rooms.

Sounds like another industry caught between a cock and a hard place! Time for a telethon! A rally for a Nevada retirement community in the desert might be of the order; one for 'barely used porn performers'. They can gaze across the horizon and see the acres of moth-balled commercial airplanes, acres of unsold cars, and foreclosed homes as far as the eye can see... it is rough trade everywhere!

But it sounds like a buyer's market for consumers, now joined by bins full of fine fornication products at $9.99, as we may pay for 'Titanic' at Walmart. And lots of sloppy stuff for $4.99. Titties for pennies on the dollar! $4.99 - udderly ridiculous!

Why are we even supposed to care about this? Sounds like the only economy it's hurting is L.A., who is by no means representative of the rest of the country. Hmm, porn stars and directors and producers may have to actually get a real job? If you can tell me why thats bad, please do. I'm not anti porn, but I hardly see it as crucial to the American economy.

So the porn industry is inches away from coming undone? Wow, what a nasty problem. They better get humping if they want to survive. But then why shouldn’t they hook into a little of that government cash? Why shouldn’t they pander to Congress, a lot of other boobs do? It’ll be a neat trick if they can pull it off. After all, Wall Street walked away with a wad, why shouldn’t they? It’s all in the pubic interest isn’t it?

It is kind of a hairy problem though.

Rich you must be talking about the Republican agenda because that's all the do, if they don't like what their hearing about their favorite candidate ,say Palin for instance, they just blame it all on the "liberal media" never stopping to think that maybe what their hearing just may happen to be the truth! Imagine that. Bush or Sarah Palin actually acting stupid? Say it isn't so?? It has to be the medias fault, Right???

I don't get it. There was an article in the local paper saying that high demand products like the Wii and the iPhone are still commanding premium prices and selling out. Why does that not also apply to porn? Also, porn does not need a stimulus package, it is already stimulating packages!

Because there is only one iphone and only one Wii.  There are fifty billion versions of porn available, from the truly tame to the nauseating.  You can't browse the web and get the iphone or the Wii for free, you have to go to a store and pay for it.  I'm sure the kids whos parents bought their toys, when they are tired of playing, are just going online and watching all the free porn they can stand, but that doesn't help the people who make a living from it.

I've seen my share of porn. Japanese seems to be the best, having beautiful women and quality videos, free for the asking. American porn, on the other hand, seems to have women who look like street sluts.

I used to salute the flag and pledge allegiance when I was in school, say a prayer,  NO MORE. Kids can't say anything anymore when it comes to religion. The athiests have gotten thier way, and no one has tried to stop them.  God help us and God bless America for all it has stood for till now.

Well Obama actually thinks that Nonbelievers are in the same catagory as Christians He also  said in a speech last winter that "America is no longer a Christian nation." so yeah go right ahead and hate Bush but Bush left America with Christian principles. Such as keeping marriage as one man and one woman, He was against partial birth abortions and he maintained the "don't ask, don't tell policy in regards to gays and lesbians in the military. Obama is already going to overturn that. So there are going to be fewer people in the military. Plus, he has ordered Gitmo closed with no plan put in place first. I am feeling less safe. Mark my words there will be another attack! So get prepared for it!

I don't care what your political, religious or moral views are. This article about people losing their jobs (that are legal) and a segment of the entertainment industry struggling.

Please lets have a little compassion for the unemployed. No one is asking you to like porn, just show little sympathy that EVERYONE is struggling.
