JERUSALEM — The musician formerly known as Cat Stevens released a charity song on Monday to help the children of Gaza.

The United Nations said the London-born Yusuf Islam recorded a rendition of the George Harrison song "The Day the World Gets Round," along with the German bassist and former Beatles collaborator Klaus Voorman.

All proceeds from the song will be donated to the U.N. agency in charge of Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, and to the nonprofit group Save the Children to be directed to aiding Gaza residents.

Gaza officials say 280 of the 1,285 Palestinians killed in the three-week Israeli offensive were children. Children make up 56 percent of Gaza's 1.4 million people. The offensive aimed at stopping rocket fire by Gaza's Hamas rulers into southern Israel.

Islam explained on his Web site that he hoped the song would "help remind people of the immense legacy of love, peace and happiness we can share when we get round to looking at mankind's futile wars and prejudices, and start to change our foolish ways."

UNRWA said the donation would help it continue its vital work in the Gaza Strip.

"This is a fantastically generous act and we hope to reach new audiences in bringing a message of hope at a time when Gaza so badly needs it," said Christopher Gunness, an UNRWA spokesman.

Cat Stevens sold 60 million albums in a prolific musical career that included the hit songs "Wild World," "The First Cut is the Deepest" and "Peace Train." In 1977, he converted to Islam, changed his name and largely distanced himself from popular music.

Israeli authorities have barred Islam twice from entering the country on suspicion he gave money to charity groups linked to Islamic militants. He has denied the accusation. He raised controversy in 1989 by making comments construed as supporting Iran's Islamic edict calling for the death of author Salman Rushdie. He said later he was misunderstood.

Throughout the years, Islam recorded a handful of spoken word records on Islamic topics, some with percussion. In 2006, he made a mini-comeback to pop music recording his first album since his conversion titled "An Other Cup."

We need a "two state" solution former President Jimmy Carter said on NBC's "Today Show" this morning.  He represents the "Carter Center" which works toward peaceful solutions to problems affecting many different peoples, "river blindness" in Africa, etc. so I voted this one up.

Mr. Islam was not only barred from entering Israel, but also from entering the U.S., an outrageous move that was never explained satisfactorily.

However, he was not "alleged" to have supported the fatwa against Mr. Rushdie, he did support it. Then years later, after consumers voiced their anger and boycotted his records, Mr. Islam pulled a flip-flop.

This is a bold and generous move and I support the effort. Raising money to help re-build Gaza and help refugees is a noble gesture.

But Mr. Islam is an odd fish--a Greek in Britain who left the Christian faith and embraced Islam at a moment in history when his fellow Greeks faced slaughter in Cyprus by the Turks. I've never been able to figure out his reasoning.

Recently I saw a greatest hits compilation cd by Cat Stevens at J&R Music World in NYC marked down to only $6.99. It had all the songs I liked.

But I simply couldn't bring myself to buy it...

Oh, yeah. Send more money to Hamas so they can use it to buy more bombs and rockets. Give them more money so they can indoctrinate their children to hate Jews, to hate Americans, to hate non-Muslims. The only peace that Islam believes in is a sharp stick with a dead non-Muslim dangling from it.

Children do not ask to be displaced from their homes, maimed, and killed by war. Children are among the greatest tragedies of war. How can anyone object to Yusaf Islam or anyone else doing a benefit for the sake of children? I think I'll put some cat Stevens on my Ipod and enjoy his creative writings and soothing voice. Maybe someday we can all sing, "Morning has Broken" with new understanding of cooperation and tolerance for each other.

I agree Padre. It's just that most people feel that the money wont reach the kids who need it. A lot of charities end up using funds for paying people that work for the charity itself. Or funds get directed somewhere else. Sometimes the people in need of the funds are lucky if they see one dime of every dollar donated. The U.S. constantly sends help in the way of food, water, clothes, and medical supplys to nations that hate  us. And what do people in charge of distributing the goods do? They spraypaint over the words " from U.S.A." on the crates so that they can continue to brainwash the needy into "Biting the hand that feeds them" or helps them. Or they distribute half of whats donated to feed Hamas and other terrorist organizations. That,s why I find it hard to give, specialy to a country that hates us. If there was absolute proof that the aid went to the people in need...then I'm for it. But for now, I'd rather give twenty dollars to the homeless guy down town, Or buy the poor guy standing outside of McDonalds begging for coffee money a full meal and toss him a five so he can eat something later. At least then I know that my whole donation is going to an actual person in need.

They can spray anyhting they want over the labels if the food goes to the people who need it. Food should not be used as a tool to gain support for the U.S. nor should medicine or any other sort of aid. Giving needs to be done in a plain envelope or box.

I'd rather buy Peace Train than some RAP CRAP by Young Jeezy--then you know the money is going back to the hood to kill some little kid bystander in a drive buy.

I never was a Cat Stevens fan. Not because of his faith, I just didn't care for his music.

What's up with showing us your left hand??? I thought that was taboo???

He also professes to live a frugal life.... that's an expensive guitar hanging off that shoulder...

I was told the boxer Mohammad Ali got quite an international name for himself after America dumped bad infant formula on the world. Ali invested in good infant formula and it was marketed with his face on it to reassure people it was not the "bad American" formula. He became the most widely recognized "American" in the Third World. He also invested in desert fighting vehicles I was told by a social anthropologist who had spent his high school and fieldwork time in the largest Muslim country in the world, Indonesia before attending school in Chicago where he told me he first moved into an apartment near the "Loop" and had a strange feeling he was being watched. After a few weeks he asked a neighbor and as it turned out he was living in the apartment formally occupied by a "Black Panther".
