— Coca-Cola Corp. is ending its almost 25-year experiment with the "Classic" label on its flagship cola, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

The newspaper said Atlanta-based Coke has quietly removed the word from the label of 16-ounce bottles of soda being sold in some southeastern U.S. markets. Quoting a report in trade publication Beverage Digest, the paper said the move is part of a broader plan to polish the brand's image and make it more attractive to young consumers who may see the "Classic" label as too stodgy.

A Coke spokesman couldn't be reached immediately for comment, the paper said.

In 1985, Coke introduced New Coke in an attempt to boost flagging sales. Although it had been taste-tested in many markets the new brand failed and after 79 days, Coke brought back the old formula with the "Classic" label.

An 8 pack in place of a 12 pk. 18 cans in a case instead of 24. Better come up with a super marketing plan. Im switching to wine. Cheaper!

agreed bob! i saw that the other day...an 18 pack on sale at the same price the 24 pack was. did the store really think they would sell any of the 18 packs? dumb but not as dumb as the soda companies! i can live without it or drink flavored generics at a lower prce.

I thought I was the only one who thought that Coke had a lot of balls to try and sell an 18 pack for the price of a 24 pack. I crossed Coke off my list when they stopped putting their product on sale in supermarkets. Until they reduce their prices, they can urinate up a rope.

The reason coke changed the formula to "new coke" and then brought it back 3 months later as "classic" was a ploy to replace regular sugar in the soda with high fructose corn syrup. They simply made a sweeter version of the beverage to distract people to the change. Then when they brought out "classic" it was slightly sweeter than the coke I never had a chance to drink being only 25 years old now. The reason they did it is because High fructose Corn Syrup is drastically less expensive than cane sugar. We all got fooled! It still tastes better than pepsi, especially with bourbon or rum in it.

How about they use sugar instead of HFCS and market that angle?

Here, here!! If they want to appeal to younger consumers, who may tend to be more health conscious, then drop the HFCS junk. Its bad for your health.

There is also a good argument that the market for HFCS distorts the commodities markets by providing money to the big agriculture companies so they can pay expensive lobbyists and buy political favor for their corporate welfare.

I'm not surprised at Coke downsizing their 12 and 24 packs. Are less volume cans and bottles next? With the economy in the toilet, I'm sure we can expect more smaller product packaging by all of the food and beverage industry.

have you looked at coffee cans (39 ounces down to 32 or 33 ounces), bagged noodles (16 ounces down to 12 ounces), salad dressing, chips...you name it and it has shrunk but still costs the same or more!

Ice cream. too. Check out the Breyer's next time you're at the market. They have reduced the volume by around 15% and raised the price! We just have to be extremely careful consumer's. Read labels and check weights and measures of any processed food product you buy. We buy very little processed food and are saving money weekly. We make our own ice cream in 20 minutes using the Cuisinart Ice Cream freezer. Tastes better than anything bought in the store. We don't buy any soft drinks because the cost is prohibitive.

They can try any marketing ploy they want but the soda will never taste as good as it did when it was sold in a glass bottle. The cans and plastic has taken something away from the taste.

Mostly its the High Fructose Corn Syrup that doesn't taste as good as real sugar. But the HFCS is cheaper, so the beverage makers use it instead. Unfortunately its bad for your health and it screws with the market because of entitlements for the producers that they have lobbied our legislators to make.

whatever-815315 you are right. Glass bottled coke is best, and you can still find 6-paks in some stores but they are only 8oz. bottles and perty spendy. I treat myself once a year and get one.

I gotta say I love my Coca Cola. It is one of many of my vices. I take offence that they are gonna try and stick it to us, like all other groceries, and do some size shifting, however.

Everyone is out to screw us.

You can get the COKE without HFCS during Passover, Look for it at the supermarket. It isn't cheap though. Anout a buck a can.

The formula Coke brought back was not the original formula. It was close but lacked one of the sugars in the original.

It also is definitely not the "original." The original Coke had real cocaine in it to begin with!

They used it as a ploy to switch from sugar to HFCS. You can still find Coke with real sugar in Mexico - they sell this version in glass bottles in our local Costco here in the US.

You may be able to find it at Whole Foods, too. I know they sell the orginal formula Dr. Pepper that has real cane sugar.

They sell coke with real sugar in Mexico and Europe all the time, even in glass bottles! I live in a border town, even the Mexican markets in my town sell it. Your can also find it in areas with large Jewish populations near Passover as HCFS isn't kosher for that time.

Honestly it does taste sweeter and has a more cola flavor with real sugar

If it is a classic Coke it should have cane sugar in it. If you live where you can find Coke "Kosher for Passover" then you can taste Coke that is "the real thing".

I personally have stopped drinking colas that use high fructose corn syrup instead of real sugar.

You must have been paying attention to the Corn Refiners Assoc. propaganda then! Did you hear about mercury being found in several different items with HFCS? I'd prefer good old natural sugar over genetically modified, mercury-laced HFCS.

Coke that is produced in Mexico under license from the Coca-Cola company is still made with real sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup. You can buy the imported variety in the U.S. at Mexican supermarkets. It DOES taste different, certainly not as sweet as the "Coke Classic" that we've been drinking for the last 25 years.

As I remember (and I could be a little foggy about it) they came up with New Coke that was sweeter and tasted more like Pepsi. Pepsico, Inc. then gave all their employees the day off in celebration, taking that as a"white flag" fom CocaCola.

So the reason New Coke was created was that CocaCola was changing sugars?

On the other hand, if they took Coca-Cola off the label Burger shack might go out of business. They do have the best cokes in town you know!
