— The Southern California woman who gave birth to octuplets last week told TODAY’s Ann Curry in an exclusive interview that growing up as an only child, she had always dreamed of having “a huge family.” She also denied charges that she was irresponsible to have so many babies — especially with six other children already at home.

“People feel, you know, this woman is being completely irresponsible and selfish to bring these children in the world without a clear source of income and enough help to raise them,” Curry told Nadya Suleman in a segment that aired Friday on TODAY. “The world outside is saying, ‘What are you doing?’ ”

“I know I'll be able to afford them when I'm done with my schooling,” the 33-year-old single mom replied. Calm, poised and articulate in the glare of the media spotlight, Suleman added: “If I was just sitting down watching TV and not being as determined as I am to succeed and provide a better future for my children, I believe that would be considered, to a certain degree, selfish.”

‘I love my children’
Suleman, who said she holds each premature infant 45 minutes each day, said she was hoping to have one more child after having six previous children, all of whom are under the age of 7. She said she had six embryos implanted, two of which resulted in twins. Curry reported that although Suleman has received disability payments from the state of California, she said she refuses to accept welfare payments. Suleman and her children live with her mother, Angela Suleman.

“All I wanted was children. I wanted to be a mom. That's all I ever wanted in my life. I love my children,” she told Curry.

Curry said that Suleman said she intends to return to college in the fall to complete a master’s degree in counseling. Suleman had worked in a state mental hospital from 1997-2006, but spent much of the time after 1999 on disability after injuring her back in a riot at the facility.

Suleman said she is a good mother.

“I'm providing myself to my children. I'm loving them unconditionally, accepting them unconditionally,” she told Curry. “Everything I do, I'll stop my life for them and be present with them. And hold them. And be with them. And how many parents do that? I'm sure there are many that do, but many don't. And that's unfortunate. That is selfish.”

‘Phenomenal risk’
Suleman said she was fully aware of the risks of carrying eight fetuses. “Those are my children, and that’s what was available,” she said. “It’s a gamble.”

In a separate segment, NBC’s chief medical editor, Dr. Nancy Snyderman, said the gamble didn’t end with the live births of all eight babies.

“That risk is not only to mom — her uterus can rupture and she can die — there’s a phenomenal risk to eight babies. Eight babies, by definition, cannot be born normal weight and robust,” Snyderman told TODAY’s Matt Lauer after watching Suleman’s interview with Curry.

She explained: “They’re going to watch these kids very carefully for eating problems, growing [problems], and then seizures, jaundice, heart problems, lung problems, blindness, developmental delays — there’s a laundry list of things. Long term, because some of these children will be physically or mentally challenged, there’s a looming price tag out here. The hospital bill alone will run $1.5 to $3 million. Forget about getting to college; just to get through special-needs stuff — it’s going to have to come from somewhere, either the taxpayers of California or her family or her church or the hospital. But she can’t do it alone.”

NBC contributor and psychiatrist Dr. Gail Saltz added that there will be emotional issues to deal with as well. “Undoubtedly these eight children are going to have issues: at the minimum, the issue of neglect,” Saltz told Lauer.

“Obviously, she’s saying she’s going to love them, but there are 14 children and [only] one of her,” Saltz continued. “There’s going to be an absence of some emotional needs. There will probably be developmental delays at best in these children; maybe learning disabilities. There are going to be major issues that they’re going to need various therapies for.”

Childhood dream
Suleman said she went to the same in vitro fertilization clinic to have all 14 of her children. All were conceived with donated sperm from the same father, Suleman said.

Suleman told Curry that the father is a bit overwhelmed right now, but she is hoping that he will want to get to know his children when he is ready.

“How did an only child end up with 14 children?” Curry asked Nadya Suleman.

“That was always a dream of mine, to have a large family, a huge family, and I just longed for certain connections and attachments with another person that I really lacked, I believe, growing up,” she replied.

The entire exclusive interview will air along with exclusive video of the babies on TODAY Monday, Feb. 9, and on Dateline at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

“Describe what you felt you lacked within,” Curry said.

“Feeling of self and identity,” Suleman replied. “I didn't feel as though, when I was a child, I had much control of my environment. I felt powerless. And that gave me a sense of predictability. Reflecting back on my childhood, I know it wasn't functional. It was pretty dysfunctional, and whose isn't?”

Saltz later opined to Lauer that Suleman’s statement reveals emotional issues. “I think she’s in a bit of denial here and quite defensive, because in fact she does talk about the fact that this has been her life’s mission: to have babies, have babies, have babies. There’s an obsession to this, and I think it’s quite disturbing,” the psychiatrist said.

“When you don’t have a connection in childhood, you go see a therapist,” she added. “You don’t have 14 babies.”

An ethical debate
While the world celebrated the birth of fairly healthy octuplets, public sentiment has shifted as it's been revealed Suleman also has six other children, ages 2 to 7, and is a single parent who conceived all 14 of her children through in vitro fertilization.

The divorced single mom told Curry she tried to get pregnant for years before finally succeeding.

“I went through about seven years of trying, through artificial insemination, through medication. And all of which was unsuccessful. And then the first IVF procedure from that facility — it was successful. And then I just kept going in.”

While it hasn't been revealed which doctor implanted eight embryos at once into Suleman, the octuplets' birth has sparked an ethical debate in the medical community.

Dr. David Adamson, former president of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, said he was bracing for some backlash against his specialty.

In 30 years of practice, “I have never provided fertility treatment to a woman with six children,” or ever heard of a similar case, said Adamson, director of Fertility Physicians of Northern California.

‘Most sought-after mom in the world’
Suleman was released from Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center in the early morning hours on Thursday, avoiding reporters and photographers, said hospital spokeswoman Nancy Tovar-Huxen. Suleman's publicist, Mike Furtney, told The Associated Press that she was staying at “an undisclosed location” where she was confident she could avoid reporters and photographers.

Later in the day, she sat down for her interview with Curry. NBC said that the network did not pay Suleman for the interview.

Furtney said the mother was still evaluating potential offers, including possible book and TV deals, and might do other interviews later.

”There are lots of potential opportunities out there and she's looking at them carefully,” he said.

Meanwhile, hospital officials said the six boys and two girls born to Suleman on Jan. 26 were in good condition Thursday. The eight babies are the longest known surviving octuplets in the world.

Furtney said Suleman is “feeling great” and looking forward to being reunited with her octuplets, who are expected to remain in the hospital for several more weeks.

“She's happy to be out of the hospital, although she misses her children,” he said. “She can't wait until they join her.”

Joann Killeen, Furtney’s partner, told TODAY earlier this week that her client is being deluged with offers for book deals, TV shows and other business proposals, but has not decided what she might do other than care for her children, her newly hired spokeswoman said Monday.

“She's the most sought-after mom in the world right now,” Killeen said. “Everyone wants to talk to her.”

The country's first set of octuplets was born to Nkem Chukwu of Texas on Dec. 20, 1998. A week later, the tiniest of the infants died of heart and lung failure. The surviving seven siblings celebrated their 10th birthday in December.

Mother of ONE!!!!

I agree. A woman who cannot make an emotional connection with an adult in a normal healthy relationship has 14 children to carry her problems into the world and to be little cash cows. Disgusting. Any retailer or network who encourages this sick woman by paying her for her exploitation of huan beings should be boycotted.

I'm glad that those precious babies are doing fine. They are in no way to blame for this circus. But.... does this woman have ANY idea what she is in for? Does she even understand the ENORMITY of how complicated this situation is, and how much help is going to be required to care for ALL these little babies? Or did this mother even think that far ahead?

If this woman was mentally stable, she would realize that she is not the only one of concern here.... but it's all those precious little babies, who can end up paying for their mother's "unfillable void".

For the doctors who performed this fertility procedure, why is it that this woman was not given a complete psycological exam BEFORE this fertilization. Her interview with Ann Curry simply SCREAMS of trying to fill a void, which apparently she cannot and have not been able to fill, and heaven help us if she decides that 14 children is not enough.

Where are the medical ethics here? There should be serious ramifications for ANY fertility facility who assist in these types of experiments.

She didn't have "predictability" as a child, and she thinks 14 kids will be a "normal, loving, functional" family? Seriously?

So she felt the need to create a baseball team in order to do this? She needs serious therapy, these are not the ideas and dreams of a normal, mature ADULT, but a seriously whacked out hormonal teenager.

So, she goes out to a fertility clinic and gets invitro and over time has six kids. Humm...is that not a "huge family" that she longed for? NOT!!! She then gets invitro with eight embryos!, and delivers them, for the purpose of what? She even admits to being a dysfunctional child and insinuates that we all are, PLEASE! The doctors at the facilities that assisted a single mother with no JOB and living with her parents should have their medical licence's revoked. What I want to know is, where did she get the money to have this all done? If the taxpayers somehow paid for this she should be forced to repay that money and if she can't she should go to prison.

I think these kids should be taken away from her and adopted out so they might have a chance at a normal life because they are not going to get one with this woman as their mother, that you can take to the bank!

Oh no- she states she did have a predictable childhood... Which most child psychologists would agree is a good thing and provides a stable environment where children can explore, experiment, and grow from a solid base...

How does a single mom of 6 afford to have IVF? What kind of insurance does she have? I a married and mother of three, working full time and can barely afford to live let alone come up with thousands of dollars for a wish. Who is crazier, the mother or the doctors that implanted her.

Where did she get the kind of money to invetro done six times? She has been on worker's comp for 9 years obviously it wasn't that serious of an injury if she can have 14 kids during that time. And you wonder the state of California has a budget deficit and she still is sucking us dry. Now not will California but all of America be paying for these kids. She is a disgrace. She is looking for nothing but handouts. I would not watch any show, book or any product associated with this baby machine.

Why isn't she at the hospital NICU spending time with her babies, instead of off shmoozing with Ann Curry? If not at the NICU, why isn't she with her OTHER 6 kids? Why didn't TODAY have them on, too? PR team? Why would a caring and compassionate mother need a team of propaganda spinners?

This woman is a nightmare. Why is anyone giving this hag the time of day?

Dysfunctional family, my donkey!!!!!!!!!!

I had a dysfunctional family, carrying at least one, sometimes more BEATINGS a day. We are not talking about spankings, I mean BEATINGS that left me bruised and bloody. No way in hell would I do something like this. There are many, many people that came from dysfunctional families and they are not out there whoring themselves and tiny babies to the media. This woman is the lowest of the animal kingdom. I sincerely hope California takes these kids away from her so they can have some kind of decent life, which this THING will never be able to give them. She also is in desperate need of a hysterectomy.

Now that she has had time to think up a story that she hopes will sit well with the public, she is ready to con us all. I for one, am not falling for it and fully intend to send Email to Ms. Curry and let her hold it with both hands.

This woman should be ashamed of herself. Having babies is not a sport. She is now responsible for 14 lives, and I seriously doubt if she has the mental capacity to assume that responsiblity. I sure want to thank her for giving all of us taxpayers 14 more mouths to feed. Someone please explain to this idiot what parenthood is all about.

This womans says she "longed for certain attention and attachments that she believes she did not get growing up". This means she was unable to connect with people and didn't feel like a complete person. The sad thing is this woman is using babies to fill a hole in her (which is a personality disorder-that should be treated) just like severly obese people use food as the source to fill the hole in their life, drug addicts and alcoholics use those substances for the same reasons. This woman is using children to feed her personal addiction to being needed and wanted. These children have a burden placed upon them to "fill the hole" in her life. It seems that not one, not two not six could do it so what makes her think 14 will? A psychiatrist is in order and has been for a long time. I am sure once the AMA figures out who this doctor is he will be up on some ethics charges. Just by her statements to Ann Curry she is admitting she has problems and certainly isn't addressing them she is using these children as her "drug of choice". On top of the fact that the taxpayers of California have been footing the bill for her and her children for more than 7 years and it looks like they are on the hook for 18 more years.......sick.

She has a predictable childhood in a dysfunctional family? Does she even listen to what she is spouting, or is she just so tickled to be in the spotlight that she doesn't care that she isn't making any sense? If her childhood was so dysfunctional, why would she have 14 kids and raise them in her parents 'dysfunctional' home?

Now those poor babies (and her 6 other victims) will be the ones that will have to pay the price so that she can feel 'fulfilled', which to me reads 'getting excessive attention'. Personally, I won't buy any books, watch her on TLC or Discovery, or do anything that would encourage her in her sick addiction. If 6 wasn't enough, do we really think that 14 will be? Healthy large families are not the product of selfish parents wanting to be 'fulfilled'.

If she had enough money to have all the IVF done, she had plenty of money to adopt a whole house-full of orphaned/abandoned/needy children. That would be true fulfillment. Selfish, selfish, selfish!!!

I always thought that having children should be an expression of love, not a form of self-therapy. A single woman giving birth to 14 children, in quick succession, and eight at once, isn't a matter of love; it's a pathetic case of irrational narcissism. I pity both the sadly misguided mother and the innocent children in this debacle.

Her dysfunctional childhood has extended over into her adult years as well.

Who in the Hell authorized this travesty at the fertility clinic anyway. Has the medical profession ethics and morals so degenerated that they no longer consider the impact of their spring loaded stupidity?

Anyone wanna bet this wench has no health care insurance and that the taxpayers are paying all the medical bills.

Both the sperm donors and the doctors need to be hauled into court for child support. Maybe that way those so eager to sell the little wigglers would be a little more discriminant about where they sell their wares and the doctors would consider the impact of their efforts.

This woman is obviously mentally ill. These children should be taken from her and placed in loving, foster homes. The payment for their necessities in life should be paid by Dr. Frankensteinwho was playing with his modern technology and ability to 'grow a human....or many more than just one'. The entire strange story will probably pay this obsessive mother millions of dollars in book and movie deals. How sad.

Too sad. She did sound unbalanced in the interview. And well, the fact that she worked in a state mental hospital tells me perhaps being surrounded by mentally unbalanced people caused her to become one herself.

Worse, she is completing a masters degree in counseling--I suggest she see a counselor herself. Oh wait, it's too late for that. *sigh* I feel for the children--how can you give 14 children all of the attention that they truly need? Entirely irresponsible. If anyone should choke on her medical bills it ought to be Kaiser Permanente.

        *sigh*

She wins 160K in a settlement from working at a MENTAL HEALTH facility.

Not enough money for her. She funds plastic surgery, and fertility treatments for additional kids to her already 6 including one special needs child. She gets all the eggs implanted (6) and two eggs result in twins. 8 babies + 6 = 14. Single mother living with her parents, trying to get a master's degree. In this economy, she thinks a mid-30's master degree is going to pay for all those kids needs?

Clearly she did this to score a payday. She should have used that 160K for her continuing education and the care of her 6 count SIX children including a special needs one.

I am disgusted beyond belief on this one. Clearly it is people like her who are helping to ruin America. When will people like her ever get a clue?

I hope one of her classes is moral ethics and if they have a class on common sense she should double up on that and perhaps try to get masters or PHD. Currently, she has none.

And not too surprising the Today show got dupped by this baby factory that only the tax payers will be paying for a long.....long time. Sad for those children......

First, being a child of God as we all are, I must first give thanks that the babies are healthy to this point. Secondly, we all have had some harsh criticism for this woman but she is not to blame here. Do you hold the disabled responsible for their own disabilities..? This is the epitomy of how screwed up our society is... this person needed some serious help a looong time ago. Her parents failed her and our government sets the table for these types of people to function as they do... it was truly upsetting to hear and read about this story but the horse has already left the stable on this one, how are YOU going to see that it doesn't happen again? God bless us all.

We need to move this discussion to a national level and create checks and balances on the effectiveness and importance of parenting and the lack thereof in this country. We have too many people feeling a sense of entitlement because they had a bad childhood or because daddy wasn't there or mommy wasn't there or they didn't love me enough or insert your own excuse... once we are adults, throw all that crap out the window because you gotta pull your own weight. This woman is like a vampire bat sucking the life blood of a big cow(our society), do you blame the bat for wanting blood? Humans aren't born this way, they learn to be this way. Its not her fault. She is what she is because we let her be that way. Don't be a hater. If you want to do something about it, make sure it doesn't happen to you! Love you kids and teach them well! Bring the issue to the forefront and lets help people understand that they don't need to do this to feel complete or fill voids... does anyone think she'd have all these kids if she was happy and well cared for as a child..? I doubt that with certainty. Amen to that!

God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him... (1John 4:16)

So, we the people, payed for these babies and she will keep right on collecting. She actually thinks the public is going to buy a book about this and maybe even a TV show. I will not spend one penny on a book about her and her kids and my TV is not going to be tuned in.

She's a mental basket case and those babies should be taken away from her. She claims a WC back injury and could get pregnant and carry a litter - well, most women have back pain during pregnancy so how can she have a back injury that would be worth that kind of claim and be allowed to have these babies. Someone messed up bigtime by doing the invetro at all. The government should take away their license.

Gee a whole 45 minutes each - wow, Super Mom! Sorry, lady, but there are 1440 minutes in a day and if you treat all your children fairly that means all of 102.85 minutes each so you are already shorting these babies of time. One baby takes more than that amount for proper care in a day all by itself.

45 minutes for each of 8, lets see thats 6 hours... (changing diapers for 8 kids is like painting the golden gate bridge, once you are done its time for another coat)then lets give the other six a half hour (cause they allready know her) thats three + six equals nine hours lets say she spends seven hours sleeping that would make sixteen hours, then an hour getting up and ready for school< (she is a woman)then she goes back to shcool, with a half hour commute to the babysitters( all of them) then half hour to get to school thats eighteen hours.... lunch and bathroom breaks an hour...nineteen......classes to further her education and make a better life for her and her family...three hours... 22 hrs then an hour for the fertility clinic and one hour a day for interviews.... then an hour picking up the kids and making dinner and changing .... oh wait she allready spent that time... okay so the kids get changed once a day weather they need it or not..okay she really could do this thing! you go girl!

your story neglected to tell the readers how she is being investigated for taking $165,000 fraudulently form the governement for disability. NOr does it mention the bankruptcy in her past.

These children should be taken and given up for adoption to parents who could pay for them and she should be put in charge of an daycare

I think she should be nailed for a fraudulent disability claim. I've had a severe back blowout, and I've interacted with enough legitimate back-injury patients to know that there was no way that she would have been able to carry 8 fetuses if she had a truly disabling back injury. Period. Also, did she do absolutely everything to try and fix her back? Fusions, stimulators, or infusion pumps? Painful and extreme surgeries, but still, when you truly have a disabling back injury, you'd do ANYTHING to make the constant pain stop.

Based on her manipulativeness, her lack of empathy (I want this and I don't care who suffers or foots the bill.), her lack of foresight and impulse control, and her obvious need to be the center of lots of people's worlds...I'd say that she has a histrionic personality disorder with a healthy dose of narcissistic and borderline personality disorders. I hate to say it, because the system just sucks for kids, but they should take them while they're young and have a chance to be adopted.

Charlie in Sterling, how can you blame the sperm donor? If it wasn't the sperm of someone she knows, then how is he suppose to know that his sperm was used to give a mentally unstable woman 14 kids, or even these last 8? Sperm banks don't let the Mother know who the sperm donor is. Also if it was someone she knew, maybe he only agreed to donating once for one child and not 6 or 14. Sperm donors are not made to pay child support. If that were the case then there would be no sperm donors, or egg donors.

I also think that she totally conned the state about her back injury. If it was so bad that she couldn't work, how is it that it was not bad enough when it came to having kids? I hope that the state goes after her for the money that they paid her since she committed fraud.

I don't care if she has a hundred children. But BUY and PAY FOR THEM yourself. CARE for them YOURSELF. The care, feeding and general welfare just became the burdon of the taxpayers of California. Her behavior is selfish, one demensional, self involved and borders upon neglectful and pathological. How can any one individual provide the physical, emotional and psychological care required to raise 14 children. Shame on her, and shame on the physician who fertilized her.

This woman has already collected $165000 dollars from the tax payers and now has a hospital bill that will reach two million and she sees this as a good thing.

My suggestion is to remove her children and put them up for adoption and have her reproductive organs removed.

This kind of behavior is one of the reasons so many tax payers are unhappy with welfare

          She is completely irresponsible!

How is it, that someone who is not employed can be allowed to under go such treatment with out a thorough screening???

Key point, unemployed, NO FINANCIAL MEANS TO SUPPORT THESE BABIES!!!!!

That would be a direct call to the CPS.

Let alone, NO TIME to spend with them because she would be working!

Where is her head at, that she believes she can get a job that pays that much?

          Especially in this economy.

I know many people who work very long hours, and have very well paying jobs that would not be able to either spend quality time with them, or not be financially strapped.

She is sick, and using these children as CASH COWS.

I AM NOT AGAINST HAVING that MANY BABIES.

ALL within the confines of a marriage between a man and a woman.

With a sound employment record, showing by experience, they can support a family on their own.

After listening to her speak it is even more convincing she has some very serious problems and I am not referring to the 14 children. Not to be mean but the line that comes to my mind when listening to her talk is "the lights are on but nobody's home". I wished for those poor babies sake that she would have had the counseling that she needed long ago. She is out of touch with reality.

No job, no husband, lives with parents, 14 children to care for, probably receives government assistance, but yet finds the means for cosmetic procedures??? I would consider this beyond selfish, seems more like uncontrolable greed to me!

Ammamtoh, it says in the article that the father (aka sperm donor) is "a bit overwhelmed right now" - so apparently it IS someone she knows. If it was a standard sperm bank donation, the donor would be anonymous. Which of course brings up ANOTHER issue - if the same sperm donor was used for all of the babies, and it's someone who knows the mother, why in the world did he not put his foot down when he heard she was going for a seventh child (which turned out to be a 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th)? Guess what - unless he had an ironclad contract with this woman, HE could be facing having to pay child support for all of the kids. Here's a sick thought for you - is there any possibility that her father was the sperm donor?

I know that I'm feeding into the frenzy by reading these posts and devouring every single news article about her. And that bothers me. But, I just haven't been able to get this story out of my mind since I first heard about it.

I thought that Ms. Suleman was likely to have some serious emotional problems, and when I saw the interview with her, I was sure of it. It was painful to watch: her disfigured face, her complete detachment of reality. Painful.

I have always believed whole-heartedly in reproductive rights, and I still do. As much as I'm against these in vitro procedures, I can sympathize with a woman's desire to bear a child. And, as much as I think Ms. Suleman is a narcissistic, delusional person carrying out a dangerous mission to "fix" some sort of childhood problem, what I worry more about is the state of our world.

She is going to get a ton of money out of this...she is going to be laughing all the way to the bank and we're going to be fuming with anger. At least I know I will. Because she is going to win. And that is what makes me so sad about our world; I'm sad because we have created such a gossip and sensational hungry society that a woman can become an overnight celebrity by having octuplets when she is clearly an unstable and unwell person. We celebrate it! Did you hear Matt Lauer CONGRATULATE Ann Curry twice on landing the interview? I heard it twice in a 5 minute clip. Ann Curry landed an interview with the "most sought-after person in the world." Let's put that on our resume. And we all (myself included) flock to it.

It's a sad, truly sad, sickening, and disheartening story and even sadder state of affairs.

After viewing this video, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING has changed my opinion about the consequences of this VERY BAD DECISION..... except that I am now more than certain that Ms. Suleman is "funtionally" mentally ill.

Ms. Suleman stated that she does not have a CLEAR plan of how she will take care of, and provide for this VERY large single family, EXCEPT THAT MS. SULEMAN HAS A LOT OF "HOPE" AND HAS DELUDED HERSELF INTO THINKING THAT SHE WILL HANDLE THIS SITUATION.

                  • she is "HOPING" to go back to school in a few months to finish her Master's degree. Dream on Ms. Suleman, you won't have the time or energy. Most families with 2 parents would find it hard pressed to spend time "chasing" their dreams.... what a rude awakening this woman will face..... but those precious little babies, through no fault of their own, will end up paying for her DELUSION.
                  • she doesn't know how she's going to provide for them financially, and is looking for financial AND emotional help from her family, church, and all the money she will earn - AFTER she completed her Master's degree..... obviously, Ms. Suleman doesn't "understand" that these babies will not be able to wait for the realization that her "dreams" and "hopes" will NEVER be realized.
                  • AND THIS IS THE MOST INSANE THING OF ALL OF HER "DELUSIONAL HOPING". Ms. Suleman is "HOPING" that the biological father of ALL these children will be in their lives, and help her out? OMG, a lot of biological fathers refuse to be in the lives of one or three children. And she REALLY think that this guy will want to take on this overwhelming financial and emotional burden? That thinking ALONE should be reason enough for the Family Services dept in that state to take the children away from her.

Listen Ms. Suleman...... having DELUSIONAL HOPE WILL NOT HELP YOU WITH THESE BABIES THAT YOU'VE PUT INTO THIS UNFORTUNATE SITUATION....... this is very telling that you, Ms. Suleman gave NO thought to the consequences of your DELUSIONS - which clearly now 14 precious little innocent babies will now have to pay for - through no fault of their own...... but through the fault of a "functionally" mentally ill mother.

Ms. Suleman had help from fertility specialists who she stated clearly that they knew that she already had 6 children when this procedure took place, as they are the ones responsible for filling her up with all these babies.... why? "because she asked them to? These doctors (who clearly are unethical and insane) must suffer some consequences.

If this is how doctors justify their "decision" to comitt this "situation" conduct themselves, without consequences for this violation of ethics...... God help us all!

I can't believe how rude so many people are being. My father always said, 'what a woman does with her body is her business and no one else's' in refernce to abortions. He was born in 1914, at a time when there were thousands of families with multiple children. So when a woman chooses to have another child and ends up with 8 was she supposed to abort 6 or 7 of them? We speak so loudly for the right to choose abortion, we accept mormons, Catholics have their rights, we plea for money for the poor in third world countries, yet so many criticize a woman who refuses to abort numerous babies?? People it's none of your business. There is no evidence of abuse of her other children. I grew up in a large family, the elders helped care for the younger ones.

From a spiritual point of view these babies have chosen this experience as well, and their life will be their own business as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if in three years we hear she drowns all of her kids in the bathtub. What a whack job and I hope they shut down the fertility clinic she used. Her parents also need to have their heads examined. What kind of people encourage and support her behavior!

I could say okay if she had an adequate support system to raise these children without expecting taxpayers to pick up the tab-that is what makes this our business! No responsible person who is grounded in reality would do this-not to mention the doctor and the fertility clinic-suffering from group insanity. All children need a father and mother-single parenting is not the answer- do some reading about this!

I think it is Nadya Suleman who needs DEEP counseling, not the other way around. (Curry said that Suleman said she intends to return to college in the fall to complete a master’s degree in counseling...be realistic).

Considering that she has no concept of reality, she somehow thinks that she can do whatever she wants and mommy will take care of all 14 for her children while she is out selling her story and having cosmetic procedures done at taxpayer expense.

Anyone I have ever talked to from a large family says that the parents never had time to spend with them. The siblings raised each other. That's not fair to the kids. Bad parenting if you ask me. I know someone who had invitro, and they spent $10,000, and that was about 5 years ago. Who paid for it?

Vicki: You are absolutely correct. She mentioned that the sperm donor is a friend. And that she hopes he takes some interest in the family. No man in his right mind would want the expense and responsibility of 14 children. He is probably already North to Alaska or places beyond. She has not identified him and if he is lucky, if she doesn't. Just might be accountable in paying for some of the hospital bills, etc., being he is the lucky Daddy. Oh snap.

Regardless....of the pro and cons, opinions.... the babies exist, are here, would 3 or 4 families of 3 be helped...supported.... put them all together and you have an issue... now is a time for support and pulling together during such an unusual birth. Whatever hopes or dreams one chooses to embrace still have challenges. Get over it, Get on with it and remember its a free country where one may choose birth or not. Voice your opinions but respectfully and if you have compassion your support.

I think that this should be considered a form of human trafficking and child abuse. It is a form of human trafficking because she is using the children as a way to make money and cheat the system and it is a form of child abuse emotionally because these children will not feel the same affection and love as most children do face and it is a form of physical child abuse because these children will probably face some health issues as they get older.

IVF costs quite a lot of money. Some here have questioned how she could afford it and that is a very good question. Also since she already had children it is questionable as to why that clinic still performed the procedure especially since she is a single parent. It smells like a scam or a plan on gaining attention, money and what ever else the clinic and she could think of. This is plainly a case of abuse ( especially to the children, all of them including the newborns) with neglect thrown in for good measure. Ethically, the clinic should have refused and directed her to a therapist. Herself, if she is not mentally disturbed then she must be looking for money and in that case , child welfare should step in and take those children. It's women like her that will cause some other unfortunate ones the cost of this procedure and loss of an avenue to conceive a child. Shame on her, Shame on that clinic, and Shame on any company or media that throws money at her.

When it comes to children it's not always what the mom wants, but what is best for the children. In this case the mother can't give the care that is needed. This never should have happened. What was that doctor thinking? I hope he is dealt with properly. For the children's sake I hope they are taken care of well.

P.S. Get that mother some therapy for her questionable outlook on what is right and wrong. Especially since it has to do with human life.

Her worker's comp she state, she had severe back problems while collecting worker's comp she had 6 children her story does not make sense. She has some sort of mental issues. Why was she out selling her story first day out of the hospital shouldn't her main concern be looking for a suitable place to live for her children. Those children are nothing but a cash cow for her.

The concern for these kids on the today show and the human interest story is all good, but when these children are hungry,or looking for their father to lead them.I want to know what then, this mother i believe has figured out the best way to play the system! she knows in the long run american's will start handing her what she needs.my other question is are we going to need a nutering policy in place for women like this???? no that wont happen ,welfare will pay for these precious kids and tax payer's will carry the load. i personaly think that this women should adopt these children out to couples that can give them a life that all children deserve.

This woman is obviously carrying a huge emotional baggage car of issues. She claims her needs are the result of feeling ignored.....well tell me how one mother can spread enough love around to 14 kids - 10 of which are under two! It takes WAAAAY more than money to raise children....she is insane....or does she have a new strain of Munchausen Syndrome - only this time with 14 victims! Munchausen by Proxy x 14????

I just want to add that with any back injury that could keep her from working should also be keeping her from having a child, let alone 8! While I can't judge her for her decisions I do think if she was getting disability for the back injury she should be investigated. Clearly someone who already has 6 kids she would know how difficult pregnancy is on the back!

Furthermore in her defense, people are saying how will she be able to provide emotionally for all these children.. I don't hear those same comments for the Duggar family- 18 and counting. I realize they are a family of two parents but I am willing to bet that they too could be suffering somewhat.

People, people!!! who are we to judge how many children a person can have. Right now more then anything this mother needs encouraging words and prayers. If the man upstairs did not think she could handle it he would've not put it in her path...Have some compassion! These children deserve to have love and happiness in their lives, even if there mother is off that's their mother and they'll love her unconditionally reguardless of how many siblings she has brought into the world. Don't get me wrong I am not saying it's easy but sometimes encouraging words help get me through!

I ask myself, what is the difference between raising eight more children and maintaining 20, 30 or 50 criminals waiting for execution. Or having a rescue team searching for someone that went on a hiking trip and got lost, or maybe having the fire department putting off the fire on the house that the rich and famous choose to build on a high risk location. It does not matter how you looked at it; it is still tax payers’ money. So if there anyone selfish or ignorant that is us, for allowing science to go as far as it has gone. You what is funny, I have no children and I pay school taxes. So what should I do, sue the government for all the money that is spend on the rich and the poor children. This is a lesson learned and a good reason to amend this in vitro fertilization issue, because this should be a last resource and not choice for anyone.

She seems like a good, caring, loving mother. What is the diffrence between her having a lot of kids and a man doing it? I know a man who has 8 kids, none of which he sees, pays for or supports in any way what so ever! Why doesn't the media hound someone like this, you know there are many more out there just like this man! Lets find these men and judge them the way everyone is juding Nadia!!!

One of the differences between Nadya and these men ..... The men probably weren't thinking of having babies ... they just wanted sex. Yes , alot of people realize the outcome of unprotected sex and this guy should have woke up to reality after the first one. Nadya had no means of supporting herself and had 6 children only to have children and then with a house in foreclosure still no means of support decided for the only purpose of self to add more babies ... just for babies. It usually takes 2 to have a baby so your friend could have used protection also. Nadya had complete control and power to do such a selfish act knowing all the facts of her situation prior to the 8 babies.

We need to cap the amount of benefits that people can get irregardless of how many kids they have. A friend of mine works at WIC and she told me that many of the clients there just laugh when the counselors talk to them about birth control.

I doubt that even after she is done school that she will be able to afford 14 kids. Do you know how much she would have to make in order to support them all? At least six figures and I don't know if counselors make that much a year. Besides now that the whole world knows about her and how unstable she is, do you really think that they would trust that she is a good counselor? I wouldn't want someone mentally unstable as my counselor.

IF she ever finishes school (sounds more like one of those lifers), then she is going to go out and get a job (as a COUNSELOR!?!?!), and ditch 14 kids on someone else so that she can now feel 'fulfilled' in yet another role! This lady will never be content, just searching... Poor kids!

Exactly when does she think she's going to have TIME to go back and finish school? These babies are going to need around the clock care for at least the next few years. Most likely some will have special needs and disabilities. And when that is addressed, who is going to be stupid enough to agree to provide childcare for all 14 kids if she returns to school? It would cost between $800 and $1400 a week at any normal childcare facility. I doubt that her welfare check will be enough to cover that and still leave money for her to pay for the diapers, food, formula and other needs of these little ones.

I believe this woman is living in a fantasy world. She apparently has no clue what it's going to take to care for those babies once they come home.

This state is broke, and we the taxpayers have to suffer the burden of it with the Idiot Politicos that have done nothing but screw us. This woman is obviously unstable and the State Needs to Look into Her-I for one, do not intend on paying for her and her litter that she had, so she could use it as a money tree.

Sierragirl, I agree that this woman was wrong and wholly self-centered in her decision to have a "huge" family. She and her 14 children will have a very long and difficult struggle ahead, and it seems likely that public, taxpayer-subsidized care will be required. Nonetheless, it is a very serious and dangerous thing to consider criminalizing childbirth, which is a policy of the People's Republic of China, not of the United States.

The public response is interesting. For a society that prides itself on individual freedom and liberty, there seems to be an overwhelming consensus that this woman has crossed the line. Perhaps it is because we agree that freedom and responsibility must be balanced, and that this is a case where responsibility should have taken precedence over freedom.

Moreover, it is a case where there should have been a medical and psychological intervention in this woman's decision-making process. Like an adult's right to consume alcohol and to become habitually intoxicated, it is yet another instance where the exercise of freedom results in harm to innocent parties and to the individual. But there is something fundamental in the right of the individual to decide whether or not to conceive and give birth to another, a right recognized by the Supreme Court in Roe v, Wade. Hence. I believe that this is a matter better addressed as question of medical and social ethics than of law. This is an instance where there has been a gross failure by the medical, psychological. and family planning professions as they gave way to unbridled, narcissistic individual freedom.

I think much of it has less to do with the ammount of children she has than it does with who is footing the bill for all of these kids. If she was employed, had a the means to take care of the children on her own and was not such an obviousl mental case, I don't think this would be much of an issue. However, if the possibility exists that she will be feeding off of the system and looking for a hand out, that is where she crosses the line. Do with your life as you see fit so long as you are not soaking up public money to do it or looking for a handout to fund your selfish goals.

Speaking of working the system, how could a woman with a back problem that was so severe that she had to go on disability, intentionally plan that many multiple births? Carrying one child is very hard on a normal back, let alone the potential of 6 at a minimum. She undoubtedly is working the system on her "bad back" issues.

The father may or may not have been aware of what they intended to use his sperm to father so many children and they may have been using the same donation numerous times.

If anyone purchases the book, movies, or anything that she will receive royalties on are only supporting this kind of abuse to children. My suggestion - boycott any purchase about this woman's self imposed multi preganancies. Write your congressman specifically about her and her clinic. Do Not Support them!!!

Exactly. How much attention does she need? Also, let the sperm donor help pay for the support of the children,,,same man fathered all the children,,,that is a close connection,,,same as unmarried couple having a child. Go after the father you people in Ca who do not wish to pay for the upbringing of these 14 children.

Based on the interview, the woman is clearly mentally ill. This raises the question: What the hell kind of doctor would give a single, unbalanced woman with six young childeren fertility drugs? I pity the kids who will have to grow up without a father. Not to mention the fact that when she goes on welfare and gives her kids health care, my tax money is going to pay for it. The fact that she is going to attempt to profit off of this is completely unethical and utterly despicable!

She needs help all right, and I'm not just talking about diaper changing.

IVF procedures cost 12,000- $15,000 and more. Just fertility drugs can be thousands per month. I still cannot believe she had invitro, and if she did maybe it was not in this country. That would explain the 8 embryos.

Here is an easy way to put a stop to her publicity and exploiting the babies for money... just don't buy any books, watch movies, or read paid stories about her. She can't make money if no one pays. I don't see anything about this woman that I would want to know more about... by having 14 kids to fulfill her childhood dysfunction, without a partner, and being unemployed tells me more than I care to know. So... I don't know what the media is thinking when they give her interviews and offer her book and movie deals. What a crazy world we are living in...

I say let her have all the book deals and TV deals she can handle. The more money she can "earn" the less welfare has to pay (or tax payers). If she does books and TV shows then I have a say in if I support her (I don't have to buy her book or watch her show). This makes it my choice where welfare I have to pay for through my taxes. Of course I think any TV reality show should show the real reality and not give her any extra help. Let the public see what it really is like to feed, change and give a bath to 8 tiny ones let alone keep up with 6 other active kids under 7. Once people see what a mess the house will be, how the kids are neglected etc. then they can use the series in high schools to deter teens. Lets turn a negative into a positive.

I too think that it is funny how she went from a single mother, no mention ever of a previous husband/ potential father to now she is divorced. Of course, it sounds better if she was at least previously married and she can have a sob story to go along with it. I also think it is hilarious that NBC stressed that they did not pay her for her interview. They want to make sure they don't lose their viewers in protest!

He is the responsible party and should bear the burden of ridicule and forced to pay full support.

ALL her children were conceived with IVF according to the interview. The same doctor performed ALL the procedures and all the children have the same sperm donor, according to this woman.

Seems to me that there is something really wrong with any doctor that will perform IVF on the same woman five times. 2 single births, 2 sets of twins and then octuplets... there is something seriously wrong with this picture.

Obviously the woman is seriously mentally ill. She proves that she has no concept of what the repercussions will be of trying to raise 8 newborns and 6 other children under the age of 8. Even if her mother, father and any friends help around the clock, it will be nearly impossible to give these children any quality time.

Yeah ... right. If all she really cared about was her children, she wouldn't have any contact with the media. I feel so bad for those poor babies; their mother is going to exploit them for everything she can.

The media won't leave her alone. People are clamoring for details. I said it before, the problem here is we still don't know all the details around this story. Everyone makes all kinds of assumptions but we just don't know for sure yet.

Yes her behavior is troubling, but she has no choice now but to tell the whole story. Will she make money off it? Probably. But isn't that better than supporting her children on welfare or with corporate sponsors?

NOT that I'm making excuses for her! The consensus here seems to be that this woman and her doctor made a grievous error and I am in agreement with that!

Great line of thinking. Maybe she can sell some the kids to a India to make carpet or be hookers. That a great way to teach her a lesson. Having no education or prospects so some of them grow up to be part of the "system" or worse criminals, that will teach her a lesson. Not getting any medical care so they get sick or die or maimed. That will teach her a lesson........get the point yet.

This woman needs to get her butt out there and take as many jobs as she can to pay for what her children need. It is not the responsibility of the tax payers to suffer the consequences of this woman's need to feel 'attachments' that she missed during her own childhood. Go after the doctors who made this possible, go after her parents who have enabled her to continue this sick obsession, give her your own paycheck if you wish, but do not try to guilt the rest of us into sacrificing for this woman. She made her choice; now she needs to provide for these children herself.

This whole situation is about the "smug and self-satisfied" mother, as it is with many other immature females that have babies. They couldn't care less about the implications of motherhood; they just want the 'prestige' and 'instant respect' they perceive as coming with it. This woman is just a spoiled brat and the only real dysfunction in her family when a child was that she was never told "No".

I also agree to BOYCOTT anything connected with this travesty. I'm sick of these kind of self centered people, and the unwarranted attention they receive at the expense of others. Yuck.

WORK WORK WORK WORK and pay for all your f ****** babies yourself. I am so sickend of this. I am a single mother of two where's my story???? Have I no creditability for my children. Heck I'm even a only child and I grew up in a foster HOME!! I want to know what I have done wrong. Should'nt us mother or Fathers get rewarded for all the hard work we do for are low dose of children and not get rewarded and offers for having a S***Load of children and new infants and not have a stable job or Husband at that!

The taxpayers shouldn't have to support her poor decicion-making either. I suggest that Child Welfare keep a very close eye on those kids and the moment it appears she can't support them financially, or more important, emotionally, they be removed and placed elsewhere so they don't become victims of an unstable woman. Lets give her a chance to parent...when it doesn't work out, get the kids out of the situation.

Oh, right! Let's put the kids in the oh so loving hands of the government! We'll find them loving and caring foster homes, where they'll never hear a bad word, or feel left out, or be abused or neglected....or we'll put them up for adoption! There's an idea! We'll treat her like a criminal for having too many kids, take away her family and put the children up for adoption! Then when they get older, they can spend a fortune finding their missing pieces! And find out that the reason they were taken away is because a bunch of holier than thou, I know better than you and arrogant snobs thought that their mother couldn't POSSIBLY give them what they might need, because they just KNEW it wouldn't work out and took them away to avoid ANY possible problems that might be. And, while we're at it, we'll just sterilize her against her wishes, because she's OBVIOUSLY mentally ill and doesn't know right from wrong, so shouldn't be allowed to have any more kids....oh, wait, they did that at one time, and a whole generation of mentally disabled people lost a chance to have children. Remember? Or better yet, remember that guy in Europe who tried to build a pure race? Sterilized and killed those who didn't fit his image of what was right? What was his name? Hitler, wasn't it? There we go, boys! Let's round up the horses and join the Nazi posse! Lynching's too good for her!

While I agree the government should not have to pay to care for her children, it is not OUR right to tell her how many children she is ALLOWED to have. We are not now, nor have we ever been Nazi Germany nor Soviet Russia nor China. It is our ability to understand that we each have a right to live our lives our own way that makes us free to be greater than the rest of the world. For those of you saying this woman should be sterilized, her children taken from her, how many of you support abortion? How many of you support the deliberate destruction of the family that is called Welfare? How many of you would not HELP this woman become functional so that she CAN take care of the family she has? I have heard and read about her dysfunctional childhood. How many of you would help her get past it?

It's very easy to sit here and say, she should be sterilized, institutionalized, I won't buy her book, watch her show, blah blah blah....It is much harder to give and is more necessary that she be given the help she needs. Not with the children, but for her own sanity. And saying that one cannot provide for the mental and emotional well-being of 14 children is prejudice. Just because YOU can't doesn't mean that ANOTHER can't. Otherwise, elementary school teachers and kindergarten teachers couldn't provide for 20 and 30 children every year. First, not every child needs hands-on parenting. I didn't, my brother did. Saying that every child does negates the individuality of that child. They aren't cookies. They aren't copies. They are unique individuals with unique needs, and she could very well turn out to be a great parent. YOU don't know. YOU aren't in a position to know.

                                                                        • 2 votes

If by some miracle this mentally unstable woman (proven by her own words) can raise all of these children without government handouts, then more power to her. I doubt that will be the case. And as far as 'not every child needs hands-on parenting'....are you kidding me?? I'm not sure what kind of dysfunctional childhood you endured without hands-on parenting, but that may explain your position on this subject. Also, your ridiculous analogy of a teacher being able to 'handle' 20-30 students so a parent should be able to raise 14 is beyond comprehension. Does the teacher spend every day and night with those 20-30 students for at least 18 years? Does the teacher provide financially for those 20-30 children? You may want to rethink that one.

She can not emotionally support any of her children. The world has a over population problem. Telling me that you will have as many children that god allows. This is a true cop-out. The problem is the children need to be supported. Laws need to be put on the books. If you have 2 children or more, that is enough no vertility drugs of anything else. There are way to many children that need homes. As for Angelina Jolie she adopted most of her children so she did the right thing.

NBC claim they didn't pay her, but some contractor representing NBC did. Please don't believe the hype.

In addition, there is an ethical question here for the doctor who performed 7 expensive in-vitro fertilization. (By the way, the disability checks paid for them.) In vitro fertilization is a last ditch effort to get pregnant, not to be abused like cosmetic surgery. Ah, only in America - the land of the plentiful!

ANY company that chooses to sponsor this woman with FREEBIES for her and her litter will LOSE my buying dollars to buy their products. Don't tell me that Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Dodge etc won't be tripping all over themselves to offer her a free car / van, and the likes of Pampers, Huggies, Similac, Enfamil, Gerbers ... etc etc etc won't be following suit. This is pathetic and the so-called "doctors" that impregnated her should lose their license to practice medicine. How can this woman POSSIBLY be a responsible mother / parent to all of these infant children?? What a disgrace!

There are many single parent AND two parent families that struggle to make ends meet and NO ONE feels their pain or supply some of their needs. Huggies, pampers, GM, Ford can donate something to others. If they want to help this lady, FIND HER A JOB AND MAKE IT MANDATORY THAT SHE WORK TO PAY FOR HER CHILDREN. So many taxpayers, especially those that are single and have NO children, will be paying for this woman's follies for a long time.

But, every last one of them ought to be paid for by the parents, not governent assistance. There ought to be a limit of kids that someone can have if they are on public assistance. I shouldn't have to pay for someone else's kids or themselves. I have earned every penny I have gotten, paid for my college, and never expected the government to pay for it.

Isn't it kind of silly to complain about "paying for her children" while our own government has been robbing us blind for years? Remember paying $4.00 in gas? They run much higher than normal risks for cerebal palsy, blindness, mental retardation, autism and many other problems that are associated with multiple and premature births. I would not count on them all being on the road and driving in 16 years since at least half will most likely experience some of those issues.

On the other hand, I think having 14 kids is insane unless you have some solid plan to provide for them. I have personally known families with 12 and 14 kids and they all turned out fine. Everyone was college educated and had very productive lives. They did not show up 8 at a time though.

However, you are right about the risks of multiple births. My sister had twins and one weight just a little over 4 pounds after birth. His name is john, he is now 14 months old and he has cerebral palsy. He will drive for sure because his case isn't that bad but there are cases were cerebral palsy can basically render you in a wheelchair for life. But you are right, half of these kids will have certain issue due to premature birth.

Without those offers the taxpayer will have to pick up the tab. Our taxes are already too high because of all the, high living the politicians do on "our" money.

"Using 14 kids to avoid your own thoughts and feelings isn’t much different for you than using alcohol or heroin to bury your emotions. The big difference is for the fourteen kids who will grow up trying to make sense out of the absurd circumstances into which they were born—not as products of a loving relationship, but as products of you trying to use motherhood as a drug to distance yourself from your own internal suffering.

Now, your suffering has been multiplied. Your suffering has eight new names to add to the six that already existed. Your pain now has fourteen faces. And all this, rather than looking at your own face in the mirror, into your own eyes and your own heart to find out what was missing, what had been injured, what needed real understanding and real repair, not real reproducing."

Ann Curry, I hope you drilled her on the clinic's name. Nadya is such a coward, hiding out in the hospital, now in some hotel room. She'll have to take her kids home sometime and face some real questions.

This woman is mentally ill and while I am not at all crazy about the quality of care provided by children's services, social services or foster care, those kids need to be taken away for their own good. Another thing I find scary is a woman who is this incredibly dysfunctional apparently was working in a mental hospital:

She was employed by a mental hospital from 1997 through 2008.

Words fail me at this point.

What's even more sad, is the so-called doctor who performed the fertilization didn't see this or he did see it and didn't care. This is one of the worse cases of medical ethics I've seen. No news channel should glorify this type of stuff, but have the decency to speak out against it.

They should be charged with neglect and take responsibility for footing some of the bills. Obviously, they provided no counselling and if they did, they should have alerted the Child Welfare System.
