BAGHDAD — Iraq is inviting contractors to bid for drilling rights to 40 oil wells in two major southern oil fields.
South Oil Co. has issued two tenders to drill 30 wells in the Majnoon oil field and 10 others in the Nahr bin Umar field. Both locations are in Basra, Iraq's second largest city and the epicenter of its vast oil reserves.
Bids must be submitted by March 1.
Majnoon holds 12.6 billion barrels in reserves and has a potential to produce 600,000 barrels a day. Nahr bin Umar has about 6.6 billion barrels of reserves and a potential production of 440,000 bpd. Together, they are currently only producing about 100,000 bpd.
Iraq sits on the world's third largest reserves with 115 billion barrels and it produces nearly 2.4 million bpd.
