CAIRO — A storeroom housing about two dozen ancient Egyptian mummies has been unearthed inside a 2,600-year-old tomb during the latest round of excavations at the vast necropolis of Saqqara south of Cairo, archaeologists said Monday.

The tomb was located at the bottom of a 36-foot deep shaft, said Egypt's top archaeologist, Zahi Hawass. Twenty-two mummies were found in niches along the tomb's walls, he said.

Eight sarcophagi were also found in the tomb. Archaeologists so far have opened only one of the sarcophagi — and found a mummy inside of it, said Hawass' assistant Abdel Hakim Karar. Mummies are believed to be inside the other seven, he said.

The "storeroom for mummies" dates back to 640 B.C. during the 26th Dynasty, which was Egypt's last independent kingdom before it was overthrown by a succession of foreign conquerors beginning with the Persians, Hawass said. But the tomb was discovered at an even older site in Saqqara that dates back to the 4,300-year-old 6th Dynasty, he said.

Most of the mummies are poorly preserved, and archeologists have yet to determine their identities or why so many were put in one room.

The name Badi N Huri was engraved into the opened sarcophagus, but the wooden coffin did not bear a title for the mummy.

"This one might have been an important figure, but I can't tell because there was no title," Karar said.

Karar also said it was unusual for mummies of this late period to be stored in rocky niches.

"Niches were known in the very early dynasties, so to find one for the 26th Dynasty is something rare," he said.

Excavations have been ongoing at Saqqara for 150 years, uncovering a necropolis of pyramids and tombs dating mostly from the Old Kingdom but also tombs from as recent as the Roman era.

In the past, excavations have focused on just one side of the site's two most prominent pyramids — the famous Step Pyramid of King Djoser and that of Unas, the last king of the 5th Dynasty. The area where the current tomb was found, to the southwest, has been largely untouched by archeologists.

In December, two tombs were found near the current discovery of mummies. The tombs were built for high officials — one responsible for the quarries used to build the nearby pyramids and the other for a woman in charge of procuring entertainers for the pharaohs.

In November, Hawass announced the discovery of a new pyramid at Saqqara, the 118th in Egypt, and the 12th to be found just in Saqqara.

According to Hawass, only 30 percent of Egypt's monuments have been uncovered, with the rest still under the sand.

Love Egyptology.

If you're in the Dallas area between now and May, come see the King Tut exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art. Good stuff.

I'm very courious to learn Why The Egyptian Areas Out side of Cairo Described in This Story Has All Been Covered By Sand...for The Better Part of 2,500 Years And It Took Another 2,000 Years for These Noteworthy Relic's To Be Discovered and Unearthed...???

Its Not My Intention To Appear Unempathetic About The Historical Significance of Egypt In The Course of Past, Present and Future World Events...!!!

My Apology For Appearing Unempathetic Extends Not Only To Recent and On Going Excavations In Both The Persian Countries But Any and All Excavations In China as Well...!!!

Because with Any Past, Present and Future Civilization Seemingly Being Erased From The Annals Of History: Much Like Pompei & Atlantis, etc...In My Mind--By GOD...It Necessarily Follows-That To Continue Engaging In Efforts To Unearth These Losted Civilizations---Is In Some Mystical Way Tempting GODs Wrath...Again...!!!

For If It Was GODs Desire To Hide These Past Societies--Present and Future Efforts At Unearthing Them Is To Be Inviting--GODs Wrath All Over Again...???

Because, Applying Mr. Lorenz's Chaos Theory: Events Appearing Random Initially, Over Time Can Be Seen To Have Developed Not Only A Pattern To Them-But A Purpose As Well...!!!

What I'm Discussing and Exploring Here Is Not Superstitution but An Extremely Complex Set of Facts...!!!

Which I Will Not Bore Further Any Of You By Listing Them...Here...!!!

You don't think white people doing anything is funny, it seems. Why did you have to bring Africa, and apparently race into it? Always wearing those dark colored glasses. Maybe if you keep digging, you'll find something in that African dirt that brings you some self-esteem. Maybe your great200 grandparents were king and queen, or maybe Adam and Eve.

By the way, Africa is just a break-away from North and South America, so we're all one big happy (ha) family, bro.

Frankly, I don't think digging up anyone's grave is funny, sir. They were put in the ground with the hopes of remaining undisturbed.

Went into the bathroom in my bedroom and saw her stark naked . I therefore am not afraid of looking at King Tut . I'm already cursed . I've seen it all .

Not everyone in Africa is Black if that's why you were offended. Would you have voiced your statement if these tombs were found in Rome if the same joke was made? Like. "I don't think making fun of European graves is funny".? Lighten up man. You'll live longer :)

This is a well known simplistic piece of Cultural Poisoning often attempted by the anti-kemits. You have been watching to mush Hollywood "Egypt". Science knows perfectly well (and so should you) that those people who occupy and control Egypt today no more resemble the indigenous people of Kemet then we in America resemble the indigenous people of Turtle Island (America).

Honk, thanks for reminding me that racism is alive and thriving in America. And that there are still megalomaniacs around who would sieze power and commit the most heinous crimes imaginable in the name of racial and cultural purity if they are not stopped. Yes, thank you for making it clear what the good people of the world most oppose. You reflect poorly on the highly pigmented people. Give someone a piece of paper saying they are accomplished, even if it is a gift to raise their selfesteem, and they sometimes just run with it. Your school should recall your degree or GED.

Interesting find that must be watched closly both for new information and Cultural Poisoning.

Yes, that has been a concern of mine to. As we know, the lesser pigmented (LP) have usurped the accomplishments of the highly pigmented (HP) and capitalized on their wisdom, in fact, using that very same advanced knowledge gained through the LP's ruthless aggression to keep the HPs in a state of oppression. Only HPs can be trusted to unearth the treasures, history, and relics of the HPs, lest cultural pollution occurs. And we must insure that pure HPs associate only with pure HPs so as to maintain genetic purity and HP pride. So according to honk the pseudo-cultural widget.

Hetep DonkeyR, I see you have developed some sort of psychosocial complex about melanin science. That is unfortunate. If you took time to learn about melanin in stead of making fun of it you could improve those "self-esteem" issues that you wish to project onto others.

Why did you have to bring Africa, and apparently race into it?

Let the record show that you were the first person to mention/mis-use "race" in this discussion. (5.2) In case you missed it, this-article is about an African country and African remains. It is not uncommon to find African Americans like myself talking about our mother land. Do you question the Irish that talk about Ireland?

Why do you think you had the right to make fun of honored African ancestors and then go on to denigrate the more then 2 billion Black people ("HP") world wide and think that you would not be responded to?

I am sure your comments would go over well in the White House or at the UN. You exhibit such a remarkable multi-ethnic American diplomatic skill set.

You can do better DonkeyR. I expect you to be civil, respectful and to take responsibility for your errors and insults. You should also keep the COH in mind.

Let me see. If a white person has input into Africa, it is cultural poisoning. So if a black person talks about the US, Europe, Asia, Antarctica, The Pacific Islands, the Moon, Australia, South America, or space, all where people of pigment were not first, they are poisoning those cultures? Honk the pseudo-cultural widget, there could be no more asinine assertion than those you have made on this thread. If you are what Africa is all about, its culture is poison. I am guessing that you are a Louis Farhakan lover. Talk about poison. An ignorant racist, that one. He should be in a sarcophagus.

Code of Honor. You have made the most racist assertions possible in that anyone having an opinion about Africa or highly melaninized people that is not also highly pigmented is poisoning that culture. You remind me of Ricardo Monteblan's character Khan in that Star Trek episode about eugenics.

Actually, after digesting it for a minute, it is hilarious. I am catching on to your dry humor and sarchasim. You had me going for a minute.

Hetep DonkeyRidder, it seems that you are a slow learner, with poor conversational discipline skills that leads you to make personal attacks as appose to an informational give and take where both parties get smarter.

You should make statements of fact that you can defend and support with evidence. If you challenge something I said as untrue you should support it with a fact. If you fail in these regards you should have sufficient integrity to admit it.

Here is an example from your own words.

If a white person has input into Africa, it is cultural poisoning.

I never said such a thing you did. Where is your proof regarding this statement a quote or a link will be sufficient. I know you are new and you may think this is the wild west like digg but here you must support your statements.

For the record many non-Africans have commented on and done scholarly work that is Culturally Healthy regarding Africa and are highly regarded my me and the African community as a whole. Dr. Martin Bernal or Dr. Richard Poe for example. You may not have seen Culturally Health European Americans talking about matters of ethnicity. If you would like I can provide you with a link to my Cultural Health Training center were you can watch such individuals in action.

Here is another example that should instruct you that you are better off asking questions as apposed to making statements about matters of which you are culturally Illiterate.

So if a black person talks about the US, Europe, Asia, Antarctica, The Pacific Islands, the Moon, Australia, South America, or space, all where people of pigment were not first, they are poisoning those cultures?

Mixing up truth and falsehood is a common symptom of Cultural Poisoning. If we take out the Moon, space and possibly Antarctica you entire statement is in error. Let us take the most obvious error, Black people where not the first people of Australia. What is the biological ethnicity of the Aboriginal people of the world's greatest island for 40,000 years before the invasions of non-Blacks on the Island? Read Burnum Brunum.

Your reckless statement reveals that you do not know the answer, but you have Google look it up. An error is not a crime, it does not become a mistake unless you fail to correct it. Hopefully, you will figure out the other errors on your own so that you do not embarrass yourself in public again.

            Honk the pseudo-cultural widget

You are new, so I am being nice to you, however, if you get caught with this type of personal attack or the others you will not be happy with the result.

P.S. if you are going to be an opponent of something and/or someone at least do your homework and be a competent opponent, less you inadvertently bring discredit on yourself and those who subscribe to your ideology.

Reader Note: you will note that DR did not quote or otherwise refer to one scholar of any ethnic group in support of his assertions in any comment. The only name he could think of seems to be "Louis Farhakan".

Often much can be learned from what is not said.

Hetep and Respect DrDonTornado, interesting phrase and question.

"When the archeologists come, the Gods disappear."

With respect to most western trained archaeologists, including those specializing in Kemet (ancient Egypt), that I have run into they are generally Culturally Illiterate regarding African Spirituality. This lack of knowledge regarding African Cosmologics and the resulting worldview causes them to make all manor of errors.

For instance you will hear many western trained archaeologists make unsupported claims like Classical African Civilization was not monotheistic only polytheistic. This type of Cultural Poisoning is propogated by hollywood movies like the Mummy and the Ten Commandments leading to widespread misunderstanding of African Spiritual systems and their denominations.

These types of spritual mutilation errors ("Gods disappear") are not typically made by Kemetologists (Western and/or continent trained archaeologists) Like Dr. Ben, Dr. J, Dr. Amen, Dr. Diop, Dr. Vansertima, Dr. Vega, etc. Who carry forward the 12,000 year old recorded history of African Spiritual systems.

Going to a Western archaeologist with limited training is like going to a shoe store to by flowers. They are not in a position to make judgements about African spirituality as they have no training in such matters. It is like going to most Western trained Allopathic MD's and asking for "health" care. That is not what they do. They have been trained by MediPlex to do sick care. They typically have no training in nutrition or herbs they do drugs and surgery.

In closing, it is not that the PHD's and MD's of my example necessarily make the God's or "health" care disappear with malice and forethought, it is simply that most do not know about such things.

Lots of good that African spirituality and "health" care did the past and present Africans. The pld ones are buried in that cat litter box of sand, having died young, and leaving a legacy of devolving societies and accomplishments. Current day Africans have to dig up the past to find something of cultural value, something to hold up as an accomplishment, that maybe, just maybe, they can claim as a part of themselves. What happened? What caused the stagnation and then decay of African societies?

H DonkeyRidder, more disrespect and insults for Black people but no rebutal to the facts as presented. I am sure the readers are taking notes.

Lots of good that African spirituality and "health" care did the past and present Africans

Sooner or later you or the readers will get tired of your errors. African spirituality did and does do our ancestors and us much good to this very day. If you are Jewish, Christian or Muslim you still say an African name at the end of your prayers, "Amen".

You should improve your Cultural Literacy regarding Religion. Too often I find that people know more about their job then their spirituality, you have it backwards.

The first hospital and teaching university's are found in Kemet. Hippocrates studied in Kemet (Ancient Egypt) Medical doctors still to this day take an oath to an African and a Greek doctor. Do you know who they are? You still find MD's and RN's wearing the African symbol of Medicine to this very day. Do you know the name of the symbol? you have seen it many times and know it on sight.

Current day Africans have to dig up the past to find something of cultural value, something to hold up as an accomplishment, that maybe, just maybe, they can claim as a part of themselves.

When we talk about Classical African Civilization there is no maybe about it see Dr. Diop. The evidence has been presented to the UN Body of world scholars and the history of Kemet (ancient Egypt has been rewritten accordingly). If you have evidence to refute Dr. Diop one of the worlds greatest Kemetologist precent it.

P.S. Speaking of finding something of "Cultural Value", you may have missed the news, the leader of the free world is a Black man. You may have heard of him President Obama.

What happened? What caused the stagnation and then decay of African societies?

The good news is that you are asking questions. unfortunately you are not looking for answers. The same question could be asked of Classical European Civilization. However, it is not likely you would know the answer to either question. Read about World War Zero and the 100 million. Read Dr. Chancellor Williams.

Sooner or later you will surprise us and do your homework before you speak.

Hetep and Respect DrDonTornado, I'm sorry I did not understand your response.

Not really. I'm just amazed at the Honky's rant.........

My name is Rudh Aunk my friends and readers call me Aunk. My name is obviously spelled differently from the standard Kemetic transliteration of ANKH. There is no one on the vine with such a name "Honkey". This is confirmed by the vine search which I just conducted.

Nice to meet you. I looked at your account and you seem to be in the medical field are you an MD?

"rant"? was there anything you found in my response not to be factual? Sorry if I was a bit long I had no Idea from your question how much detail you were requesting.

              Interesting.

Ancient Egyptians could almost be thought of as modern anthropolgy's best friends in that they took such careful care to preserve their people and culture so well.

I am always quick to look into new discoveries from this great culture.

Also, i find it disturbing that people would assume that great african cultures stopped after the greeks conquered egypt.

Many great african civilizations, like those in Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, or Mali, arose and lasted well into the mid 1800's. To show such irreverence is akin to claiming that aztec and incan civilizations in the americas simply disappeared because they were unworthy in some way.

One should seek to learn about a regions historical and cultural advances, civilizations, and people before making snap judgements about them.
