— Sports Illustrated is as secretive as it is successful with its blockbuster swimsuit issue, so Bar Refaeli found out she's cover girl of the magazine's 46th annual ode to the barely-there bikini just hours before the magazine hit the newsstands today.

Speaking with Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira and Al Roker on the TODAY plaza Tuesday, the stunning 23-year-old Israeli said her handlers treated their client's highest modeling milestone like a surprise party.

"My agency said I had an audition at the office," Refaeli told the TODAY trio, who actually knew about her being the new S.I. cover girl before she did. "And then they opened the door slowly, slowly, and they had the image of the cover like really big and there were cameras all over.

"It was like five minutes where I couldn't speak."

Refaeli is no stranger to Americans — she's been one of the most in-demand models since age 15, and she frequently graces the pages of celebrity magazines by virtue of her three-year relationship with actor Leonardo DiCaprio. But for a model, gracing the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue is truly hitting the career jackpot.

The swimsuit issue is typically seen by 66 million readers — including four in 10 adult men in the U.S., according to Sports Illustrated research — making it the biggest annual event in magazine publishing. Moreover, becoming the S.I. cover girl launched the careers of Tyra Banks, Rebecca Romijn, Cheryl Tiegs, Cindy Crawford and Heidi Klum into the stratosphere.

Refaeli was well aware of the famous footsteps she hoped to follow in when posing for photographer Raphael Mazzucco on Canouan Island in the Grenadines. The magazine shot 19 models for the swimsuit issue, but none knew at the time who might make the cover.

"It's the cover that matters most," S.I. group editor Terry McDonell told The Associated Press, but each model gets an equal shot.

"The cover has to reflect the athleticism and sexiness of the culture. This photo is modern, her hair and swimsuit look natural. You see her freckles. Her body is amazing and she looks intelligent," McDonell told the AP.

It's also purposeful, he noted, that the models have healthy, sometimes curvy, figures. "A skinny waif won't work here."

McDonell, along with swimsuit editor Diane Smith and S.I. creative director Steve Hoffman, sifted through 90,000 photos this year. In consumer testing, it's inevitable that the raciest one is the favorite, but that's not the one that lands on the front. "There are marketplace considerations," McDonell explained. "I want to be at the front of the store, not the back."

Refaeli, who was featured inside the 2007 and 2008 swimsuit editions, had a feeling she might make cover grade this year after she eyed the Missoni swimsuit that eventually put her on the front. "There's all kinds of cover tries, you try all kinds of outfits," she said. "That specific one, I don't know why, we all felt like, that's the one."

Revealing history
You can be sexy without revealing too much skin, said veteran supermodel Cheryl Tiegs, who first appeared on the swimsuit issue cover in 1970 — and then again in 1975 and 1983.

That shot happened at the end of a full day shooting in Hawaii, and she was cold. Someone gave her a long-sleeved top to warm her up, and when the photographer asked her to take it off, Tiegs refused — and she wouldn't take off her sunglasses either, she recalled. That photo, she said, really captured a moment.

"I remember walking by the newsstand and seeing I was on the cover and picking up a copy or two. That was the celebration then ... But I'm still signing covers for fans," Tiegs said.

S.I.'s swimsuit issue began in 1964, when February marked the low point of the sports seasons. The NFL ended in December, there were no national televised hockey games and the NBA had only a half-dozen teams. After putting safe-driving tips and dog shows on the cover, S.I. decided to put an attractive female on the cover and call it a "skin-diving story," recalls Smith.

It was popular from the start, but Smith thinks it was Tiegs' cover that made it a phenomenon. However, it was Kathy Ireland in a white strapless bikini in 1989 that remains the best-selling cover.

"I've done many, many, many different covers in the fashion world ... but never had as big a splash as Sports Illustrated," said Heidi Klum, the cover model in 1998. "I went to ['The Tonight Show with Jay] Leno,' the morning shows in New York and L.A. — it was a huge thing — suddenly I became a household name," she said.

But more than the fame, Klum said she appreciates from S.I. the professionalism shown to a relatively untested model wearing next to nothing.

"I had wanted it to be so good. I'd arch so hard ... but they'd say, 'Look sexy with your eyes. Don't overpose. Be yourself and have fun.' "

There's a balance between wholesome and sexy that the editors are always straddling, without ever being sleazy, Hoffman said.

The magazine spends an average of three days shooting each model, each with an average wake-up call of 4:30 a.m. because the light is best at dawn, and has about 10,000 bathing suits to choose from.

And even with the outfits so small, S.I. spends an average of $2,000 in overweight baggage fees per location.

"The logistics are horrifying ... but the swimsuit issue is probably the healthiest of all the Sports Illustrated franchises, and it's good to be with things that work, especially these days," McDonell told the AP.

Taking to the skies
As if Refaeli wasn't already sky-high from learning just hours before that she was the new S.I. cover girl, she is set to be whisked away in a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 dubbed the ''S.I. One" this afternoon for a cross-country promotional trip leaving from New York City. In an ultimate honor, the plane will feature Refaeli's photo spread across its hull.

"Air traffic control is going to be a mess this afternoon," Lauer quipped.

"I just heard the plane is going to still be active for a month later," Refaeli said. "I'm like, 'Oh, my God, it's one of the best things that's ever happened to me.' "

Even better for Refaeli was making the call back home to Hod HaSharon, Israel, where she was met with the voices of her ecstatic parents Tsipi and Rafael.

"My mom cried when she heard,"  Refaeli said. "My dad said he is the proudest father in the world. They're all very happy. They know that I've been wanting this forever."

Refaeli says she is well aware that no matter where her career takes her, she will once and forever be known as an S.I. swimsuit cover girl.

"Look at the history, it's a big part of history I feel," she told TODAY. "And it's a great, great step."

I usually don't watch the Today Show, but I tuned in today to see what, if anything, would be said about Obama's speech last night and the economy. What I got instead was a lot of pornographic pictures from the SI cover model. Isn't there supposed to be some penalties from the FCC for putting indecent pictures on the TV? I think there are more important issues facing the country now - one of which is the rampant spread of pornography. Ironically, one of the later segments on the show was about how young girls are under increasing pressure in our society to look and act a certain way - hello - Today Show and NBC apparently likes to talk out of both sides of their mouth. The fact that this skanky model's father is "so proud of her" is also a sad state of affairs - he should be shot and she should put some clothes on and do something that matters.

Why wear anything. There is hardly anything covered so why bother. Our society is really turning into a sick society when girls don't feel any remorse or shame for showing most of their bodies. Our you children in this world do not have a chance to know what life is all about because all this society is beginning to think about is sex sex sex. The United States is in moral decay and just seems to be slipping further and further down into sinfulness.

I'm half-way with you on that. The media loves to entice america with suggestive materials, and yet prostitution is illegal in most states. If it's legal to tease, it should be legal to please. If prostitution is going to remain illegal, then porn should also be illegal, as well as pictures of half-naked women. And although I have to admit I don't like religion being forced on society, I think if society would be a little more religious it might be a step in the right direction for america. I'm talking about business ethics, the criminal justice system, and laws in general. Oh well, I guess I'm just a little torn on that issue. But as far as the sexually suggestive magazines go, they are merely a fantasy for the average person. Those models are only accessible for other celebrities. At least, thank God, there are still those dating websites where the rest of us can hook up with overweight women, turn the lights out, and pretend they are Bar Rafaeli.

What a terrible message to send our little girls. Not only that it's about your body, but pulling your pants down for 66 million people to see is a career opportunity.

Are men really so stupid they believe she's pulling them down for them? No man I know is ever getting within 15 miles of that.

I seriously wonder why some of the most beautiful women out there are lacking in self respect? They have been given some of the greatest opportunities to stand before the world and do something brilliant, maybe even set a good moral example and they chose to take their clothes off for a couple of dollars. Materialism can only take a person so far. The word of the Lord stands forever. We will all have to stand before Him and answer for the purpose that we did or did not live up to. And to think some people choose to trade in the Kingdom of God and His opportunities for a paycheck. Whatever happened to modesty and people who could entertain without getting naked. One cannot even watch a movie anymore without seeing naked bodies everywhere. Its time to wake up, we are living in a modern Babylon. Does anyone else see this? This is not right! I pray for this woman to experience an awakening. She has so much potential. She needs to pull up her pants and use the platform for something better besides displaying her naked body. Because she is a woman and in a way she is making us all look like trash. This type of stuff should be saved for the bedroom for her husband's eyes only. The way it was created.

Umm... she's a model. This is what they do.

And, lets get something straight: she is NOT naked. She is wearing a bikini. Can you see her nipples or vagina? No you cannot.

And one more thing, as much as a lot of people will be angry at me for saying this, the fact is, she only has this "platform" because she is attractive and has a great body.

And, in case you aren't aware, people don't buy the SI Swimsuit Issue for "intellectual stimulation."

I agree with Sharon and B. - why wear anything at all?  They're barely covered as it is.  Covers like these only strengthen the pervs delights.  Our society caters to stuff like this instead of showing it's the beauty inside.  Ok, being beautiful outside is ok, but if they're going to be half-naked, why bother.  Sure it sounds prudish, until your daughter gets raped by some moron who thinks she should be undressed like the cover of magazines everywhere.  People have to think about what they're doing and be strong enough to stand up for what is appropriate.  Seriously.

I think you're taking this a bit far. Magazine covers DO NOT create rapists. Ignorance and lack of self control combined with a mental disorder, however, does.

Sure, she's the SI cover girl, but when is she going to book Mugatu's Derelicte campaign? THAT'S when you know you've hit the big time... Leo sure goes for the eye candy, doesn't he? I imagine the conversation might be a tad one-sided, judging by the "profound" remarks of Ms. Zoolander. She does have some kind of body, but are those boobs real? If not, it's a lot like jocks using roids, eh?

I did get a laugh out of the statement, "she looks intelligent", nor does she particularly look athletic. Standing in a bikini is not necessarily how I make an assessment on intellectual capabilities.

In this society we do judge based on an exterior package. It is unfortunate, but true.

However, I do commend her for going after what she wants and getting it. The whole point of equality for women is the ability to make the choice of how you want to live your life, not how someone else feels you should. She is a model and makes her living by how she looks.

If you are offended, and some will be, make certain that you impress on young women that they have a choice and that there are other ways to make a living. Some involve getting rich from your body, some from making a living using your mind.

                          B. Coutant and others have it right. Girls have abandoned ALL modesty for a few minutes in the limelight. We are becoming a very morally bankrupt society. Yes, she is very pretty. But think about it; other than her parents, who really cares about this "event"? There is no story here, folks. Yes ----- I very much enjoy looking at pretty women, but for some of those who have responded to the article, to ogle after them and to make such base comments shows how far down we have fallen as a society.

This is really not newsworthy, since SI has been doing this for years. The only reason it's even a topic of conversation these days is because we all have computers and it's a story that MSN decided to print and we can put our 2 cents worth in by blogging about it here. Let's move on to something that's worth discussing.

In the past years, S.I. swimsuit issues have displayed models with beautiful faces but bodies that are for the most part are way too thin. I rather see a fuller well toned bodies, especially fuller thighs.

The bikini in the cover of S.I. is also way too revealing. A one piece swim suit look would much better. S.I. doesn't get it. Women of the 40's 50's and 60's were better.

must say, and this from only seeing the cover online, that she seems

to have a few more curves than some of the skeletons that have been on past issues.

When men admire sticks like Angelina Jolie, whose shoulder bones show and other celebrities of the sort and fantasize with them, it makes us women believe that that is all men like. I don't see men drooling over America Ferrera or Queen Latifah, who do have curves. Men like women who look like models, tall and slender, not short and curvy or chubby, and the average model is a size 0. Until men stop admiring or showing fascination for these walking skeletons, society, magazines, celebrities, and the media will continue parading them in front of us instead of asking them to eat something more than a leaf of lettuce.

                                      I agree with you 100%.

I posted that info in response to Terri.

If you don't like it, don't look at it. Nobody is forcing you to. Seems simple enough to me. :)

And, while I'm on the subject, not ALL men like skinny women. Most of the guys I know, in fact, can't stand the way some of these models look. But what's wrong with Bar? She's not what I would call a "bonerack" by any means.

Average sized women are fine, and I know I'm not alone when I say this, (though I'm positive no men are dumb enough to agree with me) but, putting fat people on the cover will not sell magazines.

You can hate me for saying it, but that's the way the world works. And, by the way, men aren't the only people that buy magazines, so...

I fully agree, Prilj. Personally, and this is just my opinion, bone-thin women aren't in the least bit attractive. Curves are far sexier, but again, I prefer a woman with a good heart who can challenge my intellect.

Oh yeah, before I forget-you're right; putting fat people on magazine covers won't sell them, and that's a shame. True beauty can't be photographed.

                                                      Sigurd Rohwedder

I confess to being somewhat bewildered.

I am reminded of that old quote from the Bible "What went ye into the wilderness to see?" I mean it IS sports Illustrated and this has been going on for a LONG time. Has it turned into soft corn porn-- of course. So what? So have a lot of mainstream ads. It's not like far worse is not available form the various sites on the net.

I can't disguise the fact that she is a beautiful woman, but -- somehow-- I think she'd be more beautiful a bit more covered up. For me the great fun was always the seduction, far more than the sex. I delight in the little game of it, the long involved meticulous rigamarole, the inconsistencies, moods, changes and emotions of it. The flirtation and the fixation.

But as I have said before I love women, almost all women. I love the way they look, the way they laugh, the way they talk, they way they walk, how they smell, how they think, sing, sleep, pose, and look. Heck- I love to listen to them read the New York Phone Book. I love their strengths and courage, their vulnerability, and their angry moods. They're just great. Oh to be sure, I "Lust" women too, but I have always found them fascinating. In my yonger days had I had a Leporello to attend to my list I'm sure the chronicle of my loves would rival the Lascivious Don --- but unlike the Don I never took a liberty that was not freely given nor made a woman cry. Ive been happily married now for 36 years, but I still am as besotted with women as I was when I met my wife, though of course, I have never cheated or even thought ot cheating on her (that after all would make her cry.)

Therefore I look at someone like the model on the cover of SI and I begin to wonder how she'd look in a one piece, or better yet that perfect little black dress, and from there to a cocktail gown, and then to more formal wear, hat, earrings, until I see her not into bed but on my arm descending from a carriage in gorgeous formal wear as we enter the Met for a performance . I rather like that idea.

But not only that, I love all women, like the Don, the petite charmers and the grand dames, the older ones, the young ones, the country girls and the city cuties, chubby or thin, blonde brunette, or redhead, black, white, yellow, red, or brown, I find all of them simply fascinating. Soccer Moms and Cheerleaders, Strippers and Candy Stripers (is there anything more beautiful than a woman in uniform) -- That way they have of looking at you with their eyes almost shut when they think they've fooled you into thinking they're asleep, the playful banter testing the edges of how far they can push you, the Plain ones, and beauties, bimbos and highly intelligent ones, they all have a charm that I find irresistable. They make life worth while, they make striving and our dreary lives brighter, and they give us hope for tomorrow. What a horrible place the world would be without them. And we should treat them better. Yes I'm one of those people who believes that chivalry is not dead and still hold doors open, hold their chair, take their coats and hang it up, and all those wonderfully important little nothings that make life a joy.

So here's to women with all their grace and folly.

And now if you will excuse me, the stone statue beckons and I must dine tonight with the Commandatore.
