HOMER — Police say a 12-year-old Michigan boy was shot and killed when a gun being cleaned by his father went off.

Police say Ian Dunn died Tuesday afternoon at the home about 90 miles west of Detroit. Police are investigating, but they say the shooting appears to be accidental.

Police Chief Steven Fisher tells WWMT-TV that the father, 41-year-old Kevin Dunn, was cleaning the rusty gun. Fisher says it had been in storage for some time and the father had forgotten that there was a round in it.

The boy was struck in the head when the gun went off. He had been home sick from school.

Arad

Ugh. Protip: Check if it's loaded first. I'm not a gun nut and even I know to do that.

enigma

Father should be charged with criminally negligent homicide. People should respect guns if they choose to own them; if not, they should be thrown in jail for their careless and reckless behavior. How many times do we need to read this same story?

and now... a word or words from... ME

Ditto! but of course.... there will be those that say... accidental.... his own son.... boohoo.... and I feel for their loss so give him a choice.... plead to it or offer to have your forehead tatooed with "My negligence killed my son" in reverse so every time he looks in a mirror.....

The gun did not just "go off". It was fired by some idiot.
