MONTERREY — The world's heaviest man still can't walk, but he will soon be able to roll. Manuel Uribe said Thursday he is having a 1989 Chevrolet Astrovan outfitted to support his record-breaking weight, giving him mobility after more than six years of being confined to his bed.

Uribe earned the Guinness World Record as the world's heaviest man in 2006, when he tipped the scales at 1,230 pounds. He claims to have since shed more than 500 pounds after making a public call for help.

Uribe, known as Meme to his friends, even has a name for his new ride.

"My friends call it the Meme-Mobile, just like the Batmobile," he said.

The minivan is being converted into an open-air, flatbed pickup of sorts. Manuel says he will put a bed on the back of the van to drive around town, with his new wife at the wheel. When at home, he will hang out in a remodeled garage that will include a forklift to help raise his regular bed up to the level of his car bed, allowing him to switch locations from time to time.

Uribe said that, with the new car, he plans to start up an auto parts business. And Uribe's wife, Claudia Solis, said the two are even thinking about making a trip to the beach in May.

Uribe married Solis in October, and the wedding was one of the few times he has left his home in recent years.

You have to wonder about the enablers around him who fed him while he was gaining all this weight. If he can't get out of bed, it shouldn't be that hard to put him on a diet or to have said no to him while he was still gaining weight.

I say this with love, not ridicule.

I've actually wondered that myself.  I saw the show about him on TLC a while back.  I guess it goes to show you that some women would marry anyone regardless of what they looked like.  I can't imagine the wedding night...geeze..I can't even think about that.

I have sympathy for people who are overweight, but at what point does someone's sympathy run out for those who refuse to help themselves?  I think after he could not fit into a regular car, walk, get out of bed, would have been the time that he should have woken up to what he was doing to himself if not BEFORE.

I moonlight at W-Mart and see many, many overweight people riding in electric carts to get around.  Some women don't fit into our size 4x ladies tops & complain to me about no choices.  I have little to say to them because I see so many people who refuse to do something about their condition.  For the sake of this man's family and wife, I hope he continues to lose weight.  Sad that he had to get to the point he did before he decided to change his ways.

Devil's advocate: some of those people have joint and back problems from their weight problems that makes it painful for them to walk.

Another reason you see those people at 1 AM in the morning instead of normal daylight hours is because of the disdain and ridicule they get from average-weight people. It's kind of sad.

Some of these people are equivalent to the homeless...they just stop trying. They give up.

I always wonder what it is that allows some people to keep going in the face of adversity, and why some people just quit.

That being said, I still do wonder about the enablers. What's up with that?

It is hard to imagine what the enablers derive from it psychologically. If you take a second and imagine yourself in the situation, you really just can't maintain the thought. You know that you would be doing something about it.

You would hope at least there should be a breaking point. I feel awful when I see extreme cases, but have to wonder at what point do you stop caring?

I know there are some glandular issues, other reasons why some cannot lose a lot of weight. All obese people do not have that. Overweight is not the same. I can understand he probably can't do much of anything at this point. Maybe some kind of water exercise, so the weight is not so 'heavy' for him. Not being a smarta$$;)

If you are overfeeding a person who can't even get out of bed, you must prefer having them that way than able to walk around. Think of all the things you don't have to worry about when a spouse can't get out of bed: sex, sharing the TV remote, having them know you are watching porn on the internet.

Bringing enough food to someone to keep them in that state is the equivalent of a spouse buying booze for the alcoholic husband/wife. It doesn't make any sense to me. What I have seen more than a couple times on these TLC shows of extremely overweight people is that "Mom" is the enabler. Some of these people have never married, been out on their own and then cry because insurance companies don't want to foot the bills for the stomach stapling surgeries later. I watched one show recently where it was a woman who got to weighing like 800 pounds (forget the actual amount). She had a couple kids, and they all lived with the woman's Mom. Don't know if she'd ever been married or not, but the kids clearly loved her and didn't want her to die. She did have the surgery, but later died due to some complications. I felt so bad for those 2 kids, but it could have been prevented when she found herself unable to walk, bed-ridden, and living like a hermit. Sad when people allow themselves to get to that point when they have people who love them and need them to stay around.

I saw this guy on TLC also . One of those things , yes , you feel sorry for him . I doubt he enjoys his life very much . The woman that married him is a wacko . She just kept giving him whatever he wanted , the kitchen showed it all . Fast-food containers stacked to the ceiling . The guy is desperate need of a dietitian and someone monitoring his blood sugar . Even a guy his size can die from malnutrition .

I also saw the show on TLC. The wife did not enable him, it was his mother. From the time he was a young child. Once he became bedridden she continued to cook greasy, fried foods for him. She said she had to cook a lot of food for him because that is what he wanted. She should have stopped giving him what he wanted and given him what he needed. Glad to know that he has lost 500 lbs. He has a long way to go, but once he loses the weight he will need surgery to remove the excess skin that will still be there.

The sad thing is, obesity is becoming an epidemic in this country. Granted, most will not get as large as this man, but it is still a growing problem. If you look around at our young children, many of them are overweight before they even start school. The reasons for this are many, yet the solutions are simple.

1.) Video games, cell phones, television, and yes, computers = Lack of exercise. We are all guilty of this. If everyone put these things down at least 3 times a week and exercised for 30 minutes, it would do us a world of good, regardless of your weight, whether obese or perfect.

2.) Eating out is the norm instead of an occasional treat = Massive calories/Unhealthy food. There are websites out there that will tell you the calories in the food that we all order from the local drive-up window. You can go to calorieking.com and you will be stunned at the amount of calories. Just one meal at KFC exceeds the amount of calories we require in one whole day.

3.) Lack of physical education/health classes = Making unwise/unhalthy choices. If we don't educate our kids, who will? Many do not understand the basic idea of calorie intake/calorie burn. If you don't burn off what you take in, you gain weight. Simple, right? And, food choices. A package of cookies vs. a couple of oranges? Teach them to read labels if nothing else.

If just the above three were implemented, our country would be ahead of the game. I know there are more things I could write, but you get the idea.

Victoria , it really doesn't matter how many times it is explained to people , they hear what they want to hear . I'm 6'3" and weigh 160 lbs. , well , that's a good weight . However , I smoke about 2.5 packs / daily . Just like food labels say the amount of fat /serving , serving size etc.... , every pack of cigarettes says the equivalent ( gonna kill me ) .

The way you presented your post probably offends people . We know the rules .

                                    Victoria,

I think you have a really good post. What you say is very true. I work part-time in retail and on a university campus. I see many, many young people who are extremely overweight (not as bad as this man of course, but obese by any standard). Many of these kids do not care because ALL their friends are overweight as well. They think they can't go anywhere without a juice or drink bottle in their hands. They don't deny themselves anything because that is the way their friends also live. They don't care if they have to buy plus sized jeans when they're only 15. What is even more troubling is that they have no clue that it gets harder, not easier to lose the weight once they reach adulthood. I personally am trying to lose 20 pounds and it's very, very hard. I walk when I can, and I don't own a set of scales. I know when I need to lose weight by the way my clothes fit. The U.S. has some of the most overweight people in the world, but they continue to eat like it's no big deal and it's starting in kids younger and younger each year.

BTW, anyone who smokes 2.5 packs of cigs also has a problem. I see that as even worse than being mildly overweight.

You ever think some college kids may also gain some weight because they're so swamped with work they don't really have much time for anything else?

There are many things people can do to burn a few extra calories. If you can't exercise for 30 minutes at one time, you can break it up into 10 or 15 minute blocks of time. Park farther away and walk fast. Take the stairs, two at a time. How long does it actually take to drop down and do 20 crunches or push-ups? If at work, instead of sitting in the breakroom, jog in place or run the stairs. Those who have a long driveway, instead of stopping at the mailbox in the car, drive to the house and walk or run to the mailbox. When watching TV a couple hours a night, lay in the floor and do exercises while watching or park an exercise bike in front of it and pedal away. Spend time with your dog, run around the yard chasing them or take them for a walk. Turn some fast music on to dance, even if you don't know the 'correct' way, just move it. Jump, wiggle, do the bump, go in circles, anything that moves you.

You don't have to have a strict daily routine. Just do something and anything that moves you out of your regular daily grind.

Victoria , you're giving out advise ? you just posted that you were fat and basically are afraid to buy a scale . Mitsi , I agree with you . If kid's are constantly around friends that are fatter than they are , there is a lack of initiative . There is always someone fatter

I have friends who are overweight and I have friends who are skinny, and I didn't become fat because of them. I became fat because I ate a lot of McDonalds and Burger King and candy and didn't exercise as much as I should have. Since I was 13 I've lost nearly 80 lbs, but that's because I've started exercising more- I swim for 30-45 minutes or do 30 minutes on an eliptical machine at the gym or walk for 30 minutes four to five times a week- and I've changed my eating habits.

Lew, if you call being 5'3" and 113 pounds fat, then I guess I'm fat.

I'm 5'2", I currently weigh 250 lbs, my goal weight is 150 lbs.

                                            113 is a perfect weight for someone who's 5'3".

Personally I'd rather be plump and cuddly than thin and sickly. I find thin figures unattractive and boring to draw, they have no definition.

To Jane: I sincerely hope you reach your goal. I know it isn't easy and it is hard to stay motivated. I think people get discouraged when they go "on a diet" and if they mess up by eating a cookie, they think they have failed. They haven't. The thing to do is, just keep on going. Don't think "Oh, I shouldn't have ate that cookie." Instead, just admit to yourself "Oh, that cookie tasted great. I will definitely have to work out extra tonight." Don't think "I gained 2 pounds this week." Think about the weight you have already managed to lose, whether it is 10 pounds or 100 pounds. That is success. And if you've already done that much, you can do more.

I know I seem to be taking a light-hearted attitude about trying to lose weight, but that isn't my intention. I just think that people forget it is a long term thing and it can sometimes take months or even years to reach the goal. But, the important thing to remember, if you stay with it, and it stays off, it gets easier and stays off longer. And if you keep an upbeat attitude, it will show in the workouts and in how you deal with small setbacks.

I went on a low-carb diet, and I hated it because the nurtritionist made me feel like I couldn't do it. But the diet was also very limiting, because most of the stuff on the diet I couldn't eat and there wasn't anything I could eat that was "okay", so it got to the point where I was literally living on scrambled eggs, cold turkey sandwiches, chicken, steamed and raw veggies and protein waters and plain water. But then if I ate one slice of fruit I'd gain two or five pounds and then the nutritionist would "yell" at me. So I quit the diet and started taking diet pills in addition to exercise and eating right.

My hubby has lost over 115 pounds, but it has taken him awhile. But, when he loses it, he has been able to keep it off. He has made several changes in his diet and they are fairly simple. 1) No fried foods. None. 2) Walks on treadmill for one hour each evening. 3) Smaller portions on everything he eats. When adding food to his plate, he doesn't get any portions that are bigger than his fist. Oddly enough, that works. 4) No fast foods. 5) Lots of water.

I love junk food too much to give it up. Well actually I don't really love it, I just eat it because I want it. I've limited it to just the weekends and the rest of the week it's fruits, veggies, wheats and meats. I never really count the proportions, because I hardly eat at all now. There are some days where I'll eat like a horse, and there are others where I'll eat a couple of bites, or other times I'll just have a protein bar for lunch or dinner, which I know isn't healthy combined with pills but it seems to work for me.

I've done low-carb in the past and I did lose some weight. Trouble is, it isn't a "normal" way to eat for life. You can't simply cut out most or all carbs and be able to live that way for the rest of your life. Plus, if you are as busy as most people, what's easiest is not usually low in carbs. I'm not a huge meat eater myself, so it was hard for me to stick to it to begin with. But, if you are able to do it, your body doesn't crave the carbs as much as before because your body sort of goes through a withdrawal from them. It does work for a while, but I can't see it being a permanent type of eating pattern for most people.

With the weight problem of teens I see, I'm not saying it's the friends' fault that someone else is fat. I'm saying that the peer acceptance is quite different than it was when I was in school. The majority of the girls in my class were not overweight. I was not overweight in college either. What I'm seeing now is a trend though where whole groups of junior high aged kids are all overweight. It's that group mentality that makes them think this is the normal way to look, so there is not the same desire to lose it the way it was when I was growing up. I would have been mortified if I'd had to buy jeans in the plus section when I was 15 or 16. Now, I am personallly seeing those same aged kids not batting an eye when they try on size 20 or bigger sized jeans. They really do not seem to have a problem with it, and I find that kind of remarkable. It will be much harder to shed those pounds once they reach their 30's and 40's, but I doubt they care much about that now.
