Obama: Long recovery effort will succeed

WASHINGTON — Recovery from the economic recession, now in its 16th month, will take a long time, President Barack Obama cautioned Tuesday evening, but he reassured Americans that he was making progress “on all fronts.”

“This crisis didn’t happen overnight,” Obama said in his second prime-time news conference. And the recovery will take “many months,” he said, because “we’ve accumulated structural deficits that are going to take a long time” to rectify.

After a week of diversions like the scandal over bonuses paid to executives of American International Group’s rogue Financial Services division, the president convened the news conference in an attempt to refocus attention on his ambitious $3.6 trillion budget proposal, which he called “inseparable” from the recovery effort.

“It’s a strategy to create jobs, to help responsible homeowners, to restart lending and to grow our economy over the long term,” Obama said.

Watching over AIG
Despite Obama’s attempt to change the subject, much of the discussion was about AIG, which created a blistering controversy this month when it was widely reported that $165 million of the money the company had received from the federal bailout of the financial sector would be paid out in bonuses.

In recent weeks, the furor has threatened to undermine the president’s efforts to bail out the financial sector by scaring investors away from the new program and by making it more difficult to wring more bailout money out of Congress.

Obama said he was confident that there would be “strong support from the American people and the Congress” for authority he is seeking for a broad overhaul of financial regulations that would give the administration more power to regulate and even take complicated financial companies whose collapse could threaten the entire system. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is to outline the proposal Thursday when he testifies on Capitol Hill.

With the proposal in place, the sense at the White House was that the administration’s agenda was finally coming together, Chuck Todd, NBC News’ chief White House correspondent, reported Tuesday. The president believed now was a good time to return to the No. 1 goal of mobilizing the public behind his budget, officials said.

“I think the American people want to see and hear from their president right now, listen to the steps that he’s taking and the administration are taking to get the economy moving again,” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told MSNBC on Tuesday.

Obama warns ‘tough choices’ coming

In that light, Obama said it was time “to make some tough budgetary choices” because “we can’t ... sacrifice long-term growth.”

The focus should be on health care, energy, education, he said, to “build a foundation for long-term economic growth,” as opposed to what he called the illusory prosperity of the last few years, which he said was fueled by short-term maneuvering on Wall Street.

The most important of those targets is health care costs, the president insisted. And he said it would be the most difficult.

“The problem is not just in government-run programs. The problem is in the private sector, as well,” Obama said. “It’s experienced by families. It’s experienced by businesses.”

Obama said he would push proposals to fund new technologies in medical care, advance preventive care and monitor cost controls, signaling that the administration may seek to change the system under which the government reimburses health care providers under Medicaid and Medicare to emphasize “improved quality instead of the number of patients they treat.”

He acknowledged that such proposals would “cost money on the front end,” but he maintained that they offered “the prospect of reduced costs on the back end.”

Obama also disputed the contention that he was asking only Wall Street to sacrifice, saying the American people had already sacrificed enough.

“Folks are sacrificing left and right,” he said.

“You’ve got a lot of parents who are sacrificing on everything to make sure their kids can go go to college,” he contended, as are workers who are accepting unpaid furloughs “so their colleagues don’t get laid off.”

Obama’s remarks came a day after the administration unveiled
a plan to melt a vast credit freeze by helping banks shed bad loans. Under the plan, the government will finance the purchase by private investors of as much as $1 trillion of the $2 trillion in bad assets still held by the nation’s banks in hope of freeing banks to begin lending more freely and churn up economic activity.

The proposal led to a huge stock rally Monday, although stocks
slipped back somewhat Tuesday as Wall Street digested all the information.

Obama takes to the airwaves
The news conference was another in a series of high-profile public appearances in which Obama has sought to steer the national conversation from outrage over past mistakes to working toward the future.

In just the six weeks since his last prime-time news conference, Obama has signed the $787 billion stimulus into law, announced a troop increase in Afghanistan and a plan to bring troops home from Iraq, rolled out plans to stem foreclosures and take toxic assets of the books of banks, and unveiled his budget.

In addition, a long interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes” aired Sunday night, and an
opinion piece under Obama’s byline ran in 31 newspapers worldwide Tuesday, a setup to next week’s meeting of leaders of the Group of 20 largest world economies.

On Wednesday, the president Obama heads to Capitol Hill to lobby Senate Democrats. On Thursday, he will conduct an online chat to answer questions from everyday Americans.

Meanwhile, an announcement is expected by Friday on a revamped U.S. strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The frenzy of activity comes as i nterest in the president remains extraordinarily high and as his job approval rating stands at 63 percent, according to the latest Gallup Poll. A majority of Americans — 54 percent — even approve of his handling of the AIG scandal.

As a result, all of the major broadcast networks scrubbed their entertainment programming from 8 to 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday. That decision — coming during the crucial sweeps period, when the networks showcase their highest-rated programming to drive up ad rates — was expected to cost NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox about $15 million in ad revenue.

I'd really like to know where the money for this is going to come from? Once the ink dries on the "budget" you can pretty much expect the next prime time speech when he tells us it time to pay the piper followed by some serious tax hikes... and not just for those making more than 250k.

“It’s a strategy to create jobs"

Gee, I wonder where I heard that before? Oh yes, it was for the $787 Billion "stimulus" plan, and then the $410 Billion "pork barrel" plan, and the $700 Billion "bailout" plan, and now it's the $5.6 Trillion budget plan.

And his plans are going to "leave us stronger"???? With a debt millstone around the necks of us, our children and grandchildren??? Yeh, right.

3.75T plus $1T in toxic waste assets, 787B Stimulus Plan, $400B Health Care, --and his own Cabinet and heads of department say the Stimulus isn't enough. No doubt he failed Math in school as this won't save on the deficit unless he's planning to drowned us in taxes.

Bush's 2008 budget was 1.6 and all the Democrats thought he was spending us into the ground? Start adding folks Obama will have it up to 5T before the end of April just for his budget. Of course, his travel expense will cost over a trillion if he doesn't stay where he belongs and do some work. When AirForceOne takes off a second identical plane goes with it and a half dozen fighter planes.......it isn't cheap by any means.

Wonder what Obama will have Dodd change in the budget to pay more bonuses! He can try to act like saintly all he likes but his halo slipped with AIG and it's still slipping with all the payoffs showing up for himself from AIG, Fanny Mae, AFL-CIO, Teamsters, and more

For a change of pace, I'll say something positive about Obama: He is talking to us.

He may be lying through his teeth. His programs may be the worst possible plans for our country. But he is talking to us.

One of my criticisms of Bush was that he rarely spoke to justify the importance of the war. If something is important enough to cost American lives, it is important enough for the President to remind us why we're doing it.

If something is important enough to cost our children trillions, then it is important enough for the President to tell us why.

The money will be coming from everyone. It will be taxation upon taxation.

GeoSapper, I agree the President is talking to us and anyone who disagrees with him.

It is called campaigning. Bush was a fiscal idiot who could not put two sentences together, but I will give the check mark that he did not screen/nor turned away questions.

For 8 years I was amazed at the powers that Bush assimiliated under the Executive Branch of Government. President Obama is making Bush look like an amateur on the amount of power he is usurping.

The government wants to take over companies that have nothing to do with the recession, but could affect it? How about first proving one Government program that has ever worked. Second, regulate not usurp.

Fix Social Security, fix medicare, fix welfare, fix immigration and then move on.

Our President got over his shock and disappointment over AIG about as quickly as it took him to react to it--2 days.  He said it took him two days to respond because he wanted to know what he was talking about?    Perhaps what he meant was it takes that long for everyone to get their stories aligned.

I'm tired of him blaming what he inherited from Republicans--you cannot lead by blaming what is behind you.  Clinton didn't complain this much when he turned the budget around.  Obama's predecessor didn't pick Geitner, or put the blindfold on him and all of his adminstration that all seemingly were not in the know on the AIG debocle.   Republicans didn't put the exclusion for these bonuses in the stimulus bill (and no I am not a partisan Republican--I actually voted for Obama).  He said  on 60 minutes that you cannot govern out of anger, but I say you can govern out of accountability and that is was is sorely lacking.  Geitner is his choie to lead us out of this crisis?  How do I put faith in someone in fixing a problem when he cannot identify the root causes...he took no accountability for the AIG debocle--as with everyone else involved its always "they" or "my legal advisors" or my predecessor, or in Geitners case calling is an example of systemic meltdown.  And he want Congress to grant him more broad sweeping powers when his first action lands him the hotseat today.  Do you hand the keys over to your vette to someone who just crashed your station wagon on his first test drive--I didn't think so.  Why give Geitner more broad sweeping powers when he doesn't have the support staff to implement or enforce it...apparently he must not be able to find anyone that coulld survive the IRS back tax scrutiny that he encountered.

Perhaps none of these birds wanted this AIG situation in court because then folks have to testify and actually tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth and then sides start playing against each other and the whole house of cards could come tumbling down.  Why hasn't anyone checked the dates of these retention contracts to see who really was running the ship at AIG?Bernanke said his legal advisors told him not to pursue suing AIG because of a Conneticutt law when the Connecticutt AG stated he would give the Fed's the green light if they decided to pursue legal action against AIG--it's all a big farse when you ask the tough questions and no one seems to want to ask the obvious.

And our President wants us to have confidence when his confidence lies with folks like Geitner and Bernanke with such a "stellar" start--not me.   I gave our President his chance when I gave him my vote....he's got a helluva lot of ground to make up before he'll get my vote again.   Things sucked under Bush for sure...I never thought it could be worse...little did I know these folks seemingly have taken it as a personal challenge to prove me wrong.

demitrix, Agree with you... it was painful to write that.

During the campaign, the pundits said that Obama had learned from Clinton's mistake of over-reaching early in his first term. That over-reaching gave us Gingrich, a Rep Congress and balanced budgets.

The pundits said that Obama was wiser and that he would not reach too far to the left too early. Boy did they get that wrong.

I find it interesting they admit that people who lied on their mortgage applications might benefit from the program the administration is demanding be implememted.

    Solution;

congress, who's job it is to pass laws, should enact a law that anyone taking advantage of federal mortgage relief programs, found to have signed a fradulent loan application (lied about income, assets or occupancy) be punishable with a 50K fine AND 1yr in jail.

The application, part of the loan file required by law, should be reviewed by the borrower and affirmed prior to taking part in the programs.

The sad part is that a simple solution will never be considered. Outside comments are not on the agenda. Too busy multitasking.

Obama is unconstitutional! Every time he opens his big purple lips we loose freedoms and gain debt. We loose our best allies (due to inept diplomacy) and gain--well gain worse enemies where we had enemies before. They used to fear us now they (Iran etc.) just despise us as weak. He takes over more and more of the private sector and leaves less and less to us.

Mr. (and I'll never say President) Obama, you are unconstitutional! I can't believe you taught constitutional law--well let's see, you really didn' have to teach those classes now did you, just like you didn't have to have the grades to get into Harvard or just like you didn't ever try a case at the law firm where you "worked." Who has set you up to be the Manchurian Candidate? The answer is on YouTube and it is a fearful answer indeed.

We are seeing that you meant it when in your book you said, "If the wind blows in an unfavorable direction I will stand with the Muslims." Your advisor on the Middle East favors invading Israel and wiping it out. You have selected an Iranian advisor who is in bed with that regime and feeding you garbage--whatever the regime tells him.

Obama, you are unconstitutional. We need to take you to the supreme court before you can pack it any more than you already have!

For the national Tea Party remember that tea bags won't ever get to the person you are sending them too because of the restrictions on contents from 9/11. I would recommend taking a picture of Earl Gray or English Breakfast Tea (since the Moslems are already taking over England) of a teapot and print it (more than you think you might need--these are growing) to distribute to everyone to send in with their own message. Take plenty of envelopes and have the addresses right there for Congress, Senators and the White House. This will overload the mail especially Pelosi's and Obama's for days and maybe weeks. Get all your friends out. Let Freedom Ring so ring the bell. Here a lot of the folks at the first tea party took on fun names which they now have as webites. One very pretty little gal in the "Conservative Babes" has the name of "Liberty Belle." I'm just "Old Glory!" Make it fun, but make it serious.

confused..I watched the press appearance....another appearance for the celeb. I picked up on some strange things, first of all he blamed "others" before him for "the mess he inherited" seven times during that speech.

A reporter stood up and stated "that senate democrats were writing up a fiscal budget for obama to sign." wait, if I have been paying attention to all the enlightened liberals..Bush writes the budget, Congress has nothing to do with it.. Oh wait, when it's Obama, congress and the Senate writes it..when bush was in Pelosi, obama, Reid, and Dodd didn't write it, it was Bush...huh?

Why go to Univison for a question..who really cares.. sned troops to the border and don't pat yourself on the back that you are protecting us.

Did he even answer one question..well except one..notice how when the Politico asked his question, Obama stopped bumbling, spoke clearly and loudly his answer..is the politico Conservative? Seems like his answer to this question was well rehearsed..and no answer at all really.

why talk about stem cells when the answer semed weird...I am gonna do this to find cures for parkinsons etc etc.."

Mr Obama, research has been done on fetal stem cell..alot of research despite what the media reports. Adult stem cells have been the only ones that do anything...so why not research what seems to be working more..

Answer, you are politicizing the issue, and you really don't care. Anyone notice how when the one reporter called him out on his @!$%#, he shirked back, got a big uncomfortable smile?

BTW..why did the liberal abc news bring up race into this..gawd..stop being idiots about race, he is in the white house for gods sake.

Obama wants to cut the deficit? Well, he can start by cutting off the life long pay and benefits for politicians, then he can stop the welfare handouts to illegal aliens and limit handouts for habitual deadbeats to 6 months. That should cut the deficit in half...

Then we can look into bringing jobs back from Mexico and China and put Americans back to work, that would raise enough taxes to eliminate the deficit completely!!!

Everyone needs to read the article in Rolling Stone Magazine about the fall (or was it fail) of our economy.

        Dawn,

We can get companies to stop sending jobs overseas, by following these simple steps:

        1) Place huge taxes on ALL imports

        2) Offer large tax incentives for any company (both foreign and domestically owned) that build products in America, using American employees.

        3) Renegotiate or limit labor contracts with unions. Get rid of the $30/hr floor sweepers and 95% pay during slow downs. Make labor more affordable in the US and jobs will stay.

        4) Get selfish Americans to buy ONLY American made products, instead of supporting countries like China and Mexico. Save your own job or the job of your neighbor, buy American made!!

As to point one there are grave political consequences for taxing imports excessively. Those countries we trade with will do the same. We aren't an island so we would have to trade?

I agree with the rest of your points but corporations leave the US for reasons other than tax breaks. Emission standards, land value, cheaper labor? How would we combat the other issues. From the corporation's standpoint, why would they ever put up with any regulations when they could go to Indonesia or China?

I don't know what country I live in. I'm an American.

          jinthemidwest

Let me show everyone trillions in numbers $1,000,000,000,000.00 thank god i'll be dead so i wont have to pay this off. sorry kids :(

What we are missing here, is during the last 5 years guys in suits were gambling on who would be the loser, and who would be the winner.

          They won, we lost.

They placed bets on who would lose in any given deal. Like gambling. It was gambling. Legal. Not backed with cash.

Credit Default Swaps Put THAT in your search engine

These bright bulbs, over the past 5 years, wrote $60,000,000,000,000, that's Trillion (so add $59,000,000,000,000, Trillion to j's example)

of these gambling SWAPS. How much?

The GDP of all the nations of the world combined. US GDP?14 Trillion. Budget 3.5 Trillion.

SO, 2 months ago, when Obama took office

American companies were in contract for 60 Trillion dollars in swaps

As part of the DERIVATIVES market, which consists of $650 Trillion.

          That's 10 x the world GDP.

Along with that, if foreclosures are not stopped, if rampant unemployment isn't stopped, if the entire market isn't stabilized, including credit, what would happen? If housing keeps falling and many more loose jobs?

Do you want to find out? And it's not all fixed in two months!!!!!

$60 Trillion in Swaps can not be cured by tax cuts on the rich or oil drilling in the ocean.

These facts are available, they are easy to find, check my page for more. The cost of the fix is high.

The contract was $60 Trillion The CEO's all went free, rich and happy

We are left with the bill This is the bill, paid for by you and me, benefiting all of them

We should be praying for anyone who has the responsibility to get us out of the mess

On that we should all agree

These pages are based in frustration so understandable

not based in a solid grip of fact, though, and that's scary

Lor - The alternative to spending and borrowing from the future is stagnation and ultimately destruction. You MUST look at our economic struggles as a type of life or death war. How much would you spend to win this war? The death of our economy and the United States is unacceptable.

Fisherman - The economy isn't going to die if we don't give the President a blank check. His spending is reckless and ultimately will damage this country more than help it. Whats happening is an adjustment. We, as a country, have been living beyond our means. The result is excessive spending and debt. The economy has to contract back to a sustainable level and then it will begin to grow again without the aid of the President.

Given having knowledge of and from whom the questions would come our illustrious president seem to have been out done by NYS Attorney General while showing signs of inconsistency and inaccurate in various aspects of what was to have been a staged forum.

While praising veterans he failed to acknowledge the fact that the government is doing nothing for past, present or even future veterans but in fact have outsourced services to such entities as Mt. Sinai Hospital to be used as Mt. Sinai Hospital training facility experimenting on veterans.

Mr. President’s anger over questioning about AIG and the ever increasing trillion dollar deficit only served to demonstrate how out of touch with reality this administration truly is. Smoke and mirrors have not been enough to guise what is truly happening in Washington and only a fool would believe that one can build a new house on a rotten foundation nevertheless the main focus seem to have been moving towards implementation of Hilary Clinton’s health care package.

Concessions, concessions simply to get one’s name in history books that will one day be re-written as has past history been changed to appease a beguiled socioeconomic populace grappling with an identity crisis and reality conundrum.

While back at the ranch, Paterson has finally made a positive choice appointing Justice Luis Gonzalez to succeed an inept Jonathan Lippman as Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division. NYS, is it possible that finally some form of justice can be forth coming from an inconsistent legislation and corrupt and questionable judiciary where only Cuomo and now Gonzalez seem to be able to demonstrate even a remote sense of common decency with some form truth, honor and integrity; only time will tell because AIG is merely a warning sign of things yet to be exposed and still no action has been taken. Thank you, Mr. President, for living up to expectations.

It has been interesting to note that the administration’s recovery plans is six years beyond their term of office but seemingly forecasting that there will be a second term? The only truth coming out of long recovery speech was none! Nothing more than the same rhetorical nonsense intended to guise whatever plans Washington has for an unsuspecting populace while Paterson is slated to layoff near 9,000 union employees to balance a budget that no political figure has yet to give back or otherwise reduce their salaries, full or part-time such as, the New York City Council, New York State Assembly and Senator, U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and a host of others including the MTA that is top heavy and bottom empty. Thanks again, Mr. President, for living up to expectations.

New swing sets while many across America struggle to keep a roof over their heads, food on the table and clothes on their backs with demands for – Give Backs – and we hold these truths to be self-evident that all men (women and children) are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights – life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Thank you again, Mr. President, for proving me right in that all that is happening is a façade played on the American people and there are those that would defend against the realities of truth while the facts speak for themselves.

Recklessness in Washington filtered down to recklessness across America from New York City and State to California and beyond and there is no end in sight. Oh, what tangled webs we weave when we practice to deceive; isn't that correct Mr. President.

By all accounts, it's already at 11 trillion in new or pledged spending. This is unsustainable and will result in raging inflation, punitive taxes, bankruptcy of the nation or all three. Sure he inherited a 1.2 trillion or whatever debt from the former admin/congress/senate. That was bad enough. Now he blows those figures out of the water while trying to insist what came before was worse. Please, everyone, write your congressmen and senators. New spending has to be stopped or this nation is going under. Don't forget to send them a tea bag on April 15 also. This madness has to stop. Let the chips fall where they may, I for one think it's out right thievery for them to take my money, which I try to carefully manage, and give it to those who are responsible for creating the current day situation. He says we will not reward failure, just another outright lie. The present programs reward failure and penalize those who have played by the rules. We are being played like unthinking pawns. If you believe that he will not reward failure, then you also have to believe that in the same way, he will go line by line though the budget to eliminate the waste, just as he did HA HA in the omnibus spending bill. Write and keep writing your reps. people. Most in the congress and senate, along with the pres., want to send this American train straight to hell. We have to stop it now.

I'm waiting here for 1 of the 48 people who just commented to have 1 informed, educated, or well thought out PLAN on how to tackle 60 trillion in contracts.

What would you do if YOU walked into office? Try this one on:

              Unemployment 8.9%, should stall at 10%, or possibly 20% 7.9 on 1/20/09

Credit, the life blood of this country, is frozen

Foreclosures? "More than 2.3 million American homeowners faced foreclosure proceedings last year, an 81 percent increase from 2007."www.realtytrac.com

Lehman Brothers, gone, Bear Sterns, bought for 2$ a share, "As of October 2008, stocks in North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region had all fallen by about 30% since the beginning of the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average had fallen about 37% since January 2008." http://en.wikipedia.org/

Along with that, American companies had sold 60 Trillion $ in "Swap" insurance, (http://salemsage.newsvine.com/_news/2009/03/19/2564585-a-clear-and-logical-explaination-of-the-financial-meltdown for more info)

That is $60, 000,000,000,000.00 More than the Gross National Product (GDP) of all the nations in the world! THAT is how much the swaps market was in 9/08. Lehman Brothers OWED more money than it had!

              _______________________________

So, unemployment, no credit, foreclosures, Stock Market diving, Huge financial institutions failing, banks failing, and American companies with contracts to pay back MORE MONEY THAN EXISTS IN THE WORLD to companies all over the world!!!!!!!!!

What would you do? Let them fail!!!! is the educated cry!! Say goodbye to jobs - 35% unemployment, most loosing pension funds, no credit, no economy. Bad plan.

Cut taxes on the rich and drill for oil in the ocean. That's the republican plan. Would you gamble the world economy, and 60 trillion in debt to hope that tax cuts on top will fix 60 trillion in worldwide debt? BUT, I DON'T SEE 1 PERSON SO FAR WHO CAN SAY ANYTHING BUT:

"Oh you mean succeed in enslaving our children, the main problem is the economy get people back to work and forget about everything else until we get all the economic problems solved.Lock and load America, a big storm is coming!! "

A huge solution for a huge problem.

I hereby challenge 1, just 1 person who thinks this is all Obama's fault - to give us an idea of what could have been done instead.

This mess was created while Bush was CEO of this country. THAT is not debatable. He's off on a "no shoes allowed" speaking tour. Don't bother to think we should figure out what he did and never do it again, stop blaiming Bush!!! Is the cry.

We are sitting here ripping apart the guy who was left to fix it.

I wonder how long the world will let us be the holder of the money?

I am just uninformed and uneducated and dont think things out well, so can you please educate little ole' me as too how Obama's plan fixes this. And I hope you can do it in your own words, instead of repeating the sound bites you have heard.

What would you do if YOU walked into office? Try this one on:

              Unemployment 8.9%, should stall at 10%, or possibly 20% 7.9 on 1/20/09

Note from Indep - Hope people have saved enough money to get by for a year, instead of racking up credit card debt. This is what my financial advisor told me to do. I do not think the unemployment rate is a good thing, but I don't understand how Obama's plan is going to fix this. Can you enlighten me?

Credit, the life blood of this country, is frozen

Note from Indep - Funny, my credit lines, actually backed by assets and an excellent credit rating, has worked just fine through-out the financial crisis.

Foreclosures? "More than 2.3 million American homeowners faced foreclosure proceedings last year, an 81 percent increase from 2007."www.realtytrac.com

Note from Indep - That is less than 2% of the housing market. So what? Let them get foreclosed, maybe "normal" people will be able to afford housing again.

Note from Indev: Yes I took all of my money out, and until our Leaders stop changing the rules every day, it will stay out.

Along with that, American companies had sold 60 Trillion $ in "Swap" insurance, (http://salemsage.newsvine.com/_news/2009/03/19/2564585-a-clear-and-logical-explaination-of-the-financial-meltdown for more info)

Note from Indev - I am not very intelligent, so can you help me with your point here?

              Peace,

The problems that you listed above are likely accurate, what I would now love to see, is how Obama's plan addresses each one of the issues you raised above?

This mess was created while Bush was CEO of this country. THAT is not debatable. He's off on a "no shoes allowed" speaking tour. Don't bother to think we should figure out what he did and never do it again, stop blaiming Bush!!! Is the cry.

I don't think this is all Obama's fault... I think anyone who thinks it is 1 persons fault has their head in the sand. This problem very complex for the unintelligent was created by our leaders both Dem and Rep.

In your final thought you made a great point, the world will loan Obama all the money it takes to OWN us! China and France are already making public comments about our run away spending. Too be fair it started with GW, and if spending huge amounts of borrowed money was the solution, wouldn't everything be okay right now, since GW was such a reckless spender?

Indepvoter - kudos. Excellent post, excellent questions!

              1. Foreclosures - $70 billion targeted at keeping people in their mortgages.

"About $50 billion of the money would come from the $700 billion financial industry bailout package, a senior administration official said Friday. Nationalized mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will contribute more than $20 billion to the loan modification program, mainly to subsidize interest rates so troubled borrowers' monthly payments can be lowered to affordable levels." http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/02/22/obama.housing/

              2. Stop unemployment - that is the stimulus. It pours government (taxpayer) money into projects and infrastructure. "

"With the $787 billion from the stimulus package beginning to roll out of Washington's coffers, the money is arriving in places like Columbus, Ohio, where it's covering the salaries of 25 police cadets, and Kansas, where it's funding the widening of U.S. 69 outside of Kansas City." http://www.usnews.com/

We all know that debate - is it enough, will it work? This is where Dems and Repubs differ. Repubs are at war with this plan and state that tax cuts on the rich and oil drilling in the ocean are all that's needed to stop job loss.

Almost all the uninformed voters you see here are regurgitating some talking point against the stimulus. Socialism, huge deficits, burdens on our children. Yes, but conservative economic policy made the mess, their answer of tax cuts and oil drilling, not even close to a fix. Hugely more risk, though. With the 60 trillion owed in swap contracts, and the need for unemployment to be stopped NOW, RIGHT NOW! 20% for-casted unemployment will kill this country. Economic growth here over the past 5 years was based on companies selling 60 trillion in non-collateralized swap contracts, NOT tax cuts on the wealthy.

What would you gamble the fate of the world's economy on? Cash infusions to start projects and jobs, or tax cuts on the rich? They have a price tag, too, don't forget.

              3. The $ we are spending in bailouts - is to payback the swaps that were sold. Easy to understand. What would happen if we wrote contracts for $60 trillion, to companies all over the world ... and then said, Oh darn, well, we change our minds. You paid million $ premiums, but we are reneging on the whole thing! We hold the world bank - what do you think would happen if we reneged on $60 trillion in contracts?

So, those are the 3 main points in short. Huge fix for Huge problem.

He didn't spend money on much that produced growth, fixed the economy (remember, though, we did have 2 stimulus packages under Bush, 1 in Jan '08 and 1 in September), or did anything much but waste. 3 trillion in Iraq. A few private contractors made millions.

We ran out of money - when American companies wrote more contacts for swaps than we produce as a country in 5 years. US GDP = 14 trillion. Swaps = 60 trillion. That happened while Bush was CEO.

The bigger issue, is the world economies revolve around us. When we screw up this bad - they loose massively. How long will world governments put up with that? Especially when the American public is so uninformed, it blames the wrong guy and lets the guilty guy go free? Would YOU put YOUR money into a system like this if you were a sovereign nation?

But, great questions, Thanks again. Hope

There is much more information on swaps on my site here, click on my name at the top.

The buying of toxic assets should and would have been the first program we would have ran.

This same model worked suring the S&L fiasco back in 89-91 and cost the taxpayer nothing. I am more amazed at how many people have lost their homes by passing useless moneypit programs that have not worked ever.

Now we want to expand Treasury (ran by the guy who could not do his taxes) power's to have governmental control over companies on the periphery of the recession?

Just someone please tell me one government program that has ever fulfilled its purpose at cost? Social Security is broke, medicare broke, welfare has created generational poverty (but a voting base).

The current Bad Bank plan is a great idea, but you do not present that asking hedge funds to finance it and then immediately say we will regulate and takeover hedge funds as we see fit.

                    President Obama:
If we are all in this together, as you have just said, then we all need to make sacrifices, including having the congress refuse their recent raise, and assuring that there are no more government raises until the economy shows a positive (let's say 5% GNP growth).
If you are not willing to negotiate this, then you are all talk and no matter.
For once in you life, step up to the foul line and sink a basket, instead of stinking up the court.

Has anyone else noticed the decline in Obama support on these threads over the past few weeks? Even the Bush bashing is withering away. There is no defense anymore.

Oh, and I have always wanted to try Kobe beef but always thought it silly to waste that kind of money. Common Sense Washington! There are times for parties and good times but when Rome is burning?

I am an American ladies and gentlemen and I am mad as hell.

Sacrifice for all of us--starting with our head of state I would hope. Why don't you drive one of those little electric car deathtraps you want the rest of us in, turn don YOUR thermostat, move into a small apartment and give the White House to the homeless you have created with drops in Wall Street caused by your mere election and by everything out of your mouth since.

Be an example of sacrifice--no???? Then we should all follow the leader! Spend big on parties! Fly around in a jet to avoid responsibility or being asked hard questions about our jobs and rely on the public to pay for all the things we need/want/oughta be entitled to because we are still warm.

Mr. Obama, "when the trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who will follow it into battle?" Every day you change your tune--we will not follow your uncertain sound.

Yes, indyfinn, I have noticed that the common folk are changing their attitude. But after watching the big news conference tonight, I also noticed that the media toadies have not. Brian Wilson had his usual orgasm during the wrap up show.

Until media get some integrity, the Obamawagon will continue to roll. But don't hold your breath. Tea parties, attended by thousands, have been held in dozens of cities across the country. How much coverage of this have you seen on NBC....CNN....CBS....ABC....???

There are real People suffering in America right now. They want answers and they're not getting them. All they hear is nonstop butt kissing from the media and the People are getting fed up with it.

all americans - be careful; we are on the verge of a hostile take over by someone that does not even qualify as president. start checking all of the court cases against obama/soertoro. and he expects us to make sacrifices! why doen't he stop the excess spending at the white house every wed.? why doesn't congress take a cut in pay, rather than increase their salaries? why are we going to allow anyone to dictate to private sector? are we now going to become socialists, or communists? we - americans, need to take control of the people that represent "us", not allowing this country and it's people to be dragged to the ground! just as we voted them in, let get them out! starting with this fool that is not even a usa natural born citizen. read the constitution! stand up for what it stands for - you, me and our children ! in order to be elected to the highest office in the land, president- the person must be a natural born citizen; born of two, not one natural born usa citizen. if you must provide proof of whom you are, who give dumbo the right to refuse to submit all documents being required of him by several court cases. including mr. berg, who happens to be a democrat. at least he has morals, if he ever runs for office - i will gladly vote for him.

                    Can ANY of the 10 "informed Americans" who just posted expalin what America shoud do in the face of;

THESE ARE THE FACTS - EASILY FOUND AND UNDERSTOOD. NOT HARD.

Yet - this is the bright response Americans have:

"we are on the verge of a hostile take over,Watch Fox News. They are blowing out MSNBC,Until media get some integrity, the Obamawagon will continue to roll. Why don't you drive one of those little electric car deathtraps you want the rest of us in, turn don YOUR thermostat, move into a small apartment and give the White House to the homeless you have created with drops in Wall Street caused by your mere election (???? WTF? THAT was the cause??? how ignorant can you be?) and by everything out of your mouth since."

I could go on and on.

I challenge every one of you to give us your ideas of how you fix

$60 trillion in swaps, unemployment, stocks being virtually worthless, for closures up 81% and the credit market frozen.

Huh? You bright bulbs out there? Got answers?

What would YOU do? You fox watching, fantastically uninformed, bad comment writing Americans? What do YOU propose?

Other than sitting around bashing truth with ignorance. Something you have gotten great at.

Not only should there be a pay freeze on ALL Politicians until we get our country back on track, but Politicians should NOT be allowed to collect their pay indefinately. The House and Senate positions, are part time positions. There is no justification in allowing these people to live off the taxpayers forever!! Limit all pay and benefits to only during the stint of their service. That alone would cut millions each year in government spending.

Pure unadulterated BS. Nothing more than a ultra left wing govenment power grab. Takeovers of banks, insurance, financial investments, health care, energy industry by thwarting any and all means of using domestic resources; ie, oil, natural gas, nuclear, coal and on and on. Pouring more and more monies into transfer payments. If his tax bill passes - 48% of Americans will pay no federal income taxes! Moderate Democrats and Republicans (since there is no other alternative it seems) need to get off their behinds, pay attention and put the brakes on this insanity.

What new seizure powers??? I am not ok with that. Please provide support.

While I am uneasy at the thought of what they were doing with the bonuses, they will most likely be constitutional. Remember, constitional and popularity are separate beasts.

Comments from WSJ and Harvard Prof. Lawrence Tribe:

Bill of Attainder: Article I, Section 9 of the Constitution prohibits Congress from passing Bills of Attainder, laws that punish a single person or specific group of people without affording them a trial. Would a law that targeted AIG executives violate the prohibition on Bills of Attainder?

                          Responded Tribe:

I do think Congress (and the Executive Branch) could avoid serious Bill of Attainder problems by passing a sufficiently broad law … rather than targeting a closed class of named executives even though the prohibition against Bills of Attainder, unlike that against Ex Post Facto laws, potentially reaches civil as well as criminal penalties.

Ex Post Facto Clause: Article I, Section 9 of the Constitution also, generally speaking, prohibits Congress from passing laws that apply retroactively. Would a law that imposed a tax on past-gotten earnings violate the Ex Post Facto Clause?

                          Responded Tribe:

The Ex Post Facto Clause applies exclusively to criminal punishment and poses no difficulty here. And the fact that the measure contemplated would operate retroactively as well as prospectively doesn’t distinguish it from any number of tax and other financial measures that the Supreme Court has upheld over the claim that fundamental fairness precludes retroactively undoing contractual obligations.

Contract Impairment Clause: Article 1, Section 10 of the Constitution states: “No state shall . . . pass any Law . . . impairing the Obligation of Contracts.” Now, what about this? With the passage of the law, wouldn’t the government effectively be impairing contracts made between AIG and its executives?

Tribe had a quick dispatch for the ol’ Contract Clause:

The Contract Impairment Clause applies exclusively to state legislation and has no federal counterpart that would pose any difficulty in this setting.

The Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment: The Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment states: “No person shall be . . . deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.”

On the issue of procedural due process — generally speaking, on whether a person is given adequate access to the legal system and its procedures — Tribe said this also isn’t a problem.

There’s no suggestion that people would be targeted for payback obligations without notice and a fair opportunity to be heard on questions such as mistaken identity, so procedural due process would be satisfied.

On the issue of substantive due process — that is, whether a “liberty” has been taken away by a given act of Congress — Tribe said:

And, as to substantive due process, the only relevant requirement would be that the challenged measure be rationally calculated to achieve a legitimate government purpose, something nobody could deny in this instance.

The Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment: The Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment states: ” . . . nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.” The clause is the one that requires payment for property “taken” by the government’s eminent domain power — the power to, say, grab a piece of property to build a public road. In response to our question on whether tax on AIG executives might constitute an unconstitutional “taking,” Tribe responded:

Tax measures [generally speaking] are simply not vulnerable to challenge under the Takings Clause. . . The point of the Takings Clause is to require compensation for the fair market value of private property validly confiscated for the public’s benefit, not to prevent the exaction of a tax that Congress is within its constitutional authority to impose.

It's the same power the FDIC has with banks right? That's the issue now, isn't it? The ability to intervene on humongous businesses that aren't banks?

( Sounds like socialism )

                            1. You can't sue using the preamble of the Constitution. The preamble is used to illuminate meaning to the Constitution's context as a whole. Basically, it means that when Congress or the President makes a decision based on trade or the common defense, those actions can be justified based on their importance illustrated in the preamble. See EEOC v. Wyoming in dicta.

                            2. It doesn't sound like anything is finalized as far as who will be released and their combatant status:

"For people who can be released there are a variety of options that we have and among them is the possibility is that we would release them into this country," Mr. Holder said. "That process is ongoing and we've not made any determinations or made any requests of anybody at this point." Among the detainees whose fate remains undetermined are 17 ethnic Uighurs, from the Central Asian region of China, who have been ordered released by a judge. The U.S. has refused to turn the men over to China, which considers them part of an separatist group." AG Eric Holder

The ability to seize non-financial companies not being run to the liking of the Administration. This is blatently against the Constitution and against contract law in its entirety.

Um, ok, all the fincial institutions in the world, banks, on and on, were in on this idea to bring socialism through an orchestrated world financial crisis.

Yes, great explaination. There ISN"T 60 trillion in swaps contrcts, everything is made up.

Michele-659633 Could you relate to us a useful idea that might address this crisis.

I assure you - it's not orchestrated - unless it was Bush's great plan, to bring us all socialism? Was that your point?

I can: $60,000,000,000,000.00,That's how much American companies wrote in swap contracts, that we still on the hook for, over the past 5 years.

That's more than all the movie stars could spend in all the world!!!!!!!!!!!

COMMAND that I contribute money to support her frivolous spending.

George Bush commands you spend this bailout money - he allowed $60 trillion in swaps to be written by American companies while he was CEO of America. We can't back out of contracts that investors paid millions in premiums to buy.

Obama seems to have no understanding of economics. His plans will create high energy prices, high food prices, high inflation and higher taxes. How is this going to make life better for Americans?

I can understand his need to attempt to rip America from the need for oil, this is just not the time to try this.

Buy pursuing Cap and trade we will pay more in the long term as consumers and the "weatherization" will not save us the money that energy companies will have to pass on. Granted, President Obama will just make them Enemies of the State, do a speech or publish an article and everyone will turn on them.

I thought we were supposed to be working towards lowering green house causing gasses. How does "Cap and Trade" do that? It appears that all it does is generate billions of dollars for whatever special interests the government wants to give them to and raise prices we pay for everything. It in no way lowers the amount of gasses emitted.

Can you imagine if we had elected McCain? He'd be tax cutting us out of a $60 trillion $ mess.

Conservative economics trying to solve the mess conservative economics made.

There's a plan for 'ya. Think unemployment is bad now? Tax cuts as a way out of global economic meltdown is like aspirin to cure cancer.

So, maybe you bright bulbs didn't vote for Obama, but if Macain was in there, we'd be doomed. Check out the republican stimulus. 3 pages of tax cuts. Sounds great, 6% of economists support it. 94% state it is economically silly.

No time for silly when we have to pay back $60 trillion in contracts American companies wrote over the past 5 years.

Unless we all stand up and FORCE a confidence vote! I know there is no allowance for this in our constitution, but remember, there was no chance for America's to voice their opinion when we rebelled against Britain.
I am not suggesting any armed rebellion, just, by petition, forcing a confidence vote in all states. When Obama doesn't respect this, we will know his true, oops, I can't use color,so let's say, heart.

Actually, several inherited bigger problems, based on the size of the country at that time. Obama has almost tripled what he inherited in under sixty days. That is a new record.

The only thing that Obama has that is not normal is that he is from an ethnic group, yet he was the one that, even according to tonights mis-information session, doesn't see that as relavent.

                                  Dawn,

I agree that the Republicans spent excessively. But, does it make it right that the democrats spend more? The 400 Billion for universal healthcare is a down payment. Cutting the deficit in half is an absurd statement when your basis is a greatly increased deficit in the first year. Any contribution made by corporations will be passed on to consumers. That might not be a direct tax on the average American, but it is a tax none the less. Social programs are nothing more than you already have or can get. The only difference is it costs more for the additional "middle" man (the government). Think about it...money is taken from New Jersey and Connecticut and sent to Washington DC and redistributed to other states with lower incomes after the federal government skims off of the top. Consequently, those states have to raise taxes to fund their own programs. It is pure foolishness to think this level of spending is a good thing. We already spend more money on education than any country in the world and we are not seeing the dividend from this investment. So, obviously the solution is not more spending. We already spend more money on healthcare than any country in the world and everyone is not covered. We have the second highest corporate taxes in the world and we still can't balance our budget or allow for 5 weeks vacation like socialist European countries. The solution is the elimination of "middle" men to reduce the cost and improve the quality. Our largest social program (social security) is the most underfunded pension program in the world yet receives the largest monthly infusion. The list of government inefficiencies goes on and on. Democrat or Republican, spending more than you bring in is not a solution.

Answer--Harry Truman--inherited post war with Germany and ended war with Japan and the tail end of the great depression and an era of well intentioned government programs that didn't really work. Not only had to rebuild our economy--largely responsible for contributing the rebuilding of Japan.

northbarn1, check again. Truman was elected in 1945. He did not have to deal with war with Germany only politics with Russia of how to deal with East and West Germany. I won't downplay the hardships but post-war is not the same as a current conflict. How many troops did we commit to Japan and how long was that engagemnt. Roosevelt had to deal with the Great Depression and it was mostly over by Truman's election. Again, dealing with the after effects of a catastrophe as not the same as finding one's way through it.

I think the country is falling along two lines of thought. Work on the economy only or work on multiple agenda's as well. I agree with the latter category as well as his policies on healthcare.

Don't accuse me of drinking the kool-aid. Too sweet. I personally refuse to come to a final decision on his agenda until I have to vote next election cycle. Same with Congress. I am betting on him being right, but I'm not foolish enough to believe he can't be wrong. I'm no economist so who am I to say? Any of us really???

Excessive spending. A practical solution to pay for the bailouts. Pay workers a living wage. I know what you're thinking: increased prices to the consumer. However, if we bumped say 40% of the country into the tax paying bracket, would it not help offset costs by now including another base of tax payers. Furthermore, with more discretionary income they can probably afford those luxury goods once produced by minimum wage workers: McDonalds, Bestbuy, Wal-Mart, Target, Lowe's. Chances are these noveau riche were shopping there anyway. Now they spend more to help offset the price of higher priced goods.

Wow! This is a time when I wish we had the British Cabinet form of government and could force a confidence vote. This thread is on MSN for crying out loud and has been quite liberal or at least balanced in the past. Now it seems all Obama's supporters are too ashamed to even show their faces around here.

A lot of my Democrat friends (real true blue Americans--not commies) are startled how far and fast Obama has become the man in his books. Wish more people had read them. He hung out with Marxist professors, tows the Marxist line and said, "If the winds blow in an unfortunate direction I will stand with the Muslims." What did we not know about this guy who hangs out with terrorists and funds foreign sources of Muslim terrorism as well as being best buddies with William Ayers, our own domestic terrorist who only got off a life prison term because of an irregularity.

Obama is Unconstitutional indeed! Every breath he breaths sucks life out of the Constitutional principals of freedom and opportunity!

Can we please call for a vote of confidence. Even here in liberal Seattle, my D friends (I have voted both tickets every election since I started voting) are saying, "Whooooo Pardner! Too much spending! Too much paper being printed! Too stupid on your foreign policy!"

Bumping the bottom 40% earners (who, currently, pay no taxes) into a tax paying bracket would cause hyper inflation. Also, every company you mentioned, pays more than minimum wage in my area of the country. A fairer solution is a VAT or Flat tax without any tax loopholes. Reduce corporate taxes to zero for any manufacturing based corporation to relocate to the US and higher US workers.

Hey Dawn, Truman was not elected in 1945. He was elected in 1948. In 45' he suceeded FDR who passed away. Nice command of the facts!

Thanks for the semantics. Have something to say of value? See 9.12

Dave, I guess it depends on your definition of living wage. How much does one need to get by on the bare necessities. In South Carolina, our counterparts are making less.

Could they be taxed staggered ala slowly introducing new wagers to help offset hyperinflation?

We have fundamental differences but I understand why you would call for a flat tax. My argument for paying more in taxes...even the Romans put on gladiator games to entertain the overwhelming jobless plebians in the city. I want to avoid a civil war.

                                        Dawn,

Essentially President Obama did not inherit anything he campaigned by spending an unheard of $650 million dollars. This is almost twice of what McCain did.

With that out of the way.

Dawn, How do you think we are going to pay for this? Seriously, please tell me how we as a country are going to get the revenue for this future President Obama has envisioned?

                                          Dawn,

$9 per hour. Our economy has become so global and internationally intertwined that our costs must be comparative to be competitive to avoid massive unemployment and hopefully bypass the gladiator games. I don't like the fact that we compete with other lower paid countries, but it does note change the fact that we do. Protectionism didn't work in the past. With our peddling of our debt to foreign interests, we are not in a position to take these steps. We have seen where we have had to watch the tone of our rhetoric toward China regarding human rights. A decade ago, China would have never publicly warned our government of excessive spending. Keynes economics relies on a direct stimulation of the individual and/or business. Unfortunately, government funds are sourced from individuals and businesses. The only way for the government to stimulate the economy is to print more money (inflation), raise taxes, borrow (increased debt), or reduce government programs. This is how President Clinton accomplished the balanced fiscal year budget. He significantly reduced the military (no longer making Airland Battle viable), but it paid for everything he did. Obama does not have that option since it would have grave consequences that I will not and cannot elaborate.

Demitrix as to your first point I'm confused. He didn't start two wars or bring on the recession so...

As to your second, I have no friggin clue. LOL! 9.12 was my first attempt. But the reality is his failure or triumph can only be judged down the line.

Dave, is there ever a great time to start a program or is this just the worst time. What about the revenue from some of the newly created programs? Don't discount the money that can be made indirectly -someone's going to need a lawyer, construction, accounting, film and tv, etc.

Can one live off of $9 an hour? $360 a week?

I believe that there will be a war of some kind. I started stock piling canned goods and bottled water since Nov. I can not believe that people still can't see what is going on. I want to live my life my way and not the way government wants us to. We are not headed down the right path. Did you notice that there has been news on the tea parties or the people who are threatening the AIG people and where are favored polls that are always being taken? Ratings are more than likely down and they don't want them out there. Step by step America is going down. BO stated in a speech that the Constitution has a fundamental flaw in it, I wonder what he was talking about. I guess we will find out. As always just my opinion.

....Dawn...I lived, rented and raised a family of four on that kind of money while living in sunny Southern California...I worked 60-70 hours a week with my 'salaried' management position, bought a new truck, and drove a used VW and I was promoted and made more money...that is more than a starting wage and more than so many deserve because they didn't sacrifice to make something out of themselves when they were young or older...you are either quite young or you've never been responsible for developing a business from a owner's perspective...

the point is a starting wage is just that...if one wants to make a bundle of money at age 14-16 or older then they need to be prepared with the experience, education or raw talent that the market place will give them better than a 'starting' wage...

what a ridiculous point to think that way...IMHO...without skills other than muscle and good manners a bellman in LA needed only to show up and be dependable for his 'tipped' wage benefitting him/her and average 15-20+dollars an hour...now unions have forced their way into good ol' So Cal and you can't get a hotel in downtown under $300 per night when a only a few short years ago the same room could be had for under 100...how's the occupancy rate now compared to then??? down over 30%...ask anyone in the business there.. (but the bellman's wage is union-scale-- average starting @$15pr.hr. plus gratuity)

raise taxes spending decreases...lower taxes and spending increase...Econ 101

any way...what ever happened to earning a living and planning to do so???

                                                Geo, from the bottom up

Aside from any personal responsibility arguments, someone has to take these jobs right? Only 39% of the country has a college education. Not everyone can make it or strive up the corporate latter. Does Target, Bestbuy etc. have ways training programs to climb the latter? Or are most of them stuck?

I understand your argument about the hotel industry but is there data correlating this pattern. It would be a good reason to push out Unions. But it could be easily attributed to the same greed that got us into this mess -artificial price inflations.

What about the out-of-pocket costs such as health insurance, daycare, transportation?

You said you lived on that money and raised a family of four. That's definitely incredible and you sound like a driven individual. How long did you make minimum wage (around $9 an hour) and support your family on this income? Did your wife work? Did she make minimum wage? Do you have any degrees or trade skills that made it easier? Maybe you're a genius? But you can see that some people fall outside of these categories (no degrees, talent, or family support). It is them to whom I wonder about.

Almost out of school -last semester in law hell.

                                                  Dawn;

I should have explained more clearly; sorry...'lived on that kind of money'=that was a weekly salary...I haven't earned any money by 'the hour' since I left college, 1979-....yes I put myself through a four -year university and my skills offered me a whopping 10-12 grand a year so I opted for a management position in the hospitality business which paid more but also required alot more in terms of availability and time...my spouse only started working when my kids started elementary school...'

I don't believe my story is so 'incredible' ..it is quite the norm for hundreds of thousands of folks who persevere and attempt to prove to their employers that they are the best performers and are willing to live within their means all the while...

I care for all folks equally as I am considerate and try to live my life as the 'golden-rule' says...

I believe in a captialistic system and the republic that our Constitution is based upon...

I didn't mention of gaining my first home purchase with a lease-to-own; I was one of five leasees who actually followed through and gained the privilege to own my home...my health insurance costs were part of my compensation program a year after I was on the job.. so my weekly salary moved up to around 500 a week at that time...

I continued to work for others until I was lucky enough to be able to strike out on my own and am still self-employed and responsible for having 3 full-time and around 10-14 part-time employed and every one has been employed with me more than 2 years and more that 3/4 of the emp's have 4+ years with my business...

Most all of these things were planned and worked for and occurred with help (labor and small loans) from friends, family and banks & community leaders who were willing to risk some dollars based on a sound business projection backed by a resume which I suppose gave some belief-factor to enable those folks to do so...

Everyone has to start somewhere...usually unless one is extremely lucky..it is just what our system in the past gave anyone ...or one could rob a bank; or hope that acting worked or that they would grow to be a sports-star...

When I started in my business field-level management topped out at around 30M..now it is common to see the best field-level people earning well over 100m...in a short 10 years that was occurring as the service industry grew so rapidly through the 80s and 90s...

I have many good friends who are employed and partnered in law firms...but you know many already whom are ambulance chasers and whom aren't worried about anyone but their own self with regards to their law practice...I can think of two extremely narcissitic egostists whom play that to hilt..one Gloria and the other is Garagos(sp?)..both are excellent actors...just like our current President and so many before him...the state of California is representative of where our entire US is going to be like because of the rewards for the biggest companies and the small business people (under 100 employee level) are left out in legal terms from accessing the same tax-loopholes and are not able to gain any ground against those laws and regulations because of the inabilty to line political pockets as the 'fat-cats' are.

The current administration is gun-ho with the unions and have attempted legislation giving them free reign to harness as many companies into unionization without any recourse for the employer/employee...all the while doing so secretly behind closed-door sessions//..

I just want what's best for all...land of the free and home of the brave...alll are created equal and are given...

nothing hardly left of that anymore with the self-serving folks elected to reresent the people...ethics and their greed aren't even thought of...Hillary and Obama and their admin and such are kept there by the AIG and other monster-sized business with the PAC money involved...that isn't constitutional at all..it was added as legislation to enable folks to do what's been explained in other posts...it is called the 'new world order' and it is ocurring right before our eyes...that is friggin' more than ridiculous and not rewarding of any common persons' efforts at achieving the 'American-dream'

I don't want drafts, or mandatory service of any kind thrust down my throat...I serve and give the best way I know how publically and through my church. This is what anyone can do...but it is not what the current administration wants and has already put that system into effect (nearly)...

hope your life is better than what mine is and I hope that for all folks...but I don't think that top wage earners as you aspire to be perhaps, should be penalized for their brains or their brawn...which ever it is..

Go to their websites, & and you can decide for yourself if what they stand for and what their platforms are agree with your vision of America. They are not a bunch of kooks, they believe the Constitution was written purposefully and that it remains one of the greatest documents in human history.

Sadly I think to the current crop of politicians and many who write here, its just so much toilet paper to wipe oneself with.

Ross Perot was so far ahead of the times that it is almost disgusting. If he had choosen a better vice president candidate we might not be in the situation we are currently in.

That said, I have looked at several of the sights, but all I see is radical propoganda. I am looking for a realistic alternative, not some radical group that has only a limited support.

Paul is not a Republican, or what passes as a Republican these days. He is as Libertarian as it is possible to be. I am a liberal and my only real problem with Paul is his unshakable belief in totally unfettered marketism, the same unregulated policies demanded by the economic conservatives that has put us into this whole damn mess. (BTW, Dr. Paul delivered my baby daughter in 1970.)

There are only two ways to approach the economic problems we now face:

                                                  1. Do nothing. Let "market forces" "self correct", which will surely result in a severe depression of considerable length. Is that what America and the world wants?

                                                  2. Spend the money to try and restart the economy with stimulus in areas that are badly needed, such as the aging infrastructure and creating new jobs in new and growing industries such as green development.

Either of these two choices will be unwelcome to certain ideological slants. If we do nothing, then people will holler. If we try to stimulate the economy by spending, people will holler. But, even more disturbing is how many Americans wish for this President to fail. Not only is this insane, but it shows how vicious and undeserving we have become. His failure means failure for all Americans, not just the opposite ideology. Shame on us for being a divided people. We know what Lincoln said about that don't we.

I want the socialist programs of this president to fail because I see what communisim has done in the other parts of the world where it is tried. I have Russian partners. I have Ethiopian friends. I worked for ten years with refugees from Pol Pot in Cambodia. I don't want to live in the new USSR--the United States Socialist Republic and, from the constant tone of this thread, neither do the vast majority of you. Let's all get off this thread and write to our Senators and Congressmen and most of all the White House. WE see pressure can be effective as the White House has dumped the inane idea of having troops pay for their wounds with their own private insurance!

I see with horror the socialized medicine mess in Canada just north of our borders. A recent article "Canadian Health Care We So Envy Lies In ruins, Its Architect Admits" is an article on IBD you can check out. Castonguay, author of Socialized medicine from Quebec says his system is in "crisis" even after they enacted rationing (if you are too old or have chronic diseases just die please). They are now undergoing a radical overhaul. "We are proposing to give a greater role to the private sector so that people can exercise freedom of choice" says Castonguay.

Duh! What a concept! That is what we already have here so why would we want this hideous president to succeed in forcing us into such a system when all but 12% of our population is now covered by private health insurance?

Every single proposal from this President are to enslave us in debt, Socialized medicine, not utilizing our resources, enslave us to stupid energy policies in the name of the false "Global Warming" church. Fact is for three years straight the earth is cooling. It is the same folks who want a crisis even admitted by Clinton and Rham Emanuel to allow us to be forced to live as they wish to control us and enslave us with our own consent.

This president is left of Lenin and his philosophy (his books say he loved Marxism and "will stand with the Muslims" if the wind blows in an unfavorable way) is far left of most of this population. He is starting to exhibit a lot of characteristics of adictator--most ever executive orders to bypass even his own liberal Congress for example. I wonder if we will get to vote in 2010!

There is a reason why gun sales are skyrocketing in the US. I'm seeing a lot of trucks flying confederate flags and that is here in WAshington State--far from the Mason Dixon line. That can't be good!

Worst press conference for Obama because there were several reporters that asked "meaningful" question, most of which Obama talked around.

Obama is above the people. Obama is above the congress. Obama is even above the media that created him.

TheChef, 24 hours before President Obama even mentioned Immigration reform, Nancy Pelosi was filmed in a church calling Law Enforcement un-patriotic and illegal immigrants the true patriots. Next day President Obama started to push Immigration Reform.

The stimulus package was passed and suddenly an executive order was revoked and put into vote in the Senate and House by the Administration was buy making Union Votes public knowledge, taking away the ability to secretly vote by employees.

President Obama has what he calls his "private army" of grassroot voters that he as said he will use to get public opinion to pass the Budget.

Even moreso, pre G20 summit Leaders said they do not want to pass massive Stimulus packages and would rather regulate and lead their economies. Today, President Obama published in 31 papers worldwide doing an endrun around their leadership to their constituents.

Currently, he trying to expand the Department of Treasury from non party affiliated oversight groups. i.e. the Government can takeover companies they feel can affect the economy. I am all for not having monopolies, but the government needs to regulate and not just takeover.

I do not think the President means to take us into an evil place. However, he has never done anything in his entire collegiate or political career that has ever worked. The programs he has been proposing is money we will eventually have to pay for as a people. We do not have the option for "not a perfect plan" or to "see what sticks".

Please, I do not have the answers myself, but if you could. Please point out any program the President has ever forwarded or been part of that succeeded. Please point out ANY Government program that has ever succeeeded in the end.

Illegal aliens get money through state and federal services. Welfare, education, medical treatment, and inprisionment are some of the ways illegal aliens take taxpayer money. It is estimated that California spends 2 BILLION dollars a year on illegal aliens. Another drain on our economy is illegal drugs. The majority of illegal drugs and drug dealers in this country are hispanics bringing the drugs across the Mexican boarder. There is a huge drug war occuring along our border now involving drug leaders and the Mexican army. There are many diseases that are brought to this country across the Mexican boarder, especially subtropical ones, and parasites like lice and bed bugs. Our economy cannot aford the luxury of supporting millions of illegal aliens with our economy in such dire straits. Let the home countries, especially Mexico take care of their citizens.

                                                    OBAMA LIES, OUR ECONOMY DIES.

Remember Bush had a surplus in the tresury so where did that go? Obama is working to correct the problems. And if you are not an American you have no say in what we do nor do i have a say in what you do in your Country.

P.S Any of you Right Wing Fanatics im not a Liberal.

So you and Obama think the way to fix the country is spending more money than Bush, right?

Look at Obama's budget. Do the math. There is no chance in hell he leaves a surplus. None. But he will triple the national debt if he has his way and that's a certain.

Weren't you one of those people that complained endlessly about how much money Bush was spending? What makes it alright in your mind with Obama spending 3 times more money than Bush?

                                                      Why be a hypocrite?

Obama is no leader. He is bankrupting our nation, giving our jobs to illegals, kissing up to Muslim extremists, catering to the unions, catering to Pelosi, and God knows what else. The man is dishonest and has no integrity. He needs to be impeached before he completely ruins our country. We the people are going to have to take a stand and do what is necessary to save our country. The politicians are not going to do anything for us. They have proven that.

I am not defending GWB but he got terrorism dumped in his lap right after he came into office. Why did this happen? Because the Democrates didn't believe in retaliating when the World Trade Center got bombed the first time or for any other terrorist acts. This just opened up the door for the War Games that the last administration did.

"Military cuts accounted for a large portion as well. " Yeah, how many bases got closed during the Clinton years? That hurt a lot of communities around those bases and people lost jobs.

As a standing US Senator he knew exactly what was coming down the road. If you try to even search out his voting records as a Senator you will see they have been blocked. Run another senator out of office and you find his voting. Kind of weird.

Anyways President Obama did not inherit anything or he would not have spent twice as much as McCain to win.

                                                          President Obama,
You are weasel mouthing again. You are showing that you have no guts, only talk. Your talk about '"conditions that were in place before you took office" is basically Pelosi! It was your people that approved the AIG plan, not Bush's, so please quit trying to feed the public all this Pelosi! We are wise to it!
The American people are making a "host of sacrifices" in their daily life, and your poor decisions are making them make even more sacrifices. Have you ever taken even a basic economics class? If so, it is pretty obvious that you flunked it!
Your $1000.00 per person has disappeared. Your promised of a cut for the middle class is gone. All you are doing is spending our money...at a record pace.
You are the problem...not the solution.
Why don't you do the honorable thing and resign TODAY!
If not, you will only be considered a traitor in the future.
Your "Cap-and-trade" policy is basically another very large pile of Pelosi! You don't even know what has to be done to create your own pie-in-the-sky energy policy, nor do you have any concept of the cost or problems involved..
You talk about the 1.3 trillion dollar deficit you inherited, is minimal compared to what you have proposed.
You claim a growth rate of 2.6, if it is less will you RESIGN or just be considered an idiot?
You want all this money based on what you think, not what experts think. Please consult the experts in this country, in Europe and the world. They all agree on one thing YOU ARE AN IDIOT! Can you comprehend that!
Do you understand the concept of debt? You want to spend more to pay off debts that you cannot even pay more?
Why does your budget keep getting larger each year, when there is no indication of GNP growth, but you keep wanting to spend.
You want a "snap shot" of what is happening? I can suggest a view of your behind!! But that like your proposed budget isn't very pretty!
Why offer an alternative budget, when your own party will not even let them get involved in the stimulus program. Have you forgotten that the house LOCKED Republicans out while they "crafted" the porkulus bill!
Obama, you are a liar, and not a very good one.

But drugs do where off. I hope it is soon!
The media is beginning to show signs that their Obamessiah may not be the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Since the majority of the US public will not take the time to research anything, our only hope is that we can get the media criticising the "god" they created. Fox has never been in the fold, which is why he wanted sanctions against them during his campaign. If more open their eyes, or we MAKE more open their eyes, then we have a chance, otherwise you might want to check the immigration requirements for Australia or New Zealand.

Is it because of race, or is it because you think that he should continue with Bush's plan, which is destroying the country. I think we should stop judging him and give him a chance to do what he said he's going to do.You no I was raised to take care of home first before anything else, because no one else is going to do it. That's why I say give him a chance to take care of home or the U.S.A. before pissing on him.

Many on this site recently say, "I voted for Obama. He isn't keeping his promises. I'd not vote for him again." That is why the most recent Rasmussen poll shows a constant decline for Obama. T

I haven't seen any polls since last night's press conference, but I'm betting the Strongly Oppose just rose a couple of points and support probably dropped one or two so they may be getting close to equal.

Remember Bears-Stearn started this whole mess, the sno-ball headed for hell . Well it's not the end there are solutions to this whole problem. First the president and his congress could immediately stimulate the american people by forcing the credit card companies and anyone else who extends credit to reduce their interest to say 5% for those with good credit, 6% to those with so-so credit and 7% to those with bad credit and say we start effective 1july 2009, if that were accomplished the intake to these credit companies who have been fleecing americans to the tune of 20%, 26% and yes even 31% would be greatly reduced thereby reducing the exhoribitant bonus's these companies payout. We could repay our debts quicker giving us more money to spend on other things thereby restimulating the economy. Can you imagine what just this little start could turn into, who's to say, of course as usual someone will give 1000 reasons why this shouldn't work. Ithink if my idea with credit is picked up by someone who wants to see this as a beginning to our problems and spiff,s it up with some positive aspects it just may be the first step to recovery

If the Chinese dump theirs at 70 cents on a dollar, which is what they are asking, then you can not expect a penny more than that, and probably ten to fifteen percent less, regardless at what his Obamaship is saying as I type this.

Did Congress or this short-sighted President find anyone who would buy this debt before undertaking this spending program? That's like me buying a house and then saying, oh wait, the bank.

The stock market...or at least the Dow, took 100 years to break the 1000 mark. ONE THOUSAND IN 100 YEARS!

Reagan de-regulated certain things and it started an upswing. It continued and continued. And a select few got rich while the middle class (that FDR created) slowly went away. The rich got richer and the poor managed to hang on for a while.

Clinton came along and did NAFTA. I'm still trying to wrap my brain around that one. A person could fill a library with books for or against it. Global economics....ugh. Still not sure about that one. It's like quantum physics.

Bush 2 happened and the rich got even richer, at the expense of people who thought they were getting ahead.

And then BOOM. The DOW hit 14000, the rich were sitting back in their easy chairs feeling really rich, and then it all came tumbling down.

Where are we now? You have to love all that de-regulation. Greed rocks!

Instead of criticizing him, try supporting him for a minute. Your right, I'm one of those people who didn't like Bush at all, didn't care about me, my family or anyone else in the U.S.A, unless you make close to a million dollars a year. Give a chance and see what happens, can it be any worst then Bush or do you think that when Bush was in office he did an excellent job.

There is nothing amateurish about him. As he speaks, you can tell he isn't repeating what someone has told him. He has actually done the thinking and the planning. He has a firm grasp of the facts. Paul F is apparently feeling embarrrassed for himself and his party and former leader - or else he wouldn't be so rabidly defensive.

But I, as a business person could never spend the money that he has (with the congress) and expect to even break even in a few years. I'm glad that there will be jobs and enough money for everyone within a few years. Not sure where the money comes from that is going to be spent, but I will not worry because the congress runs this country and will not let anything fail.

Maybe he could talk on chat with a computer direct without actually spending more money to go to Europe. But he is the leader of our country and knows how to save dollars.
