BISMARCK — Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says $500 million in federal stimulus money will go to American Indian tribes across the U.S. for schools, housing, infrastructure improvements and job programs on reservations.

Salazar made the announcement Saturday at the United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck, N.D.

The Interior Department oversees the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Salazar said reservations face serious challenges and President Barack Obama wants to help American Indians "have a new beginning."

Salazar was in North Dakota to visit several places, including an energy center on the Fort Berthold reservation and the Great Plains Synfuels plant.

He also planned to visit North Dakota communities hit by flooding this spring.

If there is a group in the world that deserves a break, it is the Native Americans. I am ashamed of the injustices that our country justified.

I think the natives do just fine with all their casinos. Where I live there are 10 different casinos within a 60 mile circle. Every one of them lives in a newer home. They get free money just to live on the res. They don't need $500m .

I went to AZ on business and went through a reservation. Yeah, the casino was a magnificent, well-manicured structure, but the other dwellings were not what you'd call an upscale subdividion.

The concept of beings from outer space has provided fodder for sci-fi writers for over 100 years. Gee, what if it would be true? Of course, those of us here now would be seen as backward savages by beings with the ability to travel here. But if we're lucky and they're nice guys, they may set aside small pieces of prime desert land for us to live on...

America owes all Indians that are left a lot more than just $500 million dollars. Money cannot replace an entire culture that was wiped out by greed. Soon, there will be no more Indians at all. You can thank the creation of this country for that.
