Pakistani leader: Bin Laden 'may be dead' — or not

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan's president said Monday his intelligence agencies believe Osama bin Laden may be dead, but he added there is no proof. Other Pakistani officials and a U.S. counterterrorism official said they thought the al-Qaida chief is alive. U.S. officials said bin Laden is most likely hiding in the mountains along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan, in particular the lawless tribal regions.

"We continue to believe that bin Laden is alive," said the U.S. official, who declined to be named because he was not authorized to discuss the matter on the record.

Reports of bin Laden's death or of near-captures have punctuated his years on the run since the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S., only to be seemingly debunked by periodic audio and video recordings.

The latest recordings emerged in March, in which bin Laden referred to the December-January Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, calling it a "holocaust," and spoke of the January election of Somalia's U.N.-backed president, calling for him to be overthrown.

In an interview Monday with international media outlets, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said American officials had told him they do not know where bin Laden is.

"They are much more informed," Zardari said. "They've been actually after him for a longer time. They've got more equipment. They've got more intelligence. ... so they tell us they have no trace at the moment."

Zardari added that his country's intelligence agencies "obviously feel that he does not exist anymore," but he didn't explain how or when they reached that conclusion, and quickly qualified his comment by saying bin Laden "may be dead."

"That's not confirmed. We can't confirm that," he said. "It's still in between fiction and fact."

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, appearing later Monday with his visiting British counterpart at a news conference, seemed surprised when a reporter asked about Zardari's remarks.

"I don't know what are the comments of the president, but at the same time, I must clarify this, that nobody knows about Osama bin Laden," Gilani said. "We don't know about it, whether he is alive or dead."

Mahmood Shah, a former security chief in the tribal regions, said he believes bin Laden is alive. "Where, I don't know. If he had died, we would have heard a lot of noise among the militants. From that I'd guess that he is alive," he said.

Ben Venzke, director of IntelCenter, the U.S. contractor that tracks extremist propaganda, said it was unlikely al-Qaida would keep bin Laden's death a secret.

"Bin Laden's death will likely be celebrated by the group and its affiliates as him having achieved martyrdom as opposed to the group seeing it as a crushing and demoralizing blow," Venzke said.

Well, the first paragraph of the article pretty much says it all. Or doesn't say it all. Nobody knows. I guess that's the new kind of news. You read 13 short paragraphs and afterward know no more than when you began reading.

Pakistan's Nuclear Weapons are safe...or not...

Pakistan's own Intelligence services and military are aiding the Taliban...or not....

The Taliban have no control over regions of Northern Pakistan....or not....

Yeah this game is pretty fun, maybe we can all run for a political office in Pakistan.

Osama bin Laden has been worm-food for awhile. The CIA was directed to keep the old '9-11 Bogey Man' alive, by the Bush Gang, just to keep us in fear. Ever notice how there have been no recent videos of OBL, just audio? Remember that quake in the Pakistani mountains in 2005? I think that may have been what killed OBL.

BTW-Ranger Tillman was killed in April 2004.

This is what Bush meant when he told the world he wanted Bin Laden "dead or alive". Of course that was before, "mission acomplished". Apparently Bush got his wish as it is now confirmed by the Pakistani gov't that Bin Laden is in fact "dead or alive".

Osama Bin Laden is alive and well in Pakistan. Al-Qaida is supported by the Taliban and Pakistani Intelligence. I believe that Osama Bin Laden resides in north West Pakistan on the border. Pakistani leadership is weak and could be inwardly ready to side with Osama Bin Laden and extremists while outwardly saying the are pro-west.

Yep. They can't ask for more US tax-payer money without attempting to show the US that they (Pakistan) means business against the Taliban. At the same time we hear about Pakistan towns being "liberated" by Pakistan commandos, the same guys are making peace agreements in Taliban controlled regions.

These guys have nuclear weapons. Bin Laden is not dead, he is just hanging around for a nuke to be handed to him on the back of a Pakistan military truck. As soon as our money is cut off the Pakistan will admit that they are "missing" one nuclear warhead.

Has anyone else noticed that it seems to be a cultural thing in Pakistan to always be doing the "on one hand... but on the other hand... " thing?

On one hand if Bin Laden is dead there is no need to invade Pakistan. On the other hand it is better to be safe than sorry - and not reduce military aid to Pakistan.

Wasn't this man suffering from some sort of liver disease? I was under the impression he had to have dialysis. Now, if he is suffering from a killer disease, how the heck is he living in a cave? And, if he's not living in a cave, then the powers that be probably know exactly where he is! I'm really getting tired of our search for Bin Laden.

      H. Rap Brown had a really ingenious quote about "the man" having the power "to change the color of money." Were you alluding to that quote?

However, if he is in Texas, are you implying he is at the Bush Compound? :-)

I'll compromise with this neverending fiction: bin Laden's both dead AND alive; it's all relative, depending on your political persuasion and whether or not it's an election year.

A few weeks before she was assassinated last November, Benazir Bhutto had a long interview with BBC's David Frost. During the interview, Bhutto made a passing, matter-of-fact remark about "the man who murdered Osama Bin Laden" (at 2:14 in the vid)

What more did she know? Frost never asked, nor did the media. That's a pity, but Bhutto's word, and no OBL lately are good enough for me. Perhaps OBL sightings will be like those of Elvis - so far: the O'Hare taxi stand, in a Publix store in FL and a White Castle in CA.

I want to see our military coming home. Then we will know we have acomplishied our mission. We live in a small world and we can not bulid walls around our selfs to protect our country. We are the worlds police because we are the strongest nation on earth. Stop thinking we nations and start thinking about Earth. This is our planet and its time we start caring about her.
