BERLIN — Carousers at Munich's Oktoberfest must reach ever deeper into their pockets to pay for the same liter of beer with a 5 percent price hike this year.

Munich Office of Tourism said Wednesday a 2-pint (1-liter) mug of beer will cost between euro8.50 (US$11.63) and euro8.60 (US$11.78) at the 2009 festival. That is 60 euro cents (82 US cents) above 2008 prices.

Beer prices at last year's festival broke the euro8 (US$10.95) mark for the first time, topping at euro8.30 (US$11.36).

Nevertheless, some 6 million people drank 13.9 million pints (6.6 million liters) at the 2008 festival.

This year the world's largest beer festival takes place from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4.

That's about the same price for a liter of beer in downtown Chicago.
